- 6:00you slept two hours. I haven't been asleep. Man, just lying here?
- 6:04Is something wrong? Likea Do you feel all right? Sure? Sure?
- 6:09Just can't get used to being home. I'll make a snack for you,
- 6:13Billy, Now you can talk to your father. Come here, son,
- 6:16Yuh sit on the bed. Okay, Dad, I'll call you when
- 6:20everything's ready. Uh what do you uh wanna tell me? Billy? Uh?
- 6:27I I don't know, but your mother said, well, do you
- 6:32like me? Well? Of course I like you. Will you play with
- 6:36me? Well, I'm I'm a little tired, son, but I guess
- 6:42it can be arranged. Or do you wanna play soldiers? Space? Soldiers.
- 6:46You're a soldier or nothing else. You don't like m just just play
- 6:53something else that's wrong. All the kids think it's swung my dad's space soldiers.
- 6:57Nobody else in my gang has a dad who's gone to March. I
- 7:00told him when my dad came home and showed me how to play real soot
- 7:03it Yes, sir, don't say yes sir to me. I don't ever
- 7:11wanna hear you say that. Wow, you are frying. Men aren't supposed
- 7:16to cry space for two hundred years. The world hasn't had a war for
- 7:27two hundred years. The human race finally got peace federated world. In the
- 7:31years after two thousand, science flourishes, civilization grows. Then we learn how
- 7:40to travel in outer space, first the Moon for scientific observations, then we
- 7:46go on to other planets. Mars, the one planet we know is capable
- 7:54of sustaining human life, and all the two hundred years of peace gets rotted
- 8:00away because the Earth wants to explore Mars, and the Martians object new worlds
- 8:07to conquer. Where the Columbus is of two thousand plus, and the interplanetary
- 8:13war begins. We have to fight for every canal, every inch on Mars.
- 8:18Well, I don't want any son of mine thinking it's so great.
- 8:22I hate it, hate it. I was gonna play Space Soldiers with Space
- 8:28Soldier? What did I do for you? Full of the romance of Mars
- 8:31or mysteries of the unknown. How can you or anybody on this particular world
- 8:37though, what it's like in that unhuman place called Mars play Space soldier play.
- 8:46I remember the patrol patrol into the red grass, blade, sharpest sword
- 8:52and covered with that sickening oos of the Martian vegetation. We went on patrol
- 9:00of us. I was the patrole leader. Alright, let's stuttle in it.
- 9:11Oh oh, oh kay, at what again? Do you see anything?
- 9:16Just the red grass? Oh wait, about a mile and a half
- 9:18over there are sand belt. Can give me a glasses right, yeah,
- 9:24that's right. Every the grass meets the sand belt. We gotta be careful.
- 9:28Those sand spiders more dangerous than a cobra. One bite and you're dead
- 9:33in half a minute. Men are all wearing shin boots. We better put
- 9:35on our mask and gloves too. Sometimes a spider crawls up the clothing.
- 9:39Okay, masks and gloves protect your gear, protective gear on. Uh,
- 9:46it's too quiet. I've almost got the feeling the Martians are around when it's
- 9:50just quiet. Yeah, I know what you mean. We'll go on.
- 9:52Uh. Leo, you take four men and cover the left, use electric
- 9:56rifle, yes, sir. I Mulroney take four men and cover the right.
- 9:58Torpedo pistol, yes, sir, Ted, and I'll take the other
- 10:01man and move straight on. Ted will use atomic show clips in our guns.
- 10:05We meet opposition and have to blast them. Leos and Maroney's groups can
- 10:09cover us as we move around the area we've radiated. Better keep our belt,
- 10:13Geiger Counter's handy. Okay, let's move this slime from the grass sticks
- 10:24to every time careful because it's a sharp rush. There certainly aren't any Martians
- 10:31on that sand oughter. We'd see him. They're around here at all.
- 10:35They're between us and the sand bot hiding in this red grass. Away amost
- 10:41step on a stothard. I didn't see it. A toothflowers flowers and hard
- 10:46as ivory. It's a carnivorous plant. You walk too close to it,
- 10:52it'll bite your leg and half Mars the nightmare planet. And we'll keep moving
- 10:58and keep your eyes, peels of kile vegetation. An enemy martian setting hot
- 11:07always gets like a moment about the day you know, scrope is moving ahead.
- 11:13Apparently they found nothing dangerous. Judge, Hello, Hello, I am
- 11:18waving. Everything's okay. I'll be too sure. Step over there, handstorm
- 11:24whipping across the sand belt like, come up in seconds, blast by one
- 11:28hundreds of miles an hour, and I abny dot hit who's all over the
- 11:39grass blades like an adium staker lying down in a bed of knife hundred doors,
- 11:45hunt the sand thorns? Lets me up, going down, farm,
- 12:09going down? Wait a few seconds, all right, get up? Seven,
- 12:22eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, twelfth. Two men
- 12:28missing becomes Leo. Two men Davis and Martin. What happened? Are dead?
- 12:35Sir Wind threw a Davis jacket. A sand spider bit him. Wind
- 12:39carried a swarm up into the ground. What about Martin? I don't know
- 12:41what caused it. He's dead, al right, come on, let's take
- 12:43away here. He is, sir, Hein is natural and not blue the
- 12:52way it turns when the sand spider kills you. Let me see, good
- 12:56lord, what's the matter. The Martians Marsians that got enduring the same storm
- 13:00must be around somewhere. Look at his back where I opened the jacket hit
- 13:03by a sonic beam. Right, super sound wave, gadget of ass trings
- 13:09your gusts of jelly emotions a hero right now, warn the men right on.
- 13:16Give me your pocket magnet speaker quick here right, Leo, crawling your
- 13:20belly over to the boys, keep going, okay, let me know when
- 13:22you get there. Meanwhile, I'll talk with the magnet speaker. Yes,
- 13:26sir, the martians will hear me. So here's some lingo they won't understand.
- 13:37Now, yes day we got company routine. You figure happy and remember
- 13:43the animal's Leo. Then here, can't see him. Wait, he's coming
- 13:50on the new way chest talking. Step on your your front. Okay,
- 13:54Leo, how shine of the enemy were shining out? Are covered by the
- 13:58red grass? We passed words shoot first good, that's an electric rifle.
- 14:05Enemy said it the chilly cut when there reads two hundred yards. Let's move
- 14:09in. Give me everything, yes, sir, go on that right.
- 14:11But here I heard her trying to crawl through this grass. Compedo pistols.
- 14:26All on his groups may contact Leo Leo yuh. Whoever reaches one hundred yards.
- 14:33Throw atomic grenade right, and Martians haven't returned any fire yet. They're
- 14:37probably waiting to ley it closer and they'll fan the area with that sonic beam
- 14:41of the ass. She'd loaves at one hundred yards. He's throwing the cookies.
- 14:45Any second, plug your ears check. I should have cleaned him out,
- 14:58and we've gotta be careful. We can't go in to see. We
- 15:01don't have any anti radiation gear. No sound from the Martians, nothing,
- 15:07Leo, leo, any report from you. I think we got absolutely no
- 15:13sign of life. Moved souths a few hundred yards, then east. Probe
- 15:18their position, right, Captain, I'm pretty sure it's all player. Yeah,
- 15:22yeah, probably right. I just feel conservative. Right now I'll be
- 15:26trying to verify the Martians are cleaned out. This heat is stinking grass.
- 15:31What are planning? At least the moon is dead? Why would we set
- 15:35us when we got to the moon. No, we had to go on
- 15:37to this forsaken Listen to the sunny theme. The Martians are attacking us.
- 15:41We had a group of the South were shattering of clowns. We can't help
- 15:48just for the thirst to old man, don't you think I know that what
- 15:52are two of us against the Martian patrol? Try to reach Leo? Leo,
- 15:56Leo, Come in, Leo? Why John get over here? You're
- 16:00staying here. We got to stay here and try to get out later.
- 16:03But Leo, Neil's my brother, my brother. Well, here's Joe mac
- 16:22Darling. I hope you like. But Billy I thought he was in here
- 16:29with you. He went up to play. I don't know. Oh,
- 16:33he has been so looking forward to having his daddy back. All the kids
- 16:37in the neighborhood are waiting to meet you. He's been booting about you for
- 16:41months, ever since we got worried that you were coming home. Yeah,
- 16:45I know, Michael, is something wrong? Did you and Billy have a
- 16:49corner? He's he's a stranger to me, married a stranger. You're wrong,
- 16:57Sorry, he was just a baby when I left. I I can't
- 17:00get used to him. Oh, but you will. You can't help loving
- 17:04him. I can't get to know him until he stops this terrible business of
- 17:07reminding me all the time, reminding me of what I want to forget.
- 17:11But he's proud of you, of what you've done you. I told him
- 17:15what it was really like up there. He ran out of here crying.
- 17:19Michael, what do you want me to do? Throw out my chest and
- 17:22brag about being a hero. Pretend that a planet called Mars that Satan himself
- 17:26with aid of a few million devils must have created. Pretend that Mars is
- 17:30heaven, that fighting a war so far away it takes months to get there
- 17:33is fun for the kiddies. I'm I'm sorry, Marry. Just leave me
- 17:41alone. Michael. This isn't like you. How do you know what I'm
- 17:47like? After all these years, I hardly know myself at this moment,
- 17:52five years away from people, away even from the one world in the universe
- 17:57it contains human beings. Were other men with you all the time? Hundred
- 18:02thousands of them? What do you mean you were alone? You don't understand,
- 18:07Michael's darling. I'm worried about you. A spaceship half a mile long,
- 18:14eleven weeks in flight, confined quarters, the same blank faces of men
- 18:18torn from their planet, catapulted into infinity, a fleck of controlled cosmic dust,
- 18:26and being alone and on Mars. The base dug underground, living in
- 18:33plastic shells for barracks, never being able to move except on patrols. All
- 18:38of us men in a nightmare and being alone in our souls alone. Give
- 18:48me some coffee, all that mighty here you are. Thanks, Michael.
- 19:03You're home now and you're not alone anymore. It's good coffee. But tomorrow,
- 19:12tomorrow, afternoon and evening, that is. Yes, I'm giving a
- 19:17party for you. At first, I was going to have it a surprise
- 19:19for you, but I think you should know I don't want a party.
- 19:25We've all families here and all your old friends. They want to see you,
- 19:30Michael. Everyone's so happy you're home. Call it off. I don't
- 19:33want to see them, and you understand I don't want to see them.
- 19:37They're smug. Hello, they're glad you're back. Chader though, what's it
- 19:42like in another world? And how's mars? Old man questions? They wouldn't
- 19:48understand the answers if I could somehow force myself to talk about it, But
- 19:51it won't be like that. They love you. They're happy to time.
- 19:56Lo Darling. You can't go on likely fighting the Martians and your memories and
- 20:03fighting the human beings who love you. For your sake, Michael, I
- 20:08am not going to call off the party. Everyone is coming, just as
- 20:12I plan and you've got to meet them and see for yourself. You've got
- 20:17to understand for yourself, and you're home again on earth, and that you
- 20:21have a life to live once more. Do you mean that, Mary?
- 20:25I do, Michael, Dolly, I do because I love you. Well,
- 20:33I'm really a stranger in this house, not really the head of it.
- 20:40Still alone, the barracks filled with chintz. Havana. Boy. All
- 20:47right, marry, have your party without the guests, Savanna, Michael,
- 20:56Michael, h It's good to get out of the house. Walk or walk
- 21:17forever, sunshiny, beautiful, peaceful trees, tall trees, green and yellow
- 21:26leaves. No red grass, no red grass anywhere. The birds, the
- 21:36wonderful signs they made five years never saw never, never heard a bird.
- 21:42The only creatures that ever made a sound of There was a Martian controlly,
- 21:48fat, greasy lizards that screamed like tortured souls. Look at us. Flowered
- 21:56blue screens, burd orange, clean, white, sweet, glorious, smell
- 22:07peaceful, so peaceful in which to be alone. The grass. The grass
- 22:15was short, soft, carpet like blades, a carpet of green, cool
- 22:19and gentle. I just sit on the grass. Why on the grass and
- 22:26rest, rest and think, think, think. I remember when Tad and
- 22:37I got back to command post. The Martian sky was darker. Clouds of
- 22:41that ever looked like these clouds. We hadn't spoken to each other for a
- 22:47long while. Now we got away alive from the ambush I'll never know.
- 22:52And now we were coming to the base and the commander that the four report,
- 23:08Captain, Yes, Commander that writes, sir, the fourth success pil
- 23:11ambushed by the Martians in as many days. We're gonna have to do something
- 23:15drastic to stop it. Air observation doesn't help. Endless miles of grants and
- 23:19sand. The Martians are small, hide in the stuff, take on its
- 23:25coloring like chameleons. If I weren't for those sonic beam, those those killing
- 23:29sound ways, they could probably handle them. I know, I know.
- 23:32Can't the Earth Science Council work out offenser as they're trying to. But even
- 23:34if they do, til we get it up here, we'll all be decimated.
- 23:38I'm thinking of an old weapon, poisoned gas. That's an outlawed weapon.
- 23:44Isn't the commanding out lord on Earth? Yes? They were not fighting
- 23:47on Earth, Captain. Uh. Sometimes I wish they'd never invented space ships.
- 23:52Oh, let's not worry about it. Now you may need some wreck.
- 23:56Report to the hospital barracks. Take five days there, yes, sir,
- 23:57Oh one more thing. But the twelve minute the patroller were lost.
- 24:02When was your brother my right? Yes, sir, I'm sorry, Thank
- 24:06you, sir. I got to the barracks and get some rest. We
- 24:08got a lot to do in five days. If I've got on the commander
- 24:18is sorry, I'll get to the barracks. Don't think it's so hard to
- 24:22have No, why shouldn't I It isn't just because Leo was my brother,
- 24:26but because he was someone special up here on this rotten apple called Mars,
- 24:33where all people out of touch with the decent things of our world. A
- 24:37little kid, every man who lives here, lives up here. He's in
- 24:41his own vacuum. Can't believe what's happened to him, finding himself in a
- 24:48place where things that are unreal to the human mind are everyday realities. But
- 24:53I had something, I had, the one thing that made me a human
- 24:59being. Up here. I had I had someone who loved me, whom
- 25:06I loved. And now he's dead, and I've got no one. I
- 25:12like everyone else up here, now I've got no one. Marry, marry
- 25:45marry. Mommy is in here? Where is she? Billy was crying.
- 25:53She went next door to the neighbor. Why'd you make my mommy cry?
- 25:59You're not nice? But I don't like you. I'm I'm sorry, sir.
- 26:04I I guess I haven't been very nice at that. Come here,
- 26:10Billy Son, I've brought back a lot of bitterness from the other side of
- 26:18the universe. But a little while ago, I thought back to what another
- 26:22man told me on Mars, and I realized something that I didn't understand at
- 26:26the time. I'll be all right. From now on, Billy, you
- 26:32and I are gonna be real friends, royal pals. Kim, wech kim,
- 26:34We play soldier. How would you like to play baseball? Or build
- 26:40model jet planes together? Or go on a hike in the woods? See,
- 26:42that'll be swell. I like that you didn't care what you did with
- 26:47your dad, just so you did something with him. I and all you
- 26:51could think I was a soldier because that's what I did, just proved alright,
- 26:56ted was to beat it together and to love someone. That's what makes
- 27:03us human. Being Michael. Hello, Mary, Kenny and I are gonna
- 27:10play bakst on her a Heinke and everything. Oh, Michael, Michael,
- 27:15it's all right now, Darling. It's all right. Your soldiers come home
- 27:30next week. Another exciting and unusual story from the world of Tomorrow over the
