- 1:14today, but it's got a different title than last week. The episode we
- 1:18played you from nineteen forty seven was titled Murder and Mister Malone. After in
- 1:29April of nineteen forty eight, it was actually retitled as The Amazing Mister Malone.
- 1:38The initial press reports as Digital l aftp Notes said that the series was
- 1:47to be renamed John J. Malone for the Defense, which I guess still
- 1:51did not make a whole lot of sense as Malone wasn't appearing in court.
- 1:56Unfortunately, that episode we played last week was the only episode from the sixty
- 2:00six episode run of Murder and Mister Malone. And unfortunately this episode is the
- 2:10only episode we have from the first forty nine episode season of The Amazing Mister
- 2:19Malone, starring Frank Lovejoy. And we'll have a little bit more on mister
- 2:23Lovejoy after the show, but whatever you call it. And there's also a
- 2:28new routine here that we'll discuss after the show. But here now from the
- 2:37from August twenty eighth, nineteen forty eighth, the nineteenth episode of The Amazing
- 2:43Mister Malone. Cleanliness is Next to Godliness. The Amazing Mister Malone, Operator
- 3:02Operator, Get Me the Office of John J. Malone. The American Broadcasting
- 3:14Company presents The Amazing Mister Malone, an exciting half hour of mystery, created
- 3:21by Craig Rice and starring Frank Lovejoy. L o'cow is the city of Chicago,
- 3:27the time, the present, and the hero of these weekly adventures.
- 3:30The Amazing Mister Malone. Malone is the name John J. Malone, Attorney
- 3:49and counselor. Alone and tonight, I'd like to turn the spotlight on the
- 3:53old cliche cleanliness is next to Godliness. As a case in point, I
- 3:58give you Tony Milano mister Milano is one of Chicago's biggest operators. He runs
- 4:02half a dozen nightclubs in towns, and rumor has it, if you'll been
- 4:06on a little more action, mister Millano can accommodate you there too. Of
- 4:11course, to run an enterprise of this kind, he needs help, and
- 4:14that's where Georgie Kelk comes in. Kelc is his right hand man, but
- 4:17Tony never believes in letting his right hand know what his left hand is doing,
- 4:21which no doubt explains Georgie's battleman as he walks into Milano's private office with
- 4:27a nondescript little man. And so here he is. Tony is here the
- 4:32one. Yeah, Grimes, this is mister Milano. See, it's a
- 4:38great pleasure. Mister Milano. Wait, I tell my missus. You're not
- 4:42gonna tell your missus anything. Huh, this is sticky between us, Grimes.
- 4:46You know what I mean? Oh sure, mister Morano, anything you
- 4:50says to step back a little like a google fella. Uh what mister Milano
- 4:55doesn't like people breathing into his face. It sped to Germ you know what
- 5:00I mean? Oh, I'm sorry, that's okay. Did the Georgie tell
- 5:04you what I wanted? No, how could I I didn't know myself.
- 5:09I was saving it for a surprise. Mister Grimes, you're the janitor.
- 5:14The bettermore apartments, you know, Janet, I'm a superinten Oh, I'm
- 5:19terribly sorry. I mean the superintendent. You got a tenant looking there named
- 5:27Reed? You mean Jackly or you better? He's a swallow. He's a
- 5:30mister Grimes, and I was so close. Now how about you letting me
- 5:39and mister Kelke here in Jack's apartment. I couldn't do that. I know
- 5:44that won't be right. I give you a hundred bucks. All you gotta
- 5:47do is longly you pass key two hundred. All I want is the key
- 5:54for just one hour. Oh what are you going to do, mister?
- 5:59Or nothing? That will get you into trouble. You said that, I
- 6:03said that two But I'll let you chease on me. Okay, you want
- 6:09to shake it if you don't mind, let's just say it's a deal.
- 6:14Mister Milano doesn't believe in shaking hands. Oh, Jo, you know what
- 6:19I mean. Give mister calcul the key. Hey, mister Reed, that's
- 6:41all right for yourself, Tony. I don't approve of this whole idea.
- 6:45There are a lot of things I don't approve of Georgia, but I don't
- 6:47let them make me unhappy. See if there's anything in the days. Hey,
- 7:00hey, will you take a look at this? You got something?
- 7:02Yes? Indeed, Jack obviously doesn't believe in banks. I bet it's close
- 7:08to the twenty g's in his bundle. Put them back. I just put
- 7:12that back. Okay. Hey, what's what's this thing here? That's a
- 7:19rabbit's foot, rabbits of foot. Yeah, it's supposed to bring you lucky?
- 7:24What's this charm attached to it? With the Jack reed and Jean with
- 7:30this and me, you can't lose who's the gene? Oh? It must
- 7:34be the gal who's pictures on the piano. Hey, that's what I call
- 7:42him. Good looking girl. Find out who she is and where she lives.
- 7:47Yeah, and put that the rabbits of foot in your handkerchief? What
- 7:53for I wanted? Now? Look, Tony, this whole thing here.
- 7:56It doesn't cost a half a buck maybe, but it's worth half familiar to
- 8:01me. Wrap it up to Georgie. We take it home. Oh,
- 8:18Chris, why if it is my old Altony Milano? Have you been your
- 8:22son of a gun. Put it there if you don't mind chase you and
- 8:26your gerals, you know, Georgie care of course? How are you,
- 8:30Georgie mine? That's down chance you were. You're not too busy. I'm
- 8:35never too busy for you, Tony. But you know how it is when
- 8:37you're a politician, your time isn't your own. They're always out slaving for
- 8:41your constituents. Yeah, what's the matter. Anybody giving you trouble? Yeah?
- 8:48Oh, you just say the word and read what I said the jack
- 8:54karad He opened up a place two blocks of her mind. Oh well,
- 9:00I'll take care of that. I'll shut him up so fast. Do you
- 9:03think you're kidding? Well, I don't understand. Reid couldn't operate five minutes
- 9:11without you. Are you cut it out? Tony? You know someone was
- 9:18to walk in now, they wouldn't realize you're kidding. I'll tell you what
- 9:22we'll do. I ain't going to do anything, Christie. When I'm buy
- 9:26somebody, I expect them to work only for me. You know what I
- 9:33mean, for keep's sake. Man, You don't realize what you're doing.
- 9:37I've got a wife and two kids. There get by on your insurance.
- 9:39Tony, Please, you've gonna listen to no breathing in my face. So
- 9:43Christie, it's a very undersanitary. You've got to give you a break.
- 9:45I was taking this whole thing out. I'll talk to read. Uh it
- 9:54took you long enough, Tony, what were you waiting for? I just
- 9:56want to hear what he's got to say. Here is that the rabbit's foot
- 10:01we got from Jack Reed's apartment. Oh, here is putting his hand.
- 10:05Okay, maybe it will bring mister Christie Locke where he's gone. I got
- 10:20that step all wrong, mine, I'll show you. Hey, Rex,
- 10:24give me the wine wang blues. I want to show Marge that break.
- 10:28I want you, Patsy go away. But I'm busy. How are you
- 10:43sed to here? Oh? Oh, I'm sorry, mister Milano. I
- 10:50didn't recognize you. That's all right. You got a girl, a singer
- 10:54in the show named the Jean Jean Patterson. Yeah, that's the one.
- 11:00Sure an. Yeah. Would you like me to show you her dressing room?
- 11:03I appreciate. Oh that's okay, Tony, What oh I mean,
- 11:09mister Milano? Say you wouldn't have a spot for a hook from one of
- 11:13your I just thought i'd ask no harm trying. You know, you see
- 11:18it? Hey, yeah, yeah, Hey Jane, Jane, you decent?
- 11:24You want here? You got company? Hello? Who are you?
- 11:35Tony Milano? Well, I'm glad to be some service, mister Millano.
- 11:37Hey, well are you you're going to invite me? Why should I?
- 11:46It's all for a draft the standing here, you know that's how most people
- 11:50catch a cold. What do you want, mister Milano? Just to get
- 11:56acquainted? You see? I saw your picture somewhere. Gee, you can
- 12:01call me to me? Not really, what's the matter? Gee? Don't
- 12:07you want to be my friend? Well it's a wonderful offer, mister Milano.
- 12:11But you see I already got one. Oh you mean Jack Reed?
- 12:16Who told you about me? And Jack? I got a spies? Oh.
- 12:22I don't know where they forgot their information, but apparently it's a reliable
- 12:24source. So you see it. I can't be friends. I'm terribly sorry,
- 12:28mister Millana. But if you can't leave your name and address, you
- 12:31will let me know if there's an opening. Well, I wouldn't hold my
- 12:35breath if I were you. That's all right. When I see something I
- 12:41like, I'm a very very patient man. Goodbye, Jean, don't forget,
- 12:50don't forget to give me a call. Hello, Jack, No,
- 13:09No, I can't free it. Wow, how are you? Lieutenant Pie?
- 13:16Fine? Now let me stop you playing. Ah, I was just
- 13:18tying around. Hey, it brings you here, can't you guess? I
- 13:24told that Jack, so for mine not to fluck me the pluck. It's
- 13:26a little tougher wrap than that. Jack never seen this rabbit's foot before,
- 13:33I'm afraid not. But I'll be glad to read you the inscription on the
- 13:37charm. It says to Jack, read from Jean with this and you get
- 13:43that, Lieutenant, Oh, then it is yours? Not necessarily, am
- 13:46I Jack? There's no use being KG already checked it with a jeweler.
- 13:50He told me it was bought a couple of weeks ago by a girl named
- 13:52Jean Patterson. Where'd you find it in the one place we shouldn't you know?
- 13:56Chuck Christine, boss the Pelham District. Yeah, mister Christy just got
- 14:01himself a new territory. I think we've had enough riddles for tonight. He
- 14:05was murdered at five o'clock this afternoon. Well, well, right near the
- 14:09body, we found your trinket. Looks like losing that foot was the worst
- 14:13possible luck for you in that rabbit. Let's go, Jack, I get
- 14:16a car downstairs. You are listening to the amazing mister Malone. Today,
- 14:35more than ever before, Americans must be made to realize that freedom and the
- 14:39rights of the common man are a precious heritage. History has proved that people
- 14:43start to lose their freedom the moment they think it's forever secure. That's why
- 14:48we must all work at keeping our American heritage of freedom. For freedom is
- 14:52everybody's job as a good citizen. Remember your American heritage and work to defend
- 14:58your individ your liberties. Do this by taking a more actual part in the
- 15:03affairs of your community and in fulfilling at all times the duties of American citizenship.
- 15:09Now back to the amazing mister Malone, and that's where you as truly
- 15:22got into the act. And without even seeing the script. But six hours
- 15:26after the arrested Jack Reid for the murder of Chuck Christie, I was pounding
- 15:28the pillow at home. I was right in the midst of a horrible nightmare.
- 15:33An eighth like face was bending over mine, tickling my throat. With
- 15:37a razor, and suddenly I made an interesting discovery. There was no dream.
- 15:43Come on alone, Get up. You're asking the impossible, comrade.
- 15:48If I ever moved now, i'd be minus ahead. And you know something,
- 15:50I'd look better without it. You put that razor away? Do I
- 15:54look weak minded? Don't expect me to answer that while you're caressing my throat,
- 16:00Or you shouldn't wipe me him alone, I know I got the skin
- 16:03you love to clutch. Say you're a regular vaudeville show, ain't you?
- 16:06Ain't I? What's your name? Friend? Rube Gelder? Rube Gelder?
- 16:11Yeah, I work for Jack Read You know him. I know him well.
- 16:15Early tonight the police picked him up for the murderer of Chuck Christi,
- 16:18the politician. Yeah, lucky thing for that cop. I wasn't a wrong
- 16:22otherwise, otherwise I would have broken his back for I let him walk off
- 16:26with the boss. What just all got to do with me? Well?
- 16:29I love that guy. When Jack says to me, robe go out and
- 16:32get a lawyer, he decided to give me the business. Yeah, so
- 16:34you're the best mouthpiece in Chicago. Don't seem possible? It isn't. Well,
- 16:40we'll soon know. I'll tell you what you're gonna do. You're gonna
- 16:42get dressed and go down to see Jack and you're gonna get him out.
- 16:45How many you had better? Did it ever occur to you once I'm out
- 16:49of your side, I might tell his story to the police. And did
- 16:52it ever occur to you that it might occur to me to visit you some
- 16:56other night with this razor for the next time. I might not bother to
- 16:59wake you up to see what you mean? Then what are you waiting for?
- 17:03Malone? Get gone? Holy idiotic stunts? Wait, I get my
- 17:14hands on rubs, So help him alone. Don't upset him. Well,
- 17:18I want you to know I never suggested that piece of business doing. I'm
- 17:21sure you didn't. But Small he seems awfully fond of you. He's nuts.
- 17:27I don't know. I keep Moranda. I'm sorry you got me your
- 17:30hamm alone? That's all right? What are you calling him for? I
- 17:34thought you were ready to go. Don't you want me for a lawyer?
- 17:37Sure? But I get it. You kill Christy? Why should I?
- 17:42But the police have a pretty convincing theory. They believe Christy was selling your
- 17:47protection for your club. So so maybe Christy was told to close you up,
- 17:52Tony mill Well, I couldn't Tony have killed Christy, but he could
- 17:56have one of There are a couple of things that argue against it. One
- 18:00Tony had Christy in his hip pocket. You don't generally destroy what you control.
- 18:04There's even a stronger argument than that. What the rabbit foot they found
- 18:07their Christie's body. That's a frame. You generally carry it with you.
- 18:11No, I don't believe in that stuff. Last night I saw it.
- 18:14It was in my desk. Anybody else have a key to your apartment?
- 18:17No? Oh, that's just Then. About this gal who gave you the
- 18:21rabbit's foot? What's her name? Jean? You think this gene? No?
- 18:23No, I want her kept out of this. Malone. You're asking
- 18:26me impossible. She's got nothing to do with this. Suppose you let me
- 18:29decide that for myself. I want to Yeah, hello, Jean. No,
- 18:48but that can be easily remedied. My name is Malone. And you
- 18:52heard me singing one night and you decided I was a good or good dream?
- 18:56Not quiet. You say I'm a lawyer, Well, when I want
- 18:57to see somebody, don't call me. I'll be tied up. With Jack
- 19:02read Jack reed. Didn't you see this morning's papers. No, they're holding
- 19:06him for the murder of a politician named Christy. Maybe you better come in.
- 19:11What's it all about? Well, you see this, Christie, I'm
- 19:15not interested in that. How am I involved? Well, they found a
- 19:18rabbit's foot you gave Jack near the body? Malone? I didn't even know
- 19:22Christie. No one says you did. Gee, well, I'm hoping to
- 19:25accomplish. Tell me your plans. I'm not interested. Jack's got some nerv
- 19:29ring in the end of this. Well, in all fairness to him,
- 19:30lover, it wasn't Jack's idea, don't tell me it was yours. Yeah,
- 19:33well, thank you, mister Malone. This is just the kind of
- 19:37publicity I love. They don't seem to realize your boyfriend's and a jammy may
- 19:41go to the chair. I'm off sorry for Jack? What about me?
- 19:44What about you? I got my career to think, gov. And if
- 19:45you'll excuse me, mister Malone, I'll give it some thought right now,
- 20:00All right, all right, take it easy. Yeah, mister Milano,
- 20:04and you're Jean Patterson. Would you mind telling mister Milano. I'd like to
- 20:10see, isn't here. But when do you expect it? Never? Now?
- 20:14If I were use sister, it's nobody. It's Jeane. Hello,
- 20:23missus Patherson, it was Geane. You have what you say? Then you
- 20:30don't want to be friends? Change the month? Should I troll around?
- 20:33Tony? You're crazy? Genie, come one, dang yay. This is
- 20:42quite a place, nicer than Jack Reeves. Wow? Different? Who picked
- 20:52up this color scheme? You don't like? White? Reminds me of a
- 20:56hospital. It's very undecepting. Oh yeah, course, sit down, sit
- 21:03down? Maybe maybe like a drink. But there's something else I like you
- 21:11just to name it a little private all right? To Georgie, you heard
- 21:15the lady? What's the matter with you? Tony? Go on? Beat
- 21:18it, Ginny and I got a lot of things to discot. You crazy.
- 21:22You know she wasn't sitting here by my alon. Go on, sister,
- 21:25blow like that. I listen, Sis, I'll get out, Okay,
- 21:33Tony, I'll see you around. Don't bother mister Milana. You're all
- 21:40right do the low life. Look look what he did to my knock.
- 21:47Are your cat? And maybe I make it? No, no, no,
- 21:51we mustn't take a chance on infection. You sit there, baby,
- 21:55Tony be right back, and then we're going to have a nice long talk
- 22:14mind power Robe. But then we talked, Malone, what's wrong with this?
- 22:18Well? I did like it, Tom, I followed that Jean Patterson
- 22:21And what do you suppose she went? Where to see Tony Milano? Tony
- 22:23Milano, be sure about that? Robe? I swear on my mother's grave.
- 22:27I wonder where they first Smith. It couldn't be so long ago.
- 22:30Jean's been going with Jack ever since she came into Chicago. What happened?
- 22:33Would have got along Swell? The bus was nuts. I mean the Milano's
- 22:37apart. Oh how should I know? I'm not peeping? Tom? Oh?
- 22:41Yeah. A couple of minutes after she walked in, Georgie Kelp came
- 22:44out. Tony's boring. Yeah, he was rubbing his jaw. Sounds like
- 22:47they might have had trouble. Well, what do you think, Malone?
- 22:48You did all right? Robe. Let's hope I can do as well.
- 23:00Well, there it is, Lieutenant. What more can you want a little
- 23:02proof? It's as obvious as a hole in your head. Tony framed Jack
- 23:06read could be for a million reasons. I love how you throw those figures
- 23:08around. Well, it's true. Now suppose Tony had a yen for Geene
- 23:12Patterson, so he kills a politician he has in his pocket just to get
- 23:15rid of read all right, maybe that came later. Maybe Tony didn't have
- 23:18Christy in his pocket. We know Christy was selling him out. How do
- 23:22we know that? Well, Jack was still operating. He couldn't do it
- 23:26without Christy's help, changing horses and minstry. Yeah. Yeah, Well,
- 23:29the more I think about it, I bet it's the real reason Alano had
- 23:33an exclusive on Christie's services. When Christy double crossed him, Tony put him
- 23:36away. And what about that rabbit's foot? I don't know where Morlano got
- 23:40his hands on that, but if you work hard, Enuf, you'll find
- 23:42the answer. Your amazing. Yeah, you're making sense for a change,
- 23:48And you believe my client was framed. Yeah. The only thing that bothers
- 23:51me is how to prove it. Well, jeor Gykelk must have been along
- 23:55with Tony at the time of the killing. You don't think Georgic talk.
- 23:57He might have his stage did What What do you mean let Jack raid go?
- 24:02Are you stark rating? It's not only chance? What do you think
- 24:06will happen when Tony finds out the police no longer suspect Jack raid. But
- 24:10I don't know either. Let's find out hot in dying. I'll be ready
- 24:25and just missed. Hello, Jean, Jack smiter, An't you glad to
- 24:30see me? Chris Darling? Just such? Is it? Dra that Malone
- 24:34is quite a lawyer? Then they know you didn't kill Christy? That was
- 24:38my impression. Smarter Jeane, you're thinking of hedging again. I don't get
- 24:45you, Jack. I heard about you and mister Millano. What Rube filled
- 24:49me in on the gory details. Listen, Jackie, gotta believe I was
- 24:53only doing it for you. I mean it. I thought I could trap
- 24:56Tony too, making some mugrition. I gotta hand to you, Gene,
- 25:00that's a that's a nice piece of ad living. When I cross you,
- 25:04you'd cross your own grandmother if you started to do you any good. What
- 25:07are you gonna do now? Baby? It's on me a question of time
- 25:10before they pick up your new meal ticket. You think you so smart?
- 25:12Well, Tony's twice the man you will him. Do you think he's gonna
- 25:17take this landown? No? What's she gonna do you'll just watch and see,
- 25:19mister Reed, you just watch and see. Yeah alone, I never
- 25:37want to know. How are we doing, Lieutenant Great? What do you
- 25:41mean? Pt of yours is working? Like a minute? Letting Jack Red
- 25:45go Surfay started the ballroom? Why did I tell you? I'll bet Tony
- 25:48Millana doesn't know where he's at. Probably what about Georgie Kelch you hear from
- 25:53him? Yeah? I figured he'd be scared silly. What do you have
- 25:57to say? Not very much? I will they talk to reasons one,
- 26:02he ain't in the moon too. He's gotta pull it to he's head.
- 26:06I want to see you alone. You are listening to the amazing mister Malone.
- 26:22Everybody knows about today's critical housing shortage and the various reasons for this shortage,
- 26:29but there are many people who do not think of one very important contributing
- 26:33factor, forest fires. Last year, forest fires burned enough trees of saw
- 26:38timber to build about eighty six thousand five room homes. Nine out of every
- 26:45ten forest fires are man made. Most of these men caused fires are due
- 26:48to plain carelessness, and that's why everyone therefore should follow these simple rules of
- 26:53forest fire prevention. Crush out cigarette cigar and piefashes matches in two after using
- 27:02I'm drown all campfires. Remember you are a potential firebog, so be careful.
- 27:10Now back to the amazing mister Malone. Twenty minutes later, I was
- 27:21down at headquarters. When I walked into Lieutenant Brooks office. The first one
- 27:25I noticed was my client Jack Read. He didn't say anything. He just
- 27:29shook his head sadly and motioned towards the desk. And then I saw Brooks.
- 27:33It's lucky I did, because he was sighting a revolver at him.
- 27:37It isn't the amazing mister Malone. I got a good mind. You haven't
- 27:42got a good mind, and put down that gun. If you had any
- 27:45brains, I swear it, blow them out. What happened you tell him,
- 27:48Jacket, Well, I went up to Georgie Keelch's place about eight thirty
- 27:53to night. And what did you do that for? I told you to
- 27:56stay away. I see now it was a mistake. Anyway, Georgie was
- 28:00certainly surprised. I think if it had five minutes more I would have gotten
- 28:03the whole story. Well, suddenly the door opened. All I saw was
- 28:07an arm and a gun. I yelled at Georgia to get down, but
- 28:10I was a little late. It was a shot. A second later someone
- 28:14tossed that rod into the Roman almost brain me. Got the gun there?
- 28:17Yeah, I want to see it. Yeah, what about Prince larrea one?
- 28:21It's as clean as a baby's thoughts? Whose gun is it mine?
- 28:25What? Yeah, it's an old one I had in my apartment. Well,
- 28:27how did my rabbit's foot get near Christy's body? Here we go again.
- 28:32Listen, Louke Kenneth. You looked into that angle. What's the story?
- 28:34The superintendent of the house, a boy named Grime as the only pass
- 28:38key. You think there's Grimes might have done business with Tony Milano. We're
- 28:41checking that now. When he finished, give us a call. We'll be
- 28:45over Tony's. You worried about Jee. I know Jack too. You don't
- 28:59understand alone got him out. He's a pretty good lawyer. Now you listen
- 29:03to me. Now, you got nothing to worry about it. Didn't Tony
- 29:06say he take care of you? I know you will tell on't is it?
- 29:10Yes? Hello, Tony Malone, Jeane and I were just talking about
- 29:18you. Well, I appreciate that, you know Jack read don't you sure?
- 29:25How are you, fellow? He's a boy, Malone, I'm a
- 29:29what the boy? Where were you around eight thirty the night? Why,
- 29:33that's the time Georgie Chuck was murdered. Not a good old George. He's
- 29:38a good old Georgie. You got an alibi for that time. Yeah,
- 29:44yeah, I was right here, And of course Jean's your witness. That's
- 29:48right now. Look, I don't want to be involved. Sure, you
- 29:52got your career. What's the matter now? Don't you remember we were sitting
- 29:56right there. You're lying, Tony. You sound like you can pro with
- 30:00Jack. I can't. He's the one who shot Kelk. You're out of
- 30:02your mind. You didn't see his face? No, I didn't have to.
- 30:06Is he got bandage? He's got on his knuckles? What did you
- 30:07pick that up to him? None of your breathiness? Shut up? He
- 30:11had consulted me. I didn't think that was possible. Go on, Jack,
- 30:15what about the bandage? Well, when he tossed the gun into the
- 30:18room, I noticed you were alive. I don't think so. Whoa come
- 30:21in, lieutenant? How did you make out? Could be better? Superintendent
- 30:25admits he sold Tony here. The use of the pass key for three hundred
- 30:27bucks. What are you saying alone him? Nothing until I see a lawyer.
- 30:33What's wrong with me? You mean you mean you take my case?
- 30:37Well? At all defenders? I think I could get you off of Georgie's
- 30:41murder? Are you out of your mind? Blow? Now? Don't you
- 30:44think I can? Jack? No Ah, you're just saying that because you
- 30:48killed him. Let's have had a Jack? What for? Jack? You
- 30:52got it the first time you killed Georgie Kelk. I don't know how you
- 31:03do it? Molaw? Shall I tell you a single lieutenant? No?
- 31:07You don't need it? All right? What's the real story? It'll all
- 31:10come down to Jack Reid's eye. There poetic justice, he thought. Once
- 31:14we figured that Tony killed Christie and plane of that Rabbits, what figure Georgie
- 31:18Kelt's murder was the same routine all over again? That's it what convinced otherwise
- 31:22Jack's gun? Why was that any different from the rabbits wood? Remember you
- 31:26told me there were no old fingerprints on it? There weren't. Well obviously
- 31:30then Georgie's killer had to be wearing gloves. How do you ride at that?
- 31:33Jack claimed? He chucked the rod into the room right after the shot,
- 31:36taking no time to wipe it all. So so later Jackie said,
- 31:41he you Tony was the man because he spotted him by that bandage and his
- 31:44knuckles. But the murder of war gloves? How could you see a bandage?
- 31:48You couldn't? Oh see how simple it is? Well, being simple
- 31:53minded yourself must help you. Yes, does when you work up to that
- 31:57state, you'll find out. Well. You know who I'm sorry for,
- 32:01Yeah, Geene Patterson, and I was poor girl. He tried to play
- 32:09both ends against the middle, wound up with nothing. I begged your pardon,
- 32:16where are you going? Well? I I owe Gene something for putting
- 32:21away both her friends. Maybe I can further her career. Ever heard the
- 32:38story of the Blase character who thought nothing could surprise him until he tried murder
- 32:43and he was shocked to death. I'll pay you in on all the details
- 32:46next week, So I whant to pick me up at my office at the
- 32:49same time I'll be waiting for you. Good night. Rank Lovejoy was starred
- 32:54as John Jay Malone. Our program was written by Gene Wang, with the
- 33:00by Bill Russol, music by Rex Corey. The Amazing Mister Malone is produced
- 33:05by Bernard el Schubert and now this is Dresser Dolls Diad inviting you to tune
- 33:08in next week. The events and characters depicted in this story were entirely fictional.
- 33:14At any resemblance to actual places or people living or dead is entirely coincidental.
- 33:20The amazing mister Malone has come to you from Hollywood. This is ABC,
- 33:23the American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. Well this I don't believe.
- 33:30I'm actually fairly certain that they did not get this naming thing of using a
- 33:40proverb as a sort of way to name an episode. They did not get
- 33:45that from the book. But it was one of those things that did stick.
- 33:51Even as other actors came on to play the role of John J.
- 33:54Malone, The big highlight I think for that episode was the guest star,
- 34:01the client turned murderer Jeff Chandler. Jeff Chandler actually playing doubles here and just
- 34:10a little bit before he would begin his great role as mister Boynton on Armiss
- 34:23Brooks, which, outside of his work in Michael Shane Detractive Fiction fans will
- 34:30remember him for is probably his greatest radio claim to fame. And of course
- 34:37I mentioned we would talk a little bit about Frank Lovejoy, and he was
- 34:40just a very talented actor. Did a lot of things over radio. The
- 34:47one that he's best noted for is Nightbeat, which was one of the more
- 34:53unique mystery programs, but he had a lot of programs before not Beat.
- 35:01His run here as John J. Malone, even though we only have two
- 35:07episodes of it, was one hundred and fifteen episodes playing John J. Malone.
- 35:13Coincidentally, the series was set in Chicago, where his best series,
- 35:22nine Beat, would also be set, so I guess preparing for that,
- 35:27and we'll also play another series with Frank Lovejoy. Love Joyce just he was
- 35:34one of those indispensable people. We've heard him do guest spots on Box thirteen
- 35:39and The Adventures of Frank Rice, and I personally have been surprised some of
- 35:44the places I ran into him as an actor. He was the first voice
- 35:50of a narrator for This Is Your FBI and also on Life with Luigi.
- 35:55I ranked him forty two among number forty two among radio's most essential people,
- 36:00and I think he definitely deserves the ranking. All Right, well, we'll
- 36:07have another actor, Gene Raymond in the title role as John j Malone in
- 36:14next week's show, and longtime fans will note that the sad fact of the
- 36:22lack of preservation of these ABC programs is not unusual. Of the between the
- 36:30Gene Raymond and Frank Lovejoy episodes, there were one hundred and sixty five episodes
- 36:39of Mister Malone over ABC. Of those, we have a grand total of
- 36:45four excuse me, four out of one hundred and sixty seven is the total.
- 36:49And then we have eight episodes, all eight that were done over NBC.
- 36:54That was That was something that was pretty typical for ABC since there were
- 37:00less networks out there and therefore that were ABC affiliates, so there were less
- 37:07transcription disc made. The one exception to this really really sad to say is
- 37:14Danger Doctor Danfield one series will never play here because it was just the worst
- 37:20detective program ever made and all twenty seven episodes survived. Wow, now that
- 37:30is sad, all right? Well, now we do from sad to happy.
- 37:35Time to go to listener comments and feedback, and he writes, these
- 37:43shows are the best things to do with an iPod or iPad or iPhone.
- 37:47Johnny Dollar is my favorite the podcast app work so well. Thanks for the
- 37:52dedication. There are many shows that I listened to more than once. I'm
- 37:57glad to hear hear from you on that tim and it definitely works great for
- 38:02Android devices. Actually, last month was the first time that we sold more
- 38:14on the Amazon App Store than we did on the iTunes store, so maybe
- 38:20some changing trends there, Robert Says, who helped support the show, says,
- 38:27Adam been listening for a few years now. I want to thank you
- 38:30for all your hard work, looking forward to the upcoming shows. Well,
- 38:35thanks so much, Robert, and that will do it for today. Join
- 38:38us back here tomorrow as we continue on with the Clinton matter, and then
- 38:45next Tuesday it'll be Jane Raymond and Murder and mister Malone. In the meanwhile,
