- 0:07Speaker 1: This Mead podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer
- 0:15Speaker 1: new Art, and today we're joined by Janice Ptelis, Ryan Callahan,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Brodie Henderson, Garrett Long, Krian Schneider, Dan Chumbler, and Maggie Smith. Now, Dan,
- 0:24Speaker 1: this is your first time on the podcast, So tell
- 0:27Speaker 1: folks what you do here at meat Eater. Thanks Spencer,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'm Dan Chumbler. I'm CEO. You got you got more
- 0:34Speaker 1: than that? Right? You got more than that? Right? Like
- 0:37Speaker 1: people think Steve runs the ship here, but but this
- 0:40Speaker 1: is the guy that does. No. I don't know about that.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But I enjoy working with all of you, and uh,
- 0:47Speaker 1: my job is really interesting because I got I get
- 0:49Speaker 1: to do a lot of varied things and uh this
- 0:52Speaker 1: being one of them. Sorry, I look forward to beating
- 0:55Speaker 1: Garrett today. What's your favorite part of being CEO at
- 0:59Speaker 1: meat Eater? Is it picking all the hunts that Steve
- 1:02Speaker 1: is gonna go on? Yeah? I The only reason I
- 1:06Speaker 1: know where he is is because his assistant updates my calendar.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Other than that, I have no idea where he is generally, Um,
- 1:16Speaker 1: but no, my favorite, uh favorite aspect of working here
- 1:20Speaker 1: is really with the people. Um. I love that we
- 1:25Speaker 1: all share the same passions and we enjoy working with
- 1:30Speaker 1: one another, and that's been a lot of fun. Well
- 1:32Speaker 1: said Yanni is very excited to have you here. He
- 1:34Speaker 1: was talking before we started recording that, Uh, the vibes
- 1:37Speaker 1: are good in the room because we got Dan in
- 1:39Speaker 1: the room. Now. If you're not familiar, this is a
- 1:41Speaker 1: ten round quiz show with questions from meat eaters four
- 1:44Speaker 1: verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking, and there's
- 1:48Speaker 1: a prize. Meat Eater will donate five dollars to the
- 1:51Speaker 1: conservation organization of the winners choosing. And each week here
- 1:55Speaker 1: on Meat Eater Trivia, we reveal a new stet. This week,
- 1:58Speaker 1: we are formalizing the Shelby Index. The Shelby index is
- 2:02Speaker 1: a way to measure how difficult reasy a game of
- 2:05Speaker 1: trivia is. Shelby is my wife, and each night before
- 2:08Speaker 1: I come record these shows, I asked her these questions
- 2:11Speaker 1: to see how she does. Normally, she gets about half
- 2:14Speaker 1: as many right as our winner. So if the Shelby
- 2:17Speaker 1: index is a two, then that's a damn tough round.
- 2:20Speaker 1: In our winner is projected to get four, or if
- 2:23Speaker 1: she gets a four, then it's a less challenging batch
- 2:25Speaker 1: of questions and our winner should end up with an eight.
- 2:29Speaker 1: The Shelby index for this episode is a four and
- 2:31Speaker 1: a half, so today's winner should be in the ballpark
- 2:35Speaker 1: of nine. It's a very conscientious word choice. There's a
- 2:39Speaker 1: less challenging round, not easy. I thought about that one
- 2:43Speaker 1: a lot now. The previous game of trivia, we talked
- 2:47Speaker 1: about Alabama White sauce, to which Phil commented that he
- 2:50Speaker 1: thought it's the same thing as comeback sauce. Well, Ryan
- 2:54Speaker 1: McCarty wrote in to say that Alabama White sauce and
- 2:57Speaker 1: comeback sauce are very different things, though both are Mayo based.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Comeback sauce differs by using chili paste, catchup dijon mustard
- 3:06Speaker 1: in a slew of other spices. Comeback sauce was born
- 3:09Speaker 1: in Mississippi, and the name originates from a type of
- 3:12Speaker 1: salutation that's common in the state. Now, Phil, can you
- 3:15Speaker 1: put on your best Southern accident help me out with
- 3:17Speaker 1: this next part? Y'all come back now you hear? I'm
- 3:21Speaker 1: so sorry, dude, You make one more try at it? Here?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Did do it? Do it? One more time? This that
- 3:26Speaker 1: was perfect. What are you talking? This is how comeback
- 3:29Speaker 1: sauce gets its name. Y'all come back now you're here.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Very good, Phil, feel so talented. I don't think we
- 3:35Speaker 1: ever talked about how you were in the Sound of
- 3:37Speaker 1: Music in Bozeman. I was, yeah, we did. We did
- 3:41Speaker 1: not talk about it. I kind of kept it on
- 3:42Speaker 1: the downlow until Spencer decided to shout her from the rooftop.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So it's just very kind. I don't want me to
- 3:46Speaker 1: do that. No, that was a totally fine, totally fine.
- 3:49Speaker 1: It's part where you playing. I was Franz the Nazi
- 3:52Speaker 1: sympathizing Butler. A lot of fun. No, and I mean
- 3:56Speaker 1: it was I did I think Spencers bring up the
- 3:58Speaker 1: fact that I had spoken in English accent throughout the
- 4:01Speaker 1: Phil is so talented. I I told him he had
- 4:04Speaker 1: the best accent of the whole cast and it meant it. Uh.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Very proud of you, Phil for how well you did.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It was a fun play to watch. Yes, I did
- 4:15Speaker 1: with that. We were on the Meat Eater Trivia play
- 4:17Speaker 1: the drop. Phil. Look, I need to know what I
- 4:22Speaker 1: stand wind everything. How's saying just tend to win everything? Suckers?
- 4:37Speaker 1: Christian question one of The topic is conservation. What type
- 4:43Speaker 1: of biome has experienced the most extinction in the last
- 4:47Speaker 1: five hundred years? This is multiple choice and your options
- 4:50Speaker 1: are deserts, islands, tundra or forest. What type of biome
- 4:57Speaker 1: has experienced the most extinction in the last five hundred years? Deserts, islands,
- 5:04Speaker 1: tundra or forests? How do you feel about this? Johniet
- 5:11Speaker 1: kind of a grin on your face, trying to hide
- 5:13Speaker 1: it even well, No, because I feel like the the
- 5:17Speaker 1: hints are just alive with you know, within this question.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We're having a hard time, you know, not blurting something
- 5:25Speaker 1: out right. What type of bio has experienced the most
- 5:28Speaker 1: extinction in the last five hundred years? Does everybody have
- 5:31Speaker 1: an answer? Were the choices again deserts, islands, tundra or forests?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Had a lot of writing over there. Dan had to
- 5:42Speaker 1: change his answer, just danswing. You know, usually when people
- 5:47Speaker 1: change their answer in this game, it bites him in
- 5:49Speaker 1: the two bunch if if I'm wrong I'm feeling about
- 5:55Speaker 1: on this one, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 5:57Speaker 1: have Garrett saying islands, Maggie saying islands, Brodie saying forests,
- 6:03Speaker 1: Korean saying tundra, Cal saying islands, Janice saying tundra, and
- 6:07Speaker 1: Dan saying tundra. The correct answer is islands. Here's where
- 6:13Speaker 1: I start arguing. Okay, let's hear it. An island could
- 6:17Speaker 1: have a desert biome, a forest biome, or a touch
- 6:20Speaker 1: of pick island, because like, because an island and it
- 6:27Speaker 1: encompasses all of them, a biome is of like specific environment.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I agree, I agree. We're just I'm using your strategy
- 6:39Speaker 1: and you didn't strategy. You're gonna have to talk to
- 6:42Speaker 1: the folks that have labeled these bioms of species. Extinctions
- 6:47Speaker 1: have occurred on islands. According to the Island Conservation Group,
- 6:51Speaker 1: the factor the leading factor is humans and the invasive
- 6:55Speaker 1: species they bring island. Plants and animals are so vulnerable
- 6:59Speaker 1: because they have small populations, restricted genetic diversity, and narrow
- 7:04Speaker 1: home ranges. I do think the crux of that question
- 7:07Speaker 1: is is you know, and we kind of lean towards
- 7:10Speaker 1: animal species but plant species. But it doesn't change the
- 7:15Speaker 1: fact that you could have a desert island, forest island,
- 7:18Speaker 1: or a tundra island with cow. You should have rowed
- 7:20Speaker 1: down island said you have all of those on one
- 7:23Speaker 1: island you could. I doubt it. Tundra, desert and pretty.
- 7:31Speaker 1: That would be a great island question to Moving on
- 7:33Speaker 1: the topic is fishing. This next great question comes to
- 7:36Speaker 1: is via Tucker Baker. If you have a question you
- 7:39Speaker 1: think is right for meat Eater Trivia, you can send
- 7:41Speaker 1: it to trivia at the meat eater dot com. Dale
- 7:45Speaker 1: Hollow Lake, which is where the world record smallmouth was caught,
- 7:49Speaker 1: is a reservoir that straddles to states. Name one of
- 7:53Speaker 1: those states. Dale Hollow Lake, which is where the world
- 7:59Speaker 1: wreck small mouth was caught, is a reservoir that straddles
- 8:03Speaker 1: to states. I need you to name one of those states.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Does anybody in this room know where this like is?
- 8:12Speaker 1: Garrett had a pretty confident answer over here, or do
- 8:15Speaker 1: you just like right down the first state you thought of.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I feel moderately confident. The rest of the room not
- 8:23Speaker 1: is confident. Again, looking for what two states share Dale
- 8:28Speaker 1: Hollow Lake, but we only need one of them, just
- 8:34Speaker 1: one state. I know two regions of the country that
- 8:37Speaker 1: are known for big small amount. You think you got
- 8:42Speaker 1: it right, that's better than me because one region of
- 8:47Speaker 1: the United States where they use the word hollow That's
- 8:51Speaker 1: what I'm based my answer. Does everybody have an answer?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Garrett saying Minnesota,
- 8:58Speaker 1: Maggie saying Missouri, Brody saying Kentucky, Krin saying Tennessee, Cal
- 9:02Speaker 1: saying Tennessee, Joannice saying Minnesota, and Dan saying Missouri. The
- 9:08Speaker 1: two states are Kentucky and Tennessee. Karin and Brody get
- 9:13Speaker 1: it right, and Cal and Cal well done. See. I
- 9:16Speaker 1: blamed Tony Peterson on that because he told me that
- 9:19Speaker 1: the best small mouth fishing is in Minnesota. He may
- 9:23Speaker 1: not be wrong, like you know down in the Holler
- 9:28Speaker 1: that the eleven pound fifteen ounce small he was caught
- 9:33Speaker 1: there by David Hayes in nineteen fifty five. The record
- 9:36Speaker 1: was controversial because Hayes wouldn't share which state and he
- 9:39Speaker 1: caught the fishing. There were also claims that the fish
- 9:42Speaker 1: was tampered with, and someone even came forward saying they
- 9:45Speaker 1: shoved boat motor parts down the fish's throat before it
- 9:48Speaker 1: was weighed. This caused the world record to be disqualified
- 9:51Speaker 1: in NINETI, but after a through investigation that included multiple polygraphs,
- 9:56Speaker 1: it was reinstated in two thousand five, and because still
- 10:00Speaker 1: wouldn't say what side of the lake he was on.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Both Kentucky and Tennessee list his small mouth as their
- 10:07Speaker 1: state records. There's a lot of gravy in that story.
- 10:11Speaker 1: The most specific he would go, which I think was
- 10:14Speaker 1: on his deathbed about a decade ago, he said it
- 10:16Speaker 1: was within five hundred feet of the state line. But
- 10:20Speaker 1: there's a lot of lake there within five feet. Question three,
- 10:24Speaker 1: we're onto cooking. Chipped meat, which is a gravy based
- 10:28Speaker 1: military meal, also goes by this vulgar name. Chipped meat,
- 10:37Speaker 1: which is a gravy based military meal, also goes by
- 10:41Speaker 1: this vulgar name. Some confident answers he down to. You
- 10:53Speaker 1: can't be given any hands right now. Everyone ever's done right.
- 10:57Speaker 1: But it says something about that small mouth. It wasn't like, oh,
- 11:01Speaker 1: they're putting lead shot in the fish right there, putting boats.
- 11:07Speaker 1: That's a big fish again. Chipped meat, which is a
- 11:11Speaker 1: gravy based military meal, also goes by this vulgar name.
- 11:18Speaker 1: We had cal Janis and Brodie, who know it. Rest
- 11:21Speaker 1: of the room not. It's confident. This is a great
- 11:24Speaker 1: duck hunters deal for eating geese. While you're shooting geese.
- 11:28Speaker 1: There you go I made it. I just don't know
- 11:31Speaker 1: what it is everybody having. The kids were spouting off
- 11:35Speaker 1: the other night at dinner about how we can say
- 11:38Speaker 1: this because this is the name of a food dish.
- 11:42Speaker 1: That's hilarious that that was a big time man writing down.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Does everybody else have an answer? If you didn't figure
- 11:50Speaker 1: out you're hint bron, I think go ahead and reveal
- 11:54Speaker 1: your answers. We have Garrett saying dogshit Maggy without an answer,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Brody saying ship on a shingle, Karin without an answer,
- 12:01Speaker 1: cal saying s O s or ship on a shingle,
- 12:04Speaker 1: Yanna saying ship on a shingle, and Dance saying ship
- 12:06Speaker 1: on a shingle. They got it right, it's shipped on
- 12:08Speaker 1: a shingle. Now, Dan, did that hint? You honestly out there?
- 12:12Speaker 1: Help you out a little bit. It just may have.
- 12:16Speaker 1: This is a common meal for all branches of the
- 12:18Speaker 1: armed forces because it's filling, quick, easy and cheap to make.
- 12:22Speaker 1: If you want to learn how to create it, then
- 12:24Speaker 1: go to the meat eater dot com and check out
- 12:25Speaker 1: Justin Townsend's recipe called venison ship on a shingle. It's
- 12:30Speaker 1: not real vulgar, I mean it's it's Uh, is it
- 12:36Speaker 1: as bad as it sounds? No, it's great. You know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I don't even know if they've ever had it. They
- 12:44Speaker 1: just know it exists, yeah, somehow. But it's basically like
- 12:47Speaker 1: biscuits and gravy. I'm sure they had a rendition of it. Yeah.
- 12:51Speaker 1: May you know, like your old like old style like
- 12:55Speaker 1: open face turkey sandwich with gravy on it. Yes, this
- 12:59Speaker 1: is just like a more reduced version of that. Think
- 13:03Speaker 1: and Justin's recipe has an egg on top, which I
- 13:06Speaker 1: had never seen before. Question for the topic is woodsmanship.
- 13:10Speaker 1: This is our listener question of the week, which was
- 13:12Speaker 1: won by James Standon for sending this great question. James
- 13:16Speaker 1: is going to get a set of meat Eater coasters
- 13:18Speaker 1: that were signed by everyone in the room. If you
- 13:20Speaker 1: want a chance to win the listener Question of the Week,
- 13:22Speaker 1: then send your question too. Trivia at the meat eater
- 13:25Speaker 1: dot com. Hey, real quick, I want to know when
- 13:27Speaker 1: these folks get these coasters to the email you and
- 13:31Speaker 1: say thanks, Spencer, these are great. Are they pretty fired
- 13:34Speaker 1: up about the signed coasters? Yeah? I think people are
- 13:37Speaker 1: genuinely excited. Uh, it is hard to keep up with
- 13:39Speaker 1: the trivia inbox. We get about two emails a week,
- 13:42Speaker 1: so we do get some feedback when folks get their prizes.
- 13:45Speaker 1: But I'm just gonna be honest with you, it probably
- 13:47Speaker 1: gets lost. The important thing is they got their problems.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Thank you? Gets lost? Yes. According to the c d C,
- 13:55Speaker 1: these two spiders with a color in their name are
- 13:57Speaker 1: the most venomous in America. What are they? You need
- 14:03Speaker 1: both both spiders? According to the c d C, these
- 14:08Speaker 1: two spiders with a color in their name are the
- 14:11Speaker 1: most venomous in America. What are they talk about that?
- 14:15Speaker 1: After this? What's up that little scar there? Oh you've
- 14:19Speaker 1: encountered one of these before? Maybe I encounter I don't
- 14:25Speaker 1: want to say too much. Okay again, looking for hundred
- 14:28Speaker 1: spider bites, boll of course the last eight days, looking
- 14:32Speaker 1: for both spiders. What were you doing in the last
- 14:34Speaker 1: eight chiggers? Spider right? Yeah, same family. I think they
- 14:40Speaker 1: got chickers in New Mexico. Yeah really yeah, every time
- 14:44Speaker 1: I've been down there getting nailed. You got it real
- 14:47Speaker 1: bad last year. Your belly's all covered up right now,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and just especially where like my hip belt, backpack straps,
- 14:54Speaker 1: land like it's just it's a real war zone down
- 14:57Speaker 1: there you chingers. Strike me is something you get in
- 15:00Speaker 1: like a very lush veget area, like get like Minnesota, Illinois.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's monsoon country, right, and they gets some of the
- 15:08Speaker 1: best grassland range land in the world. And yeah, trigger country.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Does everybody have two spiders written down? Go ahead and
- 15:19Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Garrett saying black widow and
- 15:22Speaker 1: brown recluse. Maggie saying black widow and brown recluse, and
- 15:25Speaker 1: she drew a great spider there with scary teeth. Brody
- 15:29Speaker 1: saying black widow and brown recluse. Karen black widow and
- 15:33Speaker 1: scarlet nothing, yellow scarlet Caw saying black widow, brown recluse.
- 15:38Speaker 1: The honest black widow, brown recluse. Dan got black widow,
- 15:41Speaker 1: but not the brown recluse. The two answers are black
- 15:44Speaker 1: widow and brown recluse. Black widows are found across the country,
- 15:48Speaker 1: while brown recluse are most common in the Midwest and South.
- 15:52Speaker 1: The CDC recommends you seek medical attention for either bite
- 15:56Speaker 1: as they are both highly toxic. Black widows kill about
- 15:58Speaker 1: six people each year, but brown recluse deaths are almost
- 16:02Speaker 1: unheard of. So you've you've encountered one of these Garrett.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Uh No, I looked it up recently, um, because I
- 16:09Speaker 1: thought maybe I didn't. But it sounds like there's a
- 16:12Speaker 1: lot of people that think to get bit by a
- 16:14Speaker 1: brown recluse, but it's actually a wolf spider. And uh
- 16:18Speaker 1: I got this on my goat hunt. And for three
- 16:21Speaker 1: days my hand was like twice as big as my
- 16:23Speaker 1: other hand. I got to the point I couldn't close
- 16:25Speaker 1: my hand over the weekend. Is that your trigger finger? Yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 1: but you didn't have I didn't have the ta and um.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So you know, the first day when it was all
- 16:35Speaker 1: swollen up, you're like, oh, whatever. The second day you're like, oh,
- 16:37Speaker 1: this could be something. By the third day, mn you
- 16:39Speaker 1: know on the internet, like anybody else would be, and
- 16:41Speaker 1: they're like, IF's a brown recluse, you'd get like a
- 16:44Speaker 1: hollow that it's like a blue hollow look to it,
- 16:46Speaker 1: because this everything's decaying underneath it. We had a trip
- 16:51Speaker 1: in the little Wood drainage they're outside of catchup, and
- 16:54Speaker 1: a buddy of mine got bit right on the butt
- 16:56Speaker 1: by a brown recluse. Yeah, so it was bad for him,
- 16:59Speaker 1: but it was also bad for everybody else because we
- 17:01Speaker 1: had several days of like, hey, can you look at
- 17:03Speaker 1: my butt? Did he sit on it? Yeah? By the
- 17:07Speaker 1: time we got out of there, it was, um I
- 17:11Speaker 1: mean it ate like a half a baseball size hole
- 17:16Speaker 1: in his Yeah. How's he doing a tissue that that
- 17:20Speaker 1: the dog had to scrape out? It hadn't like I'll
- 17:23Speaker 1: come out that way, but terrible. Yeah. Question five. The
- 17:27Speaker 1: topic is wildlife. Three states have a bison on their
- 17:32Speaker 1: state quarter name one of them. Three states have a
- 17:38Speaker 1: bison on their state quarter name one of those states.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Some quick answers in the room, Dan, did you know
- 17:47Speaker 1: this one? I think I do. Garrett, I don't know. Man.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You boys were fast to the draw on this question.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Three states have a bison on their state quarter name
- 17:59Speaker 1: one of them. Man, we will get a scoreboard update
- 18:04Speaker 1: from Phil after this. I was confident I might be wrong,
- 18:07Speaker 1: though I'm sticking to my gonzo. Does everybody have an answer?
- 18:13Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Garrett saying Wyoming,
- 18:16Speaker 1: Maggie sang South Dakota, Brody saying Oklahoma, Crant saying Iowa,
- 18:20Speaker 1: Cow saying North Dakota, Jana saying Oklahoma, and Dance saying Wyoming.
- 18:25Speaker 1: We have a correct answer in the room. The three
- 18:27Speaker 1: states are Kansas, North Dakota, and Montana. Bison are the
- 18:36Speaker 1: most popular animal on state quarters. North Dakotas shows to
- 18:40Speaker 1: bison grazing in the badlands, Montanas shows a bison skull
- 18:44Speaker 1: and has the phrase big sky state, and Kansas is
- 18:47Speaker 1: shows a bison standing near sunflowers. One of the funniest
- 18:51Speaker 1: and most collectible error coins is actually the two thousand
- 18:54Speaker 1: five edition of the Kansas Quarter. Instead of the quote
- 18:57Speaker 1: in God we trust, some versions say in God we
- 19:01Speaker 1: rust awesome. North Dakota State is bison right and that
- 19:07Speaker 1: there Yes, But but you have to say with a
- 19:10Speaker 1: Z they go bison. Oh really, Yeah, you look like
- 19:13Speaker 1: an outsider if you don't say bison instead of bison.
- 19:16Speaker 1: That's a good tip. Phil hit us with a scoreboard update.
- 19:18Speaker 1: We are halfway through the game of trivia. We are
- 19:21Speaker 1: we have every everybody's on the board, which is always
- 19:24Speaker 1: a fun thing. At halftime, we got Dan and Karen
- 19:27Speaker 1: with one point apiece, Maggie, Joannics and Garrett I'll have
- 19:30Speaker 1: two points, Brody with three, and pitching a perfect game
- 19:34Speaker 1: is Ryan Callahan with five points. Because jigger bites aren't
- 19:43Speaker 1: slowing you down. Question six This is a video question.
- 19:56Speaker 1: If you want to see what the room is seeing,
- 19:58Speaker 1: then go to my Instagram and check out at Spencer
- 20:00Speaker 1: New Hearth. I'll make it my most recent post. What
- 20:05Speaker 1: fishing Brand ran this iconic commercial in the late two
- 20:08Speaker 1: thousands to promote the durability of their rods, and just
- 20:12Speaker 1: so we don't give away the answer, Phil has bleeped
- 20:14Speaker 1: out the name of the company in the commercial. Brody
- 20:18Speaker 1: knows it without seeing the video. I might change, but
- 20:22Speaker 1: I don't think I'm gonna. I'm gonna. Yeah, you're right,
- 20:25Speaker 1: I think I know. I was so sick of him
- 20:27Speaker 1: fishing I ran over his own truck. Don't get me wrong.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I'm couldn't be happier that he found a hobby today.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I'm a peaceful person, so I gave it to our dogs,
- 20:42Speaker 1: Sugar Da. What is that thing made off? You know
- 20:47Speaker 1: what happened? Absolutely nothing? Nothing? Yeah, I'm not changing my answer. Man, Ah,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you want to see one more time you feel ok
- 20:57Speaker 1: about But I'll tell you what. These They are durable
- 21:01Speaker 1: man like I that I fully support them. My kids
- 21:04Speaker 1: cannot break them. A lot of hints out there. What
- 21:08Speaker 1: what's this? Say? The question again? What a brand ran
- 21:13Speaker 1: this iconic commercial in the late two thousands to promote
- 21:17Speaker 1: the durability of their rods. Your kids. Your kids maybe
- 21:23Speaker 1: more gentle than sam Baits. Is that right? Found a
- 21:27Speaker 1: way to break one? Does everybody have an answer? Go
- 21:33Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Garrett saying ugly stick, Karin,
- 21:37Speaker 1: or excuse me, Maggie saying bass Caster. He's saying ugly stick,
- 21:41Speaker 1: Karn without an answer, cal Jannis and Dan all saying
- 21:44Speaker 1: ugly stick. They got it right, The answer is ugly stick.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Or i'd also accept their parent company Shakespeare. Oh see,
- 21:51Speaker 1: that's what I was worried about. That. That's except ugly stick,
- 21:54Speaker 1: because that's not the brand technically, right, that's like a line. Well,
- 21:58Speaker 1: it's still a brand, right, But the parent company is Shakespeare.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Shakespeare created the world's first all graph fite rod in
- 22:06Speaker 1: ninety six. It was an engineering feat that caused the
- 22:09Speaker 1: brand to focus on the rods performance rather than cosmetics.
- 22:13Speaker 1: The marketing team asked the engineers to make the Rods prettier,
- 22:17Speaker 1: but when the engineers said that was a waste of
- 22:19Speaker 1: their time, the marketing team had no choice but to
- 22:21Speaker 1: lean into the rods bland appearance thus the ugly stick
- 22:25Speaker 1: was born. Question seven, the topic is hunting. This next
- 22:29Speaker 1: great question comes you as via Andrew Burkey. If you
- 22:32Speaker 1: have a question you think is right for Meat Eat Trivia,
- 22:35Speaker 1: you can send it to trivia at the meat eater
- 22:37Speaker 1: dot com. What color in the rainbow is most invisible
- 22:42Speaker 1: to white tails? What color in the rainbow is most
- 22:49Speaker 1: invisible to white tails? How does anybody actually know what
- 22:55Speaker 1: the answer is? Well, you can look at the rods
- 22:57Speaker 1: and the cones in their eyes and then simulate things
- 22:59Speaker 1: based um that this is an agreed upon answer. I
- 23:03Speaker 1: even checked with Jim Heffelfinger to make sure that this
- 23:05Speaker 1: science is still relevant because biologists have known about it
- 23:09Speaker 1: for a while. The most visible or most most invisible invisible?
- 23:15Speaker 1: Putting it is most invisible? Answer to that question, Cal,
- 23:19Speaker 1: But that's not the question. That's how I found that
- 23:22Speaker 1: these papers would phrase it was most invisible, so I
- 23:26Speaker 1: stuck with it. Yeah, it's a weird way to put it.
- 23:29Speaker 1: What color in the rainbow is most invisible to white tails?
- 23:33Speaker 1: Garrett is changing his answer, Cal still has the perfect
- 23:37Speaker 1: game going. How you feel about your answer here about
- 23:41Speaker 1: as strong as I feel about white tails? Do you
- 23:44Speaker 1: know all the colors in the rainbow. Oh yeah, that's
- 23:46Speaker 1: what I was gonna ask. What kind of rainbow we're
- 23:48Speaker 1: talking about here? Everybody have an answers, a double rain right,
- 23:53Speaker 1: go ahead and don't have one. Okay way for answers.
- 23:59Speaker 1: When you asked that question, Roy, there's a what if
- 24:05Speaker 1: you didn't know that? No? I know, I know, and
- 24:08Speaker 1: yet you still haven't written an answer. No I haven't.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I feel confident that with two small children can pick
- 24:14Speaker 1: a color. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 24:18Speaker 1: Garrett saying orange, Maggie saying red, Brody saying red, Crin
- 24:22Speaker 1: saying blue, cal saying red, Janna saying red, and Dance
- 24:26Speaker 1: saying red. They got it. The correct answer is red.
- 24:31Speaker 1: This is applicable to white tails across the continent, whether
- 24:34Speaker 1: you're hunting the suburbs of Washington, d c. Egg Country
- 24:38Speaker 1: in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, or the big woods of Alabama waterways.
- 24:42Speaker 1: These also all happened to be the places you can
- 24:44Speaker 1: watch Mark Kenyan hunt white tails and Meat Eater's newest
- 24:47Speaker 1: series called Deer Country. Right now, Spencer, are you gonna
- 24:51Speaker 1: explain some science to us or not? Nope? No, you
- 24:54Speaker 1: know it is is very busy, right, so I tried
- 25:01Speaker 1: to think of something opposite on the spectrum right. Question eight.
- 25:05Speaker 1: The topic is conservation. Three thousand of what New York
- 25:11Speaker 1: City icons were dumped in the Atlantic Ocean from two
- 25:14Speaker 1: thousand one to two thousand ten in an effort to
- 25:17Speaker 1: create artificial reefs? Three thousand of what New York City
- 25:24Speaker 1: icons were dumped in the Atlantic Ocean from two thousand
- 25:27Speaker 1: one to two thousand ten in an effort to create
- 25:30Speaker 1: artificial reefs. Maggie, you think you got this one? She
- 25:34Speaker 1: does one more time, Spencer, I don't know, but three
- 25:37Speaker 1: thousand of what New York City icons were dumped in
- 25:41Speaker 1: the Atlantic Ocean from two thousand one to two thousand
- 25:44Speaker 1: ten in an effort to create artificial reefs. This is
- 25:51Speaker 1: question eight. We will get a scoreboard update from Phil
- 25:54Speaker 1: after this. Man, this is just embarrassed. Ah, there's a
- 26:03Speaker 1: lot of New York City icons. Maggie knows it. Karin
- 26:06Speaker 1: seems like she knows it. Maybe on a brody in Janice,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I'm like the educated guess is all I got for you?
- 26:20Speaker 1: A less aqua related tribute next time? My mom, well,
- 26:25Speaker 1: you know, we did a whole gun episode for Garrett,
- 26:28Speaker 1: he did, and I failed miserably. Does everybody have an answer?
- 26:34Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Garrett saying lobsters,
- 26:38Speaker 1: Maggie saying yellow taxi cabs, Brodie saying taxicabs. Karan, I
- 26:42Speaker 1: cannot tell what you have written the Empire state building
- 26:45Speaker 1: statues saying parking meters, Janice saying taxis Dan saying statue
- 26:51Speaker 1: of liberty. Nobody got it. The correct answer is subway cars.
- 26:57Speaker 1: This was referred to as the sub way reef program.
- 27:01Speaker 1: The eighteen ton cars were stripped clean and then placed
- 27:04Speaker 1: off the coast of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, South
- 27:08Speaker 1: Carolina in Georgia. Today they're a flourishing habitat for sea
- 27:12Speaker 1: bass ton a, mackerel, muscles, barnacles, coral and more. Phil,
- 27:18Speaker 1: we have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update.
- 27:20Speaker 1: We do two questions left and only two players left
- 27:25Speaker 1: in the game. Those two players are Barody with five
- 27:28Speaker 1: points and Cow with a two point lead. He's got
- 27:31Speaker 1: seven points. Cal is right in line with the Shelby
- 27:36Speaker 1: index of nine. Here's still in there, buddy. Question ninety
- 27:41Speaker 1: topic is cooking this process, which is essentially the opposite
- 27:45Speaker 1: of dry aging, uses sealed bags to tenderize meat. This process,
- 27:53Speaker 1: which is essentially the opposite of dry aging, uses sealed
- 27:57Speaker 1: bags to tenderize meat. Some quick answers. Cal is keeping
- 28:03Speaker 1: his pace while Brody does some rewriting. No, I haven't
- 28:07Speaker 1: done any writing. Oh, no writing yet. He's balancing his
- 28:13Speaker 1: check book one more time. This process, which is essentially
- 28:17Speaker 1: the opposite of dry aging, uses sealed bags to tender
- 28:20Speaker 1: eye meat. Bro do you have an answer? I do,
- 28:27Speaker 1: but I think it's wrong because I can't think of
- 28:29Speaker 1: the Does everybody else have an answer? I feel like
- 28:32Speaker 1: my answer is too dumb. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 28:35Speaker 1: We had a Barrett saying wet aging, Maggie sang brining,
- 28:39Speaker 1: Brodie saying, Brian, and Karin saying suvied, Cal saying wet aging.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Yanni and Dan also saying wet aging. They got it.
- 28:47Speaker 1: It is wet aging. Wet Aging is a relatively new
- 28:51Speaker 1: technic that's become popular vacuum steelers and refrigerators. It's best
- 28:58Speaker 1: used on lean cuts of meat, like venison. If you
- 29:01Speaker 1: want to learn how to perfect this process, then go
- 29:03Speaker 1: to the meat eator dot com and read Danielle Pruitt's
- 29:05Speaker 1: article called how to wet age meat? Doesn't it basically
- 29:09Speaker 1: involve just taking a backseal bag out of the freezer
- 29:11Speaker 1: and letting it sitting here. But it's supposed to be
- 29:17Speaker 1: quicker than dry aging. I'll tell you right now, I
- 29:20Speaker 1: will never my My scientific run at dry aging for
- 29:26Speaker 1: any sort of positive result is over. Like I just
- 29:30Speaker 1: I don't get anything out of it. So how soon
- 29:33Speaker 1: are you butchering after you kill someunthing? I think a
- 29:37Speaker 1: week to ten days. But are you still doing some
- 29:40Speaker 1: wet aging or not. I'll like take a bunch of
- 29:43Speaker 1: meat out at the beginning of the week, and so
- 29:45Speaker 1: the stuff at the end of the week you could
- 29:47Speaker 1: say has been wet aging. Yeah, I do wet aging
- 29:49Speaker 1: by a product of not being super organized. It works. Well.
- 29:53Speaker 1: We know our winner is Cal, but Phil give us
- 29:55Speaker 1: one more scoreboard update before we do the final question. Yeah, Cal, Now,
- 29:59Speaker 1: how's a eight points? Bertie has five? Still, so um
- 30:04Speaker 1: do you want more than that? That's okay? Question topic
- 30:08Speaker 1: is wildlife. This next great question comes to you with
- 30:11Speaker 1: via Arran's Fatana. If you have a question you think
- 30:14Speaker 1: is right for meat eatter Trivia, send it to trivia
- 30:17Speaker 1: at the meat eater dot com. Three states have a
- 30:20Speaker 1: state bird that's native to another continent. What is that continent?
- 30:28Speaker 1: Three states have a state bird that's native to another continent?
- 30:33Speaker 1: What is that continent? Quick answer from Dan? You know
- 30:38Speaker 1: this one I thought I did the last time I
- 30:40Speaker 1: had a quick answer. It's a final question one more time.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Three states have a state bird that's not native to
- 30:48Speaker 1: North America. What continent are they native to? It's kind
- 30:52Speaker 1: of a blowout hoss answer three point when I'd identified
- 30:56Speaker 1: as that. Yeah, yeah, but the Shelby index is uh,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I'm supposed to. If I don't get this one, I'm
- 31:01Speaker 1: failing Shelby. Yeah. Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead
- 31:06Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Garrett saying Asia, Asia,
- 31:10Speaker 1: Brody saying South America, Kran saying Asia, Cal saying South America,
- 31:15Speaker 1: Janice saying Asia, and Dance saying Asia. Is that Greenland?
- 31:19Speaker 1: The correct answer is Asia. Those three states and state
- 31:24Speaker 1: birds are Delaware and the blue hen chicken Rhode Island
- 31:28Speaker 1: and the Rhode Island red chicken in South Dakota. And
- 31:31Speaker 1: the ringneck pheasants both chickens and ringneck pheasants are native
- 31:35Speaker 1: to East Asia. I was thinking, actual, yeah, Cal is
- 31:42Speaker 1: our winner? Good questions that was in question from Aaron's
- 31:48Speaker 1: cal is this your second victory? I am maybe, I
- 31:52Speaker 1: don't know. Well done, Cal, it is yes. And also
- 31:55Speaker 1: Janice pulled pulled a head into second place there at
- 31:57Speaker 1: the talking about that doesn't get any Garrett. Let's see
- 32:07Speaker 1: Dan and Garrett were tied with five points. You should
- 32:11Speaker 1: ask him the tiebreaker questions. Then we're to save the tiebreaker.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Not easy to come up with you. Honestly, you don't
- 32:17Speaker 1: get anything for second place, but Cal gets to choose
- 32:20Speaker 1: where the five donation goes for getting eight correct and
- 32:24Speaker 1: winning this episode of Media to Trivia. I'm gonna say
- 32:27Speaker 1: Montana b h a who's currently intervening in a lawsuit
- 32:33Speaker 1: between United Property Owners of Montana and Montana Fishing Game.
- 32:38Speaker 1: United Property Owners of Montana claims that it's unconstitutional for
- 32:42Speaker 1: Montana Fishing Game to manage elk Aw the resource, and
- 32:46Speaker 1: they're trying to get them to eradicate elk in any
- 32:51Speaker 1: unit that's over objective right now? And what direction is
- 32:55Speaker 1: that trending right now? Well, the judge just granted the
- 32:59Speaker 1: intervention or intervening status here last week. Um, so it's weird.
- 33:06Speaker 1: We'll see, we'll see. It would be hard to imagine
- 33:09Speaker 1: that the interest in the state would let it go
- 33:13Speaker 1: that way, but we're definitely in a interesting time in
- 33:16Speaker 1: regards to management. So by helping b h A, you're
- 33:19Speaker 1: helping that battle with the five donation well donors. That's right, Dan,
- 33:25Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us. Hope you had fun. Join
- 33:28Speaker 1: us next time for more Meat Eater Trivia, the only
- 33:30Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins.
