- 0:00Speaker 1: What you're trying to get into a day, or shown
- 0:03Speaker 1: what you're trying to do.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm trying to get into our world famous podcast, Zach Graft. Notice,
- 0:11Speaker 2: real friends, I miss you too.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I missed you so much it hurts sometimes.
- 0:15Speaker 3: I miss you so much it hurts a lot.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I believe that I was all over the universe, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: I thought so many times.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Over the universe, you were all over the planet, the universes.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Right. I was on Earth and it was awesome. I
- 0:31Speaker 1: wish you were there. Thought of you a lot.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So can I ask you a question?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Ask me anything?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Where'd you go?
- 0:37Speaker 1: I went to Stockholm because Josh Reeden is very dialed
- 0:40Speaker 1: in Stockholm. He loves Stockholm. He's got a lot of
- 0:42Speaker 1: friends there. So I have this new thing in my
- 0:46Speaker 1: brain that I've been ruminating on. I really want to
- 0:49Speaker 1: go to cities where someone I know is dialed in.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I don't want to go with my guidebook and sit
- 0:55Speaker 1: on the tour bus. I want to go where someone
- 0:57Speaker 1: knows the city. And I've been to Stockholm before. I
- 1:01Speaker 1: love it, but Josh just really knows it well, you know,
- 1:02Speaker 1: was all the good restaurants. He's got tons of friends there,
- 1:05Speaker 1: so I went there for a week and then Amanda
- 1:08Speaker 1: Klutes his sister. Everybody should follow her Anna Clutes on Instagram. She's,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you know, we went through all the knick stuff together
- 1:16Speaker 1: and I know her and she's she's a sweetheart of
- 1:18Speaker 1: a human being. She her dream, her whole life dream,
- 1:21Speaker 1: was to move to Paris and like and like literally
- 1:25Speaker 1: be Emily in Paris and start a new life. She
- 1:28Speaker 1: went through a divorce and then she wrote a book
- 1:29Speaker 1: about it and she began this life living in Paris,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and she's sort of an influencer basically like telling you
- 1:36Speaker 1: everything you should ever know and do in Paris. And
- 1:39Speaker 1: she fell in love with this Parisian guy and they're
- 1:41Speaker 1: the cutest couple in the world. Anyway. So Anna invited
- 1:44Speaker 1: Josh and I to come over and she showed us Paris,
- 1:47Speaker 1: like I've never seen Paris.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah, was it like how we got showed Amsterdam.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Even well, I don't remember. I don't remember much of that.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That's funny, but yeah, yeah, yeah something we ran into it,
- 2:11Speaker 1: We ran into friends that knew it, and yeah, it's
- 2:14Speaker 1: just like every every like restaurants are off the beaten pass.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Things you should see, things to avoid things to know,
- 2:19Speaker 1: just like where to walk around. And we met their
- 2:22Speaker 1: friends and it was amazing.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Man.
- 2:25Speaker 1: We just like we ate the best food. We We
- 2:28Speaker 1: drink way too much wine. I'm going on detox now.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I told you. I told you about my light up
- 2:34Speaker 1: board that I use when I wanted to not drink.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I cleared the whole thing out. It's got one little number. Yeah,
- 2:42Speaker 1: it's the number. September eleventh is lit up and that's it.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That's all I got. But I'm starting. I needed to
- 2:48Speaker 1: cleanse my soul. It was fun.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I missed you though, Dude, I missed you too. Case
- 2:54Speaker 2: kept asking when when's Zach coming back. I was like,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I don't know, but I know he's having fun. And uh,
- 3:01Speaker 2: you know, I got some meetings on the books for us.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Really, you're doing some hustling for a Fake Doctor's Real
- 3:07Speaker 1: Friends productions.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I'm trying my best, man, I think you know. I'll
- 3:12Speaker 2: say it on the air and then you can choose
- 3:14Speaker 2: whether to cut it out or not. But you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I'm trying to get us in Stupid Buddy together so
- 3:19Speaker 2: we can make a little animated series about uh these
- 3:23Speaker 2: fake doctors real friends.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I'm down. I would love as an animated series.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Okay, got, we gotta get. This is the thing we
- 3:31Speaker 2: gotta do. Get iHeart on board, Okay, and then we
- 3:34Speaker 2: gotta get and then we gotta get. We'll probably have
- 3:37Speaker 2: to get a couple of outside producers because animation is expensive.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I'm down to talk about it. You know,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I made you those figures. I haven't seen any animation
- 3:46Speaker 1: on your page using said figures.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Well, you need to call up Julian Clark and ask
- 3:50Speaker 2: him what.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I did you think. I didn't DM that mofo. I said,
- 3:54Speaker 1: where are my mouths? Those? For those of you who
- 3:57Speaker 1: don't know I'm talking about, I made these anime puppets
- 4:01Speaker 1: had the custom made for Donald's birthday. And the guy said, wow,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I'm so backward. I'll rush them through because it's Donald.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But the mouths that change that make all the vowels
- 4:09Speaker 1: for the for the puppets. He's imed to send them
- 4:12Speaker 1: later because I can rush everything with those. I go, okay,
- 4:15Speaker 1: now I'm starting to look at the counter. I'm like,
- 4:17Speaker 1: where the fuck are my mouths?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah he's a good dude, though, Man, this dude is
- 4:20Speaker 3: an awesome guy.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I know, but I never thought I DM somebody where
- 4:23Speaker 1: the fuck of my mouse?
- 4:26Speaker 2: His name's Julian Clark. If you have the opportunity, you
- 4:30Speaker 2: can follow his artwork on Instagram. He does actually do Uh.
- 4:34Speaker 2: He's working with Ardman right now. He's worked with me
- 4:37Speaker 2: on a lot of the stuff that I'm trying to.
- 4:39Speaker 1: His works amazing. But bro, it's time for my mouth
- 4:42Speaker 1: to arrive now. But I'm just saying, you haven't. You
- 4:45Speaker 1: don't need you don't need to have these puppets talking.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't unders don't understand why you're not making Zach
- 4:51Speaker 1: and Donald just like butt fucking shit.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Is that what you want us to do?
- 4:56Speaker 1: Well, Sorry, we don't have to butt fuck, but we could.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I can't do that if.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I mean, I think the fans. I think the fans
- 5:06Speaker 1: would be laughing if there was just a little a
- 5:07Speaker 1: couple of thrusts naked or no, just put some clothes up,
- 5:12Speaker 1: Just put us on like one of your Star Wars dummies,
- 5:14Speaker 1: put our heads on them.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Oh I would. I was. That's my plan is to
- 5:17Speaker 2: do that. You and me are going on a fucking
- 5:20Speaker 2: Star Wars. Keep honest.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If I'm a listener right now, I'm like, why has
- 5:26Speaker 1: the Zach puppett, not eagled the Donald puppet. What the
- 5:29Speaker 1: fuck is going on in that garage?
- 5:31Speaker 2: You know, I didn't even think about eagling.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, eagling.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And we'll put the metals in later when we get them.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Aren't you convincing me to start playing heads?
- 5:42Speaker 1: I'm trying to get you going.
- 5:45Speaker 2: If somebody, just somebody just stepped in the middle of
- 5:48Speaker 2: this conversation, he'd be like, who forever, who tank forever?
- 5:51Speaker 1: Trying to get you riled up?
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'm riled up. I am.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I'm officially riled Joelle.
- 5:56Speaker 1: How are you? Producer, priestess?
- 5:59Speaker 5: Thank you?
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'm so good.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Almost my birthdays. I've been planning a very special events
- 6:05Speaker 5: your birthday, almost my birthday, almost my birthday, And so
- 6:10Speaker 5: you know, when you're older, you have to plan your
- 6:12Speaker 5: own celebration, and if your friends are busy, you have
- 6:14Speaker 5: to plan like a month in advance. And so I
- 6:16Speaker 5: like booked a restaurant with like up and coming chef
- 6:19Speaker 5: and like a whole room out. I'm by ten of
- 6:21Speaker 5: my girlfriends. I've got like seat place things, and I'm
- 6:25Speaker 5: getting them all flowers. The theme is good as hell
- 6:30Speaker 5: because I'm taking a lot of pictures everybody has to
- 6:33Speaker 5: come looking amazing, and then I just yes, and then
- 6:36Speaker 5: I just want to celebrate. You know, all the ladies
- 6:38Speaker 5: in my life have been doing amazing things and accelerating
- 6:40Speaker 5: their growth and starting businesses. So I'm giving everyone their flowers.
- 6:44Speaker 5: It's going to be cute.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Okay, guys, you're going to celebrate your friends on your birthday,
- 6:48Speaker 2: on your day, celebrate your friends, yery thing.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Are you a generous person, Joel?
- 6:56Speaker 5: I try to be.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You seem like a really good friend, always blowing up
- 7:00Speaker 1: your friends. Donald, I'm a good friend to you. I'm
- 7:04Speaker 1: always you are you.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Are probably one of you are my best friend, but
- 7:08Speaker 2: you are a great friend to me. Yeah, I think
- 7:10Speaker 2: I am sometimes even when I don't deserve to be.
- 7:13Speaker 2: To have a friend like you.
- 7:14Speaker 1: That's true.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Things good thing.
- 7:16Speaker 1: We have Casey as our living moderator to to to
- 7:20Speaker 1: everybody couple's therapists.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Everybody needs a moderator.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I wonder about other listeners out there whose whose wife
- 7:29Speaker 1: is a couple therapists. Between two men.
- 7:33Speaker 2: There's got to be I would say, I would I
- 7:37Speaker 2: would say, I would say, uh names, but I don't
- 7:41Speaker 2: want to go down that path.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I gotta tell I texted her last night, might b
- 7:45Speaker 1: FF because I got man do I got a show
- 7:47Speaker 1: for her? And y'all listen, Chimp Crazy. You need to
- 7:51Speaker 1: watch this show called chim Crazy. This is the craziest
- 7:55Speaker 1: ship I've ever seen in my life.
- 7:57Speaker 2: This house.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You have to watch it. Donald, Chip Crazy?
- 8:01Speaker 3: You do this to my house? Is it Chip like Chimpanzee?
- 8:05Speaker 1: It's Tiger. It's the guy who made Tiger King, who
- 8:08Speaker 1: somehow found a crazier story than Tiger. This guy, I
- 8:14Speaker 1: don't know how a documentarian who's who, who was able
- 8:18Speaker 1: to make the masterpiece that is Tiger was able to
- 8:22Speaker 1: for the second time another crazy animal. Indade you're animal
- 8:26Speaker 1: person and make a crazier documentary?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Does murder?
- 8:32Speaker 1: I cannot. I'm not done yet. Do Also no spoilers,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but listen, everybody. If you like crazy docs that make
- 8:40Speaker 1: you wish there were thirty episodes when there's only five,
- 8:44Speaker 1: you need to watch Chim Crazy.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Ask your question.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I came home all jet lag last night. I was like,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I gotta stay up. I'm like, I'm like I gotta
- 8:50Speaker 1: stay up and give myself a pep talk. Well I
- 8:52Speaker 1: didn't need much help once Chip Crazy came home.
- 9:01Speaker 3: It's addicted. All right, let me ask you a question. Yeah,
- 9:05Speaker 3: Tiger Kings.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I feel like it was a perfect storm situation right
- 9:09Speaker 2: dealing with COVID.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it was well made. It was well made too.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Absolutely, But I don't know how many of us would
- 9:15Speaker 2: have gone looking for a Tiger king at during that time. So, uh,
- 9:22Speaker 2: do you think that Tiger King would have do you think?
- 9:25Speaker 2: I mean you found chip crazy?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah, because this is why. Let me tell you something.
- 9:29Speaker 1: The guy is a really good documentarian. In fact, he
- 9:32Speaker 1: did such a good job on Tiger King. He does
- 9:34Speaker 1: this clever thing where he's like, I can't be I'm
- 9:37Speaker 1: not going to be able to go down and be
- 9:38Speaker 1: an exotic animal documentarian person because everyone's gonna be like,
- 9:42Speaker 1: oh my god, it's a tiger King. So he hires
- 9:44Speaker 1: a guy to be a proxy director. So he never
- 9:46Speaker 1: goes to the set. He's like working from like home
- 9:48Speaker 1: base at his house. So and then the geniusly high,
- 9:53Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is what I'm not spoiling anything,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but he the guy he hires to be the quote
- 9:58Speaker 1: unquote proxy director is a guy that's been totally embedded
- 10:02Speaker 1: and and always and was in trouble for being in
- 10:05Speaker 1: the exotic animal community. So the people let him in
- 10:08Speaker 1: because they're like, Oh, this dude's into exotic animals. He's cool.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He's doing a documentary on like the hobby.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, all of the crazy they're giving you,
- 10:23Speaker 2: all of the crazy stuff.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I mean, it's heartbreaking some of it. It reminds me of
- 10:27Speaker 1: It reminds me of black blackfish is that it reminds
- 10:31Speaker 1: a lot of blackfish vibes with it, Like how these
- 10:34Speaker 1: animals are treated. And you know, people get these chimps
- 10:37Speaker 1: because they're adorable, and then you know, they then they
- 10:41Speaker 1: grow to be very large animals that need to like
- 10:44Speaker 1: ideally be free and and and then they've been domesticated,
- 10:48Speaker 1: so they don't know how to be They can't be wild.
- 10:50Speaker 1: They they have to be brought to proper animal sanctuaries
- 10:55Speaker 1: that can deal that can deal with these types of animals.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Some people are so obsessed with these chimps that they
- 11:03Speaker 1: keep them in cages in their houses when they're like,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you know, two hundred pound dangerous chimps.
- 11:10Speaker 3: The same thing happened to Caesar.
- 11:13Speaker 1: What do you mean from the Planet of the Apes and.
- 11:15Speaker 2: The Planet of the Apes, that's what happened to Caesar.
- 11:18Speaker 2: That's the downfall of men.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Oh okay, I didn't keep up with those.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Have you watched the Golden Child yet?
- 11:26Speaker 5: No?
- 11:27Speaker 1: Why are you so down at me watching Golden Child?
- 11:29Speaker 1: You'll never see me like anger?
- 11:30Speaker 2: Can you be a fucking Eddie Murphy fan and not
- 11:34Speaker 2: seeing the Golden Child?
- 11:35Speaker 1: I know you got so mad last night. You called
- 11:37Speaker 1: me the end curse.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I didn't call you the inn curse, but you need
- 11:40Speaker 3: to watch me.
- 11:40Speaker 1: You texted me that I was an end curse.
- 11:43Speaker 3: No, I said, Nigga watched the Golden Child.
- 11:45Speaker 1: But I said, I've been smoking to Donald in so
- 11:51Speaker 1: long I've been in Europe. I come home. He fucking
- 11:54Speaker 1: never text me like his wife at least be like, hey,
- 11:56Speaker 1: how's Europe? Not Donald? And then that's what he texted
- 11:59Speaker 1: me as today out of the blue, so we can
- 12:03Speaker 1: talk about it. I've never seen the gold Child. I've
- 12:06Speaker 1: never seen the Golden Child? Joel, do you love the
- 12:07Speaker 1: Golden Child?
- 12:08Speaker 5: I also have not ever seen the Golden Child? What
- 12:10Speaker 5: is going on? I'll correct my mistake. I'm so sorry, Oh.
- 12:16Speaker 2: My gosh, what is going on here? This is an
- 12:19Speaker 2: Eddie Murphy gem for those of you who have never look.
- 12:25Speaker 2: This is when I was a kid. This was the
- 12:29Speaker 2: movie that you know. Eddie Murphy is an action hero
- 12:33Speaker 2: in Beverly Hills Cop. He's an action hero and the
- 12:37Speaker 2: Golden Child as well. There aren't that many. I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 2: I take that back. There was Beverly Hill Cop two three.
- 12:44Speaker 2: There's a bunch of movies that he made.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Did you make it through the New Beverly Hills Cop.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Be honest, I haven't seen it yet. I'm not gonna lie.
- 12:51Speaker 2: As I've gotten older, Eddie Murphy isn't as important to me.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Listen. I known't ever size anyone's work. I try not to.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I will say one tiny thing that I began the
- 13:07Speaker 1: New Beverly Hills Cup movie and I have yet to
- 13:10Speaker 1: complete the Hills Cup movie.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Is it good?
- 13:16Speaker 6: Now?
- 13:19Speaker 3: Has just said.
- 13:28Speaker 2: There are certain movies that I have that that that
- 13:31Speaker 2: that have that effect on me. But it's not because
- 13:34Speaker 2: the movie is not good. It's just that I'm putting
- 13:36Speaker 2: it on at a late hour. So I was thinking
- 13:39Speaker 2: that that.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Wasn't the case.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Got it.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Nothing entertained me more in my life and then recent history,
- 13:45Speaker 1: more than Chimp Crazy. Everybody. You gotta watch that ship.
- 13:48Speaker 1: When are we getting together.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I would like to get together. I would like that
- 13:52Speaker 2: a lot.
- 13:52Speaker 1: You can't go to the charity tennis tournament. I understand,
- 13:55Speaker 1: but your wife's going to be my date.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yes, she's going with you, and.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And Bill's going. Bill's gonna play. We're playing in this
- 14:02Speaker 1: uh charity. Well I can't play. I suck right now.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm so out of it, but I'm gonna go support
- 14:10Speaker 1: and get I gave money the charity. And Bill's like
- 14:12Speaker 1: my ringer, like, because Bill Lawrence is so good at tennis.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know, he played in college and he's very good.
- 14:18Speaker 1: He mostly plays pickup ball these days, but I think
- 14:21Speaker 1: Bill could maybe win the tournament. So I'm bringing Bill
- 14:24Speaker 1: is like my you know, I'm kind of like, what's
- 14:27Speaker 1: what's What's what's Tiger's dad's name, mister Woods. Yeah, well,
- 14:34Speaker 1: I'm kind of like I'm kind of like Tiger's dad
- 14:39Speaker 1: and Bill's my Tiger.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Got it? So you're gonna bring Tiger. You're gonna be
- 14:43Speaker 2: really hard on Bill?
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah, on him if he doesn't win this tournament, shape
- 14:50Speaker 1: let's go.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I'm down for I'd love to see.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Did you watch any of the u U S Open?
- 14:57Speaker 2: No, I haven't been able to. I haven't been a
- 15:00Speaker 2: to do much. My wife went out of town on
- 15:01Speaker 2: a little girl's trip.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Not a little girl's trip on drinking wine, and she too.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Was drinking wine. Yeah, And and I was with the kids.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And so my past week was me being mister mom
- 15:18Speaker 2: or mister dad.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Were you a good mister mom?
- 15:20Speaker 3: I sucked, dude, I'm not really that good.
- 15:22Speaker 1: How many times did you yell at them?
- 15:24Speaker 2: I didn't have to. They were well behaved and stuff
- 15:26Speaker 2: like that. It's just that we ate out every night,
- 15:29Speaker 2: you know, like ship like that. Like I spent a
- 15:33Speaker 2: lot of money on toys. You know what I mean too.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Your kids got kind of spoiled by eating out. They
- 15:39Speaker 1: eat out all the time.
- 15:40Speaker 3: They're like sushi, Yeah, I want sushi.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yes, that's my kids.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Those are me too, a child.
- 15:49Speaker 2: I like that.
- 15:50Speaker 1: To invite me to a day or soon. What it's been.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I missed the heat wave. It's been like one hundred
- 15:55Speaker 1: and forty degrees here.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Lucky.
- 15:58Speaker 3: It's all so lucky, dude.
- 15:59Speaker 2: It was horrible, terrible, And I got people working in
- 16:03Speaker 2: my uh in my in my uh on my house
- 16:07Speaker 2: right now. We're repaving our driveway because we had trees
- 16:10Speaker 2: that demolished the concrete, so we had to kind of
- 16:13Speaker 2: repave it so our cars don't hit bumps and get
- 16:16Speaker 2: scratched underneath and stuff like that. And they were working
- 16:20Speaker 2: in the heat, and I was just like, holy you
- 16:24Speaker 2: guys are freaking superstars. Man, Like I know, I you know,
- 16:29Speaker 2: I stepped outside and I was like, God, damn, it's
- 16:31Speaker 2: so hot.
- 16:33Speaker 1: You didn't You didn't offer to help.
- 16:35Speaker 2: No, I did not. I should have, but I don't
- 16:38Speaker 2: have that in me.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Like you know, people are, people are built different.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 16:41Speaker 1: You know, I don't have I didn't want your help
- 16:44Speaker 1: playing asphalt. You're just gonna get in the way. You
- 16:46Speaker 1: could offer them some water, I'm sure you did, yes,
- 16:49Speaker 1: but they don't want to sparkling. They don't want Oh
- 16:52Speaker 1: you even went sparkling o generously. I'm presenting at the
- 16:57Speaker 1: Emmys on Sunday.
- 16:59Speaker 2: You cannaday, motherfucker. This is what I'm talking about.
- 17:03Speaker 1: What are you mad about?
- 17:05Speaker 2: I'm not mad about anything. I'm very happy for you.
- 17:07Speaker 2: But this is what I'm talking about, my dude, Like,
- 17:10Speaker 2: this is how it's supposed to be. We say, Scrubs
- 17:14Speaker 2: is coming back, and yes, it's time to start setting
- 17:17Speaker 2: these seeds and planting these freaking and start planting these
- 17:21Speaker 2: these these freaking little little tidbits here and there. I
- 17:26Speaker 2: know you're doing you, and you could always do you
- 17:28Speaker 2: and all of that stuff, but it's you know, now
- 17:30Speaker 2: it's time for the star of that show to start
- 17:34Speaker 2: starring out so that it does come back. Okay, now
- 17:38Speaker 2: what I'm talking about.
- 17:39Speaker 1: They send me the copy for the joke they wanted
- 17:42Speaker 1: me to say, and I was like, I'm not saying
- 17:43Speaker 1: that super joke. So I've been I've been rewriting it.
- 17:49Speaker 3: And I just wait a second, just don't diss the
- 17:52Speaker 3: head right out of the wo the head writer.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I'm not dissing anybody. I'm sure whoever wrote it as
- 17:56Speaker 1: a genius person. It's just not it's not a funny joke.
- 18:00Speaker 3: So and now everybody who's listening to this.
- 18:03Speaker 1: No, this this will air long after the end. But
- 18:07Speaker 1: my joke, hopefully my joke's better. But I've been working on.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I've been working on. I sent it to some comedy
- 18:12Speaker 1: writers I know to tell me if they thought it
- 18:14Speaker 1: was funny. You yeah, yeah, I did. Mike bro Bigley
- 18:19Speaker 1: his podcast, So check that out, if you if you
- 18:22Speaker 1: if you watch that listen to that. It's called working
- 18:24Speaker 1: it Out, and I thought it was really good. I
- 18:26Speaker 1: really like Mike a lot. I think he's a wonderful writer.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Which well, we got to book him on our show
- 18:30Speaker 1: because now he owes us a tit for attack and
- 18:36Speaker 1: and that's that. Now we have a really cool guest
- 18:38Speaker 1: today Isabelle Furman. Incredible Actressho's had a very long career
- 18:43Speaker 1: and really interesting story that I want to get into now.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Only she's an actress. She's a doula. I don't know
- 18:49Speaker 1: if she's a practicing doula.
- 18:51Speaker 2: She could be. Why not a doula and doesn't do it?
- 18:56Speaker 2: I know you get that, you get that degree to
- 18:58Speaker 2: use the the the experience.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And I wonder if she can use your doula skills
- 19:04Speaker 1: in other ways? Are there any other ways that your
- 19:07Speaker 1: dualist skills can come in handy?
- 19:09Speaker 2: If you've got a bad back, I'm sure she knows
- 19:11Speaker 2: the proper you're constipated. Let's get it.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Someone your friend is constipated. You could help help them crown.
- 19:19Speaker 5: Oh my god, that's so upset.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Stories I'm not sure we made about a bunch of
- 19:34Speaker 2: docs and nurses, he said.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Here's the stories net so YadA here, yeada here, but
- 19:51Speaker 1: there she is thunderous applause. Hi, Isabelle, Welcome to our
- 19:58Speaker 1: amazing program.
- 20:00Speaker 7: Well, thank you guys for having me. I actually am
- 20:02Speaker 7: a huge fan of both of you guys, and I
- 20:05Speaker 7: loved your podcast.
- 20:06Speaker 2: So thank you.
- 20:07Speaker 1: We're happy to have you have you on, and it's
- 20:10Speaker 1: so cool because we have so many questions for you.
- 20:14Speaker 1: First of all, I'm just gonna go with the one
- 20:15Speaker 1: we were talking about right before you came in the room.
- 20:17Speaker 1: How did you We want to talk about your acting career?
- 20:19Speaker 1: Obviously been working forever. You're so beautiful. Oh my god,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you're even more beautiful on zoom than you are in
- 20:24Speaker 1: the movies. How did you?
- 20:27Speaker 2: Are you a Star Wars fan?
- 20:29Speaker 1: No, we don't care about that, are you? How did
- 20:31Speaker 1: you Donald Donalds? I get the first fucking question, Isabelle,
- 20:37Speaker 1: since you listened to the show. You know, we get
- 20:39Speaker 1: very competitive with who gets to ask more questions. How
- 20:42Speaker 1: did you become a doula? How did that happen? Someone
- 20:45Speaker 1: told me that you're a doula?
- 20:47Speaker 7: Yeah, no, that was actually really It was more so
- 20:49Speaker 7: that when COVID happened, one of my friends was pregnant
- 20:52Speaker 7: and she wanted to do this like weekend doula course
- 20:55Speaker 7: just to have a better understanding of her pregnancy. And
- 20:59Speaker 7: we watched this dock mentory that Ricky Lake directed called
- 21:02Speaker 7: The Business of Being Born.
- 21:05Speaker 6: And after doing.
- 21:05Speaker 7: That weekend course, I was like, I love this teacher,
- 21:08Speaker 7: and I want to sign up for six months and
- 21:10Speaker 7: there's nothing going on and maybe I'll never work again,
- 21:12Speaker 7: and maybe movies will never exist.
- 21:14Speaker 6: And babies will always be born.
- 21:17Speaker 7: And so I was like, I'm just gonna, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 7: go full granola mom, even though I'm not a mom.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Yet, and just kind of dive right in.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Wait, so, yeah, go ahead, I'll allow you. I'll allow
- 21:29Speaker 1: you one. Go ahead.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Are you practicing?
- 21:32Speaker 1: Do you practice?
- 21:33Speaker 3: No?
- 21:33Speaker 6: No? I mean I I.
- 21:36Speaker 3: You and that bad.
- 21:37Speaker 7: Yeah. I think for me, it's more so that I
- 21:39Speaker 7: would hope that it helped inform me as I get older.
- 21:43Speaker 7: And also, you know, now I'm at the age where
- 21:45Speaker 7: all of my friends are getting pregnant and having kids,
- 21:47Speaker 7: and it's interesting to be a part of those conversations
- 21:50Speaker 7: and have some knowledge of like different herbs that they
- 21:53Speaker 7: can take to help deal with their you know, their
- 21:57Speaker 7: first trimester and queasiness.
- 21:59Speaker 6: Things like that.
- 22:00Speaker 7: I mean, you just kind of learned certain things about
- 22:01Speaker 7: the human body and women in general that just empowered
- 22:05Speaker 7: me so much more as a young woman.
- 22:06Speaker 1: That will you go that route when you do have
- 22:09Speaker 1: a child? Will you go the sort of home birth?
- 22:12Speaker 1: I know, yes, I.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Mean I totally want to. I don't know.
- 22:20Speaker 7: You have to cross those bridges when they come to them,
- 22:22Speaker 7: And it depends on how old I am when I have.
- 22:24Speaker 6: Kids, and you know how healthy I am at that time.
- 22:27Speaker 7: But my hope is that I can be in my
- 22:30Speaker 7: living room and just do the thing.
- 22:33Speaker 6: You know, that'd be great.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes me nervous. The home birth thing, I
- 22:38Speaker 1: got to say. I know, I know the documentary youre
- 22:40Speaker 1: talking about. I know how crazy the whole hospital thing is,
- 22:42Speaker 1: and I totally respect everyone's choices. I'm just saying it's
- 22:45Speaker 1: a neurotic semi. I worry about the whole I worry
- 22:52Speaker 1: about the home thing. But you know, I'm close to
- 22:55Speaker 1: a hospital. Some of these people do it in the
- 22:56Speaker 1: middle of nowhere, and that that freaks me out.
- 22:58Speaker 6: So, you know, I think the cool thing.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Is learning that, Like it's women for you know, for
- 23:04Speaker 7: all of history have been giving birth all over the
- 23:07Speaker 7: place in fields, working, traveling, and we have amazing modern
- 23:13Speaker 7: advancements with hospital and it's incredible to have those options.
- 23:16Speaker 6: But the idea that I didn't.
- 23:18Speaker 7: Even know until I was in my early twenties that
- 23:22Speaker 7: I could have a baby without being in a hospital,
- 23:24Speaker 7: that I didn't have to be scared of it, but
- 23:26Speaker 7: it's something that I should just.
- 23:27Speaker 6: Be informed about and understand.
- 23:30Speaker 7: Was like earth Shatrin Tony and made me go like, gosh,
- 23:33Speaker 7: I'm so cool. I'm like a portal of life from
- 23:36Speaker 7: another universe. It's a crazy way to look at like
- 23:40Speaker 7: having a baby is like.
- 23:42Speaker 6: I am literally bringing in a spiritual being from another world.
- 23:46Speaker 6: I am a vessel.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I love that I'm gonna need help. I mean, I
- 23:51Speaker 1: don't even have any current plans to have a child,
- 23:54Speaker 1: but I'm gonna need a tool. I hope that you're
- 23:56Speaker 1: still available.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Well, maybe you'll be practicing you were, you.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Know, I'm a pilot and if you don't, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 1: get certified. Every so often you lose your license. And
- 24:06Speaker 1: do you have to go to doula school to be
- 24:08Speaker 1: to be doula ready or once you're a dula or
- 24:10Speaker 1: a doula.
- 24:11Speaker 7: I think so dula and midwife are different. If you're
- 24:13Speaker 7: a midwife, you have to be like a nurse's r N.
- 24:15Speaker 7: You have to constantly keep up your practice and everything.
- 24:18Speaker 7: I think as a dula, it's like, you know, your
- 24:21Speaker 7: your job is not to offer like medical assistance or advice.
- 24:24Speaker 7: Your job is to really support the mom and whatever
- 24:27Speaker 7: mom's decision of how she wants to have the birth.
- 24:31Speaker 6: And I think the job kind of came to be.
- 24:33Speaker 7: Even though historically dulas and midwives were kind of one
- 24:36Speaker 7: and the same, the job of doula sort of came
- 24:39Speaker 7: to be after birth has become so medicalized that sometimes
- 24:43Speaker 7: women want to be able to have, you know, an
- 24:45Speaker 7: advocate for them there that's not there, you know, very
- 24:49Speaker 7: nervous partner going, oh, I don't really know, but someone
- 24:53Speaker 7: there who at least understands what's going on and is like,
- 24:56Speaker 7: you know, let's keep the energy of the room good.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Let's place some music.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Okay, Coldplay and everybody calm.
- 25:03Speaker 6: Down, Cold Hands and so controller.
- 25:14Speaker 1: That's gonna be my birthing song when I give birth.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm just gonna fix you on a repeat.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Got the eye tig.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Or what about rock the rocky theme?
- 25:35Speaker 4: D He really wants to get onto Star Wars.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well we're not gonna get there yet. We're gonna
- 25:49Speaker 1: go back to the very beginning, which is apparently a
- 25:51Speaker 1: very good place to start your performance in this movie.
- 25:55Speaker 1: At eleven years old, I mean I was a child.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I was trying to be a child actor, but with
- 26:00Speaker 1: very little success. I got a couple of little things.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But you were eleven years old when you got Orphan?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 26:07Speaker 6: I was ten and turned eleven while we filmed.
- 26:09Speaker 1: How the fuck were you such a good actress?
- 26:12Speaker 2: What were you doing before that?
- 26:14Speaker 1: How did this happen?
- 26:16Speaker 6: I honestly don't you know.
- 26:17Speaker 7: It's acting sort of fell into my space and my
- 26:21Speaker 7: lap in like the most crazy, serendipitous way.
- 26:24Speaker 6: And then you know, years later, I'm like it was
- 26:26Speaker 6: so easy back then, like it just kind of happened.
- 26:28Speaker 8: And now I'm like grinding, grinding, grinding. But you know,
- 26:31Speaker 8: I think everything goes through waves.
- 26:32Speaker 7: When I was when I was a kid, though, Orphan
- 26:34Speaker 7: was just an audition that I was sent through my agent,
- 26:36Speaker 7: and I remember reading it because my mom had to.
- 26:39Speaker 6: Read it before me because it was righted r.
- 26:41Speaker 7: She blacked out all the like curse words and like
- 26:44Speaker 7: the sex scene in it.
- 26:46Speaker 6: So I had this like script with like all these
- 26:48Speaker 6: black sharpie.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Marks, and it was like trying to read through information.
- 26:54Speaker 8: And I remember reading that script and being like, oh
- 26:57Speaker 8: my gosh, she just wants someone to love her, and
- 26:59Speaker 8: I my mom, I understand her, and my mom was like,
- 27:02Speaker 8: what do you understand?
- 27:04Speaker 6: Like what exactly? But I think there was just something
- 27:07Speaker 6: about that script. You know, sometimes there are.
- 27:09Speaker 7: Those projects that kind of come into your life and
- 27:11Speaker 7: you're kind of meant to do them. And I hadn't
- 27:14Speaker 7: done anything for I mean, I had done a small
- 27:16Speaker 7: independent film and a commercial silot that didn't but I
- 27:22Speaker 7: was not, like, you know, to lead a Warner Brothers movie.
- 27:26Speaker 7: I don't think they really wanted to hire me originally
- 27:30Speaker 7: because I had nothing really under my mind.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It's scary with an eleven year old kid, because you
- 27:34Speaker 1: just don't know, Like it's one thing that they can
- 27:36Speaker 1: do it in a tiny room in front of three people,
- 27:38Speaker 1: but can they do it on a set? Can they
- 27:40Speaker 1: do it? I mean, this movie has so many stunts
- 27:42Speaker 1: and such scale to it totally, and there you are with,
- 27:47Speaker 1: you know, two two incredible actors, Peter Starsgard and it's
- 27:51Speaker 1: very firmingly right for.
- 27:52Speaker 7: Me yeah, yeah, and it's it's huge to be working
- 27:56Speaker 7: with those people.
- 27:57Speaker 6: I mean, they were like, you know, real actors.
- 27:58Speaker 7: You know, they've not super crazy famous, They've been working forever.
- 28:02Speaker 6: They're so great. I mean, I really was.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Peter is one of the finest.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I was just saying, Peter alone, Peter Saws got alone.
- 28:10Speaker 6: That's and I got to seduce him ten years old.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Right, I forgot about that?
- 28:16Speaker 2: Was No, it was very disturbed. It was a very
- 28:18Speaker 2: disturbing moment at the time that shit came out. I
- 28:22Speaker 2: remember that, Shi. It was very controversial when it came.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, let's take a break, we'll be right back after
- 28:27Speaker 1: these fine words. No, wait, I have so many questions.
- 28:37Speaker 1: So there was also this story that happened with the
- 28:40Speaker 1: There was this documentary about this real case of this
- 28:43Speaker 1: of a family trying to figure out if what what
- 28:47Speaker 1: was your reaction when you saw that come out about
- 28:49Speaker 1: this this girl they didn't know if she was actually
- 28:52Speaker 1: a young girl or if she was an adult because
- 28:55Speaker 1: none of her hospital records. What was the name of
- 28:58Speaker 1: that documentary.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Grace, Yeah, the serious case in Natalia Grace, which I
- 29:03Speaker 6: was seen.
- 29:04Speaker 1: But of course everything it was it was just a.
- 29:07Speaker 6: This was so funny.
- 29:08Speaker 7: So David Leslie Johnson, who wrote the original Orphan, he
- 29:11Speaker 7: and I have been in touch since I did the
- 29:13Speaker 7: first one.
- 29:14Speaker 6: And I, you know, Orphan was like became a cult classic.
- 29:17Speaker 7: It wasn't like huge in the box office, but it
- 29:19Speaker 7: really massively had its own fan base, and like still
- 29:22Speaker 7: to this day. I mean, all these years later, it's
- 29:24Speaker 7: the thing I recognized for the most and people quoted.
- 29:27Speaker 1: For a sate a lit. I said, it's so iconic.
- 29:31Speaker 7: Totally, And so he and I were talking because he
- 29:33Speaker 7: had written he had kind of had a friend Dave
- 29:37Speaker 7: Kogoeshav write a sequel for Orphan, and they couldn't get
- 29:40Speaker 7: it off the ground years ago. And then this you know,
- 29:44Speaker 7: Natalia Gray story came up on Doctor Phil and I
- 29:47Speaker 7: remember calling him. I was like, can we get coffee?
- 29:50Speaker 7: And I said take it out now. I can't tell
- 29:53Speaker 7: you how many people are sending me this article, like
- 29:55Speaker 7: I think we got to take it out now. And
- 29:57Speaker 7: so that's how we ended up making Orphan for a Kill.
- 30:00Speaker 1: But how did you? I'm sorry I hadn't see the sequel,
- 30:04Speaker 1: which I will now will because I'm fascinated, but but
- 30:07Speaker 1: how did you? What was the What was the premise
- 30:10Speaker 1: that enabled you to this many years later, still play
- 30:13Speaker 1: a young woman. How did that work out?
- 30:15Speaker 7: It was such a team effort, and I honestly didn't know.
- 30:18Speaker 7: I was like, is this movie gonna be just so bad?
- 30:21Speaker 7: I'm just gonna look great?
- 30:24Speaker 1: How old were you? How old were you?
- 30:26Speaker 7: I was twenty three. We filmed it in twenty twenty.
- 30:28Speaker 7: We filmed it during during COVID and.
- 30:32Speaker 6: And I mean it was nuts. I had like a
- 30:34Speaker 6: little chair that they made me that helped me like
- 30:37Speaker 6: walk around so i'd be smaller.
- 30:40Speaker 8: Julia Stiles, who plays my mom in the movie, had
- 30:43Speaker 8: these boots that were like these massive platform boots that
- 30:46Speaker 8: you can only you can only buy.
- 30:48Speaker 6: They're like, you know, they're like you know, pull dancing
- 30:50Speaker 6: stripper boots.
- 30:50Speaker 8: They're like really high heel, They're great, really comfortable, but
- 30:56Speaker 8: you can only have them with like fringe or spar
- 31:00Speaker 8: so it's like she.
- 31:01Speaker 6: Was wearing those.
- 31:02Speaker 7: I was squatting half of the time, so I looked shorter.
- 31:05Speaker 7: We did a lot of force perspective, like they lit
- 31:07Speaker 7: everything that.
- 31:09Speaker 1: They tried to make them have an answer.
- 31:13Speaker 6: But that was the thing that I remember when I
- 31:15Speaker 6: saw the movie. For the first time.
- 31:16Speaker 7: I was really nervous because you know, you're seeing dailies
- 31:19Speaker 7: and things are looking okay, but when you edit a
- 31:21Speaker 7: movie together, I was like, at the end of the day,
- 31:22Speaker 7: I mean, I'm in my twenties, Like this is either.
- 31:24Speaker 1: You're supposed to be older. Though I'm sorry, I don't
- 31:26Speaker 1: know the premise.
- 31:26Speaker 6: It's a prequel. I was supposed to be younger. I
- 31:29Speaker 6: was younger, and the.
- 31:33Speaker 8: Movie when I went to watch it, I remember I
- 31:35Speaker 8: was just so deeply uncomfortable because it was like, oh
- 31:37Speaker 8: my god, somehow they did it.
- 31:38Speaker 6: I look like I'm ten years old again. I was
- 31:41Speaker 6: there and it just didn't make it.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I must have done some some some face work to
- 31:45Speaker 1: you to make you look.
- 31:48Speaker 7: They didn't, though we didn't have the money, honestly, I mean,
- 31:50Speaker 7: I think that was the crazy thing that the conversations of,
- 31:53Speaker 7: like they were going to cast a kid and put
- 31:55Speaker 7: my face on it. They made a mask for one
- 31:57Speaker 7: of the girls who was my double, and then ultimately
- 32:00Speaker 7: they just ended up deciding that we just have to
- 32:01Speaker 7: be really clever, kind of like Peter Jackson did the Hobbit,
- 32:04Speaker 7: we have to do everything for his perspective, And I had.
- 32:07Speaker 6: A bigger cup and a bigger fork.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Really, Oh my god, it's like that movie. Remember that
- 32:13Speaker 1: movie we were kids, Donal The Incredible Shrinking Woman. Yes,
- 32:16Speaker 1: it's like that, they like got larger things.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Was The Incredible Shrinking Woman? Was it Lily Tomlin?
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yes, it was Lily Tomlin.
- 32:23Speaker 6: I have to see this movie.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Oh it's a masterpiece. Oh I see it. It must
- 32:28Speaker 1: be like eighty six to well.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Say Something and eighty one eighty one.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Oh, I remember seeing. I was so young, but I
- 32:37Speaker 1: remember that. It's really funny. By the way, you should
- 32:40Speaker 1: see it with your kids if you're looking for a
- 32:42Speaker 1: good eighties movie. It's about a woman who just something.
- 32:45Speaker 1: She has some weird uh allergic reaction and she just
- 32:48Speaker 1: starts shrinking.
- 32:49Speaker 2: And she was back when they made movies like All
- 32:52Speaker 2: of Me and Steve Martin the Man with Two Brains, right.
- 32:56Speaker 1: But it was really funny, and she becomes tiny, like
- 32:58Speaker 1: smaller than a barns. Really, she sits down, she falls
- 33:01Speaker 1: on the train. I mean it was kind of like
- 33:02Speaker 1: I definitely inspired. It must have inspired Honey, I shrunk
- 33:06Speaker 1: the kids because it was like that.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Well, Alice in Wonderland was all of that too, right, Yeah.
- 33:12Speaker 1: But I've never heard that, you had never heard of
- 33:15Speaker 1: I'm kidding. Is there any chance of a third installment? Isabelle?
- 33:18Speaker 1: Can they can you go back even further? What if
- 33:20Speaker 1: you're like a baby?
- 33:21Speaker 6: Apparently it's a conversation.
- 33:25Speaker 7: We were there, they're writing a script. I haven't read
- 33:27Speaker 7: anything yet, so I have no idea. I mean, the
- 33:30Speaker 7: thing is, we did not think that the second Like,
- 33:32Speaker 7: you know, you don't expect a lot.
- 33:34Speaker 6: You hope that the fans will come back.
- 33:36Speaker 7: But the second movie people really loved, and so then
- 33:38Speaker 7: it was like, Okay, I guess we maybe are going
- 33:40Speaker 7: to do a third and it seems like that's like
- 33:42Speaker 7: a real conversation.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Well that thing, first of all, this story about the
- 33:45Speaker 1: real young girl woman that had happened to that just
- 33:49Speaker 1: fascinated I think people. So that was like it was
- 33:52Speaker 1: like a real version of that. And also Meg and Meghan,
- 33:54Speaker 1: which was sort of a campy, campy, uh can't be
- 33:58Speaker 1: horror version of this was a big hit too. I mean, granted,
- 34:02Speaker 1: Megan she's a robot, but it's in the same spirit.
- 34:06Speaker 1: It was like a can't be kid who's gonna kill you?
- 34:09Speaker 2: Right?
- 34:11Speaker 1: I love Meghan, by the way, I'm not usually the
- 34:13Speaker 1: I'm not usually the consumer of this genre, especially can't
- 34:17Speaker 1: be hard. I don't usually watch it, but I thought
- 34:20Speaker 1: Megan was fucking hilarious and amazing.
- 34:23Speaker 7: Yeah, it's you know, I think that sort of iconic
- 34:27Speaker 7: character like a Megan or like an Esther. I think
- 34:30Speaker 7: people love those sorts of things where you can dress
- 34:32Speaker 7: up on Halloween and you can really kind of attach
- 34:34Speaker 7: yourself to a character. And that doesn't always exist anymore.
- 34:36Speaker 7: I think it's not as common as it used.
- 34:38Speaker 2: You are. You are definitely a Halloween character every fricking year.
- 34:43Speaker 2: It must be. It must be exhausting to get all
- 34:47Speaker 2: of the Instagram posts of you. I mean it's flattering,
- 34:51Speaker 2: all all of it, but holy it's like you Wednesday.
- 34:56Speaker 7: Like. I actually have a great story about that, which
- 34:59Speaker 7: was a few years so when fourph and two came out,
- 35:02Speaker 7: I was in Austin, Texas with a friend and I
- 35:04Speaker 7: was like, I'm going to dress up like Esther and
- 35:06Speaker 7: take a picture and post it on my Instagram. I
- 35:09Speaker 7: usually we come up with a group costume. Me her
- 35:11Speaker 7: fiance and I do like a trio costume. Couldn't figure
- 35:16Speaker 7: out what we were going to do, and I was like,
- 35:17Speaker 7: you know what, fuck it, I'm just going to dress
- 35:19Speaker 7: up like Esther for Halloween.
- 35:21Speaker 8: And we went to a concert and the amount of
- 35:24Speaker 8: people came up to me, it was like, your costume
- 35:27Speaker 8: is amazing. Not a single person recognized me, and I
- 35:31Speaker 8: just was I was laughing the whole night, and I
- 35:34Speaker 8: was like, this is the best thing ever, because it's kind.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Of like when Mark Hamill dressed up like a Stormtrooper
- 35:41Speaker 2: and was walking around Comic Con with a Stormtrooper mask
- 35:44Speaker 2: on and was taking pictures with everybody and nobody knew
- 35:48Speaker 2: that they were standing next to Luke Skywalker. Do you
- 35:50Speaker 2: remember that? Joelle? Like you?
- 35:53Speaker 5: And it was amazing. I really like it when folks
- 35:55Speaker 5: go out and call It's like when celebrities go to
- 35:57Speaker 5: Comic Con and they just put on like a regular
- 36:00Speaker 5: dollar store mask.
- 36:01Speaker 3: And walk around.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I did. I did that because we had to shoot
- 36:04Speaker 1: scenes from which I was here at Comic Con, because
- 36:06Speaker 1: there was a scene outside Comic Con, and I, you know,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I'm not Mark Hamill in the world of comic Con,
- 36:14Speaker 1: but I still had to be able to direct this
- 36:16Speaker 1: scene and not have people being like, hey, can un
- 36:19Speaker 1: I take a selfie? So I wore this Batman mask
- 36:22Speaker 1: and directed the whole scene with wearing a Batman mask.
- 36:25Speaker 3: I mean, it's just genius. It's hiding in plain sight,
- 36:28Speaker 3: you know.
- 36:30Speaker 7: I also think just nobody would believe it. They're like,
- 36:33Speaker 7: you know, what, what are they doing here?
- 36:35Speaker 1: I remember when I was first coming up in New
- 36:37Speaker 1: York as an actor, and I didn't I was. I was.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I was peeying on music videos and stuff. And I
- 36:42Speaker 1: had a Halloween party and I had met Christina Ricci
- 36:45Speaker 1: at an audition. She wasn't auditioning, she was accompanying her
- 36:48Speaker 1: friend who was auditioning because she was already super famous.
- 36:51Speaker 1: And you know, we met and we were chatting and
- 36:54Speaker 1: I said, I'm having a Halloween party. You should come.
- 36:56Speaker 1: And she came to the Halloween party. It was much
- 36:58Speaker 1: to my surprise because I had the divy apartment in
- 37:01Speaker 1: the East Village on Avenue A and Seventh Street, and
- 37:03Speaker 1: I didn't know any certainly didn't. She was a big star,
- 37:06Speaker 1: and she walked in and I remember my friends being like,
- 37:10Speaker 1: your costume is amazing? Are you Christina Ricci? Like, is
- 37:14Speaker 1: that your costume.
- 37:19Speaker 6: So good? And I did.
- 37:22Speaker 1: I didn't know any famous people, so I didn't and
- 37:24Speaker 1: I didn't want her to feel comfortable. So I just
- 37:25Speaker 1: started saying, yes, yes, that's her costumes, Christina Ricci. You know,
- 37:30Speaker 1: everyone's wasted. They're like, you kill that you look so
- 37:33Speaker 1: much like her anywhay, you know, because.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Because nobody believed that you could have that type of pull.
- 37:42Speaker 2: That's why. No, that's it right there. That's the only
- 37:45Speaker 2: reason that we didn't.
- 37:46Speaker 3: We didn't always like That's why people always say that.
- 37:48Speaker 1: I didn't live in a world yet coming over to
- 37:52Speaker 1: my Halloween party.
- 37:53Speaker 2: That's why somebody when people meet you or you know who,
- 37:58Speaker 2: you look like, you look like that dude from scrub Yes, yeah,
- 38:04Speaker 2: do you get that, Zach.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I get that, I get you look like the guy
- 38:07Speaker 1: from Scrubs and and uh and yeah that kind of thing.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I get all of it all the time.
- 38:15Speaker 1: And I get it, and I just make a joke
- 38:16Speaker 1: if that happens, I go, I get that all the time.
- 38:18Speaker 2: That's what I say. Yeah, I get that.
- 38:22Speaker 1: He's way more handsome in real life.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I will say that. I say, I say I'm more
- 38:26Speaker 2: handsome than he is, though I think.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Sometimes I get told I look like Jack Shepherd, and
- 38:30Speaker 1: then I just make up a story of like I
- 38:32Speaker 1: am Jack Shepherd. Yeah, and uh, and then I say,
- 38:35Speaker 1: like Christian's driving me crazy.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Right, you know I'm gonna start doing that because I
- 38:42Speaker 2: get mistaken for people like Alphonso Robero and Jalil White.
- 38:46Speaker 2: From here on out, I'm gonna go with it. You're
- 38:48Speaker 2: absolutely right, I am.
- 38:52Speaker 1: And and you should be like in order and then
- 38:55Speaker 1: you should go, and then you should go. I am
- 38:56Speaker 1: Julie White. Did I do that? I worked with Julia
- 39:02Speaker 1: Styles in a in a production of Twelfth Night at
- 39:05Speaker 1: the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, and funnily enough, we
- 39:09Speaker 1: were supposed to be I was supposed to be her
- 39:10Speaker 1: twin because I was playing Sebastian. So if you can
- 39:13Speaker 1: imagine trying to make me and Julia's Styles look like twins,
- 39:17Speaker 1: like twins.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Hold up twins that look so much alike that she's mistaken.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Right for him? Yes, yes, yes, that's and I mean
- 39:28Speaker 1: you really. I mean, granted, in theater you get a
- 39:30Speaker 1: lot of leeway, but that's just too much Leva.
- 39:36Speaker 7: I will say, that's the thing that I find magical
- 39:39Speaker 7: about theater is I think people's skepticism goes out the window,
- 39:43Speaker 7: which is in every movie no matter what you're like,
- 39:45Speaker 7: oh no, no, that's not really that's not really going
- 39:46Speaker 7: to happen, or that's going to happen, or that's the ending.
- 39:48Speaker 6: In theater, you can kind of say anything, so I
- 39:50Speaker 6: can I can buy that. But also it defends was
- 39:53Speaker 6: this Shakespeare in the Park?
- 39:55Speaker 3: Yes, it was.
- 39:56Speaker 7: You know, everyone's kind of far away, you get a
- 40:00Speaker 7: little space.
- 40:01Speaker 6: I feel like, you know, you could buy it well.
- 40:03Speaker 1: And also with Shakespeare in the Park too, there's so
- 40:05Speaker 1: much they do all the you know rightly, so they
- 40:08Speaker 1: do all of this color blind multicultural casting, so so
- 40:13Speaker 1: many times someone's the identical twin and it's like a
- 40:16Speaker 1: black persons. So it's like, you really do you do
- 40:20Speaker 1: get a lot of leeway at the public Then there's only.
- 40:23Speaker 2: One that you can only there's only one Othello is
- 40:25Speaker 2: the only one where the dude has to be black
- 40:28Speaker 2: and the bad guy gotta be white. That's the only one.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Everything else is up to interpretation. But that's the only one.
- 40:35Speaker 1: I remember, Tay Diggs, I did. I was doing both
- 40:37Speaker 1: so a Broadway when playing like, uh, you know, I
- 40:40Speaker 1: was playing a neurotic Jewish play play right in the
- 40:44Speaker 1: in the in the twenties and Tay Diggs came backstage
- 40:47Speaker 1: and he was lovely, so the performance was great, and
- 40:50Speaker 1: he said, how long are you going to do this?
- 40:53Speaker 1: Do you think because I I maybe like to do it,
- 40:55Speaker 1: and I was thinking, like, Diggs, I don't. I don't
- 40:59Speaker 1: think you can play then ronic Jewish playwright. I mean maybe,
- 41:02Speaker 1: I mean maybe you can these days stretch it up,
- 41:06Speaker 1: switch it up, you know, And this is what this
- 41:08Speaker 1: wasn't twenty twenty.
- 41:10Speaker 3: I love the fact that Tay walked backstage.
- 41:12Speaker 2: It was like, let's listen, you did great, you did great.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. By the way, by the way, I
- 41:21Speaker 1: love it. I love it. I love Tay Jiggs, but
- 41:24Speaker 1: I love Tay Diggs. And hey, if you listening to
- 41:27Speaker 1: the podcast, this is I'm not I'm not teasing you
- 41:30Speaker 1: at all, but I was taking a bit back. I
- 41:32Speaker 1: was like, I just crushed this big part on broad
- 41:36Speaker 1: Man and it came backstage and he's like, yo, yo,
- 41:39Speaker 1: give it up, let me let me take the part.
- 41:42Speaker 7: How much that was me I'm gonna do?
- 41:47Speaker 1: When are you done? Because I'm like, dude, dude, I
- 41:50Speaker 1: just started, and now you want to do it. And also, Tay,
- 41:53Speaker 1: I believe in multi cultural casting, but this would be weird.
- 41:57Speaker 2: I think, I don't know, they would change it up.
- 42:00Speaker 2: They would switch it up.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Yeah, well theater right right? Uh? Isabell?
- 42:06Speaker 2: You did?
- 42:07Speaker 1: She did a production Macbeth.
- 42:09Speaker 6: I did. I did in in New York.
- 42:10Speaker 7: It was Macbeth and it was an all female Macbeth
- 42:15Speaker 7: that was about a group of girls to get together
- 42:17Speaker 7: after school to do the play and they bring new
- 42:20Speaker 7: things in their backpacks that kind of up the anti
- 42:23Speaker 7: and up the stakes of it, and it ultimately ends
- 42:27Speaker 7: and the girl who plays Macbeth and Macbeth my ultimate demise.
- 42:32Speaker 2: And it was this kind of a movie. This sound on,
- 42:36Speaker 2: This sounds like a.
- 42:37Speaker 7: Good movie, an incredible production. Erica Schmidt, who wrote a
- 42:43Speaker 7: Sierra Now that Joe Wright directed. She she directed and
- 42:47Speaker 7: wrote that adaptation and actually workshopped at Juilliard and then
- 42:50Speaker 7: did a production of it in Seattle before she brought
- 42:52Speaker 7: it to New York.
- 42:52Speaker 6: And we'd worked.
- 42:53Speaker 7: Together previously, and I, you know, she sent me an
- 42:56Speaker 7: email and I sent her tape of you know, one
- 42:58Speaker 7: of the monologues. But I mean, it's quite big shoes
- 43:01Speaker 7: to fill playing that role.
- 43:03Speaker 1: And which part were you playing?
- 43:05Speaker 6: I played Mac? I played mad?
- 43:07Speaker 1: Wow? Yeah? And how much of the how much of
- 43:09Speaker 1: the how much of the you're saying you're saying you're saying, yeah,
- 43:15Speaker 1: you're saying sort of a play within a play. How
- 43:16Speaker 1: much of the play did y'all do?
- 43:18Speaker 7: There's no dialogue outside of the original Shakespeare part. It's
- 43:21Speaker 7: just I think we probably did about seventy five to
- 43:24Speaker 7: eighty percent of the play, like they made.
- 43:26Speaker 6: We made some cuts so that way it wasn't as long.
- 43:30Speaker 1: But yeah, they just cut Shakespeare. A lot of people
- 43:32Speaker 1: who don't know don't know that, but you're very rarely
- 43:34Speaker 1: seeing the full show because it's there's so long, although
- 43:38Speaker 1: Macbeth is I believe the shortest.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Yeah, we didn't cut very much, to be honest.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:43Speaker 6: Yeah, And it was like the full Hamlet.
- 43:47Speaker 1: You'd be there for five hours. I mean people, everybody,
- 43:49Speaker 1: everybody cut, and I think people usually cut the same stuff.
- 43:52Speaker 1: That's like, you know what, we don't need that, we
- 43:54Speaker 1: don't need that.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Yeah, but Macbeth, they get the greats to be or
- 43:57Speaker 3: not to be that.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Is, yeah, you're not going to cut to be Okay,
- 44:00Speaker 1: that's going to be in there. You're going to get that. Yeah,
- 44:03Speaker 1: it's like you know, you know, we actually had.
- 44:05Speaker 6: A really cool stunt to and play that.
- 44:08Speaker 7: You know, the way that it ends is like obviously
- 44:10Speaker 7: Macbeth gets the boilers.
- 44:14Speaker 6: I mean, but it was it was a show.
- 44:16Speaker 8: So it's like, I don't it'll never I don't know
- 44:18Speaker 8: if it'll come back or you know what. But we
- 44:20Speaker 8: had this puddle on stage that we play in the
- 44:22Speaker 8: whole show. But there was like one part of it
- 44:26Speaker 8: that when all the girls would attack me to like
- 44:28Speaker 8: cut my hat off, I would dip my head underwater
- 44:32Speaker 8: into this like hole and someone would hand me a
- 44:34Speaker 8: snorkel and for seven minutes I would lie on stage
- 44:38Speaker 8: tend to be dead while they walked around with a
- 44:40Speaker 8: like a cut off version.
- 44:42Speaker 1: That doesn't seem safe. It was safe.
- 44:44Speaker 6: And every night it was so stressed.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Every time. Was there a night that you were like.
- 44:52Speaker 1: That, wait was this I just have this?
- 44:58Speaker 6: This was twenty nineteen in.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Trouble believing that anyone allowed you to do this. It
- 45:03Speaker 1: just feels it feels unsafe.
- 45:05Speaker 2: It was. It was.
- 45:06Speaker 6: It was nuts. I remember though. There were every night
- 45:09Speaker 6: we rehearsed this.
- 45:09Speaker 7: So much that we really had like a whole system
- 45:12Speaker 7: and we had like a whole you know, sign language,
- 45:15Speaker 7: hand signal conversation of you know, taps and finger movements
- 45:19Speaker 7: to know, like when everything.
- 45:20Speaker 6: Was situated and good.
- 45:22Speaker 7: But there was one night where it's like the snorkel
- 45:24Speaker 7: filled with water and I remember being like, I'm going
- 45:26Speaker 7: to ruin the show.
- 45:27Speaker 6: I'm going to ruin the whole entire show. You know,
- 45:30Speaker 6: I'm going to ruin the whole show in the last
- 45:32Speaker 6: seven minutes. You're gonna be over.
- 45:33Speaker 8: But I was lucky that they, you know, they one
- 45:35Speaker 8: of the girls noticed something was wrong and surrounded They
- 45:38Speaker 8: surrounded me again and I was able to come up
- 45:40Speaker 8: and you know, but it was an incredible show and
- 45:44Speaker 8: I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in.
- 45:46Speaker 2: At this sounds like a really good indie movie, Like
- 45:51Speaker 2: you know too, you know what I mean, Like that's
- 45:54Speaker 2: a clever you know what I mean?
- 45:56Speaker 1: We have that in common as well. I was in
- 45:58Speaker 1: a production with Best at the Public Theater. My first part,
- 46:00Speaker 1: actually my first part out of I was the two
- 46:03Speaker 1: young characters, Fleance and young Seward. Wow, because I was
- 46:07Speaker 1: I was fresh out of school and and uh George
- 46:12Speaker 1: sea Wolf directed it. It was a big production with
- 46:14Speaker 1: Alec Ballwin, Angela Bassett, Leev Schreiber, Jason Barberharner, Michael C.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Hall.
- 46:20Speaker 1: That's what I'm talking It was six yeah, yeah, I
- 46:24Speaker 1: want to do another place so bad, Isabelle, Your your
- 46:26Speaker 1: story is making me I don't want to snorkel on
- 46:29Speaker 1: the water.
- 46:30Speaker 6: Do another play?
- 46:31Speaker 1: Can we do a play? This is happening in real time.
- 46:35Speaker 1: This is happening in real time. We're putting together a
- 46:37Speaker 1: Broadway show right now.
- 46:38Speaker 2: You guys should do fences, the two they were talking about.
- 46:43Speaker 1: We were talking about the multiculturalism of theater. Isabelle and
- 46:46Speaker 1: I would like to invite you to do Fences with me.
- 46:49Speaker 2: I'm not gonna make it. I'm not going to make it.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Tell you right now, it ain't gonna go that far.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Well, Donald, I don't know. I don't know. It's the
- 46:57Speaker 1: new era.
- 46:57Speaker 2: I'm gonna keep it one hundred to be protests and
- 47:02Speaker 2: all should be. They got protest for bringing this up.
- 47:08Speaker 3: With Donald.
- 47:09Speaker 6: It's not possible.
- 47:10Speaker 7: You can't.
- 47:11Speaker 6: I wouldn't, Fiola Davis.
- 47:14Speaker 8: It's just you don't want to touch anything before she's.
- 47:19Speaker 3: That's yeah, Oh my gosh, come on.
- 47:23Speaker 1: You know you know Denzel is doing a fellow soon
- 47:26Speaker 1: in the early next year.
- 47:27Speaker 6: I think I was going to playing. I'm kidding, right,
- 47:33Speaker 6: he's amazing. Is it a different production? Different?
- 47:36Speaker 1: It's with Jake. I know it's with Jake Jillenhall playing.
- 47:40Speaker 1: He's doing it on Broadway on Broadway, Yes, Jake, Jill
- 47:43Speaker 1: And he didn't do the movie, Joel. Joel is clutching
- 47:47Speaker 1: her pearls. You didn't know this. He did make Beth. Yeah,
- 47:50Speaker 1: he's never done on Sello on Broadway. I don't know
- 47:54Speaker 1: who whatever, but he's played Othello before. I'm sure I
- 47:58Speaker 1: don't know. Joel can google. That's why she has the
- 48:00Speaker 1: Google machine.
- 48:01Speaker 6: College the Google Machine.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Let's take a break.
- 48:04Speaker 1: We'll be right back after these fine words. Wait, we
- 48:14Speaker 1: skipped Hungry Games?
- 48:15Speaker 2: What?
- 48:15Speaker 1: What the hell was that? Like, that's a small movie, huh?
- 48:18Speaker 7: I mean that was like my childhood dreams come true.
- 48:21Speaker 7: I was such a fan of the book and I auditioned.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Did you actually read the book before the movie.
- 48:29Speaker 6: I was such a fan of the book. I had
- 48:30Speaker 6: read the book like fifteen times.
- 48:32Speaker 7: I was like, I was like at the geeking point
- 48:36Speaker 7: where I was seeing the cast and now in Spencer,
- 48:38Speaker 7: I was like, oh my gosh, this is crazy.
- 48:40Speaker 3: And I don't buy that you got something.
- 48:44Speaker 2: When Harry Potter came out. All these motherfuckers were going crazy, like, Yo,
- 48:47Speaker 2: they made Harry Potter. Do you know what I was saying?
- 48:50Speaker 2: What the fuck is Harry Potter?
- 48:54Speaker 1: But you were in eighth grade? When I guess you
- 48:56Speaker 1: were in eighth grade? Is that right?
- 48:58Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 48:58Speaker 7: So I was a huge fan and I auditioned for
- 49:00Speaker 7: Catness actually originally, and then I met with them about Primrose.
- 49:05Speaker 7: But I kind of fell in between both ages and
- 49:08Speaker 7: I was lucky that Debrazanne, the casting director, had me
- 49:10Speaker 7: come in and read for Catness, and I was such.
- 49:15Speaker 6: A fan of the book. I was like, can I
- 49:16Speaker 6: do like a piece from the book?
- 49:18Speaker 7: And she let me, which was very nice, and I
- 49:20Speaker 7: think that monologue gave her the idea to have me
- 49:23Speaker 7: come in for a clothes and you know, that character
- 49:26Speaker 7: was supposed to be like eighteen and I was fourteen,
- 49:29Speaker 7: and I just came in for an audition and they
- 49:32Speaker 7: cast me off of it. So I was like a
- 49:35Speaker 7: part of the whole summer camp of the Hunger Games,
- 49:38Speaker 7: which is really what that first movie was. I think
- 49:40Speaker 7: everyone kind of wasn't sure what the success of it
- 49:42Speaker 7: would be. I mean, we knew it had a huge
- 49:43Speaker 7: fan base, but like you know, we were just.
- 49:45Speaker 6: You know, all young in North Carolina running through the woods.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Were they teaching you guys how to use all of
- 49:51Speaker 2: these weapons and stuff like that.
- 49:53Speaker 7: I learned how to knife throw, which was such a
- 49:55Speaker 7: cool experience. And we had the same stunt team that
- 49:58Speaker 7: did the matrix all of that, and they were super serious.
- 50:01Speaker 6: And I always love.
- 50:02Speaker 7: Being a part of the you know, that whole stunt crew,
- 50:06Speaker 7: Like those people are so the stunt guys are the coolest,
- 50:08Speaker 7: Like there are three kids on sets.
- 50:10Speaker 3: That's where you hang out.
- 50:11Speaker 6: That's where you hang out. And I just remember that
- 50:13Speaker 6: we had we had stunt tributes as well, so we
- 50:16Speaker 6: spent so.
- 50:16Speaker 7: Much time together, all of us, and I just I
- 50:19Speaker 7: wanted to do all of my stunts and wanted to
- 50:21Speaker 7: learn everything that I could.
- 50:22Speaker 6: I was just obsessed with the whole process of making.
- 50:24Speaker 7: That movie and that was and then it was such
- 50:27Speaker 7: a huge hit, and yeah, I'm so happy to be
- 50:30Speaker 7: a part of it.
- 50:31Speaker 6: Honestly, I met such good friends that I still have
- 50:33Speaker 6: to stay.
- 50:34Speaker 1: That's pretty cool to be part of something that was
- 50:36Speaker 1: that huge.
- 50:38Speaker 3: I mean, that's just you don't have anything like that
- 50:41Speaker 3: in your life.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Sack.
- 50:42Speaker 1: I've been a part of a couple of huge things.
- 50:44Speaker 1: I'm just saying. She was in eighth fucking grade, bro,
- 50:46Speaker 1: and she was like, she gets she gets the second
- 50:49Speaker 1: big part of her life.
- 50:51Speaker 6: Yeah, And I couldn't tell anyone. That was the hardest.
- 50:54Speaker 7: I mean, you could tell a fourteen year old girl
- 50:55Speaker 7: not to tell everyone like you just got the coolest
- 50:57Speaker 7: job ever. I was like, my friend actually like if
- 51:01Speaker 7: she locked me in her bathroom at her house, because
- 51:04Speaker 7: you know, all of a sudden, my lunch at school
- 51:07Speaker 7: was totally different because they wanted me to gain muscle
- 51:09Speaker 7: for the movies.
- 51:10Speaker 6: So I went from like, you know, having the normal
- 51:12Speaker 6: school lunch.
- 51:13Speaker 7: Sandwich whatever, to like these prepared meals they had, like
- 51:16Speaker 7: sent me to school.
- 51:17Speaker 2: With how do you not tell your friends? Why are
- 51:20Speaker 2: you doing this?
- 51:22Speaker 7: It was like I just was saying like, oh, I'm
- 51:24Speaker 7: going someplace for the summer, blah blah blah. Took my
- 51:27Speaker 7: exams a week early and then just disappeared. And prior
- 51:30Speaker 7: to that, my best friend was like, why aren't you
- 51:33Speaker 7: like eating the normal food that you eat.
- 51:35Speaker 6: What's going on?
- 51:36Speaker 7: Like she thought it was like something wrong and genuinely
- 51:38Speaker 7: cared about me, and she was like, you're not leave
- 51:40Speaker 7: in this bathroom until you tell me, and I was like,
- 51:41Speaker 7: I'm going to be in the Hunger Games.
- 51:43Speaker 6: She was the person that.
- 51:44Speaker 7: I told and and she was a huge fan of
- 51:47Speaker 7: the book too, So we had a big, like.
- 51:50Speaker 6: Kind of a moment, which was, you know, that's amazing
- 51:54Speaker 6: when I look back on eighth grade, remember the most
- 51:56Speaker 6: I tell.
- 51:57Speaker 1: You about I'm jumping around, But sheiroes I didn't see
- 52:00Speaker 1: this one, but it's I love the premise. I'm in.
- 52:03Speaker 1: Four female friends head off to Thailand for a hedonistic
- 52:07Speaker 1: adventure replete with sex, drugs, booze, and relaxation. When a
- 52:13Speaker 1: drug lord kidnaps one of the ladies, the other three
- 52:15Speaker 1: joined forces to save their pal Donald. I feel like
- 52:18Speaker 1: that movie's our jam Why why haven't we We haven't
- 52:21Speaker 1: We haven't We weren't properly marketed to for this movie.
- 52:25Speaker 2: I don't feel like we were either.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Is it like, really it sounds like that movie with
- 52:29Speaker 1: the with James Franco with all the girls go for
- 52:33Speaker 1: a party weekend and mayhemon suits.
- 52:35Speaker 6: It was like it's a fun movie.
- 52:37Speaker 7: I mean, I honestly, when I've watched the movie, all
- 52:40Speaker 7: I think about is like I actually had such a
- 52:42Speaker 7: great time with the girls, Like we had really bonded
- 52:45Speaker 7: and we were in Thailand. It was, you know, in
- 52:49Speaker 7: twenty one, so it was right as COVID was still
- 52:51Speaker 7: kind of you know, kind of starting dangerous.
- 52:59Speaker 6: Oh yeah, but it was. It was an amazing time.
- 53:02Speaker 7: And uh and and and the movie is like it's
- 53:05Speaker 7: kind of like a nod in a to all these
- 53:07Speaker 7: like action classics that you really like my character does,
- 53:10Speaker 7: like the full Liam Nissan speech from taking really like
- 53:14Speaker 7: the kidnappers on the phone.
- 53:15Speaker 6: It's basically about it, like the.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Is it a spoof or is it like serious?
- 53:21Speaker 6: It's a group of girls who have no idea how
- 53:24Speaker 6: to get their friend back.
- 53:24Speaker 7: They were really just looking to have a good time
- 53:26Speaker 7: and maybe hook up with some guys, and they end
- 53:28Speaker 7: up with like a suitcase full of cocaine and their
- 53:30Speaker 7: friend goes missing and they just kind of.
- 53:32Speaker 8: Have to figure it out because, you know, because why
- 53:35Speaker 8: would you call the cops.
- 53:36Speaker 6: They can figure it out on their own. They're strong,
- 53:38Speaker 6: independent women, they need no man.
- 53:41Speaker 8: And so they just kind of take all of their
- 53:43Speaker 8: movie knowledge sometime with that Chimp doc.
- 53:46Speaker 1: I'm watching this, This sounds great.
- 53:49Speaker 7: I really I really just had never done a comedy
- 53:51Speaker 7: before and it came across my, uh my desk, and
- 53:55Speaker 7: I was like, I'm funny, I can do funny things.
- 53:58Speaker 1: You are funny. I think you're very funny. Must have
- 54:01Speaker 1: been fun to shoot in Thailand and go on all
- 54:03Speaker 1: sorts of adventures in Thailand.
- 54:05Speaker 7: I mean, that was the coolest thing ever. Sometimes you
- 54:08Speaker 7: were really we're really lucky. We get to work in
- 54:10Speaker 7: really amazing locations.
- 54:11Speaker 1: And I wish I did more Donald than I really don't,
- 54:14Speaker 1: Donald have.
- 54:15Speaker 2: You know what. I have a hard time, so I
- 54:19Speaker 2: don't go to these places. Like the last thing I
- 54:21Speaker 2: want is to freaking be in jail in Thailand for
- 54:24Speaker 2: smoking weed. You know.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know how Donald Donald would happen. Donald
- 54:27Speaker 1: would have to Well, I think you're allowed to smoke
- 54:29Speaker 1: weed in talent. I'm not sure. I'm not sure.
- 54:31Speaker 2: I don't know, and I don't want to. I don't
- 54:32Speaker 2: want to say I.
- 54:35Speaker 1: Want to. I want to film in some exotic places. Donald,
- 54:38Speaker 1: where should we go? Thailand?
- 54:40Speaker 7: Uh?
- 54:40Speaker 3: You know, I'm totally down with filming.
- 54:43Speaker 1: When I saw that Vince, yeah, when I saw that
- 54:46Speaker 1: Vincent Vaughn movie Couple's Retreat, I was like, you know,
- 54:48Speaker 1: Vince Vaughan was just like, write me a movie that
- 54:51Speaker 1: takes place and Bora Bora, Right, you come up with
- 54:56Speaker 1: the what's the premise? I don't know. I don't know.
- 54:58Speaker 1: The premise is I'm in Bora Bora for months.
- 55:01Speaker 3: With with with my wife.
- 55:03Speaker 1: With my with my friends.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I honestly I think that's happening more and more,
- 55:08Speaker 7: and I actually I actually think that that's something I've
- 55:10Speaker 7: been thinking about. I'm like, okay, as I'm writing my
- 55:12Speaker 7: own movies, and like, where would.
- 55:14Speaker 6: I want to be filming?
- 55:15Speaker 1: Where do I want to be?
- 55:16Speaker 7: Like, we have to be here because it takes place
- 55:19Speaker 7: on an island, so we really.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Just as well. I just got back from Paris, and
- 55:23Speaker 1: I and I with the whole time, I was thinking,
- 55:25Speaker 1: I'm I'm writing something that takes place in Paris. I
- 55:28Speaker 1: want to be here and I want to make a
- 55:30Speaker 1: movie here.
- 55:30Speaker 6: It's for Olympics.
- 55:33Speaker 1: No, I just went because I have a friend who
- 55:35Speaker 1: dialed in in a local and and uh and she
- 55:37Speaker 1: showed h me and my buddy around and just to
- 55:41Speaker 1: sort of see the city from a from someone who
- 55:44Speaker 1: knows the city's perspective, which I had never had that experience.
- 55:47Speaker 2: And I like this idea. I walked around here and
- 55:51Speaker 2: I like this idea.
- 55:52Speaker 1: I walked around and it's just so romantic, and I
- 55:55Speaker 1: was taking such beautiful everywhere you point your cameras, more
- 55:58Speaker 1: beautiful than than the than the last place took a picture,
- 56:01Speaker 1: and I I thought, I'm working out uh an idea
- 56:05Speaker 1: that takes place there. But so it's sort of what
- 56:06Speaker 1: you're saying.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Your lead should be black. I think it should be
- 56:09Speaker 2: called the American in Paris.
- 56:10Speaker 1: But the thing is, if it's about a very loud,
- 56:15Speaker 1: a very loud podhead who lives in Paris, Hey you're
- 56:22Speaker 1: talking about me, Oh my god, he screams Isabelle. I'm sorry.
- 56:27Speaker 6: No, I don't think I'm such a huge fan.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Donald.
- 56:30Speaker 6: I watched Big Fat Liar as a kid, and yeah,
- 56:32Speaker 6: I know, girls and clueless. I mean, I've grown up
- 56:41Speaker 6: watching your movies.
- 56:43Speaker 1: You make me feel so young, makes me feel so young.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Do you want to make movies yourself, Isabelle.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Yes, she's writing them.
- 56:52Speaker 1: I wanted to delve. I wanted im being a good
- 56:55Speaker 1: interview and I'm delving into that area. Go ahead, Isabelle.
- 56:59Speaker 7: I mean, I think a lot of actors have this
- 57:01Speaker 7: experience when you work on movies, and you know, you
- 57:03Speaker 7: don't have any control in what the final project is.
- 57:06Speaker 7: And there's something kind of magical about that in its
- 57:08Speaker 7: own way that you're like, Okay, I came and I
- 57:10Speaker 7: did my job, and I'm a part of like this
- 57:13Speaker 7: huge orchestra that creates this you know, final product, and
- 57:17Speaker 7: and I hope that I've you know that I've done
- 57:19Speaker 7: the best that I can, and that everybody you know
- 57:22Speaker 7: puts the same passion and love into it that it
- 57:23Speaker 7: turns out.
- 57:24Speaker 6: But you know that doesn't always happen. And I love stories.
- 57:28Speaker 6: I love telling stories.
- 57:30Speaker 7: I'm fascinated by people and psychology and how completely crazy
- 57:38Speaker 7: we all are in our own individual way.
- 57:41Speaker 6: And you know, I just working.
- 57:44Speaker 7: I just worked with Kevin Costner and you know, he
- 57:47Speaker 7: wrote this passion project in the eighties, has been working
- 57:50Speaker 7: on it for so many years, and watching him on set,
- 57:52Speaker 7: I was like, wow, he is in his element, Like
- 57:54Speaker 7: this is what he loves to do, and you can
- 57:55Speaker 7: tell by the way that he trusts in his crew,
- 57:58Speaker 7: the way that he works with his actress.
- 58:00Speaker 6: And I was like, I can do this.
- 58:02Speaker 7: I could totally do this, and and I think I
- 58:04Speaker 7: always felt like I could, but I was like, oh,
- 58:06Speaker 7: later on, later on, later on, But I've just kind
- 58:09Speaker 7: of decided I'm done saying later on, like I'm go
- 58:13Speaker 7: for it.
- 58:14Speaker 1: I think Costner's first film directing himself was was Dancing,
- 58:20Speaker 1: and I remember, I remember, I remember thinking, even as
- 58:22Speaker 1: a young person, you know, I knew that Woody Allen
- 58:24Speaker 1: directed himself and and and others mel Brooks. You know,
- 58:27Speaker 1: That's what I kind of grew up on. But I
- 58:29Speaker 1: mean the scale of chances with the Wolves, the idea
- 58:32Speaker 1: that that guy was not only playing that part but
- 58:36Speaker 1: directing a movie that big, I it blew my mind.
- 58:40Speaker 1: I never I never knew that that was that was possible.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean Redford never did anything
- 58:47Speaker 2: like that, or or Newman Paul Newman.
- 58:51Speaker 1: No, new Newman didn't well, I mean they directed movies.
- 58:55Speaker 1: But I'm saying, like I'm talking about on this, I
- 58:57Speaker 1: don't I can't think of director. You know, there's obviously examples,
- 59:02Speaker 1: like the most obvious being Citizen Kane, but like you know,
- 59:05Speaker 1: in terms of director making something so epic and putting
- 59:09Speaker 1: themselves in the lead, I mean, there's that'd be interesting
- 59:12Speaker 1: to see that.
- 59:13Speaker 2: He definitely, he definitely showed a lot of actors in
- 59:16Speaker 2: Hollywood that they could do that, like, you know, Uh,
- 59:21Speaker 2: Robert Townsend comes to mind. Mel Gibson comes to mind. Yeah,
- 59:26Speaker 2: you know, keenan Ivory Wayne's comes to mind. They've directed
- 59:29Speaker 2: movies where it's you know, not only are they the
- 59:32Speaker 2: well you did it too, bro, you directed a pretty
- 59:34Speaker 2: epic movie that was.
- 59:35Speaker 6: This is true.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Well the Garden State I'm talking about wasn't. Uh. Yeah,
- 59:39Speaker 1: I don't mean to minimize it. I'm just saying I'm
- 59:42Speaker 1: just saying the same.
- 59:43Speaker 2: Exactly what the fucker, dude, don't do this to don't
- 59:47Speaker 2: don't don't, don't do this. Don't do this, bro, Bro,
- 59:52Speaker 2: don't do this. It's a very beautiful movie.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Man, thank you. I'm just saying so. I wasn't my
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: skits at fucking motherfucker.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Don't all of a sudden turn. Don't all of a
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: sudden turn your artwork in.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: There was never a day on Garden Stay where I
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: was like, release the six thousand horses.
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: By the way, I'll just say, the horses are way
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: better trained than the actors at the time.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Always did you have to learn to ride horses for
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: this this? Uh?
- 1:00:32Speaker 6: I mean I knew how to ride.
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: My dad taught me when I was really young, and
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: but I didn't know how to ride like you're in
- 1:00:38Speaker 7: a Western movie.
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: I mean that's totally different.
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: I mean that was like I remember Scottie, Who's our
- 1:00:44Speaker 7: like head wrangler, was like, if you think about it,
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: this was everybody's car. The same casual nature that you
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: walk into your car to sit on the four of five.
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: You got to feel that way when you get.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: On the road. You got to feel that comfortable. Yeah.
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a time.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: I mean, I honestly, it was also finding the right horse.
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: It's just like figuring out like your scene partner basically,
- 1:01:10Speaker 7: and you know, there were horses that I liked working with,
- 1:01:13Speaker 7: and there were horses that I didn't particularly like working with.
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: You know, you trust some of your fellow you know,
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: horse actors more actors.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: It's like it's it's like any scene partner. Well, you're Isabelle.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: Your incredible, your career. I mean it's very rare that
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: someone can start so young and be so good at
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: a young age and continue to have a flourishing career.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: So many kids get that shot and then it it
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: you know, it fucks them up or it makes them
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: you know, not hirable for one other for one reason
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: or the other. But it's just so impressive that you
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: were crushing it at eleven and are and are still
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: going strong now.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Not only that, also that you were like, you know
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: what if it doesn't go the way I wanted to go.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: I'm a doula, Aula.
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: I think that you know, my mom and my dad,
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: and my sister and my grandma. I have a really
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: great family and they always were telling me that having
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: balance is really important. And you know, I was really
- 1:02:15Speaker 7: bummed at the time when Orphan came out. It wasn't
- 1:02:18Speaker 7: like a huge box office hit. But I am like,
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: so damn happy that I've had Like I was, I.
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: Was such a weirdo in middle school and in high school.
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: I got to like have normal life experiences and go
- 1:02:30Speaker 7: to college and you know, and now I'm kind.
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: Of like, Okay.
- 1:02:34Speaker 7: You know, John c Riley did this interview when a
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: long time ago where you said I never want to
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: be too hot.
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: I want to be always warm, and I always really
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: liked that.
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: You know, it's it's nice to be always warm. It
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: means that at a moment's notice, you can you can
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: go up to a Simmeraro.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I don't know that I'm always warm. I think sometimes cold. Yeah, dude,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: in this town, sometimes I feel like I'm fucking everything's
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: going right, and then like the third minutes later, I'm like.
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: With then seconds it's actually you're up.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: For a big part you really want and the rector
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: likes you, and it's going to be amazing. I mean,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: you know, the audience is tired of hearing this example.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: But I got this movie and I made it. It
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: was with me and de Niro and Tommy Lee Jones,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: and I was like, holy shit, I never did something
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like this then, like they got in a lawsuit, never
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: came out in the United States. Like I just like,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I just feel like in this town, there's so many
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: ups and downs. I like what you're saying, though I
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: believe it, Like you know, we're put it this way.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: The obvious is we're all so blessed and lucky to
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: be able to make a living doing this crazy business.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: But but yeah, it is. It is quite a roller
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: coaster ride, and.
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: It isn't we And we're all very emotional creatures, those actors.
- 1:03:45Speaker 7: I think that's the big thing is, like, you know,
- 1:03:47Speaker 7: I have a lot of friends who don't work in
- 1:03:49Speaker 7: this industry at all, And I will say they're rationale
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: and level headedness about you.
- 1:03:55Speaker 8: Know, when I'm like, I don't know, I don't know
- 1:03:58Speaker 8: why it's not click, and they're like, well, you know,
- 1:04:02Speaker 8: did you do the best job you could?
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: I'm like, yeah, Like why are you so upset about it?
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: Then I'm like, I guess it makes sense. I think
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: it's just that we're constantly applying for jobs. You know
- 1:04:11Speaker 7: that you're just constantly being told no.
- 1:04:13Speaker 6: And at a certain point you're like, is it my hair,
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: is it my height?
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: Is it something? Is it something with me? It's like
- 1:04:20Speaker 8: if we were all dating.
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: I mean, I honestly think that my.
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: Mom loves to cook, and she's at my house right now, and.
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: Every time, no, no, no.
- 1:04:33Speaker 8: I live in an apartment building where every time I
- 1:04:36Speaker 8: use the stove, the alarm goes off every single.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Time, like an emergency broadcast.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: This morning, you thought that was like a nuclear attack.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: That's where you went. Not even once we went to
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: someone smoking, alarm went off and Donald was like, this
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: is the big one war games. He turned his key,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: He turned his key, turn your key, turn your key, sir, Hey,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: all right, Isabelle, you better go eat whatever. Your mom
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: just burnt. It's such a pleasure. Thank you for coming on, you.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: Guys, what a great guest.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: She was lovely.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, what an awesome guest. Yes, I like
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: and the behind the scenes stuff was even crazier when
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: we were in commercial break and stuff. You guys missed
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: a lot.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I feel. I just feel so impressed when people can
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: keep it going. You know, she started at eleven and
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: now she's still going strong, and it's just hard. It's hard.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: A lot of people who get accepted as a kid actor,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: then people don't give him an the chance when they
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: get older. I mean you, I mean, you're obviously an
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: example that you were working as a child, But I mean,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: like she she got she got a huge lead as
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: a child, and now she's still going strong. So I'm
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: happy for her.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: She seems cool and I'm glad she doesn't resent the
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: industry like a lot of child actors do when they
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: get as they get older, you know what I mean,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: for putting them through and shit, we could go on
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: and on and on about some of the things that
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: some of the documentaries and stuff that have come out
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: about how young actors are treated in this industry and stuff,
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: and it's good to see that, you know, someone made
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: it through and as and as uh and is thriving
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: and happy, you know what I mean, and regrets.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: She seems super cool. Yeah, all right, Joelle, thank you
