- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Lance Lynn Kyle Gibson, Family Business. Excused absence.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Matt Holliday has faded us for the time being. Hopefully
- 0:21Speaker 1: we'll get him back on the show. The Cardinals just
- 0:25Speaker 1: wrapped up a road trip where they finished five hundred
- 0:29Speaker 1: some nice comeback wins. Jordan Walker is having a monster
- 0:35Speaker 1: breakout season so far. In the early going, we're going
- 0:38Speaker 1: to get to all that. But first Lance, as you know,
- 0:41Speaker 1: we beg so we're asking people, if you enjoy Cardinal Territory,
- 0:46Speaker 1: tell some friends, or at the very least reach out.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Hit that subscriber button because we're trying to get to
- 0:51Speaker 1: seven k.
- 0:52Speaker 2: We are growing, but lately it's.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Been a bit of a slog, so go ahead and
- 0:57Speaker 1: hit that subscribe button. Now we're going to talk some Cardinals,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but we wanted to talk some brawl first, Lance, if
- 1:06Speaker 1: that's okay. Everyone saw the video of the Braves and
- 1:10Speaker 1: Angels brawling. Apparently, Ah, Jorge Solaire hits uh Raynaldo Lopez
- 1:19Speaker 1: really really well.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Then Tuesday night he hits a Homer and his neck's
- 1:23Speaker 2: that bad.
- 1:24Speaker 1: He got plunked, and then Lopez comes in and high
- 1:28Speaker 1: on another pitch and there's some talking. Next thing you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: punches are being thrown. Not sure if any landed. Both
- 1:37Speaker 1: guys got suspended. They're appealing. One guy had his suspension
- 1:41Speaker 1: shortened already. But my question is, lance, as I watched
- 1:45Speaker 1: this video and I know you did, is where's the catcher?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Him?
- 1:51Speaker 3: The catcher?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Right now?
- 1:54Speaker 1: We're so we're we're we're used to seeing YACHTI running
- 1:59Speaker 1: the show, right, But if you're you're a former major
- 2:03Speaker 1: league pitcher and Solayer is a big man, he's a
- 2:07Speaker 1: giant guy, you could probably do some damage.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And this was my question watching it.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The catcher is supposed to get in between you and
- 2:17Speaker 1: the guy who's trying to hurt you if you're the
- 2:19Speaker 1: starting pitcher, and not be pushing from behind. So my
- 2:24Speaker 1: question is what should the role of a good catcher
- 2:27Speaker 1: be when a batter wants to beat up your pitcher?
- 2:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's that one's It was a weird
- 2:35Speaker 4: h the way it went down. It wasn't directly like hey,
- 2:37Speaker 4: after the ball you know went over his head or
- 2:40Speaker 4: you know, went high and tight that it went down.
- 2:43Speaker 4: It took a minute to get going. So the catcher
- 2:45Speaker 4: I think wasn't quite ready for it. You know, obviously
- 2:49Speaker 4: every you know, every catcher is their their goal is
- 2:52Speaker 4: to get in between them, make sure hold them back
- 2:54Speaker 4: or whatever.
- 2:55Speaker 3: The way it went down, it was hard to you know,
- 2:58Speaker 3: you just didn't see it coming.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I guess, you know, they started chirping and then so
- 3:02Speaker 4: Laia was already gone before he could even get get
- 3:04Speaker 4: to him or get from behind the plate. So I'll
- 3:08Speaker 4: give him, I'll give him some grace on this one.
- 3:10Speaker 4: So Laria was out ahead of him, he's bigger than him,
- 3:13Speaker 4: and he was on a mission to get a hold
- 3:15Speaker 4: of Lopez. So that was that was a hard one
- 3:19Speaker 4: to get around and get in front of somebody. You know,
- 3:21Speaker 4: if somebody gets plunked and and there's the plays dead
- 3:24Speaker 4: and things like that, then you expected catcher to kind
- 3:27Speaker 4: of like, yeah, he was always great at coming out
- 3:28Speaker 4: and he would always get like out in front of
- 3:32Speaker 4: the home plate on the grass and stuff like that
- 3:34Speaker 4: and just make sure. But that one wasn't how that
- 3:37Speaker 4: one went down, So I'll give the catcher some grace there.
- 3:39Speaker 3: But yeah, those two go way back.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean they've been and they were in the same
- 3:42Speaker 4: division for a while a couple of different times. So
- 3:47Speaker 4: you know, as you said, he hits Ronaldo well, and
- 3:50Speaker 4: I know although as a teammate he doesn't like being
- 3:54Speaker 4: hit well. So he was trying to, you know, make
- 3:57Speaker 4: him uncomfortable. And that's usually what happens when when both
- 4:02Speaker 4: sides want to make sure the other one knows who's
- 4:05Speaker 4: in charge.
- 4:07Speaker 1: So Lopez keeps the ball in his hand, which is
- 4:12Speaker 1: an option. There's a weapon, I yes, and never really
- 4:15Speaker 1: seen that, but you've I don't know if you've had
- 4:17Speaker 1: guys charge them at them, but from a picture standpoint,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I've seen it go.
- 4:21Speaker 2: You throw a glove at him.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Some guys, you see the picture, let the batter's momentum
- 4:28Speaker 1: take you know, and kind of sidestep and take them
- 4:30Speaker 1: out that way. What's the best option for a picture
- 4:35Speaker 1: when they know they're about to be.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Charged, You know, it just depends on what you are.
- 4:41Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Usually usually if you are a fighter, you're probably gonna
- 4:47Speaker 4: meet him halfway and be ready for it.
- 4:50Speaker 3: There's ones that want no part of it.
- 4:52Speaker 4: They usually are a backpedal and make sure the catcher
- 4:54Speaker 4: or third basement first baseman like get there before to
- 4:58Speaker 4: make sure, no one gets to them. So it's all
- 5:00Speaker 4: about what what's your what your intentions are, and what
- 5:03Speaker 4: you're trying to do. So you know, for me, my
- 5:06Speaker 4: favorite one I think I ever saw was, well you
- 5:10Speaker 4: have like the back of the day going Ryan with
- 5:13Speaker 4: venture just headlocking him, going for it. If that would
- 5:16Speaker 4: be what I would go for, walking to him and
- 5:18Speaker 4: being like, all right, let's do this, and then wrapping
- 5:21Speaker 4: him up.
- 5:21Speaker 3: And go down.
- 5:21Speaker 4: And then Farnsworth what Farnsworth like just decleted somebody chasing
- 5:25Speaker 4: like coming at him one time too, So those are
- 5:27Speaker 4: probably my favorite two. The way that the pitchers go
- 5:31Speaker 4: so no helmets, snow bats, no gloves, snowballs, That's the.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Way I would go about it.
- 5:35Speaker 4: It's you versus me, if we're going to do this,
- 5:37Speaker 4: and then we'll we'll figure out how to get get
- 5:40Speaker 4: it get it from there.
- 5:42Speaker 1: See that's me. I'm just hoping that catch your intervenes quickly.
- 5:45Speaker 3: The other thing, you're the backs to the back of
- 5:48Speaker 3: the mound.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Catcher grabs them, third baseman, first baseman, you guys, you
- 5:51Speaker 4: guys got it.
- 5:52Speaker 3: And then are you that guy that like runs and
- 5:53Speaker 3: jumps in at the end when they got him down?
- 5:56Speaker 2: What I would do is once the guy's secure ustance.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Yeah, once the guy's secured, then I pretend I really
- 6:03Speaker 1: wanted a piece of them, you see, and I see
- 6:05Speaker 1: a lot of pictures doing that.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Has your chance, Yeah, I like So.
- 6:10Speaker 4: One of my favorite ones too is Joe Kelly and
- 6:13Speaker 4: I think it was awesome from the Yankees back in
- 6:15Speaker 4: the day when he met him and that boy was
- 6:17Speaker 4: that boy was bigger than Joe and Joe they stood
- 6:21Speaker 4: up and they did it right there.
- 6:22Speaker 3: So respect to Joe for that one. He was like, Hey,
- 6:25Speaker 3: let's do this, Let's do it.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And Joe Kelly's Fight Club was born right there, still
- 6:30Speaker 1: selling T shirts for that. How about that Wilson Contreras
- 6:35Speaker 1: h we know him as a Cardinals now with the
- 6:37Speaker 1: Red Sox. We'll see him this weekend. We'll talk more
- 6:39Speaker 1: about that in a minute. But Wilson is a fiery
- 6:44Speaker 1: guy and they're Red Socks are facing the Brewers, and
- 6:50Speaker 1: the Brewers have a history of plunking Wilson Coon Treer's
- 6:53Speaker 1: twenty four times they've done it. He got hit by
- 6:56Speaker 1: Woodruff six time.
- 6:57Speaker 2: That guy has hit him. So this is what Wilson's that's.
- 7:00Speaker 1: After the game, he said next time they hit me,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna take one of them out. That's the message.
- 7:07Speaker 1: You know Wilson pretty well. He's a scary guy, isn't he.
- 7:13Speaker 4: If he said it a minute, I'm gonna say that, yes,
- 7:19Speaker 4: if he if he gets hit again, he's not going
- 7:22Speaker 4: to let those words not be true.
- 7:25Speaker 3: So it's gonna be interesting.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think they'll face each other again
- 7:28Speaker 4: this year, so that's good for him in the league
- 7:32Speaker 4: and all that in case it does go down. But yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 4: I mean, I think in his career he's been hit
- 7:36Speaker 4: by Milwaukee pitching more than any team by a lot.
- 7:41Speaker 3: And then so yeah, he's just over it.
- 7:43Speaker 4: When you play in that division that long as he has,
- 7:45Speaker 4: you're gonna have beef. And Milwaukee's his team that he'd
- 7:48Speaker 4: bet swiss. And it's kind of crazy because his brother's
- 7:50Speaker 4: the catcher, So who's he taking out? Usually you go
- 7:52Speaker 4: after the catcher, you know, so you know, as you
- 7:55Speaker 4: get to try to whoop his little brother's ass when
- 7:58Speaker 4: he gets hit again. I don't really know how it's
- 8:00Speaker 4: going to go down, but somebody, I mean, you saw
- 8:02Speaker 4: him on the slide in a second like that's Hey,
- 8:04Speaker 4: you got to keep hitting me, I'm going to get somebody.
- 8:07Speaker 4: And he got the you know, the you know, the
- 8:09Speaker 4: infielder at second, so he means what he says. And yes,
- 8:13Speaker 4: when you get hit that many times, you can take
- 8:15Speaker 4: it personal, like it's Woodroff is a good enough picture
- 8:18Speaker 4: where you you shouldn't be hitting someone that much. So
- 8:24Speaker 4: I think John Lackett used to say, it's like, is
- 8:26Speaker 4: it not on purpose? It might not be, but you
- 8:29Speaker 4: know you're good enough not to hit me, So you're
- 8:32Speaker 4: just coming in there carelessly because you don't care if
- 8:34Speaker 4: you hit me. And there's so that's kind of where
- 8:37Speaker 4: he's at. It's like, okay, if you don't care if
- 8:38Speaker 4: you hit me, and you do hit me, I don't
- 8:40Speaker 4: care if I hurt one of your guys. And he
- 8:41Speaker 4: let everybody know that, and you understand that because he's
- 8:44Speaker 4: been hitting the hand and miss time and this all
- 8:46Speaker 4: that like you're taking you know, food off his table
- 8:48Speaker 4: by keep plunking him to and he's tired of it.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Now there's a time and place for retribution.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I remember when Wilson was with the Cardinals, he seemed
- 8:57Speaker 1: to intimate that some of the pictures should have taken
- 9:00Speaker 1: care of him and answered back when he gets plunked. Now,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I know for a fact, because I know a lot
- 9:06Speaker 1: of guys that don't play anymore who have told me
- 9:08Speaker 1: they're not going to tell tales. But managers we all
- 9:11Speaker 1: know have instructed them plunked this guy. They don't come
- 9:14Speaker 1: and they don't say in so many words, but that
- 9:18Speaker 1: direction is pretty clear.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Have you do you had you ever been told to
- 9:23Speaker 2: do that?
- 9:23Speaker 1: Or is that something that Lanceln would do because he
- 9:26Speaker 1: knows it's the right thing to.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Do when you're When you're younger, you get instructed on
- 9:33Speaker 4: how to navigate a ballgame the way that you should,
- 9:38Speaker 4: and then you get older you learn to do what
- 9:42Speaker 4: you think is right when you need to do it
- 9:43Speaker 4: at certain times. So I had it both ways in
- 9:47Speaker 4: my career where I was able to be taught how
- 9:50Speaker 4: to navigate a ballgame in a series and a situation,
- 9:54Speaker 4: and then was able to learn from that and take
- 9:56Speaker 4: care of the ballgame and situations on my own as
- 10:00Speaker 4: I got older.
- 10:02Speaker 3: In my in my career.
- 10:04Speaker 4: So you know the nice words that you say, you know,
- 10:07Speaker 4: is this, hey, let's make this guy feel this, or
- 10:11Speaker 4: you know that was said to me one time and
- 10:13Speaker 4: then another one was uh, I want you to put
- 10:17Speaker 4: a hole through this motherfucker. So you know, it's it
- 10:22Speaker 4: is what it is. So that's that's how it kind
- 10:25Speaker 4: of goes down.
- 10:26Speaker 1: As I say, that's baseball. But we all know sometimes
- 10:30Speaker 1: the direction comes down from the manager, and the manager
- 10:33Speaker 1: will deny it and deny it and deny it, but
- 10:36Speaker 1: it happens and it's part of baseball. Did you have
- 10:39Speaker 1: a player in particular in your career that you didn't
- 10:42Speaker 1: get along with that there might have been a little
- 10:44Speaker 1: of that brushback or accidental meaning that that happened more
- 10:50Speaker 1: than on one occasion.
- 10:53Speaker 4: No, I never, like, like, there wasn't a guy where
- 10:56Speaker 4: it's like, hey, I'm going to hit him because he's
- 10:57Speaker 4: hitting me. Like that was never my mindset. If you're
- 11:00Speaker 4: like own me in a sense, hey, that's that's on
- 11:03Speaker 4: me to get you out. So I'm not gonna You know,
- 11:06Speaker 4: there's guys that I wanted to make feel uncomfortable inside,
- 11:09Speaker 4: but I'm not throwing it in there to hit him
- 11:11Speaker 4: on purpose or anything like that, because they you know,
- 11:13Speaker 4: if you leave it out over, they do you damage.
- 11:15Speaker 4: So I've never plunked anyone. I think the only person
- 11:19Speaker 4: I ever really got just pissed off.
- 11:22Speaker 2: At was uh.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Para. He was with what Diamondbacks for a long time.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Then he got me.
- 11:31Speaker 4: He got me in Colorado, like one road deep in Colorado,
- 11:34Speaker 4: and I was like, man, I'm over this guy. That
- 11:37Speaker 4: was the only guy I was like, I think I'm
- 11:38Speaker 4: gonna hit him next time. Never did, but I was like,
- 11:40Speaker 4: I just he just deserves one in the kneecap.
- 11:42Speaker 3: I don't really know what.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Else to do, but I didn't because I was like,
- 11:46Speaker 4: you know, what if that's how you're gonna get him out,
- 11:48Speaker 4: or you know if that's what you got.
- 11:49Speaker 3: To do, because you can't get him out, that's bullshit.
- 11:51Speaker 3: So I didn't do it. But that was my mic.
- 11:54Speaker 4: This guy just made I just needed to make him
- 11:55Speaker 4: feel something because he just finds the barrel with my
- 11:58Speaker 4: pitch whatever I throw, but never hit him.
- 12:02Speaker 1: But the biggest beef I think from from hitters. Even
- 12:06Speaker 1: if you plunk them intentionally, most of them understand that's
- 12:09Speaker 1: the game. They just don't want it in the in
- 12:11Speaker 1: the danger era, as you mentioned something that could sideline
- 12:14Speaker 1: them and take food off their table, that's when you
- 12:16Speaker 1: get the reaction.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Right, Oh yeah, I see, I think I got I
- 12:20Speaker 4: got justin up in one year in Texas in the
- 12:23Speaker 4: hand when I was literally I was trying to throw
- 12:25Speaker 4: a fastball like up and away for you know, swing through,
- 12:28Speaker 4: and I had the shooter that armside that ran into
- 12:31Speaker 4: his hand. I was like, after the game, I saw
- 12:33Speaker 4: him a botto of Don Julio and told him, my bad.
- 12:36Speaker 4: You know, if you hurt a guy on a hand
- 12:37Speaker 4: or something like that, it's like, hey, my bad. You
- 12:40Speaker 4: know it wasn't on purpose, but you know I got
- 12:43Speaker 4: to be better than that. So you definitely want to
- 12:45Speaker 4: don't want to go up top. You want to say
- 12:47Speaker 4: away from hands and head. That's that's that's what I
- 12:50Speaker 4: was told from me. It was always aim at the
- 12:52Speaker 4: hip because if it rides a little high, you get
- 12:54Speaker 4: the ribs you did real good. And if it goes
- 12:56Speaker 4: a little low, you get meat of the you know,
- 12:58Speaker 4: you get meat of the leg. Which you know, if
- 13:00Speaker 4: you get them good and get a nice little Charlie
- 13:02Speaker 4: worse in the leg, and you know they both they
- 13:05Speaker 4: both are felt the same. A little hitchhot doesn't feel
- 13:07Speaker 4: good either.
- 13:09Speaker 2: That's true. That's true. All right.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Well, the Cardinals just finished up a road trip. They
- 13:14Speaker 1: played very well on that road Trip. There's still two
- 13:16Speaker 1: games over five hundred, I think, exceeding a lot of
- 13:19Speaker 1: expectations because they always seem to battle back. They got
- 13:23Speaker 1: the Red Sox this week and we're gonna talk more
- 13:25Speaker 1: about that after the break. You're watching Cardinal Territory on
- 13:29Speaker 1: the found Territory Network.

- 14:35Speaker 1: Cardinals back home to face the Red Sox this weekend,
- 14:39Speaker 1: starting tomorrow. In the opener, it's a commonly early going
- 14:43Speaker 1: for the Socks. Dustin May goes for the Cards. It'll
- 14:46Speaker 1: be his third start as a Cardinal. First two lance
- 14:49Speaker 1: have not been good for May. Now, this guy's a veteran.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Doubles some injuries, but we know when he's healthy, the
- 14:56Speaker 1: guy can pitch. But now he's coming back from me.
- 15:00Speaker 1: That was kind of so so looking to it. Reinvent
- 15:02Speaker 1: himself had an outstanding spring and the first two starts
- 15:06Speaker 1: not good. You're a guy who's been around pitching a
- 15:09Speaker 1: long time, even a sort of veteran like May. Is
- 15:13Speaker 1: he feeling pressure now? That is this a because I
- 15:16Speaker 1: heard someone say this is a big start for dust
- 15:18Speaker 1: to May. It's early in the season, rebuilding year. I'm
- 15:20Speaker 1: not so sure it's a big start, or is it?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Am I do I have it wrong.
- 15:24Speaker 4: It's it's not it's not a big start, but it's
- 15:27Speaker 4: a it's a feel good start.
- 15:29Speaker 3: You need one of those. You know, you don't want
- 15:32Speaker 3: to have three bad ones in a row.
- 15:33Speaker 4: You don't want to you know, you look up and
- 15:36Speaker 4: April's behind you with a with just just trash right,
- 15:40Speaker 4: like just no feel no no confidence and all that.
- 15:43Speaker 4: So you know, it's not a make or break start,
- 15:45Speaker 4: it's a hey, we need it. We need to have
- 15:47Speaker 4: some positive like if he can get if we can
- 15:49Speaker 4: get him through five into the sixth inning, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 4: don't don't push him that extra inning today or you know,
- 15:56Speaker 4: like don't push him in an extra anything. This start
- 15:59Speaker 4: where it feels good to move on to the next one.
- 16:01Speaker 4: So it's like a it's a building block start, I guess,
- 16:04Speaker 4: and kind of forget.
- 16:04Speaker 3: The last two. Let's get back to what we do,
- 16:07Speaker 3: what you know how to do.
- 16:09Speaker 4: And you know it's hey, it's like you say veterans stuff,
- 16:11Speaker 4: but you know, I had he has only had one
- 16:13Speaker 4: year over he has a career year last year in
- 16:15Speaker 4: innings pitch at one hundred and thirty, so he's he's
- 16:18Speaker 4: still got a lot of you know, he's had some success, yes,
- 16:23Speaker 4: and had some playoff success and stuff like that, but
- 16:25Speaker 4: I putting it together over a full season is what
- 16:28Speaker 4: he's trying to prove right now. So it's a it's
- 16:30Speaker 4: a feel good start to start building that block, to
- 16:32Speaker 4: show him like, hey, I can make thirty starts, I
- 16:35Speaker 4: can throw one hundred and sixty to one hundred and
- 16:37Speaker 4: eighty innings and you know, I'll be thirty years old
- 16:40Speaker 4: and really like show people that I can be a
- 16:44Speaker 4: really good major league pitcher and be accountable and be
- 16:47Speaker 4: and be on the mound and you know, and and
- 16:50Speaker 4: be active. That's what he's trying to prove this year.
- 16:52Speaker 4: So I would say it's a we'll call it. We'll
- 16:55Speaker 4: call it a building We need a building block. Feel
- 16:57Speaker 4: good start coming up, all right?
- 16:58Speaker 2: I like that.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I like that Crumby start for the Red Sox, but
- 17:02Speaker 1: a really good start for the Cardinals. And Jordan Walker
- 17:05Speaker 1: who's good in the homestand continues it. He's homeward in
- 17:09Speaker 1: Ford of his last five games. He's got five homers
- 17:11Speaker 1: on the season. And this is a guy who had
- 17:14Speaker 1: six homers all of last year. This is a guy
- 17:16Speaker 1: who was up and down last year trying to find
- 17:19Speaker 1: that stroke. They simplified it, as Bran Brown said, they've
- 17:23Speaker 1: reached a great agreement on how to get Jordan back
- 17:27Speaker 1: where they're letting him do a lot of the stuff
- 17:29Speaker 1: that he wanted to do, what he's comfortable doing. But
- 17:33Speaker 1: they've also changed his body stance a little bit based
- 17:36Speaker 1: on data. To me, lance, he just looks like a
- 17:40Speaker 1: more confident guy. We knew he could hit because we
- 17:42Speaker 1: saw it in his first year in the big leagues,
- 17:45Speaker 1: but to me, he looks like a completely different hitter.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Confidence is huge in baseball. I mean, this is one
- 17:52Speaker 4: of the most negative games you can ever play.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:54Speaker 4: You can go, you know, you can get out seven
- 17:56Speaker 4: out of ten times and you're like, man, what a
- 17:58Speaker 4: great what a great ten at that stretch that he had,
- 18:01Speaker 4: because you were had three hits, But you're like, you
- 18:03Speaker 4: got out seven of the other other times. So it
- 18:05Speaker 4: can be negative at all times. So I love what
- 18:09Speaker 4: they're doing in the sense of, hey, what are you
- 18:12Speaker 4: comfortable with and how can we integrate what we think
- 18:15Speaker 4: can help you and what you're comfortable with together. And
- 18:18Speaker 4: I think that's been the thing that's really been kind
- 18:20Speaker 4: of holding him back his first year. He had success,
- 18:23Speaker 4: they wanted more home runs in the ball in the air.
- 18:25Speaker 4: So now it's like change everything, and then you get
- 18:28Speaker 4: lost in this game.
- 18:29Speaker 3: You can get lost quick.
- 18:30Speaker 4: So they're giving the building blocks and then you slowly
- 18:33Speaker 4: build on the top of it. And then also, when
- 18:35Speaker 4: you're comfortable, you can worry about what the pitcher's trying
- 18:38Speaker 4: to do and actually incorporate an approach. When you're uncomfortable
- 18:42Speaker 4: and searching, you can't have an approach. You're trying to
- 18:44Speaker 4: figure out how what feels good to stand in the box?
- 18:46Speaker 4: Where's my hands, where's my when's my land leg hit?
- 18:50Speaker 3: Where where's my batpath? You have to be?
- 18:52Speaker 4: And you're like, by the time you're done with it,
- 18:54Speaker 4: the ball's by you and you're in the dugout going
- 18:57Speaker 4: like what just happened? And that's where you've been in
- 19:00Speaker 4: the last two years, to be honest with you, because
- 19:02Speaker 4: he's been.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Searching for everything that everybody wants him to do.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Figure out the player you are, and then you figure
- 19:09Speaker 4: out how to build on top of that. And I
- 19:10Speaker 4: think that's what he's finally done. And when you have
- 19:13Speaker 4: the lack of success he's had the last two years
- 19:15Speaker 4: at the major league level, you can learn a lot,
- 19:17Speaker 4: and I think he has. And then now it's like,
- 19:19Speaker 4: all right, I'm going to be me, but also figure
- 19:21Speaker 4: out all these things that they're trying to do, and
- 19:22Speaker 4: I can integrate a little bit. Hey, maybe he found
- 19:25Speaker 4: some things that didn't work for him, so now I
- 19:26Speaker 4: will never try him again, and that could be a
- 19:28Speaker 4: good building buck moving forward to him too.
- 19:30Speaker 3: So I like George's a good kid.
- 19:34Speaker 4: It was one of those things where everybody thought that
- 19:37Speaker 4: he should be a forty home run guy because he's big, right,
- 19:39Speaker 4: But he was twenty one years old and the big
- 19:42Speaker 4: leagues or even younger when he first came up. It's like,
- 19:44Speaker 4: you don't expect those guys to hit thirty home runs
- 19:47Speaker 4: and what at nineteen home runs his rookie year. If
- 19:50Speaker 4: he just stayed the same, that would have been twenty five, right,
- 19:52Speaker 4: just because he got bigger and more experience and all that.
- 19:54Speaker 4: But they've changed everything and then he just digressed because
- 19:57Speaker 4: of it. So hopefully this is a huge pine, you know,
- 20:01Speaker 4: the comfort or the comfort of building everything together and
- 20:04Speaker 4: having someone that he trust and be like, hey, this
- 20:06Speaker 4: is what I like to do. Now tell me how
- 20:08Speaker 4: to integrate the things you like with what I like
- 20:10Speaker 4: to do, and then he'll become a good player.
- 20:12Speaker 1: That guy's Casey Chennan with who was a double A
- 20:15Speaker 1: hitting coach you Jordan liked a lot, and now he's
- 20:17Speaker 1: with the big league club. So that's certainly a support
- 20:20Speaker 1: system built in for Jordan. One of the things we've
- 20:23Speaker 1: seen outside Jordan is that this team battles back. And
- 20:27Speaker 1: you know they talk about starting pitchers when there's no
- 20:29Speaker 1: offense kind of maybe get a little tight, knowing one mistake.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Will cost him.
- 20:34Speaker 1: When you know that your team could come back from
- 20:38Speaker 1: a four run deficit, which we've seen the Cardinals do.
- 20:40Speaker 2: What does that do for a starting pitcher? Uh?
- 20:44Speaker 4: You know, for me as a starter, I never worried about,
- 20:47Speaker 4: uh what the offense was doing. You know, if you're
- 20:49Speaker 4: worrying about them, then you're you're not doing what you
- 20:51Speaker 4: need to do. But yes, when you know that, hey,
- 20:55Speaker 4: even if I get down, these boys aren't gonna quit
- 20:57Speaker 4: on me. They're gonna stay with me. They're gonna do
- 20:59Speaker 4: everything they can, and they got a lot of fight.
- 21:00Speaker 4: They're young and hungry man, and young and hungry baseball
- 21:04Speaker 4: players are are fun to watch and they and they
- 21:07Speaker 4: and you can't count them out. And that's what you're
- 21:09Speaker 4: that's what you're seeing early on is they've got guys
- 21:12Speaker 4: that are trying to show everyone that they're major leaguers.
- 21:14Speaker 4: They're trying to you know, get their career rolling, doing
- 21:19Speaker 4: the things they need to do. They're buying in. So
- 21:21Speaker 4: it's fun when you see young and hungry baseball players
- 21:24Speaker 4: play because there's no there's no you know, there's no
- 21:27Speaker 4: give up.
- 21:27Speaker 3: And that's the beauty. And when I mean when i'll
- 21:30Speaker 3: he'se your manager.
- 21:30Speaker 4: You're not going to have any get up, give up
- 21:32Speaker 4: because he's not going to allow you to have give up.
- 21:34Speaker 3: So I'm loving what I'm seeing. The energy. They're never
- 21:37Speaker 3: out of it.
- 21:38Speaker 4: You know, even when they get you know, slapped in
- 21:40Speaker 4: the face late in the game, they bounce back the
- 21:42Speaker 4: next game or the same game at some point.
- 21:44Speaker 3: And maybe even that the bottom half of that inning.
- 21:46Speaker 4: So there's no there's no whate was me games over
- 21:50Speaker 4: right away just because we gave up four or five.
- 21:52Speaker 3: It's like, okay, watch this. So that's fun.
- 21:55Speaker 1: In the bullpen, which you know, had taken its lumps
- 21:59Speaker 1: in some of the games that they didn't win, seems
- 22:02Speaker 1: to have corrected course to me. Swanson is a really
- 22:06Speaker 1: good pitcher. He was excellent last year. He's one of
- 22:08Speaker 1: those guys that had been a bullpen guy in the minors,
- 22:11Speaker 1: so he knows how to do it. But he got
- 22:13Speaker 1: hit around a lot we saw in his last outing.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Good and that seems still solidify the bullpen because now Ali,
- 22:20Speaker 1: you know, based on usage, can spread things out and
- 22:23Speaker 1: use guys where he thinks he'll have the most success.
- 22:26Speaker 2: And that's a good sign, isn't it.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Yeah, And the flow of the season is going to
- 22:30Speaker 4: dictate the things that you need to Early on in
- 22:32Speaker 4: the year, you're trying to fill guys out, feel what
- 22:34Speaker 4: they can handle, especially when you have a young bullpen.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:37Speaker 4: He had some success last year, but this is his
- 22:39Speaker 4: first full year. First opening week, you know, first everything
- 22:42Speaker 4: for real, and when you come up you're kind of
- 22:45Speaker 4: just piecing it together and figuring out how to how
- 22:48Speaker 4: to stay there. Now, when you make the opening day roster,
- 22:51Speaker 4: it's like, hey, there's a different expectation you put on yourself,
- 22:55Speaker 4: which might be unnecessary. You seem to kind of go
- 22:57Speaker 4: do what you did before. So hopefully this first week
- 23:00Speaker 4: everybody finds the rhythm. Alli finds the rhythm how he
- 23:03Speaker 4: wants to use guys. He can kind of pick their
- 23:05Speaker 4: brain a little bit, what makes them feel good when
- 23:06Speaker 4: they win, to bring them in if they're the start
- 23:09Speaker 4: of the inning guy, or if they are a guy
- 23:11Speaker 4: that can come in and get you out of an inning.
- 23:13Speaker 4: You know, you just find how those guys tick. And
- 23:15Speaker 4: it takes a minute. It's not spring training is like
- 23:18Speaker 4: all everyone's like, oh, they should already know that. It's like, no,
- 23:20Speaker 4: in spring training, you get clean innings. You know you
- 23:23Speaker 4: already when you show up that day, you know you're
- 23:25Speaker 4: scheduled to pitch the fourth, fifth, sixth inning in a
- 23:28Speaker 4: big league game, it's you know, hey, you're going to be,
- 23:30Speaker 4: you know, a bridge guy.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Are you're going to be this today? And then you're
- 23:33Speaker 3: going to find those guys out.
- 23:34Speaker 4: Let them have a little success, and then you can
- 23:35Speaker 4: figure out who you's going to be your fireman and
- 23:37Speaker 4: if we got to get out of a six and
- 23:38Speaker 4: then can he come back out for the seventh. And
- 23:41Speaker 4: these young guys are trying to figure that out at
- 23:42Speaker 4: the big league level, always trying to figure them out
- 23:44Speaker 4: to see how they tick and what they can handle.
- 23:46Speaker 4: And they also are going to have to push them
- 23:48Speaker 4: a little bit to see what they're capable of. And
- 23:50Speaker 4: that's going to be the fun thing that happens this year.
- 23:53Speaker 4: It's going to have some lumps. Like you said, there's
- 23:55Speaker 4: gonna be more lumps, but that's what you happen when
- 23:58Speaker 4: you have a young team that's trying to.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Show what they're capable of it. There's gonna be.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Things you're like, oh that was that worked out? Great,
- 24:04Speaker 4: he's found his rhythm. But then you try a little
- 24:06Speaker 4: something else, give him more of a leverage situation. It
- 24:08Speaker 4: might not go well, but you got to do it
- 24:10Speaker 4: again because you gotta see if you can handle it
- 24:11Speaker 4: and see if he can be somebody for you, especially
- 24:13Speaker 4: down the stretch or maybe even next year when you're
- 24:15Speaker 4: trying to you know, win the division and things like that.
- 24:17Speaker 3: You got to help build them up. So it's gonna
- 24:19Speaker 3: be a fun little ride. But there's gonna be some mumps.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, there's bumps, But if you have a young team
- 24:24Speaker 1: that's gonna always try to punch back, I think fans
- 24:27Speaker 1: will get on board. Hopefully we see some decent crowds.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Lance we started our program with some baseball talk. We
- 24:33Speaker 1: circled nicely back to the Cardinals, and that's gonna do
- 24:36Speaker 1: it for us. Great job, Lance, and that's gonna do
- 24:39Speaker 1: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you
- 24:42Speaker 1: next time for the next episode, and hopefully that one
- 24:44Speaker 1: won't suck.
