Transcript
- 0:13Hello or welcome or welcome back to that Gen.
- 0:16X Friend podcast. So before I begin, I want to
- 0:22give a shout out to MB Radio for the opportunity to share.
- 0:29You know, maybe sometimes I share too much, I don't know,
- 0:35but thank you. I truly, truly appreciate it and
- 0:40all those who are listening. So today's topic, which is
- 0:45perfect, I think it's this point in our human development.
- 0:53Today's topic is I want to talk about who's really speaking when
- 0:59you're talking or when I'm talking.
- 1:01Is it me? Is it really you?
- 1:05Is it, for instance, like your past, what people said to you in
- 1:09the past? Depending on the day, the
- 1:12situation? Are you really speaking for
- 1:16yourself? It's the voice that's being
- 1:19transmitted through your vocal cords.
- 1:22Is that you? I'm here sharing this because,
- 1:29you know, it's been, for those who have not listened to my
- 1:36previous podcast, I've been on this journey to sort of a
- 1:42transition in life, moving, starting over because honestly,
- 1:50it's, it feels like my whole life has been not me.
- 2:00So I know, right? Wow, that's a that's huge.
- 2:03That's too much. But in a way, it had to start.
- 2:08It had to start with me moving, right?
- 2:12I've lived a life many years now where I had a family, I got
- 2:20divorced, so on and so forth. You know, I got married again,
- 2:24blah, blah, blah. Yay, trauma dumping.
- 2:29No, we're not going to go there. But it always felt like I was
- 2:34some sort of like the movie Avatar, right?
- 2:38Except at least the people who are the Avatars were their own
- 2:44people, right? The people who are controlled
- 2:45it, controlling it had the same emotions as the Avatar.
- 2:52I felt like I was in an avatar controlled by somebody else.
- 2:57You know all those, I guess games, right?
- 3:02You're playing the character. But imagine as if you are in the
- 3:07in the game, but somebody else pulling the strings or
- 3:10controlling however they do it. I guess maybe sort of like The
- 3:14Matrix. I've been on that thing too.
- 3:18Well, memories. What a great movie.
- 3:21So in a way it with all these things that are going on in my
- 3:26life, my mind wanders. And sometimes when I'm speaking
- 3:31to people, even as I'm saying things to people, I find myself
- 3:40shocked. I'm like, what?
- 3:41Did I really just say that? Did I?
- 3:45No, that's craziness, right? You're like, what made me say
- 3:49those things? It doesn't even, it's not even
- 3:52me like a puppet, right? So, yeah.
- 3:58So that's why I came on upon this topic and I've been
- 4:02thinking about it for a while and looking back on some of
- 4:07these podcasts that that I've done, I'm not saying it's not
- 4:12me, but I find myself tripping over my words.
- 4:17You know, there's many factors go that goes into why we trip
- 4:21over our words. But a lot of the times it's not
- 4:24just because I'm tired or I can't think straight.
- 4:26I'm trying to find a word, but it feels like different things
- 4:34like I listed like is it my past speaking for me?
- 4:37Is it because I was in the Marine Corps that this whatever
- 4:44point of a conversation I was having with you or this
- 4:47discussion I was having that portion of me right, Or this
- 4:54conjured up image of what a Marine should be came out and I
- 4:57wanted to be snapping my fingers and doing the, you know, the
- 5:04full metal jacket drill instructor routine, you know,
- 5:07and so in some ways I have to stop myself because it's just
- 5:11more of a stream of consciousness podcast.
- 5:14I'm not. I write down my topics, but I
- 5:18don't have specific fixed points that I'm going to discuss.
- 5:24I let it flow because I think sometimes it's more natural and
- 5:30how it develops. And also it comes out in a way
- 5:35that it makes me think later too, rather than planned out
- 5:39because I can write a paper, but that's seems very contrived in
- 5:46some ways. I'm not saying people who have a
- 5:48script is contrived, but I'm still trying to find my voice,
- 5:53find my voice in this noisy, noisy world.
- 5:57It's not. We live in unprecedented times,
- 6:00right? It's not like our ancestors,
- 6:03they didn't have the radio. Yeah, sure, they had TV.
- 6:06They didn't. They had radios.
- 6:08They had the newspaper. But it was encapsulated.
- 6:11Today, our phones, our phones are with us 24/7.
- 6:18It's always something It it's like we don't put it down.
- 6:25We don't shut off these outside noises on top of what we already
- 6:30have within ourselves like our past speaks for us.
- 6:34For me, I'm going to relate this.
- 6:38Growing up, you know, kids are mean, blah, blah, blah.
- 6:43And they used to say how ugly, how horrible I was, blah, blah,
- 6:47blah. And you can imagine the rest.
- 6:50And sometimes when I'm speaking, especially in different
- 6:55circumstances, that what's coming out of my mouth, what's
- 7:00the words that are coming out of my mouth, right?
- 7:03Is this little insecure girl that wants to be loved and don't
- 7:09want to be told that she's ugly and she's dumb and all these
- 7:13other things, right? So I now more and more, even
- 7:21when I'm expressing these things to you, I'm now growing my
- 7:26awareness. And Ashley, is this me?
- 7:30It is this the current today's me or is this my past?
- 7:36Is this some you know, is this someone influencer?
- 7:40I like? I don't really like hold any
- 7:44influencer to this God like status, but you are influenced.
- 7:49We are all influenced by the things we listen to, that things
- 7:54we watch, the things we read, so on and so forth.
- 7:58So is it possible? Is it possible for us to still
- 8:04be present, to be ourselves when we are speaking?
- 8:09Right. If you notice the title is what?
- 8:12Who is really speaking when you are talking?
- 8:15So yes, speaking and talking are synonyms, but speaking is more
- 8:20of it sounds more formal, but also it is more describing A1
- 8:27way sort of conversation or the conversation is two ways but a
- 8:32one way of speaking. Like there's no other person,
- 8:35I'm speaking, there's nobody else listening, right?
- 8:41So, but talking, you're having a conversation, you're speaking
- 8:44with somebody and they're responding and so forth.
- 8:47So speaking more identifies as this individual act.
- 8:52And we're talking is a sort of communications mode where
- 8:56you're, you're trying to convey something to others.
- 9:00So, but you know, with podcasts, it's, it's a little different.
- 9:03It's, it could be rhetorical, right?
- 9:06Because I'm, I'm speaking into a camera, but I'm talking to you.
- 9:13So see technology, wow. It, it, it mixes the, it blurs
- 9:20the boundaries a lot. So but speaking, that's what I'm
- 9:24saying when I'm talking even to the camera, because I'm
- 9:29imagining this conversation, right?
- 9:30I'm I'm having with you or whatever you're feeling, who's
- 9:34actually speaking today? Today isn't me speaking.
- 9:42But how do I even know who I am? Because I just expressed earlier
- 9:47that I felt like I've lived my whole life prior to this, right?
- 9:54Like a, an avatar that had no control of her own body, The
- 10:00sort of things and the things I did or sort of puppeted.
- 10:08But by whom? Who's actually, you know, I have
- 10:13thoughts in my head. So we can speak vocally and we,
- 10:18we can talk vocally, right, express ourselves.
- 10:21But we have these voices in our head who then take turns into
- 10:27almost unconsciously, some of us are more aware.
- 10:30I'm not one of those people. I'm just learning now.
- 10:34But unconsciously, we have different voices that will come
- 10:40that will express themselves vocally through what we're
- 10:44saying to others during on a daily basis when we're
- 10:48interacting. Like last week's podcast is like
- 10:53we let circumstances, we carry the feelings, the emotional,
- 11:00these frustrations or whatever, we carry them through the next
- 11:06interaction that we have, right? And it compounds or make you can
- 11:09make things worse from zero to 100, right?
- 11:12So in some ways, when we're talking to other people, whoever
- 11:20is speaking, just imagine you're not just carrying the emotions,
- 11:24you're carrying a almost a distinctive sort of character,
- 11:31right? So if, for example, if I was in
- 11:35a, let's say, confrontational circumstance, it doesn't have I
- 11:41don't mean physical, just confrontational.
- 11:43You don't agree with somebody, blah, blah, blah.
- 11:46All of a sudden that Marine in mindset, right?
- 11:54But it's not. Is it me as the Marine or is
- 11:57this some character Marine like, you know, like the drill
- 12:01instructor from a phone, phone on a jacket.
- 12:05I want to do this bit, right? I want to make it so I deliver
- 12:10this knockout, I don't know, speech like he did.
- 12:16It makes you want to crack up. It shocks you and it brings
- 12:22whoever in front of me into submission in that dominating
- 12:26way. But where am I in that 'cause
- 12:33we, so we have been especially most of us who are alive and
- 12:39there, there are people who were alive during a time where media
- 12:43wasn't so intrusive. And we choose this.
- 12:46We chose Big Brother is watching and we chose it.
- 12:49We in the name of convenience guys.
- 12:53So there were a simpler time when our days were not filled
- 12:59with constantly filled with voices from everywhere.
- 13:05Now you got I'm, I'm not saying popular media is anything to
- 13:11venerate like they're awesome. We all have our opinions about
- 13:15those people. But I'm not saying influencers
- 13:18are great either, right? They're just voices now.
- 13:21Technology has multiplied exponentially.
- 13:26The access we give to other people's voices, who knows their
- 13:31where their voices go, who is speaking for them, right?
- 13:35We can see it all over the Internet.
- 13:37You know, this influence, who serves, who speak on dieting or
- 13:42these crazy medications, who's speaking for them or who's
- 13:46speaking through them. It's probably whoever's paying
- 13:49them, right? Do they really believe this?
- 13:52That's what I mean. So when we speak, if we're not
- 13:58conscious of who's actually speaking through us as we're
- 14:05talking to people we're engaging on a daily basis, maybe or not
- 14:11even maybe, but often times who's speaking what, we are
- 14:15talking to ourselves. Because we all know, to be
- 14:19honest, I believe most of us have an internal dialogue where
- 14:26sometimes we argue with ourselves, right?
- 14:30But so who's, who's this other voice that's we're arguing with?
- 14:35It's like a a stupid skit. You know those terrible movies
- 14:41where they make about schizophrenia or yeah, I hear
- 14:46voices. I see dead people, except I hear
- 14:49all kinds of people, right. In that way, it just drives you.
- 14:54It can drive you crazy. Sometimes when I'm talking to
- 14:59myself, I can honestly, now that I've grown more and more aware,
- 15:06when I hear it inside my head, I'm like, that's, that's
- 15:12actually not me. That was said to me by my
- 15:17parents. And then repeat it and repeat it
- 15:19and repeat it into like into existence within my own psyche.
- 15:27Even though it's my voice. Because you're not hearing.
- 15:29I don't know. Do you guys hear other voices
- 15:31like in in other voices, other people's voices speaking in when
- 15:36you have your internal dialogue? Me, it's my voice.
- 15:39It's still this voice speaking, but it is the characteristics of
- 15:47somebody else. So who was really speaking was
- 15:50my parents. It could have been whoever,
- 15:54whoever picked on me or whoever said the nice things about me,
- 15:57like, you know, oh, you, you cook really well.
- 16:01You you really make very good food or something like that.
- 16:05Even when I'm by myself. So it's not, that's in a way
- 16:14that I'm, I'm here, I'm here somewhere because to have that
- 16:20internal dialogue or to be aware of, Oh my God, did did I just
- 16:27really say that stuff like that, you have to be there
- 16:31consciously. Like whether you are a small bit
- 16:35in your mind or you have control of your mind, you're still
- 16:42present. Because to be aware that I don't
- 16:45know, that wasn't really me, you're there or I'm here, right?
- 16:50I'm here. So how do I develop a more
- 16:57authentic voice? Not because I cannot take on the
- 17:03characteristics of my life. I was in Marine Corps, I was in
- 17:10the military, so you know that is me.
- 17:13But I don't when I speak, I want to speak as my my version of the
- 17:21Marine that I was right. Not the full on a jacket drone
- 17:27instructor who strung swear words together in such a
- 17:32expressive manner. Man, that was one of my favorite
- 17:36scenes before I went. I watched that movie so many
- 17:39times before I went to boot camp.
- 17:41Anyways, so I am sharing this because I'm starting to become
- 17:49more more aware or just be more aware of when I'm speaking.
- 17:54Is this me? Am IA even in there?
- 17:59Or is this some caricature of somebody who I either had in my
- 18:04life or want or listen to all of these factors who's impacting
- 18:11what the words that are coming out of my mouth?
- 18:14You know, I I want to express myself in an honest way that you
- 18:24as a listener be like, OK, that's her.
- 18:28She's not some second rate actor trying to be somebody else,
- 18:35right? Why go and bother to be somebody
- 18:39else when you are an original, right?
- 18:46You are the best at who you are. You are the best person to speak
- 18:52your own mind. You are the best person to do
- 18:56whatever it is in your life because you're actually here.
- 19:01You know, when when they there's a saying this, you know, walk
- 19:05them out in somebody else's shoes.
- 19:07Sure, you can walk them out in somebody else's shoes, but would
- 19:10you really know the insurance and outs of it?
- 19:14So I say that in a way to express, even if you think it is
- 19:23actually effective to take on a character like a the
- 19:27characteristics of somebody else's voice, are you doing
- 19:31yourself a favor? Are you actually just being a
- 19:36second rate actor mimicking what you think, what you think
- 19:40somebody else would say? When in all actuality, you can
- 19:44just say it as you as the way you want it.
- 19:50People will connect it with connect with you based on the
- 19:56honesty of how you express yourself.
- 19:58I'm not saying they may like you.
- 20:01Hell, they might hate you, right?
- 20:03But if you're honest, you will find that the same people, the
- 20:11same the people with the same sort of ideas will eventually
- 20:17find you. I'm not saying it's going to be
- 20:19easy or that's why I think there's so many.
- 20:26Influencers or people who are on YouTube or podcasts trying to
- 20:30express their express themselves.
- 20:35I don't know about the authenticity.
- 20:37I don't know if their thoughts are their thoughts or are they
- 20:40just trying to get clicks. Obviously plenty of people are
- 20:42trying to get clicks. Plenty of people are trying to
- 20:45make money. But you know, the, the real, the
- 20:51people who are really expressing themselves honestly in an
- 20:57authentic way, I think most of us can tell, we can feel it.
- 21:01They're not trying to pull our chain.
- 21:02They're not just going into platitudes or whatever,
- 21:06whatever, all the popular sayings just to get something.
- 21:12They're really trying to express themselves.
- 21:14And if in the process they earn money, great, right?
- 21:20That's just one example. But in our daily lives, when we
- 21:27unconsciously just go and say our first, first thing that
- 21:32comes to mind, it doesn't have to be the first thing.
- 21:35Heck, it could be the last thing that comes to mind.
- 21:37And you're just like, what did I really say that I didn't mean
- 21:40that? Well, that just slipped out,
- 21:42right? Some of the examples I gave, so
- 21:45many expressions like those tell the story of how sort of robotic
- 21:54we are. We're just, we're automated.
- 21:56We don't even think anymore. Things just come out.
- 21:58We don't know if we really meant it, Who meant it, Was it?
- 22:02Were we influenced by somebody else's thoughts?
- 22:05Not that even we agreed, but OK, just throw something in there.
- 22:11The point is to be more conscious in the way we talk,
- 22:19right? To to see, maybe catch, like,
- 22:23hmm, I felt that. I felt that it was my mom, it
- 22:27was my dad, it was that it was my old boss or whoever that was
- 22:33speaking through my voice into whatever situation, right?
- 22:40Or it could. It doesn't even have to be
- 22:42people. It can be past experiences like
- 22:47fear for people, you know, when you care about somebody.
- 22:54Sometimes we let our fears, our own personal fears speak for us.
- 23:03For example, like just say, just say you got an accident when you
- 23:09were younger and you man, you are really afraid to get into
- 23:14those accidents. Again, a car accident.
- 23:17And, and there's certain situations like you don't like
- 23:20driving near big tractor trailers or whatever.
- 23:24Because for whatever reason, and anytime you're in a car with
- 23:29somebody else and they're driving and they're fine, they
- 23:32don't have this issue. Anytime you are near a tractor
- 23:36trailer, although you're safe, you trust your friend or
- 23:41whoever's driving you, this fear rushes into you and is speaking
- 23:47for you. You're like, please be careful,
- 23:49OK? I'm really afraid of I'm really
- 23:51afraid of tractor trailers. And in in a sense, the fear
- 23:55that's speaking through you, it's going to impact whoever's
- 23:59driving. You may have just created a
- 24:02situation, right? Because you let your fears speak
- 24:07for you, not you speak for you. You can excuse me allergies,
- 24:15man, they're crazy. You could express yourself in a
- 24:20way that's OK in your own mind. Not everything has to be said
- 24:26guys right that too. Sometimes even if some the fear
- 24:31speaking for you, you who the real you that's seeing this.
- 24:39Wow, that's that's weird. I'm letting what happened years
- 24:42ago speak for me or making me crazy.
- 24:45You can talk to yourself too. Hey, you know, I trust this
- 24:49person. They don't have to drive.
- 24:52So I'm going to tell you to stop.
- 24:55I'm I'm not even going to let you.
- 24:57I'm not even giving you a voice. I'm not going to do this.
- 25:01So more and more as you notice, perhaps it's going to take at
- 25:07first, man, I was so mindless at first.
- 25:11It just felt like I had to apologize or I, I should have
- 25:16apologized. I didn't, but I knew I was
- 25:19wrong, right? So stuff like that, that started
- 25:21me noticing. And then it's just I started
- 25:26feeling like I had this different rush because when I'm
- 25:31speaking for me in my own voice, which is very seldom, it was
- 25:37very seldom. It felt different.
- 25:40It felt natural. It didn't feel forced.
- 25:42It felt like it was proper. Like when your joints fit
- 25:48together, it's not like dislocated.
- 25:51Oh, that that's the way it's supposed to be, right?
- 25:55But I started noticing this feeling more and more when
- 26:01others people's voices, like my parents or whatever, or an old
- 26:05boss or a drill instructor or the fear or trends, social
- 26:11media, what somebody else said. When I'm the voice that I'm
- 26:17giving to whoever speaking is not my own, I will feel this
- 26:23odd, like something's out of sorts.
- 26:27It's not fitting, right? But those things had to be so
- 26:36noticeable for me to actually feel it.
- 26:38Because when we're mindless, it takes something big, right?
- 26:41It's like when you're numb it, it has, it has to hurt a lot
- 26:46more for you to feel it. So when I started to notice
- 26:51those things, it it was usually like maybe during a fight, I
- 26:55said something, man, that wasn't me.
- 26:59But when I started to listen consciously listen to myself
- 27:04more, what's coming at what is coming out of your mouth, what
- 27:09I'm talking, I can overtime I was better.
- 27:16I was able to discern better if that was me, that was somebody
- 27:23else, that was my past. That was a fear and I I don't
- 27:27have control over it. I now can identify at least now
- 27:31I can identify some of this stuff, a lot of it because I had
- 27:35internalized it. It is still, I still believe
- 27:39it's me, but you know, there is an anchor that I want to share.
- 27:46I don't have a solution. So this is just in this
- 27:50transition portion of my life. I've there's so many things that
- 27:54are, I'm learning so many things that are that are coming at me
- 27:58all at once from different aspects of my life.
- 28:01It it's kind of, it's kind of overwhelming sometimes, but I
- 28:06have found one anchor. If you're a Christian, if you
- 28:13listen to the word of God that's in correspondence of the Bible,
- 28:21then you have an anchor of what is true, what is not, what is
- 28:26the world coming in to tell you these things?
- 28:29Because we're not fighting against against flesh and blood,
- 28:33right? It, it, it's our minds are being
- 28:38invaded. And if you anchor yourself using
- 28:43the truth you know to be, it's easier to find a way back or
- 28:53just to start fighting yourself. I'm trying to find my way back
- 28:57to who God meant for me to be and just let go of all these
- 29:04voices, these things that are that are speaking through me as
- 29:09I'm talking to the world in my daily living tasks.
- 29:18So, you know, it's I, I don't know how many people also feel
- 29:28the same way and feel so sort of almost desperate to find our way
- 29:34back to us who, who God created us to be.
- 29:39I'm on that journey, man, this journey that I'm on has taken me
- 29:46to down so many different roads. It's not even funny.
- 29:49But nonetheless, it's it's, it's a journey, but I know there's a
- 29:56destination no matter how many different roads I have to
- 30:01traverse. I am trying to give back to
- 30:09where God meant for me to be. Not lost in this world.
- 30:16A sea of voices that has nothing to do with me and my purpose on
- 30:24Earth if they're just mindlessly coming through because I my mind
- 30:30has been so uncontrolled, weakened, you can say.
- 30:37But it is my responsibility to actually get myself to decide,
- 30:46hey, these, whatever, speaking through me.
- 30:50Most often, it's not me. And I should be more conscious
- 30:56and understand how important words are, especially when
- 31:02we're, especially when we're talking to ourselves.
- 31:06Yes, when we interact with other people, you probably, you're
- 31:09probably more conscious in minding your words, unless
- 31:12you're one of those people who just don't care.
- 31:16Sometimes I'm one of those people when we're afraid to
- 31:21offend somebody else. We watch our mouths right in
- 31:24most situations. But when we speak to ourselves,
- 31:29when we're talking to ourselves, who's speaking and why are they
- 31:33speaking? Is it building you up?
- 31:35Is it true? Is it what God intended for you
- 31:41to hear? Or is it just distracting you
- 31:47and leading you off track so you don't get to find your purpose,
- 31:53find yourself, right? So that's what I wanted to
- 31:57share. I know it's some of these things
- 32:01that I share. I don't have solutions.
- 32:04I just, this is just part of the journey, right?
- 32:06I'm going to share different aspects of this journey and
- 32:12hopefully they will one day come together in some clarifying way
- 32:22for me, for for whoever is experiencing the same issues,
- 32:32maybe it's not an issue, but the same things.
- 32:38So next time when you speak, right, listen to yourself,
- 32:45listen carefully to the words that are coming out of your
- 32:49mouth and see or see who's who. Is it actually you who's
- 32:59speaking? Because it should be you.
- 33:03You're the best person to speak for yourself and not anybody
- 33:07else. Yes, all of your life, all your
- 33:10experiences influence you, but you don't have to be a character
- 33:16of somebody else that's you've experienced your life, right?
- 33:22You can speak as you and not the journal instructor from a full
- 33:27meta deck, even though, even though he's pretty good.
- 33:32But that's not you though, is it?
- 33:34It came from him. So find yourself.
- 33:39Maybe you're just starting like I'm just starting and it is it
- 33:44is tough at first to recognize, hey, that's not me.
- 33:48But as you become more and more aware, you will start to oh, OK,
- 33:55you'll catch yourself most at first is from the mistakes that
- 33:59you just made that caused you to notice.
- 34:01That was not me speaking for me. That was something else.
- 34:03I was feared. I was this, that and the other
- 34:06that was trench. That was social media, that was
- 34:07insecurity or even good things, right?
- 34:11Even good things can be somebody else's voice that you haven't
- 34:17learned to internalize and make it your own.
- 34:21So what I'm saying is that understand who's really speaking
- 34:25for you is a way of finding you. But also in the process, we have
- 34:33to learn what we want, what we choose to internalize.
- 34:40So when we do speak, it is authentic.
- 34:43We don't forget about our life, right?
- 34:46We're not going to be this, I don't know, neutral person that
- 34:49never speaks out of turn or whatever.
- 34:52It's not passion, I'm not saying that, but choosing how you want
- 34:59to express yourself as yourself, not anybody else, as the way
- 35:06that God made you to be. That's the journey that I'm on.
- 35:13I'm really trying to, I'm trying to be more careful with my
- 35:17words. And man, I tell you what, being
- 35:20in the Marine Corps, well, I was like this before because we
- 35:25won't go there, but definitely the Marine Corps didn't help.
- 35:29I have a, a lot of times I pause during the podcast because I
- 35:33want to swear because I can't find a proper way to express
- 35:38myself. But that's not me.
- 35:40That was a defense mechanism because it, I thought it made me
- 35:45sound, I don't know, tougher. So I'm finding myself.
- 35:50And hopefully what I'm sharing resonates with you.
- 35:55And if you're trying to find yourself, just know that yeah,
- 36:00it's going to take some work, but you are the best person to
- 36:04be you and nobody else can compare.
- 36:07God made you to you. God made you to be unique.
- 36:12So next time when you're speaking, listen, be who God
- 36:24meant you to be. And let's all continue on this
- 36:30journey, right? What a, what a, what a journey
- 36:34it is. Anyways, Until next time, a
- 36:39couple weeks from now, I hope you guys are doing well.
- 36:42I pray for you guys. There's a lot of things going on
- 36:47in the world, but I think if we seek to become who God meant for
- 36:54us to be, yeah, there's hope. All right, until next time, talk
- 37:01to you guys later. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you
