- 0:09Speaker 1: Classy trapper in the videos. There here comes the sun
- 0:17Speaker 1: and that's what we're in for this weekend, so make
- 0:19Speaker 1: the most of it. In fact, we're going to do
- 0:22Speaker 1: our roll of honlineal for the Great North Run. In fact,
- 0:25Speaker 1: last weekend I'll tell you what the runners in Newcastle
- 0:28Speaker 1: could have done with some sunshine, because as you will
- 0:31Speaker 1: hear from these reports, it wasn't particularly nice weekend up there.
- 0:35Speaker 1: But so anyway, let's get on with it. Last Sunday
- 0:38Speaker 1: morning saw the eighth of September saw a stagger in
- 0:41Speaker 1: sixty thousand runners take part in the Great North Ron.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So I tracked down some local runners with their times
- 0:47Speaker 1: and a couple of stories to tell. So let's start
- 0:49Speaker 1: with Darren Crewe and his partner Jodi Stokes, who started
- 0:53Speaker 1: just after the Elite men. Darren told me, as we
- 0:57Speaker 1: were saying earlier about the weather, the heavens opened after
- 0:59Speaker 1: the warm up and it didn't stop until they finished running. Now, amazingly,
- 1:04Speaker 1: with sixty thousand people there, I can't believe this that
- 1:08Speaker 1: Darren bumped it into his running club colleague Greg Dixon.
- 1:13Speaker 1: All those people and he has to bump into a
- 1:15Speaker 1: clubmate of all things. I mean that's like, what's that like?
- 1:19Speaker 1: It's like bumping into your next door neighbor if you
- 1:21Speaker 1: go on holiday in America. Anyway, with lots of ugi
- 1:25Speaker 1: yogi yogis and high fives. They crossed the iconic time
- 1:28Speaker 1: bridge early on and dug in at the hill at
- 1:31Speaker 1: mile eleven, then a downhill at mile twelve. You can
- 1:35Speaker 1: normally see the finish, but due to misty, murky wet conditions,
- 1:39Speaker 1: he couldn't see it until they hit the four hundred
- 1:41Speaker 1: meters to go sign. Now Darren running at one hour
- 1:45Speaker 1: thirty nine thirty one and Jody managed a PB which
- 1:49Speaker 1: is quite a feat with all those runners getting in
- 1:51Speaker 1: the way, it's a job to get going. But she
- 1:53Speaker 1: running in a time of one hour forty five twenty nine,
- 1:57Speaker 1: So big thanks to you Darren for that report. So now,
- 2:01Speaker 1: the runner that Darren bumped into was fellow club mate
- 2:04Speaker 1: Greg Dixon. Greg was running this one for the third
- 2:07Speaker 1: time and finished in a time of one hour forty
- 2:10Speaker 1: two minutes. He also mentions the constant rain, which I
- 2:13Speaker 1: don't know, doesn't seem to bother runners too much once
- 2:16Speaker 1: you get going. Now you can only get wet once,
- 2:18Speaker 1: can't you. But he wanted to thank his wife Jan
- 2:20Speaker 1: who stood in the rain at sath Shields for the
- 2:23Speaker 1: duration of the run. Greg told me his next stop
- 2:26Speaker 1: is the Jersey Marathon, which is on Sunday, the sixth
- 2:28Speaker 1: of October, so good luck for that one, Greg.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Katrina Peak recently completed the Hive Bay Triathlon, then not
- 2:36Speaker 1: long after picked up an injury just before the Great
- 2:38Speaker 1: North Run, but I'm pleased to say that she successfully
- 2:41Speaker 1: completed the course in two hours thirty two minutes. Katrina
- 2:45Speaker 1: told me that her fellow runners Leah Staveley, along with
- 2:48Speaker 1: Rona and Terry Fryer, were all excited as on Saturday
- 2:51Speaker 1: they set off on the long drive to Newcastle. They
- 2:54Speaker 1: were joined on the sidelines by their support team, Simon
- 2:58Speaker 1: and Kendra Sharman and Ta. Trina's story follows the trend
- 3:01Speaker 1: of the others constant rain, but it didn't dampen their
- 3:04Speaker 1: spirits at all thanks to the incredible atmosphere and the
- 3:07Speaker 1: roadside support. Katrina said she wore a medal all the
- 3:10Speaker 1: way home and all four of them, Katrina, Leah, Rona
- 3:13Speaker 1: and Terry have all entered the twenty twenty five Palot
- 3:16Speaker 1: already and An added bonus to the weekend was the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Katrina raised a good amount of money for bowel counter UK,
- 3:24Speaker 1: a disease that has closely affected her family. So Katrina,
- 3:27Speaker 1: thanks for sharing your story with us and for everybody
- 3:29Speaker 1: here at Radio Folkston. Now Melanroyd Powell, Mel's son Liam Allen,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and South Kent Harry and Marie Wantson all made it
- 3:37Speaker 1: to the soggy st art line and managed to find
- 3:40Speaker 1: themselves amongst many who were in the wrong zone. So
- 3:43Speaker 1: runners were mixed up with walkers, making it a bit
- 3:45Speaker 1: frustrating to get going, especially if you wanted to run it.
- 3:49Speaker 1: We re finished in two hours forty two minutes. Liam
- 3:52Speaker 1: ran in two hours forty five. Royd came home in
- 3:55Speaker 1: two hours five minutes, but Mel picked up a pateller
- 3:58Speaker 1: injury and had to walk the last three miles, finishing
- 4:01Speaker 1: two hours forty five. Once again, Mel said great atmosphere
- 4:05Speaker 1: and supportive crowds as she now tries to get herself
- 4:08Speaker 1: fit for the Great South Run, which is on twentieth
- 4:11Speaker 1: of October. Now, the Great South Run is a ten miler,
- 4:15Speaker 1: whereas the Great North Run is a half marathon and
- 4:17Speaker 1: the Great South Run is around at the Portsmouth area.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So thanks for that report, Meil and get fit soon,
- 4:23Speaker 1: take it easy, don't get fit too soon now kru
- 4:27Speaker 1: from folks. The Running An Athletics Club headed north last
- 4:30Speaker 1: weekend and this is how they got on. Adam Porter
- 4:33Speaker 1: was first honed for the club in one hour twenty
- 4:35Speaker 1: four forty seven, then Darren greg and Jody as we said,
- 4:39Speaker 1: followed in by Jas O'Callahan one hour forty seven twenty eight,
- 4:43Speaker 1: Terry Fryer two eighteen twenty seven, Sofi o' callahan two
- 4:47Speaker 1: hours twenty three six, World on Sophie Neil Adams two
- 4:51Speaker 1: twenty four to twenty six, Jason Crockford two twenty four
- 4:55Speaker 1: thirty one and Rowe Atkins two thirty three thirty three.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And a special shout out goes for David Wilkes. Now
- 5:03Speaker 1: David is a volunteer train driver down on the Romney
- 5:06Speaker 1: hynd In Church Railway. He ran in at two hours,
- 5:10Speaker 1: three minutes forty three second and big thanks to Julianne
- 5:13Speaker 1: there for letting me know about that. She said that
- 5:15Speaker 1: David's a really humble, quiet man and couldn't get much
- 5:19Speaker 1: out of him, but as a pretty good time. David
- 5:21Speaker 1: and I had a message from Collette Windsor to say
- 5:24Speaker 1: that her friend Jade Lee I haven't got at a time,
- 5:27Speaker 1: but she did the run dressed as a dinosaur. Well,
- 5:30Speaker 1: our brave is that must be the wettest dinosaur in
- 5:33Speaker 1: the Northeast. That's as many runners as I could find locally.
- 5:38Speaker 1: There was plenty more out there, but I think some
- 5:39Speaker 1: of them are a bit shy to come forward. But
- 5:41Speaker 1: thank you everyone that sent in your time or your report,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and we've got a special song for you, and you
- 5:46Speaker 1: might have even heard it at the weekend. Now, this
- 5:49Speaker 1: song is an old song right nineteen seventy eight a
- 5:52Speaker 1: group called Lindi's Farm now Linda's Farm were born and
- 5:55Speaker 1: bred in Newcastle and Linda's Finn, in fact, is a
- 5:58Speaker 1: holy island. This is a piece of land that's just
- 6:01Speaker 1: a bit further up the coast. You know the song
- 6:03Speaker 1: that's we're going to play now. I'm sure we will
- 6:05Speaker 1: remind you of your lovely wets you weekend. So once again,
- 6:09Speaker 1: thank you and well done to all the runners who
- 6:11Speaker 1: run the Great North Row and listen to this. One
- 6:14Speaker 1: is called run for Home.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Love travel van with the guitar in my hand, and
- 6:44Speaker 2: the night ever ROBBN for some phones, made some mistakes
- 6:55Speaker 2: and my share of the Briggs seeing the boy. It's
- 7:00Speaker 2: on the make and on the bomb, run bomb, not
- 7:08Speaker 2: as fast as I can bo
