- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:19Speaker 1: and today we're back with another fresh radio focused episode
- 0:24Speaker 1: in which we are hearing from deer hunters all across
- 0:26Speaker 1: the country on current deer activity conditions, behaviors, and the
- 0:30Speaker 1: tactics that are working right now. All right, welcome to
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We're here for a mid November edition of RUT Fresh
- 0:47Speaker 1: Radio in which we are getting updates from across the
- 0:50Speaker 1: country on deer activity, conditions, behavior, what's happening right now?
- 0:56Speaker 1: And Spencer, what's happening right now is that you killed buck. Congratulations,
- 1:01Speaker 1: my friend, thank you, thank you. Um and I can
- 1:05Speaker 1: already tell there's a little bit more energy in this
- 1:08Speaker 1: intro by you, Mark, because you also killed the buck. Yeah, man,
- 1:12Speaker 1: we both did it. We finally got the job done. UM.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I can't give too many details away because I'm gonna
- 1:21Speaker 1: share the whole story on the next episode of the podcast,
- 1:24Speaker 1: the full episode. But yeah, I killed the buck. I
- 1:28Speaker 1: can tell you. It was on the Back forty. We
- 1:31Speaker 1: had a great rutt hunt out there, so excited to
- 1:35Speaker 1: share that story. And while we're talking back forty, I'll
- 1:39Speaker 1: just plug it right now. The first episode of season
- 1:42Speaker 1: two of The Back forty just dropped over the weekend,
- 1:45Speaker 1: So go over to the Meat Eater YouTube channel check
- 1:48Speaker 1: it out. Uh, we're getting good feedback on so far.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I'm really happy how things have turned out. And um,
- 1:54Speaker 1: this is gonna give you this episode. If you watch it,
- 1:57Speaker 1: we'll give you some great background as to you what
- 2:00Speaker 1: led to some of the success that I just recently had.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So make sure you check that out before listening to
- 2:05Speaker 1: our next episode of the podcast because it will give
- 2:08Speaker 1: you some nice context. So yeah, I want more details
- 2:12Speaker 1: on it though, like um, or episodes every Sunday? Is
- 2:16Speaker 1: that correct? And like when do the episodes with hunting start?
- 2:20Speaker 1: That's a great point. Thank you, Spencer, You're always on
- 2:23Speaker 1: top of it. Um. Yes, the new episodes will be
- 2:26Speaker 1: coming out every Sunday from now on through the next
- 2:30Speaker 1: two months or so a month and a half or so,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I guess. So yeah, this coming Sunday will be another
- 2:35Speaker 1: episode and we're gonna have uh, several episodes of prep.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So we've got an episode that's all about some of
- 2:42Speaker 1: the new habit at work we did this summer. There's
- 2:44Speaker 1: another episode about all the hunting preparations we did and
- 2:47Speaker 1: some of the strategy behind why we're hunting, where we're hunting,
- 2:50Speaker 1: how we're hunting. Uh. And then you're gonna see an
- 2:53Speaker 1: episode with my dad. My dad and I had a
- 2:57Speaker 1: really cool hunt out there, and as we talked about
- 2:59Speaker 1: on a previous episode of the show, he killed his
- 3:02Speaker 1: first deer with arshow equipment, his biggest buck ever. Then
- 3:06Speaker 1: you're gonna see our rut hunt after that, um, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: then one more or two more possibly later in the year.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So lots to look forward to and uh so far
- 3:17Speaker 1: shaped up to be a really a really cool season
- 3:20Speaker 1: Digging Mark already loved episode one and I'm looking forward
- 3:24Speaker 1: to the rest to come. UM, So thanks man. Like,
- 3:27Speaker 1: what details can you share so far about the deer
- 3:30Speaker 1: that you killed on the back forty? Well, how about
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'll just tell you about the dear activity on the
- 3:35Speaker 1: back forty which, um, over the last week while we
- 3:39Speaker 1: were out there hunting, we were dealing with that warm
- 3:41Speaker 1: spell that I'm sure a lot of people across the country.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We're dealing with um. And so as we discussed the
- 3:48Speaker 1: you know, last episode of this episode, last episode of
- 3:52Speaker 1: this show, we talked about how it's probably in a
- 3:55Speaker 1: slow deer movement, but the rut is still happening, right,
- 3:57Speaker 1: They still have to breathe. The show will go al.
- 4:00Speaker 1: It's just maybe not going to be quite as action
- 4:02Speaker 1: packed during the middle of the day. And that's definitely
- 4:04Speaker 1: what we experienced. We saw good activity the first couple
- 4:08Speaker 1: of hours in the morning while it's still relatively cool,
- 4:10Speaker 1: but then it died down dramatically. You know, once you
- 4:13Speaker 1: got to I don't know what time it would be,
- 4:16Speaker 1: would be like eight thirty somewhere around there. It slowed
- 4:20Speaker 1: down quite a bit. And then really we saw very
- 4:23Speaker 1: little evening activity till the last forty five minutes to
- 4:27Speaker 1: half hour. A couple of nights it was the last
- 4:29Speaker 1: ten minutes until we saw deer um. But during those
- 4:33Speaker 1: little moments you would see flurries of chasing and running
- 4:37Speaker 1: activity and all that kind of stuff. And and eventually
- 4:40Speaker 1: I did have a morning where there was there was
- 4:42Speaker 1: a whole bunch of good stuff going on. So that
- 4:45Speaker 1: was last week, now, Yester, No today, a cold front hip.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So um, you know, I'll tell you that over the
- 4:53Speaker 1: past week, the deer activity in Michigan with that cold
- 4:57Speaker 1: front or with that warm front sorry, was probably like
- 5:00Speaker 1: a six. Right, It wasn't that great except for those
- 5:03Speaker 1: flurries in the morning and evening. But now with the
- 5:05Speaker 1: cold front, I think things have really snapped. And uh,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I might maybe I'm jumping the gun here, Spencer, but
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna give you a prediction for the next seven days.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I think we're gonna see really good activity, um eight nine,
- 5:17Speaker 1: that kind of level because you're getting you know, the
- 5:20Speaker 1: great right activity mixed with a great cold front. Um,
- 5:24Speaker 1: it's gonna unleash things at least until gun season or
- 5:28Speaker 1: other things like that hunting pressure change stuff, which in Michigan.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That's something that's happened this weekend. Yeah, you know, I
- 5:36Speaker 1: think too often we think over the rut as like
- 5:39Speaker 1: this lightbulb thing that you turn on and off, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: that's not the case. But damn it, it really feels
- 5:46Speaker 1: like it this year. Um, with the really warm weather
- 5:50Speaker 1: that we had and then the like great cold front
- 5:54Speaker 1: that came through during what is normally like you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: the maybe three or four best day stretch of the
- 6:01Speaker 1: rout to begin with for the midwest. Um, it it
- 6:05Speaker 1: felt like a lightbulb moment this year for just like
- 6:08Speaker 1: turning it on and and deer movement happening across the country. Yes,
- 6:12Speaker 1: so so is that what triggered your success? Well, I
- 6:17Speaker 1: had been hunting for nine or ten days in South Dakota,
- 6:21Speaker 1: UM and I was unsuccessful for the first um every
- 6:26Speaker 1: day except for the last one. And what really triggered
- 6:28Speaker 1: my success was picking up a rifle. Turns out that
- 6:32Speaker 1: makes a big difference. I was bow hunting for the
- 6:35Speaker 1: majority of that trip UM, and then the last two
- 6:38Speaker 1: days when I picked up the rifle, that was when
- 6:40Speaker 1: I ended up killing a deer UM. And I didn't
- 6:43Speaker 1: see a ton of like textbook rutting activity during that
- 6:49Speaker 1: period in South Dakota UM. But what I did see,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and this is ultimately what really matters, is that bucks
- 6:56Speaker 1: became quite visible in early in the day and late
- 7:00Speaker 1: in the day. UM. You know, I didn't like witness
- 7:04Speaker 1: the crazy uh knockdown, drag out fight or breeding a
- 7:09Speaker 1: dough um or anything like that, but bucks had become
- 7:13Speaker 1: highly visible, especially over this last three or four days UM,
- 7:18Speaker 1: when like the weather cooperated a little bit more. And
- 7:22Speaker 1: you know in the in the past, Mark, I did
- 7:24Speaker 1: an article for the media dot com on the best
- 7:26Speaker 1: day of the white tail rot and I asked ten
- 7:28Speaker 1: of the best white tail hunters I know, including yourself, like,
- 7:32Speaker 1: what is your favorite day of the rot um? And
- 7:33Speaker 1: it was seven out of ten of them picked a
- 7:37Speaker 1: date between November seven and November ten. And so when
- 7:40Speaker 1: you you have that is like historically an amazing time
- 7:43Speaker 1: with the great weather. That's why I say like this
- 7:46Speaker 1: felt like that on and off switch this year. Yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 1: so we we had that that passed not for a
- 7:53Speaker 1: lot of people. Some people listen to this might there
- 7:56Speaker 1: the cold from the east coast is hitting like right now,
- 7:58Speaker 1: so they might be just a experiencing that in the
- 8:01Speaker 1: coming hours or days. But what do we have to
- 8:04Speaker 1: look forward to, Spencer, Um, We're coming into a new
- 8:08Speaker 1: phase of the rut. Did anyone that we talked to
- 8:10Speaker 1: as far as guests, um talk about this next phase
- 8:13Speaker 1: that some people like to refer to as the lockdown? Yeah,
- 8:16Speaker 1: a little bit, Um, And who we talked to you
- 8:18Speaker 1: this week, it's key is Keith Robinson from the Hunting
- 8:21Speaker 1: Public you know, Ohio. Michael Hans Sucker from Heartland bow
- 8:25Speaker 1: Hunter in Colorado, Vince Bodiata in Tennessee, and then Dan
- 8:29Speaker 1: Johnson in Iowa from Nine Finger Chronicles. Now, Dan is
- 8:33Speaker 1: the last interview that you'll hear, and I asked him
- 8:36Speaker 1: what his thoughts are on Lockdown and he did a
- 8:39Speaker 1: great job of of summing up my thoughts as well.
- 8:42Speaker 1: But Mark, I'd like to hear you talk about Lockdown
- 8:46Speaker 1: a little bit, or what hunters referred to as lockdown
- 8:49Speaker 1: in sort of the same way that hunters referred to
- 8:51Speaker 1: you know, mid October is the October Lwell, is it
- 8:54Speaker 1: more of a thing that like hunters have invented or
- 8:57Speaker 1: is there some reality behind like this new phase of
- 9:02Speaker 1: it are out that we're entering. Man, there's a little
- 9:04Speaker 1: bit of both. Um. Basically, it's it's a fancy name
- 9:08Speaker 1: for something that that happens to some degree. Right, If
- 9:12Speaker 1: if you look at the number of does being bred
- 9:17Speaker 1: or the numbers of bucks that are locked onto a
- 9:20Speaker 1: dough and breeding her, that looks if you were to
- 9:23Speaker 1: graph that out on a line chart, you would see
- 9:27Speaker 1: the shape suchly of a bell where at some point
- 9:30Speaker 1: in late October or in October, somewhere you'd start seeing
- 9:34Speaker 1: a few deer getting bred, and then as you get
- 9:36Speaker 1: closer and closer to mid November, more and more and
- 9:39Speaker 1: more and more deer being bred, so that that curve
- 9:42Speaker 1: is rising and rising and rising, and then eventually it's
- 9:44Speaker 1: going to peak. And when that number of does being
- 9:48Speaker 1: bred peaks, that means there's there's more active breeding pairs
- 9:53Speaker 1: of deer kind of locked down than any other time
- 9:56Speaker 1: of the year. And and any experience, dear that has
- 10:00Speaker 1: seen this, we'll know what we're talking about when I
- 10:02Speaker 1: say locked down. When a buck is with a dough
- 10:05Speaker 1: and that dough is ready to breed, they don't go
- 10:09Speaker 1: to They typically won't be running around all over the
- 10:11Speaker 1: place doing the crazy stuff. Usually when a buck and
- 10:13Speaker 1: a doll or coupled and they're going to start to
- 10:16Speaker 1: breed or are, they move very little. Oftentimes these bucks
- 10:20Speaker 1: will try to corral the dough into a little patch
- 10:22Speaker 1: of cover and hunker down for a while, or they're
- 10:24Speaker 1: standing in the middle of a field and try to
- 10:27Speaker 1: keep her there. Many times he'll try to keep her
- 10:30Speaker 1: away from other deers, so it will be in some
- 10:32Speaker 1: weird off the wall place. Um. But when you get
- 10:35Speaker 1: to the point in the season where the very most
- 10:37Speaker 1: deer in that kind of state, you're naturally just going
- 10:40Speaker 1: to see a little bit less dear movement because there's
- 10:43Speaker 1: some number of bucks and doughs that are in this
- 10:45Speaker 1: quote unquote lockdown. But I think the important thing to
- 10:50Speaker 1: remember is that while that is a reality that every property,
- 10:54Speaker 1: every part of the country, there will be some point
- 10:56Speaker 1: in the year where there will be more bucks and
- 10:58Speaker 1: does locked down than any other point. Right, We're all
- 11:01Speaker 1: going to reach a peak at some point, and for
- 11:02Speaker 1: most parts of the country, that happens in mid November,
- 11:05Speaker 1: give or take a few days. Um, while that is happening,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you've got to remember that it's not like they're all
- 11:11Speaker 1: on a calendar and that when they see it's November
- 11:14Speaker 1: or November or November six, all the bucks say, okay, guys,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's the lockdown. Let's all go hang out in our
- 11:21Speaker 1: little patch of Russian olive and not leave for the
- 11:23Speaker 1: next two days. No, there's gonna be some bucks that
- 11:26Speaker 1: are locked down, there's gonna be others that are gonna
- 11:28Speaker 1: be looking for does. There's gonna be other doughs running around.
- 11:31Speaker 1: There's still gonna be stuff going on. Um, So you
- 11:34Speaker 1: don't want to let your guard down or get lazy
- 11:37Speaker 1: or give up on it just because somebody says, Oh,
- 11:40Speaker 1: it's the lockdown, it's gonna be slower. Uh No. You
- 11:44Speaker 1: can have days during the middle of November just as
- 11:46Speaker 1: crazy as November seven. Um, you just gotta be out
- 11:51Speaker 1: there because, as you mentioned, Spencer, the rut can be
- 11:54Speaker 1: on and off. It can be a light switch, but
- 11:56Speaker 1: it can also be here and there. You could be
- 11:58Speaker 1: in one place and it's Nanna's and you could be
- 12:01Speaker 1: four yards away and it could be dead. So there's
- 12:04Speaker 1: so many different variables that the day on the calendar.
- 12:08Speaker 1: While it could be indicative of what you might expect
- 12:11Speaker 1: and what you um can predict a little, you still
- 12:15Speaker 1: just never know. I mean it is every day is
- 12:18Speaker 1: full of potential. So my thoughts during the lockdown are
- 12:23Speaker 1: keep at it just as if it was any other
- 12:25Speaker 1: time of the rut, because anything is still possible at
- 12:27Speaker 1: that point. Um. There are certain things you can do.
- 12:31Speaker 1: If you see a locked down dough and buck, Um,
- 12:34Speaker 1: you kind of have a unique opportunity sometimes because those deer.
- 12:38Speaker 1: If you see a bucket a dough there together in
- 12:40Speaker 1: that kind of way and not moving a lot or
- 12:42Speaker 1: that buck is not leaving that dough at all, or
- 12:44Speaker 1: she's standing there and letting him breed. If you see that,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you can make a few assumptions. One assumption you can
- 12:51Speaker 1: make is that they're probably gonna stick to the same
- 12:53Speaker 1: general area for a day or two. Um. I've found
- 12:57Speaker 1: many times I've seen this and and I'll see him
- 12:59Speaker 1: go out one way. In the next morning, I see
- 13:01Speaker 1: him come back the same way or close to it.
- 13:04Speaker 1: So usually a buck will be with a dough for
- 13:06Speaker 1: something like twenty four or forty eight hours, give or take.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So if I see that, I all of a sudden, no, okay,
- 13:11Speaker 1: I need to super focus on this little zone and think,
- 13:14Speaker 1: what's that. What's this couple gonna do. They're gonna maybe
- 13:17Speaker 1: stay in this little off the wall piece of cover,
- 13:19Speaker 1: or if I saw them leave a little patch of
- 13:21Speaker 1: cover and go into a corn field, I'm gonna make
- 13:24Speaker 1: a strong bet that'll be back into that little patch
- 13:26Speaker 1: of cover the next morning. So you can take advantage
- 13:28Speaker 1: of that. Other things we've talked on previous podcasts about
- 13:32Speaker 1: you can get creative if you see a buck betted
- 13:34Speaker 1: with a dough and it's windy and you've got open
- 13:36Speaker 1: terrain and a little bit of cover, you can make
- 13:38Speaker 1: a spot and stock on them because they're probably not
- 13:41Speaker 1: going anywhere. Um. So there's certain things once you start
- 13:44Speaker 1: to learn how dear behavior this time of year, they
- 13:46Speaker 1: give you extra opportunities. Uh So the point being is
- 13:50Speaker 1: that don't look at this is some kind of dead
- 13:53Speaker 1: zone or this dreary part of the season. No, it
- 13:56Speaker 1: can be great. Just know that it's a little bit different. Yeah. Um,
- 14:00Speaker 1: like you described there, it's just largely misunderstood. And mid
- 14:04Speaker 1: November is still a great time to be in the woods. Um.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But if you're listening to this and you still wanted
- 14:10Speaker 1: more information on like what to do in mid November,
- 14:14Speaker 1: you haven't had success yet, but you're gonna be in
- 14:16Speaker 1: the woods this weekend and you know you want to
- 14:19Speaker 1: be more prepared. There's three articles on the mediator dot
- 14:22Speaker 1: com that I would highly suggest reading and they're all
- 14:25Speaker 1: written by Mark Kenyon. One of them is what is
- 14:28Speaker 1: the white Tail Lockdown? That's exactly what it sounds like.
- 14:31Speaker 1: It talks about this misunderstood phase of the rut. Another
- 14:35Speaker 1: one is what I've learned watching Do Your Have Sex Um,
- 14:39Speaker 1: which kind of touches on the scandalous title. Scandalous title,
- 14:44Speaker 1: but informative article. Uh It's it's a great piece and
- 14:47Speaker 1: it talks about what you have observed mark Um watching
- 14:51Speaker 1: deer during this lockdown phase and how hunters can take
- 14:55Speaker 1: advantage of it. And then the third one is one
- 14:57Speaker 1: that you recently published, and that's how to Reap a
- 15:00Speaker 1: White Tailed book, which is a topic that, as you
- 15:03Speaker 1: talk about in the article, can be used when you
- 15:06Speaker 1: witness a buck in a dough lockdown. Together. So those
- 15:09Speaker 1: are three articles I would suggest checking out at the
- 15:12Speaker 1: meat Eatter dot com. Those are some great recommendation, Spencer,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and I'll tell you I forgot to mention it on
- 15:19Speaker 1: the podcast whenever it was that I talked about my
- 15:22Speaker 1: recent hunts chasing tran Um. I actually saw him, ah
- 15:27Speaker 1: when it was a week or two ago. He was
- 15:29Speaker 1: locked on a doll and I tried to stalk in
- 15:32Speaker 1: on them, and while I wasn't able to get quite
- 15:35Speaker 1: close enough, I did actually see him breeding her. Uh
- 15:39Speaker 1: So that's the second time in three years that I've
- 15:41Speaker 1: seen the big mature buck do that. Um. So I
- 15:44Speaker 1: might be able to write an update to that article
- 15:46Speaker 1: part two someday because it keeps unhappening. You're an expert
- 15:50Speaker 1: in the subject matter now, but I think that's enough
- 15:53Speaker 1: for mus Mark. Let's get to this week's interviews. Sounds good,
- 15:56Speaker 1: Thanks Spencer. This week's interviews are is any by trophy Ridge.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Head over to trophy Ridge dot com to check out
- 16:04Speaker 1: there all new fore lineup of top of the line
- 16:08Speaker 1: releases from T handles to risk releases. They have a
- 16:11Speaker 1: premium option for everyone. That's trophy Ridge dot com. Alright,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and joining us on the line first is Keith Robinson
- 16:19Speaker 1: from the Hunting Public in Ohio. Now, Keith in Ohio,
- 16:23Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activity is ben lately?
- 16:25Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, Oh, I'd say,
- 16:29Speaker 1: if you're in the right area, if you're in the
- 16:31Speaker 1: most dear, I would say it was right around a
- 16:34Speaker 1: seven or eight for us, something like that. But we
- 16:36Speaker 1: also ran into spots where if we weren't running into
- 16:39Speaker 1: the maximount of deer, it was like a zero in
- 16:42Speaker 1: some places. So I mean, if you're finding the right stuff,
- 16:45Speaker 1: it was still seven, eight, even nine in some spots.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I'd say if you were to put a label on
- 16:50Speaker 1: the phase of the rut that Ohio was currently in,
- 16:53Speaker 1: what would you call it. I would say, I still
- 16:55Speaker 1: want to say it's like kind of like a peak
- 16:57Speaker 1: rut type of situation. It's just like, obviously conditions were
- 17:00Speaker 1: so adverse for everyone in the Midwest, But um, I
- 17:04Speaker 1: think the movement was affected for for the dos and
- 17:07Speaker 1: for the cruising bucks in the time and terms of
- 17:10Speaker 1: the time of day and everything. But I would say
- 17:11Speaker 1: that the doughs are still going into their same cycles
- 17:14Speaker 1: and peat on the same on the same time frame,
- 17:17Speaker 1: So I would say it's it's still a peak rut
- 17:19Speaker 1: type of type of rut time span, however you want
- 17:22Speaker 1: to say it. But I would say with some weather change,
- 17:26Speaker 1: it's probably going to spike up a little bit more
- 17:29Speaker 1: within these next seven days going into the later November
- 17:32Speaker 1: time frame. When you're doing some mean seasons scouting on
- 17:35Speaker 1: public land during peak rut, what sorts of things are
- 17:38Speaker 1: you looking for? Stuff we were running into We were
- 17:41Speaker 1: running into a lot of a lot more scrapes than
- 17:43Speaker 1: rubs actually, and we actually struggled to find sign. We
- 17:46Speaker 1: were in a pretty unique area. It was a pretty
- 17:49Speaker 1: low deer density area, which Ohio I think is pretty
- 17:52Speaker 1: well known for having a pretty good deer herd um
- 17:55Speaker 1: but we were in a pretty low dear population area,
- 17:57Speaker 1: so we were struggling to find sign that we were
- 17:59Speaker 1: used to finding in a lot of the areas. But
- 18:02Speaker 1: we pretty much just focused on finding the the hottest
- 18:05Speaker 1: sign that we could find and trying to interpret that
- 18:07Speaker 1: and what that fign meant and where it's coming from,
- 18:10Speaker 1: where the deer going to be close to, and so
- 18:12Speaker 1: we're running into a lot more a lot more scrapes
- 18:15Speaker 1: that seemed like we can train these deer back to
- 18:18Speaker 1: what ridge they're betting on, where the does are betting at,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and try to find those cruising routes of what those
- 18:23Speaker 1: bucks are doing. Pretty much working around singular ridges where
- 18:27Speaker 1: the deer are getting pushed into where the where those
- 18:29Speaker 1: centralized food sources are, which is mostly the red oaks,
- 18:32Speaker 1: scarlet oaks, and black oaks right now, I would say,
- 18:35Speaker 1: when you're looking in a new place on on X
- 18:38Speaker 1: and you're trying to find dough betting to haunt, what
- 18:40Speaker 1: sorts of things are you looking for on that aerial imagery. Uh,
- 18:44Speaker 1: the aerial imagery, I think if you go to the
- 18:46Speaker 1: hybrid view the the oak stick out a bunch, you
- 18:49Speaker 1: can you can kind of see the maple poplar. That
- 18:51Speaker 1: brighter green stuff is a lot of that deadwood. We
- 18:54Speaker 1: call it deadwoods, like the maple poplar stuff where the
- 18:56Speaker 1: deer aren't spending a ton of time. And if you
- 18:59Speaker 1: look for darker like the bigger tree canopy areas where
- 19:02Speaker 1: you find in the darker colored trees, you find a
- 19:05Speaker 1: lot more of the oak stuff. And if it's lower
- 19:07Speaker 1: on the slope, it's going to be more likely it's
- 19:09Speaker 1: going to be red oaks and everything, which is a
- 19:13Speaker 1: lot of this area. At least the red oaks are
- 19:16Speaker 1: still dropping very heavily right now. It's still a huge
- 19:19Speaker 1: food source right now. And then higher on the slope,
- 19:21Speaker 1: if you're still finding those oak canopies, they're probably gonna
- 19:24Speaker 1: be scarlet oak, chestnut oak, black oak, and the scarlet
- 19:29Speaker 1: oak we found is still dropping a lot, and the
- 19:31Speaker 1: deer is still feeding pretty much on any oak stand
- 19:33Speaker 1: you're gonna find, there's gonna be uh those betting within
- 19:37Speaker 1: the area if if there's enough cover, if the pressure
- 19:40Speaker 1: isn't being pushed into there. But there's plenty of food
- 19:42Speaker 1: sources in these big woods areas. It's just a matter
- 19:45Speaker 1: of finding where they're getting pushed into. Because there's going
- 19:49Speaker 1: to be the certain feed trees as biggest, biggest producing
- 19:53Speaker 1: oak trees that you're gonna find. And like I said,
- 19:55Speaker 1: the red oaks seem to be kind of the ones
- 19:57Speaker 1: that the beer focusing on the mostly we saw. We
- 20:00Speaker 1: watched deer walking into these huge red oaks and you
- 20:03Speaker 1: could tell it could be kind of a centralized feed tree.
- 20:05Speaker 1: So it's just a matter of focusing on the best
- 20:09Speaker 1: freshest feeding sign that you can find that is far
- 20:12Speaker 1: away from whatever pressure you're receiving in that area. You
- 20:16Speaker 1: and your brother and everyone else from the hunting pole
- 20:18Speaker 1: looked as a lot of bow hunting from the ground.
- 20:20Speaker 1: What do those setups look like in mid November? So
- 20:24Speaker 1: this last week was obviously, as everyone knows, it's very
- 20:28Speaker 1: hot and uh, pretty pretty weird time to be hunting
- 20:31Speaker 1: on the ground because not so much because of the heat,
- 20:33Speaker 1: but just because of how dry, how dry and still.
- 20:36Speaker 1: It was. The November first hunt my brother Ben and
- 20:40Speaker 1: I had was the perfect ground hunting. Ground hunting day.
- 20:44Speaker 1: It was like winds and it was so easy. You
- 20:47Speaker 1: can get away with moving and everything. You can make setups.
- 20:50Speaker 1: You can still hunt through the woods and everything. You
- 20:52Speaker 1: can move around, you can talk and pretty much everything
- 20:55Speaker 1: the deer, I'm gonna know that you're even around. But
- 20:57Speaker 1: as soon as like two days after that, we had
- 21:00Speaker 1: seven days stretch of like seventy five degrees and two
- 21:04Speaker 1: mile light variable winds, and you take one step in
- 21:08Speaker 1: the woods and you have all those that those fresh
- 21:10Speaker 1: leaves that had just fallen. You're crunching through the woods,
- 21:12Speaker 1: and deer can hear you from four or yards away
- 21:14Speaker 1: in the right scenarios. So it's uh. When Zack and
- 21:19Speaker 1: I were hunting last week, we were pretty much trying
- 21:21Speaker 1: to find buck intersecting trails where they're cruising, cruising along,
- 21:27Speaker 1: just checking dough trails running back up into the big
- 21:31Speaker 1: oak benches on the on those centralized ridges around water,
- 21:35Speaker 1: and we pretty much just tried to set up on
- 21:36Speaker 1: buck cruising areas and tried not to move around too
- 21:39Speaker 1: much and that hot, dry stuff, because it's really hard
- 21:42Speaker 1: to not be spooking deer. But we just have some
- 21:44Speaker 1: success doing that, sitting those shadows, pinch points, those like
- 21:49Speaker 1: classic ruts, set up areas and tried not moving around
- 21:54Speaker 1: too much and tried doing just like calling sequences and
- 21:57Speaker 1: sitting for a longer amount of time, which is it's
- 22:00Speaker 1: tougher to do for us because it's harder to sit
- 22:02Speaker 1: still for us, But I think making those setups is
- 22:07Speaker 1: much more efficient when you're dealing with stuff that we're
- 22:10Speaker 1: dealing with out there. It was pretty tough for us
- 22:12Speaker 1: to do, but we did have some success doing it
- 22:15Speaker 1: going forward. Then in the sinks week or so, what
- 22:17Speaker 1: do you think that bucket TVT is going to be
- 22:19Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Ohio? I
- 22:22Speaker 1: would anticipate pretty high, Like I would say nine or ten.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I would think this next seven days is probably gonna
- 22:29Speaker 1: be some of the hottest stuff in my opinion, just
- 22:31Speaker 1: because we have we've had that hot weather leading up
- 22:34Speaker 1: to this, that hot still consistent weather, and now right
- 22:37Speaker 1: now there's that cold friends coming in. It's raining all day,
- 22:39Speaker 1: and this next seven days looks like it's going to
- 22:42Speaker 1: be some pretty awesome stuff. So I'm really looking forward
- 22:44Speaker 1: to seeing if I'm right about that. But I would
- 22:47Speaker 1: say right around and nine if I had to guess. Alright,
- 22:50Speaker 1: Keith would like your optimism. Good luck to even the
- 22:52Speaker 1: guys from the hunting public. Thanks for joining me, Thank
- 22:55Speaker 1: you very much, you too, alright, and joining us online.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Next is Mike on Sucker from Heartland bow hunter in Colorado. Now,
- 23:03Speaker 1: Mike in Colorado, what would you say the buck activity
- 23:05Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten, Oh, man,
- 23:09Speaker 1: I probably had to say it's been probably uh seven,
- 23:13Speaker 1: six or seven. Yeah, I mean, um, you know, the
- 23:17Speaker 1: rest dranking up and and the deer are definitely seeking,
- 23:19Speaker 1: but it's been it's been kind of knocked back by
- 23:22Speaker 1: some warmer weather, um lately and uh, you know, so
- 23:26Speaker 1: the fortunately it cools off in the evenings of the morning.
- 23:30Speaker 1: You know, overnights of the mornings have been a little
- 23:32Speaker 1: more productive, but the evenings have been kind of basically
- 23:36Speaker 1: the last you know, thirty minutes utes an hour movement.
- 23:40Speaker 1: You tagged an awesome buck this last weekend. Tell us
- 23:43Speaker 1: about that set up and about that hunt. So, yeah,
- 23:46Speaker 1: it was. It was a pretty pretty awesome hunt. We're hunting, um,
- 23:49Speaker 1: you know, basically river bottom ground, so nothing but cotton
- 23:52Speaker 1: woods and that's about it. And so we actually had
- 23:56Speaker 1: set up on a fence gap um, on the edge
- 23:59Speaker 1: of a ag pivot and a bunch of cover to
- 24:03Speaker 1: our to our south, food to our north, and um,
- 24:08Speaker 1: you know, it's one of those deals we had been
- 24:09Speaker 1: running cameras all along the levee to the river and
- 24:14Speaker 1: just kind of monitoring movement, trying to see what areas
- 24:17Speaker 1: bucks were using the most. Obviously it's the rout, so
- 24:20Speaker 1: they're not crazy patternable, but um, we got got a
- 24:23Speaker 1: big buck on trail camera the night before, so we
- 24:26Speaker 1: decided to hang a set and hunt that fence gap.
- 24:28Speaker 1: And wouldn't you know it, Uh, the sun started to
- 24:32Speaker 1: go down. I looked over my shoulder back behind me,
- 24:34Speaker 1: kind of not where I was expecting the deer to
- 24:36Speaker 1: come from, and I saw a doe. She's running across
- 24:39Speaker 1: the field and I was like, okay, we've seen this before. Uh,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know, just lait and waiting and all of a sudden, boom,
- 24:44Speaker 1: Mary pops out and just worked out perfect. He was
- 24:47Speaker 1: on the one side of the fence, she was on
- 24:48Speaker 1: the other, and we were on the fence gap. So
- 24:51Speaker 1: he came literally right right into our laps at like
- 24:53Speaker 1: ten yards and uh, I was able to make a
- 24:56Speaker 1: make a perfect shot and watch him crash and he
- 24:58Speaker 1: didn't go probably fifty six yards. I know you're a
- 25:01Speaker 1: big fan of decoy during pre rut and peak. Rutt
- 25:05Speaker 1: tell us about those setups and how you use a
- 25:07Speaker 1: decoy in mid November. Absolutely, Yeah. I get's been getting
- 25:11Speaker 1: a ton of questions lately about decoys specifically, And yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I mean, if the ruts going in any sort of capacity,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I think it's a a good viable option. And UM.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I actually was utilizing the decoy quite a bit in Colorado. UM,
- 25:26Speaker 1: just because it's open terrain, and that's one of my
- 25:29Speaker 1: favorite places to use a decoys where you know, the
- 25:32Speaker 1: odds of a buck seeing is high. So I don't
- 25:35Speaker 1: like to use them in tight, tight, thick, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 1: high cover, tense areas. UM. I use them in open areas,
- 25:41Speaker 1: typically in areas where you can blind call without deer,
- 25:45Speaker 1: you know, sneaking in, getting behind you, winning you easily.
- 25:48Speaker 1: In mid November, What is your ideal rut set up
- 25:51Speaker 1: like when you go and hit the woods tonight in Missouri?
- 25:55Speaker 1: What is that going to look like for you tonight?
- 25:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna be sitting over a food source. Um that
- 26:02Speaker 1: it's it's a green food plot. Um, surrounded by a good,
- 26:04Speaker 1: good cover, really secluded plot. Um. There's betting not not
- 26:08Speaker 1: too far. The deer aren't really utilizing the plot that much.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I mean those if they go there they're getting harassed
- 26:14Speaker 1: by bucks. But it's one of those areas that if
- 26:16Speaker 1: a buck doesn't already have a dough, um, that he
- 26:19Speaker 1: might be you know, checking and frequenting just to see
- 26:21Speaker 1: if you can pick one up. Have you noticed an
- 26:24Speaker 1: increase or decrease in signmaking over the last week? You know,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I haven't um noticed specifically, but I can imagine, um,
- 26:33Speaker 1: you know, as the rug gets you know, towards the peak,
- 26:35Speaker 1: they're you know, they're not going to be just frequenting
- 26:38Speaker 1: those scrapes as much. I wouldn't think, um, as they
- 26:41Speaker 1: get you know, most of them get with those are
- 26:44Speaker 1: kind of isolated and pull trying to pull those away
- 26:46Speaker 1: from the highly concentrated areas. But um, but I haven't
- 26:50Speaker 1: specifically noticed noticing things. But I just know typically the
- 26:52Speaker 1: time of your scrape activities start to be on the
- 26:55Speaker 1: decline as gun seasons start opening across the Midwest. What
- 26:59Speaker 1: is a strategy when you're still bow hunting during a
- 27:02Speaker 1: gun season, Like, what sorts of setups are you doing?
- 27:05Speaker 1: How is it different that when there's not that gone pressure. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 1: dear definitely seek uh seek, you know for shelter. Once
- 27:13Speaker 1: the Orange Army gets out into the woods and so, um,
- 27:16Speaker 1: you may find better success sticking tighter to bedding areas,
- 27:20Speaker 1: tighter to cover areas. They're not going to be you know, comfortable,
- 27:25Speaker 1: you know, running through wide open fields and chasing deer.
- 27:28Speaker 1: You know, obviously it's still the rud so they'll still
- 27:30Speaker 1: do they'll still be crazy things, but um, yeah, you
- 27:33Speaker 1: may have to be get a little tighter to cover
- 27:35Speaker 1: and getting some of those spots that maybe you know
- 27:38Speaker 1: better for those all day type sits going forward. Then
- 27:41Speaker 1: in the six week or so, what do you think
- 27:43Speaker 1: that bucket TV is going to be on a scale
- 27:45Speaker 1: of one to ten in Colorado? Man, uh, in Colorado
- 27:49Speaker 1: and pretty much anywhere across the Midwest. I think this
- 27:52Speaker 1: whole cold fronts come through and boom, just flip the switch.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I mean, obviously the weather, the warmer rather anything going
- 28:00Speaker 1: to stop the rut from happening. But when the re
- 28:02Speaker 1: the weather is right and it's time with the peak
- 28:04Speaker 1: of the rats, it's hard to beat. So we're already
- 28:07Speaker 1: seeing that through you know, cell cams and and whatnot
- 28:10Speaker 1: here Missouri. Just see the activity instantly picked up the
- 28:13Speaker 1: yesterday as the temperature dropping. The cold front came through,
- 28:16Speaker 1: So it pushed through Colorado the day before, and uh,
- 28:19Speaker 1: my buddies out there are seeing great buck activity as well.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And um, actually almost got another one killed yesterday, So
- 28:26Speaker 1: it's a good thing, a better time to get out there,
- 28:29Speaker 1: all right, Mike, Well, congrats again on the great deer,
- 28:31Speaker 1: good luck with the rest of your season, and thanks
- 28:33Speaker 1: for joining me. Thank you alright and joining us online.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Next is Vince Bodiana from Tennessee. Now, Vince in Tennessee,
- 28:41Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activity is ben lately?
- 28:43Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten? Uh lately, I
- 28:46Speaker 1: would say the activity is probably right around of six,
- 28:50Speaker 1: maybe a six and a half, depending on where you are. Um,
- 28:54Speaker 1: I've started to see a lot of mature buck start
- 28:57Speaker 1: to pop up in daylight, Um, somewhere around the time
- 29:00Speaker 1: between you know, anywhere from twelve to five. So I'd
- 29:03Speaker 1: probably give about a six six and a half for
- 29:06Speaker 1: the timing of Tennessee's rott. Do you think it's closer
- 29:09Speaker 1: to states above you, like Ohio and Kentucky or state
- 29:12Speaker 1: south of you, like Alabama and Georgia. I would say
- 29:16Speaker 1: it's probably more for the states below me. I actually
- 29:19Speaker 1: just had a conversation with another gentleman about that, and
- 29:22Speaker 1: what what we've noticed is run in that last week
- 29:26Speaker 1: in November into the first week of December is usually
- 29:29Speaker 1: when I've typically seen the most running activity here in Tennessee.
- 29:35Speaker 1: What are you seeing for signmaking right now? The biggest
- 29:38Speaker 1: thing right now that I've started to see is a
- 29:41Speaker 1: lot of scrape making, um, and then routine checking. I
- 29:45Speaker 1: feel like, um, you know, I have a lot of
- 29:48Speaker 1: my cameras on scrapes currently, and I just feel like
- 29:52Speaker 1: they're hitting them NonStop and routinely checking them daily. Um.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Like I said earlier, you know, I have getting a
- 29:59Speaker 1: lot of daylight at two, Um, starting to see some
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know, you see some still good rubs and stuff.
- 30:03Speaker 1: But whatever reason, they're they're hitting the scrapes hard. So
- 30:07Speaker 1: what phase of the rut would you say that most
- 30:09Speaker 1: of the the Tennessee is in right now? I would say
- 30:12Speaker 1: it's probably it's it's getting close to the rut. I
- 30:17Speaker 1: would say we're still probably in the pre rut phase. Um.
- 30:21Speaker 1: But like I said once, that last week in November
- 30:23Speaker 1: hits it's gonna it's gonna crank up pretty hot. Do
- 30:27Speaker 1: you do any calling or decoing in Tennessee. I don't
- 30:30Speaker 1: do any d coining. I do do some calling, um,
- 30:34Speaker 1: not so much on the rattling side um, you know,
- 30:37Speaker 1: and it's nothing like the like how you would be
- 30:39Speaker 1: out Midwest or Iowa or anything like that. I try
- 30:43Speaker 1: to stay more towards the light side of calling a
- 30:45Speaker 1: little bit um. I've just seen the word if you
- 30:48Speaker 1: try to get on too aggressive, they just I don't know,
- 30:53Speaker 1: it just seems like they're just they're not they don't
- 30:55Speaker 1: want to partake in the game. And if you kind
- 30:56Speaker 1: of just do it a little lightly, they're they're more
- 30:59Speaker 1: a little more interested. As we approach peak RUTT in Tennessee,
- 31:04Speaker 1: what's your ideal rutt set up? Ideal rut set up,
- 31:08Speaker 1: I'm probably going to set up mostly on the fringe
- 31:13Speaker 1: of doe betting areas, um. And that's really the strategy
- 31:18Speaker 1: is just if I feel like if I'm on the
- 31:21Speaker 1: outside of doe betting areas, there's going to be a
- 31:23Speaker 1: concentration of the majority of of deer. If there's a
- 31:27Speaker 1: lot of dose there, the bucks are going to be there.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Now where they're going to be, you know, that's always
- 31:32Speaker 1: a game during that time, But I feel like that's
- 31:34Speaker 1: probably going to be the strategy that I'm gonna go with.
- 31:37Speaker 1: What should hunters in Tennessee be focused on as far
- 31:40Speaker 1: as food sources. Food sources, I would probably say if
- 31:46Speaker 1: if you have something that that has a lot of acorns,
- 31:49Speaker 1: you know, go go hit with the acorns. If you
- 31:51Speaker 1: have any left standing corn, you know, anything like that. Um.
- 31:55Speaker 1: And then as soon as we start approaching into you know,
- 31:57Speaker 1: later in the year, into December, you know, the green
- 32:00Speaker 1: stuff going forward. Then in the next week or so,
- 32:04Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 32:05Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Tennessee.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna go ahead and give it a seven a
- 32:10Speaker 1: half to eight. And that's only because we've had that
- 32:14Speaker 1: little bit of a warm spell, and I think a
- 32:15Speaker 1: lot of people have. But going into this next week,
- 32:18Speaker 1: it's not going to drop a lot, but it is
- 32:20Speaker 1: going to be a little bit of a cooler spell.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Uh I. Just for the time of year, in the phase,
- 32:26Speaker 1: I think that's that's probably gonna kick it off. So alright, Vince,
- 32:30Speaker 1: good luck with the rest of your season, and thanks
- 32:32Speaker 1: for joining me, al buddy, thank you, Spencer. Alright, and
- 32:35Speaker 1: joining us on the line next is Dan Johnson from
- 32:38Speaker 1: nine fingers chronicles in Iowa. Now, Dan in Iowa, what
- 32:42Speaker 1: would you say the buck activity is ben lately on
- 32:44Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten. Well, for me, Um,
- 32:49Speaker 1: I tagged out before this cold front hit, So before
- 32:53Speaker 1: this cold front UM hit, I would say that the act,
- 32:57Speaker 1: the buck movement, the activities during that warm weather period
- 33:01Speaker 1: was really close to like a six. I mean, there
- 33:04Speaker 1: was a lot of young deer on their feet, they
- 33:07Speaker 1: were moving around, they were checking scrapes, and even some
- 33:10Speaker 1: big dogs coming off of their first dough. We're on
- 33:14Speaker 1: the move, But most of the movement was still in
- 33:17Speaker 1: that morning and evening time frame. Now, but the reports
- 33:22Speaker 1: that I've gotten today so far, after this cold front
- 33:25Speaker 1: has come through, that's changed that the deer are moving
- 33:30Speaker 1: there on their feet. My cell cams are blowing up,
- 33:33Speaker 1: and it looks like that really triggered a little bit
- 33:36Speaker 1: more more movement. So I would say probably closer to
- 33:39Speaker 1: that eight. That's a slammerbuck you killed in Iowa. Tell
- 33:43Speaker 1: us about that set up and about that hunt. Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 1: So you know, my grandpa always used to say, even
- 33:51Speaker 1: the sun shines on a dog's ass, meaning you know
- 33:54Speaker 1: it's okay. Everybody gets lucky once in a while, and
- 33:58Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you, I got lucky. I parked
- 34:00Speaker 1: my truck next to a pond, and next to this
- 34:04Speaker 1: pond was a big block of really thick timber. And
- 34:07Speaker 1: I was on the ground walking to where I was
- 34:09Speaker 1: going to hang my tree stand that night, and I
- 34:13Speaker 1: noticed some antlers coming up and uh, I shot him
- 34:17Speaker 1: from the ground at twenty five yards walking to where
- 34:22Speaker 1: I was gonna go. But where I was going to
- 34:25Speaker 1: go was this little transition area that's really thick and
- 34:30Speaker 1: typically holds a lot of doughs before they you know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: they kind of bed there, but they also staged there
- 34:36Speaker 1: before they head out to the big egg fields, So
- 34:39Speaker 1: it was it was just kind of downwind of a
- 34:43Speaker 1: good staging or betting area. You said, your cell cams
- 34:46Speaker 1: have been blowing up today. If you were to hit
- 34:48Speaker 1: the woods today November eleven, what would your ideal set
- 34:52Speaker 1: up be. I'm going to where the does are, man.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I'm going as tight to bedding with the best possible
- 34:58Speaker 1: access as I can. Like I said, Man, this cold
- 35:02Speaker 1: front just came through Iowa and it's one of those
- 35:04Speaker 1: blue bird days out and it's cold. Now the deer
- 35:07Speaker 1: are going to be moving uh, and so you find
- 35:10Speaker 1: the dough groups and that's where you find the bucks
- 35:13Speaker 1: and maybe even even some of us really unorthodox spots
- 35:17Speaker 1: where maybe a big buck maybe I was pushed the
- 35:21Speaker 1: dough that they're trying to breed and uh or looking
- 35:24Speaker 1: for some of these spots where some of these bucks
- 35:27Speaker 1: have just came off one of their first possibly second
- 35:31Speaker 1: dough and they're looking for that next one to breed.
- 35:35Speaker 1: So I'm getting as close to betting as possible. What
- 35:38Speaker 1: have you seen for signmaking in the last week or so? Yeah, man,
- 35:42Speaker 1: that's a real good question, because the sign activity from
- 35:46Speaker 1: this this early, this first couple of days of October
- 35:51Speaker 1: and the last couple of days or the first first
- 35:54Speaker 1: couple of days in November, last couple of days of
- 35:57Speaker 1: October when the scraping really starts to increase. My my
- 36:03Speaker 1: scrapes have really kind of dried up, not necessarily all
- 36:08Speaker 1: the way, but they're still you know, once a deer
- 36:12Speaker 1: is passing by, he's not going out of his way
- 36:14Speaker 1: to lay sign anymore unless he's right there. So I'm
- 36:18Speaker 1: finding the active sign near the betting areas. We're coming
- 36:23Speaker 1: into a phase of the rut that a lot of
- 36:24Speaker 1: the hunters identify as lockdown. Do you put any stock
- 36:28Speaker 1: into the lockdown phases? That's something that you care about
- 36:31Speaker 1: when you're getting into the woods in mid November. Yeah, dude,
- 36:35Speaker 1: it's the rut. I mean this, this lockdown phase is
- 36:39Speaker 1: almost trickery to a hunter's brain. You know, it's like, well,
- 36:42Speaker 1: it's lockdown, so I better stay out. It's ridiculous, just
- 36:45Speaker 1: like the October lowell the deer or they're they're doing
- 36:49Speaker 1: something and you need to get into your best stance.
- 36:52Speaker 1: You need to have your access still needs to be great.
- 36:56Speaker 1: You need to follow the wind direction, and you need
- 36:58Speaker 1: to get into the pinch points, into those travel corridors,
- 37:02Speaker 1: into those staging areas, into those betting areas, and hunt right.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Lockdown is only good if you're hunting one specific buck,
- 37:11Speaker 1: because there's a whole bunch of other bucks out there
- 37:14Speaker 1: that are aren't breeding and they are looking for deer.
- 37:18Speaker 1: So don't worry about any type of lockdown faith As
- 37:22Speaker 1: we approach peak rut. Do you care about food sources
- 37:25Speaker 1: at all on the state like Iowa? I mean, there's
- 37:28Speaker 1: food all over, so it's never really a concern. I mean,
- 37:33Speaker 1: it's never really a big point of interest unless I'm
- 37:36Speaker 1: doing some October one tip hunting. So the only time
- 37:40Speaker 1: I really focus on food is early season, in late
- 37:43Speaker 1: season right now, again, just like broken record man, get
- 37:46Speaker 1: into the betting areas, get into the travel corridors, those
- 37:51Speaker 1: terrain features that hold deer, because do you're going to
- 37:54Speaker 1: come through them at some point in the day, find
- 37:57Speaker 1: the does, find what they're doing. Set up almost like
- 38:00Speaker 1: you're hunting does, and you're gonna you're gonna find the
- 38:02Speaker 1: box man going forward. Then in this next week or so,
- 38:05Speaker 1: what do you think that BUCKETTT is going to be
- 38:07Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Iowa? So
- 38:10Speaker 1: based off historical data from trail cameras and from my experience,
- 38:16Speaker 1: it's gonna slow down. But because you know a majority
- 38:21Speaker 1: of the does by the end of next week are
- 38:23Speaker 1: going to start, you know, they're gonna be bread. But
- 38:26Speaker 1: the big dogs, the mature bucks, the you know in Iowa,
- 38:31Speaker 1: the four or five, six, seven year olds, they're gonna
- 38:33Speaker 1: be on their feet. And there's this time frame when
- 38:37Speaker 1: there's still maybe a handful of doughs that are are
- 38:40Speaker 1: coming into heat where the biggest mature bucks are gonna
- 38:45Speaker 1: be zombies and they're gonna be walking all over the
- 38:48Speaker 1: place looking for that last dough before they stop running
- 38:52Speaker 1: all together. The activity level between one and ten is
- 38:57Speaker 1: probably gonna go down to a five, but you're gonna
- 39:01Speaker 1: have your best chance of connecting on a big mature cruiser.
- 39:06Speaker 1: All right, Dan, great intel, Congrats again on the buck,
- 39:09Speaker 1: and thanks for joining me, absolutely man, And that concludes
- 39:13Speaker 1: this week's episode of rout Fresh Radio. Thanks to Keith,
- 39:17Speaker 1: Michael Vince and Dan for joining me, and thank you
- 39:20Speaker 1: guys for listening. As you heard Dan say in our
- 39:23Speaker 1: last call there, don't put too much stock into the
- 39:27Speaker 1: lockdown phase. Um, mid November is still an amazing time
- 39:32Speaker 1: to be in the woods, so I hope you get
- 39:34Speaker 1: a chance to get out and take advantage of it
- 39:36Speaker 1: and some rot magic comes your way. For more awesome
