Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to a special edition of Inside the Birds.
- 0:12It's Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan and surprised the Eagles
- 0:15in the middle of the night, late at night on
- 0:18Monday night, they.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Execute a trade with the Raiders.
- 0:21Speaker 1: They send Thomas Booker, the fourth defensive tackle, over to
- 0:25the Raiders for a cornerback, Jacoryan Bennett.
- 0:28Speaker 2: So a very rare early camp trade that we see.
- 0:33Speaker 1: But Adam, we both have looked into this and we
- 0:36have some really good intel that we want to share
- 0:39with our readers. So why don't we get started with
- 0:41some of the obvious stuff. First, the Jaquorian Bennett is
- 0:45a corner it's his third year. He was a fourth
- 0:47round pick in twenty twenty three out of Maryland. And
- 0:50of course Booker is a guy who made the team
- 0:53last year for the Eagles, had a really impressive camp.
- 0:56I thought he was doing well in camp, but the
- 0:58Eagles definitely had more young DT's on the rise, and
- 1:02so it was gonna be harder for him to make it.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And we'll talk about some of the developments there.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But as you look at this trade, this is one
- 1:09of those trades where you know the Eagles are looking
- 1:12at corner. The Raiders are clearly looking at DT and
- 1:15they're able to make something work out here, and the
- 1:19feats and the futures of these players is unknown. This
- 1:21is not like a starter for starter trade, but opportunity
- 1:24for each a new spot.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Actually, Booker probably would have made the team, I mean,
- 1:29not lock, but because you remember he was essentially the
- 1:33backup nose tackle, and that's something we'll stay on the
- 1:35Eagles first and we'll get to the Raiders. So it's
- 1:39it says a lot about ty Robinson though. Ty Robinson's
- 1:41the guy that they want to play a lot. You know,
- 1:43he's not a nose tackle. Yes, he puts a weight
- 1:46on his frame, but that's not the scouting report. The
- 1:48scouting report on ty Robinson was he was a tweener.
- 1:51He's not a forty three n He's not.
- 1:54Speaker 2: He's not.
- 1:55Speaker 3: He's more of a like a three or five technique
- 1:58and you can move them around a little bit, but
- 1:59he's really not knows unless unless you use them a
- 2:01certain way. So that's something they're gonna have to look at.
- 2:04I mean, we know we've talked about Gabe Hall. We
- 2:05talked about himfore training camp started in a decent offseason.
- 2:08He's got great length, but he's different. He's longer than
- 2:11Ty Robinson and Barron Young has this minor injury. But
- 2:14Byron Young is a guy that for a Raider ironically,
- 2:17who they're taking a look at. And then they signed
- 2:19and I don't I don't know if this had anything
- 2:21to do with it. But last week they signed two
- 2:23street free agent young players, Jacob Sykes and Joe Evans,
- 2:27who we saw a training camp. Maybe they knew that
- 2:29they were, maybe they knew the Raiders. Maybe they were
- 2:31talking to John Spytech before this for the trade. How
- 2:34he was They know each other, used to work with
- 2:36each other. Maybe this was on how he's mine to
- 2:38bring some developmental players in here. But from an eagle standpoint,
- 2:42it's Ty Robinson number ninety five. I was very explosive
- 2:46by the way that that's his deal. He it's he's
- 2:50right now to me, he's got to be the first
- 2:51guy off a badge.
- 2:55Speaker 2: We'll see, we'll see.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Because Vic said he's swimming a little bit, I think
- 2:59you're right that, I mean, you are right, Yeah, well
- 3:03not at all. I mean, as I would say.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Gabe's not swimming. He knows the defense having played in
- 3:11a year. You're right in that this is good for
- 3:16Ty Robinson. They do plan to play him. He is
- 3:18a rookie, has a lot, but from a roster spot
- 3:20and making the team standpoint, it's better for Gabe Hall.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And it's really shows from what I understand.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Uh and you had talked about this even coming out
- 3:27of OTAs, that Gabe was really starting to get it
- 3:30in the defense.
- 3:30Speaker 2: We knew he was a very good athlete.
- 3:32Speaker 1: We knew he needed a year of people getting on him,
- 3:35coaching him and coaching him into what he needed to be.
- 3:38And they started to see that in OTAs and they're
- 3:41seeing it continue in training camp, which is why I
- 3:44thought Booker, Yes, I agree. If Booker had made it,
- 3:47it would have been I believe both of them.
- 3:49Speaker 2: They just would have went deeper at d T.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But now you look and you've got Jayalen Carter, you
- 3:54have Jordan Davis, you have Moro Jomo, you have your
- 3:57rookie Ty Robinson and Gabe Hall.
- 3:59Speaker 2: That that's should be enough. We've talked about how they've.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Gone heavier at times when they had like young developmental
- 4:05tackles and maybe young come on doesn't mean they can't
- 4:09keep more. But I think that is your your steady
- 4:12five at the moment right now at DT, and that's
- 4:15pretty good. They continue to be young at this position
- 4:18and developmental well.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Halden played last year and I know Vic talked about
- 4:23the injury and that's fine come out of Baylor. But
- 4:24the reason why he wasn't drafted it was because there's
- 4:27their knocks on competitiveness, bring on energy to every practice
- 4:31because he's got like elite length yep playing to play
- 4:36the thirty four. You know, he he's got that, but
- 4:40it's it's going to amply himself. No, so far, so good.
- 4:43He's got he's got to show up. It's not a
- 4:45lock he makes a team. He's got to show up.
- 4:46He's got to continue to show up. He's a developmental
- 4:49player who's done nothing in the NFL yet, but he's
- 4:51got what you can't teach, that's elite length. And they
- 4:55gave him a good coin last year, a practice guad guarantee.
- 4:58So this guy's just got to bring it. And what's funny,
- 5:01by the way, before we move on here, we got
- 5:03a little bit more to We'll talk about Bennett. We
- 5:05got a lot on him. What's funny is Bennett and
- 5:09Booker making the same exact cash, like literally dollar for
- 5:12dollars one point oh three million. It's and none of
- 5:15us guaranteed, by the way, Bennetts and year three right,
- 5:18and a Booker's on year two of his two year
- 5:21deal that he recently he signed with Eagles in twenty four.
- 5:24So it's just kind of funny how that works out.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it almost feels like an NBA trade where you
- 5:28had to make the salaries match too, along with.
- 5:30Speaker 2: The tap of a matter.
- 5:31Speaker 3: That's not why they did it, but yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Here I know interestingly, you know, Booker only played sixteen
- 5:37percent of the defensive snaps last year, so I mean
- 5:39we could look good though he But my point is,
- 5:43you know, we don't make too much of it because
- 5:46whether it's Gabe Hall, whether it's whether it's tyrou who know.
- 5:49I mean, the main three guys in the rotation will
- 5:52start the year, will be Jordan Davis, will be Jalen Carter,
- 5:56and we'll be Moro Jomo, and then everyone else will
- 5:58be kind of mixed in based on how they're practicing
- 6:01and how.
- 6:01Speaker 2: They're playing on that.
- 6:03Speaker 3: By the way, the rest of the preseason games, the
- 6:05wrest of training camp will determine whether they add a
- 6:07veteran because you know last year they didn't have a veteran
- 6:10a d tackle, which is they were the only NFL
- 6:12team to do that, right Howe Hall, Robinson, those two
- 6:17in particular, and Barron Young. Barron Young will see now
- 6:22he was obviously a third round pick and when he
- 6:25was drafted they thought pretty highly of him a couple
- 6:27of years ago. But he's now an Eagle, So I
- 6:30think d tackle in these in preseason game is something
- 6:34to watch. I don't know that Byron Young plays because
- 6:37he's a minor entry, but Gabe Hall has got to
- 6:39show up.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And for the Raiders, you know, they went through that
- 6:43whole ordeal, really weird old deal with Christian Wilkins and
- 6:45injury in the contract. So people may not remember this,
- 6:49but even though Booker is only about three one hundred
- 6:51and three h five ish, he's he was the backup
- 6:55nose tackle for the Eagles. They just felt like he
- 6:57had the right technique and fundamentals to be able to
- 6:59do that if in the case of Jordan Davis getting
- 7:02hurt or not being available, so perhaps he can.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Go over to the Raiders and be versatile for them
- 7:07and help make up for the loss of Christian Wilkins.
- 7:10They clearly needed a dtackle.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But uh, but man, without Wilkins, it's Adam Butler, who's
- 7:15who knows the system. Patrick Graham is still there. But
- 7:20to be honest with you, when you when you look
- 7:22at when you look at the situation for them, they're
- 7:26incredibly light at d tackle. Tyree Wilson, the first round
- 7:29for two years ago, is gonna play. They're gonna line
- 7:31him up everywhere. He'll play inside'll play outside. They got
- 7:34a bunch of street free agents bus plus JJ Peggeez
- 7:37who was at draftee this year. So they're super light
- 7:40at d tackle, right, So yeah, they needed to add
- 7:42somebody in Booker Wabert Chansky. Not only do they have
- 7:45a good chance to make it, he can get in
- 7:47the rotation pretty quickly there, Oh, I.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Would think so definitely, definitely.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Like you said, he was also having another good camp,
- 7:53all right, So let's flip it now the Raiders.
- 7:56Speaker 2: This is different. It's not like the Raiders are blessed
- 7:58with great cornerback talent.
- 7:59Speaker 1: But you and I both know when you have a
- 8:01new coach who has a template of the type of
- 8:04player that he likes, whether it's offense or defense.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That means some guys just may not fit the mold.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Remember when we joked about Eric Rowe getting traded because
- 8:13he wasn't Jim Schwartz's you know, favorite guy out a
- 8:16year or two.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He didn't quote unquote fit the mold. But you know,
- 8:19we know Caroll likes the tall, longer corners.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You saw what he did with the Legion boom in
- 8:23Seattle and Ja Cory and Bennett has some really good athleticism,
- 8:27but he is a short court.
- 8:29Speaker 2: He's about five to eleven on a good day.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Five ten and a half at the combine. And I
- 8:35think you had this note last year like Fangio, and
- 8:38I know Jonathan Gannon was the same way Fangio. If
- 8:41I remember what you said that didn't have a size requirement, Yes, yeah,
- 8:45I do remember.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Actually it was Gannon, but Fanjo I thought it was
- 8:50a couple of years ago where Gannon told the staff
- 8:53that he just wanted good players and didn't really have
- 8:55the same Okay, okay, yeah, but I think I think
- 8:58if you look through Fangio's or two, he likes a
- 9:01certain kind of safety, but his corners have always varied.
- 9:04Speaker 2: You know, he's got he's had twelve physical ones, he's
- 9:06had shorter ones.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So yeah, and again this is not necessarily a guy
- 9:09who's going to come in and start, So I think
- 9:11you're just looking for talent at that position.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Right, So here's the book on Jacareine Bennett. High Ris
- 9:20score relative athletic score. We've talked about that nine five nine,
- 9:24that's a really high number that you know, the Eagles
- 9:28are big on that. Now he's five ten and five
- 9:29as at the combine, So arms are arms weren't terribly short,
- 9:34by the way, they were around thirty one, a little
- 9:36bit over thirty one. That's not bad terrible for a
- 9:38corner combine though. Speed forty four to three forty point five,
- 9:43broad jump eleven point one, ten yards split really good
- 9:46at one four nine. So the left leg numbers are tremendous. Now,
- 9:50he did admit to the media back in June that
- 9:54he had lab laboram surgery.
- 9:57Speaker 2: But he's fine.
- 9:57Speaker 3: He was in training camp healthy, he was running with
- 9:59the twos. He was definitely not gonna start. It's gonna
- 10:01be Eric Stokes and Darian Porter, speaking of tall corners
- 10:04of Ohiowa State. Now last year's numbers he was playing.
- 10:10I guess he said his shoulders were not great and
- 10:12they just isn't his best interest to have surgery before
- 10:15he got shut down. For the rest of the season,
- 10:17he was targeted forty four times, only completed against him
- 10:20twenty three times, so that's not bad. He started seven
- 10:23other ten games he was healthy for, so there's very
- 10:26good talent here. He's shorter than you'd like. The scout
- 10:30that I talked to who did his area said long term,
- 10:34probably would be a nickel. You would see him as
- 10:36a nickel, but man, he's super smart, coachable, tough, very
- 10:41aggressive and twitchy.
- 10:44Speaker 2: So that's funny because I know you spoke. You got
- 10:46a scouting report.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I got a scouting report too, and I love it
- 10:50when we both get talk to different people, but it
- 10:53matches up because the way this person described Jagorians to
- 10:58me was sort of like a shorter version of Ringo,
- 11:01which is he said he's a good athlete, but he
- 11:03can be aggressive, he can be a little handsy, and
- 11:06for being such a great athlete, he's a little bit
- 11:08tight hip, which we've.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Talked about with Quillia.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Ringo not not the most fluid mover at that position, because.
- 11:15Speaker 2: You can imagine Adam if he tested that way and was.
- 11:18Speaker 1: A fluid remove mover and wasn't aggressive, he probably would
- 11:21have been a first round pick with.
- 11:22Speaker 2: That kind of athletic testing.
- 11:24Speaker 1: But he's got some deficiencies to his game. He'll come in,
- 11:27he'll be able to compete. And the good thing for
- 11:29it to Kurian is Adam. I mean, clearly Vic Fangio
- 11:32and Howie Roseman and the powers that be want to
- 11:35They're clearly not sold yet on what they have opposite of,
- 11:40opposite of Quinia Mitchell. So throw another body in the
- 11:43mix and see if something works out.
- 11:45Speaker 3: And by the way, the free agent listed corners really
- 11:49been picked picked on over the last couple of weeks. Yeah,
- 11:52the Santi Samuel Junior, who would be a starter wherever
- 11:55he goes. He would compete, He would The belief is
- 11:58he would be signed to be a starter wherever he goes.
- 11:59He's got to get cleared of Medicley.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And Kennel Fuller. He still could play. He played for Vic.
- 12:04Speaker 3: The Dolphins caught him, but he played for vict two
- 12:06years ago in Miami, so he would know the system.
- 12:08Then Rasul Douglas is on the next wrong, that's pretty
- 12:11much it now because he goes have thirteen draft picks
- 12:14for next year. Look, if they're not happy now, now
- 12:19the timing is interesting. They did this instead of waiting
- 12:21until the end of the month, for the first week September.
- 12:23How he did a smart thing. If you're gonna do this,
- 12:25do it now, don't wait.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yep.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And he brought him in now. And Bennett's got a
- 12:29chance to compete for a pretty good job here. It's
- 12:32it's it's kind of open here. Who's going to start.
- 12:35I mean, we'll see what happens with Bennett. And he
- 12:37says he's healthy, and he asked. He wasn't on He
- 12:39didn't start on the list for training camp. So we'll
- 12:42see what happens. But they don't forget folks, if they're
- 12:45not happy. Now he's not happy. Vic's not happy. You
- 12:48got a lot of draft picks for next year to
- 12:49trade for him?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, this isn't the move.
- 12:51Speaker 1: If they're not happy, This is a move to just
- 12:54give you some death of competition. This is a guy
- 12:56who's got to play in the preseason games. They got
- 12:58to evaluate him, They got to see how it goes
- 13:00so looking forward to seeing that.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But I agree with your point.
- 13:03Speaker 1: If you're going to compare, if you're going to make
- 13:05an acquisition just to get somebody in to compete, as
- 13:08opposed to a guy who's played in the league, and
- 13:10maybe on the downside, like a Russell Douglas who's getting
- 13:13up there a little bit, or a guy who may
- 13:15have some upside in your coaching, you know, has the
- 13:18athleticism and maybe with some coaching in your coaching staff,
- 13:21you see the upside, then it makes more sense to
- 13:23go that route.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, that's pretty much where we're at with at
- 13:27It's that they'll evaluate over the next three and a
- 13:30half weeks and they'll have to make a decision. And
- 13:33the hope here is that from an ego standpoint, he
- 13:36looks so good, now is he in the mix to start?
- 13:39They don't feel like they have to add another corner, right.
- 13:43That's that's the upside of this thing. Now if he's
- 13:45if he doesn't look good, don't stay healthy, or he
- 13:48just you know, he's got to learn the system very quickly.
- 13:51This is that we give Gardner Johnson credit like he
- 13:54did one of the all time great jobs. And now
- 13:55with safety, who, by the way, was one of the
- 13:58best Nickels in the national FOLLO bully with the Saints.
- 14:00He was phenomenal there. This is a this is a
- 14:03different deal here, that he's going to be a corner here,
- 14:06and as Vic says, no, he's not Nickel Nichols dB
- 14:10Nichols Nickel Corner's corner. So we'll see what Bennett does here.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:13Speaker 1: One thing to be concerned about Adam with this guy,
- 14:15according is that he for for if he's gonna make
- 14:18this team and not be a starter. Uh, he has
- 14:21not played a ton of special teams very little career,
- 14:24just none last year and as a rookie that really
- 14:27especially at that position, because we know Ringo is a
- 14:31good special teams player. So at very least Ringo's got
- 14:34that if he doesn't win out the starting job.
- 14:36Speaker 2: That's just something to keep in mind. If we get
- 14:39closer to the fifty three.
- 14:40Speaker 3: They need him play corner man. They have desperate times
- 14:42called for desperate measures. But again they didn't wait. They
- 14:45didn't wait till the end of the month, which to
- 14:47me would have been a mistake. Right, how could it
- 14:50the way that Vic wants to If you don't know
- 14:52the defense you're coming in right at the start of
- 14:54the season. It's really hard.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you know, it's really hard. Definitely. All right,
- 14:59great stuff.
- 15:00Speaker 1: That is the intel that we have for you on
- 15:01this trade. That's gonna do it for Adam Kaplan. I'm
- 15:04Jeff Mosher.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Thanks for watching a special edition of Inside the Birds.
