- 0:01Speaker 1: It's the Happy Family's.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Podca Merry Christmas, You're a felthy animal.
- 0:12Speaker 3: And the Oscar goes to, oh my god, seeing it here,
- 0:21Speaker 3: I know him.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Well, Christmas is just around the corner.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Have you noticed, Kylie, there's this switch between where in
- 0:28Speaker 4: one breath we're relaxed and in the next breath we're stressed,
- 0:31Speaker 4: like we're trying to slow things down because everyone's going
- 0:34Speaker 4: on holidays, but there's so much to do.
- 0:36Speaker 1: There's so much going on.
- 0:37Speaker 5: I just want to slow down. I'm not doing anything.
- 0:41Speaker 5: I'm just hoping the kids are all going to catch
- 0:43Speaker 5: up with me.
- 0:44Speaker 1: There's a favorite quote mine.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right, there's a favorite quote of mind that
- 0:49Speaker 4: and it's particularly pertinent at this point of the year
- 0:52Speaker 4: when your kids are in your arms they can't possibly
- 0:55Speaker 4: be underfoot, because a lot of parents at the moment
- 0:57Speaker 4: saying other kids is just under my feet all the time,
- 0:59Speaker 4: and I'm trying to get stuff.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And they're sitting around staring at screens and doing nothing.
- 1:02Speaker 4: We have got some solutions, by the way, I'm justin
- 1:05Speaker 4: your kilie, parents of six kids. Happy Families dot com
- 1:08Speaker 4: dot you, the Happy Families podcast is bringing you some
- 1:11Speaker 4: solutions for Christmas, Joy, Christmas Bliss. I know that not
- 1:16Speaker 4: everybody wants their kids to be watching screens all the time,
- 1:19Speaker 4: but the reality is sometimes you kind of just have
- 1:21Speaker 4: to right just to get through and keep saying.
- 1:25Speaker 5: So we've compiled, well, how do you get the presents
- 1:28Speaker 5: wrapped if they're not staring at a screen?
- 1:30Speaker 1: You got to stay up late and then you're tired
- 1:32Speaker 1: the next day and cranky.
- 1:34Speaker 4: So we have compiled a list of our top I
- 1:38Speaker 4: was going to say top five, but there's no way
- 1:39Speaker 4: we're going to. Last time we talked favorite movies, we
- 1:42Speaker 4: ended up having like poor Od Jr.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Our producer.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Instead of doing our top five movies for whatever it was,
- 1:47Speaker 4: we ended up doing like thirty. So supposedly this is
- 1:51Speaker 4: going to be our top five Christmas movies for the kids,
- 1:53Speaker 4: although I think we're going to.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Veer into some adult ones as well.
- 1:57Speaker 4: To help your family to have a happy Christmas, but
- 1:59Speaker 4: also so that you can have some peace and quiet.
- 2:00Speaker 4: The kids can be watching Christmas, everyone can be getting
- 2:02Speaker 4: into the spirit of Christmas.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Christmas music can be on.
- 2:08Speaker 4: That's where we're going today. Everyone can be baking gingerbread.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Hell, everyone, are you gonna bake ginger Grouse.
- 2:16Speaker 4: I was gonna say, how unrealistic is what I just said.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I've gone for the nostalgia, the romanticized version of what's happening.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Let's talk about Christmas.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Movies before we g rated one, before we get to
- 2:27Speaker 4: sidetrack with all that sort of stuff. Kylie, if you
- 2:29Speaker 4: were to pick your all time favorite family Christmas movie,
- 2:32Speaker 4: what would it be?
- 2:33Speaker 5: I would have, once upon a time said the Polar Express.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I wish on Stern.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Well you're coming.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Where?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Why? To the North Pole? Of course?
- 2:47Speaker 3: This is the Phola Express.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we used to love that film.
- 2:51Speaker 5: But last year, when we watched a movie a night
- 2:55Speaker 5: for each day leading up to Christmas, we got introduced
- 2:59Speaker 5: to so many new movies. And I now have a
- 3:02Speaker 5: few favorites.
- 3:03Speaker 4: By the way, just before you talk about your favorites,
- 3:05Speaker 4: I think it's worth highlighting that we took on more
- 3:08Speaker 4: than we could handle by saying let's watch one Christmas
- 3:10Speaker 4: movie each day with the kids or each night. That
- 3:13Speaker 4: was exhausting. I couldn't stand it. It was just too
- 3:16Speaker 4: much TV and too many things to do. Anyway, we
- 3:19Speaker 4: did it, and now you've got a whole new list
- 3:20Speaker 4: of favorites.
- 3:22Speaker 5: And we can thank our staff for that because they
- 3:24Speaker 5: actually introduced us to a couple that have now become
- 3:26Speaker 5: literally my top three.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Okay, so number one, I'm going to say Klaus.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Mister Klaus, you have a gift you were meant from
- 3:36Speaker 3: making toys.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, okay, so that's a Netflix special.
- 3:41Speaker 2: You know the.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Background behind Klausse. But because it was such an untraditional story,
- 3:47Speaker 5: DreamWorks and Disney wouldn't pick.
- 3:49Speaker 4: It up, right, So Netflix, Netflix got an unlimited budget.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Let's do whatever we want.
- 3:54Speaker 5: And I just love the take on the Christmas story
- 3:57Speaker 5: that this movie portrays.
- 3:59Speaker 4: So for those of you who have seen it, there's
- 4:00Speaker 4: a boy who's being raised by a very rich dad.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Rich dad's very cranky at the boy. It's a cartoon
- 4:05Speaker 4: by the way, because he's entitled and selfish and rich
- 4:08Speaker 4: dad owns like the postal system in their country, so
- 4:12Speaker 4: he sends his son to the most far reaching outposts.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Samehrenberg. It's labeled the saddest place on Earth, and you
- 4:20Speaker 5: see it in the depiction of the animation. Everything's just great.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Hey, what do you guys think you're doing? This is Smirnsburg,
- 4:28Speaker 1: the unhappiest police on Earth.
- 4:31Speaker 4: And there are two warring families who just hate each other.
- 4:33Speaker 4: And there is no postage service there like nobody.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Actually, no one writes a letter. Everybody hates each other.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And it's the story of how this young man, well,
- 4:43Speaker 4: it's a coming of age and it's a hero story.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He saves the town.
- 4:48Speaker 4: He becomes a person who falls in love with the
- 4:50Speaker 4: spirit of Christmas and changes everything.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It's a great movie.
- 4:53Speaker 5: My second one is going to be.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Arthur Christmas. He Phildel's Jingle Jingle Jingle Rod Time eighteen
- 5:04Speaker 1: point one four second for Housewife.
- 5:07Speaker 4: We've got a staff member, Elizabeth, who told us how
- 5:09Speaker 4: great After Christmas.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Was, and it was it was an absolute jour. I survive, please,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'll walk home.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I'll get a boat, but I am never getting back
- 5:22Speaker 4: in that crazy flying death trap ever again.
- 5:25Speaker 5: I just I loved it. Here's this kid, he's Santa Claus'
- 5:29Speaker 5: son and he just loves Christmas. But he gets in
- 5:32Speaker 5: the way, is it blutz everything, But he endsed up
- 5:36Speaker 5: actually saving Christmas this time.
- 5:38Speaker 1: What's your third one?
- 5:39Speaker 5: It's actually Evelyn's favorite elf.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Okay, people tomorrow morning to dam Santa's coming down.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Oh my god, Santa here, I know him so much fun.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I probably would never ever have watched this. It has
- 5:56Speaker 5: Will Farrell and I don't really like him very much
- 5:58Speaker 5: as an actor, and I probably wouldn't have put it
- 6:01Speaker 5: in as a kid's movie as a result of him
- 6:04Speaker 5: being in it.
- 6:06Speaker 4: He is absurd. He's absolutely ridiculously over the top absurd.
- 6:09Speaker 5: You stink.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I think you're gonna have a good Christmas like beef
- 6:13Speaker 2: and cheese.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You don't smell like Xander.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Okay, that's what makes it so delight so good. So
- 6:25Speaker 4: are there any other great kids Christmas movies that you
- 6:28Speaker 4: think we should mention?
- 6:29Speaker 1: Because that's only three. I said we were going to
- 6:30Speaker 1: do like our top five.
- 6:31Speaker 5: I don't think you can go past a Christmas movie
- 6:34Speaker 5: list without giving a mention to Home Alone.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I made my family disappear.
- 6:43Speaker 5: We all grew up with that movie, and it still
- 6:46Speaker 5: has to be on the top. I'd say top ten
- 6:49Speaker 5: movies ever.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Great slapstick comedy, and our children, even our teenagers, watch
- 6:54Speaker 4: that and laugh their heads off.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Harry, how did you take your shoe? Why the hell
- 7:01Speaker 2: you're dressed like a chicken. I'm on here, you more,
- 7:04Speaker 2: unt come and get me. You guys, give up. You're
- 7:11Speaker 2: thirsty for more.
- 7:13Speaker 5: And the last one I'm gonna mention would be Santa
- 7:15Speaker 5: Claus with Tim Allen.
- 7:16Speaker 2: What you put on a little weight? A little weight?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Does this look like a little weight to you? Wait?
- 7:22Speaker 4: Can fluctuate from you to year fluctuate You make it
- 7:26Speaker 4: sound like I'm retaining water.
- 7:28Speaker 2: I've given forty five pounds.
- 7:29Speaker 3: In a week.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Here's this guy who single handedly destroys Christmas by interrupting
- 7:36Speaker 5: Santa as he's trying to go down at chimney and
- 7:38Speaker 5: he falls off.
- 7:38Speaker 2: The roof.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Santa or tim Ellen Santa okay, and so his son
- 7:50Speaker 5: sees it all happenings. You have literally killed Christmas.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Killed Sannah.
- 7:56Speaker 5: So much fun.
- 7:57Speaker 4: After the break, we're going to talk about a hand
- 8:00Speaker 4: full of other Christmas movies that may or may not
- 8:03Speaker 4: suit the whole family, but you, as a parent might
- 8:06Speaker 4: really enjoy it.
- 8:13Speaker 5: It's the Happy Families podcast, the podcast with a type
- 8:16Speaker 5: or parent who just wants answers now and hopefully today.
- 8:19Speaker 5: We've given you a few options to keep the kids occupied,
- 8:23Speaker 5: so you can do your.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Sentering if that's necessary.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Wink quink.
- 8:28Speaker 4: So there's a couple of movies that we didn't mention
- 8:30Speaker 4: that I think need an honorable recognition. The first one
- 8:34Speaker 4: is Christmas Chronicles.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Good Term and a Snow it's the following on the ground.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:45Speaker 4: You actually were putting it on your list, and I said, ah,
- 8:47Speaker 4: you know, it's not really that good.
- 8:48Speaker 5: You're a trickster. You just did it so you can
- 8:50Speaker 5: have it on yours.
- 8:51Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's not what happened.
- 8:52Speaker 4: What actually happened was that we watched the We watched
- 8:55Speaker 4: the trailer, and I was like, oh, that is a
- 8:57Speaker 4: really good movie.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I did enjoy that movie quite a lot.
- 9:00Speaker 4: And of course there are a couple of other movies
- 9:02Speaker 4: that again Christmas confession. Not only have I not seen
- 9:04Speaker 4: The Santa Clause, I haven't seen Bad Center, what about
- 9:07Speaker 4: The Rain Deer?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Would you please shut up about Reindeer? And I haven't
- 9:11Speaker 1: seen The Holiday.
- 9:12Speaker 5: You're not Irish, or if you are, I'm much dronger
- 9:15Speaker 5: than I realized.
- 9:16Speaker 4: But everybody says that those must watch grown up movies
- 9:20Speaker 4: for Christmas, So.
- 9:21Speaker 5: I guess we're going to have a few movie nights then.
- 9:24Speaker 4: I still don't know if I want to watch them,
- 9:25Speaker 4: to be honest, but everyone's been saying, you've got to
- 9:27Speaker 4: talk about those movies.
- 9:28Speaker 1: They are amazing.
- 9:28Speaker 4: So we've talked about them even though we haven't seen them.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Is that cheating, That's so cheating.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Seriously, I hope you don't get in trouble you don't
- 9:35Speaker 5: even know what's in them.
- 9:37Speaker 4: On top of that, though, I think we've got to acknowledge, well,
- 9:39Speaker 4: Christmas is not a time of faith for everybody.
- 9:43Speaker 1: There are a lot of people.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Who listen to the podcast, and there are millions upon millions,
- 9:46Speaker 4: tens of millions of people around the world who do
- 9:48Speaker 4: have a religious faith. And there are some really wonderful,
- 9:51Speaker 4: religiously oriented faith producing, faith promoting movies about the Nativity.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Different churches have them.
- 9:57Speaker 4: They're available online, they're often free, and will link to
- 10:01Speaker 4: a couple of those in our show notes for those
- 10:03Speaker 4: who are interested in some nice Nativity movies and things
- 10:07Speaker 4: that will help you to have the actual Christmas story
- 10:10Speaker 4: sand Santa, no Sander in these ones instead the religious
- 10:15Speaker 4: foundations of where Christmas comes from.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And I think that sometimes it's nice to just pause
- 10:20Speaker 1: and say this is.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Meaningful, even if it's not your religious faith, to talk
- 10:23Speaker 4: to the kids about what the background is. Find one
- 10:24Speaker 4: of the short ones, the ten or twenty minute ones
- 10:27Speaker 4: that just step through it. I think that that can
- 10:28Speaker 4: help us to appreciate what Christmas is all about for
- 10:32Speaker 4: millions and millions of people around the world. We really
- 10:35Speaker 4: hope that you've enjoyed the Happy Families podcast today and
- 10:37Speaker 4: that it's given you a little bit of inspiration or
- 10:39Speaker 4: just some nice reminiscence about how good the entertainment can
- 10:44Speaker 4: be around Christmas time. We hope that these movies inspire
- 10:47Speaker 4: you and your family to goodness and kindness and service and.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Fun for this Christmas.
