- 0:00Second Samuel chapter 12, here's we're going to do.
- 0:03We just, we just prayed. I want us to pray again, and
- 0:07just submit every faculty to this moment and ask the Lord to
- 0:11really help you allow this word to reach your heart, and ask the
- 0:15Lord to help me bring it from my heart to you.
- 0:19Lord, we do. Thank you.
- 0:20We believe that you are here, that your spirit has been given
- 0:23to the church for many reasons. And one of those reasons is that
- 0:27there would be boldness and courage and clarity.
- 0:30Your word says that we each have the anointing residing within us
- 0:34to know what it is that you have to say to us me that anointing
- 0:38come into action as we come to the Sacred Scriptures.
- 0:42May there be power. May there be even a sense of
- 0:45precision in our own lives and its application.
- 0:48It may Lord you be glorified in the faithfulness of the
- 0:52Declaration and The Obedience of the application.
- 0:55This is our desire and Jesus name, amen?
- 0:59Who was here last week? Who's your not last week?
- 1:04Okay, if you were here last week, I'm just going to do this
- 1:07for the sake of remembrance and to remind ourselves that Nathan
- 1:12has been sent by God to approach David.
- 1:15He came to David with a parable with a story and we dissected
- 1:20that story to try to understand the method and the message
- 1:23behind it. And I trust that if you were
- 1:26here, if you listen from abroad, you benefited greatly from just
- 1:29the first few verses of this chapter.
- 1:32But now tonight we are transitioning from this story.
- 1:35This allegory to plain speech, Nathan is going to go from
- 1:41veiling, his message to unveiling the message, and it's
- 1:45going to be sharp. It's going to be strong, it's
- 1:49going to be confrontational. It's going to be clear and
- 1:53trusting that from last week to this week.
- 1:56We will believe that what we've gained from, then we will gain
- 1:59even more. Now, as we come To this text, we
- 2:03will not complete this chapter which is okay, but we will take
- 2:06our time to look at Nathan second.
- 2:10Message to David. That is tied into the very
- 2:13reason why he came to him in the first place.
- 2:16Now, before you and I read these verses before, we actually look
- 2:19at this text you and I have to also be reminded of the package,
- 2:23in which it was delivered him. Look back at verse 1.
- 2:26With me quickly, I want you to be reminded who was that sent
- 2:30Nathan, and the Lord sent Nathan to David, the Lord.
- 2:36The Lord sent Nathan. Nathan was not just Israel's
- 2:41profit, at least one of them. Nathan was a personal friend to
- 2:46David, And the fact that the Lord chose this instrument to
- 2:51approach David teaches us, something not just about Nathan
- 2:56but about God, God sends a friend.
- 3:03To David a close companion. And we know that David had
- 3:08Nathan and high esteem, because with one of the sun's that
- 3:12Nathan rather David will have with Bathsheba.
- 3:15He names him, Nathan. He's going to name one of his
- 3:20sons. After this Prophet, even up to
- 3:23the end of David's life, when he is on his deathbed, their Nathan
- 3:27is watching over him and assuring that things will be put
- 3:30into place before he departs into Glory.
- 3:32Why? So Nathan is a close friend to
- 3:37David and the Lord hand-picked Nathan to deliver the message.
- 3:42Why? Because the Lord wanted to
- 3:44approach David as a friend. The Lord is going to expose this
- 3:50men sin and a very scathing way, but the Lord did not come to
- 3:56David his servant as an enemy. He came as a trusted friend.
- 4:04And I think that is filled with instruction for us when
- 4:09especially for those who are passionate about the honor of
- 4:12Jesus Christ. Especially for those who are
- 4:15passionate about God's people, walking straight and walking,
- 4:19according to the will of God and and have no issue approaching
- 4:22somebody in correcting them or rebuking them.
- 4:26Are you going not just with the love for the truth?
- 4:29But for the love, for the person who's going to receive that
- 4:31truth. That makes all the difference
- 4:34because God, here shows that he comes to restore, didn't come to
- 4:39bring down, it doesn't come to eradicate, all hope it doesn't
- 4:42come to prove a point and to win an argument.
- 4:45He comes to win the Hart, he comes to win the person and if
- 4:49we would be instrument in the hands of God and restoring
- 4:53brothers and sisters back to the truth, then realized that the
- 4:57Lord looks for those who love people, not just Doctrine, not
- 5:02just the all G, not, not just being right and being pure in
- 5:06your beliefs, or in your conduct for that matter, but to love the
- 5:11person that you're giving the truth, too.
- 5:14There's much more that we can say in that, but we will
- 5:16continue because we don't have much time, but as we come to
- 5:20these verses, remember, the package in which it is going to
- 5:22be delivered in, remember the instrument that God chose to
- 5:25bring it through? And we are going to organize our
- 5:28thoughts in these next verses in three different categories.
- 5:33The first category is going to be the error before the sin, the
- 5:40error before the sin Nathan is going.
- 5:44To reveal an error that led to the downfall of David.
- 5:48That's the first category. The second category is going to
- 5:51be the ruling of the sin. God is going to pronounce
- 5:57judgment on David, and he is going to determine the verdict.
- 6:04And the reason for this judgment Lastly, the last category are
- 6:09the consequences after the sin. So we have the error before the
- 6:14sin, the ruling of the sin. And then we're going to look at
- 6:18the consequences that follow this sin.
- 6:21And so we look at the first category in verse 7.
- 6:23And what do we see, Nathan said to David?
- 6:27You are the man I don't know, there's a lot of instances in
- 6:34the scripture where I would like to be to see and witness.
- 6:37I don't think this is one of them, you can just imagine what
- 6:40happened to the atmosphere. In that moment when he comes
- 6:44with this nice little Sunday, school story of a sheep of a
- 6:47lamb of a rich man of a poor man and it stirs David and David is
- 6:51in the place of the judge as he is hearing this and then all for
- 6:54a sudden the tables turn The tables turn on David from being
- 7:00positioned as the arbitrator to now the perpetrator.
- 7:04And now he's removed from the judgement seat and now he stands
- 7:07before the Judgment seat. And he stands before a holy God,
- 7:13it all changed with these words. You are the man in the Hebrews.
- 7:16Only two words. But here we see, you are the man
- 7:21and Nathan doesn't take a break. He continues by saying thus says
- 7:27the Lord. The god of Israel.
- 7:31I anointed you King over Israel. And I delivered you out of the
- 7:35hand of Saul and I gave you your Masters house and your Masters
- 7:40wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of
- 7:44Judah. And if this were to little, I
- 7:47would add to you as much more. Those two verses are under the
- 7:54category of the air before this in, if you were here in second
- 7:58Samuel, 11. Where this all started when
- 8:01David was on the rooftop, you will remember that we dissected
- 8:05and examine the failures before the ultimate downward spiral
- 8:10there were things before that contributed to David's ultimate
- 8:14crash. One of those things was the
- 8:17failure to deal with passions early on in his life.
- 8:21This is not just something that appeared out of nowhere.
- 8:22It was something that was fed and nurtured over time.
- 8:26The failure to conquer idleness, the failure to take heed to
- 8:30God's warnings. All these different failures
- 8:33were cracks in the foundation of David's faith, and an ultimately
- 8:37crumbled when the temperature was just right.
- 8:40But when you, and I come to the words of Nathan here, we
- 8:43realized that there is yet another flaw that he surfaces
- 8:46something that we didn't see before, but now comes to our
- 8:49attention, it's another serious problem, prior to the undoing of
- 8:55this man. Now, as you look at those two
- 8:57verses and you just look at the summary of what is being said,
- 9:01what is the indicator, what can we pinpoint and seeing what was
- 9:05a problem in David's life before ultimately a manifest into the
- 9:10series of sin? And the idea What's the error
- 9:16that the Lord highlights? He had forgotten.
- 9:26God, yes. But more specifically Look What
- 9:30the Lord is saying to him. He could have said you have
- 9:32forgotten me. I gave you.
- 9:37Your Masters house I gave you your Masters wives.
- 9:41I made you King over Israel. I made you and I presided your
- 9:46over my people. You know what, I see here.
- 9:51David not only lost sight of God.
- 9:54David lost sight of the Lord's personal dealings in his life.
- 10:00What God had given him. What God had protected him from
- 10:05what God had provided him in essence.
- 10:09David had become over time unmindful and he'd become.
- 10:14Yes forgetful. But more importantly,
- 10:17ungrateful. for what the Lord had done in his life and this
- 10:25led to a character issue who would have ever thought, this is
- 10:30so important who would have ever thought that ingratitude would
- 10:33have led to adultery who would have ever imagined that this
- 10:39deficiency in so many people's spirituality that we don't see
- 10:43the danger of who would have ever thought that ingratitude
- 10:47would have led to infidelity And that is not an exaggeration.
- 10:53That is not a subjective interpretation of this.
- 10:55That is a scriptural. Testimony from cover to cover
- 10:59that there is serious spiritual trouble headed for the person
- 11:04who refuses or is negligent in the practice of giving God
- 11:09continual. Thanks. when you read that ugly
- 11:14description of humanity in Romans chapter 1, all the
- 11:17Warped, perversion all the Craziness and people's behavior
- 11:23and their sexuality, all these different perversions, all these
- 11:27different things, they all stem from Romans 1:21 people forget
- 11:31that, that, that a people forgot or refuse rather to give honor
- 11:37to God glory to God. And what else?
- 11:40Thanks to him. They refused to give, thanks to
- 11:45God and that was the Gateway for all these other things to come
- 11:50crashing in all these plagues all this idolatry and all this
- 11:54covetousness were allowed to come in.
- 11:58We're permitted to come in due to one failure among different
- 12:01failures but one key foundational issue.
- 12:04A refusal to acknowledge God. And so, what Thanksgiving does,
- 12:11you know what it does? It acknowledges God as The
- 12:14Sovereign provider, protector, positioner, Of everything in our
- 12:21lives. That's what it does and it
- 12:25causes us to joyfully admit and accept that everything you and I
- 12:30have has been granted by a good father who knows exactly what we
- 12:35need for our joy and ultimately his glory.
- 12:39That is what gratitude does, it's more than just shooting
- 12:43off, empty words just because it's the polite thing to do it.
- 12:47Gratitude is much more significant than making our
- 12:49children seem appreciative of things outside of themselves.
- 12:52No, it will keep you in line. It will keep God in the place,
- 12:59his rightful place in our affections and in our worship
- 13:02and in our understanding of the events that take place in our
- 13:04lives. And that is exactly what David
- 13:07is missing here. He did not keep before him, the
- 13:13goodness of God. Personally, not not even just
- 13:16objectively what he's done. Universally that's important.
- 13:19God was specific. And I believe, the reason that
- 13:23God was specific here is also to imply that we must be specific
- 13:26with our Thanksgiving, like, detailed with what it is, that
- 13:30we are so thankful for or else. It won't have the full effect
- 13:34that it desires to have. But something else happens here
- 13:38in verse and it's in the last part of what the Lord says
- 13:40before he continues, look at the last phrase and if this were to
- 13:44little, I would add to you as much more.
- 13:49As much more. So more than just saying, David,
- 13:53you were capable of doing this because you forgot how good I've
- 13:59been to you. You do not remember what it,
- 14:04what it is that I've done for you more than that.
- 14:06He says, here that you've also failed to realize that
- 14:10everything you need is in me. See, the thing that led Davidson
- 14:15was not just the ingratitude that ingratitude was step one.
- 14:18Step two was, I can find good outside of God.
- 14:24I can add value to my life, though.
- 14:26The value that is promised to me is contrary to the contract that
- 14:30I have with God. And it's as though, the Lord is
- 14:34saying David. If you if you really felt like
- 14:37you were lacking if you really felt like you were missing
- 14:41something, why didn't you come to me?
- 14:46Why didn't you come to me? Because here's the promise of
- 14:49God that when you do honestly come to him.
- 14:52Even with that sense of irritation and frustration and
- 14:54emptiness and loneliness. Whatever the case may be the
- 14:57Lord based on this and many other promises, the Lord assures
- 15:01us that he will provide exactly what we need to experience
- 15:05wholeness again. Exactly what we need.
- 15:08If that is not true of our God, then we're all doomed.
- 15:12I assure you that we will all have our heads stuck in empty,
- 15:16broken dirty, cisterns for the rest of our lives.
- 15:19If this is not truth, if satisfied.
- 15:21Us faction in. God is a theory and not an
- 15:24experience. Then go eat and drink and be
- 15:27merry, we're just we're playing pretend here.
- 15:31But God's not playing pretend. He looks at his servant through
- 15:35Nathan's eyes. And he says, why didn't you just
- 15:38come to me? Why didn't you just come to me?
- 15:41See, David for a moment believed that if I'm with Bathsheba
- 15:45something good will happen? I will know something that God
- 15:48could not offer, and that's precisely what James is
- 15:51referring to. In James 116.
- 15:52You don't have to turn there. Do not be deceived.
- 15:54My beloved Brothers for every good and perfect gift comes from
- 15:59above. Again, that's not only to teach
- 16:03that we are to give God all the glory for every good and perfect
- 16:06thing. That's also to convey that
- 16:08everything that you think is good and perfect will only come
- 16:12from above. You're not going to find it
- 16:14anywhere else, it's going to be sourced in God.
- 16:17It's going to be coming from God, it's going to be delivered
- 16:19by God and it's different. The the gifts are different, but
- 16:23the giver is the same. If you go to anybody else,
- 16:25especially for those who are against God, contrary to his
- 16:29will then you're just inviting trouble into your life.
- 16:32Now, it's worth mentioning as a side, note that some people have
- 16:34trouble with what the Lord had said to David.
- 16:38What is troubling in that verse in verse a what sticks out to
- 16:41you something like really Lord, you are the one behind that any
- 16:44idea. Yes, did you hear it?
- 16:52Lord, you gave David. The plurality of wives that he
- 16:57had. In fact, Muslims will use this
- 17:01against Christians to try to prove that our God accepts and
- 17:06even condones and even provides a multiplicity of romantic
- 17:10relationships. And this, this this would be
- 17:14harder to defend if the Lord isolated that statement and
- 17:19removed everything else, right? If he had said, why did you do
- 17:22this? I gave you multiple wives, then
- 17:25it's very difficult to see different interpretation other
- 17:28than you could have been satisfied with the roster of
- 17:32women you had in your Palace. Why did you go find somebody
- 17:34else's? And that's how even some
- 17:36Christians interpret this and they just appeal to mystery.
- 17:39I just I guess God, allow polygamy for a season and now he
- 17:41doesn't not True. Add to that, there's no sense of
- 17:46immediate judgment upon David or anybody else in this time for
- 17:50that matter, for their different relationships.
- 17:53And so now you're in some kind of a dilemma right?
- 17:56Not so read it carefully. I gave you your Masters house
- 18:02and your Masters wives. Here's how people read it and I
- 18:06gave you your Masters house and your wives.
- 18:11Did he say, why? Good, your Masters wives.
- 18:18Who was David's master? Saul Saul?
- 18:26See again, if you leave that part in isolation, you might
- 18:28have a case. But the fact that that statement
- 18:31is preceded and followed by other elements that focus in on
- 18:36what saw had and the transfer of Sol's possessions over to David
- 18:41on now, it makes sense. What the Lord is saying, is all
- 18:45that, Saul had his kingdom, his authority, his possessions
- 18:50everything. I gave it to you without your
- 18:54effort without out your dabbling without your intervention.
- 18:58I'm the one who gave you the authority that you're enjoying.
- 19:03The Graces the gifts, all these things, I'm giving it over to
- 19:07you. And so the relationship with
- 19:08these Masters wives is something that was common in that culture
- 19:11that when there is a succeeding king or a kingdom, you would
- 19:14even have the previous owner so to speak and who ever lived with
- 19:19him to be given over to the new king.
- 19:22And so these women were just accommodations to the Palace.
- 19:25There is no indication that David had any sexual relations
- 19:29or married any of Saul's woman, they were just there.
- 19:33They were just there occupying, something and David had
- 19:35responsibility over them. There is no such thing as David
- 19:39being given multiple wives, by a holy God, who had instituted,
- 19:43what marriage was from the beginning.
- 19:45That makes sense. Keep that.
- 19:47In mind when somebody tries to convince you of polygamy, for
- 19:49whatever strange reason. They are behind the sin.
- 19:56If you want to know ultimate protection, if you want to have
- 19:59a flood gate against Temptation and covetousness and all these
- 20:03ugly things be thankful always even when it's hard to be.
- 20:09I can assure you, if you are living in America, you can have
- 20:12a list of 100 things to be thankful for every single day.
- 20:16Does it matter how difficult things are?
- 20:20Give God that do and watch. I will happen to your heart
- 20:24failed to do that. And I'm going to tell you from
- 20:26this point on, it will get very very interesting in terms of
- 20:29what you will be attracted to In this life, they are behind this.
- 20:33And let's go to the second credit category, the ruling of
- 20:36the sin. Verse 9.
- 20:40Why have you despise the word of the Lord to do?
- 20:44What is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah.
- 20:48The hittite with the sword. And I've taken his wife to be
- 20:52your wife and have killed him with the sword of the ammonites.
- 20:59In these verses you and I will see how the Lord judges sin, how
- 21:04he judges. And we know, he judges sin but
- 21:06how does he judge sin? How did he determine someone's
- 21:09verdict? What does he look for?
- 21:11What kind of evidence is he constantly bringing before us?
- 21:16And that's important to know because man's Judgment of sin
- 21:19man's condemnation of wrong. And what he often Praises his
- 21:22skewed and Compares it to what God prizes.
- 21:24And what he, what he Does not approve of.
- 21:30And the the Lord being the judge of all the Earth.
- 21:34Calls us to understand what it is, exactly.
- 21:36He is judging And what using I see here in the first question
- 21:40is important, why have you despise the word of the Lord?
- 21:45Why have you despise the word of the Lord?
- 21:48The first thing that the Lord brings up in the ruling of this
- 21:51man's sin, is his attitude towards the word of God.
- 21:55Now, it is true. That David prove to despise the
- 21:58word of the Lord by breaking the law.
- 22:01That's obvious But can we not say that David already had this
- 22:07defiant attitude towards the word of God before?
- 22:10Even he committed the sin. It was premeditated.
- 22:13It's obvious that in his contemplation, he cancelled out,
- 22:17totally God's opinion on the matter.
- 22:19And so what led to this in was a Defiance of the word of God.
- 22:23It wasn't just proven after everything happened.
- 22:26The seed of it was there, it's the very thing that encouraged
- 22:29him to break God's law. And that's important for us to
- 22:32realize because the Lord did not criticize David and say you did
- 22:36not know the word of the Lord. He already proved earlier by
- 22:40referring to Exodus 22:1 that he knew the word of the Lord.
- 22:43If you stole the Sheep you got to give back for that's in the
- 22:46law. So he knew the word of the Lord,
- 22:49the issue here is the attitude. And that means for us, that the
- 22:56estimation of the written word of God will ultimately determine
- 23:00our submission to what it calls for our convictions around.
- 23:05This things will determine our conduct, it will not the
- 23:09knowledge of it, your conviction behind what you acquire, as
- 23:13knowledge that is what will be the driver's seat of where we go
- 23:18in our growth and godliness, or in the other direction.
- 23:22And one way to have a high view of the word of God, if you
- 23:24really want to see the word of God, for what it is and allowed
- 23:27the Brilliance of it to have an effect on your soul, then you
- 23:30got to see what it says of itself and then believe it, can
- 23:33I show you how in this case, David failed to see the word of
- 23:36God for How Great and Mighty. It was look at verse 10 again.
- 23:42Now, therefore the sword shall never depart from your house.
- 23:46Now look what he says, because you have despised me.
- 23:52Verse 9. He says why have you despised
- 23:56the word of the Lord? The Lord is still speaking of
- 23:58verse 10. And then he goes on to say the
- 24:01sword will never depart from your house because you despised
- 24:06me. Here's the conclusion, you put
- 24:11those two statements together and this is what you have to
- 24:14despise. God's word is to despise God
- 24:16himself. To despise God's word is to
- 24:19despise himself. People have this strange idea
- 24:24that those two things are mutually exclusive that I can
- 24:29have my personal relationship with God, and God is pleased
- 24:32with me. And he's happy with me and all
- 24:33these different things. And yet, they have zero regard
- 24:36for the divine revelation that has been made available to all
- 24:40of us. With Nathan reveals shears that
- 24:44you've despised. Not just the law, but the law
- 24:47Giver because you cannot separate those two things.
- 24:51When a person says that they desire to know.
- 24:53God, do you know how you measure that?
- 24:56What do they do with the word of God?
- 24:59You read it, you study it, you examine it.
- 25:01You cherish you memorize it, you talk about it.
- 25:03Is that not right? Sure, in the beginning was the
- 25:09word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.
- 25:10Yes. You can't separate those two
- 25:13realities. You can't even separate the word
- 25:14in the spirit. Jesus says, my words are spirit
- 25:17and life. So these people say, I'm not a,
- 25:19I'm not a word person. I'm a holy spirit person.
- 25:21What are you talking about? But you see here among many
- 25:26other things, we have another testimony that the the very
- 25:30object in your hands right now. Is directly correlated to the
- 25:34person who gave it to us. So when a person says I want to
- 25:38know the will of God well okay if you want to know the will of
- 25:40God then you'll take the time to discover what his will is it's
- 25:43not just some mystery thing that you just kind of skip through
- 25:47life with and interpret matters in your own hands.
- 25:50No no what a person says or claims that they are faithful to
- 25:53God. Then they will equally have a
- 25:56view of the ultimate authority of the word of God.
- 26:00Show me a person's response and A ship to the word and I have
- 26:04the substantial evidence to know their walk with God.
- 26:09The simple as that you can't separate those things, doesn't
- 26:12matter how beautiful they sing. Does it.
- 26:14Matter how emotional they are about spiritual realities.
- 26:18The word, it's the word. You've not just despise the word
- 26:24of the Lord. You've despised the Lord.
- 26:27David It's not draw you closer to the scriptures.
- 26:31I hope it does because this is the means by which we come to
- 26:35know our God and the Lords, indictment of David sins here.
- 26:41Perhaps we've noticed that there was a particular summary because
- 26:44when we read second Samuel 11, it was an extensive play,
- 26:48Playbook of his craftiness and his scheme to sin, but when the
- 26:52Lord brings it to him, he summarizes it and just a verse
- 26:56or two. Because he sees pass through it
- 27:01pass through what the goal of David's ambition is second,
- 27:04Samuel 11 is really obvious. He wanted to distance himself as
- 27:07much as possible, from being A suspicious candidate for
- 27:14bathsheba's pregnancy and for the death of Uriah.
- 27:17He wanted to cover the tracks and he want to remove himself as
- 27:20much as possible. So he gets job involved.
- 27:22He gives them instructions to put you right in the front
- 27:24lines. He has the ammonites kill him,
- 27:25make it look like an accident instead of an assassination and
- 27:29so with all of that the Lord comes now and directly says you
- 27:34have killed him. You did it?
- 27:39Was in the ammonites. It wasn't a thing of War wasn't
- 27:41joab. It wasn't anything other than
- 27:43the fact that you did it And that's important if we want to
- 27:48realize how the judge of the earth judges and how he will
- 27:50judge the world and know this, that so many people attempt to
- 27:53justify their wrong or lighten, the burden on their conscience
- 27:58by doing what by manipulating circumstances.
- 28:02So that they are not the direct agents of the evil. so they
- 28:08hire, they trick, they lie and they send, and they pay, and
- 28:12they do all these things, because there's something
- 28:14deceitful about our hearts that says, if I am not the, the
- 28:18player holding the ball, if I'm just calling the shots from the
- 28:21sidelines, then surely, I am not as guilty as an accomplice From
- 28:27an accomplice, another main actor.
- 28:29Surely my guilt is not as severe and the Lord sees passed through
- 28:32all that trickery, all the exploitation, And he puts the
- 28:37pieces together. The all-knowing one and knows
- 28:39exactly the source, who knows exactly who is guilty he sees
- 28:43past the, the facade and everything else that we try to
- 28:46deceive people with and he says, you are the man.
- 28:51You're the man. Now, another thing that I see
- 28:55here is that David's Grievous sin, according to the heart of
- 28:58God, that is grieved. Look what he says here.
- 28:59At the end of verse 9 and have killed them with the sword of
- 29:02the ammonites. He brings that up.
- 29:06What grieved God's heart? Was that David cooperated with
- 29:10the Enemy? with the enemies of Israel with
- 29:14the enemies of the god of Israel to kill who one of God's people
- 29:19to harm one of God's Own and not just anybody a faithful man like
- 29:23Uriah And so the Lord sees it as a terrible thing, pay attention
- 29:28to this, when the people of God partner with the world to do
- 29:33damage to the people of God. How is that possible today?
- 29:36I don't have a sword. We don't go to war, we don't
- 29:38have ammonites. Oh, there's so many indications.
- 29:41An example of it. But you remember, I brought this
- 29:43up, not too long ago, when Paul was overwhelmed almost by the
- 29:48idea that a Believer was going out to those who have no
- 29:52standing in the church to determine Over another believer.
- 29:57Is that any different than David hiring?
- 29:59The sort of the ammonites to kill one of the Israelites?
- 30:03How is it that you are going to those who are not righteous to
- 30:07determine the fate of the righteous better to take a loss?
- 30:13Do you not trust in the wisdom of my word to determine and
- 30:16settle disputes? Do you not have any fear of God?
- 30:20To realize that there is a watching world that wants to see
- 30:23where I were different. And what we have to offer is
- 30:25different and that is just one example of many how it is
- 30:29possible to hire the sword of those outside of the camp of God
- 30:35to the damage to those who reside in our own camp.
- 30:39So we see here that there are many examples and possibilities
- 30:42of how we can grieve God. And one of the ways that we
- 30:44grieve God is that when we get the world involved, with the
- 30:47Affairs of the church with the people of God, it's serious.
- 30:52And he takes it into account, and he will discipline those who
- 30:55have no fear in this regard. We looked at the error behind
- 31:01the sin. We looked at part, the ruling of
- 31:05the sin and now we look at the consequences that followed the
- 31:08sin and that's in the next few verses here.
- 31:11In verse 11, thus says the Lord Behold, I will raise up evil
- 31:17against you out of your own house.
- 31:21And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them
- 31:23to your neighbor and he shall lie with your wives in the sight
- 31:26of his son of this son for you did it secretly, but I will do
- 31:31this thing before all Israel and before the sun.
- 31:38We're going to look at David's response in a moment, but let's
- 31:41break this down. We see here that the punishment
- 31:45of the Kings evil is threefold depending on how you break it
- 31:48down, and the division is very obvious.
- 31:50When you look at verse 10, the first thing is this, therefore,
- 31:53the sword shall never depart from your house, and we've
- 31:57touched on that that from this chapter, moving forward to the
- 32:00rest of this book. Even into First Kings chapter
- 32:03one, there will be internal strife to the point of death
- 32:06until David himself dies. And even after that, and we saw
- 32:10that with four of his own Sons, right?
- 32:13Who were the sons again? As a quiz.
- 32:17Absalom is one? Yes.
- 32:19I'm known as the one. Yes.
- 32:22I didn't, I just a third and who's the last, the unnamed
- 32:25baby? That's going to be inflicted
- 32:27with a disease in the next few verses.
- 32:30So the Lord even took David's measurement of judgment when he
- 32:33said that sheep should be given over with fourfold.
- 32:36Restitution, you want to you for fold, then, here's four foot.
- 32:39I'm going to kill four of your Lambs.
- 32:43And four of the sons would receive Bloodshed and experience
- 32:46Bloodshed you so Bloodshed you reap bloodshed.
- 32:50The second thing here that we see is that there would be evil
- 32:55against you out of your own house.
- 32:57Now isn't that the same thing, not necessarily?
- 33:00When do you believe that was fulfilled?
- 33:01Because it is fulfilled and found in the scriptures.
- 33:03When do we see evil arising within David's house to come
- 33:07against David himself? Good Absalom, the Revolt of his
- 33:11son who stole the hearts of the nation of Israel and himself to
- 33:15usurp the authority of the throne to capture the throne and
- 33:18to push his father out of the boundary.
- 33:20Is of Israel and in declares civil war against him.
- 33:24So, David himself with know, the pain of betrayal, David himself
- 33:29with taste, his own medicine of betrayal, not just Bloodshed,
- 33:33but betrayal. And lastly, we see something
- 33:36else mentioned here. It says that he, the neighbor
- 33:40shall lie with your own wives and the sight of this son.
- 33:45You did it privately. I'm going to make this a public
- 33:47matter. When was that fulfilled?
- 33:51Good Absalom. Now I want you to see with your
- 33:54own eyes to see how precise the judgments of God are.
- 33:58Look at 2nd Samuel here and verse 21 of chapter 16.
- 34:05Fast forward a few chapters. Look at 2nd Samuel 1621 I
- 34:14thoughtful said to Absalom. He said to Absalom.
- 34:20Go into your father's concubines, whom he has left to
- 34:24keep the house and all Israel will hear what you have made
- 34:28yourself a stench that you have made yourself a stench to your
- 34:31father and the hands of all who are with, you will be
- 34:34strengthened. No, hesitation absalom's part.
- 34:38Look at verse 22. So they pitched a tent for
- 34:41Absalom on the roof. And Absalom went into his
- 34:44father's. Concubines in the sight of all
- 34:46Israel, very despicable public demonstration of one's depravity
- 34:51and disrespect, but it was a fulfillment of Prophecy was just
- 34:55an eerily coincidental thing. God in his Providence, use the
- 34:59means of absalom's rebellion to chastise his servant David and
- 35:04it was so precise. Reread verse 22, what do we
- 35:08read? So, they pitched a tent for
- 35:10Absalom wear. Isn't that where all started?
- 35:17It all started on a roof. And here God is chastising even
- 35:22on a roof. And it's even more, more
- 35:25specific than that. You guys, if you're a few
- 35:28Maranatha school, will remember this, who was at the I felt
- 35:31full, is he a random counselor to David good?
- 35:34He's not. Can I show you who he is?
- 35:36If you don't know for those who know, don't say, it don't ruin.
- 35:39The surprise. For those who don't know, if you
- 35:41want to know who a he fell for Liz and you have to go to 2nd
- 35:43Samuel. 23:2 second Samuel 23 briefly.
- 35:48In this chapter, you have a list of the Mighty Men of David.
- 35:54Second Samuel 23. Look here down verse 34 and you
- 35:58will see exactly who this man is thoughtful is We read in verse
- 36:0534 at La Follette, the son of Akash by of Makkah.
- 36:09And I am the son of a heath offal.
- 36:12So this mantle ayam is ranked among the Mighty Men of David.
- 36:19This Alliance sound familiar Our names important in the Bible.
- 36:27Oh yes there's a holy spirit, waste any word in the
- 36:30scriptures. Absolutely not.
- 36:33Well, I am the son of a heath. Offal was one of the Mighty Men
- 36:39of David second Samuel 11 again where it all started.
- 36:44Second Samuel, 11, Look at verse 2.
- 36:49It happened late one afternoon when David arose from his couch,
- 36:54and was walking on the roof of the King's house that he saw
- 36:57from the roof, a woman bathing. And the woman was very beautiful
- 37:00and David sent and inquired about the woman.
- 37:03And one said, is this not Bathsheba the daughter of lion.
- 37:12The wife of Uriah, the hittite. A lion was one of the Mighty Men
- 37:17of David al-ayam was also the father of Bathsheba a lion was
- 37:23the son of A heath offal a heath olfa was bathsheba's Grandpa.
- 37:33Is it? No wonder why he partnered with
- 37:35Absalom to kill David. You touched my granddaughter and
- 37:42you killed her husband? I will make sure to crush you
- 37:46into fine powder. so I thought for knew about it and you're
- 37:52going to discover very important lessons about bitterness we all
- 37:55will when we come to a heath offal in the coming weeks So we
- 38:00see here, how precise God's chastisement is.
- 38:04Now we come back and we look at the list of things that David
- 38:08would have to endure. And part of us, part of us,
- 38:11looks at that. And we kind of, we kind of say,
- 38:12yes, David deserves. He deserves to be disciplined,
- 38:16but this seems kind of intense. I mean he's going to endure for
- 38:20the rest of his life, one thing. After the next it's not going to
- 38:25be easy for David from this time on And we might wonder is this
- 38:30too much. And I'll tell you the answer by
- 38:34the end of the Bible study, but I also want to make mention of
- 38:36this. We can debate all we want about
- 38:39what's going on here, but one thing is for certain from cover
- 38:41to cover. There is this law at work and
- 38:44it's still at work today. That sins have different
- 38:48consequences, some are more lasting, some are not as
- 38:53permanent. And though, we might be able to
- 38:57predict some of the ramifications of our trespasses,
- 39:01ultimately it is unpredictable to determine the full sequence
- 39:07of what our sin can produce in our lives, the outcome of it and
- 39:13I think, yeah, again, you can, you can determine some level of
- 39:15it, the position of the person, the ministry of the person, the
- 39:18role of that, all these different things, but really,
- 39:21you can't figure it out. And I think that puts a whole
- 39:25Holy fear in us, that should put a fear in us because we want to
- 39:29try to plan our sin and how we can limit the pain.
- 39:34We know that it's going to hurt things, we know it's going to
- 39:36hurt us, we know that and we try to isn't that in a part of are
- 39:38scheming to try to try to restrict as much of the
- 39:41collateral damage as possible. And God gives us so many
- 39:46examples of how that is not controllable on our part.
- 39:49And I want to show it to you. One example, I mean there's so
- 39:51many examples, but let me give you one example.
- 39:53The thing that came to mind was the ten plagues of Egypt saying,
- 39:56huh, ten plagues of Egypt, why? So many lessons about the 10
- 40:00plagues? And one of the lessons that I
- 40:02took from it personally, was that the effects of each plagues
- 40:06were different. Not always describe, but in some
- 40:09cases different from one another.
- 40:11So the plagues were not just different, but even the result
- 40:14of the Plagues on Egypt were different and I believe that's a
- 40:17picture because those plagues were the acts of Judgment of God
- 40:21Force. Pharaohs Rebellion.
- 40:23It's a picture of what happens with arson at times.
- 40:26Can I show it to you? Here's the plague, the eighth
- 40:28plagued with the locusts. It's an exodus 10.
- 40:34And when you see this, you're going to realize that's that's
- 40:40quite interesting. In Exodus, 10.
- 40:44Farrell wants the Locust to leave.
- 40:45I don't blame him and he says, in verse 17, it says here.
- 40:49Now, therefore, forgive my sin. Please only this once and plead
- 40:53with the Lord. Your God, only to remove this
- 40:55death from me. So, here's a man, who's saying,
- 40:57I want this out of here. I want to be removed from all of
- 41:00this chaos and all of this destruction.
- 41:02So, Verse 18, he went out from pharaoh and pleaded with the
- 41:05Lord and the Lord turned the wind into a very strong West
- 41:10Wind. Now, what happens, which lifted
- 41:13the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea.
- 41:15Not a single Locus was left in all the country of Egypt.
- 41:22That's the grace of God. The moment this man repents the
- 41:27strong Supernatural. Wind picks up all these ugly
- 41:30bugs. And catapults them into the
- 41:33ocean in a moment. And we're told specifically not
- 41:37one, hideous Locust was found in anybody shoe or covered nothing,
- 41:43they're all dispelled. Did that happen with every
- 41:46plague? Go to the second plague in
- 41:49Exodus 8. We're not dealing with locusts.
- 41:53You're now, we're dealing with frogs.
- 41:56Equally questionable as a pet Maybe.
- 42:02In verse 13. What do you read of Exodus 8?
- 42:05Pharaoh wants to see these things go?
- 42:07I don't blame him. And in verse 13, we read and the
- 42:10Lord did according to the word of Moses, the frogs died out in
- 42:15the houses, the courtyards and the fields, and they gather them
- 42:19together and heaps and the land stank.
- 42:24No, strong West Wind, no Supernatural.
- 42:28Force to clean up the courtyards, and the front yards
- 42:31and the driveways God allowed the frogs to die and for them to
- 42:38scoop it up themselves and it actually produced an odor,
- 42:43across the land, some sins will stink more than others.
- 42:50Some sins will leave deeper scars and others.
- 42:52Some sins will leave a deeper and a more potent odor than
- 42:57others. Others.
- 42:58Well, how do I determine you can't?
- 43:00You can't just avoid all sin. That's a good idea.
- 43:03Isn't it? Just avoid all playing so we
- 43:05don't want any of it. And so we see here that we
- 43:10cannot forecast what this thing will lead us to.
- 43:13So just avoid it altogether and in David's case.
- 43:17So, there are different adulterous of his time.
- 43:19Different adulterous throughout scripture in his case, and God's
- 43:22perfect. Wisdom allowed things to stink.
- 43:27A little bit longer. Than one would wish.
- 43:30For remember that you can never determine what sin will produce.
- 43:37You don't know how long it will pollute, you don't know how long
- 43:39it is to deal with the damage that it causes.
- 43:42Sometimes it's years, sometimes overnight, it's as though
- 43:45nothing had happened, the day before, And there is no
- 43:50instruction given to us. And I thank God for it because
- 43:53we are tricky with our flesh, to show us how we can avoid the
- 43:57least amount of problems because of our sin and David hears, all
- 44:02of this, he sees all of this, he registers all of this.
- 44:06And after this blistering words, that come from the mouth of this
- 44:09prophet, he is ready to respond. And the way that David responds
- 44:14and this is how we're going to end is a wonderful glorious
- 44:18instructional Elation of what true repentance looks like.
- 44:23What true repentance looks like and look at it with me here in
- 44:27verse 13 of chapter 12. David said to Nathan, I've
- 44:34sinned against the Lord. That moved me when I read it
- 44:40today, that moved my heart to the core.
- 44:43David said to Nathan. I've sinned against the Lord.
- 44:49You want to see the fleshed-out version of that?
- 44:51You know what, song to turn to right, you know, have to turn
- 44:53there were not going to turn there tonight.
- 44:55Psalm 1 Psalm 51. Psalm 51 is the journal entry of
- 45:01verse 13. It's after David's, at back, and
- 45:05really thought and meditate, and let that truth of the
- 45:07chastisement of the Lord sitting upon his soul and he, he just
- 45:12writes out Psalm 51. Don't let the brevity of this
- 45:17confession fool. You don't let it cause you to
- 45:20judge this man's sincerity. In fact, the brevity of it makes
- 45:25it so beautiful, you know, sometimes we look at how people
- 45:30respond to sin or their failure and we look for external
- 45:33evidence, right? We look for things that they do
- 45:37or things that they don't do and things that they say, and the
- 45:42level of tears that they can gather up in a cup, whatever the
- 45:44case may be, when you and I have no idea what's going on in their
- 45:49hearts. See before the prophet, you know
- 45:52what he does. He says one thing I have sinned
- 45:55against the Lord, you know, what was happening in his heart?
- 45:56Psalm 51. Psalm 51.
- 46:00So you and I have to understand that the Lord the same way he
- 46:03sees the motives of somebody send the reason for their sin.
- 46:06He sees the repentance of that sin, just as clearly And I think
- 46:11what you see here is an encouragement.
- 46:13Listen, if you are in sin tonight, what's not going to
- 46:16impress, God's pardon in your life, is your poetic expression
- 46:20of how wrong you've been. It's not going to be the
- 46:23duration of your dejection. It's not going to be anything
- 46:26other than the sincerity of the Contrition of your heart.
- 46:30That is all that moves, the heart of the Lord.
- 46:32That's it. And it's as plain as simple as
- 46:35that. And I praise God for that.
- 46:38And David here shows us that you can be in one breath broken and
- 46:44when God's favor again, because God tells him, he assures him,
- 46:47you are pardoned. You are forgiven after one
- 46:50statement, after one simple statement like that, And that
- 46:55might offend people more than the actual discipline that God
- 46:58gives to this, man. The fact that the Lord is
- 47:01willing to be so quick to forgive him.
- 47:05Now, I'm going to get to in a moment.
- 47:06What do you see in David's confession, it's one sentence,
- 47:08but what do you see in it? That's so significant.
- 47:20Yes. Sure.
- 47:27So you minted it to a person. Sure.
- 47:31Yes. Against the Lord, I have sinned
- 47:36against Uriah know. I've sinned against Bathsheba
- 47:39know, I've sinned against the government know, I've sinned
- 47:43against the Lord. The primary offender.
- 47:50And the effendi here, rather is the Lord himself.
- 47:53So before, even not that he denied the fact that he sent
- 47:55against other people. But here's the realization I
- 47:58violated and harmed and wounded, The God Who made the Covenant of
- 48:03marriage, I hurt. And I broke the law of the one
- 48:08who gave life to her Uriah, who takes the life of man, and I
- 48:11took that upon myself, I'm the one who stepped out of bounds
- 48:15with the one who gave me everything that I have.
- 48:19True repentance primarily recognizes God being offended.
- 48:28David here is not spilling his heart open because of what's
- 48:31going to come to him now. David here is not even as
- 48:34disturbed about the fact that Uriah is gone in bathsheba's,
- 48:37not really his legitimate wife, that's not what burdens him,
- 48:41build that is part of it. What consumes this man is I
- 48:45fractured my fellowship with almighty God and this broke him
- 48:51because he realized who God was and the grand scheme of
- 48:55everything. And so here we see that true
- 48:59repentance prioritises, the realization of what your sin is
- 49:05done with the vertical relationship that you and I
- 49:07cherish and love and enjoy. I've seen Christians that have
- 49:11repented and had nothing to do with God being offended.
- 49:16I've seen it in their confession in their testimonies is not
- 49:19about God. It's about what they did to
- 49:21their mom and how they disappointed, a dad growing up
- 49:25and how they heard this person and how they hurt their church.
- 49:28That's fine and dandy, Where's God?
- 49:31Where's God? And I'm telling you of God is
- 49:33not in the confession. That might be an insight to
- 49:37prove that you didn't have God in mind when you sinned or
- 49:39before you even considered sinning.
- 49:42What do I mean by that? That this this is more than just
- 49:47law keeping and having a nice reputation among the church.
- 49:51This is about my walk with almighty God.
- 49:55And David realized that that's the first thing that comes to
- 49:58his mind. That's the first thing that
- 49:59comes out of his mouth but there's a second point that I
- 50:02want to draw to your attention, the brevity of it showcases The
- 50:08exclusion of excuses. I've sinned against the Lord
- 50:14compare that with Saul's repentance or supposed
- 50:16repentance, remember that Samuel comes on the scene?
- 50:19I've obeyed the Lord then he justifies his partial obedience
- 50:23then he says it again and have sacrificed this for the Lord,
- 50:26this is set apart for Lord and he just keeps going until
- 50:28finally says. Okay, fine.
- 50:29I've sinned against the Lord and his word for I feared the people
- 50:32now saying, oh can you come with me?
- 50:33So we go to the house of God and it makes it look like they, you
- 50:36know, you're actually in good terms with me and I'm in.
- 50:38Good terms with God, it just Just the word vomit is so
- 50:43obvious and it's actually, it's actually a revelation of how his
- 50:48heart was not really broken. He could say so much, because
- 50:50his heart was still so light. And David just has one
- 50:55statement. And he says, I have no excuses.
- 51:01You know what some people do? Well yeah.
- 51:03I've sinned against the Lord but wife's in But True Confession.
- 51:08Never has the word butt in it. Never True Confession.
- 51:14Never has the word butt in it. Yeah, okay, yeah, you're right.
- 51:19Nathan. But you know, she should have
- 51:20been baiting like that. She knows that I go up on the
- 51:22roof. She knows that I can see all
- 51:23things from that point. She shouldn't have done, that's
- 51:25kind of her fault. Yeah.
- 51:27Okay. I did it.
- 51:28Yeah. But, you know, I was hoping that
- 51:32the ammonites really wouldn't have killed the maybe wounded.
- 51:34I don't know. Like, he didn't say anything of
- 51:36that. These, what about job?
- 51:37You know, job kind of, was, was in the night, like, he didn't
- 51:40know the full thing, but he should have at least stood up to
- 51:42me. We should we get Joe.
- 51:43I've been to this conference about nothing.
- 51:48I've sinned against the Lord and that's what our human nature
- 51:51wants to do. Right.
- 51:51It's ever since the beginning, we want to point the finger, we
- 51:54want to bounce the problems off of us and the full
- 51:57accountability and at least share it with somebody else.
- 52:00Here's the thing. When you have God in the
- 52:02equation, realize that it's your sin, regardless of the sin, that
- 52:08instigated you to sin it. Never justifies your sin and it
- 52:14primarily your sin. Affects your vertical
- 52:16relationship with the Lord. So let the Good deal with other
- 52:18people's wrongs. Let the Lord deal with other
- 52:22people's wrongs, even if their wrongs was mixed into.
- 52:26Why you did that? And why you said that just just
- 52:29cancel all of that and just realize.
- 52:32Okay, I sinned and it affected my relationship with the Lord.
- 52:36Therefore I have sinned against the Lord.
- 52:42Isn't that refreshing to hear? And there is a beauty in the
- 52:48Simplicity of this. There is just this this holy
- 52:51moment in the quietness of David.
- 52:54Now I told you, I wouldn't have want to been there when he says
- 52:56you are the man, but I would like to peek my head.
- 52:59When David said, I have sinned against the Lord, I would have
- 53:02loved to just look through those Royal curtains.
- 53:04And see how he looked? Did he have his head down with
- 53:08her tears? That he whispered that he
- 53:12shouted. Here's Nathan and David and
- 53:18David says, I have sinned against the Lord. and what so
- 53:25moves me not just how he does not include one other excuse,
- 53:32But how Nathan responds and Nathan said to David in the same
- 53:37verse, the Lord has also put away your sin, you shall not
- 53:39die. How quick is that?
- 53:43Are you offended by that? What are you offended by more?
- 53:48The list of judgments that were going to be on David's life
- 53:51until he went into Glory or how quick?
- 53:56How swift forgiveness came to him, the moment he confessed.
- 54:02Some would be offended by that. It's just, that's all it takes.
- 54:04I've sinned against the Lord. Yeah, if it's just lip service,
- 54:09but if there's a Psalm 51 roaring in your soul, that's a
- 54:13different story. I've sinned against the Lord,
- 54:16and right there, this Prophet who has these special antennas
- 54:19to hear from Heaven, gets a word.
- 54:21You're forgiven. You're forgiven Dina, why?
- 54:25Because the same psalmist, who send penned in Psalm 86 5.
- 54:30Unfortunately, you won't see this in the ESV.
- 54:32You'll see it in the King, James, new King, James and ASB.
- 54:37We're told in Psalm 86 five that the Lord is ready to forgive.
- 54:43The ESV says good and forgiving that's nice.
- 54:45But you look at the Hebrew ready to forgive You know what?
- 54:50That tells me? He's waiting to forgive.
- 54:53He's right there. Ready to swing the door open.
- 54:55Well, what is he waiting for the knock of repentance on our end.
- 54:59That's what he's waiting for. So the Readiness to forgive is
- 55:04triggered by our Readiness to repent.
- 55:08Genuinely void of excuse void, of pointing the fingers void of
- 55:15the butts. And just saying it's obvious.
- 55:19It's clear. I've sinned against God and he
- 55:23says, in Psalm 51 against the in the only have I sinned And the
- 55:29Lord is willing to forgive when a man comes broken like this
- 55:32man, does no scene no pounding against the wall.
- 55:38No probation time on God's part, by the way, I have sinned
- 55:42against the lord. Well, okay, good.
- 55:44That's nice and Danny go into that penalty box for 7 days and
- 55:47come back, and let's see if your heart is just a smashed as it is
- 55:50now. And then I'll determine if you
- 55:51can have fellowship with me again.
- 55:52That's not God. That's man, huh?
- 55:58We're just all a bunch of Jonah's, right?
- 56:02Wanting to look at the city of Chicago and say, are all going
- 56:05to hell and you deserve it, and the Lord wants to save them and
- 56:10were like, Lord, you sure. Look at all the Bloodshed.
- 56:12Look at all the abortion. Look at all the gangs
- 56:15slaughtering each other. And the whole point of the Book
- 56:19of John, I said there's many times and I can't stop saying it
- 56:21because it moves me such a short prophetic book, but it has such
- 56:26powerful implications. Though.
- 56:28The point of the Book of Jonah is men, even the greatest men,
- 56:31even the greatest prophets are less merciful than our God is.
- 56:37They're less quick to forgive than our God.
- 56:40They are less tender and soft and inviting, and welcoming than
- 56:44our God. And God is so tender, even in
- 56:46the Book of Jonah itself. God, even mentions the death of
- 56:49the cattle. He even thinks about the life of
- 56:53the animals. Now, I'm not advocating, animal
- 56:56rights here and sheep are on the same level as humans.
- 56:59And if a dog drowns in your neighbor's, Johnny, maybe you
- 57:01can argue which one has more worth than that's crazy stuff,
- 57:05but God does have value in appreciation for life.
- 57:07All life. And we see here that this man is
- 57:12receiving that forgiveness, because God was ready to
- 57:16forgive. But look what happens here in
- 57:19verse 14. Nevertheless, Nathan says,
- 57:23because by this deed, you have utterly scorned the Lord, the
- 57:27child who is born to you shall die. the Nathan went to his
- 57:33house, he talked about concluding his sermon, Talk
- 57:40about closing Friday, night bible study with that.
- 57:45You're forgiven your sins. Put aside your son.
- 57:50He's going to die. No apologies.
- 57:55No, lengthy explanation, no theological presentation of why
- 57:59God allows us though. We do have the rest of the Bible
- 58:01to determine why this is the case.
- 58:05Let me end on this thought and I will end here because we're not
- 58:08going to touch any other verse. The Lord's, pardon for our sin
- 58:15is not his only goal in our sanctification.
- 58:20God eagerly desires to also deal with the presence of sin in our
- 58:24lives and it's power in our lives simultaneously.
- 58:28So when God wants to wipe away our sin, that is his chief and
- 58:32because that will bring us back to him and reconcile us to him.
- 58:37But as a good father he also wants to ensure and do what he
- 58:42needs to do so that we would not repeat the offense and continue
- 58:46to harm us and others. And more importantly Our walk
- 58:49with him. And so the Lord will take extra
- 58:52measures to bring about preventive things in our lives
- 58:58and very real ways. So that it becomes much more
- 59:02difficult to repeat that very offense that got us in the mess
- 59:05to begin with. And the means by which God does
- 59:09this, this might shock you, but it's true.
- 59:12The means by which God does, this is something called
- 59:15discipline. Chastisement.
- 59:20In other words, God permitting and even authoring painful
- 59:25experiences in our lives, in connection to our sin.
- 59:31So that what we thought was sweet is actually sour, And just
- 59:38like when you discipline a child, after they do something
- 59:41wrong, we make the connection with that wrong and realize,
- 59:45this is what it's going to actually produce in my life and
- 59:48it makes it less attractive than what we thought it was before it
- 59:52all happened. And so God as a father knows
- 59:57exactly what to prescribe, he knows the right measure of pain
- 1:00:02to implement in order for us to be repulsed by and if not
- 1:00:08repulse totally, at least fearful of the thing that we did
- 1:00:13to fracture our fellowship with him.
- 1:00:16And in David's case, you know what it was.
- 1:00:20Have to kill your son. How do we feel about that?
- 1:00:28Here's the thing that you and I can be comforted with and
- 1:00:32comforted by the discipline of God is Not subject to potential
- 1:00:37error. Father's even Godly fathers are
- 1:00:41capable of going too far when correcting their son.
- 1:00:46When correcting their daughter and they are equally capable of
- 1:00:50having too low of a standard when it comes to the growth in
- 1:00:54the maturation of their children.
- 1:00:57But the reason why you, and I can look at that and actually be
- 1:01:00comfortable with the decision of the Lord.
- 1:01:02Ultimately, he's God, who can question his ways, but we can be
- 1:01:06comforted to know that he's perfect in all of his ways, not
- 1:01:09just in his love, not just in his grace, not just in his gifts
- 1:01:12also in his discipline, even in his discipline.
- 1:01:15Again, let me say it. He knows the right prescription
- 1:01:19to give to create a procedure in your heart that will uproot.
- 1:01:25Those roots that have Simulated you all these years.
- 1:01:29You remember, David did not do this out of nowhere.
- 1:01:32This was a deep-seated issue. He had no problem taking wives,
- 1:01:35and taking more woman unto himself and it manifested this
- 1:01:39way in adultery and murder. But what was the root cause of
- 1:01:43it? What was?
- 1:01:43I can we learn early passions early on that.
- 1:01:46He did not deal with. And God says, at this point, now
- 1:01:49we're going to deal with it. And the way we're going to deal
- 1:01:52with it is going to be painful but the pain is necessary to
- 1:01:56uproot that which keeps bringing you back to this cycle.
- 1:02:00A new believer. When you ask them how it is that
- 1:02:03you believe that Jesus loves you and they'll say, John, 3:16 for
- 1:02:06God. So loved the world that He Sent
- 1:02:07His only begotten son. Right, mature.
- 1:02:10Christian who walks with the Lord will not necessarily quote.
- 1:02:13John 3:16 they will also, quote places like Revelation 3, where
- 1:02:16we are told whom I love. I discipline Who am I love?
- 1:02:21I discipline. So as a father who loves the
- 1:02:26expression of his love is not merely taking you deeper in the
- 1:02:31depths of the truths of the Gospel, but it's also to
- 1:02:34implement punishment to produce righteousness and Holiness in
- 1:02:39US. And that's exactly what David
- 1:02:42would require. There's an interesting proverb.
- 1:02:46And I love to see a proverb and then see biblical example for
- 1:02:49it. Here's one, it's in Proverbs 20
- 1:02:51verse 30. I'm going to quote the second
- 1:02:53part Strokes make clean the innermost Parts.
- 1:02:58The first part says blows that wound cleanse away, evil
- 1:03:03Strokes, may clean. That innermost Parts in other
- 1:03:06words, often times painful means do the deepest work of cleansing
- 1:03:14and people. And Not only would the
- 1:03:17discipline of the Lord caused The Sinner, to be repulsed by
- 1:03:22their sin will actually discourage observers from that
- 1:03:25very same sin. So that's Proverbs.
- 1:03:28Twenty Thirty listen to this in Proverbs 21, 11, when a scoffer
- 1:03:32is punished, the simple become wise When they scoffers somebody
- 1:03:38over there, who's a scoffer is punished whether by the law or
- 1:03:43by God himself the simple, the unlearned the ones who are
- 1:03:47swayed, left and right. Those people when they observe
- 1:03:50that go home, an that's mishap. That's what happens when you do
- 1:03:57that. No, thank you.
- 1:03:58I don't want it. And so there's a multi-faceted
- 1:04:02purpose with God's discipline and even one person's life.
- 1:04:08And David would be. Accepting of that punishment.
- 1:04:12There is no protest. Here, there's no fist to the
- 1:04:15skies. Just a broken willingness to
- 1:04:19embrace what's about to take place in his life.
- 1:04:24Here's how. And did I say that already?
- 1:04:28We have men's meeting in the morning.
- 1:04:30Should we just stay up until then?
- 1:04:35There's a prophetic picture here.
- 1:04:41Isn't it, isn't it? An awesome thing to see prophecy
- 1:04:44or some Shadow depicted and obscure texts like this, I love
- 1:04:48it. Your son is going to die.
- 1:04:54Is the sun innocent. Yeah, he is in us and in God's
- 1:05:00wisdom. Who's the author?
- 1:05:04of life and the Removal the author to remove life, he can do
- 1:05:12what he pleases and we have the joy of the same chapter to
- 1:05:14realize that this baby is going to be in heaven.
- 1:05:19The death of your son, David is going to pay for your sins.
- 1:05:29And there is coming at this point.
- 1:05:32Another son of David. That would arrive several
- 1:05:37hundred years later. Who would do the same?
- 1:05:41not just for David, but for all of us, there is an innocent boy
- 1:05:46that will come from the seed of David who will in his death
- 1:05:51cover, the sin of all mankind, So even in this dark picture
- 1:05:58this heartbreaking scenario, we see a sliver of gospel truth.
- 1:06:05There is a son of David Who will come and his death will cover
- 1:06:11past present and future sin. Because that is the preciousness
- 1:06:16of his blood. Let's pray.
- 1:06:36Lord, we look to you tonight with all these truths.
- 1:06:40That have been presented before us.
- 1:06:41And we ask that it would cause us to worship you and Lord.
- 1:06:45As we heard to despise your word is to despise you.
- 1:06:48But to love your word is to love you and we want to express our
- 1:06:52love to you. Every Friday night as we come to
- 1:06:56your word. And we pray that as we sing.
- 1:07:02As we sing Lord, we would not sing.
- 1:07:06Divorce from the truth that we heard, but it would stimulate us
- 1:07:09to give you the praise and honor that is due to you.
- 1:07:11Because you are the one who breathed this book into our
- 1:07:14hands. We love you Lord we ask that you
- 1:07:17would indeed sanctifies as you see fit in Jesus name.
- 1:07:21Amen. Let's stand as we close and I'll
- 1:07:25let you go. Some of you look heavy, I'd But
- 1:07:30give it what you have for the Lord Jesus before you head onto
- 1:07:33your bed. And bless them in the night with
- 1:07:35an evening sacrifice.
