Ep. 360 - The Religion of Self-Care Guarding Against the Self-Obsessed Wellness Culture · The Living Waters Podcast

• 1:04
SPEAKER_06: Wellness culture has its own creeds.
• 1:06
  SPEAKER_06: You are enough.
• 1:07
  SPEAKER_06: Listen to your truth.
• 1:08
  SPEAKER_06: Uh, prioritize yourself.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_06: Do you see hear how anti-gospel that is?
• 1:13
  SPEAKER_06: Prioritize yourself.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_06: It has its own liturgies with fitness apps and morning routines and spa rituals where it's like if you gotta, you know, you want to be equal and balanced with yourself.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_06: Here's, hey everyone, here's my morning routine.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_06: If I don't get this, I'm just not gonna be a good wife or mother.
• 1:31
  SPEAKER_06: It's like that.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_06: Your morning routine is a worship of self.
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_06: It's a liturgy.
• 1:35
SPEAKER_06: It has its own priests and prophets with influencers and gurus and celebrities with their own companies, with their own things to purchase.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_06: It has its own salvation.
• 1:46
SPEAKER_06: The promise that if you stay youthful, somehow you will find peace, you'll live forever, you'll be at one with yourself, whatever the case.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_06: And so these this language, again, there's nothing wrong with taking care of your body per se.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_06: But when that becomes your salvific story, when that consumes you and replaces your worship of the Lord, that is when a good thing becomes an ultimate thing.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_05: I thought I knew what misery was, but my understanding of misery has been recalibrated after traveling with Ken Ham and Lalo Gunther.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_05: Those guys are miserable guys.
• 2:45
  SPEAKER_08: You know what?
• 2:46
SPEAKER_08: Caveats was because who they were traveling was.
• 2:51
  SPEAKER_05: That's what it was.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_05: All right, that's all I wanted to say, friends.
• 2:54
  SPEAKER_05: Oh man, seriously.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_05: It's it's one of those things where um, yeah, you just love the person so much, you're irritated by them.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_05: I finally realized what VIP means for Ken Ham.
• 3:05
  SPEAKER_05: Very irritating person.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_05: What do you say in Oscar point and oh, nothing?
• 3:08
  SPEAKER_05: You're describing the podcast.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_08: Innocently there with your New Mexico showed uh six hours sitting next to him all the way to John McCarthy's funeral during the funeral.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, we went to the funeral together.
• 3:18
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 3:18
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 3:19
  SPEAKER_05: Miserable guy.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_05: Was there more than that, or was that just uh really good story, right?
• 3:23
SPEAKER_05: You should take what I've given.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_05: I was next to him.
• 3:26
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 3:27
SPEAKER_05: So anyway, uh one of the irritating things Ken Ham did while we were traveling is he began to impersonate a horse race announcer.
• 3:37
  SPEAKER_08: That was good.
• 3:38
SPEAKER_05: Oh, were you there when he did that?
• 3:39
SPEAKER_08: I was in the car.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_05: Oh I thought it was when I was when when we were I was traveling with some kind of stage.
• 3:47
  SPEAKER_05: That's right, Ray.
• 3:48
SPEAKER_05: I wanted to see out the window.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_05: In the baby, the baby car seat.
• 3:53
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 3:53
SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, and he but he did that.
• 3:58
  SPEAKER_05: It was right on.
• 3:59
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, what in the world is it with that though?
• 4:02
  SPEAKER_05: We talked about auctioneers.
• 4:03
SPEAKER_05: Remember you guys thought we talked about auctioneers, but this is different than auctioneers.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_02: Because auctioneers are like ones, come on twice, bam, little lady in the back.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_05: You would be good at that.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_05: Would I be good at that?
• 4:17
SPEAKER_08: With the with the horse racing guys, what they do is they build up until they cross the line and it pulls you in emotionally.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_05: But they they do it at this, like, and you have uh big fat yellowtail in the inside, on the outside is snorting horse, and then on the funky names.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_05: There was one, I was watching this video, and the one horse was called My Wife is Always Right.
• 4:41
  SPEAKER_05: This was Australian?
• 4:42
SPEAKER_05: Uh no, it was I don't know what it was.
• 4:43
SPEAKER_05: Oh but but let me know.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_08: So do they do the same in America with Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby?
• 4:48
  SPEAKER_08: Well, yeah.
• 4:48
  SPEAKER_08: They build up.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_08: I mean, we're the ones known for the first time.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_01: There's a famous race where the commentators going back and forth mentioning all the different names, and it was just absolutely ridiculous.
• 4:55
SPEAKER_01: No, seriously, these names they have, they're they're hilarious.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_06: One of my favorite horse names is our horse, which is easy.
• 5:02
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_05: Named your horse after me.
• 5:05
SPEAKER_05: We named you after and you whip the horse, right?
• 5:07
  SPEAKER_05: That's why.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_05: But you know, I was watching one of those horses, horse races, and I I wonder, this was an older one, but I wonder if it's changed today because the the jockey was whipping the horse.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_05: You know, yeah, they used to whip them a lot.
• 5:18
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 5:18
  SPEAKER_05: They don't anymore?
• 5:19
  SPEAKER_08: Probably not.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_08: Save their horses would get upset.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they they they hit them with tasers now.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_05: Oh, why has he got ahead?
• 5:29
  SPEAKER_05: 50 feet, another 50 feet.
• 5:31
SPEAKER_05: It's easier on the hide.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_05: Serious, I can imagine that.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_05: Like under under the holster.
• 5:35
SPEAKER_05: Oh, not the holster, the uh what do you call that thing?
• 5:39
  SPEAKER_05: Holster.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_05: What do you call that thing?
• 5:41
  SPEAKER_05: They sit on saddle.
• 5:42
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they had under the saddle a little shocker and then holding a little thing in the reins.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_05: That's kind of what spurs are.
• 5:49
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 5:50
  SPEAKER_05: You're right.
• 5:51
  SPEAKER_05: That's right.
• 5:51
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_05: So anyway, Ken Ham's pathetic.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_05: So this is this is what Ken Ham sounds like when he tries to do horse race announcing.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_00: One out one back, wing minute twenty, and on the inside, three back, blue round.
• 6:07
  SPEAKER_05: Is that Ken?
• 6:18
SPEAKER_05: Sounds like they couldn't afford it.
• 6:20
  SPEAKER_05: There you have it.
• 6:22
SPEAKER_05: Um is that big in Australia, Ray?
• 6:24
  SPEAKER_05: Horse racing.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_08: Well, I haven't been to Australia for 30-something years, but it yeah, it's a big part of the culture.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_08: It's like Kentucky with a Kentucky Derby, that sort of thing.
• 6:30
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_08: A lot of money on it.
• 6:33
  SPEAKER_05: I know Oscar.
• 6:34
  SPEAKER_08: I rode a horse once.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_08: My sister, without giving me any training, sat me on the saddle of her horse when I was about 18 and just slapped it on the back and I went from about a mile down the beach.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_08: And you can get killed on those things.
• 6:44
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
• 6:44
SPEAKER_08: If you don't know what you're doing.
• 6:46
  SPEAKER_06: Took out Superman.
• 6:47
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 6:47
  SPEAKER_08: That's so.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_08: Wait, was that a horse?
• 6:49
SPEAKER_08: Was that a horse riding instead?
• 6:50
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it stopped and he went over a fence and broke his neck, and that was horrific.
• 6:54
  SPEAKER_08: Wow.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_06: I've been able to herd cattle on a horse, which is super.
• 6:56
  SPEAKER_08: I've heard cattle.
• 6:57
  SPEAKER_08: They go.
• 6:59
SPEAKER_05: I think one of my biggest fears, seriously, is to get kicked in the head by a horse.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_06: We can make it happen.
• 7:05
  SPEAKER_05: Easy kicks easy.
• 7:08
SPEAKER_06: Can you imagine how many views we get on YouTube for that?
• 7:11
  unknown: Good thinking.
• 7:12
  SPEAKER_05: His wheels are turning.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_05: Seriously, it's made of like, ah, yeah, easy head kicked, yeah.
• 7:17
SPEAKER_05: No more son-in-law, you know.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_05: Uh Mark, you ever ridden a horse?
• 7:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think one time down in Mexico.
• 7:25
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's where I rode a horde.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_05: Well, I wrote along the beach.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_05: Those horses are barely alive.
• 7:31
  SPEAKER_05: Those poor horses, man.
• 7:32
  SPEAKER_05: They are emaciated.
• 7:35
SPEAKER_05: They're dragging them down the beach.
• 7:37
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I got yeah, I remember seeing someone get thrown off a horse in Mexico on the beach, you know, under the water.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_06: Since we're talking about horses, I gotta give a shout-out to my wife.
• 7:46
  SPEAKER_06: She grew up.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_06: She grew up riding and showing Western and has national awards, uh, and now she trains horses.
• 8:02
SPEAKER_06: And I've seen her get on like the wildest bucking horse and control it and comment now.
• 8:07
  SPEAKER_06: So that's my wife.
• 8:10
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_05: Wait, so what kind of horse riding though?
• 8:12
  SPEAKER_05: Is it like street?
• 8:13
SPEAKER_06: She grew up doing Western Western dressage, I think is what it's called.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_06: Um, and now she does English, which is like the traditional tall black boots, not like if you think Western it's cowboy.
• 8:25
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_06: English is the the other one.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_05: But I mean, is it what like is she dancing the horse around?
• 8:29
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_05: Jumping the horse, stuff like that.
• 8:31
SPEAKER_06: But she can do it all.
• 8:32
  SPEAKER_06: Really?
• 8:33
  SPEAKER_06: She's she trains horses.
• 8:35
SPEAKER_06: The horse does some of the work.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_05: I'm blown away, seriously, by horses.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_05: I mean, this is a massive strong beast.
• 8:45
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
• 8:45
  SPEAKER_05: It only eats hay.
• 8:46
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 8:47
  SPEAKER_05: They don't eat meat.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_08: It doesn't actually like all of that muscle, and they don't eat meat.
• 8:51
SPEAKER_08: Oh, I'm gonna start a new diet.
• 8:53
  SPEAKER_08: Coffee and hay.
• 8:54
  SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
• 8:55
  SPEAKER_05: What alfalfa or whatever?
• 8:57
SPEAKER_08: Seriously, every time we sit watch a cowboy movie, which we do a lot, I am absolutely in awe about horses.
• 9:02
SPEAKER_08: They go down really steep mountains, mountainsides, and s they run through water without any fear.
• 9:08
  SPEAKER_05: Fantastic action.
• 9:09
  SPEAKER_08: Just amazing.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_08: And they're just the right shape for a human body to sit on.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_08: It's got a little curve there, and you can break their spirit, and it's just incredible.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_08: I don't know how people just evolution is so amazing.
• 9:21
SPEAKER_05: I'd like to put Ray up on an elephant and leave him there.
• 9:24
SPEAKER_01: Would you eat horse if you're in some foreign country and that's all they say?
• 9:27
SPEAKER_06: Okay, I if if I wasn't married to my wife, yes.
• 9:31
  SPEAKER_06: Matter of fact, yeah.
• 9:32
  SPEAKER_06: I I think you just weren't cooking?
• 9:35
SPEAKER_06: She would be so sad.
• 9:36
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 9:36
SPEAKER_06: It's like kind of like when I was in Peru and they had guinea pigs, and I really wanted to.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_06: Don't even talk about this.
• 9:41
SPEAKER_06: But my daughter has a guinea pig and I couldn't.
• 9:44
SPEAKER_05: Wait, they seriously eat guinea pigs?
• 9:45
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, like chicken.
• 9:46
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, you're kidding.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_06: And I really wanted to try some, but I could I knew I was gonna get asked by Evie if I had guinea pig, and I didn't want to tell her yes, so I opted out.
• 9:55
SPEAKER_06: But if it wasn't for my wife, yeah, I tried to.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_05: Did you eat a cat, Oscar?
• 9:58
  SPEAKER_06: Just the heart.
• 9:59
  SPEAKER_08: No, just I don't know.
• 10:01
  SPEAKER_08: We got female listeners.
• 10:02
SPEAKER_08: We at the thought of a guinea pig really makes me feel sick, but I'll eat a pig.
• 10:07
  SPEAKER_08: Right.
• 10:10
SPEAKER_06: Did you eat a pig named Guinea?
• 10:14
  SPEAKER_06: That's terrible.
• 10:16
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and Mark, don't they use I thought they use horses for dog food.
• 10:20
SPEAKER_05: Is that I heard the same.
• 10:21
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_08: Did you ever hear the hear of the movie They Shoot Horses, don't they?
• 10:25
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_08: It's a very famous movie, and it was just horrible.
• 10:29
SPEAKER_08: And the whole movie was about horses.
• 10:31
SPEAKER_08: And in the no, in the 19 in the 1930s, that whenever people were really poor, they'd have contests where people would dance for days, and the last couple standing got the money.
• 10:42
  unknown: Wow.
• 10:43
SPEAKER_08: And they people died doing that.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, because they so wanted the money that and the whole movie was about that.
• 10:48
SPEAKER_08: It was just depressing and horrible.
• 10:49
  SPEAKER_08: Wow.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_08: And they said the whole thing they shoot horses, don't they?
• 10:53
SPEAKER_08: In other words, if a horse is suffering, you put it out of its misery, but you let people do that for three days, just dancing to the point where they felt.
• 11:01
  SPEAKER_01: It's based off a book.
• 11:02
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_05: Join us for the next episode, friends, when Oscar Navarro eats a lion.
• 11:08
  SPEAKER_05: I eat a lion.
• 11:10
SPEAKER_05: You would get so busted, Oscar.
• 11:12
SPEAKER_06: Oh, you're not allowed to?
• 11:13
  SPEAKER_05: Lion?
• 11:13
SPEAKER_05: Have you seen that the controversies with that?
• 11:16
  SPEAKER_05: Even people shooting lions.
• 11:17
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, never mind.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_06: I would not eat lions.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_08: Would you eat it raw?
• 11:20
  SPEAKER_08: Ugh.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_08: No, that's the different rule.
• 11:23
  SPEAKER_08: R-O.
• 11:26
  SPEAKER_05: All right, friends.
• 11:28
SPEAKER_05: Time for a cool classy comment.
• 11:30
SPEAKER_05: This is from Stephen Corpy.
• 11:32
  SPEAKER_05: Hey, Franz, he says.
• 11:36
  SPEAKER_05: It's mockery.
• 11:37
  SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
• 11:37
SPEAKER_05: Thanks, y'all, for letting God use you.
• 11:40
SPEAKER_05: Just a suggestion: the Living Water store should add some bumper stickers.
• 11:43
SPEAKER_05: Very thankful for y'all and praying for you all, especially praying for your singing.
• 11:48
  SPEAKER_05: Easy.
• 11:49
SPEAKER_05: Thank you for letting God use you.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_05: Easy to write that book.
• 11:52
  SPEAKER_05: Such a blessing.
• 11:53
  SPEAKER_05: Thanks, Stephen Corbett.
• 11:56
SPEAKER_08: I would like a bumper sticker that says, don't read bumper stickers.
• 11:59
  SPEAKER_06: Ooh.
• 11:59
SPEAKER_06: Well, you mean a good bumper sticker that says hit me for good news?
• 12:03
SPEAKER_06: Because then you share the gospel with them.
• 12:05
  SPEAKER_08: Oh, great.
• 12:06
  SPEAKER_05: Oh.
• 12:10
SPEAKER_05: Thank you, Steven, and thanks for uh mentioning Fight Like a Man.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_05: And believe it or not, friends, that's a radically revolutionary resource for today.
• 12:16
SPEAKER_05: This podcast is brought to you by Fight Like a Man, a bulldocle battle plan for a personal PRD.
• 12:20
  SPEAKER_05: Yes, Ray.
• 12:21

• 12:24
  SPEAKER_05: You bounced Ray's book.
• 12:26
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, I forgot.
• 12:28

SPEAKER_02: Today it's the ultimate health foods.
• 12:36

SPEAKER_08: Don't you tell me what to do.
• 12:41

• 12:49
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, there's pictures.
• 12:50
  SPEAKER_03: There's pictures.
• 12:52
SPEAKER_05: Oscar, did you have to say that?
• 12:54
SPEAKER_05: I'm so hungry right now.
• 12:55
  SPEAKER_05: Are you?

• 13:11
  SPEAKER_08: He helped me, yeah.
• 13:11
SPEAKER_08: He helped me in that.
• 13:13
SPEAKER_08: But there was another book that he did called Divine Dining.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_08: That's the one I'm probably referring to.
• 13:17
SPEAKER_08: That was a cool one.
• 13:18
SPEAKER_08: Which we should have here today, too.
• 13:19
  SPEAKER_08: Divine Dining.
• 13:20
SPEAKER_05: I shot that at Thomas Bertel's house.

SPEAKER_08: How did I get involved in this?
• 13:58
SPEAKER_02: And if I let him marry my daughter.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_06: Go into full-time ministry, they said.
• 14:01
SPEAKER_05: And don't forget, friends, the podcast YouTube channel, channel, channel.
• 14:05
  SPEAKER_05: Like and subscribe.
• 14:07
  SPEAKER_05: Please.
• 14:08
  SPEAKER_05: All right.
• 14:09
SPEAKER_05: Today, friends, we're talking about the religion of self-care, guarding against the self-obsessed wellness culture, of which Ray, Mark, and Oscar A are a part.
• 14:21
  SPEAKER_05: Um only partially.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_08: I don't think um is a good way to start a podcast.
• 14:25
  SPEAKER_05: Um, um, um.
• 14:26
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, guys, uh, this is a religion.
• 14:30
SPEAKER_05: I've always loved when I've always loved.
• 14:35
SPEAKER_05: I've always loved myself, but I've always loved when people who are apologists point out the fact that atheism is a religion, that evolution, those who are proponents of it, are really a part of a religion.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_05: And so I think we need to understand that religion takes on different forms, and one main one is when it has adherents that are so devoted, so dedicated to it, that basically their whole lives revolve around it.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_05: And uh, we are here today to talk about how this has happened with wellness.
• 15:11
SPEAKER_05: Look, we're all for wellness, we're all for health.
• 15:14
  SPEAKER_05: Oscar eats healthy.
• 15:15
  SPEAKER_05: Mark eats healthy.
• 15:16
  SPEAKER_05: Yes, I don't.
• 15:17
SPEAKER_05: Mark eats healthy Wiener Schnitzel hot dogs.
• 15:19
  SPEAKER_01: I had that yesterday.
• 15:20
SPEAKER_05: Okay, guys, I have to confess.
• 15:23
SPEAKER_05: And Rachel has been forcing to get.
• 15:25
SPEAKER_05: In fact, she took a picture and was gonna send it to Mark, and I stopped her.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_06: You had you had Wiener Schnitzel?
• 15:31
SPEAKER_06: I really like Wiener Schnitzel.
• 15:33
  SPEAKER_05: It's so good, dude.
• 15:34
  SPEAKER_05: Yes, I'm addicted.
• 15:36
  SPEAKER_06: It's so good.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_05: Okay, here you guys remember, look, I've always said it's good.
• 15:40
SPEAKER_05: You have to give me that.
• 15:41
  SPEAKER_05: I've never denied it's good.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_05: I just said I don't eat it because it makes me feel gross.
• 15:45
SPEAKER_05: You've denied it three times.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_05: But it but it doesn't it made you feel good, didn't it?
• 15:48
  SPEAKER_05: But it doesn't anymore.
• 15:49
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 15:50
  SPEAKER_05: So your body's maturing.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_05: But I I still have contentions with you guys on this because the only right way to eat Wiener Schnitzel hot dogs is chili cheese dog with pickles, mustard and ketchup.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_05: That is the you eat it any other way, you have a problem.
• 16:05
SPEAKER_05: You eat it another way, Oscar, don't you?
• 16:07
SPEAKER_06: I just go chili cheese dog, but I leave it wrapped for about seven to ten minutes after I order it because it gets all of everything nice and warm and melted, and then you unwrap that baby, you let the steam hit your face.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_05: You don't do mustard and ketchup and pickles?
• 16:21
  SPEAKER_05: No.
• 16:21
SPEAKER_05: You don't want to ruin it.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_05: Mark, you don't do that?
• 16:24
  SPEAKER_01: No, I mean, I like Oscar.
• 16:25
SPEAKER_01: Listen, I've spoken out against it, too.
• 16:27
SPEAKER_01: Uh Wiener Schnitzel, you know, quite a bit because of their ad campaign.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_01: And somebody had called me up and said, Mark, you you don't need to be legalistic about it.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_01: You know, if you want to enjoy a chili cheese dog from time to time, just go enjoy it.
• 16:40
  SPEAKER_01: So I've kidding, I'm kidding.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_01: So I have had it a couple of times since over the last six months.
• 16:44
  SPEAKER_01: Since this morning.
• 16:45
SPEAKER_05: Rachel's so mad at me that I'm liking it now.
• 16:47
SPEAKER_05: Because uh seriously, like I'll be I'll be out on my day off or something, I'll be like, oh.
• 16:50
SPEAKER_01: So why is she mad at you?
• 16:51
  SPEAKER_08: It's bad for it.
• 16:52
  SPEAKER_01: It's really oh yeah.
• 16:54
SPEAKER_01: I so my my go-to is two chili cheese dogs, a chili cheese fry and a cup of chili with no onions.
• 16:59
SPEAKER_01: Take the chili cheese dog, dip it inside the cup of chili.
• 17:01
  SPEAKER_01: Like that's such a tripping.
• 17:02
SPEAKER_01: Eat it with your shirt off so you can jump right into the shop and done it.
• 17:05
SPEAKER_01: But on the way to do it, have it heating up on the chair next to you with the seat warmer on.
• 17:10
SPEAKER_01: All those burn scars on his chest is from chili.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_05: Mark, you do you put onions on your no?
• 17:15
SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not an onion fan for chili cheese ketchup.
• 17:17
  SPEAKER_05: Okay, now we're now we're talking.
• 17:19
SPEAKER_05: All right, anyway, you got you guys need to try it with pickles, mustard, and ketchup.
• 17:23
SPEAKER_05: Seriously, it will change your life.
• 17:24
  SPEAKER_05: No, you do, Oscar.
• 17:25
SPEAKER_05: All right, don't they cancel each other?
• 17:27
SPEAKER_08: Don't they cancel each other?
• 17:28
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah, pickles, mustard?
• 17:30
  SPEAKER_08: No.
• 17:30
SPEAKER_05: Oh, now I'm so hungry, I want one.
• 17:33
SPEAKER_05: All right, so let's get back to the topic, guys.
• 17:35
SPEAKER_05: So obviously we're missing the topic.
• 17:39
SPEAKER_01: We don't even have we mentioned the title yet.
• 17:43
  SPEAKER_05: That's right.
• 17:44
SPEAKER_05: Guarding against the self-obsessed wellness culture.
• 17:47
SPEAKER_05: So, as you've heard, Franz, we eat uh Wiener Schnitzel.
• 17:50
SPEAKER_05: Ray, you eat bad food too sometimes.
• 17:52
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I've been to your house.
• 17:54
  SPEAKER_05: When your daughter cooked?
• 17:57
SPEAKER_08: It was when you cooked.
• 17:58
  SPEAKER_08: Peanut blackies.
• 17:59
SPEAKER_05: You want to talk about those, right?
• 18:00
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, she's got scars from that.
• 18:02
SPEAKER_08: There's something called peanut brownies, which are uh something part of the New Zealand culture.
• 18:06
SPEAKER_08: They've got peanuts in them and they're brown, but Rachel left it in the oven too long and it ended up to be peanut blackies.
• 18:12
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, she's never lived it down, but she's a wonderful cook.
• 18:15
  SPEAKER_05: Yes.
• 18:16
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so anyway, uh Mark, speak to this.
• 18:19
SPEAKER_05: The obsession, the absolute mesmerization with health, to where it really it it I mean, it reminds me of it.
• 18:27
  SPEAKER_05: It's unhealthy.
• 18:28
  SPEAKER_05: What's that?
• 18:29
  SPEAKER_05: It's unhealthy.
• 18:30
SPEAKER_05: It's unhealthy to be overly obsessed with being healthy.
• 18:33
SPEAKER_05: But you know, it's really become almost like the secular form of legalism, I would say, right?
• 18:39
SPEAKER_05: It's counterpart being in the church where people are just obsessed with certain things, but to where it's it's moved out of hey, this is what I enjoy doing, this is what's good for me, and it's and it's positive.
• 18:49
SPEAKER_05: And to where like people even become condemning toward others, that's one aspect of it.
• 18:54
SPEAKER_05: And the other we'll we'll talk about maybe you can touch on that, Oscar Ray, and that is the the idolatry that's involved with it.
• 19:00
SPEAKER_05: So, Mark, speak to the the element of the unhealthy aspect of it where it's become something people put on others.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_01: Well, it's when it becomes idolatrous, you know, that you just have to get your workout in, or you get angry at people because they're on a machine that you've been waiting to work out at the gym.
• 19:18
  SPEAKER_01: Uh obviously, yeah.
• 19:19
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it can be frustrating for sure, but it's when it becomes you're looking at the guy's side eye.
• 19:25
SPEAKER_01: Like, what are you doing?
• 19:26
SPEAKER_01: I remember I I saw a guy walk up to a guy saying, Hey, how many more texts do you have?
• 19:31
SPEAKER_01: Instead of how many more reps do you have?
• 19:33
  SPEAKER_01: How many more texts?
• 19:34
SPEAKER_01: Because the guy's just on his phone as he sits at a machine.
• 19:36
SPEAKER_01: Um it is important, body exercise, it profits a little, but it but it does profit.
• 19:42
SPEAKER_01: You know, I remember a friend came up to me and he he was um taking steroids, and he had said, How's he doing?
• 19:49
SPEAKER_01: He said, I I have an issue, right?
• 19:51
SPEAKER_01: That people look down on me because I take steroids, but you can have a 300-pound pastor.
• 19:59
SPEAKER_01: Nobody says a thing about him.
• 20:00
SPEAKER_01: Why are we not talking about gluttony?
• 20:02
SPEAKER_01: Why is gluttony the the silence and that nobody wants to discuss?
• 20:07
SPEAKER_01: Because I dare to say, even if you have a healthy weight and you look healthy, you can still be gluttonous, right?
• 20:13
SPEAKER_01: You could you could still overeat at that restaurant instead of one donut.
• 20:17
SPEAKER_01: You went for four donuts, but nobody's saying anything, you know, about that.
• 20:22
SPEAKER_01: So four donuts sounds pretty good.
• 20:24
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, especially if it's crispy cream.
• 20:26
SPEAKER_01: So there's got to be some sort of a balance, and each person needs to kind of find that area, that aspect.
• 20:32
SPEAKER_01: And if you do not treat food as medicine, it's been said, well, then medicine will be your food when you get older.
• 20:38
SPEAKER_01: We we need to take heart that these bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we need to stay active.
• 20:46
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 20:47
SPEAKER_08: Steroids are kill us, and so is obesity, but one doesn't justify the other.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say the same thing.
• 20:53
SPEAKER_05: It's like someone says, look, people are doing heroin, they're gonna on me for doing cocaine.
• 20:57
SPEAKER_05: It's like, yeah, uh that that's really good.
• 20:59
SPEAKER_08: I think Arnold Schwarzenegger said 20 more than 20 of his buddies uh are dead because they all took steroids.
• 21:07
  SPEAKER_08: He did too.
• 21:08
  SPEAKER_08: He's not dead, he's not dead.
• 21:09
  SPEAKER_08: He's not dead.
• 21:10
SPEAKER_08: No, I'm saying he took steroids as well.
• 21:12
SPEAKER_08: I'm not sure, but I think he did.
• 21:13
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, he definitely did.
• 21:14
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh I get accused of that all the time.
• 21:17
  SPEAKER_06: Being dead?
• 21:18
  SPEAKER_06: No.
• 21:23
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's good.
• 21:24
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but you know, we we've done an episode on OB City.
• 21:27
  SPEAKER_05: You guys remember that?
• 21:28
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and uh OB City?
• 21:30
  SPEAKER_05: Sounds like OBC.
• 21:32
SPEAKER_05: Sounds like something something from Star Wars.
• 21:39
SPEAKER_05: Uh but but no, but you know what?
• 21:40
  SPEAKER_05: That's a good point.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_05: In fact, today uh I was on Facebook and and a sister that I know put out a post about how she's addicted to food.
• 21:49
SPEAKER_05: And it was we all are.
• 21:51
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but but it was so if you don't have food.
• 21:55
  SPEAKER_05: Right.
• 21:56
SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, but carry on easy.
• 21:57
SPEAKER_08: I hate it when people bite in.
• 21:59
  SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, right.
• 21:59
  SPEAKER_05: Do you hate it?
• 22:00
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, right.
• 22:01
SPEAKER_05: But she was it was precious because she was doing it for like accountability, saying, hey, this is I'm a sinner and I need accountability.
• 22:09
SPEAKER_05: I need to change this, you know.
• 22:11
SPEAKER_05: And so, but but Mark, that is a good point.
• 22:13
SPEAKER_05: Like, there are certain things that we know that are sinful that aren't touched on, and we call them the respectable sins, right?
• 22:20
SPEAKER_05: You know, and obesity is a sin.
• 22:22
SPEAKER_05: Uh, I'm sorry, not obesity, gluttony, gluttony.
• 22:25
SPEAKER_05: Ah, that's what I meant to say on gluttony.
• 22:27
  SPEAKER_05: That's what I gluttonia.
• 22:29
  SPEAKER_05: The Italian way.
• 22:30
  SPEAKER_05: Glutone.
• 22:31
SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry, it wasn't on obesity, it was on gluttony, which usually leads to obesity.
• 22:37
SPEAKER_05: Um you can start a whole new language, but no, yeah, but gluttony is a sin, and that is when you're overindulging.
• 22:45
SPEAKER_05: That's when food becomes becomes an idol.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_05: That's when food becomes a god, and scripture speaks that, and their god is their belly, right?
• 22:51
  SPEAKER_05: It's a great word.
• 22:52
  SPEAKER_05: Glutton.
• 22:53
  SPEAKER_05: Gluttony.
• 22:54
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you can't say that gently.
• 22:56
  SPEAKER_07: No.
• 22:56
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm involved in gluttony.
• 22:59
  SPEAKER_05: Gluttony.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_05: But but there is the flip side of that, and and that is where we've seen people anorexia who go into eating disorders and you get become anorexic.
• 23:09
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 23:09
SPEAKER_06: So there's there's a few things going on here, and you're absolutely right.
• 23:12
SPEAKER_06: On the reality is that there's a a balance between two things, and that um, like to your friend's point, I would say that, yeah, that's not okay to have a pastor who appears to be gluttonous, and that's you know, assuming there's no health issues that is preventing him from losing weight, because that's a factor as well.
• 23:33
SPEAKER_06: But um, I do think there's two extremes.
• 23:35
SPEAKER_06: There's the extreme of not taking care of yourself, of showing up dis disheveled, which is not honoring, it's a distraction.
• 23:42
SPEAKER_06: But then there's the extreme of being obsessed.
• 23:45
SPEAKER_06: And when I think of self-care, I when I when you when I saw the title, I was thinking less about working out and more about like the self-care of youthfulness.
• 23:57
SPEAKER_06: Um, and and I love that you used easy the phrase of um like it's a religion.
• 24:04
  SPEAKER_06: You're absolutely right.
• 24:05
SPEAKER_06: And for somebody that might be, you know, you hear atheists push up against that accusation all the time.
• 24:10
SPEAKER_06: Here's the reality is that it is in our nature, every single one of us was created to worship.
• 24:18
SPEAKER_06: And so when you let's call us all worshipers, we are all made to worship.
• 24:22
SPEAKER_06: The the the as Luther put it, the question isn't whether or not you are worshiping, the question is what are you worshiping?
• 24:31
SPEAKER_06: And when you gather a group of worshipers together with a collective idol, you know what you get?
• 24:38
  SPEAKER_06: A religion.
• 24:39
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and that's what self-care does.
• 24:41
SPEAKER_06: It's created a religion, and you have like wellness culture has its own creeds.
• 24:45
SPEAKER_06: You are enough, listen to your truth, uh, prioritize yourself.
• 24:50
SPEAKER_06: Do you see hear how anti-gospel that is?
• 24:53
  SPEAKER_06: Prioritize yourself.
• 24:55
SPEAKER_06: It has its own liturgies with fitness apps and morning routines and spa rituals where it's like if you got it, you know, you want to be equal and balanced with yourself.
• 25:04
SPEAKER_06: Here's, hey everyone, here's my morning routine.
• 25:07
SPEAKER_06: If I don't get this, I'm just not gonna be a good wife or mother.
• 25:11
SPEAKER_06: It's like that your morning routine is a worship of self.
• 25:14
  SPEAKER_06: It's a liturgy.
• 25:15
SPEAKER_06: It has its own priests and prophets with influencers and gurus and celebrities with their own companies, with their own things to purchase.
• 25:23
SPEAKER_06: It has its own salvation.
• 25:26
SPEAKER_06: The promise that if you stay youthful, somehow you will find peace, you'll live forever, you'll be at one with yourself, whatever the case.
• 25:35
SPEAKER_06: And so these this language, again, there's nothing wrong with taking care of your body per se.
• 25:42
SPEAKER_06: But when that becomes your salvific story, when that consumes you and replaces your worship of the Lord, that is when a good thing becomes an ultimate thing.
• 25:56
SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's so good, Oscar.
• 25:58
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and it all really finds its root in the kind of self-centeredness, the egocentricity that we live by.
• 26:08
SPEAKER_05: Because the thought is not what can I do to glorify God?
• 26:13
SPEAKER_05: It's what can I do to glorify myself?
• 26:15
SPEAKER_05: It's not what can I do to serve others, it's what can I do to serve me.
• 26:20
SPEAKER_05: And that's evidenced because a lot of times people who are into that aren't often invested in the kingdom of God.
• 26:27
SPEAKER_05: Because really their whole life is bound up in the way that they look and what that gets them and the way that they feel versus at times self-denial for the sake of blessing other people.
• 26:40
SPEAKER_05: You know, I mean, man, the Christians were known back in church history for fasting and sharing their meals with others.
• 26:49
SPEAKER_05: Like they were fasting, they were praying, but they were taking what they would have spent on on their food or or on their own needs and blessing others with it.
• 26:59
SPEAKER_05: So I think we we can't I think we can't get blinded by the apparent virtue of self-care to the point of recognizing that there's sin in it.
• 27:10
SPEAKER_05: Like because there it looks like a virtue.
• 27:12
SPEAKER_05: Man, that guy takes care of himself.
• 27:13
SPEAKER_05: He's really wealthy, he's fit, he's healthy, she really just except Oscar.
• 27:17
SPEAKER_05: And they don't get to, but but there is sin involved in that.
• 27:21
SPEAKER_01: So where where do we go to stop treating our body as an idol and start treating it as an altar?
• 27:30
SPEAKER_01: Look in the mirror, right?
• 27:31
SPEAKER_01: But where where do we find that balance where we present our bodies as a living sacrifice?
• 27:36
  SPEAKER_01: Right?
• 27:36
SPEAKER_01: Because what we're talking about right now is we're treating our body as an idol, not as an altar.
• 27:41
SPEAKER_01: So how do we make that transition, even if it's a baby step into the right direction?
• 27:45
SPEAKER_01: I think it's the revelation that the idol is dying.
• 27:49
SPEAKER_08: The out when man is perishing, and when man is renewing day by day.
• 27:52
SPEAKER_08: Um, I'd like to ask super healthy freaks that spend like 25 hours a day in the gym and eat everything that tastes horrible because they want to be healthy.
• 28:00
  SPEAKER_08: What's your aim?
• 28:01
SPEAKER_08: Do you want to die healthy?
• 28:03
  SPEAKER_08: Is that your aim?
• 28:04
  SPEAKER_08: Because that's what's gonna happen.
• 28:06
SPEAKER_08: Everybody dies, hardly anyone lives after 85.
• 28:09
  SPEAKER_08: Is that your aim?
• 28:11
SPEAKER_08: And so they ignore the inner man because they glorify the outer man.
• 28:16
SPEAKER_08: Um, I I was uh I was reading something this morning about a professor who found out that human beings can live up to 20,000 years old.
• 28:27
SPEAKER_08: Not a thousand years, but he says we have potential to live to 20,000 years.
• 28:32
SPEAKER_08: So I started delving into it and finding out what he's saying.
• 28:34
SPEAKER_08: This is in Scientific American, and he was saying the problem is at the molecular level.
• 28:41
SPEAKER_08: All we have to do is change the molecule, but we don't know how to do that.
• 28:47
SPEAKER_08: So I thought I'm gonna find out who this guy is because he had a foreign name.
• 28:50
SPEAKER_08: So I found him on on uh online, found a um a video of him giving his his testimony, just had a picture of him, it was just audio, and what he said was very revealing.
• 29:02
SPEAKER_08: I only had to listen to it for about three minutes.
• 29:04
SPEAKER_08: He just said, I'm terrified of dying.
• 29:07
SPEAKER_08: And that's what's the basis of it.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_08: And what you've got to do is just face it.
• 29:10
SPEAKER_08: You're gonna die every time you look in the mirror, your thing is everything's degenerating and get right with God, and that solves the problem because he grants everlasting life.
• 29:19
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and that's what we should be doing as Christians telling people that just give up.
• 29:24
SPEAKER_08: Give up because you're gonna die and give your life to Christ.
• 29:27
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and he'll fix that problem.
• 29:29
SPEAKER_05: Well, it's what Jesus spoke to.
• 29:30
SPEAKER_05: You know, you try to save your life, you'll lose it.
• 29:32
SPEAKER_05: You lose your life for his name's sake, you're gonna find it.
• 29:34
SPEAKER_08: And I saw another video this morning, and it was just so good for the first 15 minutes.
• 29:39
SPEAKER_08: It was a guy talking about sunlight and how incredible it is.
• 29:43
SPEAKER_08: And he gave a testimony of this young guy, he's 15 years old.
• 29:46
SPEAKER_08: He uh got skin oh, skin cancer?
• 29:49
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, skin cancer, and he was dying in and then his something attacked his his lungs, ate away his lung, they removed his lung.
• 29:55
  SPEAKER_08: He's only 15 years old, and he's dying.
• 29:57
SPEAKER_08: The doctor said to his parents, he's got two days to live.
• 30:00
SPEAKER_08: And so they said, What's your last wish to this young kid?
• 30:03
SPEAKER_08: He says, Take me outside.
• 30:04
SPEAKER_08: I just want to be outside.
• 30:05
SPEAKER_08: They put him in sunlight, and he came right within about three days.
• 30:09
  SPEAKER_05: Oh wow.
• 30:10
SPEAKER_08: And that's all he needed.
• 30:11
SPEAKER_08: And they said, and he said years ago, when people were in hospitals, they put them on the on the balconies with the sun shining on them.
• 30:18
SPEAKER_08: And said, It's well known in a hospital.
• 30:20
SPEAKER_08: The patient who's next to the sunlight by the window leaves that hospital first.
• 30:25
  SPEAKER_08: Amazing.
• 30:25
SPEAKER_08: And he said it's the vitamin D, and you can't replace it with tablets, vitamin T tablets, they're good.
• 30:30
SPEAKER_08: But he said it's just sunlight because it contains so much good in it, which is just incredible.
• 30:35
SPEAKER_08: So anyway, I watched it for 15 minutes, gave up when this guy put on a mask that put infrared light onto your face so that you look a little younger.
• 30:46
  SPEAKER_08: I thought, I'm not doing that.
• 30:47
SPEAKER_05: Are you talking about the guy, that guy Brian Johnson?
• 30:50
SPEAKER_05: Uh well, you guys have heard of him.
• 30:51
  SPEAKER_05: He this guy.
• 30:52
  SPEAKER_08: Well, no, I think he's No, that's not him, but I know he's a man.
• 30:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this is a guy who used to be a Mormon and then came came out of all that and stuff, but he's he was really wealthy.
• 31:00
SPEAKER_05: He owned, he owned a very big company sold.
• 31:02
  SPEAKER_05: He's a billionaire.
• 31:03
SPEAKER_05: He's trying to live forever.
• 31:04
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he spell yeah he's he spends two million dollars a year or something like that.
• 31:07
  SPEAKER_05: I think it's more than that.
• 31:08
  SPEAKER_05: Is it?
• 31:09
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but but it's constant, like he's got his whole house has become like a clinic.
• 31:13
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 31:14
SPEAKER_05: He sleeps in like that.
• 31:16
SPEAKER_08: Would he shake hands with you?
• 31:17
SPEAKER_05: If he met you, he probably wouldn't.
• 31:20
SPEAKER_05: He's like totally regimented, sleeps a certain time, gets up his whole life.
• 31:23
  SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're they're studying him.
• 31:24
SPEAKER_05: Didn't he get hit by a bus?
• 31:27
  SPEAKER_05: I know.
• 31:27
SPEAKER_05: Can you imagine you do all that and then boom, you're gone.
• 31:29
SPEAKER_05: But I think that's an example, right, of someone who who's taken it to that degree of like trying to earn you know immortality and try to defy really the curse in a sense.
• 31:44
  SPEAKER_08: That's right.
• 31:45
  SPEAKER_05: I know.
• 31:45
  SPEAKER_05: I know.
• 31:46
SPEAKER_05: In fact, I said this last night because people always ask me, you know, my dad lived 113.
• 31:50
  SPEAKER_05: What was the secret?
• 31:51
SPEAKER_05: I usually say having me as a son, but what right what are you asking?
• 31:54
SPEAKER_08: This would be a point in time in this podcast where we drop on those pictures you have of your dad.
• 31:59
SPEAKER_08: I love the way you do it.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_08: We said, Do you want to see a picture of my dad?
• 32:01
SPEAKER_08: See how long he lived?
• 32:02
SPEAKER_08: Just give us a little.
• 32:04
  SPEAKER_05: I start I start with 104.
• 32:05
SPEAKER_05: Because at 104 I started taking pictures.
• 32:07
  SPEAKER_05: Nobody believes it.
• 32:08
  SPEAKER_05: It's a birthday cake with 104.
• 32:10
  SPEAKER_05: What?
• 32:11
SPEAKER_05: So every year I take a picture with them holding the birthday cake and you know with the candles on and the age, and they go, 104?
• 32:16
  SPEAKER_05: That's crazy.
• 32:17
  SPEAKER_05: And then I flip 105.
• 32:18
  SPEAKER_05: What?
• 32:19
  SPEAKER_05: 106, 107, 108, 109.
• 32:21
SPEAKER_05: And they're like flipping out with each one, you know.
• 32:24
  SPEAKER_05: It's wonderful.
• 32:25
SPEAKER_05: And he's getting younger and younger in the picture.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_05: So we can we can slip.
• 32:28
SPEAKER_05: Shrinking shorter and shorter per se.
• 32:30
  SPEAKER_08: What's wrong with that?
• 32:30
SPEAKER_08: We could slip those into this podcast.
• 32:32
  SPEAKER_08: I think it's just awesome.
• 32:34
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, remind me, guys, we'll do that.
• 32:35
SPEAKER_05: I want to go back.
• 32:36
  SPEAKER_05: Sorry, Banner.
• 32:37
SPEAKER_05: Oh, so I was just gonna say from now on when people say, What was the secret?
• 32:39
SPEAKER_05: I'm just gonna say sugar.
• 32:42
  SPEAKER_05: Sugar cigars, sugar.
• 32:44
SPEAKER_08: And he used to go for a walk.
• 32:45
SPEAKER_08: He used to walk a lot.
• 32:46
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
• 32:47
SPEAKER_05: Because you guys remember we wouldn't let him get his license.
• 32:49
SPEAKER_01: Well, he played Frogger a lot.
• 32:50
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he would.
• 32:51
  SPEAKER_05: You'd see him, right?
• 32:52
SPEAKER_05: He don't always get hit by cars.
• 32:53
  SPEAKER_08: In Bonanza.
• 32:54
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, he loved bonanza.
• 32:55
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so that's the key to longevity.
• 32:57
SPEAKER_08: Watch bonanza and go for walks.
• 32:59
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 32:59
SPEAKER_05: You were gonna say Mark?
• 33:00
  SPEAKER_05: Sorry.
• 33:01
  SPEAKER_05: Who is talking about?
• 33:02
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, Oscar.
• 33:02
SPEAKER_06: I was gonna um go back to Mark's question, which I don't remember anymore.
• 33:07
SPEAKER_06: No, but uh yeah, I guess it's like, well, what is the difference between somebody caring about health and fitness and someone becoming idolatrous?
• 33:15
SPEAKER_06: And the the secret is motivation.
• 33:17
  SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
• 33:17
SPEAKER_06: Uh it's what is your aim?
• 33:18
  SPEAKER_06: I think it's two things.
• 33:19
SPEAKER_06: It's one motivation, and two, what defines your view of beauty.
• 33:24
SPEAKER_06: And so motivation, starting with that one, for example.
• 33:28
SPEAKER_06: Uh, if you work out like I I work out and uh I lift weights and I care about my I care about those things, but my main focus right now at 41 years old, as I tell my wife, is I want to keep muscle mass on because I want to be a healthy grandparent that is involved with my grandchildren.
• 33:46
  SPEAKER_06: Amen.
• 33:46
SPEAKER_06: I want to be a healthy father, I want to be healthy in my older age, to love on my wife well.
• 33:52
SPEAKER_06: Like my goal is to serve and be present, serve the Lord and be present through my body.
• 33:58
  SPEAKER_08: I I got a little testimony here.
• 34:00
SPEAKER_08: About five years ago, Julia, one of your daughters, was in our pool our room out there.
• 34:05
  SPEAKER_05: Remember Julius Caesar?
• 34:09
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Caesar, right?
• 34:10
SPEAKER_05: Start calling her Julius Caesar.
• 34:12
  SPEAKER_08: Anyway, I I don't care.
• 34:15
  SPEAKER_08: So I didn't tell that joke.
• 34:17
SPEAKER_08: It wasn't until 10 years after Caesar stopped that Caesars Caesar stopped that I made that joke, but I did think of it.
• 34:24
SPEAKER_08: Anyway, I was telling her when I was in my surfing days when I was about 15 or 16, and you're gonna laugh at this, but would give when girls haven't started yet, you're gonna mock with us.
• 34:35
SPEAKER_08: When girls walk past, I'll be sitting on the beach and I'd lean my arm onto my knee to expand the actual bicep as they went past.
• 34:44
SPEAKER_08: Because if you do that properly, it looks twice as big.
• 34:47
SPEAKER_08: So I went to show Julia what I used to do, and nothing happened when I put the bicep on my.
• 34:52
  SPEAKER_08: I thought, I don't have any biceps.
• 34:54
SPEAKER_08: But this is where the interesting part comes in.
• 34:56
SPEAKER_08: Since I started the carnivore diet, my muscle mass has increased.
• 35:00
  SPEAKER_08: Really?
• 35:00
SPEAKER_08: I have my biceps are bang.
• 35:01
  SPEAKER_08: Biceps are bang.
• 35:02
  SPEAKER_08: Almost said sex.
• 35:03
  SPEAKER_08: My biceps are bang.
• 35:06
  SPEAKER_08: Um prove it.
• 35:08
SPEAKER_08: Oh, I don't want to rip my shirt.
• 35:10
SPEAKER_06: For those who can't see it, it looks like a bee sting.
• 35:15
  SPEAKER_08: Pimple, I'll get it.
• 35:16
SPEAKER_08: Um yeah, but I've noticed it.
• 35:18
  SPEAKER_08: It's just amazing.
• 35:19
SPEAKER_08: The muscle mass has come back.
• 35:20
  SPEAKER_08: So it does work.
• 35:22
SPEAKER_06: So so the first motivation, like the first thing is motivation.
• 35:25
SPEAKER_06: Why are you uh intending to be a healthy person to honor the Lord?
• 35:30
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 35:30
  SPEAKER_06: Sure.
• 35:31
SPEAKER_06: Uh the second, the second one is defining beauty.
• 35:35
SPEAKER_06: If we take our perception or understanding of beauty from culture, then as a prime example, right now, beauty is youthfulness.
• 35:45
SPEAKER_06: But it's important to recognize not all cultures thought that way.
• 35:49
SPEAKER_06: Matter of fact, a lot of ancient cultures found beauty in people who like a mother and a husband, someone who had wisdom and experience.
• 35:58
SPEAKER_06: They found beauty in gray hair and wrinkly eyes.
• 36:01
SPEAKER_06: And so the point is that what defines our view of beauty, and if you're allowing culture to define your beauty, then you're gonna go to no ends to try to match what culture is telling you that beautiful looks like, versus understanding what God how God views beauty.
• 36:18
SPEAKER_06: When you see yourself through the lens of God, beauty is probably gonna look a lot different than when culture says beauty.
• 36:25
SPEAKER_08: And it's during the Renaissance, you see some of those paintings of women, they're all plump.
• 36:29
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's another great example.
• 36:31
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and that's another word, Renaissance, Renaissance.
• 36:34
  SPEAKER_08: Renaissance?
• 36:35
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, who's Renee?
• 36:36
SPEAKER_05: Well, are you gonna pick on plum?
• 36:37
  SPEAKER_05: Renaissance.
• 36:40
SPEAKER_05: You know, Oscar, I I love what you highlighted about like your family.
• 36:44
  SPEAKER_05: I think that's one consideration, right?
• 36:45
SPEAKER_05: Not just not just from the standpoint of I want to take care of my family and be there for them.
• 36:52
SPEAKER_05: That's one of the things that motivated me a while back to get back in the gym was my grandsons, you know, I run around with them and stuff, and I I was feeling exhausted.
• 36:59
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, man, I want to have that energy.
• 37:01
SPEAKER_05: But I think another aspect too, in terms of thoughtfulness and selflessness, is the perspective of I don't want to be a burden to my children who are gonna have to look after me because I was negligent and irresponsible with my body.
• 37:14
SPEAKER_05: Again, there's that balance again when people become so obsessed with it and it becomes a religion, versus like, no, like scripture says, 1 Corinthians 6, 19 to 20, or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and you are not your own for your bot with at a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
• 37:33
SPEAKER_05: We don't belong to ourselves, we belong to the Lord.
• 37:36
SPEAKER_05: And and and there too, in the surrounding context, I mean, sexual immorality is being mentioned as well.
• 37:41
SPEAKER_05: So you know, sin ravages the body and abuse of the body, not being careful with things ravages the body, and then there are repercussions, you know, and we want to maximize our impact for God's glory, and we want to be there for our family, and we don't want to burden them also.
• 37:58
SPEAKER_05: Because there are, I mean, you know, look, we looked after my dad for 12 years.
• 38:01
SPEAKER_05: He l lived with us for 12 years, but it was a blessing that he was healthy relatively speaking, and so we looked after him because he got older, but it was it was a blessing to see that he did take care of himself.
• 38:14
SPEAKER_08: Was he on a restricted diet?
• 38:16
SPEAKER_05: You know, he I think he just had a natural propensity toward healthier foods.
• 38:20
SPEAKER_05: He just he didn't grow up in a time when you you you had junk food, so everything was natural.
• 38:25
SPEAKER_05: So he enjoyed natural foods, and but he wasn't fanatical, he had a sweet tooth, he'd eat things, you know, but but he was healthy in that way.
• 38:33
SPEAKER_05: He walked a lot, he was low stress, very jovial, laughed a lot, and surrounded with a lot of love.
• 38:39
SPEAKER_08: Every time he saw me, he'd be laughing.
• 38:41
SPEAKER_05: Remember, even my dad played basketball.
• 38:42
SPEAKER_05: Yes, the Arab and the Jew.
• 38:44
SPEAKER_08: And I someone put a picture of us playing, and I didn't realize I'd leaped so high, but it was photoshopped.
• 38:52
SPEAKER_08: Um, you know what keeps me temperant with this whole issue is Helen.
• 38:55
SPEAKER_08: The whole story of Helen.
• 38:56
SPEAKER_08: Let me share that testimony.
• 38:58
SPEAKER_08: There was a neighbor of ours many years ago named Helen, she was lived alone, and so we took her meals and we did it for I think seven years, and I'd I'd fry up eggs for her, and she just loved it.
• 39:08
  SPEAKER_08: She's a real sweetheart.
• 39:09
SPEAKER_08: And then she got really sick in her 90s, and uh they put her on a restricted diet: no salt, no milk, no cheese, no butter, no sweets, no sugar, no that.
• 39:19
SPEAKER_08: And she bes she looked sick, it looked like she was dying, which I think she was.
• 39:23
SPEAKER_08: And I said, Helen, what what would you like to do?
• 39:26
  SPEAKER_08: So I like a donut.
• 39:28
  SPEAKER_08: That's what she said.
• 39:28
SPEAKER_08: So I went out and got a whole stack of this junk food and gave it to her, and she was out of bed within two or three days because it just gave her a reason to live, and she lived too.
• 39:37
SPEAKER_08: I remember that what I said to her, I said, Helen, doctors have got you on a restricted diet, and I think doctors are great.
• 39:43
SPEAKER_08: Um, but doctors die in their mid-sixties, you're in your 90s, so let's just do your own thing and go out happy.
• 39:49
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and she did.
• 39:50
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, again, there's there's she choked on a donut.
• 39:53
SPEAKER_05: I was like, that would have been a great ending to that story.
• 39:57
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and look, Matthew 22, 37 to 39 when Jesus was talking about.
• 40:02
SPEAKER_05: Oh, beautiful scripture right now.
• 40:05
SPEAKER_05: With all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.
• 40:07
SPEAKER_05: You know, that there is that that giving over of of our strength and the love of the Lord in the right context.
• 40:15
SPEAKER_05: Like, and again, it goes back to motive, Lord, I do this for you and for your glory.
• 40:18
SPEAKER_05: But the obsession is real.
• 40:20
SPEAKER_05: The global wellness industry, guys, is now worth 5.6 trillion.
• 40:25
  SPEAKER_05: I saw that trillion.
• 40:27
  SPEAKER_05: What's that one industry?
• 40:29
  SPEAKER_05: The the wellness industry.
• 40:31
SPEAKER_05: Oh, yes, yeah, spas, supplements, fitness, meditation, apps.
• 40:35
  SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's all consuming.
• 40:37
SPEAKER_05: Look, part of me, it's cool to see that people are more conscious.
• 40:40
SPEAKER_05: Like back in the day, uh it's funny.
• 40:43
  SPEAKER_05: I saw a picture, I think, yesterday.
• 40:44
SPEAKER_05: It showed a guy dressed in a cigarette costume.
• 40:47
SPEAKER_05: This is back like during World War II, and he was in hospitals giving people cigarettes.
• 40:51
  SPEAKER_05: You know, really?
• 40:52
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, should have seen his face light up.
• 40:54
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 40:55
SPEAKER_05: So it's good to see that there's been a shift, but but it's gotten it's gotten out of out of whack for sure.
• 41:03
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 41:04
SPEAKER_05: So um what what about what about Oscar, the blending of the wellness industry?
• 41:11
SPEAKER_05: I like the way you used the word blending.
• 41:13
  SPEAKER_05: Blending with with paganism.
• 41:16
SPEAKER_05: I mean, in terms of like yoga and and even stuff like uh meditation, which we know have positive aspects, but there is that idolatry that actually goes into idolatry because it's connected to paganism.
• 41:29
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 41:29
  SPEAKER_05: In some sense.
• 41:30
SPEAKER_06: It's it's interesting if you trace the history of why those two things are blending together.
• 41:35
SPEAKER_06: And I think it really comes from Silicon Valley and the duck hop industry, because in the 90s and 2000s, um, Eastern religions was making was making its way through Silicon Valley.
• 41:47
SPEAKER_06: So all these guys that were starting app companies and websites, they were being heavily influenced by Eastern religions.
• 41:54
SPEAKER_06: And those are the same companies that are now building meditation apps.
• 41:58
SPEAKER_06: They're they make our phones, and so what they're doing is they're proming us, promising us salvation through Eastern religions, or the phrase that you just used, paganism.
• 42:10
  SPEAKER_06: And here's the reality.
• 42:11
SPEAKER_06: This is why um man, I think it's just it's so important to recognize that paganism is not this this paganistic way of looking at health and beauty, it's ultimately promising salvation, but giving you enslavement.
• 42:30
SPEAKER_06: It's actually just another form of legalism in which you have to do, do, do, earn, earn, earn.
• 42:38
SPEAKER_06: And the entire time, death, to your point earlier, Ray, is creeping up and it's going to take you away.
• 42:46
SPEAKER_06: Idolatry of self-care promises salvation, but it only gives us slavery and death.
• 42:52
  SPEAKER_06: We I quoted um It's a band-aid.
• 42:56
  SPEAKER_06: It is a band a band-aid.
• 42:57
SPEAKER_06: I quoted um David Foster Wallace before, which is when he says, Worship your own body and beauty and sexual allure, and you will always feel ugly.
• 43:05
SPEAKER_06: And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before your family finally plants you.
• 43:13
SPEAKER_06: And I guess the point is this is that eternal youth is not the hope that you're looking for.
• 43:19
SPEAKER_06: Eternal glory is the hope that you're looking for, and only that will satisfy your soul.
• 43:26
SPEAKER_08: Can you imagine if that professor was able to change the molecular structure of our uh whatever it is, our body?
• 43:33
SPEAKER_08: You want to live up to 20,000 years old, knowing you're gonna die?
• 43:36
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 43:37
  SPEAKER_08: You know, it's it's just it's it's vanity, vanity.
• 43:39
SPEAKER_08: It's just chasing the wind for 20,000 years.
• 43:41
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 43:42
SPEAKER_01: You want what God offers in Christ.
• 43:44
SPEAKER_01: And I was listening to Amos yesterday, who was here, his whole family is part of a band, and he was he's got a song, and it has like eight million views on YouTube, and he says inside the song that I would not drink of the fountain of youth if it was offered to me.
• 43:58
  SPEAKER_01: Right?
• 43:59
SPEAKER_01: Listen, all of our days were written out before there was one of them.
• 44:02
SPEAKER_01: And to Oscar's point, I I want to live until I die.
• 44:07
SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
• 44:08
  SPEAKER_01: Think through that, right?
• 44:09
SPEAKER_01: I want to live until I die.
• 44:10
SPEAKER_01: I want to be able to be all there until that moment when God says, It is time to come home.
• 44:15
SPEAKER_01: I want to cross that finish line, exhausted for sure, but not because I didn't take care of this vessel.
• 44:23
SPEAKER_01: So I have a lot of work to go.
• 44:24
SPEAKER_01: A lot of stuff I need to do.
• 44:25
SPEAKER_01: I need to get in shape, I need to get in the gym.
• 44:27
SPEAKER_01: I need to put working out off of my bucket list now on my to-do list.
• 44:33
  SPEAKER_01: That's what I need to do.
• 44:34
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 44:34
SPEAKER_01: And uh, I am going on a hike this Monday, a four-hour hike with 50 pounds on my back.
• 44:41
SPEAKER_01: And you guys are supposed to go no hunting.
• 44:43
SPEAKER_06: Uh, I'm gonna be killing the bird that represents peace.
• 44:48
SPEAKER_06: Oh, because it's uh dove.
• 44:50
SPEAKER_05: I miss style hunting, man.
• 44:52
  SPEAKER_05: I gotta get back.
• 44:53
SPEAKER_05: But yeah, you know, Mark, uh, here's the thing.
• 44:55
SPEAKER_05: You also missed Dove when you went.
• 44:59
SPEAKER_05: But Mark, I like how you're talking about it because I'm hearing in what you're saying, not just like I I need to, I'm also hearing like I want.
• 45:10
SPEAKER_05: I want to, and because it's good to find pleasure in in certain things.
• 45:14
SPEAKER_05: Like I enj I enjoy my life when I'm working out.
• 45:19
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't feel like I have to, I don't feel guilty about it.
• 45:22
  SPEAKER_05: I don't feel like I just enjoy it.
• 45:24
SPEAKER_05: I feel good, it's make it makes me productive, it makes me alert, it helps me when I preach.
• 45:29
SPEAKER_05: And and so I think people need to connect with that.
• 45:31
SPEAKER_05: There's a practical element and aspect to it, you know.
• 45:34
SPEAKER_05: But but that takes different forms.
• 45:36
  SPEAKER_05: Like Ray, good compromise.
• 45:38
  SPEAKER_05: Go ahead.
• 45:39
  SPEAKER_05: Electric bike.
• 45:40
  SPEAKER_05: Ah yeah.
• 45:41
SPEAKER_05: Well, I was gonna say it looks different ways for different people.
• 45:43
SPEAKER_05: Like Ray, Ray doesn't go to the to a gym, but he he's he stays active and and look, here's the thing again, our imbalance as people is where does the Bible tell me I have to do that or not have to do that?
• 45:59
SPEAKER_05: Versus, is there any wisdom in this?
• 46:02
SPEAKER_05: Is there any practical benefit in this?
• 46:05
SPEAKER_05: No, you don't have to go to the gym.
• 46:07
SPEAKER_05: No, you don't have to run, jog, and walk miles and do all these things.
• 46:11
SPEAKER_05: You get to, and if you want to, do it, you know.
• 46:14
  SPEAKER_05: Go ahead, right?
• 46:15
SPEAKER_05: You gotta say something else.
• 46:16
  SPEAKER_08: No, I wasn't gonna say anything.
• 46:17
  SPEAKER_05: I wasn't even listening.
• 46:19
SPEAKER_06: That's you're bringing up a really good point, which is as much as you know, you we talked about one extreme, which is almost a six trillion dollar industry that is ultimately exhausting people promising heavy but offering death.
• 46:31
SPEAKER_06: But on the other side, too, is that no country um suffers and struggles more with overweightness and obesity than the United States of America.
• 46:41
SPEAKER_06: I mean, um, Disneyland had to deepen the trenches of their water rides because their boats started bottoming out.
• 46:49
  SPEAKER_06: You didn't know this?
• 46:50
  SPEAKER_06: Wait, wait, wait.
• 46:52
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, you're serious?
• 46:54
  SPEAKER_03: Wheezy.
• 46:55
SPEAKER_06: Say that again, Oscar playing.
• 46:57
SPEAKER_06: Disneyland and other uh amusement parts had to deepen the trenches of their water rights because boats started bottoming out.
• 47:06
  SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
• 47:07
SPEAKER_06: Uh when Americans travel overseas, people see us as lazy and obese.
• 47:13
SPEAKER_06: And so we also have to be honest to your point and recognize like, while some of us struggle with turning this youthful culture into idolatry, other of us, to the point earlier, are gluttonous in our ways.
• 47:25
SPEAKER_06: And if you think about it, life, God created us to be active bodies.
• 47:31
SPEAKER_06: For most of human history, if you wanted to eat, you had to go out to your farm.
• 47:36
SPEAKER_06: If you wanted to have meat, you had to go hunt and butcher your own meat.
• 47:40
SPEAKER_06: And nowadays, we don't even have to get up and go to the grocery store.
• 47:44
SPEAKER_06: We can just door-dash it right to our homes.
• 47:46
SPEAKER_06: We don't even have to cook because most of it is just frozen in your throat in the microwave, anyways, you know?
• 47:51
SPEAKER_06: And so the reality, you would walk to work, you would walk to your friend's house.
• 47:56
SPEAKER_06: So much of our life right now is sitting and staring at screens, which are the two things God did not make us for.
• 48:04
SPEAKER_06: And so, yeah, to your point, there's also the call to be to honor the Lord with our activity and to consider our bodies as temples, and how can we, how can we put them to use the way God intended them to be used?
• 48:18
  SPEAKER_06: Amen.
• 48:19
SPEAKER_08: I find it difficult when I see someone who's overweight hugely, I want to encourage them to exercise and eat because I'm concerned about how long they're gonna live.
• 48:29
SPEAKER_08: But when someone starts losing weight, I want to say to them, you're looking great, but do you have difficulty saying that?
• 48:35
SPEAKER_08: You see, someone's lost a bit of weight, you want to say, I always look always, you want to say to that you look, you don't look as fit.
• 48:44
SPEAKER_05: I found more people than not appreciate it when you do point it out.
• 48:48
  SPEAKER_05: Because I'm really hesitant.
• 48:49
SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I don't want them to think that I thought that you know, but like they knew they were overweight to say, hey man, you man, I could see a big difference and it encourages them.
• 48:56
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know.
• 48:57
SPEAKER_06: I know I'm sorry, I wanted to circle back on something.
• 48:59
  SPEAKER_06: Hey, you look great.
• 49:00
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, thank you.
• 49:01
SPEAKER_06: That you alluded to, which is that your motivation for working out doesn't have to even look great.
• 49:07
SPEAKER_06: Um, it it helps reduce anxiety, it gives you energy, clarity of mind.
• 49:13
SPEAKER_06: There are so many areas like we God has created us holistic.
• 49:17
SPEAKER_06: And our physical health affects our mental health, which affects our spiritual health.
• 49:24
SPEAKER_06: All those things, we are embodied creatures, not paganistic.
• 49:28
SPEAKER_06: We are embodied creatures, and all of those things should be done into the Lord.
• 49:32
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 49:32
SPEAKER_05: I mean, look, man, I love to sweat.
• 49:35
SPEAKER_05: I mean, when I sweat, I feel you just feel good like after you eat seven tacos.
• 49:39
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
• 49:40
  SPEAKER_05: Sweating while eating tacos.
• 49:42
  SPEAKER_05: What's that?
• 49:43
SPEAKER_05: Nathan's hot dog eating contest.
• 49:45
  SPEAKER_05: Those guys are sweating.
• 49:46
SPEAKER_05: No, but like it feels good.
• 49:48
SPEAKER_05: You know, you're getting the toxins out.
• 49:49
SPEAKER_05: When I run and exert myself, and I'm and you're breathing, your lungs are filling with air.
• 49:55
  SPEAKER_05: There's that.
• 49:55
  SPEAKER_05: Man, it feels amazing.
• 49:57
SPEAKER_08: So great when you stop.
• 49:59
  SPEAKER_05: That too.
• 50:00
SPEAKER_05: But but look, Mark, I'm gonna throw this out and I want you to comment on this.
• 50:04
SPEAKER_05: Here's what I think bottom line don't be gluttonous, don't be lazy, which leads to people being being sedentary and not moving around, and don't do things that are clearly abusive to your body and love God and live life.
• 50:21
  SPEAKER_01: What a motto, right?
• 50:23
  SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's great.
• 50:24
SPEAKER_01: I don't know what else to add to that.
• 50:25
SPEAKER_01: Uh I like what Ray said about sunlight and vitamin D.
• 50:28
SPEAKER_01: I remember being in uh London and the sun came out, I think it was on a Tuesday last year, and people are out there enjoying the sun, right?
• 50:35
SPEAKER_01: So everything in moderation is is really the idea.
• 50:41
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 50:41
SPEAKER_01: I was talking to Grok, you know, they have a motivation uh feature to it, and I was saying, man, I'm really craving a chili cheese dog.
• 50:48
SPEAKER_01: And he's all chili cheese dog, why are we even talking right now?
• 50:51
SPEAKER_01: Get down and give me 10 push-ups, right?
• 50:53
SPEAKER_01: That's kind of the way it works.
• 50:54
  SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
• 50:55
SPEAKER_01: Uh so I went and had a chili cheese dog.
• 50:57
SPEAKER_01: And I told it, and it said, you know, it's okay, you can do that every once in a while.
• 51:00
SPEAKER_01: But uh moderation is being a good thing.
• 51:04
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 51:05
SPEAKER_05: You've gone to the other chat.
• 51:07
  SPEAKER_05: No, it's a really relationship.
• 51:10
  SPEAKER_05: No, yeah.
• 51:12
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'd like each of you to comment on that.
• 51:14
SPEAKER_05: Um, Oscar, what do you think of that?
• 51:16
SPEAKER_05: Like my my point in what I just said is, and that doesn't mean you can't do those things, but but bare minimum, just have that as a foundation.
• 51:24
SPEAKER_05: Don't be gluttonous, uh, don't be lazy, don't do things that are abusive to your body and love God.
• 51:30
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 51:31
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, that's a great summary of it.
• 51:32
SPEAKER_06: I think the one thing I was I would add is do hard things.
• 51:37
SPEAKER_06: The reason why that matters is doing hard things has proven to increase our confidence, to increase our joy, uh, to reset our minds.
• 51:45
SPEAKER_06: Like the Lord meant for us to do hard things.
• 51:48
SPEAKER_06: We we obsessed over the good life, the comfortable life, but we are made to do hard things.
• 51:54
SPEAKER_06: And so, like you mentioned running as a joy.
• 51:56
SPEAKER_06: Also, if running is hard, it may be good to go and run.
• 52:02
  SPEAKER_06: Do hard things.
• 52:03
SPEAKER_06: That's a that's a good thing to do, not just like shy away and do all the easy, easy things in life.
• 52:09
SPEAKER_06: There's nothing to gain from just making life easy.
• 52:13
SPEAKER_08: It'd be a hard thing for me to eat two double doubles in and out.
• 52:16
SPEAKER_08: I could do it, do hard things.
• 52:17
SPEAKER_08: So it wouldn't be, yeah, well, that's not hard for you, but it'd be hard for me, so I'm gonna do that.
• 52:21
  SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna force myself.
• 52:23
  SPEAKER_07: Uh-oh.
• 52:24
SPEAKER_08: Every day, every day, I almost every day I play Scotty at ping pong, and almost every day I lose.
• 52:28
SPEAKER_08: And I was saying to Sue how I love it, because if I beat Scotty every day, I'd feel terrible because he's good.
• 52:34
SPEAKER_08: But because I'm playing someone better than myself, it makes me push myself.
• 52:37
SPEAKER_08: And I even sweat with that.
• 52:39
SPEAKER_05: So you mean it makes you feel good that Scotty feels bad because he beats you every day?
• 52:42
  SPEAKER_05: Something like that.
• 52:43
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 52:44
  SPEAKER_05: Basically.
• 52:45
SPEAKER_08: Um, Sue showed me Sue showed me.
• 52:46
SPEAKER_08: Sue showed me a video yesterday of the world's fattest lady, just a young girl who was 140 pounds at five years old.
• 52:54
  SPEAKER_07: Oh, wow.
• 52:55
SPEAKER_08: And she became so huge, everything we take for granted that we do, she could not do.
• 53:01
SPEAKER_08: Her legs were just like 18 inches across.
• 53:05
SPEAKER_08: And when she walked, it was just and um she lost a lot of weight.
• 53:09
SPEAKER_08: But I my question was who is feeding that kid?
• 53:14
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 53:14
SPEAKER_08: Who's giving them the whole apple pie and another whole apple pie and six coke canned cokes can cans of coke?
• 53:20
SPEAKER_08: Um, someone's feeding because that's how you get big like that normally.
• 53:24
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but when she went on a uh a strict uh exercise and proper food, she lost it and she became very pretty.
• 53:31
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 53:31
SPEAKER_08: But she had to have the operation where they took her skin off.
• 53:34
  SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
• 53:35
SPEAKER_08: I don't know what they did with it.
• 53:36
  SPEAKER_05: They have jackets.
• 53:41
SPEAKER_05: You know, uh I've seen those shows where where they they get on to the family because a lot of these people they can't they can't go out and buy their own stuff, but someone keeps enabling them, you know, and and so there's that thought.
• 53:55
SPEAKER_05: So uh Ray, I'd like you to comment on on my statement as well, but from the standpoint too of also not being judgmental toward others who aren't gluttonous and who aren't lazy and who don't abuse their bodies and who love God, but they enjoy things in in moderation because that's I think where it becomes that religion where we become judge over others and look at them a certain way and say stuff about them and so forth.
• 54:23
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I've often um said or asked the question is Weight Watchers owned by Hershey's?
• 54:28
SPEAKER_08: Who fatten them up and then make them pay to get rid of it?
• 54:33
SPEAKER_08: And it's like you said, there's a whole industry, and it's it's in the in it's in the interests of the fitness industry for you not to be fit because they want to sell you stuff, yeah, make you think they've got the better.
• 54:44
SPEAKER_08: And I don't know, you you drive past people's houses and out the front is those old sort of torture machines that are not working anymore.
• 54:52
SPEAKER_08: And uh you see, I'll bet that costs hundreds of dollars and it's just tossed out the front.
• 54:56
SPEAKER_08: But I've never been into a gym in my life.
• 54:58
SPEAKER_08: I would like I'd like to go.
• 55:00
SPEAKER_05: Seriously, I'll take you really, yeah.
• 55:02
SPEAKER_05: Wow, drinking coffee, going to gym.
• 55:05
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'd probably see need to go to the hospital.
• 55:07
SPEAKER_05: It's a great place to share the gospel, by the way.
• 55:09
  SPEAKER_08: It is?
• 55:09
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
• 55:10
SPEAKER_08: Oh, you talk about death.
• 55:11
  SPEAKER_08: Good thinking.
• 55:12
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
• 55:12
SPEAKER_05: Drop weights on people's feet.
• 55:15
SPEAKER_05: You scream, share the gospel.
• 55:17
  SPEAKER_05: You reminded me.
• 55:18
SPEAKER_08: A friend of mine uh was in the hot Comoth games, his name was Graham May, uh, biggest leather jacket I ever made for anyone.
• 55:24
SPEAKER_08: He used to preach open air with me, and he was uh a champion.
• 55:26
SPEAKER_08: He won a the gold medal, but he dropped his weights and almost killed the Queen of England.
• 55:30
  SPEAKER_08: What?
• 55:31
  SPEAKER_08: It's it's online.
• 55:32
  SPEAKER_08: No way.
• 55:32
SPEAKER_08: It was just comical because he held the weight up and then he started doing a little bit forward and he started shaking like that.
• 55:38
  SPEAKER_08: Near the Queen?
• 55:39
SPEAKER_08: And just dropped them on the four.
• 55:41
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right.
• 55:41
SPEAKER_08: And she was in the thing in the front row.
• 55:43
  SPEAKER_08: That's crazy.
• 55:43
SPEAKER_06: Uh the joke you reminded me of when you were talking about people buying weight machines and them just sitting there as this comedian like was making a joke about uh TV commercials selling you weight machines.
• 55:53
SPEAKER_06: He goes, uh, fits right under your bed where it'll be forever.
• 55:59
  SPEAKER_07: That's really good.
• 56:01
  SPEAKER_07: It is.
• 56:01
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 56:02
SPEAKER_08: Um, do you remember those uh advertisements I've fallen down and I can't get up?
• 56:07
  SPEAKER_05: I made a song about that.
• 56:08
  SPEAKER_08: They're not funny anymore.
• 56:12
SPEAKER_02: I'm falling and I can't get up, and no, I won't get up and no, I don't get up.
• 56:17
  SPEAKER_02: Come on.
• 56:17
SPEAKER_08: I'm falling in a who is an athlete, Ray.
• 56:22
  SPEAKER_08: Oh, Graham May.
• 56:23
SPEAKER_08: Um Commonwealth Games, gold middle, gold medal champion.
• 56:27
SPEAKER_08: He was a good friend of mine.
• 56:29
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 56:29
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, guys, one more thing to touch on real briefly because we're running out of time.
• 56:33
SPEAKER_05: But but but in the midst of all of that, I think it's important not to forget that there is a proper place for rest that's often overlooked.
• 56:44
SPEAKER_05: We've talked about it before on on different episodes.
• 56:47
SPEAKER_05: Bad rest is a very good thing.
• 56:48
SPEAKER_08: That's the proper place for rest.
• 56:49
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 56:50
SPEAKER_05: But but Oscar, that's that's important too.
• 56:53
SPEAKER_05: Being being believers who understand the principle of the Sabbath, yeah.
• 56:59
SPEAKER_05: Rest and recognizing that that's one way where we as believers in the right way can honor the Lord when it comes to wellness.
• 57:05
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and actually that's a really good, um, really good thing to point out, which is that the health and wellness world will distort the gift of rest.
• 57:16
SPEAKER_06: Here's how they distort the gifts of of rest.
• 57:18
SPEAKER_06: Rest so that you'll be more efficient.
• 57:21
SPEAKER_06: Rest so that you'll be more effective.
• 57:23
SPEAKER_06: The lie in that is that you are a machine and that your ultimate purpose in life is outcome, performance, productivity.
• 57:31
  SPEAKER_06: Output.
• 57:32
SPEAKER_06: But output, that's exactly right.
• 57:34
SPEAKER_06: But we don't, the Lord gave us rest not for efficiency.
• 57:38
SPEAKER_06: The Lord gave us rest for his glory.
• 57:41
  SPEAKER_06: We rest in him.
• 57:43
  SPEAKER_06: Rest, think about it.
• 57:44
SPEAKER_06: Rest, and the proof is in this rest was given to Adam and Eve, therefore us before the fall.
• 57:51
SPEAKER_06: Rest is not a byproduct of the fall to be more efficient, rest is a part of heaven.
• 57:55
SPEAKER_06: It's something that honors and glorifies the Lord.
• 57:58
SPEAKER_06: And so I think the difference between those two things is paramount.
• 58:03
SPEAKER_06: You are not a machine, you are made in the image of God to enjoy him forever.
• 58:09
SPEAKER_06: And rest is a form of enjoying God.
• 58:12
  SPEAKER_05: Amen.
• 58:12
  SPEAKER_05: Well put, Oscar.
• 58:14
SPEAKER_05: And we lost Mark and Ray long ago.
• 58:16
SPEAKER_08: Oh, I showed Mark the video of my friend dropping those weights and just missing the queen.
• 58:21
SPEAKER_05: Is this the time to watch that?
• 58:23
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 58:24
  SPEAKER_05: Like a father time.
• 58:26
  SPEAKER_03: We're doing a podcast, man.
• 58:28
  SPEAKER_05: Just doing it right.
• 58:31
  SPEAKER_05: Watch this.
• 58:31
SPEAKER_05: That looks like a dead.
• 58:33
  SPEAKER_05: Is that him?
• 58:34
  unknown: Whoa! Oh.
• 58:36
  SPEAKER_03: That's not real.
• 58:37
  SPEAKER_03: Is that real?
• 58:38
  SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
• 58:39
  SPEAKER_03: Is that real?
• 58:40
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 58:40
SPEAKER_03: That looks like a bit.
• 58:42
SPEAKER_08: He became iconic in New Zealand for what happened.
• 58:45
  SPEAKER_08: He fell face first.
• 58:46
  SPEAKER_08: Face first.
• 58:47
  SPEAKER_08: He was a Kiwi?
• 58:48
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 58:48
SPEAKER_08: Graham Graham made Commonwealth games.
• 58:51
SPEAKER_08: And uh when you have the sound up, it looks easy to be a good thing.
• 58:53
SPEAKER_08: How did you know him, right?
• 58:54
SPEAKER_08: He uh when I got saved, he came to meet me and he fed me with audio tapes, which really grounded me in the faith.

  SPEAKER_08: Wow.
• 59:00
  SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
• 59:02
SPEAKER_08: And I made him a huge jacket, 53-inch chest.
• 59:05
  SPEAKER_08: He was huge.
• 59:06
SPEAKER_08: Is that the biggest you ever made?
• 59:07
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was the biggest ever made.
• 59:08
SPEAKER_05: Wait, that's not the one with with the big guy in Jacob, is it?
• 59:11
  SPEAKER_05: That's him?
• 59:11
  SPEAKER_05: Yes, that's Grandma.
• 59:13
SPEAKER_05: He almost killed the queen.
• 59:14
SPEAKER_05: Yes, almost killed the queen.
• 59:15
SPEAKER_05: Imagine being famous for that.
• 59:17
  SPEAKER_05: Almost killed the queen.
• 59:17
SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was humiliating for him, but I think it brought him to Christ.
• 59:21
SPEAKER_08: He became serious about his commitment after he became famous, got a gold medal.
• 59:25
SPEAKER_08: He thought, this is just empty.
• 59:27
  SPEAKER_05: Wow.
• 59:27
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 59:28
SPEAKER_05: Well, friends, there you have it.
• 59:29
SPEAKER_05: Look, my encouragement to any of you listening today is ask yourself, yeah, what is your motive?
• 59:33
SPEAKER_05: For those of you that are into hellness, hellness.
• 59:41
SPEAKER_05: It is a new doctrine.
• 59:42
  SPEAKER_04: Oh no.
• 59:43
SPEAKER_05: I feel like I just dropped the weights right there.
• 59:46
SPEAKER_05: It's a health and wellness, not hellness.
• 59:50
SPEAKER_05: Um, and and ask yourself, yeah, what is your motive for?
• 59:54
SPEAKER_05: Oh man, I'm never gonna live this one down.
• 59:57
  SPEAKER_05: How are you?
• 59:58
SPEAKER_05: What is your motive in it?
• 1:00:00
SPEAKER_05: Is it to glorify the Lord?
• 1:00:01
SPEAKER_05: That should be our aim in everything that we do.
• 1:00:04
SPEAKER_05: And if that's your motive, then you're not gonna be judgmental, you're not gonna be obsessive, you're not going to make it a religion.
• 1:00:10
SPEAKER_05: You're gonna be balanced, you're gonna recognize it's not your body, it's the Lord's.
• 1:00:14
SPEAKER_05: You want to serve Him, you wanna be a blessing to others, you want to have vitality so that you can be a good steward of what God has entrusted into your care.
• 1:00:23
SPEAKER_05: And again, take that and think about it.
• 1:00:25
SPEAKER_05: Don't be gluttonous, don't be a person who is lazy, don't abuse your body with things that clearly are abusive, and love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.
• 1:00:38
  SPEAKER_05: Amen.
• 1:00:39
SPEAKER_05: Don't forget, fight like a man, and don't forget the ultimate health foods, nine foods that Jesus ate or recommended by Ray Comfort.
