Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, well, my name's Captain Ruin. That's my stage name.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I run our company, which is called Oozing Future. We
- 0:06Speaker 1: make kind of experimental, weird, punk sideshow. And this is
- 0:11Speaker 1: our first full national tour of a show called Circle
- 0:14Speaker 1: of Strange. And the show mixes a bunch of different
- 0:19Speaker 1: performance varieties. It's got all sorts of stuff. It's got
- 0:22Speaker 1: world-class contortion. It's got pole dancing. It's got drag. It's
- 0:26Speaker 1: got punk clowning. And it's got our very special.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Guest, the Lizardman. It's got me, that's right. I'm the Lizardman.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I am a professional freak. I'm here to be part
- 0:34Speaker 2: of Cirque du Soleil.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Fantastic, guys. Thanks for joining us from your tour van today.
- 0:41Speaker 2: No problem.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Very rock and roll indeed, my friend. You guys kick-started
- 0:49Speaker 3: the Circle of Strange regional tour in Victoria and New
- 0:51Speaker 3: South Wales last weekend, and now the Travel and Showcase
- 0:54Speaker 3: hits Queensland this week. Start on the Gold Coast on
- 0:57Speaker 3: Thursday before hitting the Mansfield Chubbin in Brisbane the following night,
- 1:01Speaker 3: then winding your way through the Sunny Coast, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay,
- 1:04Speaker 3: and finishing in Townsville on September 26th, guys. Do you
- 1:08Speaker 3: know where you got yourself in for going up there, mate?
- 1:10Speaker 3: It's pretty crazy up north.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah. It is pretty crazy.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And yeah, it's an interesting cast of all sorts of strange, queer, eccentric,
- 1:20Speaker 1: alternative people. And what I think is really cool is
- 1:23Speaker 1: that our audiences are all joined together by their love
- 1:25Speaker 1: of weird shit, you know. So what's your form in Albury,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you perform in Melbourne, you perform in Bundaberg. And it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: the same people coming up to you after the show going,
- 1:34Speaker 1: that was fucking sick.
- 1:35Speaker 2: We need more of this in our town. Please come
- 1:37Speaker 2: back next year.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I've got to say, though, good on you guys for
- 1:41Speaker 3: doing the regional shows. Even a lot of bands don't
- 1:44Speaker 3: get out there because I'm from Cairns originally, so I
- 1:47Speaker 3: know what it's like up there to not get much
- 1:48Speaker 3: stuff happening. But you guys are doing the full track regionals,
- 1:52Speaker 3: so good on you.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Thanks, man. Thank you, yeah. I mean, that's what's important.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I actually come from a very small town back in
- 1:58Speaker 4: the States, and I remember growing up not getting live entertainment,
- 2:01Speaker 4: not getting shows, having to travel if you wanted to
- 2:03Speaker 4: see anything. So if I can go out to someplace
- 2:06Speaker 4: like that, I feel that kind of pays it back
- 2:08Speaker 4: for me.
- 2:10Speaker 3: For sure. Like I say, you're a couple of shows deep.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You've done the shows in Sydney and New South Wales.
- 2:15Speaker 3: So how'd they go? What was the audience reaction?
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah, so we started in Geelong and then we went
- 2:21Speaker 1: up to Albury, just on the border of New South Wales.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And then we did a hometown show in Melbourne, which
- 2:26Speaker 1: is where most of us are from.
- 2:28Speaker 2: And they've been excellent.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah, so far we're having lots of great feedback after
- 2:32Speaker 1: the show. people saying they just can't believe what they're seeing.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Also people saying that they feel really comfortable to be
- 2:37Speaker 1: themselves in the audience, that there's a lot of room
- 2:41Speaker 1: for people to be different and strange and unusual. Yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and it's also really great taking a show that moves,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know, so we're just getting into the kind of
- 2:49Speaker 1: habit of the pack up and the pack down, which
- 2:51Speaker 1: is all part of the rehearsal process.
- 2:53Speaker 2: All the fear in the back.
- 2:55Speaker 3: You've done well to fit all that in, guys. You've
- 2:56Speaker 3: done really well.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I think the best part of the tour so far
- 2:59Speaker 1: is realising that the whole show does actually.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Fit in the van. It's a very important moment.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Very, very important.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And not to be taken for granted because it wasn't
- 3:08Speaker 2: for sure. There's no guarantee.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Well, there you go. See, Queensland's working out for you already.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's beautiful. 24 degrees. It was raining when
- 3:17Speaker 2: we left Melbourne, which is always the best time to leave. Yep.
- 3:22Speaker 3: This show has been described as a punk circus of
- 3:24Speaker 3: your craziest dreams. I've got to tell you guys, I've
- 3:27Speaker 3: had some pretty crazy dreams over the years, so this
- 3:30Speaker 3: show must be next level.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Well, in your dreams, do people's skin get peeled off?
- 3:37Speaker 4: Do they bend in weird ways? Do things happen you've
- 3:40Speaker 4: never seen happen in real life before? If I said yes.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Would you think any less of me?
- 3:48Speaker 2: More of you, more of you. I forgot to mention,
- 3:53Speaker 2: we've also got puppetry in the show as well.
- 3:55Speaker 1: So there's a bunch of kind of crazy costumes that
- 3:57Speaker 1: have layers to them and that kind of stuff and
- 3:59Speaker 1: bits that move. because we're just trying to build a
- 4:02Speaker 1: world that's really visually surreal. You know, it looks like
- 4:05Speaker 1: a crazy dream and anything can happen, basically. Anything can
- 4:09Speaker 1: happen and it probably will.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And it probably will. So more accurately, guys, I reckon
- 4:14Speaker 3: the evening's essentially an unconventional night of circus, sideshow and cabaret,
- 4:18Speaker 3: but with a difference. So for those who might still
- 4:21Speaker 3: be thinking this is a normal run-of-the-mill circus with sugar
- 4:23Speaker 3: and spice and all things nice, tell us more about
- 4:26Speaker 3: Circular Strange and how it differs to your normal ringside experience.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Well, I guess I've always been kind of inspired by
- 4:33Speaker 1: the Lizard Man, you know, so we've been working together
- 4:35Speaker 1: for maybe like 10 years now. And I love the
- 4:37Speaker 1: idea of like human cartoons, you know, like the line
- 4:40Speaker 1: where the human crosses over into something that's more than human.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And I think the circus is one of those places
- 4:45Speaker 1: where really it's like surrealism.
- 4:48Speaker 2: It's like dreams come to life.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Like when you watch a contortionist like Soliana, who's in
- 4:52Speaker 1: the show, you just find yourself thinking, how can a
- 4:54Speaker 1: human body actually do that?
- 4:56Speaker 2: Like, how is that physically possible?
- 4:58Speaker 1: So I guess the thing that we have programmed the
- 5:00Speaker 1: show around is really leaning into that kind of cartoonish,
- 5:04Speaker 1: surreal element of making extremely visual material, yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 4: There's that moment, right, where you're watching something and you
- 5:12Speaker 4: have expectations based on the normal world and normal experience,
- 5:16Speaker 4: and then it gets subverted by the fact that we can,
- 5:18Speaker 4: with our bodies, do things.
- 5:19Speaker 2: That shouldn't be done.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Don't try this at home.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Don't try it at home. Is it interactive with the crowd? Like,
- 5:26Speaker 3: do you engage with the crowd while you perform it,
- 5:28Speaker 3: or do you have to keep it serious while you're
- 5:30Speaker 3: on there?
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I start the– well, I tried to crowd surf
- 5:33Speaker 1: at the ESPY, but they were a bit– I was
- 5:38Speaker 1: wearing a massive clown nose and a mini skirt.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Maybe that had something to do with it.
- 5:43Speaker 4: To people who are coming out to the shows at
- 5:45Speaker 4: the start of the show, get your hands up. Some
- 5:46Speaker 4: support for the captain when he comes over that barricade.
- 5:49Speaker 1: We actually, we don't use audience volunteers, but you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: because we're playing these kind of band rooms, it is
- 5:55Speaker 1: very interactive because we're feeding back off the energy of
- 5:58Speaker 1: the audience. And like, that kind of comes from our
- 6:00Speaker 1: experience doing festivals as well. So, um, this company oozing future,
- 6:04Speaker 1: we also program a stage at good things called stage six, six, six, which, uh,
- 6:08Speaker 1: this amount of past year. And like, We really feed
- 6:11Speaker 1: off the energy of the crowd, just like a band does,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you know? So we get people involved, we get them cheering,
- 6:16Speaker 1: we get them, you know, feeding back to us what
- 6:18Speaker 1: they're into.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Even if it's not like physically bringing a volunteer onto stage,
- 6:22Speaker 4: it is very much an energy exchange that goes back
- 6:24Speaker 4: and forth. It is interactive intensely in that way. We
- 6:27Speaker 4: draw a lot from the crowd and we give a
- 6:29Speaker 4: lot back to the crowd. We just don't physically move
- 6:32Speaker 4: them onto stage.
- 6:34Speaker 3: For legal reasons, of course.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Well, yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You sort of touched on this before, guys, but the
- 6:41Speaker 3: cast features, you've got the world-famous Lizardman, the contort sensation,
- 6:45Speaker 3: Soliana Ursi, pole artist, Stenbot, drag-less performer, Winchard Green, and
- 6:50Speaker 3: Captain Ruin, the Puck Clown. Is it controlled chaos up
- 6:54Speaker 3: there on stage or is it anything goes?
- 6:57Speaker 1: It's the same show every single night. That's the last millisecond.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It's fine, but it's not orchestrated.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Look, we will tell you it's controlled, but just know
- 7:06Speaker 4: that we're not always completely honest.
- 7:10Speaker 2: It may or may not be controlled.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I mean, there's a certain kind of magic that comes
- 7:14Speaker 1: from putting on a new show and having a couple
- 7:16Speaker 1: of days of rehearsal and just throwing it all on
- 7:18Speaker 1: stage and seeing what happens. And that's part of the,
- 7:21Speaker 1: that's part of the excitement really of how we make
- 7:23Speaker 1: stuff is that it is very punk and it is
- 7:25Speaker 1: very DIY. So there's a lot of handmade stuff in
- 7:28Speaker 1: the show and we're sort of figuring it out as
- 7:30Speaker 1: we go, but that's, That's part of the fun for
- 7:33Speaker 1: the audience, really, is seeing where the wheels might come off.
- 7:36Speaker 2: It's fun for us and for the audience. See what happens.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Awesome. Now, yourself, listen, man, you're one of the main
- 7:44Speaker 3: draw cards, I guess. You've been on Ripley's Believe It
- 7:47Speaker 3: or Not. You're known all around the world, mate. So
- 7:49Speaker 3: what the hell is a lizard doing over here in
- 7:52Speaker 3: Australia where it's fucking hot? And so far, what are
- 7:55Speaker 3: you doing over here, man? How did you get involved?
- 7:57Speaker 4: You just said it yourself. This is lizard country right here.
- 8:00Speaker 4: This is good climate for a lizard. I'm loving it.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Because back home, it's just starting to get cold. So
- 8:05Speaker 4: I'm happy to get down here in the sun. I've
- 8:10Speaker 4: been coming down to Australia since about 2012, I think
- 8:14Speaker 4: was my first trip. And from that first trip, it's
- 8:17Speaker 4: just been a love affair on my side. I've never
- 8:20Speaker 4: had a bad time down here, no matter what show,
- 8:23Speaker 4: what time I've done.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And it just keeps getting better.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Very nice. Andy, you know, you perform as Captain Ruin
- 8:31Speaker 3: and you mix punk clowning with extreme stunts, including hanging
- 8:35Speaker 3: weights off your no-no special place. How do you mentally
- 8:40Speaker 3: prepare for that level of physical vulnerability in front of
- 8:43Speaker 3: a live, unpredictable crowd every night?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Oh, what a great question.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it is a great question.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah. How do you prepare for it? Well, I shave
- 8:52Speaker 2: my balls.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Because actually the worst part of that routine is if
- 9:03Speaker 5: you get your hair caught in the equipment, that's when
- 9:06Speaker 5: it really hurts.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Hair removal is very important to sideshow. It's bizarre the
- 9:14Speaker 2: things you end up doing to get ready for a show, yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 3: That could be where you get the crowd participation. You
- 9:19Speaker 3: could have someone come up and shave your balls every night.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Whoa. They'd need a very steady hand.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Yeah. So you're not a very trusting guy.
- 9:29Speaker 1: We encourage our audience to get drunk, you know, support
- 9:32Speaker 1: local pubs, have a couple of beers, get tipsy, make
- 9:35Speaker 1: us look even wobblier and weirder.
- 9:38Speaker 4: We're not asking you to be responsible when you show
- 9:40Speaker 4: up to the show just to come and watch and
- 9:42Speaker 4: have fun.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Thank fuck for that. To do with the stuff that
- 9:47Speaker 3: you guys do, like it's bound to have gone pear-shaped
- 9:49Speaker 3: on more than one occasion. So what's the most freaked
- 9:52Speaker 3: out you've ever been for your own or someone else's safety?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good one.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Have an act that i don't do so much anymore
- 10:01Speaker 1: where i get out of a straight jacket while i'm
- 10:03Speaker 1: on roller skates and um i was doing the australian
- 10:07Speaker 1: tattoo expo and i just misjudged my landing and instead
- 10:10Speaker 1: of landing on my elbow i landed on my forehead
- 10:13Speaker 1: and i split my entire eyebrow open um but of
- 10:17Speaker 1: course i was on stage and i'm a professional i
- 10:20Speaker 1: got back up and went flick and like blood went
- 10:22Speaker 1: all over the front row and uh just kept going
- 10:26Speaker 1: got out of the straight jacket went straight to hospital
- 10:28Speaker 1: i think i had five stitches came back and then
- 10:30Speaker 1: did the next show an hour later nice.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Now you're gonna top that one lizard man.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Uh i was doing a a live tv show in
- 10:39Speaker 4: malaysia And we were waiting. So it was supposed to
- 10:43Speaker 4: be a Malaysian performer went and he walked on a
- 10:45Speaker 4: bed of coals. And the person that I was with,
- 10:48Speaker 4: we were in teams of performers with the Space Cowboy,
- 10:51Speaker 4: actually another Australian performer.
- 10:52Speaker 2: We were there.
- 10:53Speaker 4: And after he walked across the bed of coals, I
- 10:55Speaker 4: kind of looked at Cowboy and said, I'm going to
- 10:57Speaker 4: walk on the coals. And I took I took the
- 10:59Speaker 4: first and he climbed up on my shoulder so I
- 11:01Speaker 4: would carry him across the coals. I put my foot
- 11:02Speaker 4: down the first step and went, hey, wait. I didn't
- 11:05Speaker 4: prepare these. I don't know how he does this. So
- 11:08Speaker 4: at that point, I was just like, okay, I got
- 11:09Speaker 4: to run across these coals as fast as possible without
- 11:12Speaker 4: falling with another dude on my shoulders.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Jesus.
- 11:15Speaker 3: So I was a.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Little dicey in the middle of that.
- 11:17Speaker 3: How blistered were your feet after that?
- 11:21Speaker 4: Actually, my feet did not get blistered from the coals
- 11:23Speaker 4: at all, but they were also doing broken glass, and
- 11:26Speaker 4: a piece of glass had flown outside of the area,
- 11:29Speaker 4: so that went in my foot when I stepped off
- 11:31Speaker 4: the coals.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Stepped off the coals onto a piece of glass. Classic.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Unfortunately, commercial break.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Pull it out of my foot. Keep going.
- 11:39Speaker 3: That's unreal. I notice you aren't even selling upgrades by
- 11:44Speaker 3: the book either. You've tossed aside the traditional VIP upgrade
- 11:48Speaker 3: in favor of VSP tickets. What the fuck does that
- 11:51Speaker 3: stand for? And what does that get the person?
- 11:53Speaker 2: It's kind of like a halal snack pack.
- 11:58Speaker 3: It blows up in your face.
- 12:01Speaker 2: So we offer.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Early entry to people who want to come along and
- 12:05Speaker 1: have a bit of a chance to chat and hang
- 12:06Speaker 1: out with us from the show. You know, people often
- 12:10Speaker 1: have really burning questions about Lizardman. As you mentioned, he's
- 12:12Speaker 1: known around the world. So it just gives people that
- 12:15Speaker 1: chance to kind of come in. They get a free T-shirt.
- 12:17Speaker 1: They get a free drink. They get to sit around
- 12:19Speaker 1: with us. And then we take a photo and give
- 12:22Speaker 1: it to them, print it out right there and then.
- 12:23Speaker 1: So they've got like a signed piece of merchandise souvenir
- 12:27Speaker 1: to take away.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And the idea of calling it very special people instead
- 12:30Speaker 4: of VIPs is historically.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Very strange people. Oh, great. Well, anyway, I'll still say it.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Historically in the States, behind the scenes, freaks were referred
- 12:41Speaker 4: to as very special people. That was language that was
- 12:44Speaker 4: used within the industry at one time.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Sounds like everyone's learned something.
- 12:51Speaker 2: We're always learning here. Always learning.
- 12:54Speaker 3: On a little side thing, Mitch, I came across something
- 12:56Speaker 3: you've done, mate. You've just launched a book called No
- 12:59Speaker 3: Horizon and Australian Punk in a Turkish Prison. That sounds intriguing, man.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Tell us more about that.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's my self-published memoir, which I brought out
- 13:09Speaker 1: last month with the assistance of a Kickstarter campaign.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Oh, look.
- 13:13Speaker 2: It's my copy. You can't have this one.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's about something that happened to me about
- 13:19Speaker 1: 15 years ago when I was hitchhiking around the Middle East.
- 13:22Speaker 1: and got in a street fight in Istanbul and someone
- 13:26Speaker 1: got stabbed and I got blamed. And so I went
- 13:29Speaker 1: to jail while I was waiting to go to court
- 13:32Speaker 1: to try and clear my name. And the book is
- 13:34Speaker 1: kind of about the lessons of emotional maturity that I
- 13:38Speaker 1: learned from some older prisoners who took me under their
- 13:41Speaker 1: wing while I was inside.
- 13:42Speaker 2: And it's a.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Very punked story, not only because of the actual tale,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but because of the way that it's come about, you know,
- 13:49Speaker 1: so it's quite a, I call it Do It Together
- 13:52Speaker 1: rather than DIY. It's D-I-T, Do It Together. So with
- 13:55Speaker 1: the support of our community of people who are interested
- 13:58Speaker 1: in alternative culture, we've brought this book out, which means
- 14:01Speaker 1: that everybody gets access to a story that I hope
- 14:04Speaker 1: will be useful, particularly for young men who might be
- 14:07Speaker 1: struggling with anger or for people who are interested in
- 14:10Speaker 1: men's behavioral change more generally.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah, well, that's really cool, man. Really cool. But enough
- 14:15Speaker 3: about you. Let's get back to the circus. Yeah, that's right.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And it's fair to say the circus or Cirque du
- 14:21Speaker 3: Lestrange isn't for the squeamish man, but people shouldn't let
- 14:23Speaker 3: a little thing like a soft belly put them off
- 14:25Speaker 3: either because the show isn't just about making people swim,
- 14:28Speaker 3: is it? It's like it's more about embracing the inner
- 14:30Speaker 3: freak in all of us.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 14:33Speaker 4: And if you do get that little bit of scrum there,
- 14:35Speaker 4: if that's concerning someone, remember that we always present in
- 14:39Speaker 4: a way that's going to make it palatable to you.
- 14:42Speaker 4: We want to show you something weird, strange and bizarre
- 14:44Speaker 4: that if you hear it described, you might be like, oh,
- 14:47Speaker 4: I don't know if I want to see that. But
- 14:48Speaker 4: when you see it in the context of the show,
- 14:50Speaker 4: you're going to be laughing.
- 14:51Speaker 2: You're going to be cheering. You're going to be loving it.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You know, we we give you that context by building
- 14:55Speaker 4: the world that we perform in. Yeah, nice.
- 14:59Speaker 3: And just say people are still a bit unsure and
- 15:01Speaker 3: they're on the fence about going. Guys, here's your last chance.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Push them over the edge and tell us why Cirque
- 15:07Speaker 3: du Lestrange is a show not to be missed.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well, we just want to make people part of our
- 15:11Speaker 2: freak family.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Around the whole east coast of Australia, we're joining people together,
- 15:15Speaker 1: making them part of something bigger, which is alternative culture
- 15:18Speaker 1: and punk culture that we need to keep alive here
- 15:21Speaker 1: in Australia. It's important to show up for stuff like this,
- 15:24Speaker 1: going out to live entertainment, essentially keeps it alive in Australia.
