- 2:23Speaker 1: All Right, last off season, Simon, you and I ranked
- 2:26Speaker 1: our top ten quarterbacks into twenty twenty two, along with
- 2:32Speaker 1: our friend Colin Cowherd from The Volume. Our friends at
- 2:35Speaker 1: the Volume. Today, we're going to update the lists for
- 2:39Speaker 1: twenty twenty three with another very special guest. Some would
- 2:43Speaker 1: say he's more of an expert on football than Colin Cowherd,
- 2:48Speaker 1: he just doesn't yell about it as much. We're joined
- 2:51Speaker 1: by fantasy guru Rich Riebar, NFL expert at Sharp Football Analysis,
- 2:57Speaker 1: co host of the DFS Pick six show on roto Grinders,
- 3:03Speaker 1: probably one of the more popular shows on rotor Grinders.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I know it is because I've seen the numbers. Rich,
- 3:10Speaker 1: How are you, buddy.

- 4:08Speaker 1: Gambling problem call or text one eight hundred gambler. All right,
- 4:14Speaker 1: Like I said, we're going through our top ten quarterback rankings.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I did a significant amount of research for this. I'm
- 4:23Speaker 1: not even kidding. Who doesn't love ranking quarterbacks. It's the
- 4:26Speaker 1: most fun thing you can do. Whatever criteria we're going
- 4:31Speaker 1: to use, we need to define when we begin our
- 4:35Speaker 1: listing process. So these aren't statistical, These aren't fantasy projections
- 4:39Speaker 1: for the upcoming season. These are a ranking of what
- 4:43Speaker 1: quarterbacks do we, as people who are in the betting space,
- 4:46Speaker 1: trust the most. Who do we distrust the least. You know,
- 4:51Speaker 1: we talked a lot about this last year, and it's like,
- 4:53Speaker 1: to me, it always comes down to who am I
- 4:56Speaker 1: most confident will get me a cover or who do
- 4:58Speaker 1: I want to bet on or against the least? So
- 5:06Speaker 1: here we go, Simon, these were our twenty twenty two rankings. Okay,
- 5:11Speaker 1: these are yours first, and then I want to get
- 5:12Speaker 1: to your list. You add Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers,
- 5:17Speaker 1: Tom Brady, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson,
- 5:23Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray. Tell me your twenty twenty three list,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and remind everybody what is your criteria.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I mean, other than the fact that we're just doing
- 5:36Speaker 2: this because it's the middle of July and it's got
- 5:38Speaker 2: to be a talking point. I try to make it
- 5:40Speaker 2: so that it's weighted against my biggest value towards the line, right.
- 5:44Speaker 3: That's why I did last year.
- 5:45Speaker 2: It was like, okay, who has the most weight towards
- 5:47Speaker 2: their line for their specific team? And then we talked
- 5:50Speaker 2: about it. It's like I want the guy who can
- 5:52Speaker 2: throw a pick like a pick six, and then it
- 5:54Speaker 2: doesn't matter the next round they're out there, they're just
- 5:56Speaker 2: going deep again.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Like I love that whole mentality.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Talking about Joe Burrow, He's that kind of guy I
- 6:02Speaker 2: like where it just doesn't matter like, it doesn't matter
- 6:06Speaker 2: what the last play was, they don't get phased by it.
- 6:07Speaker 2: That to me is something I really do look for.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So you know, last year, looking at that list you
- 6:13Speaker 2: just went through, I think you would agree with me.
- 6:16Speaker 3: We both.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Again, it's impossible because it's one, A, one and B,
- 6:20Speaker 2: but we probably should have Mahomes above Allan.
- 6:23Speaker 3: But coming into.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Last year, the whole thought process was Allan was going
- 6:27Speaker 2: to take another step, and clearly that didn't happen. He
- 6:30Speaker 2: had an injury to his elbow who knows what, and
- 6:32Speaker 2: Mahomes went on to win.
- 6:33Speaker 3: A Super Bowl.
- 6:34Speaker 2: So I would say both me and Chad probably had
- 6:36Speaker 2: a little bit of regret making Allen our number one QB.
- 6:39Speaker 3: It probably should have been Mahomes. But I still think
- 6:41Speaker 3: they're just both right there.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Like even after last season, I still think Alan's going
- 6:45Speaker 2: to bounce back this year, and you know, we all
- 6:47Speaker 2: expect Mahomes to be the best. So how should I
- 6:50Speaker 2: start a chat? Should I start ten down?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Well?
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah, let's start from the bottom up. It is interesting, though, Rich,
- 6:55Speaker 1: I want to get your take on this before Simon
- 6:57Speaker 1: digs into it. Like Alan and Mahomes last year, everybody
- 7:03Speaker 1: was so high on Allan and there was like backlash
- 7:07Speaker 1: to Mahomes and obviously we were all desperately, desperately wrong
- 7:15Speaker 1: about that assessment.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Your take, Yeah, I think Mahomes is kind of in that,
- 7:21Speaker 4: you know, almost that Lebron you know, Jordan kind of it,
- 7:24Speaker 4: like he's so good and so kind of transcendent that
- 7:27Speaker 4: people almost get kind of bored by it and look
- 7:30Speaker 4: for something new. But what he brings the table will
- 7:33Speaker 4: ended up getting into the meat of Mahomes. But what
- 7:36Speaker 4: he's able to do that other quarterbacks can't do is
- 7:39Speaker 4: just by far just puts him. I don't want to
- 7:42Speaker 4: go back and say a year like, hey, you guys
- 7:43Speaker 4: were dummies for not having that, you know, in retrospect,
- 7:46Speaker 4: but I don't think that it still is even close
- 7:48Speaker 4: between him and anyone else in the field. Now.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's more like, you know, Patrick Mahomes is one through
- 7:55Speaker 1: ten and everybody else is ten through ten through thirty two.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I mean, I'm curious to get your guys' take too,
- 8:01Speaker 4: if there was like a firewall for you guys, because
- 8:04Speaker 4: even doing this exercise where you think like a ten
- 8:06Speaker 4: quarterbacks is only a third of the league, even get
- 8:10Speaker 4: in to like eight or nine I'm like, is this
- 8:12Speaker 4: guy really the ninth best quarterback in the NFL?
- 8:14Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I will tell you. That's exactly what happened.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Like I and some and maybe you did the same thing.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I off the top of my head jotted down the
- 8:26Speaker 1: quarterbacks I would consider to be top ten, and I
- 8:30Speaker 1: had to go to the NFL website to remind myself
- 8:34Speaker 1: of who I would want in those sort of eight, nine,
- 8:37Speaker 1: ten spots. It wasn't automatic as it has been I
- 8:41Speaker 1: think in years past. Simon go from the bottom up.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we do.
- 8:46Speaker 2: All we was talking about, there's like these four or
- 8:48Speaker 2: five guys were all interchangeable, like Dak Prescott, Kirk Cousins.
- 8:51Speaker 2: They literally have the Spider Man me Like, there is
- 8:54Speaker 2: truly no difference. It's all about your opinion and how
- 8:57Speaker 2: you feel about each guy. So you know, starting number ten,
- 9:01Speaker 2: I still went with Stafford. I couldn't take him out
- 9:04Speaker 2: of my top ten. I know you missed all last season.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I just can't go over how smart he is and
- 9:10Speaker 2: how with Nickveigh it's just a great combo. Like again, Chad,
- 9:14Speaker 2: you know this, I'm going to be beating their drum all.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean, I even know it's gonna be all season,
- 9:19Speaker 2: but all precent. I'm gonna be all over this Rams
- 9:20Speaker 2: team again. They're ten to one right now at two
- 9:23Speaker 2: major books. Bet three sixty five are are sponsors. They've
- 9:26Speaker 2: dropped their number down to I think seven to one
- 9:28Speaker 2: to win their division. So again I'm all over the Rams.
- 9:32Speaker 2: They're just undervalued. I still have Stafford at number ten.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Couldn't drop in my top ten. So and when Stafford
- 9:38Speaker 2: ten Watson.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Even didn't even occur to me to put Stafford in
- 9:42Speaker 1: my top ten.
- 9:44Speaker 2: That's what I mean. They're just he's left for debt.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Like you miss the season, you're kind of left for debt.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So that's just how it is.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Stafford ten Watson nine. This one was actually pretty tough,
- 9:55Speaker 2: just because I don't like again Chris Raybond talked about
- 9:59Speaker 2: we don't know, oh if Rogers fell off the hill.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I don't think he did. I think a lot of
- 10:03Speaker 2: a lot last year could be put onto the batter
- 10:05Speaker 2: receivers of that Green Bay team, right. I think I
- 10:08Speaker 2: saw some staty and one of the worst deep balls
- 10:10Speaker 2: in all football last season Rogers. I just can't see
- 10:12Speaker 2: it being the same deal with this Jets team. So
- 10:15Speaker 2: I had I had Rogers at number eight, had Trevor
- 10:18Speaker 2: Lawrence making my top ten, had him at number seven,
- 10:22Speaker 2: had Lamar Jackson at number six, had Hurts at number five.
- 10:28Speaker 3: That's where things got.
- 10:29Speaker 2: A little tricky for me because I love Hurts, but
- 10:32Speaker 2: I'm still I just can't get over Herbert's tape. Man Like,
- 10:35Speaker 2: anytime I watch Herbert's tape, it's just I love the
- 10:39Speaker 2: kids so much. So I had Herbert over Hurts, had
- 10:42Speaker 2: him in number four, had Joe Burrow at number three,
- 10:45Speaker 2: had Josh Allen number two, and had my Homes at
- 10:47Speaker 2: number one. So it kind of felt like a list
- 10:50Speaker 2: where I wanted to get Hurts higher. I just couldn't
- 10:54Speaker 2: put him over Herbert. Herbert's talent as a thrower is
- 10:57Speaker 2: just again out of this world. So all the respect
- 11:01Speaker 2: in the world obviously for Hurts.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I'm an Eagles fan, but.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I still think Herbert is still in my power rankings,
- 11:07Speaker 2: just a head of them.
- 11:08Speaker 1: See, this is what's so interesting is and it's why
- 11:12Speaker 1: the criteria is so interesting because obviously Herbert is so talented.
- 11:20Speaker 1: But at the end of the game, am I going
- 11:24Speaker 1: to feel more comfortable having bet on a guy like
- 11:28Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence or bet on a guy like Justin Herbert,
- 11:32Speaker 1: because to me, that's what I'm thinking about. And Rich,
- 11:36Speaker 1: I know, I think you and Simon are closer in
- 11:39Speaker 1: how you're thinking about the quarterback rankings when it comes
- 11:44Speaker 1: to Herbert, So you know you can reveal yours in
- 11:51Speaker 1: a second. But that that you hit the crux of
- 11:56Speaker 1: the issue there, Simon, and that Rich also so alluded to,
- 12:01Speaker 1: like outside of that first five, six, seven, it's really hard,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and even at that four or five spot, it's really hard.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I think we're all going to end up with a
- 12:11Speaker 1: combination of Herbert Lawrence Hurts in that same region.
- 12:18Speaker 4: No, it is fun to see how these things change
- 12:20Speaker 4: a year over a year. But my criteria that I
- 12:23Speaker 4: used was basically, you're giving me my choice to rank
- 12:27Speaker 4: the quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl in isolation in
- 12:31Speaker 4: just twenty twenty three football. I'm starting a team so
- 12:34Speaker 4: independent kind of of their situations and stuff, which we'll
- 12:36Speaker 4: get into as we talk about the quarterbacks. But that's
- 12:39Speaker 4: how I use the criteria. I can pick a guy
- 12:41Speaker 4: just to win in twenty twenty three, I'm gonna build
- 12:43Speaker 4: my team around that. Where would I start? So I'll
- 12:48Speaker 4: go ten through one two and same thing. I got
- 12:50Speaker 4: to the bottom and I thought I was gonna be the
- 12:52Speaker 4: only one that had Deshaun Watson. But I have Dak
- 12:54Speaker 4: Prescott ten, Deshaun Watson nine. I think with Watson, this
- 13:00Speaker 4: one that could look really really dumb in hindsight, But
- 13:03Speaker 4: you have to really kind of go back to Dante
- 13:05Speaker 4: Calpepper to have a quarterback that started his career as
- 13:07Speaker 4: good as Deshaun Watson and then just was never good again.
- 13:11Speaker 4: And even Callpeper was a little older, had a severe
- 13:13Speaker 4: knee injury, lost Randy Moss. But I mean, Deshaun Watson
- 13:17Speaker 4: was so good his first five years in the league.
- 13:19Speaker 4: He's only gonna be twenty eight in September. Like, I'm
- 13:21Speaker 4: still just gonna have a little bit of blind faith
- 13:23Speaker 4: and if he blows up in her face, then will
- 13:24Speaker 4: turn the tides and he's off everyone's list next year.
- 13:28Speaker 4: I did have Aaron Rodgers eight. I kind of agree.
- 13:32Speaker 4: It feels so much like the Tom Brady situation right
- 13:34Speaker 4: where Rogers just looked checked out at times last year
- 13:37Speaker 4: he was kind of almost like out, had a foot
- 13:39Speaker 4: out of the door at the organization needed a fresh
- 13:42Speaker 4: needs a fresh start. The Packers are third in the
- 13:44Speaker 4: NFL and drop passes last year. Just I still have him.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I still think it's it reminds you too much of
- 13:50Speaker 4: the Brady situation. Then I have Lawrence. Lawrence was the
- 13:53Speaker 4: toughest guy for me because I felt like I'm low,
- 13:55Speaker 4: but I am still high on him. I just value
- 13:57Speaker 4: the QB mobility like guy. So I've Lamar Jackson next,
- 14:01Speaker 4: then Jalen Hurts, who I would love to have hired too.
- 14:03Speaker 4: But then I have Herbert Burrow, Josh Allen, and Mahomes.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Wow, you and Simon same as Mahomes, sam On Allen,
- 14:13Speaker 1: sam On Burrow, sam On Herbert Samon Hurts, sam On Lamar,
- 14:18Speaker 1: sam On Lawrence, You are the exact same top ten,
- 14:21Speaker 1: except for you have Prescott and you, and Simon has Stafford.
- 14:28Speaker 2: That's he's a better That's what I'm saying. Most betters
- 14:31Speaker 2: have a power rated that way.
- 14:34Speaker 4: I think Lamar is probably the toughest guy. I think
- 14:36Speaker 4: if you're talking about just even using my criteria because
- 14:39Speaker 4: of the you know, even if you want to count
- 14:42Speaker 4: Hurts just because I mean, we haven't seen those guys.
- 14:45Speaker 4: If my amusing my career of winning a Super Bowl,
- 14:47Speaker 4: if I'm trailing by ten points in the fourth quarter,
- 14:49Speaker 4: Do I have faith any of those guys bring me
- 14:51Speaker 4: back as a passer? And I think that's still kind
- 14:53Speaker 4: of the question that that is surrounding and orbiting those
- 14:56Speaker 4: two guys, but playing with the lead, those guys are amazing.
- 14:59Speaker 4: I mean, jalen it Hurts had twenty two dropbacks trailing
- 15:02Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter all of last season. Like we know,
- 15:04Speaker 4: as great as the year was, like we still didn't
- 15:06Speaker 4: see a scenario where like he had to really come back.
- 15:09Speaker 4: The Colts game was kind of really it during the
- 15:11Speaker 4: regular season. But that's kind of like the two like
- 15:13Speaker 4: the two question markers, right, like I fro'm down ten
- 15:15Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl or either
- 15:18Speaker 4: of those guys gonna go to row me back with
- 15:20Speaker 4: quick passing drives.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Simon, I take offense to the fact that you said
- 15:24Speaker 1: he's a better That's how all betters are looking at this.
- 15:28Speaker 3: You should take offense to it. Chad. I literally this
- 15:31Speaker 3: is a true story.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Rich last season, I bashed Russell Wilson for four months
- 15:35Speaker 2: and Chad came in here on September first and made
- 15:38Speaker 2: them his number one seed Denver. And I literally told
- 15:41Speaker 2: the guy for four or five months stay away from
- 15:43Speaker 2: Denver and Chad came in on our first our first
- 15:46Speaker 2: pod before the season started that I like Denvers the one.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Seed, so I love their own shade.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Chad, I listened before I get to my list. Let
- 15:55Speaker 1: me remind you, guys, you've heard me talk about game

- 16:56Speaker 1: my twenty twenty two rankings. At the bottom. I had
- 17:03Speaker 1: Kyler Murray, you know, didn't go well. I had Matthew
- 17:08Speaker 1: Stafford didn't go well. I had Aaron Rodgers didn't go well.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I had Justin Herbert, probably a little bit too low.
- 17:19Speaker 4: I had.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Joe Burrow. I had him at six, probably a little
- 17:25Speaker 1: bit too low. I think I had Russell Wilson, he
- 17:28Speaker 1: was at five. And yes, while I was reading this
- 17:31Speaker 1: list and it said Wilson for a second, I forgot
- 17:34Speaker 1: which Wilson it was, and I'm like, did I really
- 17:36Speaker 1: have Zach Wilson at number five? Then I remember last
- 17:40Speaker 1: second it was Russell Wilson, Tom Brady at four, Deshaun Watson.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I went big. I went out on Seaun Watson at
- 17:48Speaker 1: number three, Patrick Mahomes at two, and Josh Allen it one.
- 17:52Speaker 1: So that is a terrible, terrible list. We can look
- 17:57Speaker 1: back on that, you know, we could do. We can laugh,
- 17:58Speaker 1: because if we can't laugh at ourselves when we're ranking quarterbacks,
- 18:02Speaker 1: what can we do?
- 18:04Speaker 3: You like to swing for the fences chat. That's why
- 18:05Speaker 3: I love you.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I do I go bit. You know, here's my theory
- 18:11Speaker 1: back when you know, I was running ESPN, the magazine,
- 18:13Speaker 1: you'd have to do these stupid like super Bowl predictions
- 18:17Speaker 1: in your preview issues, and every single magazine tried to
- 18:23Speaker 1: get it right. They would like, try to choose one
- 18:26Speaker 1: of the two best teams. And I would always say
- 18:29Speaker 1: to our guys, let's just choose randoms, like worst case scenario,
- 18:35Speaker 1: they don't win, and nobody gives a fuck about what
- 18:38Speaker 1: you were saying in September. Best case scenario one of them.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Mix it to the Super Bowl and you look like
- 18:44Speaker 1: a genius and you can talk about it for the
- 18:46Speaker 1: next nine months until the season begins again. Middle ground
- 18:50Speaker 1: is you picked like the same teams everybody else did,
- 18:54Speaker 1: So who gives a fuck? Like, let's swing for the fences,
- 18:57Speaker 1: let's go for variants. Let's not play middle of the street.
- 19:01Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Only thing in the middle
- 19:04Speaker 1: of the street dead armadillos, uh Chad. To my friends
- 19:09Speaker 1: from Texas, say, all right, so here is my top
- 19:14Speaker 1: ten going from number ten number ten? Well, I think,
- 19:20Speaker 1: because I'm looking at Simon's face right now, number ten.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And remember, let me remind everybody my criteria for this
- 19:27Speaker 1: going into this season. Who are the quarterbacks that I
- 19:31Speaker 1: think will give me the best chance to cover. Either
- 19:36Speaker 1: they're winning by a large amount and covering is a favorite,
- 19:40Speaker 1: or when they have the ball, they are so there's
- 19:45Speaker 1: so much variance in their game, I've got a very
- 19:47Speaker 1: good shot of them covering a spread. Number ten, justin Fields,
- 19:55Speaker 1: this is not a Homer pick, Simon. This is thinking
- 19:58Speaker 1: about No, it's not. It's thinking about the game. It's
- 20:01Speaker 1: thinking about his weapons. It's thinking about how they used
- 20:05Speaker 1: him in the latter half of the year and what
- 20:07Speaker 1: the opportunities are going forward in a much weaker division. Okay,
- 20:13Speaker 1: justin Fields, mark my words, Matt Mitchell.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Clip this.
- 20:17Speaker 1: By this time next year, we will look back on
- 20:21Speaker 1: this pick and think, wow, Milan was right. Number nine.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Surprise you guys didn't have this. Tua on a team
- 20:29Speaker 1: with a great coach, great offensive scheme that we think
- 20:33Speaker 1: is going to be better this year. Tua gives me
- 20:36Speaker 1: a great chance to cover. I don't want him to
- 20:38Speaker 1: have the ball at the end of the game if
- 20:40Speaker 1: I've bet against him. Eight Lamar. Notice I do not
- 20:44Speaker 1: have Aaron Rodgers in my top ten. Lamar seven, Dak six,
- 20:51Speaker 1: Jalen Hurtz five Justin Herbert four Trevor Lawrence. And here's
- 20:56Speaker 1: why I went. You know, Laurence I went. Bert Lawrences
- 21:00Speaker 1: said of vice versa, I have more faith in Doug
- 21:03Speaker 1: Peterson and his ability to put his team in a
- 21:05Speaker 1: position to cover than I do Brandon Staley and the
- 21:10Speaker 1: Chargers three. Josh Allen to Joe Burrow one, Patrick Mahomes
- 21:17Speaker 1: again to your point, Simon pick six, I don't give
- 21:21Speaker 1: a shit. I'm coming back on the field. I like
- 21:23Speaker 1: Joe Burrow to give me a chance to cover more
- 21:25Speaker 1: than Josh Allen rich. I'm gonna let Simon continue to
- 21:30Speaker 1: build animosity for my list. Please give me your take.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I came in here prepared.
- 21:37Speaker 3: You know, you never know.
- 21:38Speaker 4: I came in prepared to sword and shield Justin Herbert
- 21:41Speaker 4: because you know, it feels like the general public thinks
- 21:45Speaker 4: he's overrated now. But I mean, this is the guy
- 21:48Speaker 4: that through thirty passing touchdowns this first two years in
- 21:51Speaker 4: the NFL, the only quarterback to ever do that in
- 21:52Speaker 4: league history. And everything that could go wrong for Justin
- 21:55Speaker 4: Herbert did. How many quarterbacks could we swap in Justin
- 21:59Speaker 4: Herbert environment with the same injuries Justin Herbert had last
- 22:02Speaker 4: year and still play as well as Justin Herbert did
- 22:05Speaker 4: last year. And I know how the season ended, but
- 22:07Speaker 4: this is a guy that had a chess fracture in September.
- 22:10Speaker 4: He had a torn labram. Rashaun Slater, Corey Linsley, Keenan
- 22:13Speaker 4: Allen and Mike Williams played twenty snaps together twenty the
- 22:17Speaker 4: entire season. When he had Keenan Allen and Mike Williams
- 22:21Speaker 4: on the field. It was only one hundred and seventy
- 22:23Speaker 4: five dropbacks, but he would have been third in the
- 22:26Speaker 4: NFL amongst all qbs and EPA per play second and
- 22:29Speaker 4: success right, he would have led the NFL completion rate,
- 22:31Speaker 4: he would have led been second behind Patch Mahoms and
- 22:33Speaker 4: quarterback rating. This was a guy that basically the top
- 22:37Speaker 4: three Chargers receivers were a running back in Austin Eckler,
- 22:40Speaker 4: Josh Palmer and DeAndre Carter. Those are the top three
- 22:42Speaker 4: players that were on the field. What quarterbacks could we
- 22:44Speaker 4: swap in for the Chargers last year and would have
- 22:48Speaker 4: they would have been as good? The team would have
- 22:50Speaker 4: been as good.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I don't.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I think it's a very short list.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't argue with that, But here's the problem.
- 23:00Speaker 1: At the end of the day, he's beholden to the
- 23:02Speaker 1: plays that are called fundamentally, and while they haven't new listen,
- 23:08Speaker 1: let me get there, let me get there. I know
- 23:11Speaker 1: they have a new offensive coordinator. I have no faith
- 23:16Speaker 1: in brand Staley as a head coach to put them
- 23:18Speaker 1: in a position to succeed. I just don't. And so
- 23:21Speaker 1: until I can see that, I am going to put
- 23:24Speaker 1: Justin Herbert, because remember, I'm not thinking just quarterbacks. The
- 23:27Speaker 1: criteria is think about the quarterbacks that I'm going to
- 23:30Speaker 1: be most comfortable betting in. Quarterbacks are oftentimes victims of
- 23:35Speaker 1: their environment, or they are products in a successful way
- 23:38Speaker 1: of their environment. Justin Herbert so far has been a
- 23:41Speaker 1: victim of his environment in terms of covering the pointspread Simon.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Before we even start, I just want to say to Simon,
- 23:51Speaker 1: I don't like you.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Look well.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Look, I feel like you were gonna You're gonna give
- 23:58Speaker 1: me comments that basically say, oh, Chad, it's gonna make
- 24:03Speaker 1: me feel bad about myself.
- 24:05Speaker 2: No, I'm learning a lot. You're You're quick to move on, Chad.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I can't believe you had Watson as your number three
- 24:09Speaker 2: guy last year.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Now he's off your list. That was that was pretty wild.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I kind of get where you're coming to you and Mitchell,
- 24:20Speaker 2: I get where you're coming with justin Fields again that
- 24:22Speaker 2: that it's definitely a home or pick, but it's also
- 24:24Speaker 2: you're projecting out where it's like, yeah, if if Fields
- 24:27Speaker 2: take that next step like Hurts did, I could easily
- 24:29Speaker 2: see him being number five or six. Like the kid
- 24:32Speaker 2: is probably the most gifted athlete in the league until
- 24:35Speaker 2: maybe Anthony Richardson steps on the field.
- 24:36Speaker 3: So it's not that shock and you're so high in Fields.
- 24:40Speaker 2: My my issue with Dak Prescott is he's had seven
- 24:44Speaker 2: full seasons in the league. Every year he either has
- 24:46Speaker 2: above average defense or above average offense. He has played
- 24:50Speaker 2: in zero conference final games. You can't just keep blaming
- 24:53Speaker 2: the coaches the players that somebody has to fall in Dak.
- 24:57Speaker 2: So I think it's it's the part of the Cowboys bias, right.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Like You'll hear people again, it will never make sense.
- 25:03Speaker 2: They'll be like, do you think Tony Romo is a
- 25:05Speaker 2: Hall of Famer? It's like, what, No, do you think
- 25:08Speaker 2: Dak Prescott's a top five quarterback?
- 25:11Speaker 3: No?
- 25:11Speaker 2: I don't, and I'd have in my top ten just
- 25:13Speaker 2: because he's disappointing me with what he's had around him
- 25:16Speaker 2: and what he's done over the last couple of years.
- 25:19Speaker 2: And the two to one again, I get where you're
- 25:22Speaker 2: coming from, Mahue. With two is it seems like there's
- 25:26Speaker 2: a couple of defenses that could just scheme him out.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Like the Jets really took him off his game when
- 25:30Speaker 2: they played against them last year. The forty nine Ers,
- 25:32Speaker 2: I remember, I know for a fact you remember that
- 25:34Speaker 2: game chat the forty nine ers where I believe it
- 25:36Speaker 2: was three and a half four point favorites. Everyone in
- 25:39Speaker 2: their grandma was pound in Miami, right, All the money
- 25:42Speaker 2: was pouring in Miami because brock Perty was a starter
- 25:44Speaker 2: for the forty nine ers. They blew them the hell out.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I think I think the Miami maybe put up fourteen points,
- 25:49Speaker 2: like maybe they had two touchdowns in the first quarter
- 25:52Speaker 2: and that was it the rest of the game.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Like it's just I like where you're coming from, Tua.
- 25:55Speaker 2: But my issue with two is that it's that talent
- 25:58Speaker 2: around him, Like he's got Wattle tyree kill.
- 26:00Speaker 3: We just talked about Herbert.
- 26:02Speaker 2: You put Herbert on that Miami team. I cannot see
- 26:06Speaker 2: them having the same issues they had last year that
- 26:08Speaker 2: Chargers team, So you know Tua, Dak, Justin Fields, those
- 26:13Speaker 2: three guys you have in there. Once again we're talking
- 26:16Speaker 2: about it's just a fine line between rotating these guys
- 26:18Speaker 2: in and out. I just still think Stafford should be
- 26:21Speaker 2: over those guys. Just because Stafford's done it, he's fully healthy.
- 26:25Speaker 2: I have to give some respect to these veteran guys
- 26:27Speaker 2: who have done it before. The same thing goes with
- 26:28Speaker 2: the Rogers. It's like, I get the hate for Rogers.
- 26:32Speaker 2: I totally understand where you're coming from, Chad having them
- 26:34Speaker 2: outside you're top ten. I just I can't say he's
- 26:37Speaker 2: falling off a cliff yet because he still had moments
- 26:39Speaker 2: last year where it wasn't totally his fault, and you
- 26:42Speaker 2: said it by midseason he was cooked, right, he kind
- 26:44Speaker 2: of gave up on that team. I just can't see
- 26:47Speaker 2: me the same weather Jets. So don't don't hate your list.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I would say my only big question mark shocker was
- 26:53Speaker 2: Toua just because again I like too. I think he's
- 26:57Speaker 2: really talented, but in his draft class, I can't put
- 27:01Speaker 2: him on the same top ten as a guy like Hertz,
- 27:04Speaker 2: who's you know, went to.
- 27:05Speaker 3: A super Bowl in Herbert, who is arguably.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Like the damn Marino prototype, Like they're the same type
- 27:10Speaker 2: of throwing style, the same type of build.
- 27:13Speaker 3: I just don't have the same respect yet for Tua.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Yeah, the Dolphins I think are one of the most
- 27:18Speaker 4: fascinating teams coming into the season. To Mike McDaniels, the
- 27:22Speaker 4: calibration right there. The Dolphins went on like this month
- 27:26Speaker 4: long heater last year right before they played the forty
- 27:29Speaker 4: nine Ers where they scored like thirty points. They looked
- 27:31Speaker 4: like a juggernaut. But they did against the Lions, the Bears,
- 27:34Speaker 4: the Browns, and the Texans. Then they had to punch
- 27:36Speaker 4: up their first tech kind of test against the forty
- 27:38Speaker 4: nine ers, and the forty nine ers have a defensive
- 27:41Speaker 4: scheme that's just a nightmare for that anyways. Because of
- 27:43Speaker 4: their linebackers, they can play that cover three robber take
- 27:45Speaker 4: away in the middle of the fields, the guy like
- 27:47Speaker 4: Fred Warner. They've did that. They've given Stafford a bunch
- 27:49Speaker 4: of problems too. In McVeagh that same system, and then
- 27:53Speaker 4: Brandon Saley kind of figured him out. The next week
- 27:55Speaker 4: on Sunday Night Football, when kind of people were having
- 27:57Speaker 4: the argument is it tour or Herbert and.
- 27:59Speaker 3: We found out, Yeah, remember that, we find.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Out real quick with the answer to that and then
- 28:03Speaker 4: to a unfortunately, you know, got hurt the game after
- 28:05Speaker 4: that against the Packers, and like we kind of never
- 28:08Speaker 4: really got to see if, like there was a counter punch,
- 28:10Speaker 4: Like what's the Mike McDaniel counter punch this year? I
- 28:13Speaker 4: really want to see because down that back third of
- 28:15Speaker 4: the season, defense is kind of start to take away
- 28:17Speaker 4: the middle of the field, kind of mug those you know,
- 28:20Speaker 4: play a little physical with the wide receivers in the outside.
- 28:22Speaker 4: So I'm really curious to see how the Dolphins kind
- 28:24Speaker 4: of counter punch, you know, pull pull that jewel out,
- 28:26Speaker 4: take it, take a little beat and see what they
- 28:29Speaker 4: kind of come back and cook in the lab this offseason.
- 28:31Speaker 4: But the Dolphins are fast. They loaded up on defense,
- 28:34Speaker 4: So I'm really curious see how the Dolphins.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Look this year.
- 28:37Speaker 1: You Know what's interesting to me is the Milman list,
- 28:42Speaker 1: What's call it the Milman List versus the what Simon
- 28:45Speaker 1: calls the Betters List, And I put that in quotes
- 28:50Speaker 1: for those who can't see it on the YouTube. The
- 28:53Speaker 1: Millman list is much more about projections and the Better's
- 28:58Speaker 1: list is much more about past performance. And to me,
- 29:03Speaker 1: that's interesting because betters normally are thinking about projections. They're
- 29:09Speaker 1: not thinking about, Okay, what is the recency bias that
- 29:12Speaker 1: will influence my list? So I don't know, I kind
- 29:17Speaker 1: of feel like Milman's probably right here.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I would say, you're it feels like you're a year early.
- 29:23Speaker 2: It feels like you're your wishful thinking on your list,
- 29:25Speaker 2: where I'm just again not that I think Stafford is
- 29:29Speaker 2: going to take a huge leap this year, but I
- 29:30Speaker 2: still think he's just a guy that's always going to
- 29:33Speaker 2: be disrespected. He was disrespected on the lines. I was
- 29:36Speaker 2: one of the haters, right. I used to be like,
- 29:37Speaker 2: this guy has never won a playoff game. Now he's
- 29:39Speaker 2: just going to the Rams and he's gonna win a
- 29:40Speaker 2: Super Bowl. He fucking did, so I got to give
- 29:42Speaker 2: the guy his respect. He's just one of the smarter
- 29:45Speaker 2: players in all football. So I love your upside list.
- 29:49Speaker 2: I'm just going with the old guard for now on
- 29:51Speaker 2: my list.
- 29:53Speaker 4: Rich factor betting in So it just kind of felt
- 29:56Speaker 4: that way. I know this is a podcast, but you
- 30:01Speaker 4: know I thought about it from like, if I can
- 30:03Speaker 4: start a team with one of these quarterbacks, just to
- 30:06Speaker 4: go all the way, like, structurally I can build around
- 30:10Speaker 4: these players. To me, it is hard for the Borough,
- 30:13Speaker 4: even Herbert Man, because I think if you swap them
- 30:15Speaker 4: to like Man, Herbert could be just as good on
- 30:18Speaker 4: the Bengals, right, Like, and really the Burrow has the
- 30:22Speaker 4: one bugaboo that like is really hard for me to
- 30:25Speaker 4: kind of get over. Is that the lack of sack avoidance. Right,
- 30:30Speaker 4: This is why Mahomes is such a demon. Right So,
- 30:32Speaker 4: on pressures, Mahomes has only been sacked on eleven percent
- 30:35Speaker 4: of his career pressures since heandered the league. The NFL
- 30:38Speaker 4: averages twenty percent. Justin field is thirty three percent, by
- 30:41Speaker 4: the way, because pressures are an offensive line stet, but
- 30:44Speaker 4: sacks are quarterbacks that and sacks are essentially a turnover
- 30:48Speaker 4: if it's the next worst thing you know over the
- 30:51Speaker 4: past five years, If you take a sack on a drive,
- 30:54Speaker 4: you score a touchdown at a third of the less
- 30:57Speaker 4: rate on drives when you don't, and then you or
- 31:01Speaker 4: even score points even kicking a field goal on half
- 31:04Speaker 4: you have half the success rate of even kicking a
- 31:06Speaker 4: field goal on that drive. So, I mean, that's what
- 31:08Speaker 4: makes Mahomes such a demon. Right, and Burrow the one
- 31:11Speaker 4: kind of flaw on his game is he takes a
- 31:12Speaker 4: ton of sacks. He eats a lot of sacks. But
- 31:15Speaker 4: to me, they always like, you know, I said joking
- 31:16Speaker 4: before show he came in there. I'm an eighties baby,
- 31:19Speaker 4: and Herbert and Burrow remind me so much of Montana
- 31:22Speaker 4: Lway growing up. Burrow is just that guy doesn't have
- 31:25Speaker 4: all the physical tools, but he's just athletic enough. He's
- 31:27Speaker 4: such a great feel for the game. He's got that
- 31:30Speaker 4: Montana and Herbert is that Lway like he's he's more athletic,
- 31:34Speaker 4: he's got a stronger arm. But we'll make a mistake
- 31:36Speaker 4: or two. But that's how I go back to you.
- 31:38Speaker 4: They're like the modern Montana Lway.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Wait, say that's stat again for the sacks, So explain it,
- 31:45Speaker 1: because that's amazing and I didn't know that.
- 31:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll give you the exact data. So over the
- 31:50Speaker 4: past five years, if you take a sack on a
- 31:52Speaker 4: drive you have owned, NFL teams have only scored on
- 31:55Speaker 4: twenty two point six percent of their drives when you
- 31:58Speaker 4: take any a sack on any down. If you don't
- 32:00Speaker 4: take a sack on a drive, you're scoring rate goes
- 32:02Speaker 4: to forty point eight percent, So you go almost cut
- 32:05Speaker 4: you cut in half to score a touchdown on per drive.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Teams that have taken a sack phone and score a
- 32:10Speaker 4: touchdown eight percent of drives eight percent over the past
- 32:12Speaker 4: five years. If you don't take a sack, you've scored
- 32:15Speaker 4: a touchdown twenty six percent of drives. Almost triple you
- 32:18Speaker 4: triple drives. You punt on fifty two percent of all
- 32:21Speaker 4: drives the sack, you punt on thirty three percent of
- 32:24Speaker 4: all drives without a sack. That's kind of the That's
- 32:27Speaker 4: what makes Mahomes such a demon, the sack avoidant stuff.
- 32:30Speaker 4: And that's probably my biggest question of Fields, you know,
- 32:33Speaker 4: moving forward is just you know, how many negative plays
- 32:35Speaker 4: If you look at the Bears last year when the
- 32:38Speaker 4: Bears didn't when Justin Fields wasn't sacked on a drive,
- 32:41Speaker 4: they were twelfth in the NFL in scoring rate per drives.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Extremely impressive, right, Like you don't think about it with
- 32:46Speaker 4: the with the offense, the lack of offensive weaponry they had,
- 32:49Speaker 4: but they were thirty first in the NFL and drives.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Justin Fields did take a sack, so like that's the
- 32:53Speaker 4: part of his game. He needs to clean up, you know,
- 32:55Speaker 4: adding Darnell right, adding Nate Davis like it's going to
- 32:58Speaker 4: improve the offensive line, but not converting pressures into incompletions
- 33:03Speaker 4: or throwaways or positive plays or something. He just has
- 33:06Speaker 4: to make.
- 33:06Speaker 3: That next jump in.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Wow, that is an amazing set. I love that.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Yeah, Burrow's at twenty seven percent for his career. Like
- 33:14Speaker 4: I said, nfl averages twenty percent. That's kind of the
- 33:17Speaker 4: one flaw in his game. But man, Burrow's so fucking cool.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Well that to me, Like, of our top three, I
- 33:25Speaker 1: go Alan Burrow, Mahomes, You guys both go Burrow, Alan Mahomes.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Why do you have Burrow underneath Allen Simon.
- 33:37Speaker 2: A bunch of reasons, I bet I guess the main
- 33:39Speaker 2: one is still the Allen running threat. We've just we've
- 33:43Speaker 2: never seen anything like this for this guy can take
- 33:44Speaker 2: on a linebacker like there's no other quarterback. I guess
- 33:47Speaker 2: Cam Newton was the other guy. But it's just Josh.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Allen doesn't want to be the guy like you already
- 33:51Speaker 2: talked about. He's not gonna he's gonna try to run
- 33:53Speaker 2: less this upcoming season. But that is just the ultimate
- 33:56Speaker 2: weapon we've just seen timetime. Again, that team the Bills,
- 33:59Speaker 2: and they need plays and Josh steps up. But again,
- 34:02Speaker 2: I love Joe Burrow, but I feel like there's a
- 34:05Speaker 2: couple of little things missing in Joe's game, and the
- 34:07Speaker 2: biggest one is holding on to the ball too long,
- 34:09Speaker 2: where when Josh allenhlds onto too long, he's usually breaking
- 34:12Speaker 2: it for ten yards. So again, I was actually close
- 34:15Speaker 2: to flipping Herbert and Burrow, like they were really close
- 34:18Speaker 2: to one another in the sense that Herbert. I'd have
- 34:22Speaker 2: to go back through my notebook from last year, but
- 34:24Speaker 2: I going into week seventeen, no quarterback was in more
- 34:28Speaker 2: third and sevens or longer and converted more than Herbert.
- 34:32Speaker 2: So again, they had terrible coaching. They would literally first down,
- 34:35Speaker 2: run into the middle of the center. Second down, he
- 34:39Speaker 2: would take some deep shot, it would be incomplete, and
- 34:41Speaker 2: it was always thirty to eight, thirty and seven for Herbert.
- 34:44Speaker 2: If they can get a functioning offense like Eagles, ranging
- 34:46Speaker 2: Eagles are always in third and three, third and four,
- 34:48Speaker 2: tons of options. You have a guy like Hertz, you
- 34:51Speaker 2: have to count the same kind of feeling with Herbert.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Like Herbert can run, he's in a good athlete. There's
- 34:56Speaker 2: plenty of stuff you can do with him on short
- 34:57Speaker 2: doamage where he was in a lot of bats actually
- 35:00Speaker 2: where Burrow, again they had a rough start to the season.
- 35:04Speaker 2: We talk all the time. Check this guy has incredible weapons, right,
- 35:06Speaker 2: he probably has a three You are the three best
- 35:08Speaker 2: receiving corps in football last season, and we expect them.
- 35:12Speaker 3: To be just as good this year.
- 35:13Speaker 2: So with Burrow, I'm again I'm not trying to be
- 35:19Speaker 2: down on him.
- 35:20Speaker 3: We already talked statistically they they.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Them for them to win their division this year, to
- 35:24Speaker 2: win the NF the AFC North three years in a row,
- 35:27Speaker 2: you probably got probably could have got one thousand and
- 35:29Speaker 2: one odds on that three years ago. Ben the Bengals
- 35:31Speaker 2: to win their division three years in a row. So
- 35:34Speaker 2: it feels like a lot of stuff's gonna catch up
- 35:35Speaker 2: to Joe Burrow and that since the team this year,
- 35:37Speaker 2: where you know, Josh Allen, I just think he's still
- 35:42Speaker 2: above it. Like even though he hasn't been to the
- 35:43Speaker 2: Super Bowl like Joe Burrow has, I still think Josh
- 35:46Speaker 2: Allen is right now the one A one B to
- 35:50Speaker 2: Mahomes like Mahomes is still he's the best. Like I'm
- 35:53Speaker 2: not going to try to even talk around the athleticism
- 35:56Speaker 2: of Josh Allen being better than Mahomes, just because we
- 35:59Speaker 2: saw last year, like we talked in the preseason, the
- 36:02Speaker 2: Mahomes going back to the two tight ends set was
- 36:05Speaker 2: going to be good for Mahomes and that offense of
- 36:07Speaker 2: the Chiefs.
- 36:08Speaker 3: Do we know that's all we really needed? Right?
- 36:10Speaker 2: That was how you stopped having the two deep cover
- 36:12Speaker 2: safeties and that really changed everything about Chiefs team.
- 36:15Speaker 3: It's just little things like that chat. So as much
- 36:18Speaker 3: as I think Joe Burrow.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Is right there with Josh Allen, I think it's more
- 36:22Speaker 2: closer Joe Burrow and Herbert than is Josh Awen and Mahomes.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Wow, wow, I did not you guys. You guys are
- 36:29Speaker 1: so high in Herbert. Are you rich? Final thoughts on
- 36:35Speaker 1: closer to Burrow and Herbert than Burrow and Allen?
- 36:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I think just the it's the combination of ceiling
- 36:42Speaker 4: for Alan is what separates him and makes them kind
- 36:44Speaker 4: of like a like the like a mini tier at two. Right,
- 36:48Speaker 4: Just the combination of being able to have that guy
- 36:51Speaker 4: that can break out of a three hundred and seventy
- 36:53Speaker 4: five pound defensive lineman wrapped around you Chris Jones spinning
- 36:58Speaker 4: out and making a play right, Like you go back
- 36:59Speaker 4: to two years ago in that AFC Championship game, or
- 37:02Speaker 4: was he it was the divisional round game. I'm sorry,
- 37:04Speaker 4: the Chiefs Bills game. I mean, Josh Allen had multiple
- 37:08Speaker 4: plays dead in the water, just they were dead and
- 37:11Speaker 4: he turned the east. He's converting these wild plays. So
- 37:13Speaker 4: it's the combination of ceiling and he's the passing acumen
- 37:16Speaker 4: too that I think Burrow is a better passer, but
- 37:18Speaker 4: it's not like Alan. The gap from Burrow to Alan
- 37:21Speaker 4: as a passer is going to make up the ground
- 37:23Speaker 4: of the gap that Allan is as an athlete from Burrow, right,
- 37:26Speaker 4: And that's what kind of separates them from me.
- 37:28Speaker 1: All Right, I'll give this to you, guys. I do
- 37:31Speaker 1: feel like your analysis on Herbert Burrow Alan Mahomes is
- 37:38Speaker 1: more thoughtful and sophisticated than mine on Loving Burrow and
- 37:43Speaker 1: why I have him at number two. I'll give you that,
- 37:46Speaker 1: but I'm still taking my top ten over your top
- 37:48Speaker 1: ten overall because of the projections. That's what I would
- 37:54Speaker 1: say about that. Reminder. The podcast is proudly resented by
