- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite
- 0:19- leaders are deliberate about where they go to
- 0:21- pressure test their thinking.

- 0:50- This is Laura Dirdo with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:53- podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:55- Ashley Bertuno, chief executive officer of the Arizona
- 0:58- market for a health care outcomes performance company.
- 1:00- Ashley, it's a pleasure to have you on
- 1:01- the podcast today.
- 1:03- Hey, Laura. Thank you for having me today.
- 1:05- I'm really excited to be here.
- 1:07- Absolutely. And I'm looking forward to our conversation.
- 1:09- I know you're doing some incredible things
- 1:12- and really a lot to be proud of
- 1:13- over the last year, especially
- 1:15- then looking into where growth is gonna come
- 1:17- from in the next couple years or so
- 1:18- as well. But before we dig into the
- 1:20- broader conversation, can you tell us a little
- 1:22- bit more about yourself, your background, and health
- 1:24- care outcomes performance company?
- 1:26- Sure.
- 1:27- My my background is really around fifteen plus
- 1:30- years in the health care industry,
- 1:32- starting in physician practices,
- 1:36- then overall
- 1:37- service line
- 1:38- management over multiple service lines inclusive of some
- 1:43- physician alignment strategies.
- 1:45- And then over the last,
- 1:47- six years,
- 1:48- hospital CEO with, with HCA
- 1:51- and really
- 1:53- focused on
- 1:54- building services,
- 1:56- growing and working through teams
- 1:59- and
- 2:00- being a,
- 2:01- I'd say a force to be reckoned with
- 2:03- in the community.
- 2:04- And so now,
- 2:07- within the last month,
- 2:09- I've transitioned
- 2:10- to Arizona
- 2:12- as leading the Arizona market for Copco
- 2:15- and it's an exciting new beginning for me
- 2:18- and
- 2:19- I couldn't be more thrilled to be leading
- 2:21- this organization
- 2:23- at this time in in our really in
- 2:25- our healthcare industry.
- 2:28- Absolutely. And what a fascinating time it is
- 2:30- with so much transformation and growth and opportunities,
- 2:33- as well as some very real challenges. So
- 2:36- I'm curious. Could you give us just a
- 2:38- quick state of the union of APCO and
- 2:40- in particular,
- 2:41- the Arizona market? What has gone well this
- 2:44- year so far, and what do you focus
- 2:45- on for the rest of 2026?
- 2:48- Yeah. Great question.
- 2:50- I think '26 has been a year of
- 2:52- new beginnings
- 2:53- for me.
- 2:55- One thing I'd highlight
- 2:56- is that Arizona market has
- 2:59- celebrated last year their twentieth year in the
- 3:02- community. So really long standing
- 3:05- organization
- 3:06- that has been providing care to the Arizona
- 3:11- community. And what's important with that is
- 3:14- I've stepped into this CEO role leading the
- 3:16- Arizona market,
- 3:18- but also understanding
- 3:21- that my first two months are around listening,
- 3:23- learning, and building the relationships.
- 3:25- And I am incredibly
- 3:27- impressed
- 3:28- by our physicians,
- 3:30- our clinical teams, and the strong culture that
- 3:33- is already in place. And I think that's
- 3:34- what speaks volumes
- 3:36- when you hear that this organization has actually
- 3:39- had a lasting legacy for twenty plus years.
- 3:42- As we finish and and really look at
- 3:44- the the next six months of of 2026,
- 3:48- my priorities
- 3:49- really align around three things and that's strengthening
- 3:52- our physician alignment and engagement,
- 3:55- expanding our patient access so people receive the
- 3:58- right care at the right time in the
- 4:00- right setting,
- 4:01- and building the long term strategy that allows
- 4:04- us to continue to grow
- 4:06- while we're continuing on our on our footprint
- 4:09- of quality
- 4:11- outcomes, our value based care, and keeping the
- 4:14- patient at the center of what we do.
- 4:17- So I I've always said this and I
- 4:19- think, Laura, we've talked before that health care
- 4:22- is local.
- 4:23- Every market is unique.
- 4:26- And before you can lead and before I
- 4:28- lead, you have to understand the people you're
- 4:30- leading. And that's where I'm at today and
- 4:33- couldn't be more excited for the next six
- 4:34- months in '26.
- 4:37- That's amazing to hear. And, you know, I
- 4:39- I think to your point, being able to
- 4:40- understand
- 4:41- the team that you have, the the,
- 4:44- organization, and then learning, you know, what's gonna
- 4:46- be the best for growth in the future
- 4:48- is so critical.
- 4:50- So I'm curious. You know, as you're going
- 4:52- around it and and learning the new organization,
- 4:55- becoming more integrated with TopCo and and the
- 4:57- team,
- 4:58- what are some of the ways that you've
- 5:00- been able to connect and,
- 5:02- really understand the local market and some of
- 5:04- the unique things about it, as well as
- 5:06- how, you know, what are you is exciting
- 5:08- to, I guess, about this whole process?
- 5:11- We have a really robust
- 5:14- team of experts
- 5:16- here at our corporate,
- 5:18- corporate offices, but even in the field. So
- 5:20- all of our frontline staff really do have
- 5:23- a wealth of institutional knowledge.
- 5:26- Really learning from them. I mean, that's the
- 5:28- key is building the relationships
- 5:31- with our physicians,
- 5:32- with our frontline staff
- 5:34- and having a cadence to understand
- 5:37- where they are today, where we're going as
- 5:39- an organization and truly,
- 5:42- how do we
- 5:44- move forward and
- 5:46- grow with
- 5:48- the innovation
- 5:49- and,
- 5:50- the connections that we can truly make in
- 5:52- the community. I think that we've had some
- 5:54- really long standing partnerships
- 5:57- and I couldn't be more excited to really
- 6:00- lean into those as well as learn from
- 6:03- our health systems that are here because we
- 6:06- are we're part of that whole ecosystem.
- 6:09- So it's it's going to take
- 6:12- a lot of,
- 6:14- time in the sense
- 6:15- of being
- 6:17- in the community,
- 6:18- learning
- 6:19- through our partnerships
- 6:21- and existing relationships, and then also our own
- 6:24- team that have really spearheaded the last twenty
- 6:27- plus years.
- 6:28- I really appreciate that. It's amazing to hear
- 6:31- and, you know, what a great opportunity for
- 6:32- you to keep growing and innovating with the,
- 6:35- team that you've got there in Arizona.
- 6:37- Now I'm curious, what are some of the
- 6:39- big headwinds that you're keeping your eye on
- 6:41- and preparing for?
- 6:42- Oh,
- 6:43- man. That's a that that could be a
- 6:45- loaded question, Laura. I'm sure you've seen this
- 6:47- across
- 6:48- all of health care.
- 6:50- We're facing
- 6:51- every everyone's facing financial pressures with multiple directions.
- 6:55- You've got labor costs remain a bit elevated.
- 6:58- Physician reimbursement
- 7:00- continues to be some challenge, especially I think
- 7:02- I saw, recent articles on upcoming changes.
- 7:06- And CMS continues to look at reshaping physician
- 7:09- payment.
- 7:10- At the end of the day, every healthcare
- 7:12- leader is challenged
- 7:14- in a and I think in a great
- 7:16- way to think differently on how we deliver
- 7:18- that high value care. And this is the
- 7:20- opportunity
- 7:21- to really
- 7:23- put pen to paper on what's gonna work,
- 7:26- what could we try,
- 7:27- and what what really is gonna set us
- 7:30- in the right direction forward.
- 7:33- I I don't believe
- 7:35- that our future is truly defined by the
- 7:37- reimbursement alone. I think we've really got a
- 7:39- good background in our value based care here
- 7:42- in our organization, and so you'll hear that
- 7:44- a lot when we talk about HOPCO.
- 7:47- And the organizations that are gonna thrive will
- 7:49- be the ones that are innovative,
- 7:52- embracing
- 7:53- technology
- 7:54- and just the responsibility
- 7:55- that comes with that,
- 7:57- reducing our unnecessary
- 7:59- complexity,
- 8:00- so thinking of just how do we reduce
- 8:02- our system as a whole on complexity and
- 8:04- keeping things simple
- 8:06- and continuing to invest in our physicians
- 8:09- so that we can truly focus on or
- 8:12- well, really, they can focus on, but delivering
- 8:14- that exceptional care.
- 8:16- It's it's just imperative that
- 8:18- we think about all of those things
- 8:21- and
- 8:23- and really move the organization,
- 8:26- in that direction.
- 8:27- And honestly, our job isn't simply to manage
- 8:30- through change,
- 8:32- it's to lead through it.
- 8:34- And I think that's what you're gonna see
- 8:36- as you you kinda see some of these
- 8:38- headwinds that are facing,
- 8:40- again, not just our organization, but every organization
- 8:43- that's out there.
- 8:45- I love it. I I think that makes
- 8:46- a ton of sense. It's just exciting at
- 8:48- the possibilities when you think about value based
- 8:50- care, when you look at technology and what's
- 8:52- becoming possible today that never was in the
- 8:54- past. I I think a lot of, potential
- 8:58- and excitement around those things and, truly being
- 9:00- able to then pass along a lot of
- 9:03- those efficiencies and improvements to the patient population.
- 9:06- And to that point, where do you see
- 9:08- some of the best opportunities for growth in
- 9:10- the next two to three years? Obviously,
- 9:12- challenges ahead, but I can imagine, you you
- 9:14- know, looking into the future, there's some really
- 9:16- bright spots as well.
- 9:18- Oh, you hit it. I mean, you hit
- 9:19- it on, hit the nail on the head.
- 9:22- I believe the greatest opportunity is expanding access
- 9:25- while really while continuing to improve outcomes. And
- 9:28- that's where
- 9:29- I'm very proud of, being here at HOPCO
- 9:32- because I do think we're leading in that
- 9:34- state.
- 9:35- Healthcare is moving beyond the traditional hospital campus.
- 9:40- Patients are are really consumers now and they're
- 9:43- increasingly
- 9:44- wanting care that's
- 9:46- that access is convenient,
- 9:48- it's coordinated,
- 9:49- and delivered
- 9:50- in a lower cost, high quality setting.
- 9:54- And so with that,
- 9:56- that means
- 9:58- growth in recruiting outstanding physicians,
- 10:01- which
- 10:02- we do,
- 10:03- expanding the ambulatory
- 10:05- and our specialty care,
- 10:08- inclusive of our specialty hospitals,
- 10:10- and leveraging the technology. Again, new advancements that
- 10:13- are coming out that we could really leverage
- 10:16- in improving patient experience but outcomes,
- 10:19- that's what's gonna set us apart in our
- 10:22- next growth.
- 10:23- We'll stay relentless
- 10:24- and focus on value for patients and then
- 10:27- sustainable growth that actually follows.
- 10:30- Love it. That that makes a ton of
- 10:32- sense. And I know to your point, being
- 10:34- able to figure out what's going to be
- 10:37- in that specialty space, how inventory is moving.
- 10:40- I know, especially, when you think about Orthopedics,
- 10:42- it's amazing to look out and and see
- 10:44- what you're able to do in the outpatient
- 10:46- setting, and then just continue to
- 10:49- deliver
- 10:50- higher quality care at that lower cost setting.
- 10:52- So, do you see that continue to spread,
- 10:55- across the regions and and country and more?
- 10:58- I do. Yeah. I mean, I think you
- 11:00- see that just even in how,
- 11:02- innovation is coming
- 11:04- And different services,
- 11:07- again, outside of muscular skeletal
- 11:09- and neurosciences
- 11:11- are really looking at opportunity that is consumer
- 11:15- driven.
- 11:16- I mean, really,
- 11:17- we've gotten very, we've we've got smart consumers
- 11:20- out there. And so they're doing their due
- 11:23- diligence, they're doing their homework,
- 11:25- and they're asking the questions.
- 11:28- That's amazing to hear and so important.
- 11:30- A huge huge seed change in health care
- 11:33- where it's not just, you know,
- 11:35- blindly doing what's prescribed to them, but really
- 11:37- seeing and doing research and understanding what's gonna
- 11:40- be best and and pushing for that high
- 11:41- quality as well. Now before we wrap up
- 11:44- here, I'm curious, who do you admire as
- 11:46- a leader, really, from any industry and why?
- 11:49- I am going to say, and this is
- 11:52- really let me just preface, this is based
- 11:54- on
- 11:55- innovation,
- 11:56- like really
- 11:58- who is challenging
- 12:00- the status quo
- 12:02- and pushing the agenda forward, and I would
- 12:04- actually say Elon Musk.
- 12:07- I mean,
- 12:08- his his companies have done a lot of
- 12:11- innovative work and really challenged the status quo
- 12:15- from
- 12:16- the, you know, the electric vehicles with Tesla,
- 12:20- then you've got rockets and and SpaceX
- 12:23- and really leveraging
- 12:25- AI and robotics.
- 12:27- And I think those challenges
- 12:29- allow us to think differently even in our
- 12:32- own industry and you're seeing that with the
- 12:34- innovation that has come from
- 12:38- really the tech world, that's now even getting
- 12:41- further into health care.
- 12:44- It's it's really around what I see in
- 12:47- him as the willingness to tackle the extraordinarily
- 12:50- difficult problems
- 12:52- with a long term thinking and vision. And
- 12:55- and it's calculated
- 12:57- and
- 12:59- he's been able to execute
- 13:00- at an incredible pace. And and I think
- 13:03- as we look at health care today, it
- 13:05- is
- 13:06- rapidly changing.
- 13:08- And
- 13:10- thinking through how we
- 13:12- use innovation,
- 13:14- how we,
- 13:16- again, calculate the risk of it. Again, we've
- 13:18- got patients' lives
- 13:20- at our hands
- 13:22- and then what's the pace of play.
- 13:25- So
- 13:26- as as a health care leader,
- 13:28- I take inspiration from that kind of mindset
- 13:31- and I think we've got tremendous opportunity to
- 13:34- innovate and our responsibility
- 13:36- is to embrace change. I mean, we have
- 13:39- always been consistently changing
- 13:42- while keeping our patients and physicians and our
- 13:44- and our colleagues at the center of every
- 13:47- decision.
- 13:48- So
- 13:49- it's that that's who I would say,
- 13:52- I think to in today's world is someone
- 13:55- that
- 13:56- we could look, you know, look to see
- 13:58- how we can execute the same pace of
- 14:00- play that Elon does.
- 14:02- That makes a ton of sense, you know,
- 14:04- and Scott, as you mentioned, just really, really
- 14:06- forward thinking and so much innovation that's going
- 14:09- on, and and, you know, imagining things that
- 14:12- others never would've thought possible and then bringing
- 14:15- many of those things to fruition, which I
- 14:17- know is very similar to what you're doing
- 14:19- at ATCO when you think about just the
- 14:21- whole,
- 14:22- field, musculoskeletal
- 14:24- and specialty care and how that can really,
- 14:26- really, transform health care delivery and the way
- 14:29- you think about it.
- 14:30- Exactly.
- 14:31- Exactly. So there I mean, I think in
- 14:33- there's multiple leaders in
- 14:36- in different industries
- 14:38- and we all and that any one of
- 14:40- us, probably admire and and and take
- 14:43- note of in terms of how did they
- 14:46- do it, how could you bring that into
- 14:47- health care. And
- 14:49- it's exciting
- 14:51- and it's also,
- 14:52- there's best practices out there and even some
- 14:55- opportunity that
- 14:56- we could learn from and
- 14:58- and do possibly even better.
- 15:01- Absolutely.
- 15:02- That's such a great way to to think
- 15:05- about the world and and think about all
- 15:06- the changes that are happening today. Ashley, thank
- 15:08- you so much for joining us on the
- 15:10- podcast today. This has been such a fun
- 15:12- and inspiring conversation,
- 15:13- and I look forward to connecting with you
- 15:15- again soon. And I know you'll be speaking
- 15:17- at at our upcoming events. And so I
- 15:19- look forward to seeing you there and and,
- 15:21- talking through many of these things in person.
- 15:23- Laura, thank you so much for having me
- 15:25- today,
- 15:26- and really appreciate
- 15:28- what you and and Becker's do for our
- 15:31- community and in our healthcare industry. So again,
- 15:34- looking forward to seeing you in the next
- 15:36- couple months
- 15:37- and thank you for having me on the
- 15:39- show.
