- 0:13What is going on, everybody?
- 0:16Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:40My name is Scott Switzer.
- 0:41I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:42I have with me someone new to the scene,
- 0:46kind of, but not really.
- 0:48Her name is Jenny Hall.
- 0:50You may know her as Dense Updates,
- 0:53but she has popped on the
- 0:54scene giving us updates
- 0:55about all the content going
- 0:57on in the CrossFit space,
- 0:58and we're here to get to know her.
- 1:00So what's going on, Jenny?
- 1:02Hey, good morning.
- 1:02How are you?
- 1:03I'm good.
- 1:04I'm good.
- 1:06So it's funny.
- 1:07I've been following you
- 1:08since before your Dense Updates.
- 1:10Yes.
- 1:11Dense after forty.
- 1:13Yeah.
- 1:13And you were Dense Mom for a minute too,
- 1:15right?
- 1:15Like Dense Mom something.
- 1:17Maybe.
- 1:18I think I changed,
- 1:19I used to change the name
- 1:20in the profile a couple of
- 1:21times just to try to be funny.
- 1:24One time I think I changed
- 1:25my name to Potster.
- 1:27Just like my profile name
- 1:28because I had posted something and
- 1:30a few athletes weren't happy with me.
- 1:32So I, and then I quickly changed it back.
- 1:35That's mom.
- 1:36Yeah.
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:38Um, so, uh,
- 1:39Damien Fink says her stuff has been going,
- 1:41gaining popularity.
- 1:42Well,
- 1:43why do you think we have her on here?
- 1:46Well, I appreciate you having me on.
- 1:48Yeah.
- 1:48And this is your first ever podcast.
- 1:50First ever podcast.
- 1:53We take pride in having
- 1:54people on for the first time.
- 1:56Colton Mertens did his first
- 1:58podcast with us.
- 1:58I love Colton.
- 1:59He's such a good dude.
- 2:02Emma Carey.
- 2:03So that's something we take
- 2:05pride in is people who dive
- 2:06into not necessarily all
- 2:08the big names in the space,
- 2:09but kind of that next tier
- 2:12and hope that they get to
- 2:13that upper tier.
- 2:15So we're super excited to
- 2:17have you on here.
- 2:19I want to start with...
- 2:21learning a little bit more
- 2:21about you and kind of your origin story.
- 2:25Yeah.
- 2:26So I started doing CrossFit
- 2:30in two thousand and ten.
- 2:32So I've been around for
- 2:34quite a while and kind of
- 2:37the typical story, you know,
- 2:39visit a CrossFit gym.
- 2:40Some friends from work had
- 2:41brought me to the gym that they go to and
- 2:44Did a workout and was like, oh my God,
- 2:46that was so hard.
- 2:47But then was like finding
- 2:48myself back there the next
- 2:50day and then the next day.
- 2:52And then my week trial was
- 2:53up and I was like, yeah, sign me up.
- 2:56And then just never looked back.
- 2:59Here we are, fourteen years later.
- 3:01That was all the way back in
- 3:02two thousand ten.
- 3:03So the end of two thousand ten,
- 3:07just before my thirtieth birthday,
- 3:08I was just kind of like
- 3:10looking for something different.
- 3:12I'd already done, you know,
- 3:14like running on the
- 3:14treadmill and narrow stance
- 3:18squats in the rack at
- 3:19Lifetime Fitness kind of thing.
- 3:21And I was just looking for
- 3:22something different.
- 3:23And the guys that I worked
- 3:26with came back from lunch
- 3:27one day and they were all
- 3:28sweaty and gross.
- 3:29And I'm like, where did you guys go?
- 3:31And they're like,
- 3:32Oh,
- 3:32we went in this warehouse and did this
- 3:33workout.
- 3:34It was like P-Ninety X style.
- 3:37You probably wouldn't like it.
- 3:38I'm like, I'll go.
- 3:40And then, yeah, it was brutal.
- 3:42I still remember that first
- 3:43day we had to do wall balls,
- 3:44like on the outside of this warehouse.
- 3:47They didn't have like a wall
- 3:48ball target or anything indoors.
- 3:50It was outside in the sun.
- 3:52just shooting it up on the
- 3:53side of the warehouse wall.
- 3:54Like no line, just throw it anywhere.
- 3:57It was, it was awful.
- 4:00But yeah, I loved it.
- 4:01I'm going to trade it.
- 4:02My first workout ever was Murph.
- 4:04Oh geez.
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:07Yeah.
- 4:07Not, not pretty for a guy.
- 4:09Not the first one.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:12I just remember the wall balls.
- 4:13I honestly don't remember
- 4:14anything else that was in it.
- 4:16Cause I just remember like
- 4:17hitting myself in the face
- 4:18with the ball and like not being able to,
- 4:21get it far up there and
- 4:22looking around like, oh my God,
- 4:24these people must think I'm so foolish.
- 4:29But yeah,
- 4:29then everyone cheers you on and
- 4:30you're like, oh, okay.
- 4:32Yeah.
- 4:33So were you always into fitness?
- 4:35Did you do athletics as a kid?
- 4:38No, I mean, I wasn't an athlete per se.
- 4:40I did dance for a lot of years.
- 4:43When I was nine, my mom, I lived in,
- 4:45I grew up in Northern
- 4:46California and my mom was
- 4:48really into like the country dancing,
- 4:50which doesn't seem like it
- 4:52would be a thing in California.
- 4:54But she would drag me around
- 4:56to all these like family dance things.
- 4:58And I just started,
- 5:00I learned how to dance and then ended up
- 5:02just getting really
- 5:03competitive with that and
- 5:04did that until pretty much
- 5:06until I graduated high school.
- 5:08My junior year,
- 5:09we won a world championship in Nashville.
- 5:12So that was kind of fun, but it was,
- 5:15I say dancing is just as
- 5:16hard as any other kind of sport.
- 5:19There's a lot of eight hour practices,
- 5:22just madness,
- 5:23practicing every night after school for,
- 5:26you know, almost ten years straight.
- 5:30Yeah,
- 5:30I know one of my original co-hosts
- 5:33and still with us is Kat,
- 5:34and she studied ballet all
- 5:36the way up through high school,
- 5:38and the hours she did were
- 5:40just as grueling as anything I did.
- 5:42Yeah.
- 5:42Yeah.
- 5:42Yeah,
- 5:46I got teased a lot for it in high school,
- 5:48but it was good times
- 5:50because we did two-step, country,
- 5:52West Coast swing.
- 5:53Country was not cool back then.
- 5:55It seemed to be a little bit
- 5:56more popular towards the
- 5:57end of high school.
- 5:58Yeah.
- 6:01But it definitely gave me
- 6:03like a lot of body awareness.
- 6:05So I think that kind of
- 6:06transferred over when it
- 6:07came to CrossFit.
- 6:07I picked up pull-ups really quickly,
- 6:10double-unders, things like that,
- 6:13butterfly pull-ups,
- 6:13like that kind of stuff
- 6:14like immediately just made sense to me.
- 6:17Whereas some of the other
- 6:18like technical stuff like
- 6:19in the snatch and ring
- 6:21muscle-ups and things like
- 6:22that were a little bit harder.
- 6:25So I went back through your
- 6:27Instagram and like is back,
- 6:31not as far as I could.
- 6:34And I read a thing where you
- 6:39were diagnosed at one point
- 6:41with something and the
- 6:43doctor wanted you to be
- 6:45less active and to start
- 6:47medication and you chose to
- 6:49take it on with CrossFit.
- 6:51Can you walk us through what
- 6:52happened then?
- 6:54Yeah.
- 6:54So I was probably, let's see,
- 6:59it was before I moved here.
- 7:00So twenty four, twenty five,
- 7:02somewhere around there,
- 7:03I just started feeling like
- 7:04really run down and would get like random,
- 7:08crampy, aching feelings all over my body.
- 7:11And then, you know, I was like, OK,
- 7:13I should probably get out and run more,
- 7:15do stuff like that.
- 7:16And certain things would
- 7:17kind of counterbalance it.
- 7:18And I would find myself
- 7:19feeling better and then not
- 7:20feeling better.
- 7:21But then
- 7:22closer to my thirties,
- 7:23but right before we moved out here, it,
- 7:25it just seemed to take a
- 7:27massive toll on me.
- 7:29And I contribute a lot of
- 7:30that back then to maybe stress,
- 7:32life stress.
- 7:32I was a single mom and
- 7:34living on my own and things like that.
- 7:36But yeah, so went to a couple of doctors.
- 7:40We did all the kinds of blood tests,
- 7:42all the things you could think of.
- 7:43And they basically were just like,
- 7:44we think you have lupus.
- 7:45And I was like, what's that?
- 7:48And then you start looking
- 7:48into it and they're like,
- 7:50can't be out in the sunlight.
- 7:51And yeah,
- 7:52You have to be on therapy medications,
- 7:55you know, to combat all those symptoms.
- 7:58And I'm just like, that doesn't like,
- 7:59I knew a girl in high
- 8:00school that had lupus and it didn't,
- 8:03it didn't seem right to me.
- 8:05And so I wanted to get a second opinion.
- 8:07So I went and saw a couple
- 8:07other doctors and they all
- 8:09kind of came back to the same conclusion.
- 8:11I was like, well, shit.
- 8:13So then I never started my
- 8:15treatment in Arizona where I lived.
- 8:17I waited, I came back out here and,
- 8:19went and saw another doctor.
- 8:21I won't say the name of the clinic,
- 8:22but it's a well-known like
- 8:24rheumatoid arthritis type
- 8:25clinic and they treat lupus as well.
- 8:28And yeah,
- 8:29so they just wanted to start me
- 8:30on therapies and medications.
- 8:31And I was just like that, let me,
- 8:34let me do some research.
- 8:35So I just went down the
- 8:36rabbit hole of different
- 8:37things and it was like, okay, maybe,
- 8:39maybe this stress and my
- 8:40lifestyle has a little bit to do with it.
- 8:42Maybe I should stop smoking.
- 8:44Maybe I shouldn't
- 8:46go out as often with my
- 8:48friends and have drinks or
- 8:50eat Taco Bell and, you know,
- 8:52things like that.
- 8:52So I slowly kind of started
- 8:55doing my own thing there.
- 8:56And then when I found
- 8:57CrossFit shortly after, honestly,
- 9:01I started noticing like big changes.
- 9:05And then it was like six months later,
- 9:07I felt like I had zero symptoms.
- 9:10And haven't had any sense.
- 9:11So I was like, all right, doctors.
- 9:14How much do you attribute to
- 9:15the physical exertion of
- 9:17CrossFit and how much to
- 9:19like changing your diet?
- 9:22I honestly think it was a
- 9:23combination of everything.
- 9:25And it's hard to really say
- 9:26because it wasn't like I just.
- 9:27cut one thing at once I kind
- 9:30of was starting all of it
- 9:31at the same time so it's
- 9:33really hard to say like oh
- 9:34it's because I changed my
- 9:35diet because don't get me
- 9:35wrong like I still would go
- 9:37out with my friends and
- 9:38have drinks every once in a
- 9:39while if I could get a
- 9:40babysitter um and I was
- 9:42still wasn't eating that
- 9:43great it's you know a few
- 9:45years into CrossFit or when
- 9:46people really start like
- 9:48trying the different zone
- 9:49diets and paleo and things
- 9:50like that so at first it
- 9:52was more I was just
- 9:54trying to do what made me
- 9:55feel better and I would cut little things,
- 9:58but, um,
- 10:00I will say like three weeks after
- 10:02doing CrossFit,
- 10:03I quit smoking cold Turkey.
- 10:05Mike was like, I can't do this anymore.
- 10:06I can't breathe during these workouts.
- 10:09And that was great.
- 10:10Yeah.
- 10:11that's got to be a big one
- 10:12yeah I had smoked for many
- 10:15years and now I'm just like
- 10:17it's so gross yeah I grew
- 10:20up in a house with two
- 10:21parents who smoked and um
- 10:23when I moved out like just
- 10:25being around it now I can't
- 10:28even handle it it's yeah um uh but
- 10:33So you're a single mom at the time.
- 10:35How hard is it to work a full-time job,
- 10:38be a single mom and find
- 10:40time for you to get fitness in?
- 10:43Honestly, I mean, it wasn't,
- 10:48it wasn't as hard as I
- 10:49think people would think it would be like,
- 10:51yeah,
- 10:52being a single mom is hard and you
- 10:53got to go to work every day and
- 10:56drive through traffic to get
- 10:57your kids and do all the things.
- 10:58But she would just come
- 11:01along with me and the
- 11:02community was really
- 11:03inviting and welcoming and
- 11:04other people there had kids.
- 11:06And so our kids would kind
- 11:07of just play around outside
- 11:09and it was fun.
- 11:10really more like fun for them.
- 11:11And then sometimes they
- 11:12could come in and like do
- 11:13little workouts by the side of us.
- 11:15I think maybe had it been a
- 11:16different environment of a gym,
- 11:18because I know some gyms
- 11:19are a little more of a
- 11:20younger crowd or more competitive crowd.
- 11:23And at that particular gym I
- 11:25was at at the time, everybody, you know,
- 11:27there were lots of kids running around.
- 11:28So that made it really easy.
- 11:32And honestly, she was such a great kid.
- 11:33She didn't really put up a fuss.
- 11:35Like she'd just come and
- 11:37hang out and she'd cheer us on.
- 11:38And
- 11:40then we go home, eat dinner and go to bed.
- 11:42Uh,
- 11:43I've seen pictures of you and your
- 11:45daughter doing handstand
- 11:47hold like competition.
- 11:49Yeah.
- 11:50Is that your oldest daughter?
- 11:51So that is actually, um, my middle.
- 11:54So my oldest just left for college.
- 11:57She, um,
- 11:59goes to Baylor full ride scholarship.
- 12:03So very lucky there.
- 12:04She's a real smart girl.
- 12:06Um, and she used to do CrossFit with me.
- 12:08Um,
- 12:09She'd been around it since she was five.
- 12:11And then at some point in high school,
- 12:13her academic schedule and
- 12:14all of her extracurriculars
- 12:15kind of got in the way.
- 12:16So it took a backseat,
- 12:18but she's hoping to start back up.
- 12:20And then that's my middle
- 12:21child in the most recent videos.
- 12:24She's been doing gymnastics
- 12:25now for about a year.
- 12:27And so I'm always like, come on, Madison,
- 12:29let's go.
- 12:29Let's see.
- 12:30Can you beat mom?
- 12:30Let's go.
- 12:31And she's getting there.
- 12:34She's going to beat me soon.
- 12:38So it's so cool.
- 12:39Cause like I have a similar story.
- 12:41If I tried to go to like
- 12:42lifetime with my daughter,
- 12:44it would have never worked.
- 12:45No.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:46When you go to CrossFit and,
- 12:48and you're there with five
- 12:50other sets of parents who
- 12:51all brought their kids and
- 12:52then those kids kind of get
- 12:54to know each other and grow up together.
- 12:56Yeah.
- 12:56It actually became a beautiful thing.
- 12:58And my daughter just
- 12:59graduated from college.
- 13:00So like I'm even on another step up, um,
- 13:04which is crazy.
- 13:05Yeah, it is crazy.
- 13:07I love seeing all the kids.
- 13:08Like our gym is,
- 13:10has grown a lot over the years,
- 13:13but we've always had like a tight,
- 13:16like mom group, we call it.
- 13:19So at one point I wasn't
- 13:21working full time and I was
- 13:22at home taking care of the two littles.
- 13:24And so
- 13:25Our mom class kind of just
- 13:26all of a sudden just blew up.
- 13:28It was ten or twelve of us moms,
- 13:30and all of us brought the kids,
- 13:31and they'd all play.
- 13:32And now all the kids do CrossFit Kids,
- 13:34and they compete with each other.
- 13:36And we're getting to kind of
- 13:37see the evolution of their
- 13:39fitness along with ours.
- 13:42It's really cool.
- 13:43So you have one going off to college,
- 13:45and you have two others.
- 13:46How old are they?
- 13:48Two more girls.
- 13:49So three girls total.
- 13:51Eight and nine.
- 13:52Oh, nice.
- 13:53Nice.
- 13:54Yeah.
- 13:54So back to back, um, I got remarried, um,
- 13:58had Matson in, um,
- 13:59did that part that did that open pregnant,
- 14:06had her at the end of may
- 14:08or at the beginning of may, I'm sorry.
- 14:09And then found out when she
- 14:11was five months old that I
- 14:12was pregnant with my youngest.
- 14:15Um, she was kind of a surprise.
- 14:17Um,
- 14:17so had to do the next year's open also
- 14:20pregnant.
- 14:21which was fun.
- 14:24Yeah.
- 14:25And did I see in your
- 14:26Instagram that with one of the kids,
- 14:28your water actually broke
- 14:29while working out?
- 14:30Yes.
- 14:31With the little, with the youngest.
- 14:33Yeah.
- 14:34I,
- 14:34so I actually had to be put on bedrest
- 14:36for a couple of weeks with her.
- 14:39My blood pressure was
- 14:40getting really high and
- 14:42they attributed it to just
- 14:43having babies so close back to back.
- 14:45Like they say,
- 14:45your uterus doesn't have time to,
- 14:47you know,
- 14:47I didn't get to do all the birth
- 14:48fit things and the things
- 14:49that are out there now that
- 14:50kind of help you with
- 14:51pelvic floor issues and
- 14:53all that sort of stuff.
- 14:54And so they say just having
- 14:54them so close back to back.
- 14:56But anyways,
- 14:57I was on bed rest for a couple
- 14:58of weeks and then they
- 14:59released me and they're like, oh,
- 15:00you're fine.
- 15:01And I want to say about a
- 15:02week and a half later.
- 15:03Yeah.
- 15:04We're just doing a wall ball
- 15:05workout and about twelve wall balls in.
- 15:08Everyone's like, oh, my God.
- 15:13And they just ran me out to the car,
- 15:14grabbed my kid out of the
- 15:15child care and drove myself
- 15:18to the hospital.
- 15:18And four hours later, there's Lucy.
- 15:21Wow.
- 15:22Yeah.
- 15:23What a testament though,
- 15:24that you're able to work
- 15:25out all the way up, uh, until that point.
- 15:28Yeah.
- 15:29I actually felt really good with,
- 15:31with both of them.
- 15:32Like never really had any kind of issues.
- 15:35I'd scale where I needed to scale.
- 15:37Um,
- 15:38the first one I did a little bit more
- 15:40running longer throughout that pregnancy,
- 15:42but with the second one,
- 15:44I didn't feel like running as much.
- 15:45So I cut that back really early on.
- 15:48Um,
- 15:49But like after Madison,
- 15:50after my middle child, she,
- 15:52I was back in the gym like
- 15:54a week and a half later and
- 15:55I felt really good.
- 15:56And I think I even did a
- 15:58competition that summer.
- 16:01I recovered pretty quickly from her.
- 16:05So my next question to you
- 16:07is you join a CrossFit gym, you, you have,
- 16:10you're diagnosed with lupus and,
- 16:13and you figure out a way
- 16:14around traditional medical
- 16:16treatment and you go more,
- 16:19more organic and it works.
- 16:21Right.
- 16:22And so you've got to be, you know,
- 16:24they say CrossFitters love
- 16:26to talk about CrossFit.
- 16:28Like it,
- 16:28it had to change your life so much.
- 16:31Did, could, did you shut up about it ever?
- 16:34No, I mean, I'm, I was definitely that,
- 16:36that CrossFetter that is
- 16:37telling everybody at work
- 16:38and trying to get everybody to join.
- 16:40And, um, yeah,
- 16:43talking about it with my
- 16:44family and trying to get my
- 16:45family to go telling them
- 16:46how good I felt and,
- 16:48and they could see it.
- 16:48Like the people around you, it doesn't,
- 16:50you don't have to tell them all the time.
- 16:52They can see the differences
- 16:53in your body and your skin
- 16:54and all of the things.
- 16:56Um, so yeah, I definitely, and I still,
- 17:01even to this day, I mean,
- 17:03I will preach.
- 17:04It's the best thing that
- 17:05ever happened to me.
- 17:07Yeah.
- 17:07Amen to that.
- 17:08Yeah.
- 17:09I totally agree there.
- 17:10And, but the hardest,
- 17:12the hardest people to
- 17:12convince her family.
- 17:14Oh yeah.
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:16Friends, friends,
- 17:17you can get them to jump on board.
- 17:19Yeah.
- 17:21Family, not so much.
- 17:24So my brother and his wife did CrossFit.
- 17:26They lived down in Houston
- 17:27for a while and they went to,
- 17:28I want to say it was CrossFit Memorial.
- 17:32And they had an elite athlete there.
- 17:34I think she was a regional
- 17:36athlete at the time.
- 17:37And they did CrossFit there,
- 17:38and then they did CrossFit in Jersey.
- 17:40And now they live just outside Columbus,
- 17:44and they still do it.
- 17:46I have several siblings,
- 17:48but my little brother was
- 17:49the only one that did CrossFit.
- 17:51What state, Columbus?
- 17:54Columbus, Ohio.
- 17:55So where I'm at.
- 17:57Oh, yeah.
- 17:58So he's, well,
- 18:00he's not right outside Columbus.
- 18:01He's in Stowe.
- 18:01Do you know where that is?
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:05Okay.
- 18:07Yeah, I'm up north.
- 18:08I'm in Polaris.
- 18:09Polaris.
- 18:10So I go to what was Christy
- 18:13Arum O'Connell's gym.
- 18:15Oh, okay.
- 18:16And then she just sold the
- 18:17gym like three weeks ago.
- 18:19Oh, wow.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:20So, but yeah, it's the same vibe still.
- 18:24Yeah.
- 18:25They sold it to two members of the gym.
- 18:27She's doing the programming
- 18:28right now for .com, right?
- 18:29Or was it last week?
- 18:31Yeah.
- 18:32And then I saw something.
- 18:33It was like IBEX training.
- 18:35Is that her personal
- 18:36training platform that she does?
- 18:38Her and her husband, Patrick.
- 18:40Her husband is like an
- 18:41eight-time regional athlete.
- 18:42A lot of people don't even know that.
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:45I did not know that.
- 18:46But he created IBEX training,
- 18:48which is just like HWPO.
- 18:52You can buy it.
- 18:54one track um and it's it can
- 18:57be it can be used for
- 18:58affiliates it can be used
- 18:59for an individual it can be
- 19:00compete but it has
- 19:02different levels um and
- 19:04then yeah it's it's the
- 19:06best programming I've ever
- 19:07done in my life really the
- 19:09most right the most fun for
- 19:11me because I'm not a
- 19:12competitive athlete I'm
- 19:13just gonna have fun and
- 19:14stay fit have you tried
- 19:16them all like have you tried all like
- 19:18like the mayhem and the HWPO.
- 19:20And I used to go to a different gym who,
- 19:22who went through a couple different, uh,
- 19:24programs.
- 19:25Uh, so they did comp train,
- 19:27they did mayhem.
- 19:28Uh, I've,
- 19:30I've seen HWPO and tried a couple of days,
- 19:33but that's so like intense.
- 19:36And we were, we had a short,
- 19:40a short spurt on HWPO after the twenty,
- 19:43twenty two games.
- 19:44Our gym was on that for a little while.
- 19:46And then we went back to our
- 19:47traditional programming,
- 19:49which is Marco Coppola's dense protocol,
- 19:52which we've pretty much all
- 19:53been on aside from that time at HWPU.
- 19:57Yeah,
- 19:57what I like about the IBEX is it's a
- 19:59lot of interval training.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02And I seem to respond to
- 20:03that better than like just
- 20:06straight up long.
- 20:07And I say that,
- 20:09but like we have every
- 20:10Thursday was a like long, long workout.
- 20:13Mm-hmm.
- 20:14Forty minutes.
- 20:15Mm-hmm.
- 20:15And I don't know.
- 20:17I just really liked it.
- 20:18I enjoyed it compared to
- 20:19Mayhem and Comp Train for sure.
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:23So were you at,
- 20:23did you go to the Rogue
- 20:24Invitational when it was
- 20:25the first year it was there?
- 20:28Uh, first, first three years.
- 20:30Yeah.
- 20:31So the second year was COVID
- 20:32and I was a judge.
- 20:35So I was sex and panchecks
- 20:36judge for that when they did it online.
- 20:39Oh, okay.
- 20:40Yep.
- 20:41Yeah.
- 20:41Uh, so yeah, both in Columbus though.
- 20:45Yeah.
- 20:46We went to that first year in Columbus.
- 20:47That was, that was pretty awesome.
- 20:51Before they started that,
- 20:52it was just a grass field
- 20:54in front of the country.
- 20:56And they turned it into a stadium,
- 20:57which was really cool.
- 20:59It was really cool.
- 21:01I love Rogue.
- 21:03My old office is only five
- 21:05minutes from them,
- 21:06which was really dangerous.
- 21:07Oh, wow.
- 21:08Yeah.
- 21:09You'd be like, oh,
- 21:10I'm just going to stop over
- 21:11here on my lunch break.
- 21:12Yeah.
- 21:14Corey Leonard says interval training.
- 21:16You say,
- 21:16have you heard of our Lord and Savior?
- 21:20Brandon Luckett.
- 21:20Corey, we have heard.
- 21:27So, yeah.
- 21:28So you you're in you're in CrossFit now.
- 21:32What was the switch to like
- 21:34make you a fan of the sport?
- 21:37Honestly, I was immediately a fan.
- 21:40So when I started in twenty
- 21:43ten and then and that was
- 21:45at the end of the year and
- 21:46everyone was talking about
- 21:48this online open.
- 21:49So the first year of the
- 21:50online open twenty eleven.
- 21:52At the beginning of the year.
- 21:53And I was like, well, what's that?
- 21:55And so I immediately hit the
- 21:57internet and I came across
- 22:00a video that was put out.
- 22:02It's Dave Castro, Greg Glassman,
- 22:05Nicole Carroll, Josh Everett,
- 22:06Tony Budding.
- 22:07They're all talking about CrossFit Games.
- 22:09I don't know if you remember that video.
- 22:12Um,
- 22:13but they're talking about the history
- 22:14of the games and they go
- 22:15through being out on, you know,
- 22:16Rancho de Castro and
- 22:18Woodstock of fitness and all that stuff.
- 22:21And after watching that video, I was like,
- 22:24okay, I need to see more.
- 22:26And so from there, it was like,
- 22:28I would consume any and all
- 22:30content I could find when
- 22:31it came to the CrossFit games.
- 22:34And it's always the big hype.
- 22:35It was so exciting that time of year.
- 22:36And you're watching the
- 22:37leaderboard and you're
- 22:38going to look on YouTube to
- 22:39see if anyone's posted videos and,
- 22:42Yeah, instant fan.
- 22:46It was weird for me because
- 22:47I started CrossFit in two thousand eleven,
- 22:50probably a year after you did.
- 22:52But my gym, they weren't,
- 22:54there were no elite athletes.
- 22:55There was no like talk of,
- 22:58they didn't even do the open.
- 22:59Okay.
- 23:00It wasn't until twenty
- 23:02thirteen that three of us
- 23:03decided to sign up.
- 23:06Me and my two buddies and we
- 23:08were like the guinea pigs to first do it.
- 23:10And then the next year it
- 23:12blew up like you paved the
- 23:13way for your gym.
- 23:15Yeah.
- 23:15The bad thing is there's
- 23:16still videos of me out
- 23:18there trying to get my
- 23:19first chest of our pool
- 23:20hanging from the pull up
- 23:21bar for like seven minutes.
- 23:24I think there was like sixty
- 23:26five pounds snatched that
- 23:27first year and I couldn't
- 23:28even snatch that.
- 23:29I was like it was it was awful,
- 23:31but it was fun.
- 23:32It was fun because it kind
- 23:33of made you feel like you
- 23:34were a part of everything.
- 23:35Right.
- 23:35Like you could follow around
- 23:36with the people that were
- 23:36just super amazing.
- 23:38But then you could also kind
- 23:39of participate in your own way.
- 23:41And I think there's
- 23:43something to be said for that too.
- 23:44Like if you,
- 23:45if your gym has more like
- 23:46competitive athletes,
- 23:48then there is going to be
- 23:49that instant awareness of
- 23:53the bigger stage,
- 23:54the games and everything
- 23:55that's going on there.
- 23:56So yeah,
- 23:57like we had some athletes that had
- 23:59a team that year at regionals.
- 24:02And when I say regionals,
- 24:04it was like in a field in
- 24:05the country where
- 24:07And like some small part of
- 24:08Houston that you didn't
- 24:10even know existed.
- 24:11And I remember like tugging
- 24:13my cooler and my kid and
- 24:15all my shit out there
- 24:16across the lawn to get to
- 24:18the bleachers that are at
- 24:19the back of this property.
- 24:20And there were like four
- 24:22sets of wooden bleachers
- 24:23all around the little thing
- 24:24they had outlined or the arena floor.
- 24:28Yeah, it was pretty crazy.
- 24:30And so from there, it was like, oh, well,
- 24:32this is really cool.
- 24:33And I started getting to
- 24:34know those local athletes.
- 24:36So it was back when like
- 24:37Asia Bardo was coming up
- 24:39and Carrie Kepler and Lisa Teal.
- 24:41And yeah,
- 24:43I even remember I still have like
- 24:45one of those really old
- 24:46books that they made with
- 24:47all the athletes in it from
- 24:48the regional that year.
- 24:49It's pretty cool.
- 24:51Yeah,
- 24:52we were lucky here in Columbus
- 24:53because it was held at our fairgrounds,
- 24:56the Ohio State Fairgrounds.
- 24:58Yeah.
- 24:58And then this region was
- 25:01just jam-packed full of the
- 25:03Rich Froning stuff, Graham Holzer,
- 25:06Marcus Hendren.
- 25:07Yeah.
- 25:09So when I dove into that first Open,
- 25:11then I wanted everything about the sport.
- 25:15I wanted to follow this the
- 25:16whole way through.
- 25:17And that year, all those guys were at our,
- 25:22our regional here in
- 25:23Columbus and I was hooked for life.
- 25:25Yeah, it's definitely, it's,
- 25:28it's such a cool
- 25:29environment to be around.
- 25:31It was so exciting.
- 25:32And I brought the kit,
- 25:32my daughter and she loved it.
- 25:34And a lot of people from our
- 25:35gym came and then it kind
- 25:36of just got to be a thing.
- 25:37Okay, well now we have to go next year.
- 25:39And then the next year it was,
- 25:40it moved into a bigger
- 25:41stadium and then the next year.
- 25:43So I started at a gym.
- 25:45I was there for two and a half years.
- 25:46And then, um,
- 25:48some of the coaches there had
- 25:50met Marco and he was going
- 25:52to open up his gym.
- 25:54And a lot of people kind of
- 25:54liked what he was doing
- 25:56with his programming and
- 25:57things like that.
- 25:57So I kind of went to go
- 25:59check it out and yeah,
- 26:02so started with him.
- 26:03And then they immediately,
- 26:04that gym immediately had a
- 26:05team at regionals, um,
- 26:09And then pretty much every
- 26:10year we had a team at regional.
- 26:11So it was like, we, the whole gym would go,
- 26:13we, our whole crew, we'd all, you know,
- 26:15get hotels together and,
- 26:18and go watch the team and support.
- 26:19We've got all the shirts
- 26:21from every year regionals
- 26:22on all that stuff.
- 26:23So we've w we're probably
- 26:26one of the more like
- 26:26hardcore fan gems in the area.
- 26:29I would say just because of that fact.
- 26:33Yeah, I love it.
- 26:34The community aspect of it
- 26:36is the best part.
- 26:36It really is.
- 26:38It's so awesome.
- 26:39I'm like,
- 26:40I don't understand why more
- 26:41people don't want to do this.
- 26:44Yeah.
- 26:45It's so much fun.
- 26:45Hi, Barry.
- 26:46Yeah, so now you're consuming it all.
- 26:52Yeah.
- 26:53If I look at your Instagram
- 26:55before you switch over to Dense Updates,
- 26:58it was a lot of your progress,
- 27:01like kind of showing what
- 27:02you're doing in the gym.
- 27:04And the cool part is you're
- 27:06making these videos where
- 27:07you're showing what you're
- 27:08doing in the gym and then
- 27:10you're showing like the
- 27:11same movement in real life.
- 27:14right?
- 27:15Like you're lifting a sandbag,
- 27:16you turn and now it's,
- 27:17you're holding your
- 27:18daughter or those are fun for a deadlift.
- 27:21And then you're lifting a
- 27:22laundry basket or like,
- 27:24I thought those were really cool.
- 27:26Thank you.
- 27:26That was a lot of fun.
- 27:27We are, um, our gym owner was pushing, um,
- 27:31like a media challenge this summer.
- 27:33And I was trying to think of
- 27:34just more creative ways.
- 27:35Cause usually it's just me
- 27:37and my group of friends
- 27:38lifting or doing whatever.
- 27:39And sometimes I would Mike
- 27:40us up and just catch some
- 27:42of our funny moments and
- 27:44I don't know how many people
- 27:45even ever watch those,
- 27:46but we thought they were funny.
- 27:49Um, but then the challenge was like, uh,
- 27:51it kind of like pushed me to, you know,
- 27:53try something different.
- 27:54And so, um, yeah, I was like, how can I,
- 27:58how can I use some of this
- 27:59movement and show how
- 28:00functional it is and how you're,
- 28:02you're probably already
- 28:03doing those things.
- 28:04You just don't realize it.
- 28:05And so, yeah,
- 28:06I really liked the one with the, um,
- 28:08the clean into the push jerk.
- 28:10And it was like,
- 28:10I was picking something up
- 28:11in the closet and putting
- 28:12it up into the shelf overhead.
- 28:16Yeah, those were fun.
- 28:17And then I got my daughter
- 28:18in on that sandbag one.
- 28:21Yeah, they were brilliant.
- 28:22And those are things that I
- 28:24think like CrossFit Media
- 28:25should use to promote the methodology.
- 28:28Like I think it's to show
- 28:31like the reason you're
- 28:32doing this is so that for
- 28:33the rest of your life,
- 28:34you can do the everyday
- 28:36things in your home.
- 28:37Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:38And more affiliates too.
- 28:39Like our gym owner had a
- 28:41great idea there doing that,
- 28:42that media challenge and trying to get,
- 28:44it was kind of like we
- 28:44could all get points for our content.
- 28:46And at the end of the summer,
- 28:48he'd pick a winner or, you know,
- 28:49pick a winner,
- 28:50whoever had the most points.
- 28:51So it's like getting your,
- 28:53your member base involved
- 28:54to make that content and
- 28:55put that out there as well.
- 28:56Just gets more eyes on it.
- 28:57And yeah,
- 28:59like you can tag CrossFit and
- 29:00maybe they'll collaborate, but it really,
- 29:03it's us and the people in
- 29:04the gyms and the affiliates that,
- 29:06are putting the most content
- 29:07out there and making the
- 29:08most impact in that way.
- 29:10Have you ever got CrossFit to collaborate?
- 29:14I do not believe so.
- 29:17Just checking.
- 29:17I have to think about that.
- 29:20I don't think so.
- 29:20No.
- 29:21And all the stuff that I've
- 29:22tagged them in one time, they,
- 29:24they shared.
- 29:27Yeah.
- 29:28Collaborated.
- 29:29Yeah.
- 29:30If they dive a little further down my,
- 29:33my Instagram, I think I have a comp,
- 29:36video on there of me and my bestie.
- 29:40And the shirts that year
- 29:41were a little controversial,
- 29:42so that might be why they
- 29:44wouldn't want to post any of my stuff.
- 29:49Yeah, just said Trump won.
- 29:54Rich Froning thought it was cool.
- 29:55He was there that year.
- 29:57It was at BCS,
- 29:57the one that he programs for.
- 29:59Yeah, yeah.
- 30:00Yeah, yeah.
- 30:01Like right after all that drama.
- 30:03So it was fitting.
- 30:04That looks like a fun
- 30:05competition to go to someday.
- 30:07That's a good one.
- 30:08That's definitely one of the
- 30:09bigger ones around here
- 30:10that our gym does every year.
- 30:12That one in TFX, that one's coming up.
- 30:14We've got a lot of teams
- 30:15that are going to be competing there.
- 30:17And I love that they're
- 30:17throwing masters in now.
- 30:19That's good for us old folk
- 30:21because I'm not going to lie,
- 30:23it gets hard when you're in
- 30:24your forties to keep up
- 30:25with those twenty-year-olds.
- 30:27It does.
- 30:27Yeah.
- 30:29So see the big jug says, wait,
- 30:31did I meet Jenny at the
- 30:32twenty twenty three games
- 30:33with a baby that said get to the chopper?
- 30:37No, actually we did not go that year.
- 30:39I was at twenty twenty four.
- 30:41I was there this year and
- 30:42then twenty twenty to our
- 30:44team in Madison.
- 30:46And that was really cool.
- 30:47I didn't get to go.
- 30:48Our team went in twenty
- 30:50sixteen out in Carson,
- 30:52but I just had my youngest
- 30:54child and then the other
- 30:56one was still in diapers.
- 30:57And I was just like, there's no way we're.
- 30:59even going to try this with
- 31:00a one month old and the
- 31:02other one I was like that
- 31:03would have just been zero
- 31:04fun for us and I didn't
- 31:05want to put them through
- 31:06that especially it being
- 31:08outdoors and in the sun the
- 31:09whole time I was like
- 31:10that's just too much
- 31:12preparation so I had to
- 31:13sadly watch that one from home
- 31:15So my, my next question is you,
- 31:19you make this transition from these,
- 31:22these videos about you and
- 31:24you kind of getting better
- 31:25to now like updating
- 31:27everybody on what's going on,
- 31:29on all the different
- 31:30content aspects in the
- 31:31space and the timing of that.
- 31:34I know that you're,
- 31:35you're friends with Marco
- 31:37and his kind of like first
- 31:40uh,
- 31:41video on what happened at the games out
- 31:44and you start doing these
- 31:45updates almost the exact same time.
- 31:47Yeah.
- 31:49Was that just coincidence or, um, no,
- 31:52I mean,
- 31:53so because I consume so much
- 31:56content and I have that
- 31:58long history of knowing all
- 32:00the things I'm kind of
- 32:02always been known as that
- 32:03person in the gym.
- 32:03Like if they want to ask a
- 32:05question about something or they,
- 32:06somebody will randomly come up and be like,
- 32:08Ginny,
- 32:08what was that one workout that one
- 32:09year at the open and this or that or,
- 32:11you know,
- 32:12and ninety nine point nine
- 32:14percent of the time I have the answer.
- 32:16So it's kind of just like, go ask Ginny.
- 32:18She knows, you know, one of those things.
- 32:19And so I've always thought
- 32:22about wanting to do something like this.
- 32:25I just.
- 32:28I don't know.
- 32:28It just was never the right time.
- 32:30I was either too busy with
- 32:31work or personal life or whatever.
- 32:35And then everything kind of
- 32:36happened at the games.
- 32:38And then there was just so
- 32:40much content all at one
- 32:43time and just everywhere.
- 32:45And, you know,
- 32:47people would be asking me in
- 32:48the gym and I'm just like,
- 32:49I'm going to just make a video.
- 32:50I'm like,
- 32:51I'm just going to all the stuff
- 32:52I've consumed.
- 32:53I'm just going to try to
- 32:54lump it all together in ninety seconds.
- 32:56And there you go.
- 32:58And so that's kind of how that started.
- 33:02It did help that Marco was
- 33:03also putting out content
- 33:04because I could kind of use that as well.
- 33:07But there are so many voices in the space.
- 33:10And, you know,
- 33:10with Sevan and Talking Elite
- 33:13Fitness and you guys and Barbell Spin.
- 33:15And there's just so much out there.
- 33:18And then aside from Instagram, it's like,
- 33:20oh,
- 33:20people all ask someone if they had
- 33:22seen something.
- 33:22And they're like, oh, no,
- 33:23I didn't see that.
- 33:24So that's kind of where it stemmed from.
- 33:28did you anticipate like the
- 33:31response you would get and
- 33:32how many people started watching these?
- 33:36No, I mean, honestly, none of my,
- 33:39I would say if you go back and look,
- 33:41a lot of my videos are kind
- 33:42of like around the one
- 33:43thousand to fifteen hundred view.
- 33:45Like I just figured somebody
- 33:46might come across something
- 33:48or but if somebody happens to share it,
- 33:50then you see that it gets
- 33:51more views and that sort of thing.
- 33:52But
- 33:53honestly I didn't really
- 33:55have any expectations for
- 33:56it I just wanted to put it
- 33:57out there and if somebody
- 33:58finds it great if if not
- 34:02okay it's there if you ever
- 34:03want to find it so what I
- 34:06love about it is like the
- 34:09weekend I was in birmingham
- 34:10with the masters right I
- 34:13because I was there all day
- 34:15I had no time to to consume
- 34:17any content yeah
- 34:18So then for my drive home,
- 34:20I go to your Instagram to
- 34:22hear what are the hot
- 34:23topics where they're at.
- 34:26And then I line up my queue
- 34:27to listen on the drive home.
- 34:29Yeah.
- 34:31And it it's perfect.
- 34:32And if I ever get like,
- 34:34where I just need balance in
- 34:35my life and I need some
- 34:36family time and I just
- 34:38check out for a day,
- 34:39I can go to your update and see, okay,
- 34:42who said what, where,
- 34:43and where do I need to go,
- 34:45like get caught up.
- 34:47And it really helps me sort
- 34:48out like what I'm going to listen to.
- 34:51Yay.
- 34:52Well, I love that.
- 34:53And I don't know if you even
- 34:55had that intention of it,
- 34:57but it helps me tremendously.
- 34:59Yeah, I mean,
- 35:00I guess that really is the
- 35:02intent behind it because of
- 35:03the fact that there are so
- 35:04many things out there and
- 35:05people might not know what
- 35:07they're missing.
- 35:09It's like if you can try to
- 35:10just touch on a little bit of everything,
- 35:12then they can decide for
- 35:13themselves what they want
- 35:14to go listen to.
- 35:16Yeah.
- 35:17I did a poll the other day
- 35:18because I was just curious
- 35:19like how many of the people
- 35:21that do regularly follow me
- 35:22or even bother to look at my story,
- 35:24I wanted to see like what
- 35:25content they're consuming regularly.
- 35:27And so it was just, you know,
- 35:28which podcast,
- 35:29and it was basically all the podcasts,
- 35:30which ones do you watch the
- 35:32froning and you guys and
- 35:34spin and all the ones that
- 35:35I already talked about and sub on.
- 35:36And it's,
- 35:37it seems to be a lot of the
- 35:38people who consume the same
- 35:40amount of content are the
- 35:42ones that are following along as well.
- 35:44So I found that interesting.
- 35:47Yeah.
- 35:48Just because they know a lot
- 35:49of that content already.
- 35:50Right.
- 35:51But they're still coming to
- 35:53my page to check it out.
- 35:55So that's cool.
- 35:57Have you noticed a shift in
- 35:59the responses you get now
- 36:01on your Instagram or the DMs?
- 36:04No, I don't.
- 36:05I usually would just,
- 36:08I wouldn't get a ton of DMs.
- 36:10There's a couple of people
- 36:12who like really want to
- 36:13talk in depth about stuff.
- 36:16And I'll respond.
- 36:17Like I try to respond to everybody, but no,
- 36:21no change.
- 36:21Just like a couple of people
- 36:23have actually commented on the videos,
- 36:24just being like, Hey, thanks.
- 36:25Appreciate it.
- 36:26Keep it up.
- 36:27which I think is cool.
- 36:28So I don't,
- 36:30right now I don't spend a ton
- 36:32of time on making the video.
- 36:34Cause like I told you earlier, I,
- 36:36I just try to just go off the fly.
- 36:38Like what I remember I
- 36:38consumed and what key
- 36:40things I think people might
- 36:41want to know about.
- 36:42And then I just kind of, you know,
- 36:44plug them all in and make
- 36:46the videos and trim where needed.
- 36:47If I start rambling.
- 36:51Yeah.
- 36:53That's my train of thought there.
- 36:54Your iPhone to do it all.
- 36:56Yeah.
- 36:57I'm just using my iPhone.
- 36:58I have like a little iPhone stand that I,
- 37:00the same one I use at the
- 37:01gym and I just pull it up
- 37:03and find some sunlight and
- 37:07get to recording.
- 37:09Um, Corey Lawrence says,
- 37:11I'm not one of those people.
- 37:12I like dark humor and blueberry.
- 37:13Um,
- 37:19So do you have hard, fast rules?
- 37:21Like you say,
- 37:22what would I can get in in
- 37:23ninety seconds?
- 37:23Do you go by the Instagram
- 37:25real rules like you make
- 37:27sure it's under ninety every time or?
- 37:31Yeah, I mean,
- 37:31right now I'm only doing them
- 37:33on Instagram.
- 37:34I have been like posting
- 37:36them over to the YouTube channel as well.
- 37:37I did make one YouTube video
- 37:39and that was just kind of
- 37:41me breaking down the
- 37:42timeline because I had a
- 37:43lot of people at my at the gym and
- 37:46Just be like, oh,
- 37:46if I sit down to read that timeline,
- 37:48it's going to take me like
- 37:49an hour because it was so in depth.
- 37:51And I mean, it was so good.
- 37:54It was so detailed.
- 37:55So I just kind of went
- 37:56through it and read some of
- 37:57the all of the stuff that
- 37:59really stood out to me.
- 38:00And that's, you know,
- 38:00some of the stuff we didn't
- 38:01know and and things like that.
- 38:04But other than that, yeah,
- 38:05I'm just doing the ninety
- 38:06second reels right now.
- 38:09Do you see... So I noticed early on,
- 38:14it was just, hey,
- 38:16Siobhan talked about this.
- 38:17Hey, if you go over to Hiller,
- 38:19he did this with Danny, blah, blah, blah.
- 38:22Then as you've gone along,
- 38:26you're inserting a little
- 38:27bit of your own editorial comments now.
- 38:31Like the courage is growing.
- 38:34Now you're throwing in more.
- 38:36Do you see...
- 38:37a desire for that to grow
- 38:40even more into like a
- 38:41longer format or do you
- 38:43want to just stick with what you have?
- 38:46Um, I'm trying.
- 38:49I'm trying to keep those
- 38:52updates completely unbiased, right?
- 38:54Like just give people
- 38:55everything that's out there.
- 38:57Like whether or not I agree
- 38:59with the content or not,
- 39:00I'm still consuming it.
- 39:01Like there's definitely some
- 39:02people out there I don't
- 39:03enjoy listening to,
- 39:04but I'm going to consume it anyway.
- 39:06Just because I feel like for me to have,
- 39:08to be able to give that
- 39:09back to the people,
- 39:10you have to give them
- 39:10everything so they can see
- 39:11from every side of it.
- 39:13Um, so there,
- 39:16there might be a space where
- 39:18I would make videos, you know,
- 39:22with more of like my, my side of thing,
- 39:25my input on certain things.
- 39:26But right now I feel like
- 39:29Hiller does a really good job.
- 39:30He's a big personality in the space.
- 39:33And, um,
- 39:36Yeah,
- 39:37so I don't see myself going full-on
- 39:39YouTube video personality
- 39:42and that sort of thing.
- 39:43I really enjoy doing the updates,
- 39:44honestly.
- 39:47Okay.
- 39:48Yeah.
- 39:48Uh, cause I could,
- 39:49the way you're inserting
- 39:51some editorial stuff, I could see you.
- 39:54Well,
- 39:54I feel very strongly about the PFAA
- 39:57stuff.
- 39:57And so, and I'll just be,
- 39:58I don't know if that's what
- 39:59you're speaking on, but the, um,
- 40:02in particular,
- 40:03John Woolley had made like an,
- 40:04he was doing like a news
- 40:05update video that I've
- 40:07never seen him do before.
- 40:08And I was like, Oh, okay.
- 40:09Somebody else had a good idea.
- 40:11Yeah.
- 40:13And it was like five minutes long,
- 40:14but it was just like,
- 40:15here's what's going on in
- 40:16the last week kind of thing
- 40:17and talked about this and
- 40:19talked about that and then
- 40:20entered some stuff with the PFAA.
- 40:22And I was just kind of like, oh, well,
- 40:24all right.
- 40:25But we kind of,
- 40:25we're leaving some things out.
- 40:27And I feel like if you're
- 40:27leaving things out,
- 40:28then you're kind of leaving
- 40:29that open for
- 40:30interpretation or maybe just
- 40:33trying to push like a
- 40:35certain narrative that you
- 40:37want people to hear,
- 40:38which it's his platform.
- 40:39He can do whatever he wants.
- 40:40But I just wanted to
- 40:43kind of add on that and I
- 40:45was in my car that day and
- 40:46I'd been sitting in traffic
- 40:47for like an hour and a half
- 40:48and I was just listening to
- 40:50this and I was just like
- 40:51well wait a minute let's
- 40:53because he specifically
- 40:55like addresses a specific
- 40:56question and I was like
- 40:57well you didn't really
- 40:58answer that question and so
- 41:01yeah that might that there
- 41:04there's probably going to
- 41:04be those times that's just
- 41:06me you might get a random
- 41:08video where I'm just gonna
- 41:09be like wait a minute I
- 41:10don't agree with that
- 41:11But I'm trying to just give
- 41:12the people the updates,
- 41:14where to find the stuff,
- 41:16and then they can decide for themselves.
- 41:19Yeah,
- 41:19the PFAA is a... So I have very
- 41:25strong feelings about the PFAA.
- 41:28Yeah.
- 41:28And whenever I remark about it,
- 41:30I get the strongest
- 41:31comments back that I ever get.
- 41:33which it just blows my mind
- 41:35that there's this
- 41:36organization and that's the
- 41:38thing that's triggering everybody.
- 41:39Everybody.
- 41:40Yeah.
- 41:41Like why?
- 41:42Yeah.
- 41:43Like I,
- 41:43you can't say anything bad about
- 41:45Brent or Pat or you're going to,
- 41:46you're going to hear my wrath.
- 41:48Yeah.
- 41:52And I love, I love Pat.
- 41:54I've always like, he's my number one,
- 41:56like this last year at the games.
- 41:58Um,
- 41:59They had a, um,
- 42:01it was like a fan favorite
- 42:02vote that they were doing.
- 42:04And, um, I'm always voting for Pat.
- 42:07Like he's always been one of
- 42:08my favorite male athletes
- 42:09to follow in the sport.
- 42:11Um, but yeah,
- 42:12there's definitely some
- 42:13things I didn't agree with
- 42:15in some of those videos.
- 42:16And I don't think that it's
- 42:18a bad thing for people to
- 42:19be talking about that, honestly.
- 42:21Like, I think it's a good thing.
- 42:22There should,
- 42:22we should all be able to have
- 42:24those open conversations.
- 42:26That's been my answer to the
- 42:28people who are coming after me is,
- 42:29this is an open platform.
- 42:31I never say you can't
- 42:32express your opinion.
- 42:34I can express mine and you
- 42:35can come back with yours
- 42:36and I'll even put it up on the screen.
- 42:39And we can talk about it,
- 42:40but to just shut it all
- 42:42down and say you're
- 42:43unsubscribing and doing
- 42:45whatever because I blasted the PFAA,
- 42:49it's kind of ridiculous.
- 42:51Yeah.
- 42:52And nobody's... I don't feel
- 42:53like anyone's really...
- 42:54blasting them or bashing them.
- 42:56It's just, we, we,
- 42:59we don't necessarily agree
- 43:01with everything,
- 43:02which they've even said themselves,
- 43:04like not everyone's going
- 43:05to agree with you.
- 43:05Not everyone's going to like
- 43:06your decisions,
- 43:07but it's okay for in this
- 43:10space to have opposing
- 43:11opinions on these things.
- 43:13And so, yeah, the people who are like, oh,
- 43:14I'm just not going to follow you anymore.
- 43:15Or, you know,
- 43:17you're a bad person because
- 43:18you think this or that, or yeah, that,
- 43:22I think it has to be tied
- 43:23with Castro because they want him gone.
- 43:26And if you are saying
- 43:28something bad about the PFA,
- 43:29you must be supporting Castro.
- 43:33And I think that's truly the trigger.
- 43:35Yeah.
- 43:37Yeah,
- 43:37there's definitely people who have
- 43:38drawn line in the sand.
- 43:40If you want it this way, then...
- 43:43I don't want anything to do with you.
- 43:44And I just think that's ridiculous.
- 43:47Yeah.
- 43:48My whole beef is like,
- 43:49how is the PFA just by default?
- 43:51The,
- 43:52the people who get to represent the
- 43:53athletes because they're
- 43:55not really representing all the athletes.
- 43:57Yeah.
- 43:58Select few.
- 43:58They've decided that they're
- 44:00going to cover.
- 44:00Yeah.
- 44:02Well,
- 44:02I want to know more about that
- 44:03process too.
- 44:04Cause I don't think that's been said.
- 44:05Like we know that the
- 44:07criteria is to be a voting member,
- 44:09but what's the criteria to
- 44:11be voted in as a board member?
- 44:13because it's kind of all over the place.
- 44:15I think I posted in the
- 44:17comments of that one video
- 44:18to John Woolley, like, well,
- 44:21this is all their names.
- 44:22These are all their stats.
- 44:23Some people haven't even
- 44:24been to a games that are on this board.
- 44:27Like how,
- 44:27how are we determining who we're
- 44:29voting for?
- 44:30Are we just picking anyone
- 44:31from the region that's
- 44:31willing to volunteer and just being like,
- 44:33Oh, you got my vote.
- 44:35Or how does that work?
- 44:38How do you get elected to a
- 44:39board with absolute voting
- 44:42rights when you're not even
- 44:45a voting member of the body?
- 44:48Yeah.
- 44:49Like that doesn't even make sense.
- 44:51It is wild.
- 44:52I would be curious to know
- 44:53more about that.
- 44:55Yeah,
- 44:55and the fact that the only vote that
- 44:57the body gets is who's on the board.
- 44:59Right.
- 45:00Supposedly.
- 45:01Yeah.
- 45:01And then after that,
- 45:02all the other votes are
- 45:03done by the board.
- 45:04Right.
- 45:05They have like what monthly
- 45:08calls where they will invite the members,
- 45:10I think,
- 45:10and then they'll have discussions.
- 45:12And I know they've said one
- 45:15of their last discussions
- 45:16that it wasn't even a
- 45:18majority that agreed with
- 45:19them on certain things.
- 45:20So it's like, well,
- 45:21that's also concerning.
- 45:25But yeah, I find it.
- 45:27We could have a separate show on that.
- 45:28Yeah,
- 45:28we could probably go into a lot of
- 45:29that for sure.
- 45:34So as you have dove into doing this,
- 45:39has it become something
- 45:40you've really started to
- 45:41love and enjoy doing?
- 45:45Yeah, absolutely.
- 45:46I love it.
- 45:47I love, like,
- 45:48if I'm not talking about
- 45:49CrossFit in a day,
- 45:50something's wrong with me.
- 45:51Like, I'm always talking about it.
- 45:53I come home and, you know,
- 45:55my spouse and I will talk about it.
- 45:56I'm talking about it with my
- 45:57friends at the gym.
- 45:59You know,
- 46:00most of my friends are people
- 46:01that go to the gym.
- 46:03Um, so that also helps my closest friends.
- 46:06Um, so yeah, like I, I love all of it.
- 46:09I'm consuming all of it.
- 46:10I'm watching all of it.
- 46:11I'm talking about all of it.
- 46:12I've,
- 46:12I've followed it for so long and
- 46:15through its entire evolution and it's,
- 46:19it becomes a part of your
- 46:20life when you've been doing it for.
- 46:21Fourteen years.
- 46:22It's like,
- 46:23how can you not care about those
- 46:24things and how can you not
- 46:26love it and want to be, you know, I,
- 46:28I tell everybody like I'm a lifer.
- 46:30I could never see myself.
- 46:32doing anything else and not
- 46:33being a part of this community.
- 46:37So what do you see in the future?
- 46:40Just continue doing this or
- 46:44maybe dabbling in some
- 46:46other areas to see what
- 46:47else you might like to put out?
- 46:49Yeah,
- 46:50I'm enjoying doing this right now and
- 46:51kind of seeing where that goes.
- 46:52And yeah,
- 46:54if other opportunities come up or
- 46:56other ideas come to me, then
- 46:59Yeah, I'm going to explore them.
- 47:01I'm just kind of enjoying
- 47:02doing this right now and
- 47:03seeing where that goes.
- 47:08Might start making some other videos.
- 47:09I don't know.
- 47:10Right now,
- 47:12my goal is just continuing to do
- 47:14the dense updates and kind
- 47:15of grow that part of it and
- 47:17then see what happens from
- 47:18there for sure.
- 47:22if people want to sign up and, and,
- 47:25and follow you on Instagram,
- 47:27they can do that by going
- 47:28to at dense underscore updates.
- 47:32That's me.
- 47:33And hit that follow button
- 47:35so that you get all the
- 47:36updates of what's going on.
- 47:38And I do appreciate the fact
- 47:39that you do give a very
- 47:41unbiased opinion about,
- 47:44and you include all the shows.
- 47:47So if you don't know what to
- 47:49tune into next,
- 47:51go to dense updates and listen.
- 47:54And Jenny will tell you
- 47:56what's going on in each show.
- 47:57She doesn't tell you which
- 47:58one to go watch.
- 47:59She just says, Hey,
- 48:00this happens on this show and that show.
- 48:04And you can go check all that out.
- 48:05That's right.
- 48:08Anything you want to tell
- 48:08the listeners before we let
- 48:10you go for the day?
- 48:12No.
- 48:13I have one other question.
- 48:14What do you do for a job?
- 48:17So right now I do like
- 48:19bookkeeping and accounting.
- 48:21I was working for,
- 48:23I was working full time for
- 48:24a roofing company here in Houston.
- 48:27And literally the day we
- 48:30came back from the games, he was like,
- 48:33we are shutting down operations.
- 48:34I was like,
- 48:36Ooh, that was kind of a weekend.
- 48:39I really didn't mean that on
- 48:40a Monday morning, but okay.
- 48:42So I've just kind of been
- 48:43helping him close things
- 48:46down and get his books all
- 48:47together and things like that.
- 48:48And been doing some,
- 48:50some contract work on the
- 48:51side at home for right now.
- 48:53And that's kind of what's
- 48:54freed up my time to be able
- 48:55to make a little bit more
- 48:56of these videos.
- 48:57So yeah,
- 49:00I'm probably going to stay on that path.
- 49:01I can't,
- 49:02I can't see myself going back to a
- 49:04traditional,
- 49:06nine to five and working for the man.
- 49:08So.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:12I didn't have to work for the man anymore.
- 49:13I would love to just talk to
- 49:14people like this.
- 49:16Yeah.
- 49:17Right.
- 49:18It'd be nice.
- 49:19But someone's got to keep
- 49:21the lights on in the house.
- 49:22That's very true.
- 49:24And the internet flowing or
- 49:25we couldn't even do this.
- 49:26So that is true.
- 49:27I mean, if I have to all work three jobs,
- 49:29I don't care, but yeah,
- 49:31I'm fortunate enough right now to,
- 49:33To be able to take a little
- 49:34bit of time for myself and
- 49:36just figure out, yeah, what I want to do.
- 49:39I'm forty four and so I'll be forty four.
- 49:43And I've had a lot of just
- 49:45bouncing around careers over the years.
- 49:47And it's like, man,
- 49:48I just want to find one
- 49:49thing that sticks.
- 49:51But trade work is I've worked for a lot.
- 49:53I've worked for a plumbing company.
- 49:55a roofing company, um,
- 49:57and then a custom home builder, just,
- 49:59you know, accounting and all that stuff.
- 50:00And COVID was,
- 50:02was a bad time for everybody.
- 50:03And roofing is wildly
- 50:06competitive here in Houston.
- 50:07So unfortunately that didn't
- 50:08work out either.
- 50:10Yeah.
- 50:11Is what it is.
- 50:12You know,
- 50:13I didn't find the thing I loved
- 50:14in my life, which is doing this at
- 50:20Um,
- 50:21and then I dove in head first and my
- 50:23wife is probably like,
- 50:26I'm glad you found it.
- 50:31Work on balance a little bit,
- 50:33but we're getting there.
- 50:36Well, Jenny, this has been a blast.
- 50:38Um, and, um,
- 50:41I'm going to keep you in my
- 50:43contacts to have you back
- 50:45because I'm sure there are
- 50:46subjects we can talk about that,
- 50:49like we just talked a little PFAA,
- 50:51and I think that could have
- 50:51went on for a good hour.
- 50:53Yeah, awesome.
- 50:54I'd love that.
- 50:55I'd love to be on with Jamie.
- 50:56I love her.
- 50:57I follow her.
- 50:57She's super awesome.
- 50:59Fittest
- 51:03Yeah, I wish she believed that.
- 51:05Everybody around her believes it.
- 51:07I wish she believed it.
- 51:08I feel like that's such a
- 51:11common thing for some Masters athletes.
- 51:14My best friend,
- 51:15she's a little bit older in
- 51:16the fifty to fifty four.
- 51:18And I'm like, girl,
- 51:20you're going to the games next year.
- 51:21And she's like, nah.
- 51:23And I'm like, hmm.
- 51:25Yeah.
- 51:26Yeah.
- 51:26We have to convince them
- 51:27that they are as good as they are.
- 51:30Yeah.
- 51:30What I love about masters is, you know,
- 51:32here comes Jamie off the
- 51:33games and now her son's in
- 51:35his senior year of school.
- 51:36And then that becomes a priority, right?
- 51:38She can't like an elite
- 51:40athlete just gets to keep training.
- 51:42Nope.
- 51:43She's got a,
- 51:44her son's senior year is
- 51:45what's most important.
- 51:46And so that takes the front
- 51:48seat right now.
- 51:49Yeah.
- 51:50Your kids, your family, your jobs,
- 51:51all those things.
- 51:53A lot of those athletes
- 51:54don't have sponsors and all that stuff.
- 51:58So yeah, definitely harder on them.
- 51:59And speaking of Masters
- 52:00athletes to cross promote,
- 52:01in about eight minutes,
- 52:04the episode three of Behind
- 52:05the Scenes at the Masters
- 52:06CrossFit Games comes out.
- 52:07Oh, yeah.
- 52:07I've got my notification on.
- 52:09I'll be watching that.
- 52:10So you check into that.
- 52:13It's twenty five minutes today.
- 52:15So not too long.
- 52:16Pretty digestible.
- 52:18And I hope you enjoy that.
- 52:20With that, Jenny,
- 52:20thank you so much for doing this.
- 52:21Yes.
- 52:22Thank you so much.
- 52:22I appreciate it.
- 52:23Have a great rest of your day.
- 52:25Yes, sir.
- 52:25You too.
- 52:26We'll see everybody next time.
- 52:27Bye, guys.
- 52:28Bye.
