- 0:04SPEAKER_00: This is the Mostly Football Show, a uniquely Australian take on the NFL and all things in the world of sport.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Over to you, Pete.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, wherever you are in the wide world.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Mostly Football Show.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: The Vikings, yes, the Vikings, are the only undefeated team left.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: The Chiefs go down, as do the 49ers, and Dallas surprises the world by kicking somebody's ass.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: I'm joined this week by KG.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: It's KG and me.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, holding down the fort.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: We're missing you, Matt.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: We're missing you.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Look, look uh uh slightly because he would have probably been a bit smug about the Bears just get getting over the top of the Patriots.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: And I I don't know how they manage it, but getting a whole bloody ten days between games as they play on Monday night.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: So I'm sure there should be some kind of scheduling because the Packers are back up on Friday morning.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: So what is happening?
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we'll see how we go.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: But let's start um this week.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Let's start with the Monday night football game.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: Uh Dallas, 38 to 21 winners over uh the Phillies.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: The Eagles, Javante Williams had himself a day, 155 rushing yards.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: Scary.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: Uh are you full ball now?
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Back on back on the playoff bandwagon?
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: No, no, I don't think I've bought in yet.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: But look, we we uh faced a team who's got some injuries, obviously, quarterback being the the biggest gap.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: And we still struggled on defense, and I think that's really still the you know the the thing that stands out.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Now, this kind of harkens back to last year, where if we're in a shootout, we're gonna win, and we did that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: So we we we were able to outpace them ultimately, and and again, it was more a symptom of some missing players on the Eagles side.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: You know, when you when you're missing a Jalen Hurts, you you really suffer from that.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: So I think that I'm ecstatic for a win because I did not see the game, but I did not want to see the score.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: And so I I went to the NFL.com to watch the replay, and I was yeah, I was pleasant pleasantly surprised that we we held out because it at the beginning it looked like we were back and forth, like you know, they were going to basically hold us to the fire, and it could be either way, but ultimately I guess we outpaced them when it comes to offense.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: And so we pulled out a W, which I'm excited by, but you know, I'm not I'm not too excited at this point.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's understandable, right?
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: You go to three and four.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Uh so so and that has you in second place in your division.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I know how.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know how.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: And that's the thing, right?
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: And you're chasing the Giants.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm gonna be saying a little smug that I did predict the Giants might be a little bit of a sleep sleek this year.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: But they they won again.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: They won again, uh, beating the Texans in overtime.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: And and they're one of those teams who, again, has some injuries, but still, you know, pulling it all together, which I I have to commend them.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: I I think that's where you start to see some some maturity in teams and their coaching that actually shows that you know kind of ability to flex and move with whoever's on the field and and creating a system versus looking at uh specific players.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: So it's impressive.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: It it is, yeah.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: And that's a really good show, actually.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: But I I think uh and we've we've touched on it in the last couple of weeks, um I think they've just been smart in getting JJ McCarthy.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Once once Jack Jackson Dart was gone for the season, they they have the choice to stick with who they got or or make an early trade.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: And I guess Joe Flacco wasn't available, so um JJ McCarthy got on board.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: So you know, I think the the Viking system must must have something alright.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: But if you're if you're Philly uh you're a an Eagles fan or a Phillies fan right now, you're probably looking at this and going, Well, why didn't we do that?
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, the Jalen Hurts has been out a couple of weeks, so they had the opportunity to and and I think Matt and I uh a few weeks ago something like a fifth round draft pick was all they gave up to get it.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: And it's like uh yeah and I know he's he's not a starter in this, but but he's got starting experience.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: It it's uh I mean, like it or not, we haven't heard our favourite uh uh Cleveland Browns quarterback at all the name this year, but he does have starting experience if if if you're looking for a starter.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Um he doesn't have a lot this year, he in fact doesn't have any this year, but uh and not likely to get it either with uh Cleveland flying high.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: No, that's right.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: They're actually in a position where they want to be.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: So they're not in the you know last year's position where they were just you know basically juggling quarterbacks.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: They didn't care, they were giving everybody a go.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Um this this year.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: I think they they've settled and you know it it's showing because yeah, they're they're looking solid, like uh like I did not expect.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: So yeah, well done.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Yes, so so let's uh let's touch on our two now defeated teams.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Um we've been glazing the 49ers a lot over the last uh few weeks.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah um 29-20 they lost to Atlanta.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Um Atlanta have been hot, then cold, then hot, then cold, and I guess they caught them on a on a hot week uh because four turnovers um and if you're gonna turn over the ball four times in a game, you're gonna find it really hard to win at the end of the day.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think that's the the NFL as it is today.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: You know, you you you really can't survive that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: And as good as the 49ers is uh the 49ers are, the the ability to survive four turnovers, that's almost impossible.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: So they still were close, we're really close unexpectedly with with that kind of ratio.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I I think that's where Atlanta really took advantage.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: And I have to take my hat off to them because you know some teams still don't take advantage of that, and and but they did, and they were able to capitalize actually on a couple of the turnovers, which was great.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, and and you know, they got turned over quite comfortably by Chicago uh a couple of weeks back.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Uh and then the weeks before that, they just absolutely destroyed Green Bay.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: So it's when you're you're prepping for a game and you're playing Atlanta, you've got to work out which one is turning up.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Can can can the real Michael Penix Jr.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: please stand up.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: Who is gonna show up and uh what am I gonna expect this week?
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a that's a a fair question.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: So uh let's uh let's stick in the in the NFC.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: So so one undefeated oh no, actually, let's not let's let's talk about the other uh team that that tasted defeat, but quite a worse defeat.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Seattle.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Patrick Mahomes threw for just 165 yards in the Chiefs' loss to Seattle.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: Uh Sam Dahl didn't set the world alight, but three points for a Kansas City offense.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, has the bubble burst.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: It was certainly unexpected.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: So this is one where I just saw the highlights and I just, you know, um it looked like they were handled, like easily, like handled the whole game.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: And I was like, wow, that's a you know, again, unexpected.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: I thought this was going to be a shootout between the two teams.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: I expected that there would be high scores and we'd be talking about someone, you know, inching out by three points after, you know, a 40 to you know, 41 to you know, something score, but it definitely wasn't that.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: It actually felt like uh Mahomes was off, not just the team, but he was off, you know.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Uh uh and and I guess it it it to me it could be just something as simple as Kenneth Walker III had spent so long at Seattle they just knew how to stop him.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: True true.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: They face him on the practice squad, they know what to do.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: So so he played for them all last season, right?
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Won their MVP Super Bowl.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: I think they knew where the threat was coming from.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Um I I I also think that he's been so good at the start of the season.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: So good that they're gonna start playing teams like Seattle now.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: They're gonna start playing they've got Denver, I think, this week, which is obviously a divisional game.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: The teams are looking at Kenneth Walker to how do we stop him, not how do we stop Mahomes.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: So so I think what the Chiefs really need to do now is realise they've they've got to establish the dual threat now, which is they've got to get the passing game back up and going, they've got to be hitting the receivers because more and more defenses are gonna get ready for uh Walker running it, time after time after time after time.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: So he's been able to make hay while the sun was shining.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Um but but let's let's see how they do against Denver.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you've got a great point, and and the fact is that they have really enjoyed the honeymoon period of having a a super uh talented run threat that maybe people weren't exactly expecting to you know hit the ground running like it did.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: And you know, if if people start to key on that, does Mahomes have enough support?
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: Do they have enough you know additional weapons to kind of counterbalance if if people do shut down the run?
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: That's that's a great point.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that exactly right.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: And and what's also good is that they haven't kind of yet succumbed to the the Travis Kelsey retirement tour.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: I know it's uh it it it's a it's a good chance, and I I should of course remind you that it was National Tight End Day this weekend again.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I did not know.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: Second year in a row that uh Tucker Craft has has got a touchdown on National Tight End Day.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: But uh the the Chiefs are not falling into that uh let's go to the old tropes, let's play the old tunes and see where we get to.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Um or just trying to pad up someone's stats to to make his retirement look really good.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: And and I think that's to their credit, but they're now gonna have to start to have a few more people like him step up and and take some of the workload uh going forward.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: It will be interesting to see what uh the type of play calling that goes on with Andy Reid next uh next week.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, I I I would I would suggest that they're one of the best bounce back teams.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: Now, you know, again, they've they've got some some real challenges this year, we know that, but they are well coached and they usually bounce back pretty well.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: So I would expect that they'll come out all guns blazing next week, but let's see.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: Let's see if if they can make those adjustments.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Uh and uh, you know, being six and one's not a bad position.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: So I'll be I'll be pretty happy with that.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: Um however, there is one team that is six and oh, and that is the awful Minnesota Vikings.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: I like how you say awful at six-o.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Uh to me would there's two big mysteries in the NFC this this year.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: One is how the hell are Minnesota 6-0, and the other is when when the hell is Mika Parsons going to actually play again.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Um but but 6-0.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: And I know this should just been easier.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: I know they were just playing the Colts and all of that because of where they finished Philip finishing bottom of the division last year.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: But they've beaten the Bears, they've beaten the Packers, they've got the Lions up next next week.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: They're not winning the games by with their offense.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: It's their defense that is ruling the roost.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and that has been the most surprising to me.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: I've never once talked about the Vikings as being a defensive powerhouse.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: No, exactly.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: And uh that's how they're winning, right?
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: They're not scoring a lot.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: I think I read something that said uh for a 6-0 team, they are the lowest scoring 6-0 team since 19, you know, some odd.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: But but here they are, 6-0.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: And you'd have to, you know, even though the stats don't necessarily put them number one everywhere, their defense is obviously holding teams to account and just doing enough to have them, you know, top some some really good teams.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: So it's it's it's more I I would say a mystery than anything to me, because I I just can't, even at this point in the seven season, give them a whole bunch of credit.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: No, it's it it it it is I don't know why.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: I just can't.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Frustratingly annoying.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, two seasons ago when they went four 14 and 3 and and you were thinking, oh, the these guys are going to be threatening forever, and then and they just gave Sam Darled away because they thought he wasn't really up to it, and he of course he won the Super Bowl last year.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: So um yeah, Kyler Murray is not that great a quarterback.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: He's ah he's mobile, right?
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: He's mobile, but he did nothing for the Cardinals.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: It's just uh well, it it is what it is, right?
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: You you they've beaten the six teams they've put in front of them, one of them's been my team, the Green Bay Packers.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: They scored 39 points on us.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: So you know, just think about how low they've scored in the other five games, because uh nearly a third of their points came in one game.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Yes, that's interesting.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Um I I I don't know what the secret sauce is.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: I I really just haven't watched enough of their tapes, but I can tell you this that you know, looking at their I guess upcoming schedule, they've got some tough teams ahead.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: So I suspect, and you know, I don't want to wish them, you know, bad, but against the Lions, against the Bills, back against the Packers, the 49ers, all one after the other.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: If they stay undefeated through that run, then I'm going to have to give them fun.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: It's just gonna have to send them all the fl the flowers.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: And and what watch them crash out in the playoffs and be one and done.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: So so so uh we're getting towards the halfway season.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: So let's look at the continue to look at the NFC.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Um so if if the season finished today, the Vikings would be the number one seed, followed by the 49ers, the Giants would qualify, um, and so would the Carolina Panthers with a three and three record, then the three wild card positions would be the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions, and the Green Bay Packers.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: So you'd have the entire NFC North if the season were today.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Season finished today.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: They're followed by uh the Seahawks, who are also four and three, but uh Green Bay holds the tiebreaker over them.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: The Falcons are on three and four, the Rams are on three and four, they got over the Raiders um this week.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: So is that the turning point now?
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Uh are the Rams gonna come back?
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Ooh, that's that's a tough one with the Rams because if you if you look at it on paper, they should.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: They should, you know, they they've got an all-star cast uh with or without Adams, right?
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: And I I suspect that if they can uh get one or two in, they will start to believe again.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: It's a fair question.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: I I'm not sure at this point if they can make a run strong enough with their division to, you know, kind of make up the difference of uh of the slow start that they've had.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Well, y you could be right, but the wild card is every chance, right?
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Uh and I guess if you're in a division with the the Seahawks and the 49ers, a wild card is as good a place as any.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: So so you've already given up probably too much ground to the 49ers already.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: You're three games back on them.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: You've only got ten more games in the season.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: So that means you've they've got to lose four and you've got to win four.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: So uh and can't say the 49ers losing another four three games, let alone four.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Um so let's jump over to the AFC.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: So there if again, if the season finished today, uh Kansas City Chiefs would c qualify, the Buffalo Bills would qualify, the Cleveland Browns would also qualify five and two.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Um and the Jaguars would qualify as the the leaders of the of each division.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: The wildcards would be filled by the Denver Broncos who are five and two, the Pittsburgh Steelers who are five and two, and then the Cincinnati Bengals, who are four and two.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: So they would all be shutting out the Patriots and the Ravens, who are both four and three, and obviously the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Uh Rory, if you're listening, there is still a mathematical chance you will reach uh the the playoffs, but only a mathematical chance as you've gone from three and oh to three and four.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: So um uh apart from the Browns, and we should probably talk about the Browns, and I should probably apologize for my uh preseason prediction of them, apart from the Cleveland Browns, I'm finding the Pittsburgh Steelers also at five and two quite a remarkable story this year.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: I I haven't seen any of their full games, but I I've just kind of watched them, you know, kind of slowly, methodically get into a groove.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, they've won their last three, so they've definitely found something that they feel like is the right formula.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: But like you, I I'm still a little bit shocked that we're talking about, even at this point, I know it's still kind of early, but that, you know, it's between them and the Browns.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: You know, what happened to the Ravens?
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: What happened to my Bengals, who I thought that, you know, um, you know, did a great job in the offseason.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: And it's it's they're only a game or so out, but I just I just think it's an interesting time because it's just not what I expected in this year.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, and look, uh the the Baltimore have been missing Lamar Jackson for three weeks, so the fact they're still in there at 4-3, but they were absolutely smashed by the the your Bengals um 35-13.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: So Joe Joe Burrow finally uh got his act together, four second half touchdown passes.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: This is the kind of offense we were expecting them from the start of the season.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Um and and again, this uh second week in a row that uh Ravens were 13-nil up and then didn't go on to score any more points.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: So that's tough actually.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: We we used to talk about that in high school, right?
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: Because you you've got a great, you know, kind of game plan, right?
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Meaning you've you've got those first three or four or five drives just mapped out.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: You know exactly what you're gonna do, you know every play that you're gonna run, and you know, if this happens, these things happen.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: But it's kind of exposing a weakness, right?
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Is you know, when um you get past those those first few drives and you've done that score, you know, how are you going to adjust to what the other team is doing and how they've adjusted?
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: And I'd say that's what's what's happening with the with the Ravens is you know, they've they've got you know some great strategy to start them off.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: But when you a couple weeks in a row, you know, get up and you know, get those scores in, but don't continue the uh the scoring, continue the momentum, then something's gone wrong with your ability to adjust.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: And exactly.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: I'd I'd I'd be looking at the coaching saying, Well, what do we do after that that first you know play card list is gone?
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Uh there's uh Mike Tyson who said everyone's got a plan until get punched in the face, right?
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: So once they had the punch in the face, what happens?
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: And it's interesting to see as well.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's a there's a big thing this year, and uh got to give credit to Minnesota, it kind of started with them and and their blueprint of the game they had against the Packers to open the season, which is on third and long you bring in the house.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: And if you can't get off a pass um quickly, then your your third and longs are gonna be all day long just just snuffed out.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: And more and more teams.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: And more and more teams around the league are doing it.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: I'm also starting to see the pattern where they're looking like they're going to do it and they're not doing it.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: So so quarterbacks are really gonna have to start thinking.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: About do I need to get this off quickly?
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: What happens if I don't?
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: What should I do?
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: All that good stuff.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: So I there's gonna be a lot of quarterbacks that earn a lot of their money over the course of the season.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Well, while while we're in the AFC, then let's let me uh formally apologise to the Cleveland Browns.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Uh for those of you who uh heard our prediction show, uh my prediction and setting for the Cleveland Browns lasted about 30 seconds.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Um they have well and truly proven me wrong.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: They sit atop the AFC North with a 5-2 record.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Amazingly.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: So they have the lead over the Steelers on the whatever the tie break is.
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: I think they might beating the Steelers.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: That might be why they've got there.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Um Are we going to see a surprise appearance in the playoffs from the Cleveland Browns?
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: And uh the supplementary question to that is will they then shit the bed and still draft another quarterback?
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: That is a fair question.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: Probably still draft another quarterback because they tend to do that and they probably don't want to jinx themselves at this point if they make the playoffs.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we do it every year.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: So I have So why stop now?
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, look, uh I'm still not quite a believer, so I don't suspect that this Cleveland team that we see early in the season will last the test of time.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: And uh I I know that, you know, I'm probably leaning on history with the likes of the Steelers and Bengals and and Ravens, but I suspect that those teams, even though they've got much tougher schedules than the Browns, I'd I'd have to say, will still uh find a way to kind of claw their way to the top and leave Cleveland at least at the bottom middle, if not at the bottom this year.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: So uh either way, they've they they've definitely surprised us all.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: So they have to be really excited by what they've been able to build, but will it last?
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: I can't see it.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you know, if if you if you're a Cleveland brand fan, uh please enjoy it while you can.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Uh they are uh they are playing Pittsburgh uh this coming week.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: So that's gonna show a real test of character for them.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: And I have to say they haven't, you know, been playing pushovers, right?
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: They've already played the Steelers once and beat them.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: So if they beat them again, then I'll you know start to lean towards the other side and say that maybe they've they've got something.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: But a little bit of what they've been able to do, I think, has been that element of surprise and you know, people not expecting that, not giving them the you know, kind of the um uh I'll say respect that they deserve, and they've been able to probably take advantage of that.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: But I think at this point in the season, teams have to stand up and notice, and I think that puts a little bit of a target on their back, and let's see if they can hold out.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: If they do, then I'll have to um you know give them.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: You'll have to apologize.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: I'll just have to apologize as well.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: But uh right now I I'm still not a believer.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: But let's let's see.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's only uh uh the dreadful cardinals who are living up to my scant amount of t time I gave them.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Yay Cardinals.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: There are two more uh teams that we should talk about.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: One I will uh wait because I may get on a soapbox and rant about the state of refereeing for the second week in a row, but we should bow down to Jeff Hafley and Malik Willis, who got Miami their first win of the season.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Woop whoop uh the uh over the Jets.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Uh and I thought the Jets were had been playing quite well this season, so that is a big win at uh at the Jets as well.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: So uh 28-25.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: So uh congratulations, Jeff.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Congratulations, Malink, well done.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Hopefully you'll you'll get a couple more wins before the the end of the year and not be sacked horribly and given a chance to kind of build something while you're down there.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's hope.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, deep breaths, everyone.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: One game we haven't talked about was the daylight robbery.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: Uh I tell you what, it's a good job the referees wear stripey jumpers because that was a real stripey jumper job.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: That was uh absolute robbery of a game taken away from from the Greenbow Packers.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: The first quarter I thought it was going to be like 52-45 at the end of it.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: Something like uh 284 yards in in the first quarter alone in terms of passing, and Jared Goff and uh Jordan Love were absolutely exceptional.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: But when the game settled in, um it was just ruined.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: It was ruined.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: Oh look, and and let me put my hand up.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Green Bay missed two field goals.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Those two three goals would be six points.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Would it would have made the difference?
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: Gut game would be over.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: However, the standard of refereeing was just appalling.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: And I'm hearing through the the grapevine that the team that did the game has been suspended for this upcoming week, so that probably tells you a lot about what the NFL and NFL were feeling about it.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: Wow wow two very poor roughing the passer calls.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Um again, both on third downs, both were uh well one would have would stop the drive, but one would have um a unnecessary roughness call on Devontae White that just beggared belief as the the play hadn't stopped and he was called for unnecessary roughness and the the weakness that came out from the the report on the referee side was it was just oh it's shocking.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: I look I hate losing to Detroit, so I'm always gonna have sour grapes over this.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: But uh I don't think the best team won.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Um and I'll stand by that statement.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: And and the stripey jumpers really did a stripey jumper job on on Green Bay.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: Uh uh no, see it's the trauma that's coming back to me, Kerry.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: The trauma.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: There was an intentional grounding call on uh Jordan Love and the explanation of it afterwards, for those who don't know what intentional grounding is, I'm hoping who those who listen probably should do.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: But you uh it's when you throw the ball away and there's no receiver inside, and you're inside the pocket.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: So he was outside the pocket, there was a receiver within five yards, uh or five feet or whatever of the ball when it hit hit the ground, and he was about to be sacked.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: They called intentional grounding, and the expl explanation afterwards was the pass didn't go past the line of scrimmage.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: To which everyone looked and went, Yeah, but is that the rule?
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're in that.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Is that really the rule?
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean la last year in a game with with um the Eagles, you know, Jalen Hills just spiked the ball and they didn't call it incontentional grinding because the guy in front of him could have caught it.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: And you're like, well, hang on a minute, he's not out of the pocket.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: He wasn't even out of the pocket.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I spent a long time on Monday, which and uh yeah, thankfully not working at the moment, gave me a lot of time to moan and whinge and roan about the standard of refereeing.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: And this is again two weeks in a row I bought it up, and two weeks I've felt that my team has been hard done by.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: And you look at all the conspiracy theories about who do they want in the playoffs, where do they want them, and you see calls like that, and you go, Oh man, I don't want to bl I don't want to believe you idiots out there.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: But somebody's gonna start believing you idiots out there, eh?
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that makes me the idiot, right?
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Oh man alive.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: Man alive.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: So uh and again, we've got a short turnaround.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: So um Carolina Panthers on Friday morning, Thursday night football.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Hopefully uh we can get the job done.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: Uh Carolina had their asses handed to them by Baker Mayfield.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: Um so uh uh Tampa Bay already ruled out of playoff contention, I would imagine, but uh it's good to see Baker Mayfield back and um getting some passes and wins on the board.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, I like Mayfield.
- 30:37SPEAKER_03: Can I just say something about the the Packers and your refereeing?
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you can as long as it's supportive, Kerry.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: Uh well I'm not sure if it's gonna be supportive, but I I can say that when we first chatted about it, and you know, I was thinking Pete's gonna have a lot to say about this one.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: And but when I saw the replay, because I didn't see the full game, even the commentators were saying the same thing.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: So I sometimes I think that's just Pete, you know, thinking you know, his team is is hard done by, but I don't think you were alone.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: I think there were a lot of people looking at uh even replays and all of those things going, huh?
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: You know, what what was that?
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: And you know, have we ever heard it, you know, had that called?
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: And so I I do think there is some there's gotta be some thinking about um what do you do in these situations as the NFL?
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: You know, how do you make sure that this can't be a pattern that continues?
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: It's a tough one because they're in the moment, they're you know, going through, there's not a whole bunch of replays that you can do or you know for some of these calls.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: But some of them, you know, surely somebody's looking going, nah, yeah, what is that?
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: And you've got you've got to get the balance right.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: You don't want to uh and I know it's not a a flow of a game like soccer, right?
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: But you don't want to spend five minutes looking at every decision.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: But but what was really unusual um for me is because the it was the Devontae White one, right?
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: So so uh and I I I take the difference in two plays.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: So so the the one with Dallas last week was actually when um right at the start of the game uh where I think we're third and eight or whatever, and uh Love got about a ten, fifteen yard gain to Christian Watson.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: So he caught the pass, he went down, um three Dallas players around him, none of them touched him, he got up and started to run and then just stopped.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: And when they kind of went back through all of that, um the the comments were saying, Well, what did he stop for?
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: No one had touched him, he could have just gone and uh and he was asked about it at the end of the uh the game and he said I started to run and then the referee asked for the ball.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so so there was no whistle.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: So yeah, so somebody's uh yeah, asking like it.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: So so what he should have done is it'd done what we're all taught, um you know, having played soccer at many, many levels, yeah played at a whistle.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Um so what happened with Devontae White is uh Amon Brance or whatever his name is that plays for absolutely killed us in the backfield.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: Um so he had a really good game.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: And if we'd have stuck him down, so so we should acknowledge that.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: He had he had a catch, he had he was on three people, but his knee never hit the the the ground.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: So he got up and started to try and r run.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Uh Devon Day White saw him starting to go, so he just picked him up and threw him to the ground.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: As he threw him to his ground, his foot went up and kicked the referee in the stomach, and the referee from the ground threw the flag and when arced low, no, so the play wasn't dead, so he had the right to go on, he had the right to tackle him, and yet the flag was thrown for unnecessary roughness when it was because it was deemed to be after the play, but it can only be after the play when the whistle blows.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: And I'm looking so so the players are having a hard enough time here.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: You've got one week where a guy is saying, Well, I didn't hear the whistle, but the referee asked for the ball, and the week after you hear him go, Well, I didn't hear a whistle, so I just played on.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: At some point, which one do you do?
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, you got you've got to help the players out a bit, and it just both happened to my bloody team.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: So, yeah.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: So referees who ever, if you're listening to this, I apologize.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: I would never be a referee.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: I take my hat off to all those people who referee, and I wouldn't be a referee because I know what an arse I can be when I'm playing soccer or anything like that, to the referee himself.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: So so I appreciate what you do because uh actually we can't have a game without you.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: But don't keep picking on my team.
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: Don't keep it.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: That's all I'm saying.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Just do it properly.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: Do it properly.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Simple as that.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's that easy.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: All right, let's uh let's uh let's take a look at next week's games.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: We've already spoken about Green Bay and Carolina um coming on Friday morning.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: Uh big game with Lamar Jackson coming back on Sunday.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, coming back, okay.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: He is coming back or is is on schedule to come back.
- 35:35SPEAKER_02: The Buffalo Bills will be going to Highmark Stadium.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: So that could be a big game uh 5 a.m.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: on Monday morning for us.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: Uh your cowboys.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: You're at the Bird Sheet Cardinals.
- 35:53SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, what happens with the Cowboys?
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: You know what happens.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: And you um you play a team that you're supposed to to beat, and what do you do?
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: You lay an egg.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: So I I don't really look forward to this game because it, you know, I'd rather us play somebody who's a contender, and we can at least you know get up for the game.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: So let's hope we don't lay the egg like we typically do, but at least on on paper we should win.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: You should.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: And with uh the giant the giants having a buy this week, it's a chance to get uh a game back on them, right?
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: So big o big opportunity, big opportunity for for Dallas.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: Um we've talked about the Steelers and the Browns, that's gonna be interesting.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Um Steelers are$1.53 favourites at the moment, but it is at uh Acresure Stadium, so we'll see how that goes.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: The Lions play the Vikings, that's about 50-50 to me.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: I I'd like to think the Lions can uh get the rubber the green and the referee calls again to see how they go.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: Um Kansas City Chiefs at the Denver Broncos.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: How are you feeling about that one?
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: Look, I was really high on the Broncos at at the you know onset of the season.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: I know they've got great coaches, I know they've got a great team.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: I still think they'll do well, but like I said before, the Chiefs bounced back so solidly.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: I can't see them getting over the Chiefs.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: I I think they're gonna continue their struggles this week, unfortunately, for the Broncos, but I think it'll be a good game still.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, look, I hope so.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: Uh Bo Nicks has has not been set in the world a lot this year.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: He's he's not throwing too many long passes, a lot of short game.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Uh being played as short can be effective, but uh it can also be very, very tiring for your team to to not have those big games gains in there.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: So oh yeah, I I tend to be with you on that.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: I think uh I think the Chiefs is probably gonna have enough uh this week.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: And uh then the big game is Monday night football with Seattle and the Bears.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, yes, yes.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: So so the Matt's not here, so we can just talk shit about the Bears if you want.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: That's uh that that that that's it's uh it's at Lumen Field.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: Um let me let me say the positive things about the Bears to start with.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Positive is that uh Caleb's back uh because the 49ers are on a break.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: That means we've got a quarterback that can score points for in our fantasy team.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: That's my positive thought about the bears.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Positive.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: So we we're gonna get some points in the way.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: We'll come back to the the fantasy team uh shortly.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: But uh Lumenfield, uh Bears Seattle.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Ooh, that's interesting.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: That's a tough one.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: It's a tough one.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: Which which way would you go?
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: I'll I'll I'll push it to you first and then I'll tell you my my thinking.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: I I think it's gonna be a little bit like the game against the Patriots, but I think the the Seahawks will have just a little bit too much for the Bears.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Um one of the things that was uh very apparent in the Bears game, and it was very apparent when they played the Packers as well, is their defense is not very good.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: And uh if Drake May hadn't thrown a what was probably the easiest interception um that I've seen this season for for someone to pick up, it would have been a uh a much different game.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Um I don't see Sam Darnold doing that.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: I think Seattle have probably got too many tools in their box for them right now.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: That's uh that's fair.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: And and I'm gonna whisper and hope Matt doesn't hear us, but I think Seattle might take this one too.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um uh I I actually I love how the Bears are playing.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: I I love the creativity, I love the the fact that it seems like they can still move the ball at will.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: You know, even you know, say post-last season where you know it was kind of a surprise to everyone and they they were able to really put together drives uh consistently no matter what.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: They're still doing that this this year, but I think between the shootouts, um, because that's probably the only way this game will go, I think the uh Seahawks will just edge them.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: It'll be it'll be close, but they'll edge them out.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, look, uh i I think it's gonna be tough.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: I I mean, they look that Luther Burden, the third or whatever, looks like a hell of a get.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Uh I think they've probably just got to realise he's not the only other player they've got.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Uh uh and and to be fair, look, uh Colson Loveland's starting to come back into his own a little bit.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: So I I think the Bears are gonna have a better season than maybe we thought.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: This will be a good measure of how they are.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: I could say if Luther Burden they can get keep getting the ball to him.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: He's very exciting, um, but very exciting.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Players often put a target on their back.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: So we'll we'll yeah we'll see uh how all of that plays out on Monday or Tuesday morning.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: Tuesday morning.
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: On Tuesday morning morning.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Here we go.
- 41:13SPEAKER_02: Let's talk to fantasy.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Right now, um we had a blowout win this week.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: The Efers uh scored 134.22 points.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, on fire.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: We are on fire.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: We have gone to five and two in the league.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: We are we are joint top.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: Um we are the second highest scorers, and our playoff hopes, our playoff percentage is 95.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: So at five and two, we have a strong chance of making uh the playoffs that I think go down the six out of the ten teams are involved in the playoffs.
- 41:57SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: Um so it would be hard to see where we go from there.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we'll see how we go.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: It will be a bit of a challenge this week because uh our the mainstay of our team has been brought Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: They are both on a bye this week, but we will be able to bring in uh Caleb Williams and our back running back is Tony Pollard.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: Now Tony Pollard scores half the amounts of points that Christian McCaffrey does.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: But we'll see how we go.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: But uh Tony Pollard, former cowboy, not so impressed, but that's all right.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: But but but what one of our opposition uh did try and trade Drake London away from us uh this week, uh, and he wanted to give me a straight trade of George Pickens for Drake London.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: No no deal was the answer to that one.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: So yes.
