- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm the host Anna McGivern for October 30th.
- 0:12Today is National Candy Corn Day, a celebration of one of
- 0:15America's most divisive Halloween treats.
- 0:19Observed every year on October 30th, just one day before
- 0:23Halloween, this holiday honors the Tri colored candy that
- 0:27people either love for LEB to hate.
- 0:31Candy corn was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger of the
- 0:36Wonderly Candy Company in Philadelphia.
- 0:38Golitz Confectionery Company, now known as Jelly Belly, began
- 0:43mass producing it in 1898 and continues to make it today.
- 0:47Originally called chicken feed and marketed to rural America,
- 0:53candy corn was revolutionary for its time.
- 0:56The candy designed to look like something from nature.
- 0:59That labor intensive process originally required workers to
- 1:03fill molds by hand, adding each color layer separately.
- 1:08What makes National Candy Corn Day fascinating is that the
- 1:11candy corn has remained essentially unchanged for over
- 1:15140 years. In a world of constantly
- 1:21evolving candy innovation, candy corn is the defiantly old
- 1:26fashioned. Despite, or perhaps because of
- 1:30its polarizing nature, approximately 35,000,000 lbs of
- 1:35candy corn are produced annually, making it one of
- 1:39America's top selling Halloween candy.
- 1:42And that brings us to today's quote from writer Oscar Wilde,
- 1:46who once said be yourself. Everyone else is taken.
- 1:52Wilde's famous advice about authenticity captures something
- 1:55essential about candy corn. In a candy aisle filled with
- 1:59chocolate bars trying to be the next big thing and new flavor
- 2:02innovations appearing constantly, candy corn remains
- 2:07unapologetically itself. It hasn't rebranded, hasn't
- 2:11modernized its recipe, hasn't tried to appeal to everyone.
- 2:17It's just candy corn. Bake it or leave it.
- 2:21Think about what that means. Candy corn knows exactly what it
- 2:25is. It's not trying to be chocolate.
- 2:27It's not pretending to be sophisticated.
- 2:30It's not chasing trends. Some people think it tastes like
- 2:34sugary wax. Others can't get enough of it.
- 2:38Candy corn doesn't care either way.
- 2:41It's been the same for 140 years and will likely remain the same
- 2:44for 140 more. This is what Wilde understood
- 2:47and what Candy Corn demonstrates.
- 2:50Authenticity is powerful when you're genuinely yourself, not
- 2:54trying to please everyone, not changing based on criticism, not
- 2:58chasing what's popular, you find your people, the ones who love
- 3:03you, love you for exactly what you are.
- 3:06The ones who don't, well, everyone else has already taken
- 3:11anyway. National Candy Corn celebrates
- 3:15this kind of confident authenticity.
- 3:18So today, the day before Halloween, embrace the spirit of
- 3:22National Candy Corn Day and Wild's wisdom all about being
- 3:26yourself. Grab some candy corn if you
- 3:29enjoy it, and don't apologize for it.
- 3:32If you hate candy corn, that's fine too.
- 3:35Be authentic about your preferences, but more
- 3:38importantly, think about where in your life you're trying too
- 3:41hard to be something you're not, where you're chasing trends
- 3:44instead of being confidently yourself.
- 3:47What would change if you embraced your authentic
- 3:50preferences, your quirks and personality the way that candy
- 3:55corn embraces its Tri colored sweetness?
- 3:58Remember Wilde's wisdom? Everyone else is already taken.
- 4:03The world needs you to be yourself, even if that means
- 4:08some people won't like it. That's going to do it.
- 4:13For today, I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be
- 4:18back tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:25with another daily quote.
