- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I think so many times we're living our lives for other people that we don't actually really live our lives for ourselves.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: And knowing that why and owning that why is how you actually live your life for yourself, but build your business in a way that supports whatever that life is for you and that why for you.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the favorite self podcast.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: I like to think of it not as your future self or your best self, but your favorite self.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: My favorite self that just makes me feel the truest version of me.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: What lights your favorite self on fire?
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: I'm Carly Ottaway, founder, author, storyteller, and a woman who learned that building a successful life means nothing if it doesn't feel like yours.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: This podcast is for women who are building businesses, raising families, leading movements, and asking themselves, is this it or is there more available to me?
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: This is your invitation to come back to yourself.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Let's dig in.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Today's conversation is all about money.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: But not just making more of it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: We are talking about what it actually means to build a profitable business, how our mindset shapes the way that we earn, manage, and hold money, and how we can start thinking about money beyond revenue goals and really moving towards real wealth, freedom, and legacy.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: I'm joined by Vanessa Bowen, CPA, master NLP mindset coach and founder of Mintworthy Co., where she helps women entrepreneurs build wildly profitable businesses by combining CFO level strategy with mindset work.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: We get into the money beliefs that can really be running your business behind the scenes, the difference between revenue and true profitability, and what it looks like to build generational wealth while also modeling a healthier relationship with money for our kids.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I absolutely love this conversation.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: I think it's going to be the one that you are going to be saving to keep coming back to again and again.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: We talk real-time examples and stories and share our own stories as well.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to hear what you think.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Let's get into it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Hello, everyone.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to the Favorite Self Podcast.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I have an incredible guest for you today.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: We are gonna dive deep into talking all about money and our money mindset and the stories that we've been telling ourselves with my one of my absolute favorite experts in this space, Vanessa Bowen.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Welcome, Vanessa.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Carly.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: So excited to be here.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I'm so, so happy to have you.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: And I like we were just saying before we hit record, this feels like the perfect timing for this conversation.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: And I've loved following along with everything that you're doing to teach on this topic and especially bringing in how we mother and how we teach our kids about money as well.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: And I wanted to start off by talking about how you talk a lot about this shift from this feeling of chasing revenue to building a truly profitable, profitable business.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: And I'm curious, why do you think that so many entrepreneurs become obsessed with the top line number?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: And what are we missing when we do that?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love this question.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Don't get me started already.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, my my honest take is I do think I've got a lot of takes on why we seem to chase revenue.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: One, I do think I like to say that we're brainwashed.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I think society and social media has brainwashed women entrepreneurs into believing that six figures and seven figures is that ultimate marker of success.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I think we see it so many times, right?
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: We see it plastered.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, I had a 50K month, I had a hundred K month, I just hit seven figures.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And so we see the highlights and then we think, okay, once I hit that number, whatever that magical number is, I'm gonna have more financial security.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna not worry about money.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: My business is gonna make financial sense.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: But what we don't see behind those highlight numbers is how much did that woman actually get to keep?
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Because I don't care if you had a six-figure a month, but if you still can't pay yourself, if there's zero profit, if you're still struggling to pay your team, then we have a problem.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And so when you talk about like what are we missing, we're missing so much behind the revenue.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Because for me, it doesn't matter what you hit from a revenue perspective, it matters how much you hit from a profit perspective.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Because revenue just tells you the money that came into your business and flowed through your business.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Profit tells you how much of that money you keep.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: And it's how much profit that you have that funds your lifestyle.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: We start these businesses because we want a particular lifestyle.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: It's it funds how much you pay yourself, your lifestyle, the wealth you build for yourself, for your kids.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And so it's cute to look at the revenue, but that doesn't really tell us anything about how you're actually building the business.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And I'll say this one other thing because one of my clients said this too to me one time.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And she had just like months before hit her first hundred K month.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And she said, Vanessa, I don't want to know what my profit is.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I just I love looking at my revenue because it makes me feel successful.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I'm afraid that if I look at my profit, it's gonna tell me the truth of how I'm actually operating behind the scenes, and I don't want to see that.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So let me just keep living almost like blindly and like constantly looking at my revenue.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And let me just look at my profit when it feels safe.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: But we know that feeling of when it feels safe never happens.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So I'll keep going, but I'm gonna stop there because I think I'm so glad you started with this because I think this is like the illusion of entrepreneurship.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And we think once we chase and hit that revenue number that everything's just gonna magically feel better.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: One, because obviously we may not have structured the business correctly, but also because we don't talk about how we actually think and feel about money, our relationship with money.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And so you could hit the seven figures and still feel financially insecure because you haven't actually reconciled your relationship with money as flaw.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, so good.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: I knew you were getting juicy right off the bat.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: I always think about how in entrepreneurship I wish sometimes that, yeah, we had more transparency.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: That's why I think this conversation is so important.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I literally wish that like when we walked into these rooms, we'd like have our numbers on our forehead.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: And I don't mean that from like a labeling perspective, but just literally from this transparency of what is actually happening behind the scenes.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And I love how you talk about like the illusion of it and how we need to take back our own power of that and stop avoiding it and hiding from it too.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: But I think there's this element of if we actually all knew the truth around the profit behind people's businesses, we'd A, probably feel a lot better about our own situations and and just look at it a lot differently.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: I always imagine that for people like you that work in this space, and because I'm in marketing, you know, whenever you're in a service where you get to peel back the curtain and find out what's really going on behind the scenes.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: And I imagine that so much from a numbers perspective.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Like obviously you've worked in this industry in this space for a long time, but how has that, how has seen the behind the scenes of other people's business changed even your own perception of your business and and like really ultimately what it takes to build a wildly profitable business?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's such a great question.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And you're right, like I wish we could walk around with the numbers and not from like a judgment, but to your point, transparency perspective, because I think it's so it's so easy to look at the outside and think that someone is successful.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: But to your point, because I get to see what's actually happening behind my clients' businesses.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Like I've I've worked with clients.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: I have a client right now who just hit seven figures and her profit margin is seven percent.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I have a client who's hit 500K just last year in her business from a revenue perspective, but who's had to remortgage her house and who can't take her family on a vacation.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And you can look at what they do on the outside and think, oh my gosh, I wish I had a business like that, but you don't understand what it actually takes.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And I think that's such a great point that you raise.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: I don't think we all of us really realize what it takes to build a profitable business until we got into it and we're like, oh shoot.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: And I'll I'll even just say from like my my own journey, because when I first started my business, you know, the the whole thought for me was like, this is what people were telling me.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: You start a business, and then once you hit your corporate salary, like you're good.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Like once you can make your business hit your corporate salary, you're good.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: You made it.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: And so I remember when I first started, I was chasing that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I gotta hit the six figures that I had in corporate.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And I didn't hit it that one year.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And the next year I was like, I'm gonna do it no matter what.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: And I worked myself to the bone.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: I like depleted some of my savings to have to do it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: I had to put in a little bit of debt to do it.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: And then I hit it and I was like, wait a minute.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I still had, I think I I can't recall my numbers directly, but I think my profit a year was like 20 or 30,000.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: That I was like, wait a minute, y'all told me that when I hit my or you know, replace my corporate salary, that then I would have made it.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And here I am with 20, 30k profit.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: That doesn't even pay my bills.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And so even for me, I didn't realize how much it takes to truly build a profitable business because we don't think about the cost it it actually is required and incurred to build the business.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And like you said, like investing in marketing, investing in team.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: There's so much, there's so many expenses that we have to incur.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And so when we're only focusing on that top line, again, we're in this illusion, delusion of what it actually takes to build the business.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: So I have been in that delusion.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And then until I I think until you really reconcile that it is just like in this illusion of success, I think that's when you really start to question what you invest in.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: You question how you spend your money in the business, you question, am I gonna get an ROI?
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: You question what's the profit that this investment's going to actually give into my business.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: And I can totally relate.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, being in business now for 11 years, I've had so many different seasons that I've experienced.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: And so I know that there are seasons where from the outside the numbers look like they're growing, but but my take home was was shrinking, you know, as the team was expanding.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: There are seasons when I was like, wow, I'm my team is making more money than I am.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's really wild to, it's it's quite the roller coaster ride.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: And I'd love to hear just from your experience and perspective, like what does having a wildly profitable business actually mean?
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: And you know, how do we navigate that?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Because I think sometimes we, when we think more profitable, well, we think we it means we need to make more money.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: But what does that actually look like in practice?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Such a great question.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: And I love that you landed on that that last point there, because it does not always necessarily mean make more money.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So, for instance, I'll just give this example.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: So I'm working with a client right now inside of our VIP day, and she wants to build a more profitable business, but she really doesn't want to work a lot more.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: You know, and that's like the goal of all of us, right?
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And she had this year where she expanded her business really quickly and she realized, no, no, no, that's not what I want to do.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: I actually want a smaller team, I want a smaller business, but I still want it to be profitable, and you can have both.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: So when I say wildly profitable, yes, that could mean more revenue.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying you don't need to have the goal of more revenue.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: I always want more revenue, but it's looking, this is where you get more granular, and you look at your offers and you look at how are your offers structured to bring profit into your business.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So in this client, all we did was restructure her core offer because what was happening was literally every time a client came, she was putting together a custom proposal.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: And so some clients she might be making money, other clients she's like making no profit.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And so all we did was restructure her offers, shifted her pricing so that every time there's a baseline price, we know she's gonna at least make 30 to 40% profit on every client that comes into the door.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Then she gets to decide how many clients she wants to work with, but she is actually making more profit than what she was doing before.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And so it comes down to one, looking at how your offers are structured.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And and as women sometimes, when we price our offers, we don't take into account all the time that we spend behind our offers.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: So one, look at your pricing.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Look how much time you're spending.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And I always give this like an example, you know, if I'm working with a one-on-one client, my time is not just time in front of that client for that one hour session.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: If it's a, let's say, a three-month program or coaching program, I have to get all their information that they send to me.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I spend literally six to eight hours combing through a client's data and details before I even start.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Well, I should be compensated for that time.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Then I meet with the client.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Then I might have to give them some extra homework for them to do, then they have to send that back to me, then I have to review it.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: So all of that time should be captured in my price.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: And my price should capture enough profit to cover my time, cover if I have to pay subcontractors, et cetera, et cetera.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: So when we talk about wildly profitable businesses and how do we do that, first you got to look at your offer structure.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: And then you have to look at your pricing.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And that's the easiest way that you can bring more profit into your business without having to work more and do more.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: That's number one.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: The other thing is you got to look at your expenses.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And yes, it could be like the subscriptions that were like, oh, just keep this subscription just in case I need it in the future when you know you haven't been using it for like the whole year.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, so get rid of those things.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: But also, this is a big one: your marketing and the ROI on your marketing spend.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: I don't think we take enough time to look at whether our marketing is getting the right ROI.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And I'll quickly share this story of one of my clients right now.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: She's one of my fractional CFO clients, and we've been literally working on this for pretty much the majority of this year.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: But long story short, she hires this marketing team and she runs this like massage therapy practice, but not like relaxation massage, more like chronic pain massage.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: So she hires this marketing team and they basically run these campaigns to get people into the door.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: So you get a first session for a discounted price.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Every month they're bringing in 20 to 30 new clients.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: So from the outside, you're like, oh my gosh, this marketing campaign is great.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: We should throw more money in it.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: But when I came in and analyzed the campaign, what we've realized was that every new client that comes in in that first visit is actually coming in at a loss because she still has to pay her team to actually give the massage and the client's paying a discounted rate.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: So every time a client walks into the door, she's losing, depends on where we're in the where we're at in the campaign.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: But on average, she's been losing between$50 to$70 every time a person comes into the door.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: And so instead of us being like, okay, let's just, you know, can the campaign because you can't, she's locked in for a year contract.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: We had to actually come up with a whole new strategy, a whole new way to get clients to come back into the door.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: So we created this whole three-month journey card, three-session journey card, so that when a person comes in, they get a discounted session, but then we literally sell them into a three-session package so we can recoup that profit.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: But my point is this we're spending money on this marketing, whether it's paid ads, this and that, and we're seeing the clients get in the door.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: We're seeing the revenue go up, but we don't look at, well, what's the cost of that revenue and isn't actually profitable?
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Because in this particular client, year to date, her revenue is up 33,000, her profits down 8,000.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: So again, we keep focusing on revenue.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: We keep saying, oh, it's marketing campaigns getting in new clients, but what's the cost?
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: When it comes to building a wildly profitable business, you can't just look at revenue.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: You can't just look at clients coming into the door.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: You have to have to actually analyze what is the cost to operate this offer?
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: What is the cost of one client into my business?
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: How much profit is this one client bringing into my business?
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And that's how you change the ship the actual profit of your business.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that so much.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And I always encourage our clients to look at it from that perspective of like, okay, what is that return you're getting on a lifetime client, especially, right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: It's not just that first appointment.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: We have to remember that, you know, you're getting them in the door and then they're there for life and then bringing their whole family and you're growing with them.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And that's why we love working with wellness clinics and other service providers, like in the financial um industries as well.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: And, you know, then looking at, okay, then here's the monthly investment and how many clients do I need to get a month in order to cover this investment and know that then I also get the lifetime value of that client in addition.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: And in remembering your marketing costs for retaining clients too, right?
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Especially for those types of businesses where you're also staying top of mind and bringing clients back that maybe otherwise wouldn't have heard from you for a while and hadn't been booking their appointments.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, so many pieces.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: And which is why in marketing, like it's not the flashy numbers that matter the most.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Of course, it's it's nice to go viral, sure, but especially when you're, you know, a local business like that, it's really actually people in the door remembering the cost that you're investing and getting them into the door and what does that return look like?
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: So I love that breakdown.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: I always love how you share the real-time stories and client stories.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: I think it's so helpful and so important.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: What if your next level isn't about becoming someone else, but seeing yourself more clearly?

- 18:55SPEAKER_01: I'd love to pivot a little bit and dive into the mindset piece on this because I know you have this really interesting intersection between your experience as a CPA and a mindset coach.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: So where do you see mindset coming up most clearly in someone's numbers?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, such a great question.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: It comes out all, it comes in all throughout, but I would say I'd say two main areas.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: One, when it comes to actually running the numbers, or I'd say running the business finances, I find most of my clients who come to me have been avoiding the numbers or don't want to look at the numbers.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Or I say sometimes we like to be bank balance CEOs where they just look at their bank balance and decide whether they can invest in something or pay the bills.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: So I say mindset definitely comes up in terms of women just owning the numbers of their business, whatever the numbers are, and not shying away and not avoiding, because you can't change the trajectory of the business if you don't know what the numbers are telling you.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: That's another one side.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: The other side I see it a lot in is pricing.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Because a lot of our pricing decisions are baked into our worth, how we see ourselves, how much value we think we are giving, whether we think we need more experience or another credential.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: And so I see a lot of the times when I'm working with my clients, their price is not reflective of the value that they're bringing.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Their price is reflective of the value they see in themselves.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: And all of this mindset stuff comes back to our own relationship with money.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: And I think, I think this is the missing piece.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: You know, we start our businesses to make money.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Like, let's be real, we started to make money, and we focus on the strategy and the marketing tactics and the offer and revenue model structure, but no one first sits back and says, okay, I'm starting this business to make money.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: But what is my relationship with money?
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Because if it's, you know, whether however you were born, raised, childhood money blocks, if you don't have this connected relationship with money, that's also why it is so hard to make the money in your business.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: That's why it's so hard for you to charge what you should be charging to get the value and the profit that you should be.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: That's why it's so hard for you to look at the numbers and actually see what they're telling you.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: It all comes down to our relationship with money.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: And I always like joke, I'm like, hey, when you start a business, you should also know that you have to do this inner deep work on your relationship and mindset with money.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: It's um it's almost like impossible to fully build a wildly profitable business or hit that revenue goal unless you do that inner work on your relationship with money.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And like it's it's so deep, right?
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: It's like, what's our childhood stories?
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: What were we learned and what did we inherit?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: What money mistakes we made.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: In on ourselves as women, whether we had a partner or whether we not, like it's so, it's so nuanced.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And this is why we have to do that work because however you think and feel about money, it's translating into every business decision you make.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: I just focused on avoiding the numbers and the pricing.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: But if it literally translates into do you overcommit?
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Do you prov like over deliver to your clients?
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Do you not feel worthy of even working with certain clients?
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Like some of my clients should be working with higher level clients because that's really who they should be working with, but they don't feel no, no, no.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I I can't, I can't.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: That that type of client will never work with me.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: That's all mindset.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: So it translates into every decision you make in your business.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: And I don't think we talk about that enough.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's so important and something that is a constant practice and it is constantly humbling you, right?
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Because it's not a matter of like, oh, I worked through that money block check.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: And then the next up level comes and tests you in a whole other way.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: And I feel like that too.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: I feel like recently I I've been working a lot on my feeling over-responsible for client success and then the over-delivering piece.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: And I feel like I've worked on that for so long, but I've hit a different level of it.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: And so I just wanted to ask you too, how you see those blocks coming up.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Like for me, I see them coming up in these kinds of tests that are testing me.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Like, okay, are you gonna once again work with this client that, you know, feels a little bit unaligned, but the the dollars make sense.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And, you know, you maybe even the people pleasing comes in of like it was a referral and you don't want to say no.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you identify those blocks with your clients?
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: And maybe even are there any examples you can share even with yourself and what you've been working through?
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so funny.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: You said the one that I was gonna bring up where I I've fallen into this trap many times in my journey of building my business was saying yes because of the money.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: When you know, one, either the client doesn't align or two, I always try to evaluate things between opportunity or distraction.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Because when every when something comes in, it it is always an opportunity.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Like it's something that has never been presented to you.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: It's an opportunity for something, but it's having that discernment between is it an opportunity or is it a distraction?
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: And for me, distractions could be maybe it's not an aligned client, but also like what am I actually focused on in building in the business right now?
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: And will this thing take me away from it?
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: And in the past, I would always just like say yes.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: I was like, everything's an opportunity, it's more money.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Say yes to the money, but not until I did the own work on my own money blocks and realized, oh no, like that is so you operating out of this block of scarcity, believing that if you don't say yes to this client, another client won't come, or another more aligned client won't come.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Or if you say yes to this opportunity that's gonna take you down this other path, that it's gonna be more beneficial than the path that you already set for yourself.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: And so I've always caught myself in this trap, but I try now to really just make that distinction.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Is it an opportunity?
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Is it a distraction?
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, the money might be good, but is it actually worth the money?
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Because especially in those cases where you have a client that you know is going to not be aligned, that's going to be bugging you all the time, is it really worth that money?
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Probably not.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: So I yes, right?
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: I think we've all been there.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: So we had this corporate client this summer that came through.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: And I always feel like in this these moments, now I can reflect back in hindsight's 2020, right?
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Because as hard as the no felt in the moment, it also didn't feel that way because I knew that looking at it, it looked good on paper, but the profit wasn't going to be there.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: It aligned with our values and felt like it could feel right.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: But I also knew that if I said yes to that, it would have pulled me so much out of my role that I've been boundaried in in like being the CEO, being the visionary, and everything that I'm building right now, including a brand new offer that I'm launching this fall.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: And now that I can look back, I I can totally see how right now I would be so in it with that project.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: And it makes me realize like saying yes actually would have um not only, you know, potentially been a setback for our team and our our profit, but it would have been a form of self-sabotage in terms of what I'm building and where my energy needs to be.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: So I totally see it as that test.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: It was that shiny carrot of like, okay, this'll feel great in your bank account, but is it actually getting you where you want to go next and like really having that future forward vision?
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: I think that is such that part, that future forward vision.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: I think so many times, and I'd say this like my own journey, and I see it a lot in my clients, is like we set the vision, like you know, we'll set it whether it's January 1st or September 1st, whenever, but we set the vision, and then to your point, the shiny care comes and it's almost like we forget what the vision is, or we're just like, which way should we go?
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And that's like one of the things I always say is like, you want to create also like a money manifesto for yourself so that you're always connecting to that vision every day.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: So when these things come in, it's like, oh no, mm-mm, yes or no, and then move on.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: And can you share any other examples of like some specific money beliefs or patterns that you have seen that are really keeping these successful, ambitious businesswomen from holding on to more money of more of the money that they earn ultimately?
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: One thing I it's funny, I feel like in this last maybe year and a half, one of the things that I, and I'm diving deeper into this more of my clients.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: One of the things I I'm witnessing and seeing is that women actually have a hard time holding money.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: And what I mean by that is, you know, we say we want to make money and we make the money, but somehow, talk about self-sabotage, we find a way to deplete that money.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And so I'm I'm seeing this more and more.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: I think we actually really have this block around not feeling safe to actually hold money.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And it's a lot under that.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: But if we really think about it, if we say to ourselves, okay, if whatever that let's just go for the revenue goal, okay?
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Whatever that big revenue goal is, like take yourself there right now.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: If you're listening to us right now, take yourself there, okay?
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: And kind of pressure check yourself because whatever number you came up with, is that the number that you actually want, or is that the number you think you can get?
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Because that's a difference, right?
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: First and foremost.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: So if that's the number you think you can get, take yourself to the number you actually want.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Like, what is that like?
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, this is the amount of revenue I'd love my business to make.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Take yourself there.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Like, actually take yourself there.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: But then start to ask yourself, if I get there, what am I actually afraid of?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: What do I think might be required to hit that number?
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: What do I think I will lose?
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: What would be required of me?
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: What would be the more responsibilities that I would have to have?
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Is it more responsibilities to maintain it?
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Is do you think you're going to potentially, and this is a big one for my clients.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: A lot of my clients think that if they hit more, a higher revenue number or they make more money, that they're gonna lose people that they love.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: That's a huge one.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Either family or they think they're going to outgrow their friends and they're gonna lose their friendships.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: And so it's this fear that we're going to be alone if we actually hit that revenue or whatever that number is.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: That's one thing.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: The responsibility of having to maintain it.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Well, if I hit it, oh my gosh, like I have to maintain it because what will people think if I don't?
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: So it's that.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: It's what is it gonna require of you?
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: I actually had this conversation with one of my best friends this weekend, and she literally was like, I want to hit the revenue number, but I realize like what it's going to require of me.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: And I actually I don't think I want to do all that.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: I don't want to do all that work.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: I just want to chill for a bit.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: So again, we're saying these things, we're saying we want more money, but I think a lot of the times as women, we actually don't feel safe holding that amount of money.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where we have to really be real with ourselves and reconcile the truth.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Because this is why we get into this like I'd say constant lens of chasing, because we think, oh well, if I get it, I get it.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: But really, you you don't subconsciously, you don't actually want it.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: And until you can subconsciously reconcile with that or work on your block so that you do feel comfortable holding it, like that's the only way to get there.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: And so I'm saying all that to say we self-sabotage.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: So it might still mean your business is moving, it might still mean your your revenue is increasing, but I'll tell you one story real quick from one of my clients.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Her revenue was increasing.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: And I gave her this this activity.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I said, okay, your next 30k of profit, you have a 30k of profit next month.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: What do you what are you gonna do with it?
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And all I wanted her to do was tell me what she would do with it because I could see where her blocks were.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Literally, Carly, it was the hardest exercise of her life.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I didn't say you had to do anything, I didn't say you, you, I didn't all I said was tell me what you would do with it.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: And she came back, literally, I gave her a whole week.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: She came back, she's like, I could figure out the first 20, 20k.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I'd put some to reinvest in the business, I'd support my nephew because she takes care of her nephew.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: She's like, I'm struggling with the last 10.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: And she sends me this voice note.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: She's like, honestly, I feel like I'm failing this exercise.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: I can't figure out what to do with the the last 10.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: And she's voice noting me, and she's like, Oh my gosh.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Literally, literally unearthing her block as she voice notes.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: She's like, Oh, I didn't realize I could just hold the money.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: She's like, Oh, wait, is that an option?
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Like asking me, is that an option, Vanessa?
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Could I just hold the money?
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: She's like, Oh, I never thought I could hold it because in my mind, I feel like the money comes in, I have to use it because it it feels uncomfortable if I hold it, if I save it, if I invest it.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: And so that's just her story.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: But I'd say the last year and a half, especially when we ran Profit Week, I did a whole day on this and it really illuminated a lot for a lot of women.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: I think one of our biggest blocks, which translates into pricing, which translates into avoiding, is that we actually don't feel safe holding more money and whatever more is for you.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's such a big one.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: And I can also relate to that fear and that block around how will it affect other relationships.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: And I think there's the one side of like doing the inner work on yourself to be able to hold it and call it in.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: And there's like a little bit of an audit of your life and your business and not only, you know, how you're going about your day and the habits and and where you're focusing your time, are you spending your time like that, you know, seven-figure entrepreneur, if that's the number for you, would spend it?
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: And are the relationships in your life supportive of that lifestyle?
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Like you have to get really clear on, you know, is this because there's a certain friendship or family dynamic that actually is is kind of pushing you to play small because you can't be yourself and and live your big ambitious dreams out loud and feel safe to do that in this relationship.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: And if that's the case, you know, obviously relationship dynamics can be very tricky, but it's something to audit there and maybe that's actually holding you back as well.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: But I really love that piece on creating that safety with holding it.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: And I think, you know, there's different ways that you can navigate that and test it and see it happening as the money's coming in, what's happening.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: And this is why I always say the why is what matters most.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Why do you want that?
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Like, do you actually want that seven-figure business?
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: And why?
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Why do you want that?
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: What is that actually gonna mean for you?
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: And maybe what it means, it can actually be accomplished with the 500k business that's more profitable.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, so true.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: It's understanding your why and knowing your why and and owning your why.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: And I think that's and owning your why to whatever relationship you think might object to that why.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And I remember as you were talking, this other story came up.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: I'll just share real quick from one of my other clients.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: This is a couple of years ago.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: She actually bought her dream house and did not tell her parents because she was afraid of what her parents would think, that they would think that she's, you know, gone far away, that she's chasing the money.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: So again, it's to your point, what's your why and owning it?
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: Because I think so many times we're living our lives for other people, that we don't actually really live our lives for ourselves.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: And knowing that why and owning that why is how you actually live your life for yourself, but build your business in a way that supports whatever that life is for you and that why for you.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Which is why to go back to the comment I was talking about about like walking into the room with our numbers on our forehead.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: I feel like at the same time, like I think of like a Black Mirror episode where we have our numbers, but then we also have some sort of barometer for like our sense of joy and fulfillment.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: And, you know, do they actually align?
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Because as we know, success is so much more about the numbers, and the numbers can support the other pieces, but the why behind it is where you really get that clarity.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: So, can we talk about leaning?
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about personal wealth.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Now, I really want to get into this conversation because I think, you know, as entrepreneurs, sometimes we can get into this cycle of really pouring everything back into the business.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: And then we got we're assuming that the business itself is our wealth or and how do we, how should we be thinking about the difference between a profitable company and actually becoming a wealthy person?
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love this question.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: So I always say you want to think about building wealth beyond your business.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Your business is just a vehicle, just like you would invest into stocks or ETFs, whatever, think of your business as a vehicle.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: So, practically speaking, one of the things I always recommend, and any of my clients, this is what we're setting up for them.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Two different distributions from your profit.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: There's other ones, but I want to talk about these two in the context of building personal wealth.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: First distribution of your profit is your profit fund, or sometimes I really like to call it your FU fund, okay?
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: Whatever feels more comfortable.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: But you are the CEO.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: And yes, we need to reinvest into our business to grow the business, but also you are the CEO.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: So, how about reinvesting into you?
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: So a portion of your profit every month, I usually say one to 10%.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: You decide it could just be 1%, it could be 10%.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: You could start at one and build up over time, doesn't matter.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Set a percentage, but every month, a percentage of that profit goes into your profit fund or your wealth fund.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, your FU fund.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: That is for you to do as you please, okay?
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: When we worked at a corporate job, we got a bonus.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: So where's your bonus?
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: This is on top of what you're paying yourself every month, and you could decide how you want to distribute that.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: I just like to say leave it in your FU fund for at least three to six months before you pull the money out, but use it for you.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: And that when I say use it for you, it could be to invest in personal wealth or it could just be investing in you because that is also pouring into your wealth.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: So that's one distribution.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: The other distribution is your actual wealth fund.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: So again, one to 10% of your profit every month should go into your wealth fund.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: That is intentionally to build wealth outside of your business.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: Now, you might be paying yourself a certain amount every month and you still might be contributing to your TFSA and RSP through your salary or your dividend that you pay yourself.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: I'm talking outside of that.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: So one to 10% of your profit every month goes into your wealth fund, and then you decide how to invest that.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: And that is dependent on whatever your wealth and growth strategy is.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: It could be TFSA, RSP, it could be, I always recommend a portion of that wealth fund be invested in some sort of life insurance strategy as well, because that's one of the biggest ways that we can build wealth for ourselves, wealth for our next generation, and also tax deferred and potentially, depending on your strategy, tax exempt wealth as well.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: So this wealth fund is so that every month a portion, I don't care if it's$10, but a portion of your profit every month goes to building wealth beyond your business.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: And you'll put that money into your wealth fund and then decide where you want to distribute it depending on what your investment strategy is.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: So that's one thing I one of the things I recommend.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: And I always say it does not matter where your business is at.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I don't care if this month your profit was only a hundred bucks, and so 10% of that is 10 bucks.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: It's about establishing the habit.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Because when you can create that habit with the small, you can create it with the large.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: And everything when it comes to investing and building your personal wealth, it's all about the compounding effect of time.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: So$10 today,$10 tomorrow, it's all going to add up over time, but create the habit for yourself.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's so key and something I remind myself of a lot because I feel like, I mean, Luke and I are in the business together, right?
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: So it's it's all in, and we've been in it for 10 years together and navigated many different seasons in business and personal life.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Like we grew our family since then and our kids have grown.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: And I'm just reminded of like the different seasons that you're navigating.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: And sometimes there's definitely more available to invest in the wealth fund, and sometimes there's less.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: And sometimes it's remembering well, remembering well, the investment in, you know, daycare before we before it was subsidized for us.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Like that was an investment for us.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: And and, you know, having that perspective as well.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: I keep telling myself that I feel like my 40s, I'm late 30s now, and my 40s are like truly my wealth-building years.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: But that's because I feel like I've developed a good foundation and have those habits to carry me through where not that the expenses drop, we're getting into rep sports, it's a whole other world, but they shift and you know, everything's shifting and growing.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: So I I think that those habits, you know, is are so, so important in having that foundation.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 40:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: Um, can we talk about bringing this into motherhood and how our kids, as we know, are watching how we talk about money, how we spend it, how we save it, how we stress about it.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: And what do you think that we are teaching them maybe unintentionally?
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: And what would you love to see us model more instead?
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: Such a great question.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I like to say, this is just my own personal opinion.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: I think our generation is the generation that stands the domino back up.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: And what I mean by that is, you know, when we were all born, all of us, like this is one of the things we all have in common.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter what your business looks like today, it doesn't matter what walk of life you have today.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: When we were all born, when it comes to money, our thoughts, perceptions, interactions with money, we were all a clean slate.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: All of us.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: All of us.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: We came out of the womb, we didn't know what the heck money was, we didn't know it was something to stress about, we did not know what money was.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: But as we grew older, especially between the ages of zero to seven, so if you have a child between those ages, this is imperative because their mind is still in its subconscious state.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: So everything that they see or an experience, they're taking it at face value.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: And so our deepest relationship with money, our deepest blocks around money were established during that time.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: And so our parents grew up in a different generation.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Their parents grew up in a different generation.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: And so what we're really living with, like our deepest blocks, is what we saw our parents do.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: Well, we have a heightened set of awareness.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: And so the domino just kept falling.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: Our parents' generation, the generation before that, and they just taught what they knew.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: And especially when you think about the women of our lineage, like women are just really creating their own financial agency, only in these last like couple of like I'd say decade or so, you know.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: So even when you think of like the women, especially if you have daughters, the things we're teaching our daughters is so imperative because the domino literally just kept falling, kept falling, kept falling, and now it's on us.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: And this is where I think we have this heightened awareness because we're having a conversation like this today, which we probably wouldn't have had, you know, years ago.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: This is where I feel like now it's on us to stand the domino back up.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: So, what do we want our kids to know about money?
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: What do we want to model?
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: We can stop that that narrative, that generational narrative about wealth, about poverty, about scarcity, if we're the ones that stand it back up.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: And so when you talk about like, what do we do?
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: How do we model it?
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: I think this is where it's so important for us to make money just normal in our conversations with our kids.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Not this thing that's like, oh, we can't talk about it around the kids.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: Well, how else are they gonna learn?
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: If you don't talk about it around them, they're gonna grow up, especially if they're in the ages of zero to seven, thinking that money is scary, like has to be secret.
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: That is secretive.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: So, this is where when it comes to modeling, have talk about money around your kids.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, we're going to the grocery store today, it can be very Very everyday conversations.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: It doesn't you don't have to tell them here's the mortgage, here's the debt, here's the savings.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Bring it down to their level.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: We're going to the grocery store today.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: Here's how much we have to spend.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: We're going to go in with this amount, and here's what we can spend.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: So when you're asking for this thing in the cookie aisle or this cereal, does it make sense for the whole family budget, the whole family lifestyle?
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: Or we're going to take a family trip to Disney.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: We're saving up for it.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Here's how much we saved every month.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: Bring your kids involved.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Have them do a little like thermometer thing and like color it in.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: But then when it comes to the conversation, when they're at the toy store, I want X.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: Well, you're like, hey, we're saving for Disney.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Do you want this toy or do you want Disney?
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: So that's what I mean about bringing them into the conversation.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: It's not about exposing them to everything, but it's making money conversations normal.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: So that's what you should do no matter what.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: As they get older, I love to like actually have them tangibly use money.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Like let them use money, let them make decisions.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: If they decide to buy that thing and they don't have money left for the other thing, guess what?
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: They get to learn.
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: And I think the faster that we allow our kids to learn before that first paycheck, that's how they also are able to change their trajectory, how we stand that domino back up.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: Because I didn't really learn this stuff when I was younger, right?
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: So if we can give them that practical application.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: The other thing I'll just to wrap this up is how we speak about money.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: I think this is one of the most important things.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: I will never say around my daughter, that's too expensive.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: We can't afford that.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: I will never use those words because especially between those ages of zero to seven, she's formulating what that means.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: It means I can, I don't have enough.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: I may not ever have enough, especially if she will, if she constantly hears me say we can't afford, her mind's gonna say, oh, we're poor or we uh never have money or we're never gonna have money.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: And then she's gonna internalize that for herself.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: I'm never gonna have money, I'm always gonna struggle.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: So the words you use around your child, maybe you can't actually afford the thing, but let's change the language.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: That's not something we're gonna invest in right now, sweetie.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: That's not something we're gonna buy right now.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: We got other priorities inside of the family.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: We want to do some bigger things for us as a family, like X, Y, Z, whatever those are, bring them into that.
- 46:21SPEAKER_00: But your language around your kids is so important.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm also really big on affirmations for kids, especially again, zero to seven.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: This is when you get to formulate their your mind.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: So for us, every night, every night, we started this when Aria was probably a month old, literally.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: Every night before we go to bed, we say prayers and we say her affirmations.
- 46:43SPEAKER_00: And we started off with my name is and we say her name, Aria Madison Bowen, and then we list affirmations.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: I am brave, I am strong.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: Money constantly flows to me with ease.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: It is safe for me to have money, it is safe for me to hold lots of money.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: I am wealthy, I am worthy, I am enough.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: We can't like every night we're saying those to her.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: And now she says it.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Like literally, she may not understand the words, but when she's old enough to understand them, when she makes that first paycheck, money flows to me with ease.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: She's never gonna worry about whether money's coming or she's never gonna feel scarcely because she's like, no, money flows to me with ease.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Like it's just gonna be normal and natural to her.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: And that's what I mean by standing the domino back up.
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: Think about the narratives that you have.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: Think about how is your mother with money?
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: How is your father with money?
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: What money traits from your parents have you inherited?
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: That's gonna help you to understand your narrative.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: And then check yourself, are you passing that narrative to your child?
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: And how can you stand the domino back up so you're not passing that down?
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: And if your children are older, ask them, well, what do you think money is?
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: Do you think we're wealthy?
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: Do you think we have a lot of money?
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: What is money to you?
- 47:55SPEAKER_00: Get them to tell you so you can start to see what their narrative is, so you can start to change that trajectory before they get too much older.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, so good.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: And what a beautiful gift that you're giving your daughter at such a young age and you know, expanding us all in that.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: And, you know, what a beautiful opportunity for us to remember that, you know, it's such a privilege to do this work on ourselves because when we rewrite these stories for ourselves, that's what we get to demonstrate for our kids.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: And, you know, we can catch ourselves.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: It's not like we're perfect.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: We can catch ourselves.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: Maybe you, maybe you slipped and said, Oh, I can't afford that.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: But then you caught yourself and had the awareness to realize that was a projection.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: And how can you, how can you rewrite it in the moment?
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: And I'm always a big believer in repairing, you know, in whatever capacity that looks like.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: One thing I've been really focusing on as my kids are a little bit older too, because like my daughter's in that age now where she asks so many questions.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: And it's really beautiful.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: But holy, I was joking with my husband this summer because I'm like, I don't know why I feel like so exhausted.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like I'm like handling this, like having the kids home I'm working pretty well.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: And then as I'm having this conversation, she's right there asking questions, part of the conversation.
- 49:09SPEAKER_01: And I just look at them, I'm like, oh, now I now I know.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: Like, because everything is a side conversation.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: And so I'm always on my toes of like, okay, then how am I teaching her about this and not just shutting her out of like this is an adult conversation.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: Like, we don't do that.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: She's asking the questions, she's ready to learn about them.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: She's so inquisitive, and I really want to nurture that.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: But holy smokes, it can be taxing on your energy sometimes.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: But I've been really focusing too on like the family culture that we're building.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: And I actually saw this, I think it was on Instagram somewhere, of kind of like coming up with a nickname for your family.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: And then, because you know, we're also in that age where there's more comparison of like, oh, but this, my friend does this and blah, blah, blah, they get this.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: And just really coming from this perspective of like, well, in our family, we value this.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: And so we're prioritizing this, and this is how we do it in our family.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: And and that's helped me so much navigate these conversations that can, you know, quickly send you on a bit of a spiral when you can't get caught off guard of like, I wasn't prepared for this.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: How do I how do I answer this?
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, so so good.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: I and I think that's so crucial.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: Like you said, like bring it into our family and what our family does.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: I I love that.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: I think that's so genius.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like even in the back to school, right?
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: It's like you bring them a part of it, you they see, we talk about what we're budgeting for, and they maybe they want these shoes that are twice as much as these shoes that are really good still.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: And we can save that money and spend it on this experience that we're saving up for, just like you said.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I I'm just so big on the transparency in the conversations.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: I think our kids uh because again, we didn't, I didn't have that as a kid either.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: And it's like no shade against my parents, but like we didn't talk about money at the table.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: And it exactly what you said, it felt like this private thing.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: And so I it created for sure a lot of like, well, if I didn't get those answers or that transparency from my parents, and I just started connecting the dots in my own way, right?
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: So we actually have this beautiful opportunity to be the leaders in this and not only lead the conversations, but show them and how we, you know, what we prioritize every day and our actions that follow through with that.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: And it's it is such a privilege, even though it comes with a lot of weight sometimes too.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: No, you're so right.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: And I think that that in itself is a mindset shift, like seeing it as a privilege, like that in itself is such a powerful mindset shift.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: And I couldn't agree with you more.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: I like I used to joke with Marcus, I was like, when we have kids, I'm gonna be so excited because it's gonna be like my experiment of life.
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: Like, can I change them?
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Can I have them have a different mindset than me?
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: And you're right, it's it's a privilege, it is a challenge, like just like building a business, but it is this beautiful privilege and gift that we get to leave.
- 52:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that comes down to like legacy too, right?
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: You know, it's not just always about the financial legacy, but what are you giving your kids?
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: Like, what are you instilling in them?
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: What are they learning from you?
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Like, what's that legacy that you're translating to them as well?
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I really you mentioned this, and I'd love to lean into this a little bit more about, you know, when we're talking about generational wealth and what does that really mean beyond simply like leaving our kids an inheritance or money one day?
- 52:32SPEAKER_01: And also from the female perspective and like the mothers of the daughters specifically, you know, what is the importance of making these changes first with ourselves and with our daughters, in and you know, really ultimately what's changing when we give women more economic power and choice?
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, I think the whole world changes.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: I always say this, I say, when more good women have more money, the whole world literally changes.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: And I think that's it.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: I think we as women are so dang powerful and we are just getting started.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Like we are just getting started.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: And I think if we as mothers can empower our daughters to know that they are worthy and they deserve a seat at whatever table, or they can create the table themselves, I think the more that we pour into our daughters that way, the more that literally this whole world's gonna change.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Like imagine when more women are running the world, like so much more compassion, so much more heart and humanity.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: And also I think it just allows women to really step into who they're meant to be.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: I think when we go generations back, like we were always suppressed, we were always looked down on, we always had to ask our partner, like back in the days, like we didn't even, women didn't have even have their own bank account back in the days.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: Like, how wild is that?
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: Like, and that's like not like you know, millions of years ago.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: And so I agree.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: I think the more that we get to model, especially as entrepreneurs, I think this is one of the beautiful, most beautiful gifts we can give to our daughters is to show them that you can go outside the box, that you can create something meaningful meaningful for yourself.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: I think that's when they they almost just like have the um permission.
- 54:28SPEAKER_00: Like they they almost have this automatic permission to be like, oh, I could do the same.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: And I think honestly, that's how we change, literally, we change, change this world.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: When you're wondering the word, I was thinking audacity came to me.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: But like I think it's the audacity to believe that change is possible.
- 54:45SPEAKER_01: And as we're wrapping this up, I'd love actually to kind of, you know, speaking of that economic power, and I think, you know, there's a lot of scarcity right now around the political landscape, the economic landscape.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: And I'm just so curious from your perspective, people who maybe find themselves in a situation where, you know, either they've watched too much of the news today or they've had that conversation with a family member and they're like finding themselves spiraling in that scarcity mindset.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: What advice would you have for them?
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: What's what's maybe like the mindset reframe reframe?
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: And what's that next powerful action step that they could be taking?
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, this is so good.
- 55:21SPEAKER_00: First, I say don't watch the news.
- 55:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that's just my personal opinion.
- 55:25SPEAKER_00: I don't watch the news.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: I'm like, if anything like crazies happen, I will find out.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: Someone will tell me, it'll be all over Instagram.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: I'll find out.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: So if you can shelter yourself from constantly, like I can't, I I just I can't watch.
- 55:40SPEAKER_00: I just can't, because to your point, it sends you down a spiral.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: Then what you're actually doing, if you think about it, you're you're you're absorbing that information and it's going right into your subconscious.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: Even though, yes, you're older than seven, your subconscious is still there, okay?
- 55:57SPEAKER_00: And so whatever goes into your mind goes directly into your subconscious, unless you shift it.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: And so if you're constantly absorbing these things, you're literally programming your subconscious to live in that scarcity.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: That's number one.
- 56:09SPEAKER_00: So if you can cut it out, cut it out, please.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: Second thing, I read this book.
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: One of I would always recommend this book to everyone.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: One of the most life-changing books I've ever read about uh money mindset.
- 56:19SPEAKER_00: It's called Feel Free to Prosper by Marilyn Janae.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: And she says in there in the book, because she talks about when she went through like the um was it like the whole like recession in what 2008, whenever that was.
- 56:33SPEAKER_00: Anyway, what she said is always stuck with me.
- 56:36SPEAKER_00: She's like, that's their economy, that's not my economy.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: And I always hold that.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: I do not care what's happening with tariffs, with this, with that.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: COVID never bothered me because I was like, oh, that's that's everyone else's economy.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's the outside economy.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: That's not my economy.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: My economy is always flourishing, my economy is always attracting new clients, my economy is always attracting more money into my economy.
- 57:03SPEAKER_00: So that's a mindset shift that you can definitely steal.
- 57:07SPEAKER_00: It's just almost like detaching yourself.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: You get to decide because even with all these things that are happening right now, people are still building wealth, people are still making multiple millions of dollars.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: So why not you?
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Why not you in whatever your economy looks like?
- 57:21SPEAKER_00: So that's one thing to absolutely hold.
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: And the other thing I always like to say is awareness is everything.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: Like if you've caught yourself watching something and like you're in this conversation or you're having maybe you you don't watch and you're in a conversation with a friend or a relative, someone in your family, and they're talking about the whole the thing and they're going in a spiral.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: Do not, when I say don't participate, don't participate in that conversation by saying the same thing.
- 57:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, I agree, oh yes.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: Because you you can't just be like, okay, bye.
- 57:52SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna talk to you, you know.
- 57:54SPEAKER_00: So you still have to actually actively be there.
- 57:56SPEAKER_00: But what I mean by that is don't participate in the scarcity.
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: Like just say, okay, yeah, I see that that's happening, but I refuse to believe it for myself.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: Or just nod and don't say a word.
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: Because when you participate in it, you put yourself into that scarcity as well.
- 58:11SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, so powerful.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: And we need to nominate this book for our next book club.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Quick.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: Vanessa and I are in book club together and our IRL book club, which is the best.
- 58:22SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so so powerful to, I love that.
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: That's not my economy piece.
- 58:31SPEAKER_01: And remembering too, that just like we can choose not to watch the news or not to, you know, slip into that algorithm, like we we do get to control our own algorithm and what we're consuming.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: So if you're surrounding yourself with expanders who are, you know, wildly profitable and share your values and are building the success that you want for your life, that's what you're gonna believe is possible for you too.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: So continue to expose yourself to more of that and get in the rooms with those women that are doing those big things.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and you'll see it all happening.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: You'll have the proof all around you.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 59:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that, the proof.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, final question.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: When you think of your favorite self, because of course I'm gonna ask you this, what kind of financial life has she created, not just for herself either, but for the people and the generations coming after her?
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love this.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: I love this.
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: When I think of her, I see her creating this life of, I'm gonna say financial ease is what's coming to my mind.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: And what I mean by that is having the money to have the whatever opportunity I want for myself, I want for my daughter, I want for the next generation.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: So that's what I mean by ease.
- 59:45SPEAKER_00: It's where the money is just there.
- 59:48SPEAKER_00: And so whatever opportunity we want, we can have.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: I also see her creating this ripple.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: And and the ripple is yes, with her clients and helping them build profitable businesses, but the ripple of what happens inside of their businesses.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_00: Because if I help one of my clients and let's just say the massage therapist, and her business becomes profitable, she supports more clients with their chronic pain.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: They get to then do whatever they're doing in their life, whether they are entrepreneurs themselves, some of them are athletes, and then they get to then port into their communities.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe they're entrepreneurs and they get to continue their business and they get to hire and they get to, you know, build this profitable business that for themselves creates like wealth for their families, the ripple of it.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: And so I see her not just creating wealth for herself, but seeing the ripple of the wealth that her clients are creating for their businesses and the people that are served through their business.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_00: Almost just like this like ripple of wealth.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: That would be what I see for her.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_01: Oh my God.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: So, so beautiful, Vanessa.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_01: And you are doing that.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: You are doing that life-changing world-changing work.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: Like that ripple effect is so real and so powerful because it's not just her rewriting her own money stories for her and maybe her daughter or her kids and that next generation, but just like you said, like the way she's able to then show up in her business and serve her clients so that they can be their favorite selves for their families and their community is like, oh, it's just having that being so rooted in that purpose is so, so powerful.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: So thank you so much for sharing that.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
