- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's the Almost Famous podcast. I'm here today coming to
- 0:08Speaker 2: you live from Carmel, California.
- 0:13Speaker 3: We're here at the AT and T pro Am.
- 0:15Speaker 2: This is our annual Almost Famous golf trip and right
- 0:20Speaker 2: now I am joined by Dean Bell. Dean, it's been
- 0:24Speaker 2: too long since you've been on the show. Yeah, too long?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Thanks? I agree. I agree.
- 0:31Speaker 2: You just had to do something and you've done it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We're going to talk today about your new show that's
- 0:37Speaker 2: coming out. Yeah, you are the star of this show.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I personally think it's going to be a fantastic show.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Well, first of all, I'm one of eleven other stars.
- 0:47Speaker 3: There's all the stars. In my mind. You are the
- 0:49Speaker 3: star of this show. It's like a proud father. Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 2: You're gonna be competing on the new HGTV show Bachelor
- 0:56Speaker 2: Mansion Takeover. Can you explain to all the listeners what
- 1:00Speaker 2: exactly this is?
- 1:02Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, it's a pretty straightforward concepts, right.
- 1:04Speaker 4: They got twelve past contestants from the Bachelor Bachelor app
- 1:09Speaker 4: all with either like design or DIY or construction backgrounds
- 1:14Speaker 4: and put us all together and let us compete I
- 1:17Speaker 4: guess with designing rooms. So like the first challenge, we
- 1:23Speaker 4: get sent into teams and we have to design the
- 1:27Speaker 4: bedroom areas.
- 1:30Speaker 3: While working in a team. And it was really fun
- 1:32Speaker 3: because I like that stuff.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I like diy, I like building, I like taking risks
- 1:37Speaker 4: when it comes to like designing things, and so it
- 1:40Speaker 4: was fun to be part of that.
- 1:42Speaker 2: The I think the show will be well received. I
- 1:47Speaker 2: do think it's a fun concept. My one question is,
- 1:51Speaker 2: how would they ever do a season two?
- 1:54Speaker 4: I was asking them that the exact same question, and
- 1:56Speaker 4: they're like, well, shoot, if it's successful enough, we'll just
- 1:58Speaker 4: rip all this stuff out.
- 2:01Speaker 3: That's pretty cool. That's wild.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yeah. So yeah, I'm excited to watch it.
- 2:07Speaker 3: I don't know, like.
- 2:10Speaker 4: So interesting because when I went on the Bachelorette the
- 2:12Speaker 4: first time, I had never watched a Bachelorette And obviously
- 2:14Speaker 4: I've never watched the show because it's never this is
- 2:16Speaker 4: the only scenes as they've ever ever done of it.
- 2:18Speaker 4: So I always try to like temper my expectations when
- 2:21Speaker 4: it comes to watching it, and especially now this time around,
- 2:25Speaker 4: now that I'm married and my life is all set
- 2:27Speaker 4: up in Colorado and all that stuff, it's weird being
- 2:29Speaker 4: back on a television show because I just give way
- 2:31Speaker 4: less f's for lack of a better word, you know,
- 2:36Speaker 4: and for better or for worse. I'm not sure if
- 2:38Speaker 4: it's gonna hurt me or help me. But it was
- 2:41Speaker 4: just fun to like mess around and have some fun.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And you enjoyed the experience overall. Would you say you
- 2:46Speaker 2: had a good time overall?
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it was great.
- 2:50Speaker 4: I mean I can't give too much information obviously, otherwise
- 2:53Speaker 4: my nda will be you know.
- 2:56Speaker 3: But you can tell me if you had a good
- 2:58Speaker 3: good time or not. Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I was gonna go give specific examples of like how
- 3:01Speaker 4: or why I had a good time and stuff.
- 3:03Speaker 3: But yeah, I had a great time. It was fun.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Like I said, I like building and I like thinking
- 3:07Speaker 4: and creating, and so I got to do all that.
- 3:10Speaker 3: There.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Fans right now are excited about this show coming out.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But I do think there is a group of fans
- 3:17Speaker 2: we're a little nervous because they love this iconic mansion.
- 3:21Speaker 2: They've watched it, they've celebrated it, they love the mansion.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Do you feel like the show respects.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And honors how this mansion has always been perceived or
- 3:31Speaker 2: will fans have to get ready for a brand new look.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, great question, Ben.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I think that the contestants of the show really did
- 3:41Speaker 4: a good job with taking everything into consideration with the house.
- 3:45Speaker 4: The house was about like like a Spanish style architecture,
- 3:48Speaker 4: and at least the challenges that I remember. I do
- 3:53Speaker 4: think everyone took all that into consideration and did their
- 3:56Speaker 4: best effort to maintain but just improve.
- 3:59Speaker 2: It is a competition show, and you are very talented.
- 4:03Speaker 2: If you follow Dean on social media or Kaelan on
- 4:06Speaker 2: social media, see some of the projects that Dean has
- 4:08Speaker 2: completed and worked on for their home, and he is
- 4:12Speaker 2: spectacular when it comes to carpentry design, that creative kind
- 4:18Speaker 2: of part of the brain that so many of us lack.
- 4:22Speaker 2: But if this is a competition show, are you a
- 4:25Speaker 2: competitive person?
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:27Speaker 4: I mean I grew up with two older brothers, so
- 4:29Speaker 4: I've kind of got this weird dilemma in my life
- 4:32Speaker 4: when it comes to competitiveness is I'm super competitive. I
- 4:35Speaker 4: always want to win, but because I have two older brothers,
- 4:38Speaker 4: I always lost growing up. So I'm so competitive, but
- 4:42Speaker 4: I am so comfortable losing. And it's just like this
- 4:46Speaker 4: weird catch twenty two. I feel like right where I
- 4:49Speaker 4: try so hard to win but I rarely ever do,
- 4:53Speaker 4: and I do think that the competitive nature for all
- 4:57Speaker 4: of the contestants on this show really shine through. It's
- 5:00Speaker 4: gonna be interesting. Like I've been watching Traders right this
- 5:03Speaker 4: new season Traders for the first time, and they're like
- 5:06Speaker 4: way more cutthroat on that show than I think we
- 5:08Speaker 4: were on this show. Like this is an HGTV renovation show,
- 5:10Speaker 4: so I don't really watch a lot of television to
- 5:13Speaker 4: begin with, so that's kind of all I have to
- 5:14Speaker 4: really compare it to. But I'm pretty sure everyone was
- 5:17Speaker 4: very competitive on that show, to the point where it
- 5:19Speaker 4: was like.
- 5:20Speaker 3: People were yelling, some people were crying.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Some people were fighting, And you know, it's hard when
- 5:27Speaker 4: so many people are working together on a small space
- 5:29Speaker 4: to get your idea out there and on top because
- 5:32Speaker 4: other people are gonna have different ideas that they're going
- 5:34Speaker 4: to disagree with yours and you have to fight for years.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And it was just a really interesting dynamic because typically
- 5:40Speaker 4: the only person I have to fight with on a
- 5:42Speaker 4: design idea is my wife, and she wins one hundred
- 5:44Speaker 4: percent of the time. So you know, it's gonna be
- 5:47Speaker 4: fun to watch.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I think the concept for the show it feels like
- 5:52Speaker 2: the show will work if people take ownership in the process.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Was there a moment during the filming of the show where.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You're like, Okay, people actually care to make this not
- 6:01Speaker 2: only great because I want to win, but great because
- 6:05Speaker 2: we're enjoying the idea that we're on.
- 6:07Speaker 3: A television show to renovate. Yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I mean it was really interesting to see everyone was
- 6:14Speaker 4: basically taking because you know, we would be done filming
- 6:17Speaker 4: the show at by like seven pm, let's say, for example,
- 6:20Speaker 4: and at nine pm I'd bump into people like on
- 6:23Speaker 4: their laptops coming up with skews and ideas for this competition,
- 6:28Speaker 4: and I was like, wow, you guys are really like
- 6:29Speaker 4: taking this home and doing your homework and trying really hard.
- 6:32Speaker 4: And I'm like sitting at the bar drinking some whiskey. Yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 4: I should probably try a little bit harder for this.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:37Speaker 4: So there's a lot of ownership I think that a
- 6:39Speaker 4: lot of those people had, And it's just it's hard
- 6:43Speaker 4: when you're when you're filming that all day and then
- 6:45Speaker 4: to come home and and obsessed about it even more
- 6:48Speaker 4: because then you're like just so involved in it, you know.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it is something that obviously people from all seasons
- 6:56Speaker 2: of the Bachelor and Bachelorette and Golden Bachelor were part of.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Was there somebody that you connected to specifically that you
- 7:03Speaker 2: could share maybe that you didn't really know before the show.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't really know any of the contestants before
- 7:10Speaker 4: the show. The only one I had spent even a
- 7:12Speaker 4: little bit of time with was Noah, and that was
- 7:14Speaker 4: like we golfed together twice when we both lived in California.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I really, I mean, I like the guys just because
- 7:22Speaker 4: kind of like what we talked about last night, it's
- 7:23Speaker 4: like a bit of a fraternity, right, you kind of
- 7:25Speaker 4: bond over your shared experiences. I think Jill and I
- 7:29Speaker 4: got along great. I think Jill's awesome. She's hilarious, right,
- 7:33Speaker 4: and she's just such a wild card. And it's kind
- 7:35Speaker 4: of fun to be around those types of people because
- 7:36Speaker 4: you never know what they're going to say.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Next, and so I enjoyed that a lot.
- 7:39Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean, I will say for a renovation show,
- 7:42Speaker 4: there's a lot more drama than I expected there to be.
- 7:56Speaker 3: What was the most challenging part for you filming this?
- 8:01Speaker 4: I mean it's I'm sure you feel this way sometimes
- 8:04Speaker 4: because you travel quite a bit when you when you
- 8:07Speaker 4: embark on a new like trip or whatever, for especially
- 8:12Speaker 4: something like this for an unknown amount of time. You
- 8:15Speaker 4: you start by being really excited about it, and by like,
- 8:19Speaker 4: especially now that you have a daughter, I can only
- 8:21Speaker 4: imagine how much worse it is for you. But by
- 8:23Speaker 4: like the third or fourth day, you're like, man, I
- 8:24Speaker 4: just miss my miss my wife, I miss my dog,
- 8:27Speaker 4: my cat, my home. And I feel like the older
- 8:30Speaker 4: I get, the more I kind of like being home more,
- 8:33Speaker 4: and so being away from home for however long it
- 8:35Speaker 4: might have been the biggest challenge.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I think, Yeah, it's a new that's a new thing
- 8:41Speaker 2: for me. Yeah, as I've gotten older, it wasn't a problem.
- 8:44Speaker 2: When I was in my twenties. I could have been
- 8:45Speaker 2: gone for months without a problem. Now four days feels
- 8:49Speaker 2: like a year. Yeah, and I could understand how that
- 8:52Speaker 2: would be difficult.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It was. It was nice.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I think this show was different than obviously all the
- 8:58Speaker 4: ones that I've already done before this, but other maybe
- 9:01Speaker 4: competition style shows too, because we got our phones at
- 9:03Speaker 4: the end of the night, so I could like call
- 9:04Speaker 4: Kaylin or you know, I can still be kind of
- 9:06Speaker 4: updated with what's going on with her life, so at
- 9:08Speaker 4: least I was still connected and attached to the home,
- 9:11Speaker 4: to my home, I guess. But it's just, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 4: you sometimes just want to be there.
- 9:16Speaker 2: You One of the things that have always I think
- 9:18Speaker 2: fans have admired about you, but also sometimes made fans
- 9:23Speaker 2: a little bit sad is that you have never like
- 9:26Speaker 2: pushed and desired to be on television, Like fame was
- 9:29Speaker 2: never your pursuit in all of this. It was a
- 9:31Speaker 2: good experience, a good story. But this puts you back
- 9:34Speaker 2: on television again, and knowing you and your skill set,
- 9:37Speaker 2: you will shine on this show and your personality. You're
- 9:40Speaker 2: good on TV, You're fun to watch. Did being a
- 9:43Speaker 2: part of the show make you have a desire to
- 9:46Speaker 2: go back on TV again?
- 9:48Speaker 4: I think I think we all, having done the original shows,
- 9:52Speaker 4: kind of always have a desire for going back on
- 9:55Speaker 4: TV in whatever capacity.
- 9:56Speaker 3: It is.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Like I never necessarily didn't want to go back on TV.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I just didn't really put the effort into getting back
- 10:03Speaker 4: on a TV.
- 10:04Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:04Speaker 2: That was kind of my point, just saying like a
- 10:05Speaker 2: nicer way.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Like I I'm a big advocate for letting the universe
- 10:13Speaker 4: come to you, I guess. And then the show just
- 10:15Speaker 4: kind of fell into my lap, which was great. But no,
- 10:19Speaker 4: I'll be I filmed a new TV show every single
- 10:21Speaker 4: year if they asked me to. So you're glad you
- 10:23Speaker 4: did this. I'll tell you after the season's over, because
- 10:26Speaker 4: I was a real bitch sometimes and I don't know
- 10:30Speaker 4: if it was gonna be received.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Well, Oh goodness. A couple of questions written in from
- 10:35Speaker 3: our listeners.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Really one here for anyone listening who's intimidated by doing
- 10:41Speaker 2: a DIY project at their own home, what advice do
- 10:44Speaker 2: you have for them?
- 10:46Speaker 4: It's a really good question, Ben or whoever asked that question.
- 10:48Speaker 4: I suppose, Yeah, I mean I didn't. I didn't even
- 10:51Speaker 4: know how to use like a skill saw until about
- 10:53Speaker 4: seven or eight years ago. And I think it just
- 10:56Speaker 4: like slowly getting more confident with the tools has helped
- 10:59Speaker 4: me a lot. Like I remember when I when I
- 11:00Speaker 4: first started to probably like built Kalen a bench in
- 11:02Speaker 4: her apartment in California, and I was like scared I
- 11:04Speaker 4: was gonna chop all my fingers off the first time
- 11:06Speaker 4: I built something, you know, And now it's like I'm
- 11:08Speaker 4: like using a table saw and the minersaw at the
- 11:10Speaker 4: same time, which is obviously super dangerous, But I just
- 11:13Speaker 4: I think building a confidence a confidence skill set with
- 11:16Speaker 4: your tools is really good. And then when it comes
- 11:19Speaker 4: to like our house, because I've done a lot of
- 11:20Speaker 4: renovations in our own home and in my van, and
- 11:24Speaker 4: I think the most important thing is to be willing
- 11:26Speaker 4: to fail a lot. And I've kind of stopped pursuing
- 11:30Speaker 4: perfection a lot too, because at first I held myself
- 11:34Speaker 4: so accountable for a perfect product, and I'm just not
- 11:37Speaker 4: good enough to ever receee or to take get a
- 11:39Speaker 4: perfect finish on anything. So I just kind of have
- 11:42Speaker 4: started telling Kalen everything I build has rustic charm to it.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it's a little bit easier that way.
- 11:46Speaker 4: So if you're thinking about getting into like the DII stuff,
- 11:49Speaker 4: and the reason I even got into it in the
- 11:51Speaker 4: first place was just because, especially in Colorado, like labor
- 11:54Speaker 4: is so expensive. Sure, so if I can save on
- 11:56Speaker 4: the labor and just spend a little bit more on
- 11:58Speaker 4: the material or the tools or whatever it is, then
- 12:01Speaker 4: it's like my girl math brain is doing. I'm like, oh,
- 12:03Speaker 4: I saved us twenty thousand dollars on this, you know,
- 12:06Speaker 4: and that part has been really nice, because you know,
- 12:10Speaker 4: you save money, you're learn any skill, you have fun,
- 12:13Speaker 4: and your wife is proud of you.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Most of the time. She's always pready.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking to your wife as we close up here,
- 12:19Speaker 2: give us any updates on you and Kaylen.
- 12:21Speaker 3: How have you been doing, how's the relationship? What's going on? Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 3: we're doing good. Thanks for asking.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I don't I don't really have much of an update
- 12:29Speaker 4: for anyone in any aspect, but I think I think
- 12:32Speaker 4: things are good.
- 12:33Speaker 3: You might have to ask her. She might have a
- 12:34Speaker 3: different answer.
- 12:35Speaker 2: But Bachelor Mansion Takeover premieres on Monday, March second, eight
- 12:40Speaker 2: pm Eastern Time on HGTV. Each new episode will be
- 12:44Speaker 2: available to stream the next day on HBO Max and
- 12:48Speaker 2: Discovery Plus. Bachelor Mansion Takeover star Dean Bell.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Are you gonna watch? Ben? I will one hundred percent
- 12:55Speaker 3: watch you if.
- 12:56Speaker 4: You watch that show and you're really impressed by me,
- 13:00Speaker 4: which just you know, could go either way. Would you
- 13:02Speaker 4: ever ask me to come and help you with the
- 13:04Speaker 4: renovation in your house?
- 13:05Speaker 3: Oh?
- 13:05Speaker 2: Well, I would absolutely love for you to help me
- 13:07Speaker 2: with the renovation of my house.
- 13:08Speaker 3: What do we do?
- 13:09Speaker 2: We would probably rip out some carpet and lay down
- 13:11Speaker 2: some hardwoods.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's pretty that's pretty basic stuff. We could do that,
- 13:15Speaker 4: even if I'm not gonna are you hoping? I said, Bill,
- 13:18Speaker 4: I know you got a new deck. I kind of
- 13:19Speaker 4: wish you let me build your deck.
- 13:20Speaker 2: There's there's the front deck that I definitely need to
- 13:23Speaker 2: redo too.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I could do that. We could do that together. Yeah, yeah, I've.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I mean, the idea of doing this alongside of you,
- 13:31Speaker 2: of HGTV stars and be working on my house and
- 13:35Speaker 2: I wouldn't pay you a dime sounds so good, right, Thanks.
- 13:41Speaker 3: For jumping on, buddy, Yeah, thanks for having me.
