- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside of reclining Lance, Lynn, Matt Holliday, Kyle
- 0:15Speaker 1: Gibson also with us. Lance probably a little bit upset
- 0:18Speaker 1: because we started the podcast and it was a false
- 0:21Speaker 1: start because someone called and knocked me off the broadcast.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hopefully everything is straightened out. Hello, gentlemen, how's everybody doing?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Really good? Good Jim? Just so you know, Jim, we
- 0:35Speaker 2: just had our first taste of the intro of the
- 0:37Speaker 2: show without you, and it kind of was gold took
- 0:40Speaker 2: a shot Golden Globe black. He took a shot at
- 0:43Speaker 2: the lack of a Golden Globe nomination, and I think
- 0:45Speaker 2: we just figured out how we might be able to
- 0:48Speaker 2: get one and listen, I don't.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Want to air our dirty laundry. I did say on
- 0:52Speaker 1: Twitter that we might have won the Golden Globe for
- 0:56Speaker 1: podcasting if Kyle was a little better, but we all
- 0:58Speaker 1: have to pick up our games.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, about whatever.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Do they announce a Golden Globe or stuff like this
- 1:06Speaker 3: on the Golden Globes.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yes, they had a category for podcasting.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Who won?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Some podcast I never heard of. It wasn't a j
- 1:18Speaker 1: Prezenski for foul territory.
- 1:21Speaker 4: See that's your bars, that's all of our boss.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Right. We're on his We are on his platform is
- 1:28Speaker 1: to get all right, so we better get to it
- 1:29Speaker 1: or we're going to get mean emails from aj Prezenski.
- 1:32Speaker 1: We do have a cardinal move to talk about. They
- 1:36Speaker 1: did sign veteran reliever Ryan Stanek to a one year
- 1:40Speaker 1: deal three point five million with a club option. Saint
- 1:44Speaker 1: Louis native born in Saint Louis. Last year rough one
- 1:48Speaker 1: with the Mats. Gets lots of strikeouts ten point four
- 1:52Speaker 1: per nine innings in his career and excellent postseason numbers.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So when I look at that, he's a guy they
- 2:00Speaker 1: could use in a bullpen now as a piece. He's
- 2:03Speaker 1: also a guy that seems if you're not in contention,
- 2:07Speaker 1: you probably could get something for flipping Matt. You weren't
- 2:10Speaker 1: here last week. Just your thoughts on the Cardinals signing.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think this is one of those deals where,
- 2:20Speaker 3: like you said, you know, you take some of these
- 2:22Speaker 3: these uh, these bullpen pieces, and they tend to go
- 2:26Speaker 3: in cycles. Right, they have a good year and then
- 2:28Speaker 3: sometimes they have a down year, and then they recent
- 2:31Speaker 3: they rebound and have a really good year. I think
- 2:34Speaker 3: he's a candidate for a rebound of a really good year.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And like you're talking about, these are the kind of
- 2:39Speaker 3: signings where, uh, if you're not competing and the deadline
- 2:44Speaker 3: closes in, you can flip him for a minor league prospect,
- 2:49Speaker 3: probably a minor league pitching prospect.
- 2:53Speaker 4: And so these are these are these You.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Know, three point five million is nothing on this payroll. Uh,
- 2:58Speaker 3: So you get a guy that throws a hundred mile
- 3:00Speaker 3: an hour that strikes people out that if he kind
- 3:02Speaker 3: of gets his stuff back together and and uh and
- 3:05Speaker 3: goes out and has a fairly dominating season. Uh, he's
- 3:10Speaker 3: the kind of guy you trade at the deadline and
- 3:11Speaker 3: and you continue to build your farm system and add
- 3:15Speaker 3: ad pieces uh for the next few years. So I
- 3:19Speaker 3: like these kind of signings. If you're not going for it,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I like, I like, I like these type of signings.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And these are these are these are another plus another
- 3:26Speaker 3: way for player acquisition. You know, when you start talking
- 3:29Speaker 3: about the draft, international signings, and then you you know,
- 3:33Speaker 3: you start to sign one year free agent deals and
- 3:37Speaker 3: then and you trade them for prospects. So I like it.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think that it's as necessarily a
- 3:42Speaker 3: Neil mover as far as wins and losses with the
- 3:44Speaker 3: Cardinals go, But I certainly think it could potentially end them,
- 3:48Speaker 3: end up with them getting a piece that they can
- 3:52Speaker 3: use moving forward.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Now, Lamps, you were a guy that the Cardinals quietly
- 3:56Speaker 1: reached out to about being a piece of the bullpen
- 3:59Speaker 1: last year. This is part of the reset, isn't it.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I mean you're looking at a guy that probably had
- 4:07Speaker 5: a bad year because you know, the medsine and all
- 4:10Speaker 5: honestly over used their bulk because they had you.
- 4:14Speaker 4: But really, I love it.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I love it.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Good lord.
- 4:24Speaker 5: But I think he's I think he's a good piece,
- 4:25Speaker 5: and I think a rebound year is good for a
- 4:27Speaker 5: guy with his stuff and what he's done, and he's
- 4:29Speaker 5: kind of found himself into these one year deals and
- 4:31Speaker 5: getting traded to contenders at deadline, so he's got a
- 4:33Speaker 5: place to pitch it and really help a young Wulfan.
- 4:36Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be a good fit all the
- 4:37Speaker 4: way around.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Then, Kyle, you always talk about the ability to flip
- 4:42Speaker 1: a guy at the deadline. That's that's currency unto itself.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think it's it's one of those
- 4:49Speaker 2: moves that if your team overperforms a little bit and
- 4:54Speaker 2: puts you in a good spot around the deadline, then
- 4:57Speaker 2: you know, maybe he's somebody that's a reason why you
- 5:00Speaker 2: guys are having a better year and you hold on
- 5:02Speaker 2: to him, or you know, you spend the two thirds
- 5:05Speaker 2: of the season on salary and essentially you know, buy
- 5:08Speaker 2: your prospects, you know, by paying that part of the salary.
- 5:12Speaker 2: You know, I am not a fan of the idea
- 5:16Speaker 2: that you sign a guy to trade him. I'm assuming
- 5:19Speaker 2: there is some value here that you know he can
- 5:22Speaker 2: add to the bullpen as as a veteran and doing
- 5:24Speaker 2: that and then you know, hopefully the young guys take
- 5:27Speaker 2: the step and you're talking about keeping him, and you're
- 5:29Speaker 2: talking about him adding to the leverage situation and the
- 5:32Speaker 2: leverage innings for this team. I think we all know
- 5:35Speaker 2: what a good bullpen can do for a team. And
- 5:37Speaker 2: I think if you're gonna throw out some young starters
- 5:40Speaker 2: and you're gonna have maybe a rotation that is not
- 5:43Speaker 2: as experienced, then you know, having extra quality bullpen arms
- 5:49Speaker 2: is a way that you're going to have to bolster that.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So meantime, gentlemen, the Cubs, I seem to be bulking
- 5:57Speaker 1: up a little bit right You look at the moves
- 5:59Speaker 1: that they've already made it the they trade for Cabrera,
- 6:02Speaker 1: they signed Mayton, and they just signed Alex Bragman to
- 6:06Speaker 1: a really big contract. The one thing that strikes me
- 6:11Speaker 1: about this, outside of the Cubs obviously going all in Matt,
- 6:16Speaker 1: is that, okay, so Bragman's off the board Cardinals sure
- 6:22Speaker 1: like traydon with the with the Red Sox. Uh, does
- 6:26Speaker 1: that open a path? Do you think that that's inevitable
- 6:29Speaker 1: that there could be something there? You got Arnatto, you
- 6:32Speaker 1: got Donovan. There have been rumors swirling before.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I look, I think it just as
- 6:40Speaker 3: it depends on how young the Red Sox are ready
- 6:42Speaker 3: to go. You know, I think they have you know,
- 6:46Speaker 3: his name is slipping my mind right now.
- 6:48Speaker 4: But they have.
- 6:50Speaker 3: They have a young infielder, left hand hitter. Last year
- 6:55Speaker 3: that came up. He's one of their top prospects in
- 6:58Speaker 3: all of baseball. I think he got hurt and ended
- 7:02Speaker 3: up missing maybe the last month or two.
- 7:06Speaker 4: I don't know why.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I can't think of his name, but anyway, I think
- 7:10Speaker 3: he's a potential candidate to slide into third base. Uh,
- 7:14Speaker 3: but I do.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Look, I mean, if the Red Sox are going for it,
- 7:16Speaker 3: trying to win the World Series, they looking to replace
- 7:19Speaker 3: a veteran, you know, if you've got Alex Bregman and
- 7:22Speaker 3: you're looking to replace a fellow veteran third baseman. And
- 7:25Speaker 3: and I think Nolan's out power production and I think
- 7:29Speaker 3: his overall offensive production at Finway Park I think would
- 7:33Speaker 3: go up. And I think that that's somewhere he wants
- 7:36Speaker 3: to be, somewhere that that uh, he certainly would would
- 7:40Speaker 3: approve a trade to. So uh, it certainly enhances I
- 7:44Speaker 3: think the the idea that he could end up in
- 7:47Speaker 3: in in Boston with Alex sonning in Chicago. Uh. So
- 7:51Speaker 3: it'll be interesting to see what happens. But yeah, I mean,
- 7:53Speaker 3: I think you look at the Cubs, they seem to
- 7:57Speaker 3: be trending back towards you know, the Cubs that we
- 8:00Speaker 3: remember when we were playing when when when they're going
- 8:03Speaker 3: for it, and and they're they're back, uh, looking to
- 8:07Speaker 3: to take that next step and and try to win
- 8:09Speaker 3: the World Series.
- 8:10Speaker 1: So he's uh.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I just actually was.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Just around him for four or five days in Arizona,
- 8:16Speaker 3: and he's he's uh, you know, Bregman is a full
- 8:19Speaker 3: of energy, great with the young players, really good in
- 8:24Speaker 3: the clubhouse. Uh So it's gonna be a great, great
- 8:27Speaker 3: ad for the Cubs. And and you know, like I said,
- 8:31Speaker 3: it looks to me like they are heading heading towards
- 8:35Speaker 3: trying to to really try to go for it again.
- 8:39Speaker 1: So that's what the Cubs are doing. Lance In terms
- 8:42Speaker 1: of what the Cardinals are doing, uh right, we're seeing
- 8:47Speaker 1: what they're doing. They are certainly looking toward the future
- 8:51Speaker 1: with the moves they made because they even increased their
- 8:56Speaker 1: their rating, and in terms of the minor leaguers with
- 8:58Speaker 1: the guys they've added with young talent. But that's a
- 9:01Speaker 1: far different path than the Cubs are taken.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean the Cubs were there a couple of
- 9:06Speaker 5: years ago though, so you're in the same boat. Divisions
- 9:11Speaker 5: go in waves of things like that. The Cardinals will
- 9:13Speaker 5: put themselves in a good spot in the minor leagues
- 9:16Speaker 5: to see what they have, what positions they need to fill,
- 9:19Speaker 5: you know, kind of what you're you know, your your
- 9:21Speaker 5: two to three year window looks like now what you
- 9:25Speaker 5: have coming. But when it comes to that too, you
- 9:28Speaker 5: got to figure out who on the market could help
- 9:30Speaker 5: that window, uh kind of help when those guys show
- 9:34Speaker 5: up that they have people that can help them, help
- 9:37Speaker 5: win games and also help develop at the big league level.
- 9:41Speaker 5: So I think they're in a in a kind of
- 9:42Speaker 5: a weird spot right now where you have a lot
- 9:44Speaker 5: of young guys that with not a lot of veteran guys.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Especially if you lose Aeronauto at the trade deadline or
- 9:51Speaker 5: if you trade him this winter and stuff like that,
- 9:53Speaker 5: you're looking at a whole lineup of young.
- 9:55Speaker 4: People that are not established.
- 9:57Speaker 5: So you know, what can you find to help supplement
- 10:01Speaker 5: the every day in and out of being a big leader,
- 10:04Speaker 5: but also guys that can put up production that can
- 10:07Speaker 5: also help put those guys in spots to succeeds. So
- 10:10Speaker 5: there's a lot of different ways you can still put
- 10:13Speaker 5: a product that can win on the field and still
- 10:16Speaker 5: be rebuilding the retooling or whatever they're doing, because they
- 10:21Speaker 5: do have the money. It's not like they're short on money.
- 10:23Speaker 5: I think their payroll is going to be somewhere in
- 10:25Speaker 5: the one hundred to one twenty range, especially if they
- 10:28Speaker 5: get rid of Aeronauto and you're looking at, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 5: a spot where you can add big league pieces to
- 10:35Speaker 5: what do you have a young core of position players
- 10:38Speaker 5: to do these things to where you can where you
- 10:40Speaker 5: can make people. I mean, Milwaukee's done it every year technically,
- 10:44Speaker 5: so things like that are very doable. So we'll see,
- 10:48Speaker 5: you know, what route they take, why they're developing these
- 10:51Speaker 5: guys that are that they're acquiring in trades.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Kyle, do you see that Bregman going to the Cubs
- 10:59Speaker 1: does open up up the possibility of a path for
- 11:03Speaker 1: a deal with the Cardinals? Do you think that that
- 11:06Speaker 1: is a good possibility of happening.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I think there's two parts of this that are really
- 11:11Speaker 2: interesting to meet. One had a really fun interaction this
- 11:16Speaker 2: morning with a fan on on social media that you know,
- 11:19Speaker 2: I just made the comment last week about Aeronauta being
- 11:22Speaker 2: an asset, and we just kind of talked a little
- 11:23Speaker 2: bit about his game. And I think it's really interesting
- 11:26Speaker 2: that Cardinals fans somewhat see him as a fading non
- 11:33Speaker 2: average or above average big leaguer and a team that
- 11:36Speaker 2: is going for it is going to add him to
- 11:38Speaker 2: be the third basement. I just want to let that
- 11:40Speaker 2: sink in a little bit. I think that's a point
- 11:42Speaker 2: that shouldn't be overlooked. So who knows if he's going
- 11:46Speaker 2: to get trade or ware. But the Boston Red Sox
- 11:49Speaker 2: going for the World Series could be a suitor and
- 11:51Speaker 2: they want no one Aeronauta at third base, So he's
- 11:54Speaker 2: an important player for whoever he's going to play for.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I think the other interesting thing going to the Cubs
- 11:59Speaker 2: is that the Milwaukee Brewers have kind of had the
- 12:03Speaker 2: effect on the NL Central in my mind that the
- 12:06Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Rays have had on the NL on the
- 12:09Speaker 2: Al East.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:10Speaker 2: So the Tampa bay Rays maybe not as much the
- 12:13Speaker 2: last two years, but they really forced the Yankees and
- 12:17Speaker 2: the Blue Jays to spend more money to be able
- 12:19Speaker 2: to beat them and to feel like they could keep
- 12:22Speaker 2: up with them and you know, overtake them in October
- 12:25Speaker 2: and or September to win the division. And now you
- 12:28Speaker 2: see teams like Chicago trading for starting pitching, signing extra players,
- 12:33Speaker 2: and bolstering a team that already has a high payroll,
- 12:36Speaker 2: making sure they feel like they have zero holes in
- 12:39Speaker 2: that roster because I'm guessing in their mind, that's what
- 12:43Speaker 2: they think they need in order to win this division.
- 12:46Speaker 2: It's just really interesting that a team like the Brewers
- 12:49Speaker 2: and how they've structured that team with a lower pay roll.
- 12:53Speaker 2: You know, Pat Murphy doing a great job up there,
- 12:56Speaker 2: you know, getting those guys to play together and have
- 12:57Speaker 2: the right complimentary pieces. I think it's interesting how those
- 13:00Speaker 2: kind of teams have an effect on divisions in the
- 13:02Speaker 2: division races.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And while the Brewers are not doing too much, I
- 13:07Speaker 1: mean they've been kind of quiet compared to the Cubs.
- 13:10Speaker 1: They're going to go about it in the Brewer fashion.
- 13:13Speaker 1: There is sort of the elephant in the room as
- 13:17Speaker 1: teams try to figure out how much money they have
- 13:19Speaker 1: to make the moves, and that's the broadcast rights, which
- 13:23Speaker 1: will impact me one way or the other, hopefully for
- 13:26Speaker 1: the better. But Matt, if you're a general manager and
- 13:30Speaker 1: you don't know if you're going to get this much
- 13:32Speaker 1: money from a fan duel or an unknown amount from MLB,
- 13:39Speaker 1: because MLB is gonna end up taking over the broadcast
- 13:42Speaker 1: rights of some of these teams. And MLB's practice is
- 13:46Speaker 1: we'll get all the advertising together and we'll figure out
- 13:49Speaker 1: what your cut is. So there's nothing definitive about here's
- 13:54Speaker 1: the set amounts you're gonna get. You're gonna have to
- 13:56Speaker 1: just roll with it. Don't you think that's going to
- 13:58Speaker 1: impact some teams.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Yes, I think it impacts the teams where Look, there's
- 14:09Speaker 3: there's owners out there that this does not impact, right,
- 14:13Speaker 3: they don't care.
- 14:14Speaker 4: They have money.
- 14:17Speaker 3: They look at this like they want to win at
- 14:19Speaker 3: all costs if they're even if they have to take
- 14:22Speaker 3: a little bit of a loss annually, so to speak,
- 14:25Speaker 3: if you're if you're losing money this year. I think
- 14:29Speaker 3: there's there's tons of well not tons of but I
- 14:31Speaker 3: think there's a lot of owners that that see the
- 14:34Speaker 3: bigger picture, and a lot of them that have owned
- 14:37Speaker 3: their teams for a while. I think they can look
- 14:39Speaker 3: at the value of when they bought the team or
- 14:43Speaker 3: how much they have invested it in the team ownership,
- 14:47Speaker 3: and then what they could sell it for if they
- 14:49Speaker 3: put it on the market today, and how much these
- 14:52Speaker 3: organizations and these sports teams are selling for and and so, Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 3: she might be in the red this year, but if
- 15:00Speaker 3: you look at the big picture, your investment is probably
- 15:05Speaker 3: ten x your investment probably more depending on.
- 15:08Speaker 4: How long you've owned these teams.
- 15:10Speaker 3: So I always think about it like that, like how
- 15:13Speaker 3: competitive are you as an owner? Are you willing to
- 15:16Speaker 3: lose a little bit now based on the fact that
- 15:18Speaker 3: you're not sure about your TV contract uh and how
- 15:21Speaker 3: much exact money you're gonna have You're gonna have revenue
- 15:24Speaker 3: sharing for a lot of these teams. So I think
- 15:28Speaker 3: there's several several ways to look at this. I do
- 15:31Speaker 3: think the the impending ending of the the collective barting agreement, UH,
- 15:37Speaker 3: the potential of a workstoppage, the the TV contracts, I
- 15:43Speaker 3: think this does muddle the waters for a lot of owners.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And what they're there certainty is on their cost and
- 15:50Speaker 3: how much they're willing to spend in free agency and
- 15:53Speaker 3: how much they're willing to to to gamble on on
- 15:57Speaker 3: on certain things. But I I just still go back
- 16:00Speaker 3: to the fact that there's there's there's competitive owners that
- 16:02Speaker 3: want to win the World Series, and they have they
- 16:06Speaker 3: have the money, they have the I think they they
- 16:10Speaker 3: look at it like more of a long term investment
- 16:14Speaker 3: to where it these values of these organize, these sports
- 16:18Speaker 3: organizations continue to just go up more and more to
- 16:23Speaker 3: where you see even small market teams selling for in
- 16:26Speaker 3: the billions and and most of these owners probably bought
- 16:30Speaker 3: in in the hundreds of millions. And so I'm not
- 16:34Speaker 3: a like a you know, obviously, I think everyone knows
- 16:37Speaker 3: I just have a high school education.
- 16:39Speaker 4: But I I look.
- 16:41Speaker 3: At like, you know, I'm guessing that these owners can
- 16:45Speaker 3: can figure out that if they ever needed to sell
- 16:50Speaker 3: the organization, Uh, they would do pretty handsomely on the
- 16:55Speaker 3: on the trade for what what they paid for it.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Because no Major League Baseball team, probably no NFL team
- 17:04Speaker 1: or NBA team either has lost value. It's never happened.
- 17:08Speaker 1: The value always goes up and up and up. If
- 17:12Speaker 1: you were an owner, Lancelin, would that impact the way
- 17:15Speaker 1: you would handle the off season.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Your TV rights are?
- 17:18Speaker 5: You're kind of like, hey, I think that a lot
- 17:21Speaker 5: of markets look at them that's kind of my bottom
- 17:23Speaker 5: line of hey, here's my yearly spending and stuff like that.
- 17:27Speaker 5: But for me, when you're looking at a market like
- 17:29Speaker 5: the Cardinals, they're always been tied to their ticket sales.
- 17:33Speaker 5: I feel like, and right now it's like ticket sales
- 17:36Speaker 5: are not where they are because you're not showing me
- 17:38Speaker 5: that you're going for anything. So until they get ticket
- 17:42Speaker 5: sales back up, they're going to be in this boat.
- 17:44Speaker 5: And the only way to get ticket sales back up
- 17:46Speaker 5: is to show your show you're going for it, or
- 17:49Speaker 5: you're showing that you're you know, you're trying to improve
- 17:51Speaker 5: your big league roster somewhere or some you know, somehow,
- 17:55Speaker 5: So you know, TV rights are what they are. I
- 17:59Speaker 5: think we know what's coming in the sense of there's
- 18:02Speaker 5: some things brewing of TV rights coming and you're seeing
- 18:06Speaker 5: them kind of all. I think everything's based on the
- 18:09Speaker 5: next CBA, And I don't think Manford wants to put
- 18:12Speaker 5: anything on the books until the new CBA is in
- 18:15Speaker 5: because then the players can't ask for it when they're
- 18:18Speaker 5: trying to do what they're trying to do. So this
- 18:20Speaker 5: whole holding pattern is based on them holding their cards
- 18:25Speaker 5: as tight as they can until the new CBA gets in,
- 18:28Speaker 5: and then we're gonna have all new inflex of TV
- 18:31Speaker 5: deals because we've already seen the writing on the wall.
- 18:33Speaker 4: This is happening. So and the owners know this.
- 18:37Speaker 5: So every owner that's not spending any money right now
- 18:40Speaker 5: knows what's coming and they know when they're gonna spend it.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And so some.
- 18:44Speaker 5: People will call that collusion or you know, but you know,
- 18:47Speaker 5: some people might not. You know, especially if you're on
- 18:49Speaker 5: a team, you're not gonna call that collusion. You're just like,
- 18:51Speaker 5: it's just a business. But that's where we're at right
- 18:54Speaker 5: now teams that are there's certain teams that are going
- 18:56Speaker 5: for it because they don't care, and there's certain teams
- 18:58Speaker 5: are like, all right, well I'm gonna wait to the
- 18:59Speaker 5: new TV money comes in. So I'm always even and
- 19:03Speaker 5: rich people aren't rich because they give it away either.
- 19:05Speaker 4: I'm just throwing that out there.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I would say we all agree that the most important
- 19:11Speaker 1: thing with a television contract is that you have consistent,
- 19:14Speaker 1: high level sideline reporting. But aside from that, Kyle, just
- 19:19Speaker 1: your sense of where this is because it's like uncharted territory,
- 19:23Speaker 1: not only for the sports industry, for the teams involved with,
- 19:26Speaker 1: you know, getting their games televised. We haven't seen anything
- 19:31Speaker 1: like the uncertainty we're seeing right now with a lot
- 19:34Speaker 1: of teams.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think Lance brings up a really
- 19:40Speaker 2: interesting point. You know, we hear for the last two
- 19:43Speaker 2: years how the game is just getting stronger and stronger
- 19:48Speaker 2: and there's never been more fans in the seats, which
- 19:51Speaker 2: is true, there's never been more fans watching on TV
- 19:54Speaker 2: eyes with the WBC, Baseball in and of itself is
- 19:58Speaker 2: in a very healthy state. So it's quite interesting that
- 20:02Speaker 2: we can't find TV networks that will pay to show
- 20:06Speaker 2: certain teams games. I'm not a conspiracy theorist per se,
- 20:13Speaker 2: but I do remember what happened around in the last
- 20:16Speaker 2: CBA when the song and dance was, Man, we're losing money.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Baseball's really on the downward. We're going to have to
- 20:23Speaker 2: make some adjustments here. Players are going to have to
- 20:25Speaker 2: have their part in this. And then before you know what,
- 20:28Speaker 2: baseball took off on a four year trajectory here over
- 20:31Speaker 2: the last four seasons that has just grown exponentially. And
- 20:35Speaker 2: I think this is part of what this setup is
- 20:37Speaker 2: going to be. I've heard the story in the locker
- 20:40Speaker 2: room when Rob Manford goes into the locker room next
- 20:43Speaker 2: year and then starts talking about how MLB has had
- 20:46Speaker 2: to absorb these TV deals and MLB has had to
- 20:49Speaker 2: take over them, and it's really going to put a
- 20:51Speaker 2: strain on it. Sorry, that's no, that's not it. They
- 20:56Speaker 2: announced Apple deals and what Peacock deals or whatever it
- 21:00Speaker 2: was two months after the CBA in twenty twenty two
- 21:04Speaker 2: or twenty two three or whatever, what's twenty two two,
- 21:06Speaker 2: Like that's in the works. Just like Lance said, these
- 21:10Speaker 2: networks will take over these deals as soon as they
- 21:12Speaker 2: know Baseball is being played. If anything, I think this
- 21:15Speaker 2: tells the players, this is how important this is to
- 21:18Speaker 2: the owners. If they're going to have this song and dance,
- 21:21Speaker 2: they need baseball to get TV contracts, So hold them
- 21:25Speaker 2: to playing baseball. But I also agree with these two
- 21:28Speaker 2: guys where I would love to see a team that's
- 21:31Speaker 2: had negative cash flow over the last five years, show
- 21:34Speaker 2: me that team, because the graphics that I've seen is
- 21:38Speaker 2: most of these teams are in the hundreds of millions
- 21:40Speaker 2: of dollars in revenue, whether they have a high pay
- 21:42Speaker 2: roll or not. The TV and the fans that do
- 21:45Speaker 2: show up bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to
- 21:47Speaker 2: these teams, and I think you just see the difference
- 21:50Speaker 2: in the teams that want to put it back on
- 21:51Speaker 2: the field versus the teams that don't. And the ones
- 21:54Speaker 2: that put it back on the field are normally the
- 21:56Speaker 2: ones that win.
- 21:58Speaker 1: The Commissioner, in a recent interview, also floated some ideas
- 22:03Speaker 1: about how to spruce up the game of baseball. We'll
- 22:06Speaker 1: get to that when we come back from break. You're
- 22:08Speaker 1: watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.

- 23:16Speaker 1: That looks like that would be Matt Holliday approved Healthy
- 23:20Speaker 1: and Fresh free knife. Geez, some sort I don't know.
- 23:26Speaker 1: So the commissioner was on a network and he was
- 23:30Speaker 1: being interviewed, and one of the things he floated, I
- 23:33Speaker 1: just want to get your reaction to it that they
- 23:37Speaker 1: were toying with the idea nothing final, with the idea
- 23:40Speaker 1: of baseball having an in season tournament. Now, I was
- 23:44Speaker 1: a baseball purist. I didn't want the DH in the
- 23:47Speaker 1: National League. I didn't like the playoff format. Change it
- 23:50Speaker 1: turns out I like those things, so maybe change can
- 23:54Speaker 1: be good. But I'll go with you, Matt. Just give
- 23:56Speaker 1: me your thoughts on baseball and in order to spark
- 24:00Speaker 1: more interest in in season tournament.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I mean, I think as an NBA fan, I found
- 24:08Speaker 3: it somewhat interesting. I don't I don't think it's like
- 24:12Speaker 3: a deal breaker. I don't think it's a it's it's
- 24:14Speaker 3: something that's Uh. The NBA has gained a ton of
- 24:19Speaker 3: notoriety or added extra fans because of the in game tournament.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I think it's interesting that the players, uh, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 3: they get a bonus if they win. I think that.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I don't hate it.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I mean, look, I don't I don't know what the
- 24:36Speaker 3: format will look like. I'd be interested to see how.
- 24:40Speaker 4: They do it.
- 24:41Speaker 3: In in like kind of the way the NBA did it,
- 24:44Speaker 3: like as far as our scheduling is a lot different
- 24:46Speaker 3: because we have more games and serieses and where this
- 24:49Speaker 3: would all be how they would do it. But I'm
- 24:53Speaker 3: always interested in new ideas that make regular season games
- 24:57Speaker 3: feel more h important, or there's more on the line,
- 25:02Speaker 3: or there's bonuses for young players. You know, young players
- 25:08Speaker 3: get a chance to make an extra million dollars and
- 25:10Speaker 3: if they win the end season tournament or you know,
- 25:13Speaker 3: whatever the bonus ends up being. But I'm all ears
- 25:17Speaker 3: for stuff that might improve the game watch or make
- 25:22Speaker 3: games in the middle of the season maybe more fun
- 25:26Speaker 3: to watch, or bring in maybe some casual fans that
- 25:28Speaker 3: otherwise don't watch July games or June games, and now
- 25:33Speaker 3: all of a sudden, you know that their team has
- 25:35Speaker 3: a chance to win sort of a consolation championship or whatever.
- 25:39Speaker 3: I don't even know, you know, a mid season tournament championship.
- 25:44Speaker 3: I don't hate it, so I'd be interested to hear
- 25:48Speaker 3: in some of the logistics of it.
- 25:52Speaker 1: All Right, I watched the Knicks beat the Spurs for
- 25:56Speaker 1: the NBA Emirates Cup. It wasn't even a game that
- 25:59Speaker 1: counted regular season standings as a fan. I was just
- 26:03Speaker 1: watching it as a game because I like to watch
- 26:05Speaker 1: the next lance would that scenario you think play in MLB?
- 26:10Speaker 5: It's it's gonna be hard because you gotta do series,
- 26:13Speaker 5: I think for baseball to feel like you're doing that,
- 26:17Speaker 5: So a lot of stuff's gotta change. You know, you
- 26:19Speaker 5: gotta add to two more teams, so there's sixteen on
- 26:22Speaker 5: each side, and then you do three game series kind
- 26:24Speaker 5: of heading on into the All Star break. Maybe you
- 26:26Speaker 5: think the All Star break a little longer for certain things.
- 26:30Speaker 5: So I think and the idea of bringing some sort
- 26:34Speaker 5: of sense of different types of games that matter would
- 26:38Speaker 5: be cool. But the logistics of baseball, with baseball needing
- 26:42Speaker 5: to be a three game series for you to win
- 26:45Speaker 5: that series and move on instead of a one game off.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I mean, maybe you do make it a one game
- 26:48Speaker 4: off and you just have a.
- 26:50Speaker 5: Bracket on each side of one games, but like the
- 26:52Speaker 5: travel and our season would be outrageous for that, So
- 26:57Speaker 5: I don't see how I don't see how it's doable,
- 27:01Speaker 5: to be honest with you, in baseball with the way
- 27:04Speaker 5: that you'd have to travel unless you send every team
- 27:08Speaker 5: on East and West to a one site and have
- 27:12Speaker 5: a one game off until who it's ever's left plays
- 27:17Speaker 5: the other side. Maybe that's the only way to do
- 27:19Speaker 5: it with because of travel, I don't know. I mean,
- 27:22Speaker 5: with what the travel guys and people have to deal
- 27:25Speaker 5: with throughout the year. To throw that in especially, you know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: you have to play every day and stuff like that,
- 27:31Speaker 5: it's it's gonna be tough to make something like that work.
- 27:35Speaker 4: How about Tuca.
- 27:38Speaker 2: On the plants there and Matt. I think it'd be
- 27:41Speaker 2: interesting and be you know, kind of cool, But I
- 27:44Speaker 2: just don't know how it works. I mean, you need
- 27:47Speaker 2: you need time to make that happen. I don't think
- 27:51Speaker 2: it is really right to just work it into the
- 27:54Speaker 2: regular season because, in my mind, the most important position
- 28:00Speaker 2: on the field only plays one out of five days.
- 28:03Speaker 2: And I think it becomes a big advantage if the
- 28:06Speaker 2: Pirates get to play their tournament day when Paul Skeins pitches,
- 28:11Speaker 2: versus the Cardinals playing their tournament game with Kyle Gibson pitches.
- 28:14Speaker 2: You know, I think it's it's just a different type
- 28:16Speaker 2: of a deal. So I think we have our tournament,
- 28:22Speaker 2: and I think baseball being the worldly game, I think
- 28:25Speaker 2: you move the WBC to the middle of the season,
- 28:29Speaker 2: and how long how much of spring training does it
- 28:32Speaker 2: take to play the WBC. You know, I think you
- 28:35Speaker 2: move it to the middle of the season, and you
- 28:38Speaker 2: make All Star Break a week long whatever it needs
- 28:41Speaker 2: to be, and you play in the middle of the
- 28:43Speaker 2: season when all the players are ready, they're possibly with
- 28:45Speaker 2: their peak physical shape. Nobody's starting in January to be
- 28:48Speaker 2: built up. Starters aren't going three innings in a WBC game,
- 28:53Speaker 2: And you make the focus on the WBC. You want
- 28:56Speaker 2: to grow that, you want that to be the big deal.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Put that in the middle of the season and let
- 29:01Speaker 2: the people go play, and then you don't have this
- 29:04Speaker 2: weird time where maybe if you're not in that end
- 29:06Speaker 2: season tournament, you're not playing because you can't just take
- 29:09Speaker 2: two weeks off right of baseball. It's just it's not
- 29:11Speaker 2: how it works. So, you know, that's probably what I
- 29:15Speaker 2: would do.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Before we go, Matt, you're a coach on Team USA.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I'm just curious that this point in the in the year,
- 29:24Speaker 1: how much time does that take up as you guys
- 29:27Speaker 1: prep for that. How busy are you with with you know,
- 29:30Speaker 1: helping that come together?
- 29:33Speaker 3: Uh, you know, in my position, Uh, not much. I
- 29:37Speaker 3: mean it's a it's a zoom call once a week maybe.
- 29:42Speaker 4: There.
- 29:43Speaker 3: You know, obviously a lot of it comes down to
- 29:45Speaker 3: the Michael Hill, the general manager in d Row, finding
- 29:49Speaker 3: the players they're capable of, willing, uh teams allowing. Putting
- 29:55Speaker 3: together the roster has been the main, you know, the
- 29:58Speaker 3: main thing. So I think as we get closer, there's
- 30:03Speaker 3: there's maybe some more stuff involved, but I don't have
- 30:06Speaker 3: any say on on who plays or you know, that's
- 30:09Speaker 3: it's it's this is you know, at least in my opinion,
- 30:11Speaker 3: this is more of a Michael Hill and d Row
- 30:15Speaker 3: doing a lot of the leg work on getting the
- 30:17Speaker 3: roster together. And then once you finalize the roster, you
- 30:22Speaker 3: start to put together roles, you start to plan out pitching.
- 30:26Speaker 3: You know, a lot of these pitchers, like Schooble, they
- 30:28Speaker 3: have strict guidelines on what they're willing to do and
- 30:31Speaker 3: what they're agents and coaches and you know what game
- 30:35Speaker 3: they're willing to pitch. And you know Skens has his
- 30:38Speaker 3: routine and what he wants and what games. So they
- 30:41Speaker 3: start trying to line up who pitches where, and then
- 30:45Speaker 3: talking about keeping an extra pitcher that that maybe is
- 30:48Speaker 3: even retired that may not pitch at all, but you
- 30:52Speaker 3: got to have him just in case. You know, you
- 30:54Speaker 3: have two guys that have bad outings. So there's it's
- 30:57Speaker 3: more logistical talk about the roster right now than it
- 31:01Speaker 3: is anything else. So I think once they finalize the
- 31:04Speaker 3: roster and hammer that out, I think it'll be interesting
- 31:08Speaker 3: to see where it turns to from there. But most
- 31:11Speaker 3: of the has been very light for me, just listening
- 31:14Speaker 3: in on guys that they're considering for the roster.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And it's been light for me this show because I
- 31:20Speaker 1: just fire some questions and then listen to you guys,
- 31:24Speaker 1: and you are all delightful and informative, and I appreciate it,
- 31:28Speaker 1: and that's gonna do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 31:32Speaker 1: We'll see on the next episode, and hopefully that one
- 31:34Speaker 1: won't suck.
