- 0:00Two minutes ago,
- 0:01we did something this congregation has done for generations.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: For decades, two families stood up here and they made promises.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: They promised to raise their children to know God.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: They promised to love them,
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: to protect them,
- 0:21to do everything within their power to give them a good and a
- 0:27faithful life.
- 0:31And I want us to just hold on to that beautiful picture because
- 0:36I don't think that
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: those promises were just sentimental.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I think that they were fierce.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And many of us know as parents what I mean.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: There is almost nothing that a parent will do for a child.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: We will go without sleep.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: We will go without money.
- 1:04We will lie awake rehearsing every single danger the world
- 1:10might hold and try to
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: figure out how to stand between our child and those dangers.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: The love runs deep.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: The love runs hard and it will spin itself completely.
- 1:30But there is a question I want us to sit with this morning on a
- 1:36day where we are
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: celebrating exactly that kind of fierce parental love.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: What happens when a parent's love, as real as it is, reaches its limit?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: because it does reach a limit.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: We are finite.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Our resources, they run out.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Sometimes our wisdom runs out.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, God forgive us, our courage runs out.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: What then?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 2:21the story that we just heard from Genesis 21 walks straight
- 2:26into that question and
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: it does not flinch.
- 2:32Let me set the scene for all of us because this is not a tidy
- 2:40story and I'm not
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: going to pretend that it is.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Abraham has two sons.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: One
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Isaac is the child of Sarah,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: the child of the long-awaited promise,
- 2:57the baby everyone laughed about because Abraham and Sarah were
- 3:03far too old to have
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: children.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The other Ishmael is the child of Hagar, an enslaved Egyptian woman.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Two women, two children,
- 3:19one father in the flesh and that father is Abraham and the
- 3:26household cannot hold
- 3:29both of them within it at the celebration of Isaac's weaning
- 3:34Sarah looks at Ishmael
- 3:36and decides he is a threat to her son's inheritance she tells
- 3:42Abraham to cast
- 3:44them out the slave woman and the boy and just send them away
- 3:50into the desert the
- 3:51text tells us that this was deeply disturbing to Abraham and of
- 3:57course it was
- 3:59Ishmael was his son as well and Abraham is caught between two
- 4:05children and he
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: cannot protect them both
- 4:12So early one morning he gets up and he hands Hagar some bread
- 4:21and a skin of water
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: and sends them out into the wilderness of Beersheba.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I want us to be honest about that this morning,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: especially today,
- 4:36especially on a day when we have just promised to protect all
- 4:41of our children.
- 4:44Here is the great patriarch of our faith and his protection for
- 4:51one child fails.
- 4:58Runs out at the edge of a desert with a loaf of bread and a
- 5:03skin of water.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: The love was probably real.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: The protection
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: It was not.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: It was not enough.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And then, frankly, it gets worse.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Out in the desert, the earthly father's water runs out.
- 5:27And Hagar does the thing that I think is the most human and the
- 5:32most heartbreaking
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: moment in this whole story.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: She cannot watch her son die.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: So she lays him down in the shade under a bush and she walks away.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: The distance of a bow shot, the story tells us.
- 5:54And she sits down and she says,
- 5:57do not let me look on the death of the child.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And she lifts up her voice and she weeps.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: That is the limit of a parent's love.
- 6:12Not because she loved him too little but because she loved him
- 6:16too much that she
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: could not bear to watch what was about to happen.
- 6:22She had given him everything she had and everything she had had
- 6:27run out and there
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: was nothing left in her hands but grief.
- 6:35If the story ended there it would be an honest picture of how
- 6:40the world breaks the
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: people we love and breaks our ability to save them.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And frankly it would be very depressing on a day like this.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: But the story doesn't end there.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Here is what happens next.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: God heard the voice of the boy.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Hold on to that.
- 7:05I need you to feel the weight of that line the mother has given
- 7:09up the father is
- 7:12miles away the water is gone the child is lying under a bush in
- 7:18the desert about to
- 7:19die and the narrator says God heard the boy the angel of God
- 7:28calls out of heaven
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: and says to Hagar what troubles you Hagar
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Do not be afraid for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Where he is.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Not where he should be.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Not in Abraham's household.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Not in the covenant line.
- 7:52Not in any of the places that the religious imagination of that
- 7:57time or really our
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: time would have expected God to be paying attention to.
- 8:04God heard him right where he was cast out dying forgotten by
- 8:11everyone and then God
- 8:15opens Hagar's eyes and she sees a well that apparently had been
- 8:22there the whole
- 8:23time and she fills the skin and gives the boy a drink and then
- 8:29the text says God
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: was with the boy
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: all the rest of his life.
- 8:38Here's the point,
- 8:40and it is the bedrock of everything else I want to say today.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Parents, you will do almost anything for your children.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: God will do more.
- 9:02When the parent's love reaches its limit God's love is just
- 9:08getting started.
- 9:11Where the mother walked away because she could not bear to
- 9:15watch God walked toward
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: the child because God could not bear to leave.
- 9:26This is the deep theology underneath what we did up front here
- 9:34this morning.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: When those parents,
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: when y'all promised to protect and to provide,
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: you were not promising to be God.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Let that sink in because it's important for us as parents.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: They were promising to point towards God.
- 9:57They were saying in effect we will love this child with
- 10:01everything we have and we
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: already know that that will not be enough.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: So we are entrusting this child to the one whose love does not run out.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And God always shows up.
- 10:24and notice how God shows up in this story it's not with a
- 10:27lecture it's not with
- 10:31some sort of theological argument or idea God hears a cry and
- 10:38provides water that's
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: it
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Walter Brueggemann would call this the God of the dispossessed.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: The God who shows up precisely at the place of abandonment.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: I would simply say it is the most relational thing in the world.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: A child cries and God hears and God comes.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And it's not a transaction.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: that is a heavenly father.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: There is one more detail you cannot miss in this.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: The boy's name is Ishmael and Ishmael means God hears.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: The promise was sewn into his name before he was ever born.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Every time anyone said his name out loud
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: They were preaching the gospel without even knowing it.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: God hears.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: God hears.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: God hears.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I want to make a little bit of a turn because this story isn't just,
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: about Hagar and Ishmael and Abraham.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: It's about us.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: The whole drama of Genesis hangs on the question of children
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Who is the true heir?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Who carries the promise?
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Whose line does God bless?
- 12:19And the surface answer is Isaac,
- 12:21the child of Sarah,
- 12:22the child of the promise.
- 12:24That is the line that runs to Jacob,
- 12:27to Israel,
- 12:28to David and to the baby born in Bethlehem.
- 12:34But here's what the New Testament does with all of this and it
- 12:39is one of the most
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: generous moves of all of Scripture.
- 12:42Paul takes the whole question of whose children are we and
- 12:47blows the doors off of it.
- 12:50In Galatians he writes that the real children of Abraham are
- 12:54not defined by blood at all.
- 12:57If you belong to Christ then you are Abraham's offspring heirs
- 13:02according to the promise.
- 13:04heirs you not because of your bloodline not because you were
- 13:09born inside the right
- 13:10family because you belong to Christ and it goes further than
- 13:16that in Romans Paul
- 13:18says that all who are led by the spirit of God are children of
- 13:23God that we have
- 13:24received a spirit of adoption by which we cry out to God the
- 13:30way small children cry
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: out to a parent
- 13:34Ishmael God hears and John John puts it plainly as it can be
- 13:41put see what the love
- 13:44of the father has given us that we should be called children of
- 13:49God and that is
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: what we are church that's the whole of it that is what we
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: dedicated those children this morning to whether we knew it or not.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: We did not promise to have all of the answers.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: You won't have all the answers.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: You probably already know that.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Certainly many of your family members know that as well.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: We promised to be steady though.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: to be a trusted presence in their lives.
- 14:26We promise to keep pointing to a faith that is big enough to
- 14:30hold their whole lives.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: To the parents who stood up here this morning, your love is fierce.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: It's good.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: It's great even.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: But I'm afraid to tell you it's just not going to be enough sometimes.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: That's okay.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: It was never supposed to be.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Your job is not to be God for your child.
- 15:05Your job is to keep handing your child back to the God who
- 15:11hears them where they are.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: The God who goes farther than you can go.
- 15:21The God who is already out in every wilderness your child will
- 15:24ever wander into and
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: is wading with water.
- 15:30and to all of us because every one of us is somebody's child
- 15:34and every one of us
- 15:35has been out under a bush in the desert at some point in our
- 15:39lives hear the good
- 15:41news of Genesis 21 God heard the voice of the boy where he was
- 15:50and God will hear
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: you wherever you are as well you are not outside of the family
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: There is no wilderness far enough to put you out there.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: You are a child of God and that is what you are.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: God hears.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: God hears.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: God hears.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Amen.
