- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am Tracie Foster.
- 0:03I am going to be your host for Fostering Faith
- 0:05for this episode. And I was inspired by this
- 0:07episode by watching a sermon while I was giving
- 0:10my dog a haircut. It was about worship. And in
- 0:14this episode, I think that we're going to go
- 0:16deep and just really try to maybe have you think
- 0:21of worship in a different light and inspire you
- 0:24and allow you to go to God and draw closer. whenever
- 0:29you are in worship. And so this episode is Worship
- 0:32a Cleansed Heart on Fire. And so, hey friends,
- 0:35welcome back to Fostering Faith. If you don't
- 0:38want to have watered down Christianity, stay
- 0:42tuned. And so we are going to not settle for
- 0:45watered down Christianity. We're going to dive
- 0:47deep. We're going to go hard and we're going
- 0:48to go after God with everything that is in us.
- 0:51Today, we're talking about something that is
- 0:52foundational, transformational, and absolutely
- 0:55essential to living a life on fire for Jesus.
- 0:59And we're diving into worship, what it is, why
- 1:03we were made for it, and how cleansing your heart
- 1:06before you worship is not optional. It's the
- 1:10whole point. So buckle up because we're going
- 1:12to be fierce this episode. It's going to get
- 1:16a little fiery and it's going to be one of those
- 1:18episodes where you might find yourself weeping,
- 1:21worshiping, or both because worship changes everything
- 1:25when it's done with a clean mind. surrendered
- 1:28heart. And so we were made for worship. So let's
- 1:32start with the truth. You were created for worship,
- 1:35period. Not maybe, not sometimes. You were wired
- 1:40down to your deepest part of your being, not
- 1:44to respond to something with reverence, awe,
- 1:47and surrender. Worship is not something Christians
- 1:49do. It's what humans do. John Piper said, missions...
- 1:57exist because worship doesn't. Doesn't that hit
- 2:01hard? That means worship is the end goal because
- 2:05when we finally behold God for who he is, our
- 2:08natural response will be to fall down in worship.
- 2:13Psalms 95, six says that come all us bow down
- 2:16in worship. Let us kneel before the Lord, our
- 2:19maker. Worship is not hype. It is not a genre.
- 2:26It's not three slow songs after the announcements.
- 2:29Worship is what happens when your soul recognizes
- 2:33the magnitude of our God. And Hebrews even had
- 2:40a word for worship, which means bow down to prostrate
- 2:44yourself in reverence. It's an act of lowering
- 2:47yourself because you see the greatness of someone
- 2:50else. It's humility in action. It's surrender.
- 2:53It's not entertainment. It's an exchange. And
- 2:59so worship requires a clean heart. Now, let's
- 3:04get real. You can't worship rightly with a filthy
- 3:09heart. God sees through your lip service. He
- 3:13sees straight through your raised hands if your
- 3:16heart is still holding on to pride and bitterness
- 3:18or your secret sin. Ugh, I know. I know that
- 3:23hurts. And I've been there and I have done it.
- 3:28And we're all here to help each other grow. We
- 3:32have Psalm 24, 3 -4 that says, Who may ascend
- 3:36the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his
- 3:39holy place? The one who has clean hands and a
- 3:43pure heart. Do you want to experience deep, authentic
- 3:47worship? Then you may need to come with a clean
- 3:51heart. Charles Spurgeon once preached, God will
- 3:55not accept the sacrifice of a praise from unclean
- 3:59lips unless the heart is washed first in the
- 4:02blood of Christ. That's not old school. That's
- 4:06truth. And let me be clear. This isn't about
- 4:09being perfect. Let me say that again for the
- 4:14people that are in the back. It's not about being
- 4:17perfect. It's about posture. It's about saying,
- 4:23God, I messed up this week, but I'm here to lay
- 4:27it all down. Purify me. Clean me out. I want
- 4:32nothing between us. And you have Jesus in Matthew
- 4:3815, 8 that says, these people honor me with their
- 4:40lips, but their hearts are far from me. Let that
- 4:44never be us. Having a chance of repentance is
- 4:49such an honor. It's such an honor to go in front
- 4:52of our Lord and say, you know what? I have screwed
- 4:54up. I've messed up. I followed my fleshly desire.
- 4:57I followed kingdom. I did not follow kingdom
- 4:59standard. I followed what earthly people are
- 5:02doing. And I'm sorry. Let me walk and let me
- 5:06turn. Let me turn from this. And so the science
- 5:10of worship changes you. Okay, so let's be a nerd
- 5:13for a second. And there's actual studies showing
- 5:17how worship affects the brain and the heart.
- 5:19One study from the University of Pennsylvania
- 5:22used brain scans during spiritual practices and
- 5:27found that worship reduces the activity of the
- 5:29parietal lobe, the part of your brain that gives
- 5:32you a sense of self. So what does that really
- 5:34mean? And so translation, in worship, your sense
- 5:38of ego fades and your awareness of God increases.
- 5:43And another study showed in the evangelical journal
- 5:46of psychology showed that the consistent worship
- 5:49reduces symptoms of anxiety, depression, and
- 5:53stress. It increases your joy and emotional regulation.
- 5:57It's like heaven designed worship, not just for
- 6:01God's glory, but for our healing. It's like whenever
- 6:05you lift your hands, your brain is rewiring.
- 6:08Whenever you sing truth, Your mind is renewed.
- 6:12You have metanoia. When you focus on God instead
- 6:16of your problems, peace just floods in. And I'm
- 6:21studying Romans right now. And Romans 12, one
- 6:23through two says, and this hits hard, so just
- 6:26pay attention. Offer your bodies as living sacrifices,
- 6:30holy and pleasing to God. This is our true and
- 6:33proper worship. Do not conform. to the pattern
- 6:40of this world, but be transformed by the renewing
- 6:43of your mind. Worship literally rewires your
- 6:47mind whenever you do it with a surrendered heart
- 6:50and your hands are lifted and you are weeping
- 6:53because you were in the presence of the almighty
- 6:55God. And worship is wonderful and heartfelt,
- 7:01but it is warfare. You ever wonder why the enemy
- 7:09attacks you when you're in the hardest, whenever
- 7:12it's time to worship? Because worship is warfare.
- 7:16Whenever you worship, you are dethroning your
- 7:19fear, your ego, your shame, and you're enthroning
- 7:23the king of kings. 2 Chronicles 20 says, give
- 7:29us one of the wildest battle strategies in scripture.
- 7:33And so when the King Jehoshaphat was facing three
- 7:36massive armies, he didn't send warriors out first.
- 7:40He sent worshipers. And what happened? God confused
- 7:46the enemies and they destroyed themselves. That's
- 7:50not cute. That's strategic. Worship shifts the
- 7:54atmosphere. When you lift Jesus high, demons
- 7:59have to flee. When you worship, And your heart
- 8:05is clean and it carries weight. It's pure. It's
- 8:09powerful. And so as we go in, how do we clean
- 8:13our heart before worship? Okay, so let's get
- 8:15practical. And so how do we cleanse our heart
- 8:18before worship? Not just in the moment, but maybe
- 8:22as a lifestyle. And so what are we doing to have
- 8:25a clean lifestyle? One, repent daily. Don't carry
- 8:32yesterday's sins into today's worship. Keep short
- 8:36accounts with God. Check with him daily, hourly
- 8:40if you have to. Some days I am repenting a lot,
- 8:45a lot, every hour, every 10 minutes. And it's
- 8:49just like, oh, that was not a good thought. That
- 8:51was not a good thought. I didn't say that thought,
- 8:52but it was still, I'm trying to capture those
- 8:54thoughts before they come and go. And so Psalm
- 8:5751. 10 says, create in me a clean heart, oh God,
- 9:01and renew the right spirit with me. And so please
- 9:05know that that is such a dangerous Psalm because
- 9:09he will really clean your heart. He will let
- 9:12you know that there's pride. He will let you
- 9:13know that there's envy. He will let you know
- 9:15of the bitterness that is in there. He will wring
- 9:17out your heart. And so please know whenever you
- 9:20are asking God for these, what seemed to be like,
- 9:23oh, like very aesthetic or, you know, whatever
- 9:27word is all over Instagram and TikTok that I
- 9:30have no idea, but creating me a clean heart,
- 9:33please be ready for him to show you what he actually
- 9:36sees, not what you've been, the things that you've
- 9:38been trying to hide from him. So cleaning me,
- 9:40creating me a clean heart, he will bring out
- 9:43pride. He will bring out sin. He will bring out
- 9:45the things that you have not even told your best
- 9:48friend and he will reign those out. And so just
- 9:51please be prepared. Number two, forgive quickly.
- 9:56Matthew 5, 23, 4 says, if you're about to worship
- 9:59and remember someone has something against you,
- 10:02go make it right. Worship isn't worship if you
- 10:06are harboring offense. And so I forgive quickly
- 10:10because who am I? Who am I not to forgive? Who
- 10:14am I to hold a grudge if my God has not stroked
- 10:18me dead because of all the things that I have
- 10:20done to him and all the honoriness that I have?
- 10:23Who am I? Who am I? Who am I not to forgive someone?
- 10:27I mean, and just be like, you know what? You
- 10:29may not even know any better. I do know better
- 10:32because I've known scripture. I am trying to
- 10:35just be more like Christ. I know better. I know
- 10:39that I'm supposed to forgive. And so therefore
- 10:41I do. If he forgives me, I forgive you. I mean,
- 10:45that's his bottom line. I mean, and the things
- 10:47that we are, that he does to us, we are to emulate
- 10:50to others. And so we can show them what Christ
- 10:53is like. And people can be saying, how would
- 10:56you forgive that? Because Christ forgave me.
- 11:00Because that's what he said to do. And so that's
- 11:03what I'm going to do. Three, come in low. Humility
- 11:08isn't weakness. It's the door to God's presence.
- 11:12Isaiah 57, 15 says, God dwells within the contrite
- 11:17and lonely in spirit. Humility isn't weakness.
- 11:20It is bowing. And knowing that you are serving
- 11:24the Lord of Lords. And we come humbly before
- 11:28his throne. And we often talk about meekness.
- 11:32And so that is strength under control. That is
- 11:35knowing that I can crush you. I can just do all
- 11:37the things, but I'm not. I come humbly before
- 11:40it. It's not weakness. It's meekness. Four, fix
- 11:46your eyes. Tell your eyes that it's not going
- 11:50to be on your phone. your problems, your image,
- 11:53look up. Psalm 121 says, one through two, I lift
- 11:58my eyes to the hills. Where does my Lord come
- 12:02from? My help comes from the Lord. And so I have
- 12:07a sign that's in my office that says, when in
- 12:09doubt, look up. And then so when in doubt, look
- 12:12up. When in trouble, look up. When in, when in
- 12:15just. In confusion, look up, fix your eyes. And
- 12:19I often, I pray that almost every day is fix
- 12:22my eyes on you. Take your hands on my face and
- 12:25just keep them on you because it's so important
- 12:30because we want to turn to the left. We want
- 12:32to turn to the right. We want to see what everybody
- 12:33else is doing and we don't fix our focus on him.
- 12:38And so worship can change the room. Worship doesn't
- 12:42just change you. It changes the room. One woman
- 12:46in the back of the row singing with a clean heart
- 12:49and fiery faith can shift the entire sanctuary.
- 12:53One high schooler in the lunchroom humming a
- 12:56worship instead of gossiping can change the atmosphere.
- 13:00Your worship isn't about volume. It's about verity.
- 13:05It's about truth. You can't fake it. It's the
- 13:10power of purity. And so Jesus told women at the
- 13:15well in John 4, 23, the father is seeking worshipers
- 13:18who will worship in spirit and in truth. He's
- 13:23not looking for the best vocals. He's looking
- 13:26for the cleanest heart. And so know also whenever
- 13:29you are in worship and you're in church, please
- 13:32know that it does not matter who is sitting beside
- 13:34you. It does not matter who is in front of you
- 13:36nor in back of you. That is your time between
- 13:39you and God. Sing. to your bestest ability, seeing
- 13:44to your heart desires, seeing with your hands
- 13:47lifted and do not be afraid. Do not just, just
- 13:50be so excited to just be in his presence. And
- 13:54I mean, sometimes you are so excited to be there
- 13:57and your hands can't even lift high enough. Like
- 13:59you just feel like you're just, you want to be
- 14:00stretched armstrong and just lift your hands
- 14:02and just lift your hands and just know that you
- 14:06are in the presence of the almighty God. And
- 14:09he is not looking for an opera singer or the
- 14:12best person that has a vocalist. You are a child
- 14:15of God for those that follow him, that has accepted
- 14:17Jesus as their Lord and savior. He loves your
- 14:21voice. He loves my squeaky voice. He loves the
- 14:24fact that I think I can carry a tune. And my
- 14:26mom always used to tell me that I couldn't carry
- 14:28a tune in a metal bucket. But that doesn't stop
- 14:31me. And that's why I teach my kids too, because
- 14:33I teach junior hires and they are embarrassed.
- 14:36And how cringy is that? And oh my gosh. No, no,
- 14:40it's not about that. It's about your connection.
- 14:43It's about your connection with your God. And
- 14:47so final fire, you were made for this. And so
- 14:51let me leave you with this. You were made to
- 14:54worship, not to hustle for worth, not to impress
- 14:58people. You were made to carry the glory of God
- 15:01on your lips and in your life. That's why nothing
- 15:06else satisfies. So stop settling for shallow
- 15:10worship. Stop hiding in the back, hoping that
- 15:13no one sees you. Stop singing lyrics you don't
- 15:16live out. Worship like heaven is real. Worship
- 15:22like God sees you because he does. He sees you.
- 15:26He sees with your hands in your pockets. He sees
- 15:28you with your hands down. He sees you like texting
- 15:31in the middle of it. He sees all of that. And
- 15:35if your heart's been heavy, If you've been carrying
- 15:39stuff that's clogging up your worship, it's time
- 15:43to lay it down. Today, right now, God doesn't
- 15:46want a perfect song. He wants a cleansed heart,
- 15:50a surrendered life. That's worship. That's power.
- 15:55That's revival. And I also heard it of how to
- 16:02spread the message. And so you have a house and
- 16:06then your house is... that your neighbor's house
- 16:09is on fire. And Candace Cameron talked about
- 16:14this on one of her podcasts. And it was about,
- 16:17she's, you know, a house is on fire and you're
- 16:19just, you're just knocking, knocking. So three
- 16:21o 'clock in the morning. And the guy is just
- 16:23like, you're super annoyed. And he just keep
- 16:25knocking and knocking and knocking. And then
- 16:26finally he gets out and he's like, what is it?
- 16:29What is it? And he's like, your house is on fire.
- 16:31And so he runs out of the house. And so it's
- 16:33like, that is how. we as Christians should be
- 16:37spreading the gospel, should be spreading the
- 16:39news is that we're knocking and knocking and
- 16:41knocking because if we don't, what's going to
- 16:43happen to those people? They're going to die.
- 16:47They're going to be caught in the fire. And so
- 16:50I know this episode was maybe a little intense.
- 16:54I told you that we were going deep. I told you
- 16:55that we were going fierce. I told you that it
- 16:57was going to be on fire. If this episode lit
- 17:00a flame into you, share it with somebody that
- 17:02needs it. And before you go, Take a moment right
- 17:06now and just worship. Turn off this podcast,
- 17:10lift your hands to him. And that's where all
- 17:13the changes start. And so I would love to pray
- 17:16for you. And so dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 17:19so much for today. Thank you so much for yesterday.
- 17:22Thank you for these listeners. Thank you that
- 17:23the chains are falling off. Thank you that they
- 17:25were coming to you with repentance. Thank you
- 17:27that you were cleansing their hearts. Thank you
- 17:29that they are coming to you with things that
- 17:30they never have told anybody before. Thank you
- 17:32that you are allowing them to have a chance of
- 17:35repentance. Thank you for metanoia. Thank you
- 17:36that you were renewing their mind. Thank you
- 17:38that they have embraced the fact that they need
- 17:41a cleansed heart. Thank you that they have surrendered
- 17:44their life to you. Thank you for a fresh week.
- 17:47Thank you for a fresh mind. Thank you for all
- 17:49that you're doing in our lives. Thank you for
- 17:51never giving up on us. Thank you for your grace.
- 17:52Thank you for your mercy. Thank you for all that
- 17:54you do. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen and amen.
- 17:59And so thank you so much for tuning in. I will
- 18:01see you next week on Fostering Faith. Until then,
- 18:04clean your heart, lift your hands, and stay on
- 18:07fire. Have a great week, guys. We love you. Bye.
