- 0:00Please meet me in your Bibles in Revelation chapter 5.
- 0:04And we're going to begin by reading verse 8 down to verse
- 0:0814. The Word of God tells us here in
- 0:23verse 8 of chapter 5 of the Book of Revelation.
- 0:28And when he had taken the scroll, the four living
- 0:30creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb, each
- 0:35holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the
- 0:40prayers of the Saints. And they sang a new song,
- 0:43saying, Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its
- 0:47seals. For you were slain, and by your
- 0:50blood you ransomed people for God, from every tribe and
- 0:54language and people and nation. And you have made them a Kingdom
- 0:58and priest to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.
- 1:03Then I looked and I heard around the throne and the living
- 1:07creatures and the elders, the voice of many angels, numbering
- 1:10myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud
- 1:15voice, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and
- 1:19wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.
- 1:25And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under
- 1:28the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying to
- 1:31him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and
- 1:36honor and glory and might, forever and ever.
- 1:40And the four living creatures said, Amen.
- 1:43And the elders fell down and worshipped.
- 1:48Father, we ask that you teach us about worship.
- 1:51Guide us, lead us and make us true worshippers, for this is
- 1:57what you are looking for. We trust that you will do that.
- 2:02In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
- 2:06The main thought of this final section in Revelation chapter 5
- 2:12is worship. It's the very last word found in
- 2:17the very last part of chapter 5. Look at it again in verse 14.
- 2:21And the four living creatures said Amen.
- 2:25And the elders fell down and worshipped.
- 2:31I'm aware that last week you heard from Pastor Benda's
- 2:34message and in that message included a few very important
- 2:38thoughts pertaining to worship and what true worship entails.
- 2:42And I believe in God's Providence.
- 2:44He wants us to explore this further.
- 2:48You know, in the Book of Revelation, the word worship or
- 2:50worshipping appears around 22 times.
- 2:56I don't know about you, but that reflects how Christ wants us to
- 3:01really meditate and understand the importance of worship,
- 3:06considering the fact that this is the final book of the Bible.
- 3:10So here you and I are in the final book of Scripture, and
- 3:14what you find repeated among many things is worship, Worship,
- 3:19worship, worship, worship. So with this in mind, we're
- 3:24going to begin by answering a very simple yet imperative
- 3:27question. What is worship and following
- 3:33that, what does it mean to truly worship God?
- 3:39I think a helpful place to start is to understand the definition
- 3:45of the most commonly used word for worship in the New
- 3:48Testament. It is a word prosecenaeo.
- 3:51Prosecenaeo is the most common word for worship in the Greek,
- 3:55and what it means is very simple to kiss toward, not as an act of
- 4:03affection or endearment merely, but as a token of reverence, as
- 4:08a symbol of allegiance. A very familiar illustration
- 4:13might be what you would find commonly in history when
- 4:16somebody would approach royalty in ancient times.
- 4:19They would bow down and they would kiss their hand or even
- 4:23kiss their feet to express their honor and devotion toward the
- 4:29king. And so with this word, proscaneo
- 4:33is also the posture of bending down, sometimes even prostrating
- 4:37yourself. And that's why some people are
- 4:38more comfortable of defining this word as to bend down.
- 4:44So if we work with that definition, then we have our
- 4:46understanding of what worship means.
- 4:49It is a visible outward expression of 1's honor and
- 4:54devotion towards someone, and I think that's what most
- 4:59Christians believe worship to be.
- 5:04But we run into a problem. The problem, which is a good
- 5:08problem, is found in Jesus teaching because he deepens and
- 5:13he challenges our understanding of worship.
- 5:17If worship is purely just me externally demonstrating
- 5:21something of appreciation or allegiance, then how do we make
- 5:26sense of Jesus's words and Matthew and turn with me there?
- 5:30Chapter 15, verse 8 and 9. You know this very well, where
- 5:34Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees and he tells them in
- 5:37Matthew 15-8 and nine, this people honors me with their
- 5:41lips, but their heart is far from me.
- 5:45In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the
- 5:51commandments of men. Notice that Jesus is confirming
- 5:59that the spiritual leaders of his day honored God with their
- 6:03lips. Would you agree that that is a
- 6:05very clear demonstration of outward honor?
- 6:09Yes, it is. It's audible.
- 6:12It's it's visible, It's seen, it's heard.
- 6:15They honor me with their lists. Well, isn't that worship?
- 6:20Well, no, he clarifies, and he actually denounces it as vain
- 6:24worship. How?
- 6:27One crucial reason, the outward expression did not match an
- 6:31inward conviction. It's as simple as that.
- 6:35That's why he says, but their heart is far from me.
- 6:40So based on this, worship according to our Lord Jesus is
- 6:45far greater than bodily postures, is far greater than
- 6:50external acts. It's more than just audible
- 6:52expressions. Worship includes those displays
- 6:58of reverence and adoration. But that's not the essence.
- 7:04The essence of true worship is a matter of the heart.
- 7:07It is an inner experience. It is an inner reality.
- 7:15Christ is not after our lips saying things if our hearts
- 7:19don't believe them. Christ is not looking for us to
- 7:22bend our knees of our hearts are not completely surrendered.
- 7:27Christ is not satisfied with you and I offering acts of devotion
- 7:31and even expressions of adoration weekly in a designated
- 7:35location. If we don't carry that
- 7:38allegiance and that affection in our hearts outside of those
- 7:41meetings, what worship is according to Jesus is an inward
- 7:49delight in God that recognizes Him as supreme over all things.
- 7:56That's true worship. And Jesus Christ elaborates on
- 8:00this another very famous passage, and we'll turn them
- 8:03together in John chapter 4. And notice what he says here in
- 8:06verse 23 and 24. But the hour's coming, and now
- 8:10is here, when the true worshippers will worship the
- 8:13Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such
- 8:17people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who
- 8:22worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
- 8:28This sounds almost cryptic to some people.
- 8:30What does it mean that God is looking after those who worship
- 8:32in spirit and truth? Here's the essence of what
- 8:36Christ is getting at. True worship is informed by the
- 8:41truth of who God is, it must be informed by who God truly is,
- 8:46and it must impact and influence the deepest part of who you are,
- 8:53your spirit. So true worship includes being
- 8:59informed by who God truly is and that impacting my spirit, the
- 9:05deepest part of who I am. Listen carefully now.
- 9:11If I am familiar with truth, divine truth, but it does not
- 9:17affect my spirit, it will never lead to true worship.
- 9:24And if I have ideas and conceptions about God, but they
- 9:29are not grounded in truth, no matter how strongly I feel about
- 9:34those perceptions, no matter how much passion is behind them, it
- 9:38will not lead to true worship either.
- 9:42It needs to be informed by the truth, and it must impact the
- 9:47deepest part of who I am. That's true worship.
- 9:51Let me say it one more time. True worship is a heartfelt
- 9:58response to the truth of who God is, one that continually
- 10:03recognizes with absolute delight that God is supremely better,
- 10:10more glorious, more satisfying than anything else.
- 10:16And once that conviction is settled in your heart, the Lord
- 10:21in His grace gives us guidance of how we can then express that
- 10:26worship in a way that further glorifies Him.
- 10:31So if I bend down, if I serve, if I sing, if I do anything but
- 10:40my heart is not impacted or impressed or is convinced or
- 10:44settled that He is indeed supreme over all things.
- 10:48It's vain worship. Do you see?
- 10:53This is what Christ is truly after.
- 10:57And I want to bring this up to you because what we find in the
- 10:59text that we read in the opening of this message, I trust, is a
- 11:03wonderful example of how we can now then offer worship to God
- 11:08once it is chained around your heart and you're convinced He is
- 11:13above all things. We now receive instruction even
- 11:16in the passage that we just read, how then we can worship
- 11:18Him. Here's the message today I want
- 11:21to present to you three ways that we can worship the Lamb who
- 11:27is Jesus. Three ways, because we have an
- 11:31example laid out by us and for us with the worshippers who are
- 11:36in heaven. So let's come back to our text
- 11:39in Revelation 5, and the main focus will be verse eight.
- 11:44Look at it again. And when he had taken the
- 11:47scroll, that being Jesus, the four living creatures and the 24
- 11:51elders fell down before the Lamb highlight that they first fell
- 11:57down. Following that, we're told that
- 12:00each was holding a what a harp. I wonder what that means?
- 12:06And finally, golden bowls full of incense, which are the
- 12:11prayers of the Saints right there.
- 12:12You know what I see three ways I can worship Jesus after I
- 12:17determined He is my All in all in here.
- 12:20More importantly, I can express it in these ways.
- 12:24In fact, I must express them in these ways.
- 12:26Three ways #1 the way that I am called to worship Jesus Christ
- 12:32is with my body, with my body. That's symbolized here by the
- 12:39fact that these elders with the four living creatures fell down
- 12:42before the Lamb. You know what's so interesting?
- 12:46The four living creatures and these elders who fall down
- 12:51demonstrate something that you find most commonly in the Book
- 12:53of Revelation and the Gospels. In other words, for creatures
- 12:59and for humans to fall down before Jesus appears the most in
- 13:03the four Gospels and the final text of Holy Scripture.
- 13:06Why do you think that is? Why do you think that the most
- 13:10frequent records of this response to Jesus is in those
- 13:14two places? Because Christ is most visible.
- 13:20His presence is most real in the Gospels as He took on flesh, and
- 13:26here as we find Him in heaven in glory.
- 13:31His purity and His power demands such a response.
- 13:35The weightiness of His glory even in His humanity called for
- 13:39people to helplessly fall down before Him.
- 13:46But that bodily response is not emphasized in the Epistles.
- 13:51There is a different thing that is stress concerning our worship
- 13:55with our bodies, and this is something that is familiar to
- 13:59you. The priority that is placed on
- 14:02these physical frames and how they should respond to the glory
- 14:06of who Jesus is, is in practical holiness.
- 14:12Practical holiness. Not to say that I can't express
- 14:15my worship by bending down or even laying on my face, but
- 14:20that's not the mandatory posture in the letters to the churches.
- 14:26You know what it is your body in holiness.
- 14:32Paul tells us in First Corinthians 624, You were bought
- 14:36at a price. So glorify God in your body, in
- 14:42my body. And the Bible can't be any more
- 14:45clear than that. When Christ redeemed you and he
- 14:48paid a price for you, what's included in that ransom is your
- 14:53body. Every part of it belongs to Him.
- 14:57He owns your body, not just your soul, not just your spirit, your
- 15:02body. I'm sure you're like me and
- 15:06wondering, I've never doubted that.
- 15:10But what does it look like for my body to worship Him?
- 15:15What does that look like? And I believe it means two
- 15:18things. It includes what you do with
- 15:21this body and what you don't do. 2 main categories that you find
- 15:26throughout the Bible. How I glorify and worship God
- 15:29with this body is what I do with it and what I don't do.
- 15:33It's positive and it is negative.
- 15:37It advances and then it refrains.
- 15:40There's offense and there's defense.
- 15:42There's go and there's no. And let me give you an example
- 15:49of that dual emphasis in the New Testament.
- 15:51Let's go to the book of James. Let's go to chapter 1 and let's
- 15:54look at one verse, James 127. James says in chapter 1, verse
- 16:0827, religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father
- 16:12is this to visit orphans and widows and their affliction and
- 16:17to keep oneself unstained from the world.
- 16:22Do you see the positive and the negative?
- 16:25You see the offense and the defense.
- 16:27You see the go and the no. So here's what this means.
- 16:32We're after this right? Pure religion, pure worship,
- 16:34glorifying God in a pure way. According to James, whenever I
- 16:38sacrifice my time, my energy, my focus, waking up early, for
- 16:44example, earlier than usual, traveling longer than I prefer,
- 16:50attending to somebody else's needs, even at the expense of my
- 16:52own, every time I do that in the name of Christ, in service to
- 16:56others, that's worship. That's worship.
- 17:02An example that James gives us is this.
- 17:04Picking up your feet, choosing rather to go outside instead of
- 17:11lounging at home, maybe even putting in your hands a plate of
- 17:17food or some take out that you buy with your hard earned money
- 17:21so that you can spend the evening visiting a lonely widow
- 17:25or an overlooked orphan. When you do that, my brother and
- 17:29my sister, according to James, you're worshipping.
- 17:36But this is not the only thing. It's not just in what we do.
- 17:38And again, this is just one example of many ways that we can
- 17:41worship by what we do. It's also in what we reject and
- 17:46to keep oneself unstained from the world.
- 17:50I'm not sure if you've ever seen it this way, but every time you
- 17:53and I deny the temptation to indulge the flesh or to conform
- 17:59to the patterns of the world, that also to God is worship.
- 18:05So when I'm with a group of people and a name comes up and
- 18:09that person is not in that circle and there begins to be
- 18:13backbiting and the tearing of that person's reputation.
- 18:16And here I am now, because it's a consensus.
- 18:19Everybody's saying the same thing and sharing the goods.
- 18:22And I feel that urge to to say something or make a comment or
- 18:25contribute my own silly observation about a person's
- 18:30person's way of life that that really may not even be true to
- 18:33begin with. But I choose to instead reject
- 18:37it and keep my mouth shut, or even more than that, speak up to
- 18:40their defense. That's worship.
- 18:44That's worship. Or when I have been tired after
- 18:48a long days of work and my mind now is being pulled by the ropes
- 18:53of lust to imagine things and fantasize things that I
- 18:57shouldn't be fantasizing about. And I begin to now come up with
- 19:01a personal appointment with my screen to visit websites that I
- 19:04shouldn't be visiting. And instead I canceled that
- 19:07appointment. That's worship.
- 19:12That's worship. Or here I am now on a Saturday
- 19:16evening, no plans. There was no clean up day at
- 19:18church, no basketball event, no volleyball, no BBQ, no nothing.
- 19:23My phone is quiet. But hey, I get a text from some
- 19:26friends, family friends actually, but they don't know
- 19:28Christ. And they say, what are you doing
- 19:30tonight? Let's go to this place.
- 19:31And you just read the name and you Google the maps and you see
- 19:34it. OK?
- 19:34This is not a place that's going to help my testimony.
- 19:36If anybody finds me there, that's going to be trouble.
- 19:42And surely there's going to be opportunity to sin there more
- 19:45than if I stay home. And So what you do instead,
- 19:50though you're bored out of your mind, you kindly decline.
- 19:54And more than that, you say you listen.
- 19:56Since you reached out to me, what are you doing?
- 19:58Tomorrow, let's go to church together.
- 20:00That's worship. That's worship.
- 20:04And here's what that means for you and I.
- 20:07That true worship toward Jesus Christ is totally achievable by
- 20:12any of us. Common acts, small sacrifices,
- 20:18private appointments, visitations.
- 20:21A simple call to encourage a weary soul.
- 20:25Things that you don't think are really impactful or monumental,
- 20:29like denying thoughts and denying actions and refraining
- 20:33yourself from evil, wicked company.
- 20:35All of that is worship and it's achievable.
- 20:39Can you imagine? So we fall down, yes, not
- 20:44physically, but even, as we heard last week, internally.
- 20:49I surrender my body by what I do and by what I don't do.
- 20:53That's a fragrance to Jesus. But we move on.
- 20:58We come back to Revelation 5A and what do we see?
- 21:00That they didn't just fall down before the Lamb.
- 21:02They were each holding a harp. Now there is no need to over
- 21:08spiritualize. There is no need to allegorize
- 21:11this detail. Remember, context is king.
- 21:14Context will keep you safe. Every time you see the word harp
- 21:18mentioned in the Book of Revelation, every single time
- 21:21it's accompanied by singing. It's here in Revelation 58.
- 21:25You find in Revelation 14 two, Revelation 15 two, Whenever a
- 21:29harp appears, right after, there's going to be some
- 21:33singing. So what do we find here?
- 21:36It's so obvious that Christ is worshipped in our praise.
- 21:43Christ is worshipped in our heartfelt singing.
- 21:47Not just our bodily sacrifice, but what we do with our lips.
- 21:52And here's the part that moved me the most about this detail.
- 21:55How many of them held harps? Each of them, every single one
- 22:02in attendance had a harp. And I don't think it means that
- 22:05every single one of them were musically gifted.
- 22:07This is symbolic. What it does mean is that every
- 22:10single one we're called to praise.
- 22:12It wasn't optional. Praise is not optional.
- 22:17We're all called to it. But my person, I know your
- 22:19personality. It's OK, I'll tell you.
- 22:21The Spirit will help you because Christ is worshipped when you
- 22:24praise. Now here's so something so
- 22:27significant. We can spend a great time
- 22:30exploring this, but I want to offer one reason, just one
- 22:33simple reason why praise is a glorifying form of worship.
- 22:37What is it about praise that Christ wants for us?
- 22:39To me we sang it. Praise the Lord.
- 22:41Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
- 22:42You find it throughout the Bible.
- 22:43But why does he want it? Because it publicly acknowledges
- 22:50God. This is just one reason.
- 22:52There are many reasons why we praise, but let me give you one.
- 22:54It publicly acknowledges God as the source of all good with
- 23:02passion and joy. It's a testimony.
- 23:06You are testifying. And we went to James, right?
- 23:11Let's go to James again. Look at James 5, James 5, verse
- 23:1813. James, as he's wrapping up his
- 23:22epistle, gives some final exhortations to different
- 23:24members of the churches who might have different heart
- 23:29conditions, and he gives words of wisdom by the Spirit.
- 23:34Notice what he says in this one verse.
- 23:36Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.
- 23:40Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
- 23:47Two questions I have. Why does James exhort Christians
- 23:52who are suffering to pray? Because there's a tempting
- 23:57alternative. When we're suffering, what is it
- 23:59to complain, to murmur, to maybe even contemplate vengeance?
- 24:08Depending on the source of your pain, it's easily possible for
- 24:15those who are enduring any kind of affliction to preoccupy their
- 24:19efforts and their energy. Their knee jerk reaction is to
- 24:23spew out all their problems to another or even to themselves.
- 24:29And genius saying no, no, reserve that energy and go
- 24:32before God. Pour that out before the Lord.
- 24:37OK, that's settled. Why does he tell those who are
- 24:40cheerful? Now, what does he mean by
- 24:42cheerful? The context suggests those who
- 24:44are not weighed down by discouragement, those who are
- 24:47not trying to fight off anxiety, those who are essentially happy,
- 24:53those that you would ask, how are things going in your life?
- 24:55Wonderful. I mean, no matter what sphere,
- 24:58look at it, everything seems to be going smooth there.
- 25:00There's so much ease. It's, it's wonderful, it's
- 25:02great. Those kind of Christians, why
- 25:06does he tell them to sing praise?
- 25:09You know why? Because in the same way that
- 25:13those who are suffering will forget God in prayer, those who
- 25:16are cheerful tend to forget God in their happiness.
- 25:23And so you need to praise when you're cheerful.
- 25:27What does that mean? Here's what it means.
- 25:28Praise repositions us every single time.
- 25:33Praise has the ability, because it's designed by God, to give
- 25:37Him the ultimate credit for whatever good that you are
- 25:39enjoying in that season. Praise points your heart toward
- 25:45heaven. Now one might say this, and I
- 25:50can see why somebody might ask or wonder, well, can I just give
- 25:55God glory and thanks in plain speech?
- 25:59Thank you, Lord, for all the good that I am enjoying.
- 26:01I recognize that you are the one who authored all of this.
- 26:04Can I just do that? You can't do that.
- 26:07But there's something unique about praise.
- 26:12It weaves melody, it weaves rhythm into your words, and it
- 26:20has a way of reorienting your emotions so that they are now
- 26:25targeting the Lord and giving it towards God.
- 26:29It brings the cheerfulness to its rightful place.
- 26:32That's what praise has the ability to do, more than just
- 26:36simple words. It caused you to tap into
- 26:39something deeper in the human heart, the human experience, and
- 26:43it associates the joy and the delight with beauty, melody and
- 26:47rhythm and says, Oh Lord, you are the one.
- 26:49All these good feelings that I'm feeling, it sanctifies your
- 26:52emotions. All the things that you're
- 26:56knowing here, all the things that make your step lighter, all
- 26:59the things that make your day easier.
- 27:01What praise does, it gathers all that up and says this is because
- 27:04of God, this is because of him. Praise contains the power to
- 27:12take all the cheerfulness that you are knowing and to lay it at
- 27:17the foot of God's throne and saying this is because of you.
- 27:22Now, we would make a great mistake if we think that James
- 27:24is teaching that we can only offer praise when you're in a
- 27:27good mood. Anyone cheerful, sing praise.
- 27:31If you're not cheerful, well, you don't have to sing.
- 27:33You think that's what James really saying?
- 27:35Absolutely not. Scripture would tell us
- 27:37otherwise. All he's doing here is simply
- 27:40addressing those who might miss the opportunity to worship God,
- 27:45especially when all is well. So those who may be in a
- 27:51cheerful state and not know, how do I give glory to God in this
- 27:54way? James says.
- 27:55Sing praise, be intentional, come ready to offer that
- 28:01sacrifice, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
- 28:06And perhaps you're somebody who's convinced that praise
- 28:08isn't really all that important, or again, like I said earlier,
- 28:11doesn't really fit your personality well.
- 28:15If you're serious about worshipping God, I trust, and I
- 28:17charge you actually, to ask God to see the wisdom, the beauty,
- 28:22and the honor that comes from giving him praise.
- 28:24Each one of these creatures and elders held harps in their
- 28:28hands. One more thing, we worship God
- 28:33with our bodies. We worship God with our praise.
- 28:36Lastly, we worship God with our prayers.
- 28:40Not only were there harps, but lastly in verse 8 and golden
- 28:43bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the Saints.
- 28:47This part minister to me deeply. Do you know why?
- 28:52Because if you've ever doubted that your prayers are
- 28:54significant. If you've ever feared that your
- 28:57prayers go unheard, look where they find themselves.
- 29:04Look what happens with your prayers.
- 29:07Be set free from those lies. God collects every supplication,
- 29:14every intercession, every utterance of Thanksgiving, and
- 29:19places them in golden bowls. Where?
- 29:24In the backroom? No, near His throne.
- 29:29It's a perfume to him. It's an aroma to him.
- 29:34What is your prayers? Now, here's what's amazing.
- 29:37He doesn't say the prayers of world leaders.
- 29:41He doesn't say the prayers of influential thinkers.
- 29:44He doesn't even limit it to prayers of those ministers who
- 29:47shaped and redirected nations. What does it say in verse 8?
- 29:51The prayers of the Saints. That includes the weakest of the
- 29:58Saints, the feeblest of the Saints, dare I say even the
- 30:04inconsistent St. All the Saints who had enough
- 30:08faith to believe that God hears them when they cry out them.
- 30:12God bottles up those prayers and he blends them in these golden
- 30:17bowls and he keeps them there with high honor.
- 30:20And that's really the take away from this.
- 30:23No matter what you think about prayer, if you think it's
- 30:26important or not, whatever your deep understanding of it is in
- 30:30Scripture, here's one thing that you can leave with.
- 30:31God honors our prayers. God is pleased with our prayers.
- 30:35It brings the light to Him. Or else why use this kind of
- 30:39imagery? Now, if prayer is an act of
- 30:44worship, how does that work? If this scene again demonstrates
- 30:50robust worship, how does prayer fit into that?
- 30:54And I want to present you at least two ways.
- 30:57First, prayer has been given by God to make communion with God
- 31:01possible. It's only through prayer.
- 31:05I said this so many times before.
- 31:06When you look at the Tabernacle with all the different
- 31:08furnishings in it, the closest article to the glory of God
- 31:13behind that veil is the altar of incense.
- 31:17There's so many things that means, but one practical point
- 31:20is this. The closest that you can get to
- 31:23God is in prayer, and prayer has been given by God to make
- 31:29communion with him. Though yes, on this side of
- 31:31eternity it's invisible, it's still very much real.
- 31:36Prayer says, Lord, my heart yearns for fellowship with you.
- 31:42And if you've given me prayer as the doorway to know the closest
- 31:46communion with you, then I will designate time.
- 31:50I will get away from all distractions and I will sit at
- 31:53your feet and I will open my heart in my mouth and pray,
- 31:59believing and showing you that I want to be with you more than
- 32:03anything else. So prayer is worship in that it
- 32:08demonstrates to God that you truly want to know Him, not just
- 32:14theologically but experientially, not just with
- 32:17head knowledge and head pursuit, but heart knowledge and heart
- 32:20pursuit prayer. But secondly, the way prayer
- 32:25becomes worship is that it invites God to intervene in such
- 32:31a way that the testimony it would produce would grant him
- 32:34greater glory. Prayer is the invitation of
- 32:38God's intervention into my situation.
- 32:42That's what prayer is, and that's what we find here with
- 32:46these prayers that are symbolized as incense.
- 32:49It's not the last time it shows up in Revelation.
- 32:53Go to Revelation 8. Notice where they reappear in
- 33:00Revelation 8, verse 3 and verse 5.
- 33:03What to verse 5? Notice what John describes.
- 33:07And another Angel came and stood at the altar with a golden
- 33:10censor, and he was given much incense to offer with the
- 33:14prayers of all the Saints on the golden altar before the throne.
- 33:19And the smoke of the incense with the prayers of the Saints
- 33:23rose before God from the hand of the Angel.
- 33:27Then the Angel took the sensor and filled it with fire from the
- 33:30altar and threw it on the earth. And there were peels of Thunder,
- 33:35rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
- 33:38So much can be said about this. We're approaching Revelation 8.
- 33:41I'll keep the extra Jesus for that someday.
- 33:44Here's the main take away. The prayers of God's people that
- 33:47were stored in heaven don't stay there.
- 33:53God gathers them and he returns them to the earth fulfilled.
- 34:00That's what happens to your prayers and mine.
- 34:01As beautiful as it is to imagine that my prayers go up to heaven
- 34:05and God gathers them and collects them into golden bowls
- 34:07of incense as a sweet smelling aroma, the principle is here
- 34:13that he can't take those prayers and launch them right back into
- 34:17the world in a way where when you witness the answer, you go,
- 34:20this is God. This isn't coincidence and
- 34:22nobody can argue. Prayers are designed to come
- 34:27back into the world and make such a mark that God would
- 34:30receive glory from it. Do you remember what Paul told
- 34:32the Corinthians when he beckoned them to pray for him and his
- 34:34ministry team? Let me remind you, in 2nd
- 34:37Corinthians 111, you also must help us by prayer so that many
- 34:43will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us
- 34:47through the prayers of many. Oh, Church of Corinth, pray.
- 34:52And I said this before too. The Corinthians, were they like
- 34:55the most exemplary of Christians?
- 35:00You thought whatever church you were a part of had issues.
- 35:04This church had problems and yet Paul the apostle says, would you
- 35:08guys pray for me? Why would he say that unless he
- 35:10believed that God would even hear their prayers?
- 35:14Pray. Why?
- 35:15What's what's Paul's heart? Yeah, I want to be delivered
- 35:17from this, but pray so that many will give thanks on our behalf
- 35:22as a result of the prayers of many.
- 35:24I want God to be glorified and answered.
- 35:26Prayer. That's how it becomes worship.
- 35:28It becomes worship when I commune with him and God says,
- 35:31like Paul, behold, he is praying.
- 35:34And it also becomes worship because it's an invitation for
- 35:36God to crash into the world and for people to say there is a
- 35:39living God and he answers prayer.
- 35:43Let me give you a final thought before we conclude here.
- 35:45As precious as individual prayers are to God, as personal
- 35:51communion is a calling for each of us, the Bible doesn't say in
- 35:54Revelation 5A that those bowls had the prayers of the Saint or
- 36:00a St. the Saints, plural. There's something especially
- 36:08special when we give our prayers to God as a church, when we
- 36:14combine our voices together and cry out to the Lord that to him
- 36:22is a sweet aroma with all our backgrounds and all their
- 36:25different testimony. And this is just real.
- 36:28All their different ages, right? All their different history with
- 36:32God. When we when we come
- 36:34collectively and designate time to now unify our voice and bring
- 36:38it before him, I see something here that's especially special
- 36:43to God. So how do we worship God as a
- 36:46church? Not just on Sunday for an hour
- 36:48and a half, two hours. You can come on Wednesday too.
- 36:52And that also becomes worship to him.
- 36:53With one voice, we glorify the Lord.
- 36:55The prayers of the Saints. Yes, this means the prayers of
- 37:00the Saints throughout history, but also I'm sure, means the
- 37:03prayers of God's people when we come and combine our voices
- 37:06together. Why do we worship?
- 37:10You just heard three ways of how we can worship, but is there any
- 37:13indication of why? What should stimulate me to
- 37:17worship with my body, to worship in my praise, to worship in my
- 37:21prayers? Revelation 59 and 10, they sang
- 37:24a new song saying where they are you to take the scroll to open
- 37:27its seals. For you are slain, and by your
- 37:30blood you ransom people for God from every tribe and language
- 37:33and people and nation, and you've made them a Kingdom and
- 37:36priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.
- 37:38Why? Why?
- 37:39Why? Because he died because he shed
- 37:44his blood. Why should I give up my body, my
- 37:49rights, my impulses? Why should I consecrate that to
- 37:51the Lord? Both.
- 37:52Both positively negative. Because He bought your body.
- 37:58Why should I praise? How can I praise when my faith
- 38:01is clouded by unbelief? When I'm trying to weather this
- 38:06tornado of turbulence and trials?
- 38:09Well, let me give you one reason to praise.
- 38:11He died for you. He forgave every wicked thing
- 38:16that you've ever done. Well, why should I pray?
- 38:21How can I pray? What can motivate me to actually
- 38:24make time for that? Well, do you realize the high
- 38:26price that he paid to make communion possible?
- 38:30That God, because of His Son, makes your heart his new home.
- 38:36And now no matter where you are, you can pause and you can give
- 38:39intentionality to your communication with Christ and He
- 38:43hears you as though he was face to face.
- 38:45Why not pray when he shed his blood to ransom people for God
- 38:50and he did. It doesn't discriminate.
- 38:52Every tribe, every language, people and nation.
- 38:56No matter where you're from or what you've done, He's purchased
- 38:58you. Surely he deserves my body, my
- 39:01praise, my prayers. I don't know if you caught this,
- 39:07but in closing here, there is actually an order of worship
- 39:12that's laid out. Did you notice it?
- 39:15There's actually a pattern of concentric circles of worship
- 39:18described in this chapter. Look at it again with me in
- 39:21verse 8. And when he had taken the
- 39:23scroll, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell
- 39:28down before the Lamb. Pause.
- 39:29Who? Who are we seeing falling down
- 39:30before the Lamb, the four living creatures, and the 24 elders?
- 39:34But it doesn't stop there. You come down to verse 11.
- 39:37What do you find? John says.
- 39:39Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living
- 39:41creatures and the elders, the voice of many angels, numbering
- 39:45myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands.
- 39:47Now we go from the elders, the creatures, to innumerable angels
- 39:53who are now joining them in worship.
- 39:55Does it end there? It doesn't.
- 39:58Verse 13. And I heard every creature in
- 40:02heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and
- 40:07all that is in them saying to him who sits on the throne into
- 40:10the Lamb. Pause.
- 40:12Show me in the Bible where Jesus is worshipped.
- 40:14Right here. Jesus is an exalted, created
- 40:20being. Millions believe that.
- 40:23Oh really? So why isn't He on the side of
- 40:25creation, worshipping God? Why is He on the side of the
- 40:29throne being worshipped by every creature?
- 40:32Remember that? Remember that to Him who sits on
- 40:37the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and
- 40:41might, forever and ever. Jesus Christ is being worshipped
- 40:45by who now? Absolutely every living thing
- 40:48that has breath. What's the point of this
- 40:53observation? Well, the obvious 1 is that He
- 40:55is worthy of such worship and he will receive all honor.
- 41:00Here's the practical inspiration.
- 41:02What happens with worship in the scene?
- 41:04Is it growing or is it diminishing?
- 41:07It's growing. Is it for you?
- 41:14Is worship with my body growing? Is it becoming stronger?
- 41:18Is it becoming weaker? Is my praise becoming more
- 41:22authentic or more artificial? Is my prayer life deepening or
- 41:26am I drifting further from intimacy with God as it is
- 41:30growing here? Apply it to your life, my dear
- 41:32brother and sister, and ask yourself this.
- 41:34Is worship growing or is it weakening?
- 41:41Is it permeating more and more of my life for other things
- 41:45being worshipped more and more instead of Christ?
- 41:52The instruction here has made it grow.
- 41:55May it take over every part of who you are.
- 41:58You know one of the most fascinating things about the
- 42:00Christian life among the hundreds of things that we can
- 42:03talk about. Can I leave you with one?
- 42:05God says your body is a temple. Your body is a temple.
- 42:11What happened? The temple worship.
- 42:16When do you ever escape your body?
- 42:18You don't until you die. You know what that means?
- 42:20If my body is a temple, then I'm called to give worship all the
- 42:23time. How well you heard it.
- 42:27I hope by what I do, but I don't do with opportunities to praise,
- 42:33especially when I'm cheerful. I'm not going to forget God as
- 42:37the source of my gladness and my prayers.
- 42:40Oh Lord, if you treasure my prayers in this way, then let me
- 42:43offer it up to you. I want to express that I love
- 42:45you and I adore you. I want to fellowship with you
- 42:48and Lord, here's this problem, here's this need, here's the
- 42:50situation. There's a way.
- 42:51We're child, there's my church. I'm going to pray and ask that
- 42:54you come through so that when you do, you're glorified and you
- 42:57are worshiped. May we worship.
- 43:01Lord, We thank you for the service.
- 43:03We thank you that the Father is seeking after such worshippers,
- 43:08and Lord, we praise you that in this church there are many who
- 43:12worship in spirit and truth. May it be a growing reality in
- 43:16each of our lives. Help us worship You, Lord.
- 43:21Help us imitate this site that we just witnessed in heaven.
- 43:26We love you with all of our hearts, and Lord, before any
- 43:30external act, we want it to be more true in our hearts.
- 43:34Inspire it within the Lord so that it would be real when
- 43:37people see and hear it. And when you see and hear it,
- 43:40more importantly, we give you thanks and we worship you in
- 43:44Jesus name, Amen. Let's stand and let's fulfill #2
- 43:51Let's praise him. Let's praise him.
