- 0:00And welcome to the start of a new women's college basketball season here on the
- 0:04Yukon Sports Network, our first women's basketball coaches show of the season, and
- 0:08the head coach of the Huskies beginning his thirty ninth season as well. It's
- 0:12Gino Oriama. It's hard to believe, Gino, You've spent more than half
- 0:16of your life in stores Connecticut doing the same thing. Does it get old?
- 0:23I don't know if it gets old, but I certainly got got much
- 0:27older. And I was just thinking about that walking down. I was in
- 0:34the training room, actually, I was in the weight room with some of
- 0:38the players are in there, and I thought, you know, that's kind
- 0:41of the fun part about coaching, is the interactions that you have with your
- 0:46players. You know, some of the some of the other stuff. Yeah,
- 0:51that's probably gotten old, but you try to minimize how much you do
- 0:56with that stuff and try to do more of the stuff that's still fun.
- 1:00Yeah, keeps you young. It's like your grandkids, right, yeah,
- 1:03always, And how are your grand grandsons doing great? Doing great? I
- 1:07can't believe that one of them is going to be in high school next year
- 1:11at this time, and I just have no idea you know how fast it
- 1:17went. Yeah, you're going to try to enjoy it as much as you
- 1:19can. Yep, that's for sure, and I'm understanding that completely. All
- 1:23right, let's get to your basketball team here. Other than Jenna l Alfree's
- 1:29achilles rupture over the summer, you've got thirteen healthy bodies. Knock on wood.
- 1:34All right, It's gonna take Ayana a little bit to get back at
- 1:36it. But what have you liked about your team over the first month of
- 1:40full practices? And I know you have them over the summer too, but
- 1:42once you got going from October third sense, what if you liked about your
- 1:46team getting ready for the new season. I do think that our energy is
- 1:51really good. I think we compete really really hard. We have pretty good
- 1:57leadership in the court. There's you know, there's a sense of excitement because
- 2:05pages around too kind of clean up whatever messes occur. We're a little bit
- 2:12older, even though we have a lot of players that that haven't played any
- 2:17basketball yet. There just seems to be a different different mindset, a different
- 2:23attitude, you know. And we'll see about that during when once the games
- 2:30begin. But we shoot the ball really really well. I think we get
- 2:35out and transition really well. So we've got we've got some strengths that we
- 2:38can build on, and now it's just a matter of, like you said,
- 2:45get everybody healthy, get it Yana back, and you know, let's
- 2:49hope it stays that way. Yeah, you had a media avail yesterday and
- 2:53you mentioned some of the things of the Syracuse scrimmage that you had at Gamble
- 2:57last Saturday, and it sounds like from from the from what you said,
- 3:00Caroline, Asi and Aliyah did an awful lot really well. Yeah, they
- 3:06did. The three of them kind of carried the scoring load. We were
- 3:10able to you know, we scored ninety points and we were able to get
- 3:17the shots that we worked on in practice, which is great. And defensively,
- 3:23there were times where we were really really good. I think we need
- 3:27to clean up some mental things that we struggled with, become more disciplined on
- 3:35the defensive end. I thought Ash gave us some great minutes off the bench.
- 3:43I think overall, it was a really really successful scrimmage. Yeah,
- 3:46you mentioned there were a lot of files called. Is that part of the
- 3:50maybe points of emphasis that the officials are trying to encourage this season or is
- 3:53that just playing sloppiness on the part of the young ladies. Well, it's
- 3:58a little bit of both. I think early on in the season, the
- 4:01officials are overly anxious to prove their point of what the points of emphasis are
- 4:11going to be. So we've had the officials that practice a lot, and
- 4:16our players are starting to get a sentence for what is and what isn't a
- 4:20foul. But it's just comes down to each player being disciplined enough to play
- 4:28really, really, really hard and have the energy level and the intensity level
- 4:33without it becoming counterproductive by failing people. G know, what are some of
- 4:39the subtle changes that the officials are going to be enforcing this year, or
- 4:43at least the start of the season. I think the fans will probably notice
- 4:46that there's no arc on the court. You know, there is last year
- 4:50if you remember, there were two arcs, there was one and one for
- 4:54the women. They've eliminated the women's arc, so it's not like we're using
- 4:58the men's arc. You know, there just isn't going to be one.
- 5:01So that's going to be a big, big difference difference. And I don't
- 5:08know that there's going to be anything else that are going to make a big
- 5:15impact. Other than that, really, I think the point of emphasis always
- 5:19is freedom of movement. Let the players go from point A to point B.
- 5:27I've always said that one of the problems that women's basketball has is how
- 5:30much fouling goes on off the ball, which limits player mobility, which limits
- 5:39how the game looks. So those are going to stay. Those are going
- 5:43to stay the same, And I believe there's going to be more emphasis on
- 5:48the offense creating an offensive foul situation rather than penalizing the defense. A lot
- 5:58of times, if there's any kind of you know, contact, it automatically
- 6:01goes against the defense, when really the offensive player initiated that contact, right,
- 6:10you know nothing, I don't think anything big. Okay, more of
- 6:13Gino later. We'll visit with Tiny Cardoza and then canter to officially new members
- 6:17of the Yukon coaching staff, as our Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show continues in
- 6:21a moment here on Learfield
