- 1:07Speaker 2: Jeff Mosher is here for today's Football at Four. A
- 1:10Speaker 2: lot to get into. You just heard from Nick Sirianni.
- 1:14Speaker 2: He discussed what's happening or what happened with Landon Dickerson.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I think we can dive a little bit deeper into
- 1:20Speaker 2: that and what will be next for the Eagles at
- 1:23Speaker 2: that position as we bring in Jeff Mosher from the
- 1:27Speaker 2: Inside the Birds podcast, InsideTheBirds.com and PhillyVoice.com to the show.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Talking to little birds on a football at four Wednesday show.
- 1:36Speaker 2: What's going on, Mosher? How are you, buddy?
- 1:38Speaker 1: I'm good, Mike. And you?
- 1:41Speaker 2: All right. So let's talk a little bit about here.
- 1:43Speaker 2: We talked Monday. Obviously, Dickerson was a big topic of
- 1:46Speaker 2: conversation because of his play yesterday. We now know that
- 1:49Speaker 2: he will be out at least four weeks, most likely
- 1:52Speaker 2: longer it feels like here. However, Sirianni kind of gave
- 1:56Speaker 2: a weird answer. I think it's a fair question to ask.
- 1:59Speaker 2: How did not anybody realize that this guy was not
- 2:01Speaker 2: healthy enough to really play after watching him through training camp?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Do you think that is a fair observation to wonder?
- 2:09Speaker 2: How did nobody really watch Dickerson and say, maybe he's
- 2:12Speaker 2: not the same guy right now?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we talked about this on Monday, right?
- 2:17Speaker 1: I know I've mentioned it on Inside the Birds pod.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I think it's pretty significant. The final practice that they
- 2:23Speaker 1: held before the final preseason game, which is really the
- 2:26Speaker 1: last practice of training camp, it was a light practice. However,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I observed, and I think I said it here on
- 2:32Speaker 1: the show and definitely on the podcast, that Dickerson was
- 2:36Speaker 1: coming out and Kendall was rotating in. Sometimes you don't
- 2:40Speaker 1: make a big deal of that because guys cross train.
- 2:42Speaker 1: It's training camp. But he was the only one of
- 2:45Speaker 1: the starting offensive linemen who was rotating in and out.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And I just thought that that was pretty interesting. It
- 2:53Speaker 1: was the last– it was a light practice. Of all
- 2:55Speaker 1: the practices to, you know, bring a guy out a
- 2:58Speaker 1: little bit, you would think it would be a heavier
- 2:59Speaker 1: practice in pads. But this one was a very light practice.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So– I think questioning things are fair. Like, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I know Dickerson said he got rolled up in practice, right?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Didn't he say he got the injury occurred in a practice? Well,
- 3:14Speaker 1: which practice then?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Well, he said a few weeks ago. It didn't seem
- 3:17Speaker 2: like it was like a recent practice. Like, hey, last week,
- 3:21Speaker 2: right before this game, he said it was a few
- 3:23Speaker 2: weeks ago. Right.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So how could the coaching staff have not? I know
- 3:27Speaker 1: you're not. you're not playing full speed and you're practicing,
- 3:31Speaker 1: but I mean, the, the, the manner in which he
- 3:35Speaker 1: was so immobile on Sunday has to lead me to
- 3:40Speaker 1: believe that in practice, he had to look fairly immobile
- 3:43Speaker 1: as well. You don't just all of a sudden get
- 3:45Speaker 1: that way. And I think what the coaches did, and listen,
- 3:49Speaker 1: I think coaches do this a hundred percent of the
- 3:50Speaker 1: time or 10 out of 10 is is they say
- 3:53Speaker 1: if you're cleared to play, if you're medically cleared to
- 3:56Speaker 1: play and you're healthy to play and you want to play,
- 3:58Speaker 1: we'll let you get out there and give it a go.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Should they have maybe pulled him after the first few drives,
- 4:04Speaker 1: first quarter? That's for them to answer to because I
- 4:08Speaker 1: would argue that I know Drew Kendall has only played
- 4:11Speaker 1: 89 NFL snaps and he's not even a guard, he's
- 4:15Speaker 1: a center, but I think you could argue that Drew
- 4:18Speaker 1: Kendall at 100% is probably better than Landon Dickerson at
- 4:23Speaker 1: whatever he looked at, 30%, 20%. I don't know. I
- 4:26Speaker 1: know there are certain cases where a guy, you would say, hey, man,
- 4:30Speaker 1: even at 75%, this guy is way better than his backup.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And I understand that thinking, and that's why you see
- 4:35Speaker 1: guys fight through injuries. But in this case, I'm not
- 4:39Speaker 1: 100% sure. I think you would have been really stuck
- 4:43Speaker 1: either way. I think throwing Kendall in there against the
- 4:45Speaker 1: way the commanders were coming after the offense would have
- 4:47Speaker 1: been tough, too. But at least you're you're given a
- 4:50Speaker 1: shot at a healthier player. It's certainly fair to question.
- 4:53Speaker 2: All right. So that leads us into a couple of
- 4:56Speaker 2: different conversational points here with Jeff. Is Kendall the best
- 5:02Speaker 2: option to play left guard?
- 5:04Speaker 1: I don't think they have a great option to play
- 5:08Speaker 1: left guard, if we're being honest. Kendall is a career center.
- 5:11Speaker 1: He's only really started being cross trained at cross trained
- 5:15Speaker 1: at guard. Um, mostly this year, what you do in
- 5:18Speaker 1: the preseason and camp looks nice, but that's, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: when you got Jeffrey Simmons, the best defensive tackle in
- 5:24Speaker 1: the league lined up against you in a real game,
- 5:26Speaker 1: that's a totally different world. Uh, Cam Juergens is a,
- 5:29Speaker 1: has played right guard. We know that he started his
- 5:31Speaker 1: career year two as a right guard while Kelsey was
- 5:34Speaker 1: still hanging on there. And then he moved to center. Um,
- 5:38Speaker 1: so he has guard experience mostly on the right, all
- 5:41Speaker 1: on the right. I don't know about left. And I just,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I still think he's a better center than a guard.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And then obviously Willie Lampkin is a guy who's built
- 5:49Speaker 1: like a center. So I don't think there's a great,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I don't think there's a great option, but if you're
- 5:55Speaker 1: asking me game specific wise, what makes the most sense?
- 6:00Speaker 1: It might be Cam Juergens at left guard because he
- 6:02Speaker 1: has guard experience and Kendall at center. And because he's,
- 6:05Speaker 1: If you're looking for somebody who's got to go up
- 6:07Speaker 1: there against Jeffrey Simmons on a snap-to-snap basis, not get
- 6:11Speaker 1: help all the time, then you probably are better off
- 6:13Speaker 1: with Juergens than Kendall.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Juergens has played guard, but it was right guard,
- 6:18Speaker 2: not left guard. The other guys have played no guard.
- 6:21Speaker 2: So it doesn't seem that this is a great situation
- 6:25Speaker 2: with Jeffrey Simmons on the docket. You brought that up
- 6:28Speaker 2: on Monday. But you think Kendall will get the first
- 6:30Speaker 2: shot at it at left guard? That's the configuration they'll
- 6:34Speaker 2: most likely go with?
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm, I'm really, I'm trying to read the tea leaves
- 6:39Speaker 1: of what the coaches are saying. And I think normally
- 6:41Speaker 1: in this situation, they say, yeah, next man up. And they,
- 6:43Speaker 1: they pretty much, they may not tell you who it is,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but it's pretty obvious. I feel like the way they've
- 6:47Speaker 1: discussed how they like everybody is leaving some things open
- 6:51Speaker 1: to interpretation. So at this point, I'm not a hundred
- 6:55Speaker 1: percent sold that it's just left. You know, you put
- 6:59Speaker 1: Drew hit Kendall in at left guard. I'll say this also.
- 7:03Speaker 1: The prior coach, Stoutland, and the prior regime believed more
- 7:08Speaker 1: that you don't weaken two spots on the offensive line,
- 7:11Speaker 1: that you train everybody enough so that if you lose
- 7:13Speaker 1: one guy, another guy steps in and you don't move around.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But we have seen in the last, I think, year
- 7:18Speaker 1: or two, a little bit more double movement or two
- 7:21Speaker 1: guys moving when there's been an injury situation. So it's
- 7:27Speaker 1: all going to come down to who they think fits
- 7:30Speaker 1: the offense at the best position.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Right. I mean, before understating, you're right. I mean, he
- 7:34Speaker 2: didn't like say, Hey, let's say move this guy here
- 7:36Speaker 2: and move that guy there. Cause I don't want to
- 7:37Speaker 2: move two different guys. So this will be different. I
- 7:40Speaker 2: think they said that Kendall was at guard today at
- 7:43Speaker 2: the practice that was going on. So it looks like
- 7:45Speaker 2: he'll get the first shot at it. I would ask you,
- 7:47Speaker 2: you wrote over at philly voice.com thoughts on what we
- 7:51Speaker 2: learned on Mannion's office. I want to dive into that
- 7:53Speaker 2: a little deeper is just having an average left guard.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Will that make the, the offense better than we saw
- 8:04Speaker 2: last year. Oh, boy.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Will having an average left. Well, it kind of depends
- 8:09Speaker 1: on who you're going up against and what kind of
- 8:11Speaker 1: defensive scheme they're running. And, you know, I think there
- 8:14Speaker 1: are times you can hide a guard if you're running
- 8:16Speaker 1: the ball well. You know, the 49ers are a team,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and the Packers too, who have been able to run
- 8:21Speaker 1: their offenses pretty well without having the greatest offensive linemen.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You know, like they go through offensive linemen pretty quickly,
- 8:29Speaker 1: both of those teams. Even the Rams, same thing. because
- 8:32Speaker 1: they run a certain way and they play a ball
- 8:35Speaker 1: control style of game. We haven't really seen the Eagles
- 8:37Speaker 1: be able to do that yet. Um, lately, uh, they
- 8:41Speaker 1: did not run the ball very well. And, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: partly because it's not, they're learning it. Whereas the, the
- 8:47Speaker 1: Packers and 49ers it's ingrained in them. That's what the,
- 8:49Speaker 1: that's what they've run. But, you know, for, to run
- 8:52Speaker 1: the wide zone, it's not just about the lineman. You
- 8:54Speaker 1: got to have wide receivers who block. Well, the 49ers
- 8:57Speaker 1: always have really good blocking receivers and, and tight ends.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And same thing with the, um, the Packers. I'm not
- 9:03Speaker 1: sure this group here, the Eagles, whether you talk about
- 9:06Speaker 1: Devante Smith out there or Hollywood Brown, who didn't really
- 9:09Speaker 1: play much Smith. I mean, Wicks can block some, but
- 9:12Speaker 1: he's just one guy, right? Lemon just getting his feet. Well,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'm just not sure that you're able to sustain the
- 9:18Speaker 1: running game that you want to, to be able to compensate, right.
- 9:22Speaker 1: For you, what you might lack in pass pro from your,
- 9:25Speaker 1: from your guards or just your offensive line.
- 9:28Speaker 2: All right, you wrote about it over at phillyvoice.com. You
- 9:31Speaker 2: asked the question, how new was the new offense? What
- 9:34Speaker 2: were some of the new things that you observed that
- 9:38Speaker 2: they did that makes them different from what they've been
- 9:41Speaker 2: doing the previous five Sirianni years?
- 9:44Speaker 1: Sure. Well, it starts with under center, right? 30% of
- 9:47Speaker 1: their snaps were under center. And I believe what I
- 9:50Speaker 1: wrote in that story, that's up from 24 last year
- 9:53Speaker 1: and even fewer, 21 maybe the year before. But even
- 9:56Speaker 1: those numbers, the 24 and 21, were inflated by tush push,
- 10:01Speaker 1: which was a big part of their offense. That's you're
- 10:03Speaker 1: always under center with, right? So I would say if
- 10:07Speaker 1: you took the tush push away, they were even less
- 10:10Speaker 1: of a percentage under center than 24 or 21. But
- 10:13Speaker 1: they didn't have any tush pushes on on sunday to
- 10:16Speaker 1: my recollection against the commander so that that's a legit
- 10:19Speaker 1: 30 percent um under center offense you saw the wide
- 10:23Speaker 1: zone running that they incorporated they still ran inside zone
- 10:26Speaker 1: as well but they did mix in the outside and
- 10:29Speaker 1: mid-zone run that we talked about now the interesting thing
- 10:32Speaker 1: is mike they were heavy 11 personnel um way heavier
- 10:37Speaker 1: than they've been in the past and we thought that
- 10:40Speaker 1: Manion being from where he's from and his influences would
- 10:42Speaker 1: continue to be a multiple tight end kind of guy
- 10:45Speaker 1: as well. They were, they were not as big on
- 10:48Speaker 1: 12 and 13 personnel, but I do think that that's
- 10:51Speaker 1: more because of the personnel right now, because they don't
- 10:53Speaker 1: have enough depth at tight end. And they're trying to
- 10:56Speaker 1: get Mekhi Lemon integrated into the offense and, So, I mean, really,
- 11:00Speaker 1: they had three tight ends active, right? They played EJ
- 11:03Speaker 1: Jenkins for one snap. It was a great play. They
- 11:05Speaker 1: wound up popping 64-yard play action out of it. But
- 11:08Speaker 1: they really played 12 personnel mostly when they were using
- 11:11Speaker 1: multiple tight ends, and that wasn't as much.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Did you happen to see how Johnny Munt as a
- 11:17Speaker 2: blocker helped? Because it doesn't seem like he made much
- 11:20Speaker 2: of an impact when you look at the run game
- 11:22Speaker 2: in general. But is this a guy that you can say, hey,
- 11:25Speaker 2: they now have a guy that can actually block, and
- 11:27Speaker 2: that long-term, that's going to help?
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why he's here. That's the only reason he's here.
- 11:31Speaker 2: He can block.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And, yeah, he was fine. I didn't notice any kind
- 11:34Speaker 1: of– I think he moves people laterally the way he's
- 11:38Speaker 1: supposed to. But a wide zone can get blown up by,
- 11:42Speaker 1: like I was mentioning, your wide receivers if they're not
- 11:45Speaker 1: blocking well. If the defense is going to send guys
- 11:49Speaker 1: into the gaps and shoot them the way the commanders
- 11:51Speaker 1: were doing at times too. And then, of course, if
- 11:54Speaker 1: your offensive line is still learning how to, as a whole,
- 11:56Speaker 1: to execute it.
- 11:58Speaker 2: All right, you also wrote about Cooper Dejean wasn't good enough.
- 12:04Speaker 2: What was not good about Dejean, and is it something
- 12:07Speaker 2: that is going to be a weekly occurrence that we
- 12:10Speaker 2: should be worried about, or did he just have a
- 12:11Speaker 2: bad game?
- 12:13Speaker 1: That's a great question. We'll find out. It was certainly
- 12:15Speaker 1: a bad game. It was unlike him. I think he
- 12:17Speaker 1: got called for two illegal contact penalties from the slot.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and Brady said during the broadcast, I think if
- 12:24Speaker 2: you watch the replay, they were both kind of weak sauce. Yeah.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought the first one was definitely weak sauce.
- 12:30Speaker 1: The second one might have been a little bit more legit,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but either way. But I mean, he also gave up
- 12:35Speaker 1: some big plays on third down. You know, you give
- 12:38Speaker 1: up the Diggs touchdown, the Antonio Williams first catch that
- 12:41Speaker 1: took that set up the touchdown run. And he said
- 12:44Speaker 1: after the guy talked to him after the game, he said,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I my eye discipline sometimes fails me. And in this case,
- 12:50Speaker 1: it did. And I got to get better. And Vic
- 12:52Speaker 1: Fangio validated that, said yes. He also said his eye
- 12:55Speaker 1: discipline sometimes is the reason why he's so good at
- 12:58Speaker 1: what he does. So you have to take the good
- 13:00Speaker 1: with the bad. You know, every once in a while,
- 13:02Speaker 1: it's just you're going to get routed up. And Diggs
- 13:04Speaker 1: is one of the best at doing that. But I
- 13:08Speaker 1: do think it's something worth watching because, you know, he
- 13:10Speaker 1: was alternating between safety and slot. a little bit different
- 13:13Speaker 1: than alternating between outside corner and slot. And, you know,
- 13:17Speaker 1: this week you got Wanda Robinson, who's one of those
- 13:19Speaker 1: guys who's just like vintage slot receiver and he can
- 13:23Speaker 1: work the slot as good as anyone. He's not a
- 13:25Speaker 1: great player, but he's a good slot receiver. And I
- 13:28Speaker 1: guess we'll see if the gene can play. I know
- 13:30Speaker 1: he was not at practice today or he was sidelined
- 13:33Speaker 1: to practice today. So we'll have to see. Cause if,
- 13:36Speaker 1: if you don't have the gene, right, then you got
- 13:39Speaker 1: to use Michael Carter. The second, probably as your backup
- 13:43Speaker 1: slot and get him in there, which means you can't
- 13:45Speaker 1: use him as an extra safety if he's already playing
- 13:49Speaker 1: in the slot.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So then who played, then you got Epson and Makuba
- 13:54Speaker 1: at safety and Epson had gotten banged up a little
- 13:56Speaker 1: bit in that first game. It just tests your depth.
- 14:00Speaker 2: You also wrote about Jalen Carter. You said that he
- 14:03Speaker 2: got owned in the game and I was on, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 2: Monday saying that I thought that the offensive line, the
- 14:09Speaker 2: defensive line was supposed to be this area where you
- 14:11Speaker 2: had a, a big advantage over Washington. You have Carter.
- 14:14Speaker 2: You have Davis. You did not have Carter. He had
- 14:17Speaker 2: a rough day.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Yeah. You had good edge pressure, but you did not
- 14:21Speaker 1: have a lot of interior pressure. Jordan Davis did not
- 14:24Speaker 1: play a whole lot of interior pass rush snaps, which
- 14:28Speaker 1: is weird because he started to make progress in that area.
- 14:31Speaker 1: We've talked about that. They gave him the big extension.
- 14:33Speaker 1: But I think he was only on the field for
- 14:35Speaker 1: like two third downs maybe. So it was clearly– Moro
- 14:39Speaker 1: Ajomo and Carter in the four-man rush inside. And what
- 14:42Speaker 1: Washington did was they noticed that the Eagles were stunting
- 14:45Speaker 1: a lot. They were taking Jalex Hunt as an edge rusher,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and they were looping him through the A-gap, and then
- 14:52Speaker 1: Carter would either loop around or somebody else would loop around, Ajomo, right?
- 14:55Speaker 1: It was Ajomo and Hunt mostly who were involved in stunts.
- 14:59Speaker 1: And what the center for the commanders would do, he
- 15:03Speaker 1: would have to leave Carter, right, who would leave Sam Cosme,
- 15:07Speaker 1: the right guard on Carter, and then rotate to his
- 15:10Speaker 1: left to make sure he was there for Hunt stunting
- 15:13Speaker 1: up the middle. And Sam Cosme, who's, by the way,
- 15:17Speaker 1: a Pro Bowl guard. I mean, when he was not healthy,
- 15:20Speaker 1: he was not playing like it. But now he's back
- 15:21Speaker 1: and being healthy. He handled Jalen Carter, especially in the
- 15:26Speaker 1: fourth quarter, by himself quite a bit.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Moshe, the last thing I'll leave you with here as
- 15:31Speaker 2: we get ready for the Titans, let's look at them
- 15:34Speaker 2: real quick. This is a team you mentioned, Jeffrey Simmons,
- 15:37Speaker 2: is a very good interior player, which gives you some
- 15:40Speaker 2: pause this week, but they are not a very good team.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Their offensive line is not very good. Their secondary, not
- 15:46Speaker 2: very good. Cam Ward, I think, has yet to really
- 15:49Speaker 2: establish himself as a number one overall pick level player.
- 15:53Speaker 2: If you go down to Tennessee, where they are 0-3
- 15:56Speaker 2: since they moved to Tennessee last Um, if this game
- 16:01Speaker 2: is an ugly game, would you start to look at
- 16:04Speaker 2: and say, maybe we overvalued this team a little bit?
- 16:07Speaker 1: No, because I've said all along, you know, probably more
- 16:11Speaker 1: on your show than any other show. I've talked about
- 16:13Speaker 1: the idea of patience, talked about the idea that it's
- 16:16Speaker 1: going to take some time. I think they're, they're already
- 16:19Speaker 1: getting tested. With their offensive line depth, they might also
- 16:23Speaker 1: be tested with their secondary depth. If they lose, Mike, yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 1: then obviously it's like, wow, you shouldn't be one-on-one after
- 16:31Speaker 1: these two games, especially with Bears, Rams, and Jaguars coming
- 16:35Speaker 1: up next. But it's still not the end of the world.
- 16:38Speaker 1: And if they don't play well... It's going to take time.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I know I'll probably sit here and practice some patience
- 16:45Speaker 1: and not very many people will, but I do think
- 16:49Speaker 1: it's going to take some time. Remember a Super Bowl year,
- 16:51Speaker 1: it was not very pretty for the first five or
- 16:54Speaker 1: six games, right? They were two and two, I think, right?
- 16:56Speaker 1: Before they rattled off a little bit of a win
- 16:58Speaker 1: streak there. And even early in the win streak, like
- 17:01Speaker 1: the wins against the Browns and Jaguars that year were
- 17:03Speaker 1: kind of ugly. So take some time.
- 17:07Speaker 2: All right, well, Jeff Mosher is back on Monday. He'll
- 17:09Speaker 2: look back at the Eagles and the Titans. We have
- 17:12Speaker 2: football at four tomorrow here on the Sports Pass Live.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Andrew will look at all the matchups in this game
- 17:16Speaker 2: we're looking for. And Adam's back on Friday on the
- 17:19Speaker 2: Sports Pass Football at Four, powered by the Inside the
- 17:22Speaker 2: Birds podcast. Thanks, man.
- 17:23Speaker 1: You got it.
- 17:24Speaker 2: All right, Jeff Mosher, everybody. And, of course, he is
- 17:27Speaker 2: back on Monday with a Mosher Monday.
