- 0:01Hi, and welcome to the Seated podcast with Furniture Row.
- 0:04I'm Jessa, creative director and design extraordinaire.
- 0:08And I'm Barb, interior designer and buyer.
- 0:12Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode of Seated
- 0:17with Furniture Row. Like we said, I'm Jessa.
- 0:20I'm the creative director. She's Barb.
- 0:23I'm Barb, interior design extraordinaire.
- 0:29Yeah, and today we're talking about whimsy, which is actually
- 0:35very pervasive in society today. It is.
- 0:41I love your tea cup, that's very whimsical.
- 0:43I feel it makes me feel whimsical for sure.
- 0:47But yeah, we're gonna talk about why we're seeing it and culture
- 0:53a lot, where we're seeing it kind of where we've seen it in
- 0:57the past, what it looks like today, and then actionable
- 1:02things for you guys to be able to incorporate it into your
- 1:06homes in a fun and whimsical way.
- 1:10And I think that everybody's perception of whimsical may not
- 1:14be exactly what Whimsie actually is.
- 1:19And you might find that whimsies a little bit easier to
- 1:22incorporate than you think. So we're going to go through all
- 1:25those differences, but let's start with why are we even
- 1:30having this conversation today? What?
- 1:32Well, we're seeing it everywhere in some form or fashion.
- 1:35We're seeing whimsy in home decor, clothing, shoes,
- 1:41advertising. It's all about whimsy.
- 1:43And I think what it is, is it's sparking joy.
- 1:46You know, when you see things that appeal to you, and even if
- 1:51it's just a color or a shape, you know, it sparks joy.
- 1:55It it brings a little happiness to your life.
- 1:57Yeah, exactly. I totally agree.
- 2:00And it's just been impossible to ignore.
- 2:03Like you're saying, we actually do a lot of traveling to buy
- 2:08furniture and accessories and see trends and it is just
- 2:13pervasive everywhere like. Whimsy is everywhere.
- 2:16High Point Market, we were seeing a ton of whimsy.
- 2:20They're definitely bought in. I was just in New York both last
- 2:25fall and this spring for different interior design
- 2:28occasions. We both went to the same store
- 2:30there we did, and we saw whimsy. 10 both times.
- 2:33Yeah, yeah. And yeah, whimsy was definitely
- 2:38pervasive there. And what is surprising to me is
- 2:43that it's at such a high level right now, like the highest.
- 2:48Because we need joy, we need happiness.
- 2:50We need things that spark happy. Exactly, but also the like high
- 2:56end fashion is really buying into whimsy, both in home and in
- 3:01furniture. But I think it.
- 3:02Starts there, it starts high end and then it.
- 3:05Most. Trends to the masses, yeah.
- 3:07Most usually a. Fashion, though it starts in
- 3:09fashion. That's.
- 3:10So true, yeah. But I think that there are a lot
- 3:13of really accessible ways to bring whimsy in, too.
- 3:16Right now I almost feel like maybe the culture is being
- 3:19shaped by the high end, but the mainstream, it's almost an equal
- 3:25opportunity for high end and mainstream as far as who can buy
- 3:31into it, because there are a lot of mainstream examples of
- 3:35whimsy. I just think how far we can push
- 3:39the envelope is being dictated by some of these high end
- 3:43brands. But definitely like the really
- 3:49like the Walmarts and the targets of the world have
- 3:52definitely bought into whimsy as well.
- 3:54So and the home good. Address at Walmart and I would
- 3:58say it's whimsy. It has like embroidered flowers
- 4:02all over it and it's just very playful.
- 4:04That's the other thing, Whimsy is playful, like different
- 4:07colors put together, which we saw in High Point.
- 4:10We saw some crazy color combos that were super cool.
- 4:15Yeah, that, that like worked well unexpectedly.
- 4:19Yeah, we saw like a periwinkle or lavenderish color mixed with
- 4:25a deep burgundy. I it just, it was so great
- 4:28together. Yeah, that cool.
- 4:30Blue and burgundy combo is really popular and like color
- 4:35combos is a great way to bring up whimsy too because.
- 4:37Very inexpensive. Like if you just want to paint a
- 4:39room and then, you know, use those colors together, you could
- 4:43even create like lines around the room or scallops around the
- 4:48room with a different color and incorporate two different colors
- 4:51together. Right.
- 4:51But having like a really fun color with like a more grounding
- 4:56color and more natural color is something I saw a lot and a way
- 5:00to kind of, yeah, it doesn't always.
- 5:01Have to be, you know, different types of colors.
- 5:04I mean, it could be, you know, soft neutrals, but done in a
- 5:09whimsical way or a whimsical pattern tainted on your wall.
- 5:13Totally, Yeah, yeah, the Chartreuses and the nature
- 5:16colors and the periwinkles and the Burgundies and the oranges.
- 5:21It was so fun. It was so So that was fun to see
- 5:25as far as color didn't. You feel energized after you
- 5:28left those spaces always, but in a good way.
- 5:31Not like good. So we got to get out of here.
- 5:34It was just like very energizing creatively.
- 5:37I just felt so, so wonderful after I left those spaces.
- 5:42It's almost giving us license to have a childlike sense of wonder
- 5:46in our everyday life for sure. Like still be our feet are on
- 5:51the ground, we're down to earth. Like getting the things done,
- 5:55being an adult. But in the midst of the chaos
- 5:59and the stress of our days and all the responsibilities we
- 6:01have, like there are things that make us smile and.
- 6:05Bring a little playfulness to the day.
- 6:07Exactly. Culture is giving us a license
- 6:09to do that. And a lot of these places we
- 6:12visited, I wanted to say too, are places that are really like
- 6:17the trend predictors like High Point Market or I went to the
- 6:22International Contemporary Furniture Fair and I saw.
- 6:27Some of the pictures from that it.
- 6:28Was really cool and and so we're seeing where trend is right now
- 6:33and it's all definitely there. The other thing that we pay
- 6:36attention to a lot is Pinterest. Funny enough I know for a lot of
- 6:40people it seems like Pinterest was back in the early 2000s or
- 6:44mid 2. Thousands.
- 6:46But it's having a huge resurgence.
- 6:48Yeah, it's having a huge resurgence as a search engine
- 6:51for younger demographics for sure that are trend setting and
- 6:57they what do. You find is is better to look at
- 6:59Instagram or Pinterest for those things.
- 7:02I think Pinterest is much more targeted toward getting
- 7:05inspiration. So if I'm like, give me
- 7:08whimsical spring ideas or like whimsical ideas for a spring
- 7:13party, you'll get a lot more back on Pinterest for sure.
- 7:17I think haphazardly you end up seeing cool things on Instagram,
- 7:22but it's harder to search for as a search engine.
- 7:25So I think that's where people are using Pinterest a lot is
- 7:29because they're like, I can have this board of inspiration I can
- 7:33just refer back to and it's just like a digital vision board,
- 7:36which is great. But anyway, a lot of younger
- 7:42generations are using it and it comes out with predictions every
- 7:46year as far as what they think are going to be the most
- 7:50trending things of the year. And so in 2026, they're
- 7:55predicting a lot of whimsical trends, which we'll get to later
- 7:58in the episode. But they're also their spring
- 8:02report was saying we're in our more joy, please era and like
- 8:05just really embracing that childlike sense of wonder, like
- 8:08what we were saying. And that's where kind of this
- 8:11idea is kicking off for me too. And they're giving examples of
- 8:15what they mean, like embracing, jumping into a pedal, you know,
- 8:19going outside when it's raining without like, your rain jacket,
- 8:22like mismatched manicures, things like that.
- 8:28So. Do you think, OK, we're saying
- 8:32whimsy is a trend, but truly throughout history there's
- 8:36always been whimsy. It just seems to be so prevalent
- 8:41right now. It's embraced right now for
- 8:44sure. So but that is a good question.
- 8:47I'm not sure, like if whimsy would be considered a trend as
- 8:53much as it's just a lifestyle and sometimes people embrace it
- 9:00more than others, or sometimes we embrace it more in culture
- 9:02than others. Like sometimes it's a time to be
- 9:06really just like we're coming out bold and we're being the
- 9:10biggest version of ourselves, which is great.
- 9:12But like, if we take ourselves too seriously, that can be sad
- 9:17sometimes it can be overwhelming, you know, like to
- 9:22take yourself too seriously. And so just having those little
- 9:25reminders. Maybe we've just taken ourselves
- 9:27too seriously for a long time, and now it's just like, OK,
- 9:32let's relax, let's wear shoes with lettuce on them, Yeah, you
- 9:35know. Speaking of which, yeah, you
- 9:38were showing me that example of the lettuce shoes.
- 9:41From I love those. Oh my gosh, I don't know where
- 9:45I'd wear them. Where would you?
- 9:46Wear these. I feel like I would need to be
- 9:49in like London or New York or or Paris or somewhere that's like
- 9:53big fashion to wear those. And I know that it may not be
- 9:59practical, but I don't think in that way.
- 10:02I'm just like I'm make it. Practical.
- 10:04Yeah. Maybe I'll just sit up my desk
- 10:06with these fun little lettuce shoes on.
- 10:08Yeah, for sure. I'd love those.
- 10:10They're meant to be seen, that's for sure.
- 10:12For. Sure.
- 10:13And they have a little snail. On I know a little snail walking
- 10:16through the lettuce. Where else do you find whimsy in
- 10:20life? Oh, I find whimsy in a lot of
- 10:23things. You know, in nature, even just
- 10:26birds, I think birds are so funny sometimes.
- 10:30Me too. I'm they can be whimsical.
- 10:33There are the these Blue Jays that are just constantly flying
- 10:37around my house and they just, to me, they're whimsical.
- 10:40Yeah. Yeah, they can be loud too.
- 10:43Yeah, they like have the funniest cause herpes.
- 10:48What does that say on Jess? I, I don't know, it might get a
- 10:51little loud in here if I try 'cause they're loud.
- 10:54Yeah, they're like. Even squirrels.
- 10:58I mean, if you're talking. About animals.
- 11:00They are still fluffy tail. I know the big you know how
- 11:05whimsical is that? So we are seeing whimsy in
- 11:08nature. We're seeing it all around us.
- 11:10We. Really, it's always been around
- 11:12us. I find whimsy a.
- 11:13Giraffe. Think of them big long necks.
- 11:16That's the most whimsical thing. For an you know what nature.
- 11:19Wants us to smile. I find whimsy in birds too.
- 11:25My mom's chickens, she'll put an apple pinata in the chicken coop
- 11:29because they need, they need stimulation.
- 11:32They get bored in there. So it's like 2 apples that are
- 11:36dangling from a string on like a stick and they're all pack at it
- 11:41and it's just the funniest thing.
- 11:43You should post that. I know I I feel a lot of fun,
- 11:47but that you can't be like having a serious time and watch
- 11:51that. It just makes you smile.
- 11:54And then flowers always make me feel whimsical and creative.
- 12:00There's different kinds of whimsy too.
- 12:02So like I feel creative with flowers because I get to arrange
- 12:06them in different ways in my house.
- 12:08Like I just found this fun hack for my Trader Joe's candles
- 12:12where I try and put them in a different container or like
- 12:18antique dish or something to make it look a little bit more
- 12:21elevated. But there was space around the
- 12:23candle, like between the dish and the candle and so.
- 12:27Are you just talking about a plain pillar candle or?
- 12:30No, like a just like a little like short candle that you would
- 12:34burn and it's scent to have there.
- 12:37Yeah, but it's it's in a tin and it says like the name of the
- 12:41scent. And so instead of featuring the
- 12:43tin, I'm like, let's elevate this because I love my Trader
- 12:46Joe's candles. And so I put greenery from a
- 12:50flower arrangement I had around the candle and then put water in
- 12:55the container. So it's just like this living
- 12:59greenery around the candle in this little container.
- 13:02And so, and it made me feel so creative.
- 13:05And every time I look at it, I feel like I'm in a creative
- 13:07space. So kind of like, I don't know,
- 13:11having fun with nature and just natural things.
- 13:16Oh goodness, I I am the same way.
- 13:18I mean, little things like that just bring me joy too.
- 13:21And I'm so glad that, you know, I'm made that way, right?
- 13:26That you can find joy in just the simplest things.
- 13:30It makes you have a better life, I think for sure.
- 13:33For sure. You know, one of the places I've
- 13:35seen whimsy throughout my life that I've always been enamored
- 13:38with is anthropology's window displays.
- 13:42That's another place where I find.
- 13:44Have you followed the one the girl that does all of their
- 13:48wins? Started sewing her yesterday.
- 13:50She's. Amazing.
- 13:51Like she makes things out of like nothing.
- 13:54I want to be your friend. I want to have your job some
- 13:57days. But yeah, I mean, like the, I
- 14:00think the first one that really spoke most to me was the
- 14:03marshmallows that look, it looks like snow for it was a winter
- 14:08display. And I think in art school I did
- 14:10something to kind of copy that a little bit or I played off of it
- 14:13with marshmallows are my favorite thing.
- 14:16They're the most whimsical. They're just like fluffy and
- 14:19they're just happy. Oh my gosh, they're so fun to
- 14:21eat. Marshmallows are so whimsical.
- 14:25And for those who are vegan, they actually make marshmallows
- 14:29that are vegan, so. That's good to know.
- 14:32Yeah, so you don't. I've seen them at health food
- 14:34stores. Or Whole Foods has them.
- 14:37What are those called? I forgot the name, we'll have to
- 14:39find them. Something something like that.
- 14:42They're totally vegan. Well, that's cool.
- 14:44So everybody can enjoy the marshmallow marshmallow.
- 14:46But the other thing is they, they just found things in nature
- 14:51and repurposed. They're not in looser.
- 14:53No, not in nature. They found things that were
- 14:56cluttering nature like water bottles and or, or, or things
- 15:01that were just already there. Found objects like water bottles
- 15:07or plastic bags or paper or old book pages where the books were
- 15:13falling apart. And the ostriches.
- 15:15Yeah, and they and they repurposed it into different
- 15:20things, whether it was like in store displays or window
- 15:23displays. But yeah, the the recycled water
- 15:26bottle flowers was definitely a hit.
- 15:29And yeah, but that and then sacks also did.
- 15:34They weren't as like recycled or upcycled as anthropology, but it
- 15:39was also very whimsical with I. Love the little.
- 15:44Yeah, just to really convey summer, and this is probably in
- 15:49New York, but. And the umbrellas, they're just
- 15:54so cute. We saw this in Paris, like this
- 15:56whole alleyway filled with umbrellas.
- 15:58They're. So whimsical.
- 16:00They're the most whimsical things.
- 16:01So it's been around and I think there's brands that are just
- 16:05really winning that are embracing whimsy and have been
- 16:11for a long time. And I guess maybe we haven't put
- 16:13our finger on why we love them so much, but.
- 16:17You know why? Why?
- 16:18It's because somebody said yes, yeah, do it.
- 16:21Yes, make a difference. You know difference.
- 16:24Do something fun. We.
- 16:25Trust the artist. Yeah, yeah, just go do your
- 16:28thing. I totally agree and.
- 16:31Creative people should just do their thing, you know, Just let
- 16:36them do it. I think that happens a lot where
- 16:39people have a really good idea and then it gets corralled in by
- 16:42like the numbers and the shareholders, and then it gets
- 16:45watered down. And I think they're definitely
- 16:49asked to be parameters. But I really like when companies
- 16:53just say yes to creativity and they're not like, well, what's
- 16:56the cost of these found objects and how is it going to benefit?
- 17:02That gal that does all of those designs, her budget is really
- 17:07low. Yeah.
- 17:08I mean, plastic water bottle bottles, marshmallows.
- 17:11I mean, it's more about how you can be creative.
- 17:14Exactly. And not spend a ton of money.
- 17:17But they're not analyzing like well, if we're selling a high
- 17:21end. Product should we be able
- 17:22Thousand marshmallows Yeah, in this window.
- 17:25Why are we using marshmallows to sell a high end product?
- 17:29You know, and I've just seen so many it's.
- 17:31Cool. It's fun, it makes people happy
- 17:33at. Any price point?
- 17:35Yeah, so, but yeah, those brands are definitely winning and it's
- 17:39cool to see them embrace whimsy. So yeah, I feel like we've
- 17:45talked a lot about how whimsy is bringing us joy, how it's like,
- 17:51you know, just the childlike wonder.
- 17:55But let's define define what whimsy is kind of as far as
- 18:00interior design and like, yeah, what what would you say
- 18:06describes whimsy well from an interior design standpoint?
- 18:10I mean things that that make you smile, things that bring joy,
- 18:14spark joy, make you happy. Like you said, childlike
- 18:20attitude towards it. You know, years ago.
- 18:24I'll just tell you something I did in my home many, many years
- 18:27ago. I found this giant like Cut out
- 18:32Lion and he has a top hat and a cane and he's smoking a cigar.
- 18:37That's probably not a good thing, but.
- 18:39He's a lion. He's a lion and he's in like a
- 18:42coattails type jacket and little britches and fun little shoes.
- 18:47Yeah. And you just hang him on the
- 18:49wall. Yeah.
- 18:50And he's been in my family room forever now.
- 18:53And every to this day, when I see him, it brings joy.
- 18:57And I would say that's very whimsical.
- 18:59I mean, who has a lion on the wall?
- 19:01But I mean, some people might have a real life.
- 19:05But anyway, just things that bring you joy and spark
- 19:08happiness, yeah. Yeah, I can't talk amidst the,
- 19:16you know, beautiful design. You need to just have a
- 19:19reminder. Like, we're not taking ourselves
- 19:21too seriously, though, right? Exactly.
- 19:24But I think a lot of people confuse it.
- 19:27Like how is one of our Co workers asked when we were
- 19:30talking about this episode yesterday?
- 19:32Like how is whimsy different than eclectic interior design?
- 19:37I think eclectic could be whimsical.
- 19:39Exactly. Yeah, Eclectic's more just about
- 19:42gathering different things that you love and, you know, putting
- 19:45those things together. But I think whimsy could be that
- 19:47as well. Yeah, I think eclectic is like a
- 19:51mix of different styles, whereas whimsy is like a principle that
- 19:56could apply to any style. Yeah, I guess you're right.
- 20:02Take this lamp behind me, for example.
- 20:04To me that's whimsical, you know, And it's it's in this room
- 20:08with a traditional style wallpaper and Plaid.
- 20:12So it's mixed in. It's just fun.
- 20:13It's happy. Yeah, exactly.
- 20:16And like maximalism and whimsy get confused because maximalism
- 20:23is so like, I don't it's like really investing the whole room
- 20:31into a style, I would say, and going all out with something.
- 20:35And you could do that with whimsy.
- 20:36You could have a. Whimsy go zero to 100 or you
- 20:40could go zero to 10. It's just what percentage of
- 20:44that do you want. So, for example, sorry to
- 20:46interrupt, but for example, we just did a room at at a home in
- 20:52Colorado Springs and in in the bedroom, this was like a teen
- 20:57room. We did a bed that had that faux
- 21:00fur. The whole bed is faux fur.
- 21:02So I call that whimsical. And then we did A and we could
- 21:08probably add these at the end to the show notes so people know
- 21:11what we're talking about and show a picture of it.
- 21:13But we also did a mirror with herbs all the way around it or
- 21:18like a nice scallopy look. Squiggle, squiggle not.
- 21:22Scallop. Yeah, that's a whimsical word.
- 21:25And then these pieces of art above the bed that light up.
- 21:30Yeah. And then the bedding was pretty
- 21:33neutral. But then we put in this other
- 21:36bedding that had a simple white background with little mushrooms
- 21:40on it. And then there's a little
- 21:41mushroom pillow. All these things you can find in
- 21:43our store. But that in itself was very
- 21:47whimsical. But the whole room wasn't a
- 21:50maximalist, you know, whimsical look.
- 21:54It was just arts and pieces in the room.
- 21:57Yeah. So it just depends on how much
- 22:00you want to do or if you just want to do a little bit.
- 22:02Yeah, yeah. And I think people think of
- 22:05whimsy and they think the whole room is going to look like Alice
- 22:09in Wonderland or it's going to be very.
- 22:11If you want it to. If you wanted to, if that's your
- 22:13version of whimsy or like I have friends that got these adorable
- 22:17little mushroom outdoor light features that are solar powered
- 22:23and they're like nice blown glass and they're colorful and
- 22:26they're pretty. Can you show us those?
- 22:27Yeah, we need a picture. I gotta see.
- 22:29Them, I mean, they're from I love.
- 22:30Mushrooms. Yeah.
- 22:31And so and those are great, but but I think a lot of people
- 22:35think to have whimsy, it has to be that like mushrooms, frog,
- 22:40whimsical fairy forest, you know, fairy land it.
- 22:46And it doesn't always have to be that way.
- 22:48It can be whatever brings you joy and makes you laugh.
- 22:51Yeah, yeah. Whatever you find that you're,
- 22:54you know, want to add to your room, that just sparks joy.
- 22:57Yeah, exactly. So I feel like that is helpful
- 23:02for people to just remember, like it can be very personal.
- 23:06Personal as far as what kind of whimsy you bring in.
- 23:12Whimsy could be like we were talking about earlier in paint.
- 23:15It could be color combinations, or it could be a color.
- 23:18You know that feels whimsical, right?
- 23:21Yeah, so it doesn't just have to depend on novelty items like,
- 23:27you know, a duck wearing rain boots piece of art or something.
- 23:33It could be. Might be a little more kitschy,
- 23:35yeah, but. Or.
- 23:36What's the difference between kitschy and whimsy, do you
- 23:39think? Well, some people might disagree
- 23:41with this, but I'll just tell you my opinion, my opinion only.
- 23:45But I feel like kitschy and it's definitely a thing, but it's
- 23:49it's a little more garish. It's a little bit more just
- 23:54think dogs playing poker like that's kitschy.
- 23:57So that could be a little garish, right?
- 24:01Or it could be really cool. It depends on how you display
- 24:04that. So I would say that kitschy is
- 24:08more mass produced. More things like dogs playing
- 24:13poker or little cherubs doing silly things versus whimsical.
- 24:19That's more, I guess they both make you smile.
- 24:23So yeah, they both could be a little whimsical.
- 24:26Yeah, but you can achieve a room with just paint that looks
- 24:32whimsical, I think. Yeah, like there's murals.
- 24:35I think there was an example we saw of somebody that just
- 24:39painted their walls like a Lily pad lake.
- 24:43Oh yeah. And for sure, Yeah.
- 24:45And I like with Koi. I think what takes this to the
- 24:48next level are the Lily pads on the sea ceiling.
- 24:52Like they didn't forget about the 5th wall and it just most
- 24:57people are probably like why would I paint something on my
- 25:00ceiling? Well, look at it, it's so fun.
- 25:04Because it doesn't if if you leave the ceiling white, it
- 25:07interrupts the illusion. Yeah, and and the space you're
- 25:11trying to create. Yeah, here you're you're in the
- 25:15water, looking up at the Lily pads.
- 25:18Yeah. That's what the fish see.
- 25:20So it's not just like a garish or whimsical accessory
- 25:25necessarily. Like there's so many different
- 25:27ways to be whimsy and there's a lot of ways to be whimsical
- 25:33without looking chaotic. Like if we look at a couple of
- 25:37the other room examples we have, there's a lot of the wall
- 25:44hangings, but they all go together and there's like a
- 25:48theory behind it. Like I think it's the
- 25:53differences in size coming together.
- 25:55If you have like a lot of accessories and wall hangings,
- 26:00having them different size really helps in order to make it
- 26:04not look as cluttered. So I'm looking at this room.
- 26:07I'm I'm definitely seeing what you're talking about.
- 26:10Yeah. I'm seeing the whimsy in that
- 26:13pink color on the wall and that it goes up to the ceiling.
- 26:17I'm seeing Whimsy and the orange chair with the little fluffy,
- 26:23fluffy pillow and the squiggles in the rug.
- 26:28Yeah, it's just that it's a fun room.
- 26:30Yeah. But how could you not be happy
- 26:32when you walk in there? Exactly.
- 26:34But there's accents of traditional.
- 26:36It's a bedroom with just a gallery wall full of not just
- 26:41photos but like a Candelabra and a band hanging parts and pieces.
- 26:46Yeah, and there's definitely like a traditional bedspread.
- 26:52But it does look modern I think because of the color drenching
- 26:56of the wall and the painting of the ceiling I think.
- 26:59I think that little striped pillow brings some whimsy to the
- 27:02room as well with the ruffle on it.
- 27:04The one in the bed, Yeah, yeah, it's, it's definitely more like
- 27:07cottage whimsy, which I feel like you could have a whimsical
- 27:12cottage core style, but they are like, like cottage core isn't
- 27:16necessarily inherently whimsy. It has to include things that
- 27:19make you smile. Yeah.
- 27:25Yeah. And then, you know, I think
- 27:28there are a lot of ways to make things look whimsical without
- 27:31chaotic. Like if you look at, we're
- 27:33looking at a dresser that has stripes and it's like red and
- 27:37pink stripes or like tiling in a bathroom that's checkerboard or
- 27:43WAVY. I like this example of whimsy
- 27:48because if somebody is listening and they're like, OK, how can I
- 27:51incorporate whimsy right away in my home?
- 27:54Paint for sure, but also check stripes and squiggles.
- 28:00I mean that's, I mean think those things because that's
- 28:02usually what's found in whimsy. Exactly.
- 28:04And it doesn't have to be on your walls.
- 28:06And these examples, it's like somebody painted furniture.
- 28:08Tile like this little that way coffee.
- 28:11But it, yeah, it could be an accessory or it could be like a
- 28:15painting that is hung above the dresser is of a man with a giant
- 28:20pink cowboy hat and he's wearing a blue suit.
- 28:24And that man, he does not take himself too seriously.
- 28:26I don't know that. And he's not garish, but he is
- 28:29whimsical. He he looks refined or just like
- 28:34the pink tulips. Like have pink tulips in a, in a
- 28:38green vase instead of just white tulips in a vase.
- 28:41In a glass vase. Yeah.
- 28:43Or, or glass, Yeah. And then in kitchens.
- 28:46Even. And if you have a glass vase and
- 28:47you're like, I'm not going to go out and buy one, just spray
- 28:50paint it. Yeah.
- 28:52You can do wonders. It really can.
- 28:54Yeah, you could even put little squiggles on your glass vase and
- 28:58spray paint it. I love this.
- 29:00Yes, I love that paint kitchen with red tile and pink walls and
- 29:05it's. In.
- 29:07Yes, pink. Pink is very wet.
- 29:09We're seeing pink. A lot lately.
- 29:11Pink is fun and it's light and like, I don't know, it's.
- 29:15Playful. It is.
- 29:17It's the most playful color. It and it's not even truly like
- 29:21on the light spectrum of color, you know, pink is it's, it's
- 29:27it's own thing. Mm hmm.
- 29:29And there's so many different versions of it, and you can't be
- 29:32like, like, I wouldn't come into work and fire somebody wearing
- 29:36pink. What are you saying, Jessa?
- 29:40You have Pink on today. I know, but I just don't think
- 29:42people. I think it's just too fun and.
- 29:45Playful like it really is. You're fired like it's not.
- 29:50People are going to come in the next day, everyone.
- 29:52You won't be. Fired.
- 29:54They're going to come in the next day because you're not
- 29:57going to. They're going to be like, you're
- 29:58so fun, you know well. Getting fired is not whimsy.
- 30:02Definitely, which is why I think pink, like pink is whimsy.
- 30:07And so it's just it's happy. And if you paint a wall pink, I
- 30:11feel like it's fun or just have the accessories or pop of pink
- 30:16is a great way to bring whimsy in.
- 30:18But this kitchen looks like it's actually decorated for
- 30:21Christmas. So that's something else I
- 30:23wanted to point out. There's the stocking and there's
- 30:26like Snowflake. Oh yeah, I do see the.
- 30:29Garlands, but it's, it's subtle, but it's festive and whimsy can
- 30:34come in, not just in the spring. Like, I think people think of
- 30:37whimsy and they think of spring flowers, and it can be.
- 30:41We'll look at, we'll look at the hardware on the cabinets.
- 30:46Very whimsical. Yeah, there's quickly easy way
- 30:49if you want to change out your hardware on your cabinets to
- 30:52create some whimsy. Yeah, I I think you're right.
- 30:55These ones are a little elevated 'cause they're gold and like a
- 31:00bar. And so from far away you can't
- 31:02really see that they're, but when you look close up, they're
- 31:05squiggly. So things that are like elevated
- 31:09with a little like chuckle. To them little chuckle.
- 31:13Yeah, I like the glass faces. Yeah, yeah, they are very fun.
- 31:17They're like green and pink and there's like orb stoppers in the
- 31:22top, so fun. So open shelving can be a great
- 31:27way to bring in whimsy too, if you have it.
- 31:29Do you still like open shelving? I do.
- 31:31You do? Yeah.
- 31:32Because like, you can display all of the things you collected.
- 31:36And I am an expert collector. I'm an expert gatherer.
- 31:41Is that I would say. So I want to show off the things
- 31:44that I gathered, like cute little graphics or little crafts
- 31:50or beans in a jar, I don't know. Just all of those things bring
- 31:55joy. Yes, they do.
- 31:57You can bring out the things that bring you joy a little bit
- 31:59more. And these people also brought a
- 32:02curtain into their kitchen under the sink.
- 32:07There's a lot of sinks that maybe they didn't come with a
- 32:11cabinet, or maybe you take a cabinet out and you just put a.
- 32:13Curtain on that little sheared curtain.
- 32:16I think soft shapes and textures can definitely add whimsy as
- 32:24well. Whether it be curvy like you're
- 32:26saying with the squiggly lines or like fabrics definitely bring
- 32:32in some whimsy. Be an easy way to add a little
- 32:35bit in your room. Like think of the bucket hat.
- 32:39That hat people were are wearing bucket hats a lot now and that's
- 32:43definitely whimsical. I gotta see this bucket it.
- 32:45Looks like a bell on somebody's head and it's just, it's not a
- 32:49pointy hat at all. It's the opposite of a pointy
- 32:51hat. It's like curvy and it's relaxed
- 32:54and it's hot. Some of them are fluffy.
- 32:56I kind of want a fluffy bucket hat anyway, but I think that
- 33:01would definitely bring whimsy. But yeah, and there's a lot of
- 33:05interior designers that have been incorporating whimsy to
- 33:09throughout history. So we'll look at a couple.
- 33:15I think it's been iterated a lot of different ways, but it's been
- 33:20around like you're saying. We just haven't fully like
- 33:25acknowledged it for a while maybe or not everybody.
- 33:28We haven't bought in mainstream like we are right now.
- 33:32They were, maybe. We just needed more joy in our
- 33:36lives. Yeah.
- 33:37And this is the way to to add that we need.
- 33:40Visual reminders of the joy in our lives, not just on our
- 33:43phones. We need visual reminders in our
- 33:46space and in what we wear. Yes.
- 33:50So yeah, I one of the my favorites is I'm totally
- 33:58blanking because. Are you thinking of Dorothy
- 33:59Draper? Well, Dorothy Draper's great,
- 34:02but I you know, when you try and think of somebody's name, it
- 34:05usually doesn't come to you on the spot, so.
- 34:07So Dorothy Draper is quite the whimsy.
- 34:11I mean, look at this bedroom below with the stripes on the
- 34:14ceiling. It looks like a little circus.
- 34:16I love that one day I'm gonna paint stripes on my ceiling.
- 34:19Right. I think why am I waiting?
- 34:21And I just think it's cool that like it's saying 1889 to 1969
- 34:27was either was that her lifespan?
- 34:30OK, that was when she lived, but she was alive during a time that
- 34:35is very, you know, people were maybe a little bit more serious
- 34:39mainstream. And so this was more specific or
- 34:44niche of a style, but she wasn't afraid to be herself and embrace
- 34:52with. She called.
- 34:53Yeah. Yeah, she brought whimsy
- 34:55everywhere. Yeah, what I like too about her
- 34:59designs is everything was exaggerated.
- 35:03It felt like it was exaggerated and like florals and stripes
- 35:07together. And like, if you look at this
- 35:09one picture from the green, I think that's the Greenbrier,
- 35:11which is in White Sulphur Springs, WV.
- 35:15Very cool. But look how small the sofa
- 35:18looks with the. Stripes on the wall, but it's
- 35:21almost intentional. It's totally intentional.
- 35:23Yeah, she wanted the furniture to look small hair to the rest
- 35:27of the room. Or she just wanted this to be
- 35:30very exaggerated. And I don't know if that was a
- 35:32Dorothy Draper design there because Carlton Varney took over
- 35:39for Dorothy Draper. So he.
- 35:40Definitely has influence. Oh, sure, sure.
- 35:43And to this day, I mean, the Greenbrier is very much Carlton
- 35:46Barney. Dorothy Draper.
- 35:48Yeah, the collab, yes, we took over the Dorothy Draper company,
- 35:54but it's very much her style and his style of these stripes and
- 35:59pattern mixes. OK, Yeah.
- 36:01Yeah, and here I, I feel like her whimsy is a lot more of a
- 36:06similar to whimsy like she's going on in here.
- 36:09Oh yeah, it's, it's stunning. And if you were, imagine if you
- 36:13were being presented with this and you're seeing like, look at
- 36:18the carpet with the pattern on the sofa with the stripes and
- 36:22then this big clock and somebody had to say yes to that.
- 36:27They're like, OK, we don't understand it, but we know it's
- 36:30going to be great. Just go do it.
- 36:31Either they were like let the designer do the designer thing
- 36:35or they were also very eccentric hotel or business owner or
- 36:39homeowner. But either way it came out
- 36:42great. So that's kind of fun to think
- 36:44about. There's also Alessandro Medina,
- 36:48I think is his name, Medini Medini.
- 36:51And he was also a pioneer of whimsy.
- 36:55It's it's a different type of whimsy, but he definitely
- 36:59brought joy into his spaces. We're seeing again the pink
- 37:04walls and floors and like. I love the little.
- 37:09Is that a bookcase? Little?
- 37:10Yeah. Around gold, like yellow gold
- 37:15bookcase that's looks like an egg.
- 37:18And is that is that a painting above the door to look like a
- 37:22window? It might be.
- 37:24Let's just say. Yes, because I think that is a
- 37:28really cool move. Like a.
- 37:30Really. Cool illusion.
- 37:32If you don't have a window above your door and you want to feel
- 37:35like you have more windows in your space, you can manufacture
- 37:38them with a canvas. Or if you're in an office
- 37:42building and you don't have a window to the outside, there's
- 37:46things you can do to make it feel like the outdoors.
- 37:48You could do something like that.
- 37:50Yeah, canvas blue and hang it there.
- 37:54You go somewhere where a window should be and put a border
- 37:57around it. But yeah, then it looks like
- 38:00there's a a gallery space where there's just a giant yellow man
- 38:05and pixelated chair that would be like a royal throne look.
- 38:12So yeah, just. And he, I mean he.
- 38:14Doesn't take his self too seriously.
- 38:16Look at him. Yeah, I mean, he's dressed in a
- 38:18suit, but he's sitting in a bright orange chair.
- 38:21So I love high, low. I do know I love.
- 38:25Where the contrast the push pull.
- 38:28Yeah, where you can see like this should be taken seriously
- 38:33in the sense that like it's elevated and it's, you know, it,
- 38:39people have it together, but they're intentionally having
- 38:42fun, you know? And then my other favorite is
- 38:48Jonathan Adler, and he's very current, so there's some
- 38:53pictures of his spaces that he's done if you want to tune into
- 38:58the video portion. But if not, it's just a lot of
- 39:04bright colors in the paint in a lot of cases, or white paint and
- 39:09then bringing in bright colors in the furniture like the.
- 39:13Bedroom picture. That would be, you know, if
- 39:17somebody didn't want a lot of bright colors in the room and
- 39:20wanted a pretty neutral background.
- 39:22That's a great example of that. Like just the.
- 39:26Pop of colors, the art and the two chairs.
- 39:29A couple great examples there and I think there's a couple,
- 39:35you know, like residential projects, but then also a couple
- 39:39like spaces that are hotels or restaurants included in here.
- 39:44But it seems like the client wanted whimsy, but they didn't
- 39:49always want to go like crazy all in.
- 39:52And so I think there's a lot of great examples of how to bring
- 39:56whimsy into a balanced space or bring whimsy into a space in a
- 40:01balanced way where it's there. But like the top left photo is a
- 40:05mid century modern living room but choices to paint.
- 40:10The fireplace orange because it's already a huge feature or
- 40:15have. It brightens up the corner.
- 40:17It takes a very dull plant. I mean, that's a pretty simple
- 40:20room. Yeah.
- 40:21Is that ship lap on the wall? Looks like it, yeah.
- 40:24White Ship lap. Yeah.
- 40:25So that's a pretty basic room. Yeah, but he made it non basic.
- 40:30I know he did. And there's nothing basic about
- 40:33it, actually, once he got through with.
- 40:35It and the major artwork is of I think it's like a vintage photo
- 40:39of a woman kite surfing it looks like she's got a parachute
- 40:45behind her oh OK yeah and then also there's a kite surfer in
- 40:49the bedroom art so something about that we.
- 40:54Should look that up. Wonder why that is?
- 40:55Surfer, what is that? Paragliding paragliders.
- 40:59Sorry with the parachute. And then there's a room that
- 41:04looks like a, you know, traditional drawing room, but
- 41:07there's a big chandelier that looks like a ship.
- 41:11It's like fully the crystal ship, The crystal ship, So many
- 41:15people. Knocked that off.
- 41:17Really. Yeah, I'm obsessed with it.
- 41:19I saw it and I was like, we got to feature that.
- 41:22But then there's like a more maximalist room that has bright
- 41:26teal walls, but then everything else in there is a little bit
- 41:29more neutral toned. Like the furniture, the couch is
- 41:33white, the chairs are. They're a very whimsical.
- 41:36Shape, but there's little squiggles on the side.
- 41:39Yeah, but they're like a rattan or like wooden, bendy wooden
- 41:45material that's. Just like a rayon or something.
- 41:49Yeah, and the little egg. Swinging egg.
- 41:52Chair so they're fun shapes, but they're neutral colors to play
- 41:56off of the extremely bright teal wall.
- 42:00So that's just it's a he's a great modern example of how to
- 42:04balance whimsy in a space where it's it looks really tasteful.
- 42:10Looks great. You have it.
- 42:12Yeah. So we're let's get back into
- 42:16where we're seeing whimsy in kind of like our travels and our
- 42:21day-to-day lives and when we're shopping.
- 42:26Now that we've kind of seen it in the past, what does it look
- 42:29like in 2026? I want to bring it to people.
- 42:32And I think the examples we just looked at are a good example of
- 42:39modern whimsy. But I was, well, we were both at
- 42:44High Point Market recently and we saw whimsy everywhere we did
- 42:49and we saw it just in little trinkets like we saw these
- 42:54houses that. 1st. They were so cute.
- 42:58We, we ended up having like this whimsical adventure where we
- 43:02walked into this space kind of through the back and we didn't
- 43:05know what we were going to find and.
- 43:06Not only did we find whimsical things, the whole adventure was
- 43:11whimsical. We made it a whimsical
- 43:13adventure. Yeah, that was nuts.
- 43:15Yeah, We went through what we were.
- 43:18I don't even know how we got in there.
- 43:19I think we went through like a a back dock or something.
- 43:23Yeah, like a loading dock through this door.
- 43:26Yeah, you were. And then we headed that
- 43:28operation. But I didn't know where I was
- 43:30going. Yeah.
- 43:32And then we ended up like seeing all of these amazing little
- 43:36booths. And then we turned a corner and
- 43:40it was this super cool, like coffee bar or something.
- 43:46It was just. Whimsical, crafty space.
- 43:48It was in this building, I think it was like the 313 building or
- 43:52something. And it was just like, everything
- 43:55was so whimsical. Yeah, those little houses that
- 43:58were painted fun colors and they were like a key holder, but they
- 44:02looked like vintage little houses.
- 44:04And then I'm trying to think of some other good examples, just
- 44:08like floral arrangements that people did were so whimsical.
- 44:13Like there was that place that we went and they had flowers and
- 44:17the tea cups. Oh yes, I remember that.
- 44:19That was like a leather company. Yeah, out of the.
- 44:22Fabric company. Yeah, what was that called?
- 44:26I have to look that up. I think it was like eastern
- 44:29accent. It's the one with kites.
- 44:31Yeah, Eastern accents was. No, sorry, Jess wasn't.
- 44:36Eastern asks. Oh, I know what you're talking
- 44:38about. Eastern Accents was the bedding
- 44:41company. I thought you were talking about
- 44:43the place with the kites. Oh.
- 44:45Well, that that. They had some cool stuff too.
- 44:47Yeah, so the Kite Place it was, yeah, that high end leather
- 44:51company, super high end leather, but they're showcasing leather
- 44:55in pink and like fun colors. And they were.
- 44:57Like the finish on it was so different.
- 45:01It was super soft. It was almost a little bit
- 45:03shiny, but in a good way, not cheesy.
- 45:06Yeah, but they mixed that with like fluffy either fabrics or
- 45:12yeah, they just mixed it with. Fluffy.
- 45:13They took themselves too seriously.
- 45:15They did not take themselves too seriously.
- 45:18And then I was like, oh, I love kite display.
- 45:20And they're like, yeah, we just had extra leather from what we
- 45:23were making and we were like, let's make them into kites.
- 45:26And I think that decision on a high end level really signifies
- 45:31where we're at with whimsy. We're seeing a lot of animals
- 45:36kind of represented throughout. Whimsical animals.
- 45:42Prints so tigers repeated kind of like as an icon as.
- 45:48Not your typical tiger. Yeah, like the tiger would be
- 45:51like this little tiger. Yeah, like it's, it's an
- 45:53abstract. It's like a tiger.
- 45:56And it's got like elevated colors like terracotta and brown
- 46:01and tan. Playful.
- 46:03It's a playful tiger, and it's a pattern.
- 46:06Not a mean one with the teeth, right?
- 46:08Yeah, and then people are really like that dog pillow kills me.
- 46:15I feel like people are showing photos of either their dogs or
- 46:21other dogs or cats just doing things that they don't normally
- 46:26do or depicted kind of in an abstract way.
- 46:31And this is just like a very regal Cavalier Charles King
- 46:35spaniel or whatever they're called if.
- 46:37You have like little fringe on his neck, He.
- 46:39Does it's like 3D fringe? I don't remember this picture,
- 46:44was that upmarket? Yeah, was that worlds away?
- 46:47Oh, I like that showroom. Yeah, they're very whimsical.
- 46:51Let's. Talk real quick about these
- 46:53florals that's at Eastern Accents.
- 46:56So what I loved about it is it was collected little old China
- 47:03tea cups and saucers and they were all mix and match.
- 47:07They weren't matching. No, not at all.
- 47:10But they brought a cohesive feel to it with the floral colors.
- 47:16And this is an amazing way to do a display on your table without
- 47:21spending a lot of money. Yeah.
- 47:23You could go to a thrift store and get China or in.
- 47:27Your favorite store, Trader Joe's for flowers and make some
- 47:31arrangements. 100%. Such a great idea.
- 47:37Trader Joe's or you could even like forage some things in your
- 47:40yard, like do you have a flower that popped up that there's like
- 47:44lilacs or or whatever seasonal irises you?
- 47:48Could roses right now? Yeah, roses are great.
- 47:52So you could totally just do that in an inexpensive way and
- 47:58then bringing in like a whimsical table runner is really
- 48:02fun. It looks like it's almost like
- 48:04quilted patchwork table runner. Yeah, that was a beautiful
- 48:08space. Yeah, they did a good job.
- 48:10Definitely granny chic. We're seeing that playing and a
- 48:14whimsy and and cottage. But I feel like like China, like
- 48:18this isn't very gramma anymore. It's like elevated fun.
- 48:24Sprightly, I mean delight. If you're holding that, I mean,
- 48:27think how special it feels to hold this beautiful little
- 48:31teacup. Yeah, it's, yeah, it's, I think
- 48:34I was saying this recently, the quality of glassware, I feel
- 48:39like I can tell by the thinness of it.
- 48:41The thinner, the more high end it is.
- 48:44And this is definitely like thinner thin, but yeah, so I
- 48:49feel. Like China, right?
- 48:50Yeah. It's quality, but you can find
- 48:53like more casual China too, and it still looks great.
- 48:59And then yeah, just like photos like this.
- 49:03Yes, they're great because it's like antique photos, but they
- 49:07have fun frames that are just bright and colorful and the
- 49:14antique photos are redone too to look more bright and colorful.
- 49:18And there's so many ceramics is the other thing that's fun that.
- 49:22Was a fun space too. Ceramics are having a crazy time
- 49:27right now. Ceramicists are having the most
- 49:29fun, I think, out of almost all the artists because, yeah,
- 49:36they're just fun things. And then the other things I was
- 49:39going to say is whimsy doesn't have to just be things you see.
- 49:42It can be like things you hear. So I like that sea glass.
- 49:48There was a sea glass wind time, and they're like, we sourced all
- 49:52the sea glass or we made it for the sound to sound just that
- 49:56perfect little time. And it was so whimsical.
- 50:02And then, yeah, this is another great example of ceramics being
- 50:06whimsical. This is actually a mix, as a
- 50:08side note, between High Point and that store that we both went
- 50:12to in, yeah, New York for Tom. I have to have those pancakes.
- 50:16Yeah. I love those the.
- 50:17Pancakes with syrups. It's just a tchotchke, but it is
- 50:23fun. And then there's the egg fried
- 50:26egg with the peas. Food ceramics are definitely
- 50:31popular right now. Like.
- 50:34Taking everyday situations and turning it into art.
- 50:38Yeah, but why do I have to put my spoons in a boring container
- 50:42when I can put it in a tomato container like these are?
- 50:46We're looking at a vase that has a bunch of 3D tomatoes, like all
- 50:51effects onto the vase and and then there's a garlic version
- 50:56that's the same thing. And then we went into that
- 50:58little shop and there were like fish, like koi fish that were
- 51:05mugs and their tail was the handle.
- 51:08Love that koi fish. Very whimsical.
- 51:11I feel like it just inspires whimsy to look.
- 51:13I know I actually got a little it's it's made out of some sort
- 51:18of ceramic and it's a little koi fish that you can put in your
- 51:25bird feeder or, you know, not a bird feeder, a bird bath like
- 51:29your garden. Yeah.
- 51:31And it actually like floats and it looks real.
- 51:35So it entices the birds to come and or it maybe scares them.
- 51:39Maybe that's why you have so many Bluebirds.
- 51:40Well, I have had a lot of birds out in my garden lately, but I
- 51:44did remove that fish and I put it in a bowl to make it look
- 51:49like it was a real fish and a whimsical.
- 51:52Yeah, I. Love that.
- 51:54Yeah, I use them one of our displays or designs.
- 51:59Was that at the house recently? I yeah, I saw the fishbowl and I
- 52:03was like, did you bring muffins? I didn't bring muffins.
- 52:06Is at home OK? Good.
- 52:07I wanted muffins to be safe. Muffin is now in Muffins third
- 52:11home, OK, and it is quite the home for Muffins.
- 52:15So, well, and it was a whimsical decision on set for you to bring
- 52:20in a little fish one day. You were like, you know what
- 52:24would look good with this room as a fishbowl?
- 52:27And you just showed up with a Betta fish and we had to name
- 52:30it. And I was you came.
- 52:31Up with the name? Well, we had all.
- 52:33Sorts of name ideas, but but he didn't look like the name ideas
- 52:38we had, so we had to just think on our feet on muffins.
- 52:41Muffins, he looked. Like a muffins for sure.
- 52:43So I. The muffins is whimsical because
- 52:48I'm telling you every day, I every morning I go turn on the
- 52:52little light for his fish tank and I feed him and he swims up
- 52:56and just brings me joy every morning.
- 52:59Can be like living art too. So they can definitely be
- 53:02whimsical and you can just have a little bowl and be as involved
- 53:06as you want to be. But yeah, muffins very whimsical
- 53:12and I think that kind of speaks to our ability to bring in
- 53:17whimsy on set without it looking to either girly or spring season
- 53:25or cluttered, you know, like it's it's those little decisions
- 53:31like buying a beta fish the night before your photo shoot,
- 53:35right, and bringing them to set and being like this paprika
- 53:38colored sofa needs. That colored fish, yes.
- 53:43Right and. And you know, I was looking at
- 53:46every color of fish and he was specifically.
- 53:50Looking at the photo, the product and looking at the fish
- 53:53and comparing, yeah, he he did go well, he's like kind of a
- 53:59orangey beige color and he plays off.
- 54:03Gotten a little bit darker, I think.
- 54:06Yeah, he's less orange. He's now he's more like a deep
- 54:11burgundy color now and his. Goodness.
- 54:13His fans are all like. Well, you know, Burgundy's in.
- 54:16He heard Burgundy was in and he was like, I'm adapting.
- 54:19So beautiful, I love him so much.
- 54:21Muffins. Yeah, little muffins.
- 54:23Yeah, so little things like that are just great And you know
- 54:28what's interesting back to the ceramics that got us thinking
- 54:32about fish is I found in my grandma's trying to cabinet.
- 54:40I said cabinet because I was she lives in Wisconsin and so
- 54:44anyway, for little my accent came out, but she had salt and
- 54:50pepper shakers that look like tomatoes and they're on a plate
- 54:54of lettuce leaf and they're cute.
- 54:56They're antique, so. And they you take them off and
- 55:00yeah, OK, so then it's like a little plate that's lettuce.
- 55:03Yeah, that's lettuce. And then the salt and pepper
- 55:05shakers. And I'm like, this is the cutest
- 55:07thing I've ever seen. And I think I have a photo of it
- 55:09somewhere. No, my mom has a handle on them
- 55:12and she's not giving that up. She's like, these are mine.
- 55:16So. Yeah.
- 55:18Because they're adorable. But the point being that this
- 55:21kind of whimsy ceramic work has been around for a long time, and
- 55:27now we're just bringing it back and we're embracing it more than
- 55:29ever. We're repeating it.
- 55:31Yeah. So I would say if you want a
- 55:35little bit more happiness and joy in your life, just add some
- 55:38whimsy. Get a fish or some ceramic
- 55:41pancakes or some ceramic tomatoes.
- 55:44Or some fake fish. Or fake fish.
- 55:46Yeah, yeah. But I was seeing a lot of whimsy
- 55:51also when I went to, it was like a couple of weeks ago, I went to
- 55:57the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York.
- 56:01So aside from High Point Market, you know, I came back and I was
- 56:06like whimsy's everywhere. But this definitely solidified
- 56:09that for me because both in the lighting.
- 56:13I love those mirrors. Yeah, the mirrors are bordered
- 56:18with ceramics that are twisty and layered and, and they are
- 56:24different colors and that's fun A.
- 56:28Friend of mine has a sculptural piece on her wall that's those
- 56:33just like those mirrors, but it's it's a sculptural piece.
- 56:36It's not in like a black and cream stripe.
- 56:39I don't know who the artist is. Do you know who it is on this
- 56:42or? Beginner surveillance, I think.
- 56:46I I don't know. But anyway, very cool.
- 56:50Yeah. And then sub material on the
- 56:53right, they were making all of these pieces of art that could
- 56:57double as like sound absorbing. So whether you have like, you
- 57:03know, a place where your band practices in your house or.
- 57:07Or in like an open office concept.
- 57:09Yeah. Or like a your apartment is
- 57:14above or you own a restaurant in your there's apartments above
- 57:18the restaurant and you want to design the restaurant space in a
- 57:21way that's considerate. These are great interior design
- 57:27solutions that are whimsical because they're like all these
- 57:30fun. The blue, the blue one, there is
- 57:32that thing. Yeah, it's like an art piece.
- 57:34It looks like bright Blues. And then they had like a mirror
- 57:38that was lined with felt as well, like blue felt.
- 57:41Felt on the blue one. Yeah, it's felt.
- 57:44And they had all these different colors of felt, and then the
- 57:47walls were cork. And then what do you think of
- 57:52those lamps on the left? I think they're a lot of fun.
- 57:55They look a little bit like Mackenzie Childs.
- 57:57Yeah, Which, you know, I love. I know you love her.
- 58:01Is this vase? Uh huh.
- 58:02Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's.
- 58:05Actually a a little coffee for tea well.
- 58:10That's the one that you put flowers in.
- 58:12See, that's whimsical to repurpose a teapot and make it a
- 58:17flower pot instead. But yeah, these lamps are all
- 58:23stained glass, and they're so many colors.
- 58:26Stained glass, I thought those. I thought it was like fabric.
- 58:29No thin glass fun. And yeah, there's just a lot of
- 58:33different colors and textures going on there.
- 58:35So they definitely they're statement lamps and it's a play
- 58:39on like Tiffany lamps, I think, but just modern contemporizing
- 58:44it. Then there's these like square
- 58:47lamps and they are they battery powered?
- 58:51I think some of them are, some of them are wired though, but
- 58:54they're they look like Rubik's cubes, but they're all one
- 58:58color. And yeah, they're you can either
- 59:01have sconces or table lamps, but they're bright colors and they
- 59:05will definitely infuse fun into the situation.
- 59:08So just like lots of contemporary fun things.
- 59:14Oh, and then we have to go back to High Point though, because
- 59:19this was a really good example of whimsy in the mainstream
- 59:25every year at High Point in the main.
- 59:28Hall Yes, they have those designers.
- 59:31There's like a designer that they choose.
- 59:33I feel like that really speaks to what the style is now that a
- 59:39lot of the different vendors are bringing in.
- 59:41And I thought they did a good job with this designer because
- 59:48it's really bringing whimsy space and there's a light up
- 59:53apple or tomato as like an accent on the couch instead of a
- 59:58pillow. There's a disco BLOB coming on
- 1:00:03SO. My friend that I told you has
- 1:00:05that swirly sculpture. She also has that.
- 1:00:08Disco BLOB, yeah. She fell in love with it.
- 1:00:11She bought it a couple years ago, and it literally like when
- 1:00:14the light hits it in her house, it's like sparkle, sparkle,
- 1:00:16sparkle. Yeah.
- 1:00:18And I think the BLOB's fun because again, it's like
- 1:00:20circular and like. It's a lot of fun.
- 1:00:22Like whimsical and fluid. It's not like pointy.
- 1:00:27And the rug. If you look at the rug, it looks
- 1:00:30like stripes, and we were talking about stripes earlier as
- 1:00:32part of a whimsy look in your room.
- 1:00:34Yeah, this has that feel to it. And that cabinet with the
- 1:00:39scalloped? Yeah, pink cabinet and love it
- 1:00:42and the seal and chartreuse, the teal sofa with the kind of
- 1:00:47greenish mossy chartreuse pillows.
- 1:00:51It's just a lot of color mixing. But this is a perfect example of
- 1:00:55you were saying we saw all these colors mixed together that
- 1:00:58normally you didn't think would go well together.
- 1:01:00They do that here. And then there was the other
- 1:01:04side of it that's a little bit color drenched.
- 1:01:07Yeah, it's more color drenched. It's like burgundy walls and
- 1:01:13like a terracotta dining chair. But like a really deep
- 1:01:17terracotta. Exactly.
- 1:01:19And it's more elevated of a lot, but or you know, more, not
- 1:01:24fancy, but just get more elevated.
- 1:01:26I don't know. It's less playful, but it brings
- 1:01:29in playfulness with the shape of the chairs and the flowers that
- 1:01:34really speaks to like having fun with florals.
- 1:01:36And they're all like springs of single flowers and different
- 1:01:41colors. But.
- 1:01:42All kind of big. Shade, yeah, and like little.
- 1:01:44Cute. I love those little rooms, I
- 1:01:46always look forward to seeing them.
- 1:01:48Yeah, so that's fun. We should show some of our
- 1:01:54furniture that we think is whimsical or could go whimsy.
- 1:01:59Yeah, yeah, we should. I think that if we're wanting to
- 1:02:05tie it back to how to bring whimsy into your home room by
- 1:02:09room, we have some great examples, I think.
- 1:02:14And it could just be a piece. It doesn't have to be your whole
- 1:02:16room, unless you want it to be your whole room.
- 1:02:19Yeah, yeah, exactly. So like in the living room, how
- 1:02:24would you bring whimsy in? I think this is like a place
- 1:02:27that's super public and so people are a little worried
- 1:02:31about bringing in too much whimsy.
- 1:02:35You know, it could be something as simple as a piece of art, or
- 1:02:39it could be a rug. I mean, it could really be
- 1:02:42anything, a mirror, a chest, but a really easy one would be a rug
- 1:02:49because you're going to get, you know, the style of the rug and
- 1:02:54maybe start with that. Where do you want to start?
- 1:02:57Yeah. I mean, I think the style of the
- 1:02:59rug is a great place to bring whimsy in.
- 1:03:02And then you can kind of because that could have like the bolder
- 1:03:06pattern and then you. Could then you just play off of
- 1:03:08that? Yeah, you could pull from like 1
- 1:03:11color in the rug and bring in like a sofa that's that same
- 1:03:16color potentially or paint the room a color in that rug.
- 1:03:21Absolutely. I think it's about starting with
- 1:03:23one piece or like say you already have a sofa that you're
- 1:03:28like, I love this sofa and it's paprika colored or it's green
- 1:03:36and I want to play off of that in the room.
- 1:03:40So maybe with the paprika you could just add like a little
- 1:03:43periwinkle or, yeah, lavender pillows or a throw on it.
- 1:03:48Yeah. What was the other color you
- 1:03:51said? Just a green.
- 1:03:52Green Yeah, green is so popular as like a statement piece.
- 1:03:57To maybe with that one, like we saw the picture, just do the
- 1:04:00reverse and do like the teal pillows with it.
- 1:04:03Yeah, yeah, that would be fun. So like kind of I think it's a
- 1:04:12good idea. And what I'm like hearing from
- 1:04:14this is if you want whimsy, but you don't want to let go crazy,
- 1:04:20like maybe you have a really fun color, but then you play off of
- 1:04:24that color like to like and choose something from the same
- 1:04:30color family. So the colors are less all over
- 1:04:32the place, but it's a fun color, you know?
- 1:04:35Yeah, maybe maximalize the brighter color.
- 1:04:39Yeah, exactly. For whichever color you want to
- 1:04:42use. Yeah.
- 1:04:43And then lighting is a great way to bring whimsy in, whether it's
- 1:04:46the shape or like the lights that we have here in the studio.
- 1:04:51Easily. Just like circular.
- 1:04:54Well, it looks like a sculpture. That's what I like about it.
- 1:04:57It's it's a source of light, but it also looks like a sculpture
- 1:05:01in your room. And like the picture you showed
- 1:05:04of the fireplace, that orange fireplace in the Jonathan Adler
- 1:05:07room. This could take, you know, a
- 1:05:10corner and turn it into a wild moment.
- 1:05:13Yeah, I agree. I agree.
- 1:05:16And then I think little case pieces like whether you have a
- 1:05:21cabinet or a side table, maybe those are a place that really
- 1:05:28are a pop of color because there's a lot of fun or.
- 1:05:31Pop of whimsy in the shape like the console table.
- 1:05:35I think it is it the Bali table, I'm not sure the name of it.
- 1:05:38We'll have it in the show notes, but a piece like that, because
- 1:05:43of the shapes and then the layered wood that's on it, is
- 1:05:47very whimsy. Basically tree trunks or or like
- 1:05:52wood sections. We have a picture of it, but
- 1:05:56it's just like pieces of wood. Yeah, there it is.
- 1:06:00Oh, the Reed. This one here.
- 1:06:02Oh, the Bali. Yeah.
- 1:06:04Yeah. So something like that could go
- 1:06:07whimsical. And it's a it's a nice piece to
- 1:06:11have because you can use it behind a sofa.
- 1:06:14You could use it in an entrance hall.
- 1:06:16You could use it pretty much anywhere that you want to add a
- 1:06:20table to. That's great.
- 1:06:22And it's not just like a standard table, it's like
- 1:06:25woodwork and creative woodwork. And that when you said put it
- 1:06:29behind a sofa, that's another good living room idea.
- 1:06:32Yeah, if you want to. Win the sofa is if you float a
- 1:06:35sofa and you don't want it to look like unintentional.
- 1:06:39If you ground it with a sofa table, that's a great way to
- 1:06:43make that decision look intentional and I think floating
- 1:06:46sofas make it seem like you have more space in your space and it
- 1:06:52is just kind of whimsical. Yeah, it's different.
- 1:06:54I like how it just finishes the back of it with something else.
- 1:06:58Yeah, I agree. Yeah, I like the blue cabinet.
- 1:07:02The color is whimsical. I think the cabinet is a pretty
- 1:07:05standard basic lifting cabinet, but the color makes it
- 1:07:09whimsical. Right.
- 1:07:10But it's that good mix and match of, you know, we have a bright
- 1:07:15color, but then we have a more buttoned up shape or like more
- 1:07:20streamline shape. So that way it's like not crazy
- 1:07:25wild. I love the little end table with
- 1:07:29the brass legs on it and the stair step effect.
- 1:07:33Yeah. It's a little whimsy.
- 1:07:35I agree. And the other thing about your
- 1:07:37living room and people being nervous about bringing in too
- 1:07:40much playfulness or it looking wild and it's somewhere
- 1:07:44everybody's going to see is it's really disarming for your guests
- 1:07:48to see that you're having fun with things.
- 1:07:51Like I think it's going to make your gatherings better and your
- 1:07:54conversations better. Because when people walk into
- 1:07:57the space, they're not like, you know, I got to keep it together.
- 1:08:01They're like, let's have fun. It was it somebody, it was a
- 1:08:05designer, was it Elsa de Wolf or someone will have to check it,
- 1:08:10but said always put a red chair in a living room or in in a room
- 1:08:15because it makes people that are a little bit more shy or
- 1:08:19bashful, like set them in there. So the person who's a little
- 1:08:23nervous to talk, put them in a red chair.
- 1:08:25Yeah, They'll be a little less bashful.
- 1:08:29That's I think that's some more ease.
- 1:08:31That's a great idea. Yeah.
- 1:08:33I don't know if it was Elsa Dewoof.
- 1:08:34I don't remember who it was, but.
- 1:08:36Said that. Somebody said it, maybe, I know,
- 1:08:39but yeah, to add a little red chair.
- 1:08:44So going into maybe a space people see less but is just for
- 1:08:48you, like your bedroom. A lot of times I think
- 1:08:52everything out there is your bedroom should be an Oasis, you
- 1:08:55know, which is true for a lot of people.
- 1:08:59I can also have whimsy to it. It's.
- 1:09:01Also totally have whimsy and we have a lot of pieces that show
- 1:09:04that. And it could be subtle or it
- 1:09:06could be more in your face, but for some people it's like, I
- 1:09:11just want a touch of whimsy in this Oasis, calming, relaxing
- 1:09:16atmosphere. And for other people, they're
- 1:09:18like, I don't spend much time in my room other than in the
- 1:09:21morning when I'm getting dressed and I want to be inspired.
- 1:09:24So like, I don't need it to be as much of an Oasis.
- 1:09:27I want it to be like a fun place, you know?
- 1:09:30It can be fun and an Oasis at the same time.
- 1:09:33I think you're so bright. And again.
- 1:09:35An easy way to add whimsy. And if you, you don't, you know,
- 1:09:40you want it to be more subtle. Yeah.
- 1:09:43Sheets. Your bed sheets.
- 1:09:45You can do some fun, whimsical bedding.
- 1:09:49And then, you know, you're pulling back the duvet cover or
- 1:09:53the comforter, and then you have these sponge sheets.
- 1:09:55Yeah, I totally agree with that. I had that once.
- 1:09:59It was like I just had a grey but then or like quilt, but then
- 1:10:04my sheets were like floral and crazy.
- 1:10:07And then, yeah, when you pull it back, it's like in the pillow
- 1:10:10cases, it's just the right amount of whimsy in the paint,
- 1:10:14like you're saying again, and more like curvy shapes.
- 1:10:18Let's look at some of the furniture that we have for
- 1:10:22bedrooms specifically. And these are all things you can
- 1:10:26find at Furniture Row or or online at Furniture Row.
- 1:10:29Yeah, they're just good examples, like 1 is Gray and it
- 1:10:34has WAVY put outs. It's the La Vida.
- 1:10:40It's a fun bed because you can use that in an adult room or
- 1:10:44even in a kids room. It comes in multiple sizes, but
- 1:10:47that's a great piece, right? I love the little squiggles as
- 1:10:51we call them. Squiggles.
- 1:10:53Yeah, and I like this, this fabric bed.
- 1:10:57It's it looks like just pillows because the headboard.
- 1:11:00Yeah, it does. But that's a neat piece.
- 1:11:03I think that could be very whimsical.
- 1:11:05Yeah, it's like this white fabric bed with two big pillows
- 1:11:09as the headboard, and it's just soft and cozy.
- 1:11:12And low to the ground it. Reminds me of a marshmallow.
- 1:11:15It does it. Does.
- 1:11:16Yeah. That's why it feels whimsical to
- 1:11:19me, because it totally reminds me of a marshmallow and the
- 1:11:23color of the year cloud dancer. You know that can't, despite
- 1:11:27your views and beliefs on Cloud Dancer it is.
- 1:11:32Clouds are whimsical. Well, they're very whimsical.
- 1:11:36Yeah, for sure. I mean, think about it.
- 1:11:38You look at cloud formations in the sky and sometimes you see
- 1:11:43like an animal in it or a face or, you know, whatever it is so.
- 1:11:47And. Then you have like an example of
- 1:11:50a bed set that's like really, you know, contemporary and just
- 1:11:57like a normal wood tone, like light wood tone color, but it.
- 1:12:01Wouldn't have to use all those pieces together.
- 1:12:03You could take pieces out of it and mix it with something else.
- 1:12:06Yeah, but like the pieces that it offers bring in whimsy.
- 1:12:11I'm thinking because of the curves.
- 1:12:13What's your thought process? I think you're right, the curves
- 1:12:16definitely add that whimsical touch to it.
- 1:12:19I love the mirror. I love the shape of that.
- 1:12:23Yeah. I think the the night stands to
- 1:12:26that group. Do we know the name of this?
- 1:12:29Contempo. Is yes, contempo.
- 1:12:31That's what we used with the furry bed in the girl room,
- 1:12:36yeah. OK.
- 1:12:37So that's going to be fun and a photo to look at.
- 1:12:39Yeah. And then, OK, so going back to
- 1:12:43entertaining dining, it's the year of the dining room for you.
- 1:12:46The year of the dining room Have you switched from your floor to
- 1:12:50a dining table yet? I mean, I do throughout the week
- 1:12:53always, but you know my preference.
- 1:12:55It's always. Either the floor or the sofa.
- 1:12:58Yeah, yeah, I think the Japanese got it right with those floor
- 1:13:01pillows and below tables. I just think it's awesome.
- 1:13:06But but yeah, like. I love all of these pieces.
- 1:13:10Love them. Oh my gosh, so much whimsy here.
- 1:13:14You've got a. Lot of cut outs.
- 1:13:16Yeah, for sure. But this one table, again, I
- 1:13:21apologize, I don't know the names, but we will put them up
- 1:13:23for you. The black table with the white
- 1:13:28and black chairs. I love the shape of those legs
- 1:13:31on the chair. I feel like that's so whimsical.
- 1:13:34It actually has a bit of a Cubism look to it as well, but I
- 1:13:40think that's so whimsical. I love the yellow swivel chair.
- 1:13:44It's so fun. It is.
- 1:13:47Do you have a favorite up here? Well, the Nash that the like the
- 1:13:53kind of Tulip tables that you have, you've got all sorts of
- 1:13:57fun. That's what they're called,
- 1:14:00right? Tulip shaped tables.
- 1:14:03Pedestal. Yeah, a little pedestal it.
- 1:14:05Looks like like a glass turned upside down.
- 1:14:08There you go. But anyway, I think that shape
- 1:14:12in itself is very whimsical and paired with some colorful
- 1:14:16chairs, I think you can have a lot of fun in a dining
- 1:14:18situation. And again, you want to have good
- 1:14:20conversations round. Tables.
- 1:14:23Round tables are great because nobody's sequestered at the end
- 1:14:29of a table. Yeah, they're not sequestered.
- 1:14:32No way. They're in the conversation.
- 1:14:35And it's just, you know, when you bring in fun, playful
- 1:14:39things, people are going to feel more excited about the
- 1:14:43conversation you're having. I like this little white fear
- 1:14:47with the swirls on it. Yeah, I think that could mix
- 1:14:49into a lot of looks like with that rainforest table.
- 1:14:53Yeah, those would be fun together.
- 1:14:55Yeah. It doesn't all have to be, you
- 1:14:57know, super modern it you can add this other look to the space
- 1:15:03but still give off whimsy. Exactly.
- 1:15:06Whether it's more of like a nature whimsy or more of a
- 1:15:11modern whimsy, I think you gave some great examples of just how
- 1:15:16people can practically put it into their lives.
- 1:15:20And the other thing before we kind of wrap things up is they
- 1:15:23just want to touch on the differences in different types
- 1:15:27of whimsy. Like we talked about how you can
- 1:15:29have maximalist whimsy or eclectic or, you know, whatever,
- 1:15:34but maybe whimsy isn't like the same look for everyone.
- 1:15:39Maybe it's like like the Pinterest trends, for example,
- 1:15:44there's a lot of focus on circus aesthetic.
- 1:15:50Like I think search results for circus like vintage circus
- 1:15:55aesthetic went up so much. And that doesn't always have to
- 1:16:00be bright, no. And whimsical.
- 1:16:02Look what they've done there. It's very circus.
- 1:16:06But there's an American flag on the wall.
- 1:16:08Yeah. What is this?
- 1:16:09Where is this? So this is a place in New York
- 1:16:12that I went that has live music. They it's it's a just a very
- 1:16:16whimsical establishment overall. They.
- 1:16:18Called, you know. I think it's called Frank's, but
- 1:16:21they only serve hot dogs for food.
- 1:16:23Only hot dogs? Yeah.
- 1:16:25And so. But anyway, they have really
- 1:16:30good quality live music. But as I was sitting there, I
- 1:16:33was noticing this room is circus themed, but it's not circus
- 1:16:37themed like somebody would just think in the bright colors.
- 1:16:41It's circus in the shapes of the ceiling.
- 1:16:44Lights on the stage. Yeah, the lights on the stage
- 1:16:48going around the border of the ceiling of the stage.
- 1:16:53It's in the pole that's in the middle of the room that makes it
- 1:16:57look like a circus tent. And it's striped.
- 1:16:59But yeah, it's all like darker colors.
- 1:17:03And then there's an American flag as the backdrop that's kind
- 1:17:06of like, you know, tent material.
- 1:17:09So that was fabric. It was Fabric I.
- 1:17:12So fun it. Looks like like one of the maybe
- 1:17:15like sacks of grain, like grain sacks or something that it's
- 1:17:20made of. You can see some logos on the
- 1:17:24fabric. So it looks like grain sacks to
- 1:17:26me. But anyway, it doesn't have to
- 1:17:28be like circus as in like ha ha like fun like.
- 1:17:33Animals. Animals like, yeah, this is like
- 1:17:36vintage. I love that, love it.
- 1:17:39And it's kind of darker but dark.
- 1:17:42You can have dark whimsy for sure, and it can be a Moody or
- 1:17:46whimsy look, like that dining room that we saw from Market
- 1:17:49with the dark Burgundies, or like a room like this, a little
- 1:17:53brighter. Yeah, like nighttime, Lindsay.
- 1:17:57There's little candles in the middle of every table.
- 1:17:59And then the chairs at every table are like wire chairs.
- 1:18:05They're like twisted wire chairs.
- 1:18:07They're like cafe tables. So how?
- 1:18:11Fun. Anyway, where the Franks good?
- 1:18:14Yeah, yeah. And then where the hot, where
- 1:18:19the hot dogs are eaten. I was at those tables for sure.
- 1:18:23How fun. Yeah.
- 1:18:24But then, you know, you could have like a more bright circus
- 1:18:29aesthetic, for example, like circus interiors.
- 1:18:33The it's trending up. Restaurant at Printham.
- 1:18:36Yeah, it's a It's the coffee shop at Printham.
- 1:18:38I love it. In New York and it's like got
- 1:18:42this fabric green bright ceiling and it's lined with the lights
- 1:18:47and it's a very daytime circus bright, happy aesthetic.
- 1:18:51And it's very elevated though with the fabrics that they
- 1:18:54chose, the patterns. And then on the floor it's like
- 1:18:57marbles that are these like round shapes, oblong, they fit
- 1:19:03together, lots of greens anyway. So you're just showing like the
- 1:19:09two different color combos, ones Moody, ones light and airy.
- 1:19:13So it really depends on what you want.
- 1:19:15Exactly like circus is a whimsical trend that is
- 1:19:19searching or that is trending in search.
- 1:19:24But it can be. Yeah, it can be executed 2
- 1:19:28completely different ways. And then the wunderkind trend is
- 1:19:35the Wilderken trend is the other like really popular thing that
- 1:19:40is more traditional whimsy. What is flower outfit men?
- 1:19:45Yeah. So people are searching flower
- 1:19:47outfits for men, that is the search results are going up for
- 1:19:52that bug jewelry, deer aesthetic.
- 1:19:55Deer aesthetic we definitely saw definitely like on prints for
- 1:20:00pillows and napkins, just like kind of that spotted full print
- 1:20:06or not full. What's a baby fawn?
- 1:20:08Fawn. Fawn Yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:10We were seeing the actual deer and then we were seeing the.
- 1:20:14Spots. Yeah, the spots on quite a bit.
- 1:20:16And you found like this, I don't know, like a stick with
- 1:20:20butterflies all over it that could go in a vase as a piece of
- 1:20:24art. And they looked like a real
- 1:20:27butterflies that were just taxidermy.
- 1:20:30And there's like that centerpiece at the same leather
- 1:20:34place that had the kites we have.
- 1:20:36To find that leather place name because it was so cool.
- 1:20:38It was, but they brought in all these pots of plants rather than
- 1:20:43having like a vase in the middle of the table, they.
- 1:20:45Just it was. Just had a collection of pots of
- 1:20:47plants and taper candles. Terracotta pots.
- 1:20:50So this is something you could do at your own home too, totally
- 1:20:53easily. And terracotta pots are super
- 1:20:55cheap. Like if you go to Home Depot or
- 1:20:58Lowe's to get them, they're so inexpensive.
- 1:21:01And you could plant like if you're doing a dinner party, you
- 1:21:04could do like fresh herbs in them and then.
- 1:21:08Like the Basil OH. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:10Or Rosemary or whichever. So now you have the fragrance of
- 1:21:13that as. Well, and you can just put from
- 1:21:15it when you're cooking exactly. So it's and it's like a
- 1:21:18centerpiece that will last longer.
- 1:21:20So and there are mushrooms brought into interior design,
- 1:21:24but it's more like elevated in some places like that lamp,
- 1:21:29there's a bunch of. Mushrooms.
- 1:21:31Do you remember that room we went into that they were having
- 1:21:34the dinner party and the whole table?
- 1:21:36It was like the Super long table, yeah.
- 1:21:40Did you end up putting together of that?
- 1:21:42I did, I got a few photos before I was asked to leave but.
- 1:21:47We weren't invited and it was very clear.
- 1:21:50It was, yes, it was so beautiful.
- 1:21:53But it was so beautiful. We had to just get a photo and.
- 1:21:56A picture up. Yeah, it was whimsical of us to
- 1:21:59adventure in there and, and just meet the people and.
- 1:22:03They had two entrances. Do you remember the first one?
- 1:22:06They were like, oh, sorry, this is invite only.
- 1:22:09So we left and we went outside and around like, oh.
- 1:22:13Look, another entrance. Yeah.
- 1:22:16You were asked to leave there too.
- 1:22:17They were more polite. They were nice in the back
- 1:22:20entrance area like they were just to.
- 1:22:22Leave. They were just like, oh, you
- 1:22:23know, you can come back tomorrow.
- 1:22:24Tomorrow when it's open to the public.
- 1:22:26Yeah, but we, while they were towing us leave.
- 1:22:29We're just taking photos because we're like, this is the most
- 1:22:31whimsical table we've ever seen in our lives and we need to know
- 1:22:35about this interior designer. Yeah, so all of that to say,
- 1:22:41there are so many different ways you can take whimsy trends right
- 1:22:44now and make it your own, your own style.
- 1:22:48If you're more bright and happy or dark and Moody, like whimsy
- 1:22:52is what makes you smile. So we.
- 1:22:55Should probably like, again, go through some of the things to
- 1:22:59instantly add whimsy to a room, yeah?
- 1:23:02Stripes what's what's a good like gateway whimsy item would
- 1:23:07you say for each room? Like a vase or what do?
- 1:23:11What do you mean by that? Kind of like, like what are the
- 1:23:16things of whimsy? Small ways you could bring
- 1:23:19whimsy into any room. Just like if somebody's looking
- 1:23:22to get started. Yeah, I mean, definitely vases
- 1:23:25and things like that or a, you know, floral arrangement or a
- 1:23:30rug. But if you just want to talk
- 1:23:32about, you know, motifs, it could be checkerboard stripes,
- 1:23:39squiggles, scallops, textures like a rug that is high, low
- 1:23:47sculptural type rugs. We're seeing that a lot.
- 1:23:50And that's definitely a whimsical thing as well.
- 1:23:53We saw it in that one example of High Point where we saw it
- 1:23:59looked like a stripe drug, but it was like pieces.
- 1:24:01Like subway tiles? Almost.
- 1:24:03Yeah. So that was carved.
- 1:24:06So yeah, I would, I would start there.
- 1:24:08So add a stripe pillow immediately.
- 1:24:11Yeah, immediately. Yeah, immediately.
- 1:24:13Get off your phone or your computer, whatever you're doing,
- 1:24:17just go find one. Find a little stripe pillow.
- 1:24:20It could even have a saying on it if you want.
- 1:24:22Or yeah that would be cute. Or like these velvet pillows in
- 1:24:28a fun color like this green color is great.
- 1:24:30It also comes in a Marigold color that's incredible.
- 1:24:34Yeah, I love that color. It's like a brighter orange.
- 1:24:38Yellowy color, so you know something like that.
- 1:24:43And paint. Paint is such an easy way to
- 1:24:48add. Or peel and stick wallpaper.
- 1:24:51Peel and stick wallpaper, yeah. Paint though, is pretty
- 1:24:54inexpensive. I mean, you can't get a lot of
- 1:24:56inexpensive Wallpapers as well, but if you're.
- 1:24:59Renting and you don't want to damage your walls.
- 1:25:01That's the only reason I say that.
- 1:25:02Yeah. But but yeah, sometimes the
- 1:25:05landlord might like your paint choice better, so that's true.
- 1:25:08Could always just ask for forgiveness later.
- 1:25:13Or ask yeah first. We don't ask.
- 1:25:16Or don't. Yeah, we're more asked for
- 1:25:18forgiveness. People.
- 1:25:19Yeah. Determined.
- 1:25:22OK, well, I'm excited for people to just get on their whimsy.
- 1:25:27Journey. Whimsy Train.
- 1:25:29We will follow up with a blog post just so people can if
- 1:25:36you're like, that was a lot to digest.
- 1:25:38I need to like come back to these principles like once in a
- 1:25:43while there's going to be a lot of photos and titles where you
- 1:25:46can kind of just be like, oh, right, OK, sure.
- 1:25:49So that'll be up on the Furniture Row website have.
- 1:25:52Blog links to furniture that we sell that they can little ones
- 1:25:57you were. Giving an example of how to
- 1:25:59bring whimsy into your life. We didn't show sofas, so we
- 1:26:04could probably show that. Yeah, in the blog.
- 1:26:06There'll be sofas in the blog, don't worry, and that are
- 1:26:10whimsical. And then yeah, I guess there's
- 1:26:15the blog and follow us on social cuz we'll have all the little

- 1:27:01Bye everyone.
