- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to Jack Jam.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'mkaannie Stephens, Brian Sexton, and John Oser are with me
- 0:18Speaker 2: today is the preseason is quickly wrapping up as we
- 0:21Speaker 2: get ready for the final preseason game of the year
- 0:23Speaker 2: on Friday against the Atlanta Falcons. So this week a
- 0:26Speaker 2: little bit like a game week as far as practice goes.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We'll start off with big thing Number one, which is
- 0:31Speaker 2: dynamic defense. Darnell Savage, who's been playing with a red
- 0:34Speaker 2: jersey on all of training camp, finally got that off
- 0:37Speaker 2: so was able to fully practice this week, and he
- 0:40Speaker 2: took talk to the media earlier this week a little
- 0:42Speaker 2: bit about what he sees from the defense.
- 0:45Speaker 3: And I feel like it's rare that you have a
- 0:47Speaker 3: defense that's dynamic because normally you think of offenses a
- 0:50Speaker 3: dynamic But I feel like the defense dynamic unless the
- 0:52Speaker 3: player maker gonna make plays. So I think it's perfect
- 0:55Speaker 3: fit for me.
- 0:57Speaker 2: John, We've talked a bunch about how the players have
- 0:59Speaker 2: been taken to Ryan Nielsen's defense. They a lot of
- 1:02Speaker 2: them feel like they can play like themselves, go out
- 1:04Speaker 2: and make plays. Is that something we'll hopefully see in the.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Preseason game this week.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I think a little bit.
- 1:09Speaker 5: I mean, you're gonna have the starters play in probably
- 1:13Speaker 5: for three series, so I expect to see it a
- 1:16Speaker 5: little bit. I don't put too much stock in what
- 1:18Speaker 5: we see in preseason after the starters go out in
- 1:21Speaker 5: terms of what we'll see from the Ryan Nielsen defense.
- 1:23Speaker 5: But I think so far, if you're doing a report
- 1:27Speaker 5: card in the defense, you're seeing him play faster, You're
- 1:29Speaker 5: seeing him play more aggressive.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It feels like they get it.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Brian, those are sort of the boxes you wanted to
- 1:35Speaker 5: check her in preseason until the regular season started.
- 1:38Speaker 6: John, I'm trying to think of a time where the
- 1:40Speaker 6: Jaguars have added a coordinator on either side of the
- 1:42Speaker 6: ball where there has been great anticipation of what would happen,
- 1:46Speaker 6: and it would happen so quickly. I mean, it's almost
- 1:48Speaker 6: as if the minute he showed up here everything changed.
- 1:51Speaker 6: So it's interesting to watch everybody on this defense figure
- 1:55Speaker 6: out their role, whether it's Chad Muma, who's had a
- 1:57Speaker 6: really good preseason stepping into that strong side. We'll get
- 2:00Speaker 6: a chance to look at Darnelle Savage for the first time,
- 2:02Speaker 6: and the word on him is he is made to
- 2:04Speaker 6: play nickel in this defense because he's a guy who
- 2:07Speaker 6: can play man in the middle or he can play
- 2:09Speaker 6: in his zone package. He is a very versatile interior
- 2:13Speaker 6: defensive back who we haven't seen except in a very limited.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Fashion so far. Our second big thing today is going
- 2:20Speaker 4: to be moving up.
- 2:21Speaker 2: We've talked a lot too about some of the second
- 2:23Speaker 2: year players Parker Washington, Tank Figsty, but we've seen some
- 2:26Speaker 2: of the rookies really showing out, and one of them
- 2:28Speaker 2: in particular, Mason Smith, that second round pick, and he
- 2:31Speaker 2: talked a little bit about what he's been.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Learning and training him.
- 2:35Speaker 7: Consistency, you know, coming into.
- 2:38Speaker 5: The next level.
- 2:39Speaker 7: You know, that's something that I really wanted to focus on,
- 2:41Speaker 7: you know, just not being up and down and you know,
- 2:44Speaker 7: not having a great game and then coming back in
- 2:45Speaker 7: and having a great game. So it's just, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 7: more about being more consistent. And I think that still
- 2:51Speaker 7: applies to this day, like you know, just being able
- 2:54Speaker 7: to stay at a high playing at a high level
- 2:56Speaker 7: each and every game, each and ever practice. You know,
- 2:58Speaker 7: you got to bring it every day in the league.
- 3:00Speaker 7: Who is being able to do that and continue to
- 3:02Speaker 7: grow in that espit.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Brian, He's working on that consistency. If we get to
- 3:07Speaker 2: see the high end of Mason Smith every day. That
- 3:09Speaker 2: pick's going to be.
- 3:10Speaker 4: A home run.
- 3:10Speaker 6: You know, I've said it before, but when they drafted
- 3:12Speaker 6: him in the second round, it reminded me instantly of
- 3:16Speaker 6: Chris Jones, who slid into the second round back in
- 3:19Speaker 6: twenty sixteen, of Jeffrey Simmons, who slid a few years
- 3:23Speaker 6: ago down into the bottom of the first round, both
- 3:26Speaker 6: of whom had the same pedigree, both of whom had
- 3:29Speaker 6: the same size, speed, both of whom were disruptive playmakers
- 3:33Speaker 6: in college. It's high praise and it's not yet earned.
- 3:36Speaker 6: But when you start to see how big he is,
- 3:39Speaker 6: how long he is, how impressive he is in terms
- 3:41Speaker 6: of his work ethic, and the fact that at times
- 3:44Speaker 6: he's been unblockable on the practice field out there, you
- 3:47Speaker 6: could see where this could be the lightning and a
- 3:49Speaker 6: bottle home run kind of draft pick. But the Jaguars
- 3:52Speaker 6: have long looked for in the middle of their defensive line.
- 3:54Speaker 5: John Yeah, I think fans still wonder about Mason Smith
- 3:57Speaker 5: because the sample size in preseason games has been limited,
- 4:01Speaker 5: so it can be tough for a defensive interior guy
- 4:04Speaker 5: to make that huge impact play when there's a small
- 4:06Speaker 5: number of plays, But as Brian said, there have been
- 4:09Speaker 5: times during practice where he's starting to come on. He's
- 4:12Speaker 5: starting to do things that make you think, Okay. Over
- 4:15Speaker 5: the course of a season, we're gonna see that as
- 4:18Speaker 5: he gets more comfortable, as he as he starts to
- 4:20Speaker 5: learn his surroundings, as he learns about matchups. Really, the
- 4:25Speaker 5: two top two draft picks sort of have followed the
- 4:28Speaker 5: same line during training camp practices, Brian Thomas Junior and
- 4:31Speaker 5: Mason Smith.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Feels like they're starting to get it again.
- 4:35Speaker 5: I I usually expect little from rookies. I think these
- 4:38Speaker 5: guys are gonna contribute.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Our final big thing today is gonna be open spots.
- 4:43Speaker 1: So we know that T. D.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Bethard left preseason game number two with a goin injury.
- 4:46Speaker 2: He's been ruled out for this week. Reports are that
- 4:48Speaker 2: e J. Perry, who's been a backup in the system,
- 4:50Speaker 2: will be back in the building as well. Now, John,
- 4:54Speaker 2: does that automatically open up a roster spot there if
- 4:57Speaker 2: they were to carry three quarterbacks? What do we kind
- 4:59Speaker 2: of looking at that long term with the quarterbacks A.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Tu Well, it feels and it is your speculation.
- 5:04Speaker 2: E J.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Perry did sign it?
- 5:05Speaker 5: This guy to email on my trusty iPhone, it feels
- 5:10Speaker 5: Brian like it may be CJ. Bether to either go
- 5:14Speaker 5: into injured reserve to start the season, because you can
- 5:17Speaker 5: get two guys through that this year, you don't have
- 5:19Speaker 5: to end their season by putting them on IR. Four
- 5:21Speaker 5: to fifty three comes out, So maybe Trevor Lawrence mac
- 5:25Speaker 5: Jones backup, put CJ on injured reserve if you want
- 5:29Speaker 5: to take that route with EJ. Perry as your practice
- 5:32Speaker 5: squad short term emergency, that's one scenario. I don't know
- 5:35Speaker 5: if that's the path they're going to take.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Well, obviously it depends on how things shake out on
- 5:40Speaker 6: Friday night, if there are any other injuries to players
- 5:43Speaker 6: that you really need to get through as opposed to
- 5:45Speaker 6: a guy like CJ that you're thinking is your practice
- 5:48Speaker 6: squad third quarterback. Maybe that isn't available to them, but
- 5:51Speaker 6: I get what you're saying. You need to have a
- 5:53Speaker 6: guy who can operate the practice squad, the scout team,
- 5:57Speaker 6: and that looks like it could be EJ. Perry because
- 6:00Speaker 6: for an older guy like c J. Bethard, groin can
- 6:03Speaker 6: be something that takes a little while to get through it.
- 6:05Speaker 6: This could force the Jaguars hands at the quarterback position.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Stay with us here on JAGSAM.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Coming up after the break, we're gonna hear from Defectsive
- 6:13Speaker 2: coordinator Ryan Nielsen and what he had to say about
- 6:15Speaker 2: what he's seen from his players during training camp.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Sea Fields First.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Jackson Neale's premier luxury auto group go to Fieldsauto dot com.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Welcome back into jag ZM.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We heard from the kinds of coordinator Ryan Neilson yesterday
- 6:36Speaker 2: and he has a.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Lot to say.
- 6:37Speaker 2: He's definitely a quotable guy when talking about trying to
- 6:41Speaker 2: whittle down this roster and what he's looking for and
- 6:43Speaker 2: implementing this new scheme.
- 6:44Speaker 4: He talked about how the players are taking to.
- 6:46Speaker 8: It, the knowledge of the scheme, feel like they're they're
- 6:52Speaker 8: doing a great job. The players, uh are coaching staff.
- 6:55Speaker 8: You know that that combination of those guys were working
- 6:57Speaker 8: in the meetings, things like that, picking things up walk
- 7:00Speaker 8: through was awesome. Today. You know, those guys are on
- 7:02Speaker 8: top of it, really locked in, fired up about the
- 7:06Speaker 8: direction that it's gone in terms of the whole combination
- 7:09Speaker 8: of everything. But yeah, we're gonna keep pushing every day, keep.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Pushing them every day. But they have to make those
- 7:15Speaker 4: roster decisions soon.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah, they do.
- 7:18Speaker 6: I kind of mentioned it in the first block with John.
- 7:21Speaker 6: I'm struggling to remember a defensive coordinator or a coordinator
- 7:25Speaker 6: on either side of the ball that's come in with
- 7:27Speaker 6: high expectations that has delivered such immediate results their training
- 7:33Speaker 6: camp preseason. So we got to get to the regular
- 7:34Speaker 6: season to see it. But I talked to Corey Robbinson
- 7:36Speaker 6: yesterday who coaches the cornerbacks, and Chad Mumo yesterday and
- 7:41Speaker 6: the way that they communicated what this defense is, how
- 7:44Speaker 6: they're working through it with Ryan Nielson, their enthusiasm for
- 7:48Speaker 6: what's possible. John, I don't think it's ever happened here
- 7:52Speaker 6: in Jacksonville that the expectation has been this high and
- 7:55Speaker 6: the delivery has been so quick.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Yeah, we'll see. I mean, I'm not going to sit
- 7:59Speaker 5: on a show and say it's delivered. When they have
- 8:01Speaker 5: Miami sitting there week one, then we'll see if it's delivered.
- 8:04Speaker 5: But everything you're talking about is real, the communication, how
- 8:08Speaker 5: it feels, how these players feel confident in what they're doing.
- 8:13Speaker 5: That's the first step. I think they have the right
- 8:15Speaker 5: personnel in place. I think they know the defense. I
- 8:18Speaker 5: think it fits I guess we'll seeing them up.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Shell talked a bunch of men about Mason Smith, Jordan Jefferson.
- 8:25Speaker 4: We've seen flashes from now that he's healthy and.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Back out there.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Nielson also talked about that interior defensive line in the
- 8:31Speaker 2: depth that they have.
- 8:33Speaker 8: Guys have done a really good job, Jeremy Garrett. He's
- 8:38Speaker 8: done an excellent job with those guys fundamentals, technique wise,
- 8:42Speaker 8: getting them to play really hard, you know. So, Yeah,
- 8:46Speaker 8: it's gonna be a tough, tough decision. Excited about all
- 8:49Speaker 8: the guys at that position, really, and we've rolled three
- 8:54Speaker 8: four guys with the noose and tackle position in all
- 8:56Speaker 8: these games, so it's been it's been pretty good. So
- 8:58Speaker 8: we'll see. We'll see what it when it comes down
- 9:01Speaker 8: to the that time and have really right now having
- 9:04Speaker 8: no idea.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I mean, that might be some of the more difficult
- 9:09Speaker 2: roster decisions.
- 9:10Speaker 4: John.
- 9:10Speaker 2: We saw a heavy rotation there, but even you know,
- 9:13Speaker 2: players that we've seen a lot of, Roy Robertson Harris
- 9:15Speaker 2: was playing deep into Yeah, that first game played a
- 9:17Speaker 2: good chunk of the second game as well. So people
- 9:19Speaker 2: aren't secure at a spot necessarily.
- 9:21Speaker 5: No, I don't think there's secure and there's been a
- 9:23Speaker 5: lot made of the Roy situation. It it it feels
- 9:26Speaker 5: like what they're saying is right, meaning uh, Roy didn't
- 9:30Speaker 5: play much to a no tas if at all with
- 9:32Speaker 5: an injury, so they're trying to get him reps, trying
- 9:34Speaker 5: to get him up to speed. I there's always talk
- 9:38Speaker 5: among fans about what they don't do in the offseason.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Well, they didn't add enough here or there to do what
- 9:43Speaker 1: they did do.
- 9:44Speaker 5: They went hard at making this a stouter defensive front.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Jordan Jefferson, Mason Smith, Eric Armstead, uh adding to what
- 9:52Speaker 5: was already Devon Hamilton, Josh Heinz Allen and Trayvon Walker.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Uh Brian I just listed off seven or eight guys
- 9:59Speaker 5: who you feel like you don't have to get.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Exotic to stop the run around here.
- 10:06Speaker 5: That's important because if you can stop the run just
- 10:08Speaker 5: doing your basic things, freeze everything up.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I know that's what they wanted to do. It sure
- 10:13Speaker 1: feels like they're stouter than they were in the last
- 10:16Speaker 1: six games last year.
- 10:17Speaker 6: You know, I don't see Roy Robertson Harrison not being
- 10:19Speaker 6: here right. I think he is here, and I think
- 10:21Speaker 6: if you start thinking about roster spots that might cost
- 10:25Speaker 6: a sixth linebacker, or a fourth running back or a
- 10:29Speaker 6: fifth safety, you know, someone else somewhere else that the
- 10:32Speaker 6: coaching staff wanted to carry. But they were so what's
- 10:36Speaker 6: the right word, ineffective? Poor, bad against the run at
- 10:39Speaker 6: the end of the year last year, in that game
- 10:42Speaker 6: that could have decided the playoffs. I don't think you
- 10:44Speaker 6: can let a big guy like ro Robertson Harris get
- 10:46Speaker 6: away from you. No, Mason Smith is going to be
- 10:49Speaker 6: really good, and Jordan Jefferson shows signs of being a
- 10:52Speaker 6: really good young football player as well. You want them
- 10:55Speaker 6: on your roster, you want them contributing, but you also
- 10:58Speaker 6: need Roy roberts and Harris.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I think, yeah, they're not there quite yet. Some of
- 11:01Speaker 4: those young guys.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Also, Nielsen talked a little bit about We talked this
- 11:04Speaker 2: week was more like a practice week as you would
- 11:06Speaker 2: see in the regular season, as they work on game
- 11:08Speaker 2: planning specifically for the Falcons, but also maintaining their identity.
- 11:13Speaker 8: You don't want to lose the focus that it's about us,
- 11:16Speaker 8: it's about Jacksonville.
- 11:17Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:18Speaker 8: What you do want to focus on is kind of
- 11:20Speaker 8: what it looks like. This is what a reach block
- 11:23Speaker 8: looks like. This is what you know, a fade route
- 11:26Speaker 8: looks like, or a particular route of particular run play
- 11:30Speaker 8: with you know, but when you look at the league,
- 11:32Speaker 8: it's it's a lot of the offenses are very similar rights,
- 11:36Speaker 8: and so what we want to do is we want
- 11:38Speaker 8: to show them, show our players, you know, here's here's
- 11:40Speaker 8: what you're going to what it's going to look like.
- 11:43Speaker 8: But hey, let's really focus on our alignments, our assignments,
- 11:45Speaker 8: and our fundamentals and how we have success versus these plays.
- 11:49Speaker 8: So yeah, so we're game planning a little bit in
- 11:52Speaker 8: terms of, you know, kind of who they are, what
- 11:55Speaker 8: they do, but we always and this will go through
- 11:58Speaker 8: then it's always a focus on us and what we do,
- 12:01Speaker 8: how we think, how we.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Act, how we play.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I always want to play the best style for yourself,
- 12:06Speaker 2: but it is important to game plan for your opponent.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Nielsen talking a little bit there, Brian, what do you
- 12:10Speaker 2: learn from your team when you finally start game planning
- 12:13Speaker 2: and going over these schemes, It gets a little more
- 12:15Speaker 2: complicated than just going out there and doing what you
- 12:18Speaker 2: know playing football.
- 12:18Speaker 6: Yeah, you want to see them carry it over right
- 12:20Speaker 6: from the meeting room to the practice field to the
- 12:23Speaker 6: game field to execute the specific assignments that they're given.
- 12:26Speaker 6: The hard part about this week, guys that we know
- 12:29Speaker 6: that the Falcons are not going to play many of
- 12:32Speaker 6: their frontline guys, and so some of the game planning
- 12:35Speaker 6: elements that they work on on the field aren't going
- 12:37Speaker 6: to be quite as impactful as if you're trying to
- 12:39Speaker 6: stop Jon Robinson right, or Kyle Pitts or Drake London,
- 12:43Speaker 6: you know, those great players. However, it does give you
- 12:46Speaker 6: an opportunity to be able to take the young players
- 12:49Speaker 6: through the process of what a game plan week looks like,
- 12:52Speaker 6: what a normal regular season week of preparation looks like,
- 12:57Speaker 6: and then execute on Friday night no matter who you're planning.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Again, yeah, it's become interesting during preseason since they went
- 13:03Speaker 5: to three. There used to be sort of a best
- 13:05Speaker 5: practices in the NFL that nobody would.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Play anybody week one, et cetera.
- 13:11Speaker 5: You get to week three, you'd play starters through a
- 13:13Speaker 5: half in game plan, and now everybody's sort of approaching
- 13:16Speaker 5: it differently. So I think what Ryan Nielsen talked about
- 13:19Speaker 5: is what you have to do week three. These days,
- 13:22Speaker 5: you want a game plan, you want to do your routine.
- 13:25Speaker 5: They call it a dress rehearsal. Make this week for
- 13:27Speaker 5: players as much like a game week as possible, so
- 13:31Speaker 5: that the rookies know where the bathrooms are, you know.
- 13:35Speaker 5: And so once you establish that, then I think these days,
- 13:39Speaker 5: whereas maybe four or five years ago you would game
- 13:42Speaker 5: plan a little hard for this, I think now you
- 13:44Speaker 5: game plan because you want the rookies and young players
- 13:49Speaker 5: to know what it's like to game plan to go
- 13:51Speaker 5: through that routine. I don't think you were as worried
- 13:55Speaker 5: about like how it looks on Friday, because I don't
- 14:00Speaker 5: think you say I know who you're playing anymore. So
- 14:03Speaker 5: it's very important for the rehearsal and the routine, but
- 14:07Speaker 5: they still want to work on themselves because there's still
- 14:10Speaker 5: little practice time.
- 14:11Speaker 6: He says, listen, and I get that. I would wonder though,
- 14:13Speaker 6: if it doesn't change Doug Peterson's approach to some of
- 14:15Speaker 6: his starters to be in there playing against guys who
- 14:19Speaker 6: are likely going to be looking for, you know, practice
- 14:22Speaker 6: squad spot somewhere else or a job right because they're
- 14:25Speaker 6: at the bottom end of the roster and they're going
- 14:27Speaker 6: to be out of football.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Hotly finding a job. It'll be at Macism wherever it is.
- 14:32Speaker 1: You get my point?
- 14:34Speaker 6: Do I really want my frontline guys out there playing
- 14:36Speaker 6: against guys who are desperate to make a play so
- 14:38Speaker 6: they might hang on there? If I'm Doug Peterson, I'm like, yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 6: let's get a series or two. And I think Doug
- 14:42Speaker 6: did kind of allude to this on Monday when he
- 14:45Speaker 6: said we'll see how it goes. Right. At some point
- 14:47Speaker 6: you're like, yeah, let's not risk that. So you almost
- 14:50Speaker 6: want to get the coaches together and go, hey, look
- 14:52Speaker 6: in that third preseason game, right, can we agree we're
- 14:55Speaker 6: going to play some guys right? Or when don't play anybody?
- 14:58Speaker 6: Which sounds like collusion, but the reality of it is
- 15:01Speaker 6: is that you would like to not risk starting football
- 15:05Speaker 6: players against guys who are going to make desperation moves.
- 15:09Speaker 2: We'll talk a little bit more about that after the
- 15:11Speaker 2: break coming up. We're going to do with this or
- 15:13Speaker 2: that as we look ahead to the final preseason game.
- 15:21Speaker 2: For eleven years, Dringfinders Homes has been proud to call
- 15:24Speaker 2: themselves the official home builder of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit
- 15:27Speaker 2: dremfinders homes dot com for all the available inventory and
- 15:30Speaker 2: go Jags.
- 15:33Speaker 9: Third and final preseason game, we usually let the starters
- 15:36Speaker 9: play a little bit more, you know, And again it
- 15:39Speaker 9: depends on the circumstance and the way the game goes,
- 15:41Speaker 9: but you'd love to get maybe two quarters, you know,
- 15:44Speaker 9: out of them, you know. But we do take a
- 15:48Speaker 9: look at Atlanta a little bit and we simulate a
- 15:50Speaker 9: game week schedule wise, now that camp has broken, and
- 15:53Speaker 9: that's probably the only reason, you know, these weeks are
- 15:58Speaker 9: are important to get the guys, you know, no longer
- 16:01Speaker 9: in the hotel, they're living at home, transportation here, all
- 16:03Speaker 9: that kind of stuff. It just it simulates and sort
- 16:06Speaker 9: of feels like a game week.
- 16:08Speaker 1: This.
- 16:09Speaker 5: Oh, that's this or.
- 16:12Speaker 2: That's two very different philosophies. Let me do a little
- 16:18Speaker 2: this or that. Doug Peterson very much in the camp
- 16:21Speaker 2: of play your starters during the preseason. As we mentioned,
- 16:24Speaker 2: the Falcons are not going to be doing that whatsoever
- 16:27Speaker 2: in this game. I think the Bears have also come
- 16:30Speaker 2: out said they're not going to do it. Sean McVay
- 16:31Speaker 2: Verry notoriously doesn't like to do it with his players.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Where do you guys.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Land on this?
- 16:35Speaker 2: I think it depends a little bit about what kind
- 16:37Speaker 2: kind of team that you have. But are you rest
- 16:40Speaker 2: everybody so that don't get hurt, or you play them
- 16:42Speaker 2: because that's their jobs they should play.
- 16:43Speaker 6: I'm playing guys, and I'm trying to put them in
- 16:46Speaker 6: situations where they can get accustomed to the speed of
- 16:49Speaker 6: the game because you don't practice full speed like you
- 16:51Speaker 6: play and the physical side of it. I mean Aspaselli.
- 16:55Speaker 6: The next time you see him, he'll tell you. All
- 16:56Speaker 6: these guys will tell you that you have to get
- 16:58Speaker 6: ready for the physical side of the game. They don't
- 17:00Speaker 6: want you to kill them and make them play two
- 17:02Speaker 6: quarters of all three games, but they do need some
- 17:06Speaker 6: time on the field to get ready for the regular
- 17:08Speaker 6: season so that that caliber of play doesn't look like
- 17:11Speaker 6: preseason ball.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I think it's a little case by case.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Generally, with most teams, I would probably play them the
- 17:21Speaker 5: way Doug does, meaning I like how he does. Whenever
- 17:25Speaker 5: you're not doing a duel, go ahead and play him
- 17:28Speaker 5: for a couple of series the weeks to do a duel.
- 17:31Speaker 5: Really use that work. That makes sense in terms of
- 17:33Speaker 5: getting the right number of snaps. If I was a
- 17:36Speaker 5: coach and had a super high functioning side of the ball,
- 17:41Speaker 5: I probably would air on the way that the Chiefs
- 17:44Speaker 5: seem to be doing it, which is to not play
- 17:45Speaker 5: their guys all that much during the preseason. Beyond that,
- 17:51Speaker 5: I think the benefits of being ready, of having those.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Juices, all that stuff.
- 17:57Speaker 5: I think usually I would play guys about the way
- 18:00Speaker 5: Doug does it, because it's football.
- 18:03Speaker 1: You gotta be ready for it.
- 18:04Speaker 2: John, do you feel like because of the way they
- 18:06Speaker 2: practice now, with less pad of practice, that these games
- 18:09Speaker 2: become more important?
- 18:11Speaker 1: No, I mean.
- 18:14Speaker 5: I'm not gonna sit here and say preseason games are important.
- 18:16Speaker 5: I think they're uber important for evaluation. I think in
- 18:20Speaker 5: terms of prepping for the regular season. Realistically, we're in
- 18:24Speaker 5: a phase right now where you're always gonna see the
- 18:27Speaker 5: first three weeks of the regular season be some almost
- 18:30Speaker 5: shaking off the rust, cause it's just never gonna be
- 18:34Speaker 5: again where you feel like you can take six games
- 18:37Speaker 5: and hit and be ready.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I just never think we're going back to that.
- 18:41Speaker 5: So I always think tackling early in the season and
- 18:44Speaker 5: some functionality. I always think there's gonna be a little
- 18:47Speaker 5: bit of rust to knock off first two weeks.
- 18:49Speaker 6: I do think that the way that they practice has
- 18:52Speaker 6: a negative impact on the game in terms of the
- 18:55Speaker 6: physical side of it. They can't tackle no, right, I
- 18:59Speaker 6: mean you see that, see that. But so I do
- 19:01Speaker 6: think that that's why you've got to have these preseason
- 19:05Speaker 6: games and get time because otherwise the first month of
- 19:08Speaker 6: the season looks like the preseason, then the networks aren't
- 19:10Speaker 6: paying for the fans aren't paying for that. You have
- 19:12Speaker 6: a duty to get teams ready so that the regular
- 19:14Speaker 6: season looks like regular season football and not preseason. Hey, look,
- 19:18Speaker 6: this is a it's a tough, physical game. Guys get hurt.
- 19:21Speaker 6: You can't change that, right, I mean, look at how
- 19:23Speaker 6: safe they've made the helmet in the head, how they've
- 19:26Speaker 6: taken out of the game, and you still have guys
- 19:28Speaker 6: getting concussions. Anton Harrison suffered wanting practice out here. It
- 19:31Speaker 6: speaks to the nature of the game, which is as
- 19:33Speaker 6: hard as you work to be safe and secure in it,
- 19:36Speaker 6: it is not a safe and secure game. So I'm
- 19:38Speaker 6: going to air on the side be cautious with guys, right,
- 19:40Speaker 6: I'm going to know Christian Kirk has a calf. I'm
- 19:43Speaker 6: not gonna play them right, but I'm gonna get my
- 19:45Speaker 6: guys in there and get time from them because I
- 19:48Speaker 6: need them to be ready to go on Opening Day.
- 19:50Speaker 6: And I want my guys to be better than the
- 19:52Speaker 6: guys across from them on opening day. So I don't
- 19:54Speaker 6: care what the Rams do, I don't care what the
- 19:55Speaker 6: new age coach does. I'm going to take the old
- 19:58Speaker 6: school approach and I'm going to play some guys in August.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Brian's harden nose coach, Well, I just.
- 20:04Speaker 6: You know, I mean, listen, you can't get away from
- 20:06Speaker 6: the fact that football is a fit is a gladiator game.
- 20:09Speaker 6: You can't make it basketball on grass, and I think
- 20:12Speaker 6: we're kind of getting to that in August.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Let's move things along.
- 20:15Speaker 2: We're gonna talk a little bit about the offensive line
- 20:18Speaker 2: because co Football Focused with their rankings coming out says
- 20:21Speaker 2: one of the Jaguars is the best offensive lineman so
- 20:24Speaker 2: far in the preseason Offensive Player of the Week even
- 20:27Speaker 2: cole Van Landon, would.
- 20:28Speaker 4: You have guessed if I gave you five guesses who
- 20:30Speaker 4: was going to be?
- 20:31Speaker 1: No, probably not, and it look I'm sure cold played fine.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I don't know enough aspens the line played and know
- 20:39Speaker 1: whether you did or not.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Sometimes I don't know exactly how PFF grades on that front,
- 20:47Speaker 5: but the credit to them, Listen, they.
- 20:49Speaker 6: Have so many grades and I don't understand I get
- 20:51Speaker 6: it that there are people who played high end fantasy
- 20:55Speaker 6: football and probably some gambling, you know, methodology, and they're somewhere,
- 20:59Speaker 6: But they have so many grades and none.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Of them are relative to me.
- 21:02Speaker 6: I just I don't know what the grade needs.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Well, let's say Cole had a great game. I'm sure
- 21:07Speaker 4: you've played well.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna use that kind of move into our other
- 21:12Speaker 2: this or that, which is there's a couple examples, specifically
- 21:15Speaker 2: on the offensive and defensive line, where there's a veteran
- 21:18Speaker 2: that's been here and knows your system very well, but
- 21:20Speaker 2: there's also maybe a first second year player that has
- 21:24Speaker 2: a high ceiling but maybe hasn't gotten there just yet.
- 21:27Speaker 2: When you are where you are with the Jaguars, which
- 21:29Speaker 2: is when now, according to Shad Khan, do you err
- 21:32Speaker 2: on the side of, Hey, this person already knows their system,
- 21:35Speaker 2: but maybe they're not gonna get much better than they
- 21:36Speaker 2: already are. Or do you with a proven vet, or
- 21:38Speaker 2: do you kind of take that younger guy and hope
- 21:41Speaker 2: they come along this year or next year and get
- 21:43Speaker 2: you there.
- 21:44Speaker 6: I didn't catch the snarow off the top. Is the
- 21:46Speaker 6: guy that I'm thinking about moving on from a starter
- 21:48Speaker 6: or is he a backup?
- 21:50Speaker 1: Is he Orlando led Better right?
- 21:53Speaker 6: Or is he Roy Robertson Harris he is?
- 21:58Speaker 2: It could be either. It could be Jeremia led Better,
- 22:00Speaker 2: could be Roy Robertson Harris. I'm talking maybe a yeah, yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 2: maybe at cole Van Lannon. Who is you're looking at
- 22:06Speaker 2: maybe or behind Walker little like right there, filling in
- 22:09Speaker 2: if someone's hurt again, or are you working more with
- 22:12Speaker 2: Javon Foster hoping he gets there?
- 22:13Speaker 6: So I'm going more with Javon Foster, trying to develop him.
- 22:15Speaker 6: I'm going more with Jordan Jefferson and Mason Smith over
- 22:19Speaker 6: Jeremiah Ledbetter. Nothing against led Better. He's thirty one years old, right,
- 22:22Speaker 6: Van Land has been around here for a couple of years.
- 22:25Speaker 6: And I mean maybe the PFF grade says he's a star.
- 22:29Speaker 6: I haven't seen it, right, He's not in danger of
- 22:31Speaker 6: cracking my starting lineup. To me, he's a cusp guy.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Right, I'm moving on.
- 22:35Speaker 6: I'm going with youth because it's a young man's game.
- 22:38Speaker 5: I think what you do here is you get you
- 22:43Speaker 5: essentially usually carry about eight or nine offensive line. Say
- 22:48Speaker 5: you carry nine, you know you're starting five. You have
- 22:54Speaker 5: two developmental guys in Javon Foster and in Cooper Hodges,
- 22:58Speaker 5: they were young guys.
- 23:00Speaker 1: And then you want to make sure you have two swing.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Guys in Walker Little and maybe Shatland I'm not hopefully
- 23:09Speaker 5: from In some cases your young developmental guy can be
- 23:13Speaker 5: your swing guy as well. And then what you want
- 23:16Speaker 5: is maybe where Cole fits Cole, Van Lanen, Tyler, Shatley,
- 23:23Speaker 5: Williams Derrel. Well, you know you want four or five
- 23:26Speaker 5: guys who you can move to the practice squad. Feel
- 23:31Speaker 5: good about the totality of that. If you lose one, okay,
- 23:35Speaker 5: well good luck to you. But so that you have
- 23:40Speaker 5: some guys you can rotate in that are sort of interchangeable.
- 23:47Speaker 5: So I think that's what you try to do. I
- 23:49Speaker 5: try to avoid the question, but I think that's the
- 23:51Speaker 5: approach you try to take in this day and age,
- 23:54Speaker 5: where you can.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Act like the practice squad is a little more part
- 23:56Speaker 1: of your roster.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Shotley's a culture guy. I'm keeping Shotley because he is well.
- 24:02Speaker 6: First of all, he's one of the quarterbacks guys, right,
- 24:04Speaker 6: and it always helps to have them. Plus it's just
- 24:06Speaker 6: a great guy to have in the locker room. But
- 24:09Speaker 6: I need young and promising as opposed to, Hey, maybe
- 24:12Speaker 6: this guy can play if we need him.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Where all the puzzle pieces come together, as the roster
- 24:16Speaker 2: comes together. We'll talk a little bit more about it
- 24:18Speaker 2: tomorrow as we get closer to that deadline. But a
- 24:20Speaker 2: lot of different things in play, for sure, say with
- 24:23Speaker 2: us here on Jagzam.
- 24:24Speaker 4: We'll be right back preview the.
- 24:25Speaker 6: Rest of the week.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Jags fans, if you want customized Jaguars furniture for your home,
- 24:37Speaker 2: check out zipchare dot com to browse all the customizable options.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Zipchair is furniture for fans. Welcome back to jag Zam.
- 24:46Speaker 2: We're wrapping things up as we get ready for preseason.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Game number three will be in Atlanta on Friday.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I have all access tonight, that is back.
- 24:54Speaker 2: We'll be at String Sports Brewery tonight, right down the
- 24:57Speaker 2: street from John.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Maybe he'll wander down if I can them into it.
- 25:00Speaker 1: No, maybe we'll see are you buying day?
- 25:04Speaker 4: Maybe Longman, Well, he's a very generous guy.
- 25:07Speaker 2: What are you guys looking forward to? Obviously we'll see
- 25:09Speaker 2: the starters a little bit. I'm just hoping maybe the
- 25:12Speaker 2: offense gets you know, a good solid scoring driver two
- 25:16Speaker 2: and then get them out of there.
- 25:17Speaker 4: What are you guys hoping to see?
- 25:18Speaker 6: I want to see the defense continue to elevate, right,
- 25:21Speaker 6: to continue to play fast and make plays. I mean,
- 25:24Speaker 6: last week we saw all the twos and threes and
- 25:27Speaker 6: they looked good. They looked fluid in a defense that's
- 25:30Speaker 6: new to them. I'd like to see some of the
- 25:32Speaker 6: starters again get out of the game healthy, but for
- 25:36Speaker 6: the time that they're in there, continue to keep the
- 25:38Speaker 6: level of it up.
- 25:40Speaker 5: And maybe watch those top three rookies Thomas Jerry and
- 25:42Speaker 5: Jones and Mason Smith to see if now they were
- 25:46Speaker 5: a couple of weeks away for the regular season, Falcons
- 25:49Speaker 5: aren't playing any starters, look for them to look like
- 25:53Speaker 5: they belong.
- 25:55Speaker 4: How many roster spots do you think?
- 25:57Speaker 2: I know we'll get into this a little bit next
- 25:58Speaker 2: week too, but how many are up? Anybody gonna win
- 26:01Speaker 2: themselves a roster spot on Friday.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Night only if they're in a neck and neck battle, right,
- 26:06Speaker 6: I mean, what do you figure there are four or
- 26:08Speaker 6: five spots that are legitimately open at this point, not
- 26:11Speaker 6: counting the practice squad, which we've said, right with sixteen players,
- 26:15Speaker 6: But yeah, I mean, if you go I go back
- 26:17Speaker 6: to Stacey Mack in two thousand, he made an incredible
- 26:19Speaker 6: play in the preseason finale in Dallas and had like
- 26:23Speaker 6: a seventy nine yard reverse touchdown run. They ended up
- 26:26Speaker 6: keeping him that year and they needed him and he
- 26:29Speaker 6: played pretty well, so he wasn't gonna make the roster originally,
- 26:33Speaker 6: but that play was the difference. But he was right there,
- 26:36Speaker 6: neck and neck with a couple of other guys.
- 26:38Speaker 5: Yeah, last running back, last wide receiver, defensive line. Sure,
- 26:46Speaker 5: there are roster spots up for grabs, I would say,
- 26:50Speaker 5: I think anybody who loses a last second battle, it
- 26:54Speaker 5: is probably on the practice squad. So it's a little
- 26:56Speaker 5: disingangous they're not gonna be here. That's will be part
- 26:58Speaker 5: of it. But making those decisions in the fifty three
- 27:01Speaker 5: you can make them tougher.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Okay, all right, we'll be back with you here on
- 27:04Speaker 2: JAGXAM tomorrow as we look ahead to that final roster
- 27:06Speaker 2: cut and the final preseason game of the year.
