- 1:26the Crystal Prophecy Old Dutch Cleanser, Famous Purchasing Dirt, presented Nick Kriner,
- 1:34Famous Purchasing Crime. Every week at this time. Two great names are John
- 1:45as Old Dutch Cleanser Brings are one of the most responseful and daring characters in
- 1:49all detective fiction. Nick Cutter Master, Detective good Nick, how do you
- 2:00know it couldn't have been suicide? The evidence shows it, Patsy, But
- 2:05the windows were locked on the inside, no one went through the door.
- 2:07If it was murder, how was it done? The same evidence, Betsy
- 2:12the Bottle tells how and why it was murderer. Now for the case of
- 2:21the Crystal prophecy. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by Old Dutch
- 2:24Glinter. Our story begins in Nick's office about ten o'clock one bright sunny spring
- 2:30morning. Well, I'll be darn what is it, Patsy Nake. I'm
- 2:36founding the latest records on suicides, and they show that during the past six
- 2:39weeks, four women have committed suicide. Well, what's so curious about that?
- 2:44Well, each of these women was in her middle thirties. Each was
- 2:46a widow with quite a bit of money, and in each case the police
- 2:51couldn't find a single clue to the reason for the suicides. Hmmm, when
- 2:54was the last one? Night before last? Uh? Missus Doris Manson,
- 3:00M don't you think there might be some connection between these suicides? Maybe?
- 3:06Certainly looks like a lot of coincidence. If there isn't That's what I thought.
- 3:10Are we going to do anything about it? We are. We're going
- 3:14to finish the report I'm working on, and then we're going down to talk
- 3:15to Maddy about this, this epidemic of suicides. Good afternoon, Hatian.
- 3:36I hope I'm not ladies do and memaib you I expect. I get more
- 3:42excited every time I come here Russian them to be seen. Mimsai will please
- 3:47to sit there, I go tell Master, thank you atonmous that well that
- 4:00you rive. Oh, I couldn't be late to see you. Master.
- 4:03I do someone hear more and what you have heard has pleased you. Oh
- 4:08yes, everything has happened just as you said it would. Just after under
- 4:12to the other day, I dropped my purse and a man picked it up
- 4:15for me. It was a name named Robert Winter, just as you said
- 4:17it would be this Robot Winter. He please Joe, Oh yes, this
- 4:21is a perfect gentlemen. Is so handsome. I think that he's remotely inclined,
- 4:28and I thought, I understand madam. Please to draw near and look
- 4:34into the crystals. Do not allow your attention to wonder for an instant,
- 4:41oh ball of ever knowing like bring to your surface the truth about Robert Winter
- 4:46and Master Langdon make the future clear that we may read it. The boy
- 4:57begins to clear her picture is for I see, I see. No,
- 5:03Oh, it cannot be. Oh, ball of crystal are your show.
- 5:09I'm sorry, madam. I cannot tell you what the crystal ball has shown
- 5:13to be the future for you. It is better that you remain in ignorance.
- 5:15No, there's anything there. I remember to tell me. The crystal
- 5:20ball shows, madam that you will shortly take your own life. But that's
- 5:27absurd. I have no reason to do away with myself. I am sorry.
- 5:31I am only the instrument through which the pictures are made clear. But
- 5:36now that I know about it, isn't there any way that future can be
- 5:40changed? It is difficult, madam, very difficult, not do anything anything.
- 5:46Can't you help me? It is possible, madam. It is a
- 5:49long and difficult process. It will mean that I must deny myself to all
- 5:55my other disciples. Much time will be lost, much mommy will be lost.
- 6:00I have money. I'll give you money. To take a great deal
- 6:03of money, madam. I shall have to devote all my time to watching
- 6:06over you until a danger is past. How much would that be? It
- 6:12would be one hundred thousand dollars. Oh, no, I can't pay that
- 6:17much. It is well known that Madame wears paroles worth that amount. Give
- 6:23up my par parows me nothing, Madame when the owner is dead. No,
- 6:30I've an up will power to keep from killing myself, and if necessarily
- 6:33I can hire somebody to watch me day and night for much less than one
- 6:36hundred thousand dollars, as you wish, madam, But it would not be
- 6:41well. I would pay that much to anybody for something I should be able
- 6:44to do myself. No, thank you as you please, madam. Good
- 6:48hey, and may I wish you everything that fortune will bring you. You
- 7:05know as well as I do. Nick, that suicides running waves. I
- 7:09know, I know that's true, Maddy. But it seems to me that
- 7:11there's too much coincidence in these four. Each of them is too much like
- 7:14the other. Oh that's crazy, Nick. The first one drove a car
- 7:16off a cliff, the next jumped off a building, the third fixed herself
- 7:19up in the closed garage with a car motor running. And this last one
- 7:24jumps in front of a subway train. But Maddy, did you notice that
- 7:27each of these suicides was a woman in the middle thirty's, a widow,
- 7:29and that each had a considerable amount of money. Sure, sure, I
- 7:31know all that, but what's approved now? Look? Nick, my squad
- 7:33investigated every one of these depths and we didn't find anything but suicide. Okay,
- 7:39Marie, okay, Ah, Nick, you're getting all hot and bothered
- 7:42about something. It's just a coincidence, and that's all. Robert, how
- 8:01nice? Come in? Hello, Martha, my dear. I hurried over
- 8:05as soon as I got your phone call. What's wrong? It rated?
- 8:07El Bay? He told me thet awful thing. Really, I've known him
- 8:11for a long time, never heard him saying anything that didn't come true.
- 8:16Does everything really come true? Indeed it does. I'll never forget good Dais
- 8:22Manson. He told her that she was going to take her own life and
- 8:26did she? Yes, poor thing. She was standing on a subway platform
- 8:30one day when the train came along. She'd jumped in front of it.
- 8:33Oh, Robert, everybody told me that I was going to kill myself.
- 8:39Oh that's terrible. Isn't there anything we can do? Elbay said that he
- 8:43could do something about it, but it would cost me one hundred thousand dollars.
- 8:46I told him I couldn't afford to pay that much, not when your
- 8:50life is in the balance. No, I can't believe I'm going to commit
- 8:54suicide. I have never known Elbay to be wrong. I think it would
- 8:58be a better way to pay him, Marpa, I'm not going to do
- 9:00it well, my dear. No, you can come to me for any
- 9:03help you need. Oh, thank you, Robert, I know I can.
- 9:07No, I'm about a glass of your fine party to do this.
- 9:11Bo's good. I think that's an excellent idea. I'll get it, I
- 9:18must say. I admire your courage, my dear. I'm not brave.
- 9:22I just won't part with all my money for something I don't think will happen.
- 9:26The whine will make you feel better. Why, I'm all with help
- 9:35and now, Martha, to your health and long life. Hello, Hello,
- 9:54Martha, this is Commander Huntington. I just called to see if you'd
- 9:58received my invitation. Yes, lying here in front of me, I just
- 10:01know you're going to enjoy Rashid Albey. He's such an interesting person. Yes,
- 10:07yes, but whatever is the matter my idea? Who sounds as though
- 10:09you don't like Albay? Oh, it isn't that Communio. Just as he
- 10:15told me something very unpleasant he did. Whatever was it, I'd rather not
- 10:20discuss it. Com here here, Oh love Martha. Why don't you try
- 10:22him again? Perhaps he's looked into his crystal again and has seen something for
- 10:26the better. You do you think there's a chance. I most certainly do
- 10:31think about a dear anyway, As for you tomorrow at my party, Goodbye,
- 10:35goodbye, Comunia, and thanks. Try him again, Yes, I'll
- 10:41do it. Why didn't I think of that? Oh? I'm sure he
- 10:46sees something else? Yes? Is this a thing? Yes, this is
- 10:58missus langdon I've got to speak obey one way, one moment. Good evening,
- 11:07Missus Lang. I just had to call. I wondered if you would
- 11:11look into your crystal ball again, since it said the same thing I have
- 11:16looked many times. Madam. The pictures have not chased. The span of
- 11:20your life is growing short. Oh no, I beg of you to reconsider
- 11:24before it is too late. I won't waiting to repay you one hundred thousand
- 11:28dollars. That that's what you mean? I last, then what is written
- 11:33will be so. I am sorry, madam. The stand of your life
- 11:39run out rapidly. Oh, I never should have called him the person here's
- 11:46me, So perhaps I feel better to drake a glass of wine. Maybe
- 11:54this will let me out of the terrible mood. I certainly hope. So
- 12:01what I've got h it was aten nice if you ever picked me up this
- 12:20morning, Sorry, panty, I just happen to be going by. What's
- 12:24what's on the radio? Will you police fans? Sure? Oh gosh,
- 12:28it's a beautiful morning. Garten go to him locking toy be boded, bertularly
- 12:35got forty three, go to fifty four nine. Damn Gravic. Right out
- 12:39of all that, I'm in radio personality two five six and two five seven,
- 12:46Get the fourteen eighty five Norden Avenue. It's just judgean medicine and homotide
- 12:50squad in suicide and primitive. That is all me. You don't suppose that
- 12:56could be honest, But I think we'll find out we can beat that unless
- 12:58than five minutes. Well, Maddie, but the reddic this time? Oh,
- 13:11I don't know, nick. I just got here myself, only had
- 13:13time to find out that this is the same kind of case as the ones
- 13:16we were talking about. Do you mean the one who committed suicide was a
- 13:20woman. Yeah, in her thirties. And well that's right, Patsy,
- 13:22As we're gonna take a look. Yeah, assure that she's right in here
- 13:26in the library, right Las. She is the late Martheling hum hm say
- 13:33the cause of death is cyanide adging by the smile, Yeah, I noticed
- 13:37the bitter even smell too. Did you leave a note, sergeant, Not
- 13:39that I've been able to find. She didn't leave a note, Patsy.
- 13:43And it looks as if she tried to leave us a message. Yeah,
- 13:45what do you mean? I don't see anything for Look, Maddie in her
- 13:48hand. Oh, I've already looked at that. It's nothing but an invitation
- 13:50of some swink tea party. Come off this afternoon, Camil Honey, then
- 13:56request the pleasure of your presence in an afternoon tea. And annas be not
- 14:01an analyst to the outcours on and so forth. Yeah, well, what
- 14:03makes you think that means anything? Nick? Oh, she happened to be
- 14:07holding it in her hand and she died. Well, she could have picked
- 14:09it up before she knocked herself. Hold no, no, no, I
- 14:11don't think so many It wouldn't be easy to open a bottle, pour out
- 14:13a drink, and hold onto a card like this at the same time.
- 14:16Boo, she must have put it down before she put herself to fatal drink.
- 14:20That's right, So she must have made a superhuman effort to pick it
- 14:22up again. Remember Cyanide acts almost instantaneously. Oh, I think missus Langdon
- 14:28picked this up with a hope that it would lead us to her murderer.
- 14:31What's that? That's right, Martha Langdon was murdered. But loud Nick,
- 14:35The windows are locked and the name says no one's been here all day.
- 14:39The dame drinks poison, and you say she was moody. I do I
- 14:41do Maddy smell this bottle of wine? Uh say yeah, yes, the
- 14:48bottle has Cyanide in it. Tool and no one is going to commit suicide
- 14:52by drinking Sian, I'd poisoned the whole bottle. He only put the poison
- 14:54in the glass, No, Maddy, Martha Langdon was murdered. How back
- 15:11to the case of the Crystal prophecy. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought you
- 15:16by old Dutch Glinter. As we pick up our story, Nick and Maddy
- 15:20are talking to Robert Winter, who says he hurried over at mount of Langton's
- 15:22home as soon as he heard of it. Yap, mister Winter, do
- 15:26you know anything about this team Missus Comlia Huntington is giving this afternoon? Why?
- 15:31Yes, I'm intending the party more as though, can you think of
- 15:33any reason why Missus Langton should have picked up this invitation in her dying moments?
- 15:39No? I can, It'll probably be a very dull affair. Uh
- 15:41huh, Oh, thank you very much, mister Winner. Quite all right.
- 15:46I hope you're able to catch man's murderom goodbye. Oh mister Winter.
- 15:52Did you happen to know a Missus Nora Church Why? And Missus Dorris Manson?
- 16:00Yes? I did, Thank you, mister Weather, Thank you very
- 16:06much. Do you suspect mister Winter? I don't know. Of course,
- 16:14those steps he wears were enough to make meet suspicious of him. That's sound
- 16:18evidence. But the fact that mister Winter knew at least two of the other
- 16:22dead women is interesting at least, and the fact that he's going to Missus
- 16:26Hunting's part of this afternoon also interests me. You think all those other women
- 16:30were murdered too? I'm positive Bessy proving if it's going to be something else.
- 16:36Well, come on, we're too Nick. I want you to go
- 16:37home and get pretty up. You and I are going to that tea this
- 16:41afternoon. Oh quite a party, isn't it. Nick. You haven't explained
- 16:53how you happen to know missus Huntington so well, though I've known her a
- 16:56long time. Apparently when we shared up at the door, she accidents.
- 17:00Now you were a long lost relative. Our confess. It's very simple.
- 17:04I recovered some jewels firs some years ago. Oh, let's if I'm not
- 17:10going to make good of my promise to marry told him I keep an eye
- 17:14on the winter. But he seems to disappear in the crowd. Well,
- 17:17nobody can get out of this room without passing us. That's right, Please
- 17:22Indy, Oh, something's going to happen. Yeah, it's Indy. It
- 17:27is the time for the appearance of my master, the Master rich Delby.
- 17:37Oh isn't it a beautiful figures? What a gorgeous costume. Yes, that
- 17:42is quite a costume. But that and all my friends, I am much
- 17:47pleased that you have gathered here to do me. Anna, I will say
- 17:51no more and tell you. What is impossible for me to read my crystal
- 17:55ball before all of you, But I shall be happy to conduct him.
- 17:59Vid. You are leading in a room which a charming hostess has made available.
- 18:03I want to retire now to that room. You're not going to have
- 18:10your fortune told? Are you going back to the office? Oh? For
- 18:12good? Even drop me off of the beauty parlor. Sorry, you don't
- 18:15have to cancel your appointment. Oh but Nick's beauty power is supposed to take
- 18:18years off a girl's face. Let's who We're going back to the office,
- 18:22and I'm going to add years to a girl's face and that girl is new
- 18:34heresy? Oh, I hope I don't look as funny as I feel.
- 18:40You don't you make ups? Fine? You know at least thirty five.
- 18:45That's the worst compliment I ever had. I that's to remember. Whatever happens,
- 18:51I want you to play along. And when you went to the Master's
- 18:53presence tonight, don't forget who am you supposed to be? I won't nick
- 19:00her. Here I go, and don't worry. I'll be around somewhere.
- 19:19Yes, I'd like to see rashid Al. They please, I'm missus Andrew
- 19:22Waller, Please to come in. Thank you, mins. I believe person
- 19:29head here and then she will wait in crystal room. Come please please to
- 19:37be seated here. I go now tell master thank you. You are missus
- 19:49Andro Walla, who has come to seek advice from the old seeing crystal.
- 19:56You are the holder of driver's license number seven four five ninety two, issued
- 20:00in the city eighteen days ago. Your original home was in Brightwood. But
- 20:06that's wonderful. It is wonderful only because through this power given to me,
- 20:11I am able to give help to those who come here to seek the answers
- 20:15to those things which they cannot know. So maybe you can help me.
- 20:19It's very important, very well, madam, plead to draw near look into
- 20:26the Christian Do not allow your attention to waiver for an instant, oh ball
- 20:34of ever knowing light, for into your surface the future of the one who's
- 20:41seeksty answers to questions as yet unknown. The war begins to clear picture,
- 20:48responding, I can see you, madame. You are wondering about a man.
- 20:53The man is nearly thirty five years of age. He's over six feeture,
- 21:00good looking. He's engaged in a very dangerous occupation. His name is
- 21:06Nick Well it looks as though next plan to have Patsy disguise herself as an
- 21:18older woman and gather evidence in russiad Aale Bay's apartment has backfired. In a
- 21:22moment, we'll hear the conclusion of this adventure. Now back to the conclusion
- 21:33of the case of the Crystal prophecy, the day's adventure with Nick Carter,
- 21:36brought to you by old Dutch Clinton. And as we returned to the story,
- 21:40Rassidale Bay says, if you'll move, I said, refers to you
- 21:42this gun. You were very foolish to come here, my dear young spy.
- 21:48How did you know who I was? A very regrettable mistake on your
- 21:52part. You were careful to place for his documents in your purse, but
- 21:56you also left the real one in it, your appointment at the beauty parlor
- 21:59in your real name. Yes, and now I find it necessary to dispose
- 22:03of you. She wouldn't Dare you know what Nick will get you for if
- 22:07it's a last thing he does. If Nick Kutter tries to get me,
- 22:11it will be the last thing he ever does. Much too skilled in the
- 22:15art of having people commit suicide, because by a mere detective even a detective
- 22:18of mister Katter's reputation, and did kill those women. Of course, my
- 22:22dear, why how they done to you? They were stubborn. They refused
- 22:26to pay to keep from committing suicide, so they did kill themselves as I
- 22:33rage, Oh, Hassan, Haddan, Yes, Master, I ketch up,
- 22:38I was in the real Master. Take this girl out of the car.
- 22:42I will join you. This boy and is going to commit suicide if
- 22:47you're making a mistake. Nick knows all about you and what you're doing.
- 22:49I doubt that, but even so it will do no good. You are
- 22:53on your way to your grain. Now, Hassan, take it away.
- 22:59You know what a door has. I am good. That's the first time
- 23:08you ever rang that gong with your head. It is O golly, I
- 23:15thought you were, Hassan. That's what you're supposed to think. Now,
- 23:18I'll just rip off the master's hoarse whiskers so that when Sergeant Madison gets here,
- 23:23it can book him for murder under his real name, Robert Winter.
- 23:34Oh, I tell you, sergeant, I was never so glad to hear
- 23:38a Nick's voice, but it was certainly queer to hear it coming from the
- 23:41man I thought was, Hassan, how'd you do with me? I told
- 23:45Patsy I had to stick close for Maddie. Was the only way I could
- 23:48manage it. When I got into the apartment, knocked out Hassan and that
- 23:52did a quick change so I could pass for him. But you certainly looked
- 23:55like the real thing to me. I thought you were going to take me
- 23:56out and boil me and oil You know I wouldn't do that to you.
- 24:00Oh me, tell me, how did you know that Elbay and Robert Winter
- 24:04were the same man you were a part of responsible for the huh? I
- 24:08was, yes, I don't you remember your set? His spats were enough
- 24:11to convict him as far as you were concerned. Yes, well, that
- 24:15is convict him. When the fake l Bay appeared at Missus Huntington's party,
- 24:18he made the mistake of wearing his spats under his robe. I caught a
- 24:22glimpse of well, I'll be darned. Of course, Missus Langdon gave us
- 24:27a lot of help by grabbing up that invitation once she knew she was dying.
- 24:30I was calling attention to the party where I could find Lbay and his
- 24:33pets, so Robert Water would advise these women to consult l Bay and then
- 24:40as Elbay, he would tell them they were going to commit suicide unless they
- 24:42paid him off. That's right, Huh, they paid, they were all
- 24:45right, but if they refused, who killed them? As a listen to
- 24:48the other Sonny, that's right, Maddie. Oh that truths that no one
- 24:52should ever believe the things that are I seen in the Crystal Ball. Will
- 25:04Nick, how about a few advanced hints about the adventure Old Dutch Clinger is
- 25:07going to bring us next week or Bob? Before I tell you about next
- 25:11week's adventure, I want to remind our listeners that the Red Cross is carrying
- 25:14on in peace, just as in war. In any disaster flood, tornado,
- 25:18hurricane, or epidemic, you'll find the Red Cross on hand with shelter,
- 25:22food, clothing, and medical care. But this is just part of
- 25:26the story of the activities of the Red Cross. So it's no wonder that
- 25:29the Red Cross needs funds. And I want to urge everyone to give and
- 25:33to give generously to the Red Cross, and I'm sure they will. Nick.
- 25:36It's all my but no Nick about next week's adventure. Okay, Bob,
- 25:38I'll give you a few highlights. A man telephoned me greatly excited about
- 25:42a discovery just made, and before Nick could get any details, the man
- 25:45had hung, which made me curious. And from then on we got mixed
- 25:48up with red pencil lines and a phone book, a list of perfume,
- 25:52shocks, a junkyard, a trip to sea in a crowded barge, and
- 25:56webs. Patsy say something for next week the story Nick, I call it
- 26:00the Case of the Smuggles Perfume. Nick carter Master Detective is presented each week
- 26:14at this time and over these same stations by the Cuddy Packing Company, makers
- 26:18of Old Dutch cleanser. Remember when you go shopping tomorrow, get the cleanser
- 26:22preferred by more women in America than any other Old Dutch cleanser. Nick Carter

- 26:42Smith Publications Incorporated. Lon Clark is starred as Nick, with Charlotte Manson featured
- 26:48as Patsy. Matt He is played by Ed Latimer. Today's script was written
- 26:52by Charles Stubblefield. Original music is played by George Wright. This program is
- 26:57fictional and ed of his semblance to actual persons living or dead. Is plenty
- 27:03of coincidental. This is Bob Mike was saying when minutes come, use old
- 27:07Dutch glen there. This is the neutral broadcasting system. Welcome back. It
- 27:25is so easy to be the master of disguise over radio. Nick Carter's a
- 27:29regular, mister chameleon. That's just a throwaway to those of you who've been
- 27:33listening to us for a long time. And remember a two episode story we
- 27:37did. You can check that out at archives dot Great Detectives dot net.
- 27:42Seriously, I did love the fliffhanger where he revealed the name of Nick Carter
- 27:48right before they went into the break. Of course, he suffered from a
- 27:52lot of the big problems of radio criminals and those that get caught is just
- 28:00this overall arrogance and desire to keep on pushing their luck. And of course
- 28:07it really wasn't necessary for him to kill Patsy since she hadn't actually discovered anything.
- 28:12In fact, if he had just pretended to be a true swamy prophet,
- 28:18then he could realize Nick Carter was on his case move on to another
- 28:21city because Patsy had literally uncovered nothing. Though, of course we knew who
- 28:25did it from very early. What I liked about this story is wasn't so
- 28:29much the who, but the how, as well as the how catch them
- 28:33that we would figure out. I thought that in solution there had a kind
- 28:37of a nice twist. I should misstion that there were some lost episodes since
- 28:44the last program. Some of the ones that were missing the case of the
- 28:52Significant Seed, the case of the Call Losso Cave, the case of the
- 28:55Single Addition, the case of the hit and run hot Out, and the
- 28:59case of the Seagull Wig and the case of the self convicted Crook. So
- 29:04a lot of episode lost episodes in this nineteen forty seven series. All right,
- 29:10Well, now on to some listener comments and feedback, and we begin
- 29:14with Aaron, who says, I'm watching Old Perry Mason on DVD and detected
- 29:18the unmistakable voice of Virginia greg in an episode from season one. I wasn't
- 29:23looking at the screen at the time, but when I heard that voice,
- 29:26I knew who it was. I looked on IMDb and they listened her in
- 29:30four episodes between nineteen fifty eight and sixty five. It was interesting to put
- 29:36a face to the voice, and I will be on the lookout for her
- 29:37and other old TV shows. I know other listeners of your podcast will want
- 29:41to watch out for her. Thanks so much for that email from New York.
- 29:48And certainly if you want to watch Virginia Greg, You've got a wide
- 29:53variety of television programs to choose from. Can find her in. Programs include
- 30:00Policewoman, The Waltons, Emergency, Adam Twelve, Ironside. It's just an
- 30:07incredible number of programs and so many she played different characters, and now sometimes
- 30:14you really have to look for her because the roles are not always big,
- 30:21and it can't when you're playing a character actress. It can almost be like
- 30:26playing when you're doing a score, because there are certain productions where what makes
- 30:32the music so good is that you don't even think about it, but it
- 30:37creates that atmosphere, and it can be the same with a lot of these
- 30:40character roles. She took on its an incredible amount of credits, and really
- 30:45through the nineteen sixties and seventies very active, slowed down a little bit in
- 30:51the eighties, mostly did TV movies and she did some voice work. Out
- 30:59an incredible legacy and incredible resume, and thanks so much for sharing. Also
- 31:04had a comment on our Big List of detective old time radio shows in Christie
- 31:11ces, I'm interested in Blackstone the Magic Detective mostly out of curiosity. Well,
- 31:18Christie, thanks so much. That was a program I hadn't listed,
- 31:21one way or another on my list of the big list of radio detective shows
- 31:26for our list, shows that I intend to do, shows that I'm not
- 31:30going to do, and an ever dwindling number of programs that I haven't heard
- 31:34enough to make up my mind one way or another. But regarding Blackstone Magic
- 31:40Detective, I'll add that, and I'll be sure to add it under the
- 31:42no column. But I'll go ahead and give some information on the series.
- 31:47It was a nineteen forty nine to fifty syndicated series that was syndicated by a
- 31:53mutual among its various networks, and the way the series would work would be
- 31:59there an introductory portion we would hear about a mystery, and then Blackstone the
- 32:05Magician would explain a magic trick. Now, there were two big flaws with
- 32:09the seriy. Number one, and this is the biggest one, is that
- 32:14it was a quarter hour sering. The episodes in existence are twelve to thirteen
- 32:19minutes long to leave time for commercials. So you have a twelveteen thirteen minute
- 32:24story and it's self contained, and when you're doing an introduction and a magic
- 32:30trick and a conclusion, that leaves a very little time for an actual mystery.
- 32:37The second problem that keeps me from enjoying the series is the magic trick
- 32:43portion of the show itself. Now I like magic tricks, but I like
- 32:46to see them. Magic tricks over the radio just don't work for them,
- 32:50particularly when they're trying to build our excitement by having his friends go ooh,
- 32:58oh, that's an amazing trick, mister Blackstone. There are just some things
- 33:01that to me really don't work on the radio. The two things that occur
- 33:06to me are illusionists and answers. The visuals are just so important, and
- 33:12even with just a thirteen minute running time, it really lost my attention.
- 33:15But it's out there, and certainly you may have a different opinion on it.
- 33:22But it was a series I just couldn't get into. But thanks for
- 33:25bringing it up, Christy. It's certainly fun to at least talk about.
