Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: So, How Well Do You Embrace Change?
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here. You're listening in a five
- 0:21Speaker 1: minute Friday from Hurdle. Wow, this feels like my moment
- 0:25Speaker 1: to debrief with you. It's been three weeks since a
- 0:28Speaker 1: five minute Friday, and a lot has.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Been going on on my side.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I am on the tail end finally of being in
- 0:37Speaker 1: and out of home. I'm looking forward to a holiday
- 0:40Speaker 1: season in the New York area. I feel like, you know,
- 0:43Speaker 1: when I say stuff like that, though, something's going to
- 0:46Speaker 1: sneak up on me. But we're back with season fifteen,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and I kicked it off in a really big way
- 0:51Speaker 1: with Diego Perez better known to many of you now
- 0:55Speaker 1: as Young Pueblo. I got so many messages from so
- 0:58Speaker 1: many hurdlers telling me that not only they loved the episode,
- 1:01Speaker 1: but they also listened to it twice.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So thank you. Really.
- 1:07Speaker 1: If you're loving the content on Hurdle in this new
- 1:10Speaker 1: season as it continues, tell the world to share it
- 1:14Speaker 1: in your socials, share it in a review in Apple Podcasts,
- 1:18Speaker 1: rate and review the show in Spotify. All of that's important.
- 1:21Speaker 1: All of it means the world to me, so truly, truly,
- 1:24Speaker 1: thank you, So I owe you a little bit of
- 1:27Speaker 1: a state of the Union on all things Hurdle. I
- 1:31Speaker 1: decided over the last few months, not just the season break,
- 1:36Speaker 1: that I need to make this show back to twice
- 1:42Speaker 1: a week. That means that they are going to be
- 1:45Speaker 1: new episodes of Hurdle every Monday and Friday. Every Monday
- 1:50Speaker 1: will be an episode with a guest, whether it is
- 1:53Speaker 1: an industry CEO or an athlete sharing their story or
- 1:58Speaker 1: in the conventional vein of her moment and expert chiming
- 2:02Speaker 1: in on a topic that I and you all have
- 2:05Speaker 1: expressed interest in hearing about on the show. So, for example,
- 2:10Speaker 1: things that are coming up in the pipeline, I'm having
- 2:13Speaker 1: conversations with amazing people like Brianna Cope, who is a surfer,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and Alicia Munson, who has the woman's American record in
- 2:22Speaker 1: the five K. And then I'm also having important conversations
- 2:26Speaker 1: with a doctor about prescription weight loss drugs and a
- 2:29Speaker 1: therapist about what to do if seasonal.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Depression kicks in.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So what I'm trying to say here is that although
- 2:37Speaker 1: the cadence of the show is going to be going
- 2:40Speaker 1: down to twice a week, you will still be getting
- 2:43Speaker 1: all of the different types of content that you love
- 2:46Speaker 1: from Hurdle, and I'm doing this for two reasons. One,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I want to invest more effort, more time, more focus
- 2:53Speaker 1: on each and every episode that I bring to the feed.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And in order to do that and prioritize the other
- 3:00Speaker 1: things that I am interested in right now, which candidly
- 3:03Speaker 1: speaking includes bringing a multi city event series into the
- 3:07Speaker 1: universe in twenty twenty four.
- 3:09Speaker 2: More on that soon, I promise.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But in order to focus on those things, I need
- 3:15Speaker 1: to make sure that I'm giving everything a little bit
- 3:17Speaker 1: of breath. I promise. Kurdle isn't going anywhere. I Am
- 3:21Speaker 1: not going anywhere. You will still get so much of
- 3:23Speaker 1: the same content that you love from me on the
- 3:27Speaker 1: regular period. Now, what does this mean for you? How
- 3:30Speaker 1: can you help me? I know this is what you're
- 3:32Speaker 1: wondering in this moment. There are two ways you can
- 3:35Speaker 1: help me. First and foremost, I need your listener questions.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I cannot even express to you how many of you
- 3:43Speaker 1: have emailed and written and told me that you love
- 3:45Speaker 1: five Minute Friday. And if you love five Minute Friday,
- 3:48Speaker 1: then in order to keep it here, which is the plan,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I need you to participate.
- 3:52Speaker 2: This is a.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Community and I want to show up for you. So
- 3:54Speaker 1: I need you to show up for me. So that
- 3:56Speaker 1: is the first way that you can help me. The
- 3:59Speaker 1: second way is, as you can understand or imagine, there
- 4:03Speaker 1: are going to be less episodes in the feed. So
- 4:06Speaker 1: with that said, it means even more to me that
- 4:09Speaker 1: you share Hurdle, that you make sure you rate and
- 4:12Speaker 1: subscribe to Hurdle, that you are in the loop with
- 4:15Speaker 1: the podcast and you know exactly when every single episode
- 4:18Speaker 1: is dropping, so that you can support me and the show.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Am I a.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Little anxious about decreasing the cadence because that might affect
- 4:26Speaker 1: my numbers for sure, But I also am promising myself
- 4:31Speaker 1: that the quality of this podcast is going to increase,
- 4:34Speaker 1: not that I think that it hasn't been.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Astounding at least I hope so.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But I'm really planning to put all that I've got
- 4:41Speaker 1: into this moving forward, in this new cadence, and I
- 4:44Speaker 1: hope that in doing that, the episodes will be more meaty,
- 4:48Speaker 1: more substantial. They will really encourage you to come back
- 4:52Speaker 1: for more. Share them with your friends, share them with
- 4:55Speaker 1: your coworkers whoever, and spread the message the good word.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The word that I'm doing that is Hurdle.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Who I was a little a little antsy to tell
- 5:05Speaker 1: you that I'd love to hear your feedback, and also
- 5:09Speaker 1: when I say leave me a voice message. These voice messages, yes,
- 5:13Speaker 1: they can be listener questions, and I told you I
- 5:14Speaker 1: would love listener questions, but they can also just be
- 5:17Speaker 1: feedback comments. In the episode details, there's also a place
- 5:21Speaker 1: where you can write to me in Spotify, so maybe
- 5:26Speaker 1: take advantage of that or send us an email. It's
- 5:28Speaker 1: hello at Hurdle dot us. All feedback is helpful feedback,
- 5:32Speaker 1: so it's so so appreciated. Now, I do want to
- 5:36Speaker 1: tell you a quick story of my week, because that
- 5:38Speaker 1: is what I do here.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I was out on a run last week.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I actually ran three different evenings last week, which if
- 5:45Speaker 1: you keep up with me outside of the podcast, if
- 5:47Speaker 1: you follow on social, you know that I'm a morning
- 5:50Speaker 1: sweat person. So this was really just to blow off
- 5:53Speaker 1: some steam. I was feeling, like many of you, I
- 5:55Speaker 1: am sure, frustrated and confused and angry and sad about
- 6:00Speaker 1: what is going on in our world. And I realized
- 6:04Speaker 1: as I was on a run last Friday night, I
- 6:07Speaker 1: was trying to go over the Brooklyn Bridge and it
- 6:09Speaker 1: was maybe around five pm, and I don't know what
- 6:12Speaker 1: compelled me to take this route. I thought it was
- 6:14Speaker 1: a nice evening. I thought it would be a nice run,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and when I got there, I was met with the
- 6:19Speaker 1: fact that it is a very popular tourist destination on
- 6:22Speaker 1: Friday at a five pm, and so the run that
- 6:25Speaker 1: I was on was impossible of executing without stopping and
- 6:30Speaker 1: starting and being frustrated. And I noticed that I was
- 6:33Speaker 1: angry and my energy was frantic, and I was finding
- 6:38Speaker 1: that around me. I realized that as I literally felt
- 6:42Speaker 1: tears coming down my face because it was bubbling over,
- 6:45Speaker 1: my emotions were bubbling over, that I was being met
- 6:47Speaker 1: with that in return, and that in that moment after
- 6:50Speaker 1: I got over the bridge, after I wanted to scream,
- 6:55Speaker 1: I realized that that is what I was attracting, because
- 6:58Speaker 1: that is what I was bringing out, is the energy
- 7:00Speaker 1: that I was approaching the run the day the moment
- 7:03Speaker 1: with things are hard right now. No matter how you
- 7:07Speaker 1: feel about what is happening in our world, I will
- 7:09Speaker 1: say this is that we have the opportunity to choose
- 7:13Speaker 1: how we react, and we have the power to react
- 7:19Speaker 1: to our thoughts, and so not all of our thoughts
- 7:22Speaker 1: right now might be positive. But I am going to
- 7:25Speaker 1: show up and be a light in this world because
- 7:27Speaker 1: I have the opportunity to do that. I have the
- 7:30Speaker 1: opportunity to show up for my friends, to check in
- 7:32Speaker 1: on my family, to show up for you, my community,
- 7:34Speaker 1: because I care. And that doesn't mean that I am
- 7:37Speaker 1: not entitled to moments of weakness or to feel all
- 7:40Speaker 1: the things. But it does mean that I don't want
- 7:42Speaker 1: to be the person that is angry. I know who
- 7:45Speaker 1: I am at my core, and although it may be
- 7:48Speaker 1: hard to show up some days, I promise myself and
- 7:51Speaker 1: I promise my community that I will not let my
- 7:54Speaker 1: flame blow out. It's not going to happen. And that
- 7:58Speaker 1: doesn't mean again I can can't say this enough. It
- 8:00Speaker 1: doesn't mean in difficult times that you will not have
- 8:03Speaker 1: moments where you feel down and out. But it is
- 8:06Speaker 1: in difficult times that we truly have the opportunity to
- 8:09Speaker 1: learn who we really are at our course. I want light,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I want hope, I want positivity around me, and so
- 8:17Speaker 1: that is how I choose to approach my days to
- 8:20Speaker 1: the best of my ability as I move forward in
- 8:24Speaker 1: the difficult times. In the Weekly Hurdle this week, I
- 8:27Speaker 1: wrote about the topic of keystone habits and I'd encourage
- 8:30Speaker 1: you by clicking on over to the show notes, clicking
- 8:32Speaker 1: over to the Weekly Hurdle to read that and ask yourself,
- 8:35Speaker 1: what is it that you can do for yourself so
- 8:37Speaker 1: that you can better show up and be true to
- 8:39Speaker 1: who you are at your core?
- 8:42Speaker 2: What habit?
- 8:43Speaker 1: What thing can you do for you? Because self love
- 8:46Speaker 1: isn't selfish. Self love is essential for you to just
- 8:52Speaker 1: take an exhale and be the person you want to be.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I get it. It's hard, but we have the opportunity
- 8:59Speaker 1: to be there for each other. And now all listener question.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I am I'm curious. What would you say have been
- 9:06Speaker 3: the three major drivers for you over the last six
- 9:09Speaker 3: years in building yourself and your business? Would have been
- 9:12Speaker 3: your anchors during this time? I also want you to
- 9:15Speaker 3: reflect on your first ever show and what all you've
- 9:20Speaker 3: taken away from that moment to know And I'll give
- 9:23Speaker 3: a little bit of love, but one of the quotes
- 9:26Speaker 3: that you led with, although you can't go back and
- 9:28Speaker 3: change your beginning, you can't change your end.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Magic love it, Okay, Frankly, the response to this listener
- 9:35Speaker 1: question would be an entire episode, and I appreciate it
- 9:38Speaker 1: so much because it's really getting to the meet. I
- 9:43Speaker 1: want to answer the first part of the question, and
- 9:45Speaker 1: then I might take the second part and turn.
- 9:47Speaker 2: It into some sort of a reflection.
- 9:51Speaker 1: When you're asking me what have been cornerstones over the
- 9:54Speaker 1: last three years, what I've been my anchors as I've
- 9:56Speaker 1: been growing as a person, and of course you know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: as an entrepreneur and within business, I would say that
- 10:02Speaker 1: without a doubt, first and foremost, when you say the
- 10:04Speaker 1: word anchor, I think of my ankers, and that is
- 10:06Speaker 1: my people. I am so grateful to have learned the
- 10:10Speaker 1: lesson within the last ten years that it is anything
- 10:13Speaker 1: but quantity and all about quality when it comes to
- 10:15Speaker 1: the people that you surround yourself with. When I started
- 10:18Speaker 1: traveling more and giving more talks and giving more of
- 10:22Speaker 1: my energy becoming a constant energy dealer, I realize just
- 10:27Speaker 1: how important it was to not only keep my circle small,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but keep it full of people that fill me up,
- 10:33Speaker 1: of people that are in turn to me like I
- 10:35Speaker 1: am to them energy faucets. And so my ankers, the
- 10:39Speaker 1: people that I know that I can call on day
- 10:41Speaker 1: and night to support me, that love me for everything
- 10:44Speaker 1: that I am and never make me feel as though
- 10:47Speaker 1: I am anything less than those people. Those are at
- 10:52Speaker 1: the cornerstone of my success. When I think about other
- 10:57Speaker 1: akers in my life, I will say that this constant
- 11:00Speaker 1: and work that I'm doing, this constant self love process,
- 11:05Speaker 1: learning how to embrace everything that I am and understanding
- 11:08Speaker 1: that I will never be perfect, but that does not
- 11:10Speaker 1: mean that I can't come with appreciation for everything that
- 11:13Speaker 1: I am and everything that I will be. Self love
- 11:16Speaker 1: has been a major game changer for me as someone
- 11:19Speaker 1: who is on this never ending quest of wanting to
- 11:21Speaker 1: be her best self. That's also really big, and the
- 11:26Speaker 1: last cornerstone is truly just being a kind person. I
- 11:31Speaker 1: can't even tell you how many times someone comes back
- 11:34Speaker 1: into the picture that maybe I thought I'd never see again,
- 11:37Speaker 1: or that I interacted with once, or who knows.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I can give so many examples.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Someone that was in my DMS that like it came
- 11:43Speaker 1: at the craziest time and I didn't have a time
- 11:45Speaker 1: to thoughtfully respond, but at least in that moment I
- 11:48Speaker 1: was nice. And then months later I meet them and
- 11:49Speaker 1: they're actually someone who wants to help me land a
- 11:52Speaker 1: bag a big contract. I feel like I'm like going
- 11:55Speaker 1: off the deep end the rails. Whatever here you get
- 11:58Speaker 1: the picture. Being a good person is the cornerstone of
- 12:01Speaker 1: who who I am personally, professionally, period. I believe that
- 12:05Speaker 1: we have the opportunity every single day to wake up
- 12:08Speaker 1: and be a kind human, and I choose kindness even
- 12:12Speaker 1: when that choice feels more difficult than usual, which, again,
- 12:16Speaker 1: in these circumstances sometimes with what's going on in our world,
- 12:19Speaker 1: it does. But I know it to be true that
- 12:22Speaker 1: at my core, kindness is such a major value of mine,
- 12:26Speaker 1: and that everyone around us is going through something that
- 12:29Speaker 1: we know nothing about. So what an amazing opportunity to
- 12:32Speaker 1: be the person that makes someone else smile, that sees
- 12:35Speaker 1: someone holistically for all that it is that they are.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Period.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I want my community to know that I see you,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and I might not understand absolutely everything that you're going through,
- 12:47Speaker 1: but if you and I were to sit down one
- 12:49Speaker 1: on one, you know that I dam as well would try.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So Yeah, Kindness, self love, and my inkers. Those are
- 12:57Speaker 1: the three things that have made this entire journey so
- 13:01Speaker 1: far really, really, really monumental and much easier for me.
- 13:07Speaker 1: As for the second part of your question, which I love,
- 13:09Speaker 1: what have I taken away from since my first ever show? Well,
- 13:14Speaker 1: there is a six year birthday coming up for Hurdle
- 13:17Speaker 1: at the top of twenty twenty four, which is absolutely ludicrous.
- 13:21Speaker 1: If you asked me, and I promise you, there will
- 13:24Speaker 1: be an episode with so many takeaways answering this question now.
- 13:28Speaker 1: If you have a question that resonates in that vein,
- 13:31Speaker 1: if you want to know about things that I have
- 13:34Speaker 1: learned building this show, building this community, things about me
- 13:38Speaker 1: that have changed since I started. I am all ears
- 13:41Speaker 1: because I can answer all of these questions in that
- 13:43Speaker 1: special episode. Again, the link is in the show notes.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Leave me a voice message. I'm happy to answer your questions,
- 13:50Speaker 1: and if for some reason that feels wonky on your end,
- 13:52Speaker 1: it happens.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I get it.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Technology can be weird. Email your voice memo over at
- 13:58Speaker 1: Hello at Hurdle Dot. That's it for now. Thanks for
- 14:03Speaker 1: being a part of my community. I am so grateful
- 14:05Speaker 1: to have you another Hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
