- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for.
- 0:18Impact. Hello and good morning.
- 0:23Thank you for being here and for listening to the show.
- 0:27In this episode today, we're going to revisit an old idea
- 0:29that we've talked about before. It's the idea that we call
- 0:32tolerance to extremity. And it's basically the idea that
- 0:36you do things that are hard on purpose.
- 0:40You intentionally push yourself or stretch yourself so that you
- 0:44can build a tolerance to doing things that are uncomfortable.
- 0:47And when you build that tolerance, you become more
- 0:49resilient and adapted to conditions that challenge you.
- 0:55And the reason we're going to talk about this again is because
- 0:57there is a lot of benefit to this.
- 1:00And one of the great things about being a human, but also
- 1:04one of the tricky things about being human is that we are very
- 1:07adaptive. And because we are so adaptive,
- 1:10we can adapt in either direction.
- 1:13We can adapt to become strong and agile, to run fast, to think
- 1:17quickly, to listen attentively, to focus and track multiple
- 1:21things at once, to be empathetic, to be intuitive.
- 1:26We can adapt in all these positive directions so that
- 1:28we're functioning at a higher level, so that we have more
- 1:32self-awareness, so we take more ownership, so that we have a
- 1:36better influence and effect on the people around us.
- 1:41But we can also adapt in the other direction.
- 1:43We can become addicted to being comfortable all the time.
- 1:48We can become less aerobically fit because we're sitting for
- 1:52long periods of time during the day.
- 1:54Our muscles can get weak and used to being in poor posture
- 1:57from looking at our phones or you know, sitting in chairs with
- 2:01our chins dropped to our chest staring at the screens in front
- 2:05of us. We can get acclimated to only a
- 2:08certain range of temperature because we live in temperature
- 2:11controlled spaces. We can get used to not talking
- 2:14to people like my children did during COVID.
- 2:17We can look get used to not looking people in the eyes, not
- 2:21solving problems, not working outside in the yard, not having
- 2:26to work in teams or think creatively.
- 2:31We can adapt to 5 to 7 second videos and develop very short
- 2:35attention spans. All of those things we can adapt
- 2:38to. The list can go on and on, and
- 2:40it goes in either direction, but the most important thing to take
- 2:44away from this is that we are adaptive.
- 2:47Our bodies, our minds, our hearts, our spirits are so
- 2:51intrinsically genius and beautiful.
- 2:54That we could be so resilient and so adaptive is a miracle in
- 2:58and of itself. How incredible that our biology
- 3:03can adapt and upgrade. The more we train and exercise,
- 3:07the better we eat, the better we sleep, the better we manage our
- 3:11stress and our emotions. How incredible is that?
- 3:15And we take this for granted. We take for granted that we are
- 3:20always taking in information into our bodies, and our bodies
- 3:25are always processing and filtering data coming into our
- 3:28sensory systems. It it's such a shame because
- 3:32what's happening right now in society is that people are
- 3:35getting very maladapted and deconditioned because we're not
- 3:38pursuing the things that are uncomfortable or that challenge
- 3:42us. We're not looking to develop a
- 3:46tolerance to extremity. And when that happens, we become
- 3:50less resilient overall. As a society, as a community of
- 3:54people, as an individual, we are less resilient biologically and
- 3:59physically. We are less fit, less strong.
- 4:02We are more prone to infection and injury.
- 4:05We are less mentally tough and resilient.
- 4:08We get derailed easily by stress and emotional challenge.
- 4:13We can't handle the struggle that comes our way.
- 4:16And I'm not saying this to be a downer, I'm just saying this so
- 4:20that we can call it out for what it is.
- 4:21Because remember, this can go in either direction, the positive
- 4:25or the negative, and it doesn't have to be the way that it is.
- 4:29We actually do have the ability to choose to get uncomfortable
- 4:34on our own accord. One of my coaches always says
- 4:39that you can face challenge on demand or when shit hits the
- 4:42fan. And basically what he's saying
- 4:45is it's going to happen. Challenge either way because
- 4:49challenge is part of life. So you can either choose it on
- 4:53purpose, you can get really good at handling it, you can put in
- 4:57the reps, put in the practice and become stronger and more
- 5:00resilient by your own choice, challenge on demand, or you can
- 5:05be forced to do it because of what life hands you when shit
- 5:09hits the fan. And I have to tell you, I've
- 5:12been in both positions and it feels a lot better to choose the
- 5:17challenge on your own accord rather than being the one who is
- 5:21reacting to when shit hits the fan all the time.
- 5:25When you can be in the practice of getting comfortable with
- 5:28being uncomfortable, you get to be the one in charge, and that's
- 5:32a much different energy than being the one reacting all the
- 5:36time. Have you ever had a situation in
- 5:39your life where you've intentionally chosen to do
- 5:42something hard? Maybe you moved to a different
- 5:44country where you didn't know anybody and you had to figure
- 5:47out how to live on your own in a foreign place, how to navigate
- 5:50traveling around a city and ordering food and doing daily
- 5:53activities and making new friends and learning language.
- 5:56That's hard. Maybe you've started a business
- 5:59and you've had to figure out how to survive and make it on your
- 6:01own, with all the challenges of starting something new, figuring
- 6:05out the technology and making the contacts in your network, or
- 6:08figuring out sales and marketing.
- 6:11Maybe you've decided you want to get in great shape, and so you
- 6:14intentionally chose to start to work out five days a week, and
- 6:17you changed your nutrition and your health habits.
- 6:20All that stuff is really freaking hard, right?
- 6:22It is, of course, but when you choose it, when you purposely
- 6:26decide this is what I'm going to do, there's a different energy
- 6:30to it than if somebody were to force it upon you.
- 6:34And I know that you can feel the difference between those two
- 6:38things. Now think about a time when some
- 6:42challenge happened to you out of the blue.
- 6:45Think about a time when maybe you weren't feeling resilient
- 6:48and you weren't feeling prepared for this challenge that came at
- 6:50you. What were the thoughts that came
- 6:53to your mind? What were the things that you
- 6:55said to yourself? If you're like anybody else, it
- 7:00often sounds like this. This isn't fair.
- 7:03Why is this happening to me? How come I have to deal with
- 7:06this? What did I do to deserve this?
- 7:10That kind of challenge can feel disempowering, and it often has
- 7:14us feeling like we are the victim to life's circumstances,
- 7:19especially if we haven't been training for discomfort,
- 7:23especially if we're not comfortable with being
- 7:26uncomfortable. But consider this, this is cool.
- 7:32This is exciting to me. When you've prepared for
- 7:35discomfort, when you've practiced to build a tolerance
- 7:39to extremity, meaning you've purposely exposed yourself and
- 7:42made yourself uncomfortable and built a tolerance to that
- 7:45discomfort. When you face those times in
- 7:48life when things get thrown at you out of the blue, guess what
- 7:51happens? It doesn't hurt so bad.
- 7:55It doesn't freaking hurt so bad. You have a tolerance for
- 7:58extremity. You have a tolerance for the
- 8:01discomfort and the challenge and the stress and even suffering.
- 8:05It doesn't rattle you and feel so earth shaking to you because
- 8:09you've experienced discomfort before and because you've chosen
- 8:14it in the past, you've purposefully asked for it and
- 8:18built it into your life. You have a confidence around it.
- 8:22You have a confidence around your ability to handle
- 8:24discomfort that other people don't have when they don't do
- 8:29this, when they don't purposefully get uncomfortable.
- 8:34Do you see how important this can be?
- 8:36This is so much more than adaptability.
- 8:39This is about being able to live a life where you can feel peace
- 8:42and calm even when there's a storm raging outside.
- 8:47It's about creating and designing a life of your own
- 8:51accord that is joyful and fulfilled.
- 8:55And it's not just reacting or reactive to the circumstances
- 8:59that are coming down the pipeline.
- 9:01It's about being purposeful about the relationships that you
- 9:04build and the person that you are day in, day out.
- 9:08And it makes you unshakeable. You become this steadfast,
- 9:14grounded, consistent version of yourself and the version of
- 9:18yourself that showing up is closer to your best self, the
- 9:23best version of you. And that's what this episode is
- 9:26really about. It's about being comfortable
- 9:30with the uncomfortable, yes. It's about putting in the reps
- 9:34and the practice to build a tolerance to extremity, yes.
- 9:37But for the purpose of building a life you want and becoming the
- 9:41version of yourself that feels the best to you so that we can
- 9:45look back on our lives and think, I did that the way that I
- 9:49wanted to, and I loved my life. I love my relationships.
- 9:53I love the effort that I put in and the opportunities that I
- 9:56created and, and the way that I walked into all of those rooms
- 10:00that I walked into. So my challenge to you this week
- 10:04is to think about how can I get more comfortable with being
- 10:08uncomfortable? How could I stretch myself a
- 10:11little bit, give myself my own little stretch assignment in my
- 10:15life. Maybe it's with my health or my
- 10:18fitness or my nutrition. Maybe it's trying something new
- 10:21and getting out of my comfort zone and doing something that
- 10:24feels hard or scary. Maybe it's taking that
- 10:27international trip that you've never taken before.
- 10:30Maybe it's having the conversation or starting a new
- 10:33relationship. The scary stuff is often the
- 10:36stuff that grows us. So maybe you can look at that
- 10:40and decide what is it that I've been avoiding because I'm
- 10:43scared? I guarantee you will mine out
- 10:48something in there that feels important to you and something
- 10:51that could really move the needle towards you becoming a
- 10:54more resilient, mentally, physically strong version of
- 10:58yourself. So I hope that helps and spurs
- 11:02on some insights. Let's get comfortable with being
- 11:06uncomfortable and build that tolerance to extremity.
