Latest / The Daily Ripples Podcast / WAVE: Big Book Study with Corey Session Twelve - How it Works Part 2
Transcript
- 0:00Hey guys, this is the Wave Book study and we are, I've kind of fought with myself of how to approach this.
- 0:08We're on page 60.
- 0:09Um, we just finished up with the ABCs on how and how it works and.
- 0:17You know, I come into this thing of like, should I, the way I approach this when I'm taking someone new through the work and I don't, I would, I kind of wrestled with.
- 0:26Do I want to go through page 60 to 63 or 60 to 64?
- 0:30And the reason is, because like the way it's, this is step 3 from 60 to 63.
- 0:37And then the bottom of 63 starts step four.
- 0:42Well, the process of it, and it's intertwined, and the way I take someone through the steps is I take them through 3rd step prayer.
- 0:52We do search that prayer, then I get them started on the 4 step.
- 0:56And so that's what we're going to do.
- 0:58We're going to go to 60 to 64 and um, yeah, but this stuff's important and I've found myself trying, some days, I, early on, I was reading this, these 3 pages every day.
- 1:11Um, because it talks about me and The way my sponsor took me through and it made it more personal, and I'll probably just take y'all through it that way because it, the way I take other guys through is I use their name.
- 1:25So, Oh, no money.
- 1:28My name's Corey.
- 1:29So, and you know, if you want to, you can, well, I'm kind of reading through this and kind of explaining it.
- 1:34Just think about your own name.
- 1:35And, um, you know, if it doesn't align with you, it talks about, you know, most people live by this way, but I, uh, I think it comes back into page 30 before we get started and page 30 tells me.
- 1:55The delusion that we are like other people are presently maybe has to be smashed.
- 2:01Um,
- 2:03And so I think that's important going into this.
- 2:05And so middle page, kind of not middle page, but where it says being convinced, that's where we're going to start.
- 2:12So it says being convinced we are a step three.
- 2:16I think that means we're at step 3 now, right?
- 2:19Which is that we decided, or let's do it this way.
- 2:23Being convinced that Corey was at step three.
- 2:25which is that Corey decided to turn his will and his life over to the care of God as he understood him. So like, what I like to do when I think about those words is turn my will.
- 2:38So I think will is means thoughts and life means action.
- 2:43So if I reworded that, it'd say, being convinced Corey was at step three, which is that Corey decided to turn his thoughts and his actions over to God as he understood him.
- 2:55Then it says, just what do we mean by that?
- 2:58And just what do we do?
- 3:00And so it says the 1st requirement.
- 3:03And I circled, and I circled some things, and I think this word is a big word. Requirement, the 1st requirement is that Corey be convinced that any life run on self self-will can hardly be a success.
- 3:18On that basis.
- 3:20We're almost on collision, we're always in collision with something or somebody.
- 3:26Even though Corey's motives are good.
- 3:29So even though my motives are good, I usually, I'll run into people.
- 3:35And it's like, you know, I come into that place and if you think back about it on page 52, how it talks about like full of fear, could be a real help, could make a living.
- 3:44You know, I come into that, right?
- 3:46You know, I try and I try and I try, but I'm always in collision with life.
- 3:50Why isn't it working?
- 3:53And that's what, that's kind of like, you know, my thought behind that is that's where it connects to. And it says, most people try to live by self-propulsion.
- 4:01Well, we just talked about, the delusion unlike most other people has to be smashed.
- 4:05Some people do this very successfully.
- 4:07Some, for some reason, that 3rd part of the 1st step, right, unmanageability, man, like, you know, this is where I believe this comes through.
- 4:17Most people try to live by self-propulsion.
- 4:21Each person is like an actor who wants to run the whole show, is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet, the scenery, and the rest of the players in Corey's own way.
- 4:33If Corey's arrangements would only stay put if people, if only people would do as Corey wished.
- 4:40The show would be great.
- 4:42So the show would be great.
- 4:43If everybody would do just as I wished for them and me.
- 4:47Goes on to say everybody, including Corey, would be, please.
- 4:51And it doesn't say, you know, whatever, you all get the point.
- 4:53Everybody, including Corey, would be, please, life would be wonderful.
- 4:59for them and me, right?
- 5:00I think that's cool because, like, I think I know best for you, too.
- 5:03It says in trying to make these arrangements.
- 5:06Corey may be sometimes be quite virtuous.
- 5:11And like, virtuous is morally excellent, right?
- 5:14I might be so like, you know, morally excellent in my thoughts.
- 5:17I might, Corey might be kind.
- 5:21Consider patience, generous, even modest and self-sacrificing.
- 5:25On the other hand, Corey may be mean, egotistical, selfish and dishonest.
- 5:30I think about a lot, like, you know, in a relationship with somebody and coming into that place where, yeah, wait, do you sex, sex is a great example of this.
- 5:42Like, I can be patient, considerate, kind, generous when I'm wanting sex with my partner.
- 5:49You know, but what if I don't get what I want?
- 5:53On the other hand, I might be mean, egotistical, selfish, dishonest.
- 5:58Just trying to get my way, trying to make life, and you do what I want.
- 6:03And I don't do that in an array of ways, right?
- 6:06I'll do that at work.
- 6:07I'll do that, you know, when I'm just around people.
- 6:11Try to trying to get my way.
- 6:13Just, hey, man, like just being so nice to people and using people.
- 6:17Then it goes on to sale.
- 6:20But as with most humans, Corey is more likely to have varied traits.
- 6:25What usually happens.
- 6:27The show doesn't go off very well.
- 6:30Corey begins to think life doesn't treat him right.
- 6:34Corey decides to exert himself more.
- 6:37So I'm exerting myself to be even more patient, generous, even modest, self-sacrificing.
- 6:45Maybe I exert myself more to be more mean, egotistical selfish dishonest.
- 6:50Back to the text.
- 6:52He becomes on the next occasion, the same word, still more demanding or gracious as the case may be.
- 6:59Still, the play does not sue Corey.
- 7:03Admitting.
- 7:04He may be somewhat at fault.
- 7:07He is sure other people are more to blame.
- 7:09So admitting, Corey, admitting I may be somewhat at fault.
- 7:14Corey is sure that other people are more to blame, and this is where you separate all this stuff people talk about in every single meeting, and I don't care to give my opinion about this because I think it's important.
- 7:29Because if you play a part and I play a part.
- 7:34And something, I will always play less than a part than you, because the house always wins.
- 7:41And we're going to skip over just a hair bed to page 67.
- 7:47So, it says, on the middle paragraph, it says, putting out of our minds, the wrongs others had done.
- 7:55So I put out my mind what you have done to me.
- 8:00And then it says, we resolutely look for our own mistakes.
- 8:05So resolutely means with determination.
- 8:07So with determination, that means nothing in the whole part of any part that you played and I played.
- 8:15Um, I use another sheet of paper for that, this piece of the inventory.
- 8:20Because if I think if I played a part and you played a part, you will always play a bigger part. The house always wins.
- 8:27When I get home, And my significant other has done the dishes.
- 8:33And clean, or she hasn't done the dishes.
- 8:37That's my job, but it's off, she has done laundry.
- 8:41Did play with baby all day, clean this, clean that, clean this, and I get home and I do the dishes.
- 8:48My doing the dishes trumps everything because the house always wins.
- 8:53Same with anything that I say with, I looked at my part.
- 8:58It doesn't say part anywhere in the inventory process.
- 9:01So I think that's just an important thing that we get misled on this because everybody in these other places and I do not look at what the literature says.
- 9:11And you know, the literature says right here.
- 9:14Admitting, Corey may be somewhat at fault.
- 9:18Corey is sure that other people are more to blame than it says this.
- 9:23And we're on page 61 in the middle if you haven't fallen along, but that's okay.
- 9:28Says he becomes angry and didn't self-pitying.
- 9:31What is Corey's basic trouble?
- 9:33Is Corey not a self seeker?
- 9:35Even when trying to be kind?
- 9:37Is Cory not a victim of the delusion that he can rest satisfaction?
- 9:42So I'm going to fix that word.
- 9:45Is he not a victim of the delusion that he can forcefully have satisfaction and happiness out of this world if Corey only manages well.
- 9:54So if I just do good, and everybody does what I want, the world would be great.
- 10:03Is it not adding to all the rest of the players?
- 10:05That these, that these are the things that Corey wants.
- 10:10Do you people not know what I want and what I need?
- 10:13Like, I mean, that's the thing, right?
- 10:15Like, I think everybody knows that, and you people can read my mind, and y'all know that Corey knows best.
- 10:21See, this is where you go come into this place of right.
- 10:25The 1st requirement is that we be convinced that any life's run on self-will can hardly be excess, right?
- 10:31And it says back here, it says it is not evident to all the rest of the players that these are the things he wants and do not hit.
- 10:38Corey's actions make each of them wish to retaliate.
- 10:41Snatching all they can get out of the show. Is Corey not even the best moment, a producer of confusion rather than harmony?
- 10:49And I'm going to show you guys real quick.
- 10:52Where the promise to that is.
- 10:54And what that means, right?
- 10:57So the promise of that is on page 88.
- 10:59And on page 88.
- 11:02It says, We do not tire so easily, for we are not burning up energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves.
- 11:15Right, so I'm not running around foolishly.
- 11:19And that's the promise, right?
- 11:24Because this looks like I'm a producer of confusion rather than harmony.
- 11:28I have been.
- 11:29Like, because I'm just out here point fingers and thinking that I'm a good manager over everybody.
- 11:35Now it goes on to say our actor.
- 11:38that we're back on 61 at the bottom paragraph, our actor is self-centered, egosentered.
- 11:44So like, It says over here, most people try to live by self-propulsion on page 60, but like, and it gives me this example of that.
- 11:53And then it goes on to say our actor is self-centered, ego-centric.
- 11:58So to me, that looks like a higher degree of that right there.
- 12:01As people like to call it nowadays,
- 12:03Corey is like the retired businessman who lolls in the Florida sunshine and the winner complaining of the sad state of the nation.
- 12:10The minister who sighs over the sins of the 20th century.
- 12:15Now, I like this part right here because it says politicians and reformers who are sure all would be utopia if the rest of the world would only behave.
- 12:27So if everybody did what I wanted them to do.
- 12:31And behave, it would be utopia.
- 12:34And what's cool about that is I, and I don't remember marching this book, but on page 15, back in Bill's story, this is, you know, this is the promise to this work as well, right?
- 12:47Bottom paragraph of page, or page 16.
- 12:51I'm sorry.
- 12:52Bottom paragraph of page 16, the last paragraph in Bill's story, it says most of us feel we need to look no further for utopia.
- 13:01We have it right here and now.
- 13:03Each day, my friend simple talk in our kitchen multiplies itself in a widening circle of peace on earth and goodwill to mint.
- 13:12So it tells me that utopia is right here and now.
- 13:15Oh.
- 13:17And so on the top of page 62.
- 13:20It says the outlaw, the safecracker, who thinks society has wronged Corey, and the alcoholic, who has lost all in his lock locked up.
- 13:30Whatever our product stations are, not most of us concerned with ourselves, our resentments are self-pity.
- 13:37And, um, man, I got so much highlighted and underlined through this page.
- 13:45I think, you know, it's probably best for you to decide what you want, but I would definitely, if you have a pen, if you have a highlighter, this, these next 2 sentences would probably,
- 13:57Well, some of the most important sentences of this book, it says selfishness, self-centeredness, that we think is the root of Corey's troubles.
- 14:05So, we're not talking about alcohol.
- 14:10We're talking about selfishness, self-centeredness.
- 14:13That's my root of my troubles.
- 14:15Huh.
- 14:16And the cool thing is, if I know the root of my troubles is that.
- 14:21I'd imagine the opposite is that as helping others, just a guess.
- 14:26Anyways, driven by 100 forms of fear, self-delusion and self seeking.
- 14:32And self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellas and they retaliate.
- 14:39So I step on the toes of my fellows.
- 14:42So I like this view because it's been true in my inventory processes.
- 14:49It's like, I'll have this girl that what she did was, you know, had the name of the person, what she did was cheat on me.
- 15:01And it didn't make me, 3rd column didn't make me feel good, right?
- 15:06But on the 4th column.
- 15:08What did I do to her?
- 15:10Well, selfishly, I wasn't there.
- 15:14You know, I wasn't thinking about her, self seeking motives.
- 15:18I probably wouldn't was talking to other women and giving my time to them.
- 15:22I'd probably cheated on her already before she did it to me.
- 15:26And I wasn't president of the present in the relationship at all.
- 15:29And maybe I was.
- 15:30Maybe I didn't cheat on her.
- 15:32Maybe I just wasn't present because I was drinking the whole time and not being a partner and not having my priorities, right?
- 15:38Because the priorities is in our home occupations and affairs.
- 15:42And I usually at that time of my life when all these different things were falling in pieces, I had those backwards, right?
- 15:49Because people were, People, my affairs were my priority.
- 15:53My 2nd was my job to keep my affairs in London, and 3rd was my home.
- 15:59So, and then it says this, it says, sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, they didn't even know it.
- 16:08But we invariably find that at some time in the past, we've made decisions based on self, which later put places in position to be hurt.
- 16:15And I know we're just talking about relationships, but it's an easy subject because a lot of people go through them.
- 16:20But I have found in my life that I've had resentments at women, and it's not worked out with certain women, but really, where I put them in my life because it says right here, but we we invariably found that sometime in the past we made decisions based on self.
- 16:36So, I've put women in my life just because I didn't want to be alone.
- 16:42I didn't care about what they were about, what their morals were, what their philosophical convictions were, how who they were as a person.
- 16:50I just put them in my life.
- 16:51And then I'm mad about this because they're not this person that I wanted them to be, but I was, and I wasn't who they wanted to be because I was someone fake then too.
- 16:58It's interesting to me.
- 17:00It says,
- 17:02But we invariably found that sometime in the past, we made decisions based on self, which later placed us in a position, but be hurt.
- 17:10And so this is the biggest promise I found through the 4th step, and it might not be what y'all want to hear if you haven't done this and haven't like got to experience this promise.
- 17:24But this is, I got promises and prayers, and I'll just tell you this is in pink right here.
- 17:30So it says, so our troubles we think are basically of our own making.
- 17:35And so if my troubles are of my own making.
- 17:39But I have all these people that I'm mad at, right?
- 17:43Then it's this person's fault.
- 17:46It's my mom and my dad and my birth mother, my birth father, this person, my sisters, that I don't really know, all these people, the baby mama.
- 17:56It's all these people's fault that I am this way.
- 17:59That's a lot of people to get right.
- 18:01But when my troubles are of my own making,
- 18:05It's a lot simpler thing, right?
- 18:08Then we're just looking at one person, not 50 people.
- 18:11And that's simple.
- 18:13That's a lot better for me.
- 18:15I think that's the biggest one of the biggest promises in this big book.
- 18:18Says they arise out of ourselves.
- 18:20And the alcoholic is an extreme example of self well run right, though he usually doesn't think so.
- 18:27So I think that means I'm not going to know when I'm running on self-will.
- 18:31And so if I'm not going to know what I'm running on self-will, that means that I'm not going to see that.
- 18:40Um.
- 18:45So it goes on to say, Above everything, we alcoholics must be rather the selfishness.
- 18:52So I must is a big word right there.
- 18:54So it says I have to be rid of the selfishness.
- 18:58And then it goes on to say, Corey must or kills kills him.
- 19:01So I got must circled both in those 2 because it says it's going to kill me.
- 19:07That's pretty extreme, right?
- 19:09But I think that's important.
- 19:10Then it says, God makes that possible.
- 19:13There often seems no way of entirely getting rid of self without his aid.
- 19:18So I can't get out of self with just me.
- 19:23And so it says, many of us have moral philosophical convictions, galore, but we cannot live up to them even though we'd like to.
- 19:31Neither could we reduce our self-centeredness much by wishing or trying our own power.
- 19:37We had to have God's help.
- 19:38And so we kind of talked about this back here on page 45.
- 19:45Um, well, bottom of 44, it says if a miracle of morals are a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcohols, then many of us would have recovered long ago, but we found that such codes of philosophies did not save us, no matter how much we trust.
- 20:03We could wish to be moral, we could wish to be philosophically confronted.
- 20:08In fact, we could will these things with all our might, but the needed power wasn't there, right?
- 20:13So I could try.
- 20:15I could read the self help books.
- 20:17I could listen to you talk and, you know, say these cool things.
- 20:20I could hang around these people that said these cool things too.
- 20:24But, it tells me that I, it couldn't live up to them even though I'd like to.
- 20:30So it says, Neither can we reduce our self centeredness much by wishing or trying on our own power.
- 20:38We had to have God's help.
- 20:40It had to as like an absolute, right?
- 20:43I had to do something.
- 20:44It's important.
- 20:45So Corey had to have God's help.
- 20:48This is the high line of it.
- 20:51First of all, we had to quit playing God.
- 20:53It did work.
- 20:54Next, Corey decided that hereafter in this drama of life, God was going to be Corey's director.
- 21:01He is the principal.
- 21:03Corey is his agent.
- 21:05He is the father.
- 21:07Corey is his child.
- 21:09Then it says this, and this is like this, I believe like all this is in conjunction to this, but it says, he is the father, wears children, most good ideas are simple, and this concept was the keystone of the new and triumphant art through which we pass the freedom.
- 21:28And as you guys listen to me, you probably know that I don't think about this stuff simply, and it probably hinders me in some ways of trying to help some people, because I probably lose them after I start talking about this stuff.
- 21:40But, you know, this is the, this is the way I view these things, and this is the way I kind of fits into my head, my head's like, it's a pinball machine.
- 21:49I think about these pages and how it all connects and, I do that with a lot of different things and, you know, my sponsor.
- 21:58This is one of the main things he likes to point me to when I'm getting a little out there.
- 22:05He, you know, he just tells me, Corey, you know, most good ideas are simple.
- 22:09And um, sometimes I don't like the simplicity of things and uh, because my brain, you know, I, I'm, I still got some falls in me, right?
- 22:20I'm still human.
- 22:21But, you know, that's, you know, so, but he brings me down to earth with that a little bit.
- 22:25And so in that sentence, it says that this was the keystone and of the new and triumphant arc.
- 22:32And, you know, just a minute ago, we talked about moral philosophical convictions.
- 22:36So this triumphant arc, if you know what a keystone is, the keystone meets an arc at the top.
- 22:45Maya, my sponsor likes to talk about it like the, uh, man, what is that thing?
- 22:51Oh, I hate that I don't know.
- 22:53It's the, uh, thing in the uh, back to the future that they're looking for in the DeLorean.
- 22:59It is the, uh, the, the, the space, no, the, uh, man, sucks that I don't know the name of this right now off the top of my head.
- 23:08The flux capacitor, that's what it is.
- 23:11So, what's interesting about the flood capacitor is because, like, once they get the flux capacitor into the DeLorean, takes them to the 4th another dimension, right?
- 23:22And what's cool about the keystone, right?
- 23:24The keystone meets at the arc.
- 23:26And it, if you imagine like the St. Louis Arc, and you got on one side, morals and the right side, conviction, or philosophical convictions, and that keystone is met at the top, where he is our, my principal and on his agent, where he is the father and on his children.
- 23:46That comes together, the ark is made right there.
- 23:49The keystone's made.
- 23:50God, when God is my center point.
- 23:53And that's, yeah, that's just what it said.
- 23:56I mean, you know, in a way that works is that's how it works.
- 24:00I wish we were passed to freedom and what's freedom, right?
- 24:02And I, you know, we're going to bounce around.
- 24:04It's okay.
- 24:07Bottom of 26 tells me what freedom looks like, you know, what freedom is.
- 24:12Gives me, and that's a promise.
- 24:14It says, the Bible of 26 says, but this man still lives and he is a free man.
- 24:18He does not need a bodyguard nor he's confined.
- 24:20He can go anywhere on this earth where other free men may go without disaster, provided he'd be willing to maintain a certain simple attitude.
- 24:30In that simple attitude, I know we're just hopping pages now.
- 24:36The simple attitudes on the bottom of a page 13 of Bill's story, it says, my friend promised me when these things were done, I would enter upon a new relationship with my creator.
- 24:45That I would have the elements of a way of living which answered all my problems, and these developments, belief in the power of God.
- 24:54Plus enough willingness, honesty, and humility to establish and maintain the new order of things were the central requirements.
- 25:03Central requirements.
- 25:05That's important.
- 25:09Back to the text on the bottom of page, or it was on the top of page 63.
- 25:14And, uh, yeah, these these words are really important to me.
- 25:20This is the 3rd step promise.
- 25:22And it's interesting, like, the way this page is set up.
- 25:26I'm just thinking about this right now, uh, and we'll get to it after we go through it.
- 25:30But anyway, so it says when we sincerely took such a position, all sorts of remarkable things followed.
- 25:36Corey had a new employer.
- 25:39It says we had a new employer, but I may make this a little more personal.
- 25:42Being being all powerful.
- 25:45He provided what Corey needed if Corey kept close to him and performed his work wealth.
- 25:51And, um,
- 25:53You know, I think about that.
- 25:56Do I have what I need today?
- 25:57And I'll tell you yes.
- 25:59What's really cool about that piece, right?
- 26:03It says he provided what we needed if we kept close to him and performed his work well.
- 26:08And if I was to tell a new guy taking them through this work, the way I approach that is, oh, well, I wonder what his work is.
- 26:15The work is.
- 26:16And well, we're on step three.
- 26:18I'd imagine step 4 is the, you know, the next his, the next work, I just, in a structural sense, but, you know, am I doing God's work today?
- 26:28Am I helping others, about living a life of spiritual principles, am I trying to be that kind of person in my family, in my, in my home occupations and affairs, and, um, man, I could wake up in the morning and sit right here and tell you yes.
- 26:44That's a crazy deal for someone like me.
- 26:47I can always do better, right?
- 26:49Um, which is cool because I can keep on seeking and keep on doing this thing and, But it says he provided what we needed.
- 26:57And what do we need?
- 26:59And I could tell you, I'll tell you where the connecting feature or factor or whatever word I'm thinking of.
- 27:05It's on the bottom, it's the bottom paragraph on page 85.
- 27:10So as much has already been said about receiving strength, inspiration and direction from him who has all knowledge of power.
- 27:16If we have carefully followed directions, we begun to sense the flow of his spirit into us. To some extent, we become god conscious.
- 27:24We have begun to develop this vital.
- 27:27So vital is life and death 6 cents.
- 27:30But we must go further and that means more action.
- 27:33So I'm still doing the work, right?
- 27:35And that's on page 685 and that's on the end of the 10 step, but...
- 27:42I enjoy the connections because that's kind of how my brain things, but here's some more promise, the whole paragraph is a promise.
- 27:52So it says established on such a footy, we become less and less interested in ourselves.
- 27:57Corey's little planes and designs, more and more, Corey becomes more interested in seeing what he can contribute to the life.
- 28:05As Corey felt new power flow in.
- 28:08Man, so like, you know, all these places where it's talking about new power and power.
- 28:13Uh, that's crazy.
- 28:15You know, people say they're powerless and that's, because I, that tells me I have a new power flow in. As Corey enjoys, enjoy peace of mind.
- 28:25As Corey discovered, he could face life successfully.
- 28:29As Corey became conscience of his presence, talking about God's presence because that's his capitalized.
- 28:37Corey began to lose his fear of today, tomorrow, or the hereafter.
- 28:42Corey was reborn.
- 28:44Says we were reborn.
- 28:47The reason I say it's interesting, like, you know, this page set up is cool because like that's the promise and here's the 3rd step prayer.
- 28:55Um, So it says we were now at step three.
- 28:59So, 60 says being convinced we were at set three.
- 29:04And the 3rd step prayer right before it starts says we were now at step three.
- 29:11It's interesting to me.
- 29:12Then it says, so it goes on to say, middle paragraph of 63, many of us said to our maker as we understood him.
- 29:19as we understood him, as in squiggly loans.
- 29:23So it's not this person's guy, it's not this, it's your own understanding.
- 29:27And I think that's important to know.
- 29:30So it says, God, I offer myself to thee.
- 29:33To build with me and to do with me as thy will.
- 29:36Relieve me of the bondage of self that I might better do thy will.
- 29:42Take away my difficulties, that victor over them may bear witness to those I would help, of thy power, thy love, and thy way of life, may I do, thy will always.
- 29:55There's exclamation mark at the end of that.
- 29:59So, That's important, right?
- 30:03you know, what's my difficulties?
- 30:05Well, my difficulties me.
- 30:08And victor over me so I could bear witness to those I could help.
- 30:12Right, because like, I got to get over me so I can go be of help to someone else.
- 30:18And so the next sentence is funny because, you know, It says now it says, we thought well before taking this step, making sure we were ready.
- 30:26So it tells me the prayer that it tells me we thought well before taking this stuff.
- 30:30That's crazy.
- 30:31So it's like kind of tricks me into this a little bit, but you know, that's why I think the structural sense is cool.
- 30:36Because maybe if that was before that, maybe people have, hold on, I got to think about before I do this prayer.
- 30:42Anyway, so it says, making sure we were ready that we could at last abandon ourselves utterly to him, and abandon is a stronger word than your surrender than anything else.
- 30:55It is completely pick up and walk away.
- 30:57There's no white flag.
- 30:59It's me getting out of there, right?
- 31:00I've abandoned ship, jumped out, hopped out, abandoned myself utterly to God, as I understood it.
- 31:10Now it says we found it very desirable to take this spiritual step with an understanding person.
- 31:15I think understanding person is someone that understands this work.
- 31:19Then it goes on to saying, I've come into this with a couple different people and I've had them go home and make this prayer with their wife, but because it says, right?
- 31:30So understanding purchase such is our wife.
- 31:32Best friend or spiritual advisor.
- 31:36I could connect the dots, the spiritual advisor as a guy that takes people through the work.
- 31:41Oh, but it's interesting that understanding person such as our wife comes first.
- 31:46That's cool.
- 31:47Because, you know, people talk about in the rooms that I hang out in there.
- 31:53I don't make any big decisions.
- 31:55And like, this is like a huge decision right here, right?
- 31:59This is like me giving my life over to this power that I don't understand what it is, but I'm saying, hey, abandon myself utterly to you.
- 32:07That's not a big decision.
- 32:09But what people say in these places and in these rooms, if you go read the book, it discredits a lot of people, but you know, that's okay.
- 32:18And I mean, I was listening to this dude talk and he was talking today about, and I was listening to him and he was like, man.
- 32:24You know, people think I try to act special or like, you know, this way because I'm so radical.
- 32:30And I'm not radical.
- 32:32I just read, and I think it's important to read the instructions, right?
- 32:38And know what the instructions say.
- 32:39If this is a design for living.
- 32:41This is what it says.
- 32:43So it says, but it is better to be God alone with one who might misunderstand.
- 32:49So it's better, like in, you know, this time, right?
- 32:51They were given this book out back in the 1939 and sending it out.
- 32:55You know, it probably was better to meet God alone than someone who might misunderstood, stand it, that just has this book, right?
- 33:02Says the wording was, of course, quite options optional, so as long as we expressed the idea.
- 33:08Voicing it without reservation.
- 33:10This was only a beginning, though if honestly and humbly made, in effect, sometimes a very great one was felt in once.
- 33:17So like, I like to have somebody that I'm taking through the work, read this paragraph first, right?
- 33:25Because it kind of gets, you know, my sponsor, you know, asked me if this is what I did with guys and, you know, I told him no.
- 33:34And I started doing it because I found myself and have a way with words to some extent and, you know, especially someone vulnerable and with their life broken down, like I can kind of got a conversation.
- 33:49And you know, so when I was taken into this book and we come up to this prayer, you know, I can just run them through it.
- 33:55Um, but I find it best to have them read this paragraph 1st to give them the option to say, hey man, I don't really want to do this.
- 34:05And that's cool.
- 34:07I'm cool with that today.
- 34:09Like, I'd rather, you know, you tell me you don't want to go through this work than find out, like, you know, halfway through more than this, that, like, this wasn't for you. And it's cool if this isn't for you.
- 34:20We hold no monopoly.
- 34:21But, you know, or if I might not be an understanding person to you.
- 34:26That's cool too.
- 34:27Like, but I think, you know, it gives them the option.
- 34:29It gives you the option to do that.
- 34:31And so that's kind of like the, the engulfing of the 3rd step, but I don't think you can stop there.
- 34:41because the next sentence at the very bottom of page 63 says next we launched out a course of a vigorous action.
- 34:48So, there's not like, I'm on step three, because if I'm on step three, then I need a lower total course of vigorous action, the 1st step of which is a personal house clique.
- 35:00Which many of us have never attempted.
- 35:03Though our decision was a vital life and death and crucial step.
- 35:08It could have little permanent effect, unless followed by strenuous effort to face and be rid of the things in ourselves which had been blocking us.
- 35:16So there's a lot to pack right there and it's, uh,
- 35:21So it says, the decision could was a vital and crucial step, but it could have little permanent effect.
- 35:29And this is where it comes back in and we kind of touch on this on page 30 and there's a couple different places.
- 35:37But, um, on page 33.
- 35:41Mill of page 33.
- 35:43It says if we were planning to stop drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind, nor any lurking notion that someday he will be immune to alcohol.
- 35:51Is he, and then it goes on to say right here, right?
- 35:54It could have little permanent effect.
- 35:56Right?
- 35:57So back on page 64, it says it could have little permanent effect.
- 36:01So like, do you want this to be a permanent effect or not?
- 36:03And if so, let's keep rolling.
- 36:06then it tells me what to do if it does. as unless everyone's followed by a strenuous server, the face would be rather the things that ourselves have been blocking us. Well, blocking us off from what?
- 36:17And, you know, I think when I look at what's blocking me, I go to the next page, but just so we can understand what we're talking about, because it says we're harvesting such feelers, we shut ourselves off in the sunlight of the spirit.
- 36:32So I'm shutting myself off from the sunlight of the spirit.
- 36:36With things blocking.
- 36:39It says, uh, We found the great reality deep down within us.
- 36:45So where it says, we found the great reality deep down within us.
- 36:49So that's where God is.
- 36:50So if all these stuff, all these different things I've been pushing down right in my life, um, is blocking me, so it's blocking me forgotten, which is also deep down within me.
- 37:01Uh, sorry for the brain block for a second.
- 37:05I couldn't think about where I was going.
- 37:06Anyway, so what have been blocking me?
- 37:09All the stuff I've been pushing down.
- 37:11And if God's the great reality is deep down with him and all this stuff is deep down with him.
- 37:15That's why we got to get unblogged because if I need to have this clear conscious contact with God, I got to get unblogged for that stuff.
- 37:23I got all the stuff, these resentments.
- 37:25I'm mad at the world of fearful at everything.
- 37:28My conduct through my life has just been crazy. And I'm full of shame, remorse.
- 37:35I don't know how to even look at it.
- 37:36And that's why this is so important because it says, our liquor back on page 64, the bottom of the 1st paragraph, our liquor was but a symptom, so we had to get down the causes and conditions.
- 37:47What's the causes of conditions?
- 37:49Then it goes on to say.
- 37:52Therefore, we started upon a personal inventory.
- 37:54This was step four, a business, which takes no regular inventory usually goes, bro.
- 37:59So that might mean I die. If a business goes broke, it goes under.
- 38:03If I go broke, I might die.
- 38:05I don't know.
- 38:06Taking a commercial inventory is a fat, finding, searching, fat face.
- 38:11So it doesn't say searching, but I have searching over from those word fat finding and fat facing.
- 38:15So I think that's interesting process of searching a fearless process.
- 38:19Is it an effort to discover the truth about the stock in trade?
- 38:23One object is disclosed, damaged or insellable goods, to get rid of them promptly without regret.
- 38:31If the owner of the business is to be successful, he cannot fully himself about values, about truth, right?
- 38:38His values is true.
- 38:39We did exactly the same thing with our lives.
- 38:43We took stock, honestly.
- 38:45First, we searched out the flaws of our own makeup, which caused our failure.
- 38:51So there's flaws and mode, makeup, which caused my failure from the start before I even took a drink.
- 38:57That says being convinced that self-manifested in various ways.
- 39:02Well, what's the various ways?
- 39:04Well, it told me this over here on page 62, right?
- 39:06It says, Selfish and self-centered.
- 39:10That we think is the root of our trouble, driven by 100 forms of fear, self-delusion, self- seeking and self-pity.
- 39:16I imagine those are some of the manifestations to sell.
- 39:19Back on 64.
- 39:22was what had defeated us, we considered it common manifestation.
- 39:27So those are common manifestations.
- 39:28Then it goes on to say resentment is the number one offender.
- 39:32And I think it is an important thing that we understand that it is not the only offender.
- 39:37It's as far as some people get this work, that I think a good representation of some other, some other offenders is on page 147.
- 39:48And it says, on page, is it page 147?
- 39:53Um, no, it's 145.
- 39:55Sorry.
- 39:55It says the greatest enemies of alcoholics.
- 39:59So it says resentment is the number one offender.
- 40:02We got that right.
- 40:03So then it goes on to 145.
- 40:05It says the greatest enemies of us alcoholics are resentment, jealousy, envy, frustration and fear.
- 40:13Huh.
- 40:14Interesting.
- 40:15So, resentment is the number one offender back on 64 destroys more alcohols than anything else.
- 40:21For a minute, stems all forms of spiritual disease.
- 40:24For we have been not only mentally and physically ill.
- 40:27So, mentally, after I mess stuff up in my life, I go drink, physically, I take drink right after the physical craving, right?
- 40:37You know, we had been spiritually sick.
- 40:40Right.
- 40:40So mental physical, spiritual.
- 40:42When the spiritual mality is overcome, we straighten out mentally and physically.
- 40:47So, if I quit worrying about the middle, quit worrying about the physical, focus on the spiritual.
- 40:52It says I straighten up mentally and physically, right?
- 40:55And so in the family afterwards, it says, man.
- 41:02I'm not doing good with my...
- 41:07Okay, on page 127.
- 41:09bottom of the middle paragraph.
- 41:11So it says, for us, material well-being always follows spiritual progress.
- 41:16It never proceeded.
- 41:17So that's material well-being also, but go ahead of the, uh, spiritual.
- 41:22So spiritual is over everything.
- 41:24That's what this book is telling me, I think.
- 41:26It says in dealing with resentments, we set them on paper.
- 41:30We listed people, institutions and principles who we were angry.
- 41:34So if you're following me and want to just go through this work while I'm talking, that's cool.
- 41:38So the way I take do this and it's different from other people is far left corner of a piece of paper, right?
- 41:49who I was resentful at.
- 41:51And it could be either people, institutions and principles.
- 41:55And write their name.
- 41:56and I like college rule, but you could use wide rule or whatever.
- 41:59But, um, write a name and skip 8 luns and stay with a left sheet of paper and if you're in a notebook.
- 42:07Don't write on the right sheet of paper.
- 42:09I don't know if that's too confusing for me explaining this, but last sheet of paper.
- 42:13Far left, right name, skip 8 loans, right next name.
- 42:19If you got more than one resentment for that person, write their name again.
- 42:23Then skip 8 lines.
- 42:24And all we're doing is riding people, institutions and principles, institutions is.
- 42:31A lot of people getting some trouble with the law around these places and maybe that's an institution.
- 42:37Maybe it's a work.
- 42:38Maybe it's a school.
- 42:39Maybe it's a place of something, right?
- 42:42And principles or probably some simple things that you kind of grew up with.
- 42:46Like, men make the money.
- 42:49Or, you know, women do all the dishes, whatever that is, there's principles that like we grew up with or saying, I got, bless you.
- 42:58I know a guy that gets so mad when you say, bless you, after someone sneezes, you know, because it interrupts, and he's like, that's not anyways, it doesn't matter.
- 43:06That's a principle that some people live by.
- 43:08Whatever it is, list them out, and what's really cool is that's it for this part of this work, and next week we'll go through some more, but I think it's important to stop there, because it gives you a beginning, and it tells me on this other page right here.
- 43:24Well, the way I'll do this is next week we'll go through the other 3 columns.
- 43:28Oh, I'm not going to sit on a column each week, but it is important to know it says next launched out on a course of vigorous action.
- 43:38Anyways, guys, thank you for listening, man.
- 43:41So my brain's kind of all over the place.
- 43:43I got a kitty cat nulling at the door in my room where I'm recording this ad and maybe I like to, I like to take other people down.
- 43:52See, that's that's exactly what I'm talking about.
- 43:55Admitting he made me somewhat at fault.
- 43:57He is sure that other people are more to blame, even a kitty cat.
- 44:00I like to do, though.
- 44:01I like to take people down with the ship.
- 44:02But thank you guys for listening, man, like I, uh, it's been fun, and then I'll, we'll talk again next week.
