- 0:02- Hello, I'm Olivia.
- 0:09- And I'm Shauna.
- 0:10- And this is your PCJ Pop for the week.
- 0:14We're gonna throw it back to a time, a simpler time.
- 0:19We're going back to 1998.
- 0:21- Oh, The Truman Show.
- 0:22- The Truman Show.
- 0:23- The--
- 0:24- I love this movie.
- 0:26(laughing)
- 0:27- Okay.
- 0:28- Yes, I think Koli.
- 0:29- I know that it is from 1998.
- 0:32- Kind of the really early creation of reality TV, right?
- 0:37- Right.
- 0:38- If you've never seen the Truman Show, it is,
- 0:40I mean, I have a more favorite Jim Carrey movie,
- 0:44which is "A Turn'al Suncheon" and "A Spotless Mind."
- 0:47- Okay, that's right.
- 0:48Mine’s “Liar, Liar."
- 0:49- Both of those are all good, babies.
- 0:50(laughing)
- 0:53- So it is, I would say this is probably like the early,
- 0:58one of the first serious movies that Jim Carrey did.
- 1:01- Mm-hmm.
- 1:02- But the Truman Show is about an insurance salesman
- 1:06who begins to suspect that his whole life
- 1:09is actually some sort of reality TV show.
- 1:14And Jim Carrey plays Truman Burbank.
- 1:18We have Laura Lennie in it as his wife.
- 1:22And oh my god, it is just such a deep movie.
- 1:27I don't wanna spoil it if we've never seen it.
- 1:29Again, it's from 1998, but it really does look at
- 1:34how we consume reality television,
- 1:39how we really create these parasocial relationships
- 1:44and how we're ultimately like playing,
- 1:47like these producers play God.
- 1:50It's an incredible--
- 1:51- And it's the people's mental health.
- 1:52- Yeah.
- 1:53- Yeah, yeah, ultimately I think it is such
- 1:56a beautiful movie and really considers so many
- 2:01like deep aspects of like human life.
- 2:04Like is there a sense of fulfillment
- 2:07and if you're living a lie,
- 2:10like how does that ultimately boil down to it?
- 2:14- Yeah, it's funny, but it's not like
- 2:16over the top Jim Carrey funny.
- 2:18It's just kind of like earnest funny, you know?
- 2:21- Yeah, and like I said, it's one of the like first really
- 2:24deep thoughtful movies that Jim Carrey did
- 2:27and I hadn't watched it in a while.
- 2:29I feel like I watch it every like three or four years
- 2:32and ultimately it is just such a beautiful movie.
- 2:36It's incredibly iconic in its symbolism as well.
- 2:41There are just so many different things
- 2:43that get referenced through pop culture
- 2:46and art and things like that.
- 2:48And yeah, I think that, you know, if you've never seen it,
- 2:51it's amazing.
- 2:52If you have seen it, I think it is,
- 2:54even more relevant case study today
- 2:59to the way that we've ever watched.
- 3:01- Yeah, I think craving that movie.
- 3:04It's on like one of my, like my list in my phone
- 3:06of movies I need to rewatch,
- 3:07but I can't find it streaming anywhere.
- 3:10- It's on Netflix, baby.
- 3:12- All right, I know what I'm doing tonight.
- 3:14- Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 3:16And yeah, in this penopticon world that we live in
- 3:20of self surveillance, I think it's absolutely
- 3:23very pertinent to the world that we live in today
- 3:26and the way we consume other people's lives
- 3:28and parasocialty lives.
- 3:29So for this week, for each pop,
- 3:32the Truman show you can stream it on Netflix.
- 3:36And that's it for your PCJ Pop.
