Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning. As you head into this day, we want
- 0:09Speaker 1: to just take a minute and open up the Bible
- 0:12Speaker 1: and say to God, what do you have to say
- 0:15Speaker 1: to me personally today? I love how God speaks into
- 0:20Speaker 1: my life personally at the same time as He's speaking
- 0:23Speaker 1: to other people around me in a different way, sometimes
- 0:26Speaker 1: through the same passage or the same Bible teaching.
- 0:29Speaker 1: God Himself is alive. He's in your life, and He
- 0:34Speaker 1: wants to speak to you. That's why we open the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Bible every day, because God speaks to us through His word,
- 0:41Speaker 1: the Bible, and it's not just esoteric truths that live
- 0:47Speaker 1: in some theology book somewhere. The Bible is so full
- 0:51Speaker 1: of such practical things that shape our lives in meaningful ways.
- 0:57Speaker 1: So as we start this day, just come with an
- 0:59Speaker 1: attitude of prayer that says, God, I'm listening.
- 1:03Speaker 1: What do you have to say to me
- 1:06Speaker 1: We're going through the 3rd chapter of the book of
- 1:08Speaker 1: 2 Peter in the New Testament of the Bible today.
- 1:12Speaker 1: And uh uh we started off yesterday with the beginning
- 1:17Speaker 1: of this chapter where Peter says, I just want to
- 1:20Speaker 1: remind you of some things you already know. Things that
- 1:24Speaker 1: have been written by the prophets in the Old Testament,
- 1:26Speaker 1: things that Jesus has said.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He goes on to say, know this first of all,
- 1:33Speaker 1: that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing,
- 1:39Speaker 1: following their own sinful desires.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Well, we certainly see that today, don't we? There's plenty
- 1:46Speaker 1: of people both in the news and in academia, but
- 1:51Speaker 1: also people we know personally who are just scoffers, they're sceptics,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and they don't want God in their lives, they just
- 1:59Speaker 1: want to follow their own sinful desires in life and
- 2:03Speaker 1: say it's OK, anybody can do whatever they feel like doing.
- 2:08Speaker 1: They will say Peter says, Where is the promise of
- 2:13Speaker 1: Jesus coming?
- 2:15Speaker 1: I mean, Christians talk about the fact that Jesus is
- 2:17Speaker 1: going to return one day. Well, where is that?
- 2:22Speaker 1: He goes on, for this is still quoting the people, saying,
- 2:27Speaker 1: Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since
- 2:30Speaker 1: the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were
- 2:36Speaker 1: from the beginning of creation. It's all just keeping on going.
- 2:42Speaker 1: They deliberately overlook this fact that the heavens existed long
- 2:49Speaker 1: ago and the earth was formed out of water and
- 2:53Speaker 1: through water by the word of God.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And that by means of these the world that then
- 3:00Speaker 1: existed was deluged with water and perished in the great
- 3:05Speaker 1: flood that God sent.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But by the same word as God used to both
- 3:12Speaker 1: create this world and to flood it with water, by
- 3:16Speaker 1: that same word, the heavens and earth that now exist
- 3:21Speaker 1: are stored up for fire.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of
- 3:28Speaker 1: the ungodly.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So sceptics are there. There'll always be sceptics around, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: they'll say, Where is the promise that Jesus is coming back?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Is God really involved in this world? Isn't everything just
- 3:41Speaker 1: going on by its natural laws, just as it has
- 3:44Speaker 1: since the beginning, and it's gonna keep on going.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And Peter says they're missing out on something really important.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They're deliberately overlooking. God is involved in this world. He
- 3:56Speaker 1: already destroyed it once with the flood, and He's going
- 3:59Speaker 1: to destroy it in the future with fire. There will
- 4:03Speaker 1: be a day of judgement and destruction of the ungodly.
- 4:07Speaker 1: If you're living for God, and you look at the
- 4:09Speaker 1: people who seem to be leaving God out of their
- 4:11Speaker 1: lives and you look at their secular lives and you think, oh,
- 4:15Speaker 1: that actually really looks fun to be able to just
- 4:17Speaker 1: pursue pleasure and gratifying my own desires when I want,
- 4:22Speaker 1: don't forget.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Things are not over yet. God is real.
- 4:29Speaker 1: There is a day when he's going to bring this
- 4:31Speaker 1: world to a close, and there will be a day
- 4:34Speaker 1: of judgement, and the ungodly in that day will wish
- 4:38Speaker 1: that they had lived for God.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I'm John North.
