- 0:02Speaker 1: Here he is. We're back at it. Derek Lewandowski, star
- 0:05Speaker 1: of Pinstripe Territory. You can check them out all off
- 0:08Speaker 1: season long, and then of course during the season after
- 0:10Speaker 1: every single Yankees game. Well, Derek, I know you jump
- 0:14Speaker 1: on as quickly as possible when the Yankees make a move.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So how's life not having to scramble to the studio?
- 0:20Speaker 2: So far?
- 0:22Speaker 3: It's been kind of a low key winter. I mean,
- 0:24Speaker 3: I'd much rather have an active off season. But there's
- 0:28Speaker 3: sort of a little bit of fun in the tension too.
- 0:30Speaker 3: It's kind of that, you know, will they won't they
- 0:32Speaker 3: in a lot of different areas, and it's one of
- 0:35Speaker 3: those off seasons where the path isn't real clear. You know,
- 0:39Speaker 3: when they wanted to get Jan Soto, right, that was
- 0:42Speaker 3: all anybody was talking about. Well, they go out and
- 0:44Speaker 3: get Sodo.
- 0:44Speaker 2: He's the perfect fit.
- 0:45Speaker 3: You know. Last year it was a lot of will
- 0:47Speaker 3: they get you know, Cody Bellinger? The the plan usually
- 0:52Speaker 3: is a lot more clear than it is this off season.
- 0:56Speaker 3: But the fact that Trent Grisham has come back and
- 0:59Speaker 3: except that qualifying offer, it complicates things, right because now
- 1:04Speaker 3: if you sign Bellinger or if you sign Tucker not
- 1:07Speaker 3: only are you two left handed, but you put a
- 1:09Speaker 3: big boulder right in front of both Jason Dominguez and
- 1:13Speaker 3: Spencer Jones, one of their top prospects. I believe Brian
- 1:17Speaker 3: Cashman when he says he's searching for pitching and a
- 1:19Speaker 3: right handed bat. A lot of times fans don't think
- 1:23Speaker 3: that Cashman is very forthcoming, But if you listen to
- 1:26Speaker 3: him and the tea leaves he drops a lot of
- 1:28Speaker 3: times he will tell you exactly what the Yankees are
- 1:30Speaker 3: looking for. And I think he wants to get more
- 1:32Speaker 3: right handed and I think he knows that the only
- 1:34Speaker 3: way you win in baseball is by having good starting pitching.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yankees are a little bit hamstrung in terms of their
- 1:39Speaker 3: pitching to open the season. I could see him trying
- 1:41Speaker 3: to reinforce the rotation, maybe get a bullpen arm or two,
- 1:45Speaker 3: and maybe a couple of unexciting right handed bats that
- 1:48Speaker 3: will actually make the Yankees more complete roster than they
- 1:51Speaker 3: are right now.
- 1:53Speaker 2: All right, I guess we're done then, D Like, you
- 1:56Speaker 2: already went through everything and the Yankees haven't done anything.
- 1:59Speaker 2: So what else can we talk about today? Now? I
- 2:01Speaker 2: want to talk about that first. I want to talk
- 2:04Speaker 2: about the right handed options, because I think that's the
- 2:06Speaker 2: most boring discussion for the Yankees unless it's not unless
- 2:11Speaker 2: it's did they just miss on the pee Alonso? Had
- 2:15Speaker 2: it happened later on, would that have been the fit
- 2:18Speaker 2: last year's right handed options that they acquired Paul Goldschmidt,
- 2:22Speaker 2: Jose Cabairo like is is the right handed market too
- 2:28Speaker 2: thin for the Yankees to go and get anybody that's
- 2:32Speaker 2: legitimately gonna fit? And people will be like, what about
- 2:34Speaker 2: Alex Bregman? You know, hal Steinbrenner doesn't go after a
- 2:39Speaker 2: Bregman and and a Tucker and a Bell And you're like,
- 2:42Speaker 2: Cashman is at the position where he's at. He's missed
- 2:45Speaker 2: one playoffs in his entire career as at GM because
- 2:49Speaker 2: he doesn't necessarily listen to all the rigamarow around you
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yankees fans. So where's that right handed option? If if
- 2:57Speaker 2: the tea leave that he dropped is true, they need
- 3:00Speaker 2: to get a little bit more right handed.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Well, he's missed more than one playoff in his career,
- 3:05Speaker 3: so correct you There just a slight corrections to the
- 3:07Speaker 3: record there. But I think there's a couple of names
- 3:10Speaker 3: that are kind of floating under the radar that people
- 3:12Speaker 3: might want to think about. First of all, a Miguel
- 3:14Speaker 3: and Duhar reunion could be interesting. I mean, he mashed
- 3:18Speaker 3: against lefties last year. You've got a left fielder right
- 3:21Speaker 3: now in Dominguez who cannot hit left handed pitching just
- 3:25Speaker 3: can't do it. We'll see how it works out. He's
- 3:27Speaker 3: playing winter ball, but you know, maybe a platoon situation there.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I could see him bringing back Amed Rosario. I was
- 3:34Speaker 3: thinking about Josh Young from the Rangers. You know, he
- 3:38Speaker 3: could be a platoon option at third base with Ryan McMahon.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Not a lot of like big name, twenty million dollar guys.
- 3:46Speaker 3: But if you read the tea leaves, it kind of
- 3:49Speaker 3: sounds like they want to follow the Blue Jays model,
- 3:52Speaker 3: which is, you know, not necessarily outspend everybody, but fill
- 3:56Speaker 3: in the roster with you know, practical ballplayers to supplement
- 4:00Speaker 3: your stars. And I could see them just bringing in
- 4:03Speaker 3: kind of these role player guys, platoon type guys, maybe
- 4:05Speaker 3: getting a few pieces that don't necessarily push the payroll
- 4:09Speaker 3: too high, and then spending the big dollars on pitching
- 4:11Speaker 3: where I know he will spend it. You know, if
- 4:14Speaker 3: you look at the major contracts, he's given out in
- 4:16Speaker 3: the last few years. You know, it's it's Carlos Rodon,
- 4:19Speaker 3: Max Freed, you know, Garrett Cole twice. It's it's it's
- 4:23Speaker 3: pitching that he wants to spend on. So I think
- 4:25Speaker 3: that he will try and supplement with role player types
- 4:28Speaker 3: in terms of the right handed bats.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So right handed bats boring. I need bigger names. Tattis,
- 4:34Speaker 2: give me tattoos. Tattoos. There's there's your big name. He
- 4:38Speaker 2: just they just came Peler just came out and said
- 4:40Speaker 2: he's untouchable. So that's not gonna happen to Miguel Andrew. Horror.
- 4:44Speaker 2: You already ran him out of this city. He's not
- 4:47Speaker 2: coming back. There's no way. Well he didn't.
- 4:50Speaker 3: He didn't seem happy about his lack of playing time
- 4:53Speaker 3: towards the end of his Yankees tenure. But I always
- 4:55Speaker 3: liked him as a player. I know he's a fan favorite.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I call him Migey two bags because he hits a
- 4:59Speaker 3: lot of doubles. I just love those guys who just
- 5:02Speaker 3: rake doubles, keeps action on the bases, He's always smiling,
- 5:06Speaker 3: like I always felt like he was a good guy
- 5:08Speaker 3: for the clubhouse, and obviously I'm not in the clubhouse,
- 5:10Speaker 3: I can't tell, but he seemed like a good chemistry guy.
- 5:12Speaker 3: In fact, does Yankees need more damage against lefties? And
- 5:16Speaker 3: he is somebody that hits lefties, And I think that
- 5:18Speaker 3: for the right price and an opportunity to, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: get to bats on a winning team, he would consider
- 5:25Speaker 3: coming back.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Blue Jays took care of business last year. As we know,
- 5:31Speaker 4: you see the roster construction of what they're doing and
- 5:33Speaker 4: what the Yankees are doing. How is the Yankees gonna
- 5:36Speaker 4: get to be those dogs again on top of the
- 5:39Speaker 4: Al East because this Blue Jay team doesn't seem like
- 5:41Speaker 4: they're stopping.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Blue Jays are good. Todd.
- 5:46Speaker 3: There was a lot of Yankees fans that called in
- 5:49Speaker 3: or watched my show right after the series and they
- 5:52Speaker 3: were ticked at the Yankees, And I was like, you
- 5:54Speaker 3: know what, the Blue Jays they just they just beat us, right,
- 5:57Speaker 3: They just they just completely kicked our butt. And it
- 6:02Speaker 3: wasn't one of those situations where the Yankees beat themselves
- 6:04Speaker 3: like in the World Series last year. I still contend
- 6:06Speaker 3: if the Yanks had played better, they had a chance
- 6:07Speaker 3: to win that series. But I mean, the Jay's just
- 6:10Speaker 3: dominated and it's clear they're not going away, like you said,
- 6:14Speaker 3: Will they bring back Bobashett? You know, could the Yankees
- 6:17Speaker 3: maybe swoop in and steal their best contact hitter. That's
- 6:22Speaker 3: something I would love to see. I've been a big
- 6:24Speaker 3: Bobashett fan. I No, defensively, he's not the greatest, but
- 6:28Speaker 3: he would give you a leadoff hit or a contact guy,
- 6:30Speaker 3: another right handed bat, another infielder. You know, It'll be
- 6:34Speaker 3: interesting to see if Volpi is actually able to come
- 6:37Speaker 3: back from this injury at full strength. I know that
- 6:40Speaker 3: he missed well. He wasn't as strong last year as
- 6:45Speaker 3: they had hoped, and they said after the season that
- 6:47Speaker 3: the injury was worse than they had thought, which makes
- 6:50Speaker 3: you wonder if, like the surgery to repair it will
- 6:53Speaker 3: hold him back more than was anticipated. Right, So I
- 6:57Speaker 3: think that, you know, if you're not able to get
- 7:00Speaker 3: guarantee that Volpi's gonna solidify that shortstop spot and do damage,
- 7:04Speaker 3: you gotta look at other options. And Boba Schet's sitting
- 7:06Speaker 3: out there for the taking.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I feel like that's gonna be a hard one though,
- 7:11Speaker 4: at the end of the day, getting him to come there.
- 7:13Speaker 4: They got Cabrera, they got cay Baliro again, not the
- 7:17Speaker 4: sexiest and things that we want to hear, but they
- 7:20Speaker 4: can play. My next question to you is, though, can
- 7:23Speaker 4: you I mean do mingas Spencer Jones. These are two
- 7:26Speaker 4: really good prospects, and Dominga has been up there for
- 7:29Speaker 4: Can you see a trade for enter one of these guys?
- 7:32Speaker 4: I mean, dare I say Trek Scuobel with a couple
- 7:35Speaker 4: other prospects to get him over to the Yankees.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I could see it. I mean I never say never
- 7:41Speaker 3: with Brian Cashman because I remember one February day, Alex
- 7:44Speaker 3: Rodriguez was having a press conference holding up the Yankees
- 7:47Speaker 3: jersey with number thirteen on it, and I never thought
- 7:49Speaker 3: I would see that, And so since that day, I
- 7:52Speaker 3: don't rule out anything. But you know, Schooble's one of
- 7:56Speaker 3: these guys who can push you over the top in
- 7:58Speaker 3: terms of a rotation. I mean, in the lefties, you
- 8:01Speaker 3: run out there, win healthy Max Freed, three Scooble, Carlos
- 8:06Speaker 3: Rodon and then righty's Garrett Cole coming back. Hopefully he'll
- 8:10Speaker 3: be at full strength by the end of the season.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I'm anticipating that he'll be hitting mid season for him,
- 8:15Speaker 3: right around the time the Yankees are getting into the
- 8:16Speaker 3: Pennant race, you know, and then Cam Schlittler. I mean,
- 8:19Speaker 3: I mean, you guys saw what Cam Schlittler did in
- 8:21Speaker 3: the postseason. The sky is the limit for this guy.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I think that's five horses that win you the division.
- 8:26Speaker 3: But I still think you do need a right handed
- 8:28Speaker 3: bat or two to go with it, and you need
- 8:30Speaker 3: some bullpen help. But Schooble's definitely somebody who would get
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yankees fans excited. The issue there is that you got
- 8:39Speaker 3: to re sign him. You know. It's the same issue
- 8:40Speaker 3: that you had with Juan Soto. You make a trade,
- 8:44Speaker 3: you acquire an impact player, and then he becomes a
- 8:47Speaker 3: free agent and you lose the guys that you traded
- 8:50Speaker 3: for him, right, I mean, Michael King, we lost him
- 8:54Speaker 3: for a year, right. There was some other pitching depth
- 8:57Speaker 3: pieces that we could definitely have used and they're gone now.
- 9:02Speaker 3: And we only had Soto for one year. So if
- 9:05Speaker 3: you trade for school, but you're definitely putting yourself in
- 9:07Speaker 3: a tough spot in terms of death.
- 9:10Speaker 2: November twelfth today, I'm sorry, December twelfth only off, my
- 9:15Speaker 2: only off by a month, But it's almost Christmas. Are
- 9:19Speaker 2: the Yankees the third best team? In the American League
- 9:21Speaker 2: East today where we sit with where the rest of
- 9:25Speaker 2: the East has made their moves.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I think so, and I think they were before the
- 9:30Speaker 3: other moves were made. I mean, I'm counting on a
- 9:33Speaker 3: healthy Red Sox team with Roman Anthony being better than
- 9:37Speaker 3: the Yankees. I mean, they they would have beaten the Yankees,
- 9:40Speaker 3: I think in that series if they had Roman Anthony.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And you know, they've added Sonny Gray, who hates the
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yankees and always seems to pitch well against the Yankees.
- 9:50Speaker 3: So you know, the Blue Jays are going to be aggressive.
- 9:53Speaker 3: We'll see if they bring back Bashett, but assuming they do,
- 9:55Speaker 3: they're going to be strong again. I think Brian Cashman
- 9:59Speaker 3: knows right now that this team has a chance to
- 10:02Speaker 3: get to the playoffs, but they've got to really sort
- 10:07Speaker 3: of steer the ship in a little bit better direction
- 10:11Speaker 3: if they want to win the division next year. Right now,
- 10:14Speaker 3: right now, they're a wild card team, you know, and
- 10:16Speaker 3: you don't want to be in that position again. So there,
- 10:21Speaker 3: like he said, there's still a lot of offseason left
- 10:24Speaker 3: to make things happen, but we're gonna like to see
- 10:27Speaker 3: a little bit more aggression here coming forward.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Obviously, the Yankees will be the Yankees forever. But this
- 10:34Speaker 2: is the Aaron Judge era. The Aaron Judge era has
- 10:37Speaker 2: essentially five more seasons. Whether you think he's gonna age out, whatever,
- 10:42Speaker 2: that's not the discussion right now. Is this really a
- 10:46Speaker 2: big make or break off season for the sense that
- 10:48Speaker 2: when you look at like Pete a Lonzo's contract is
- 10:51Speaker 2: five years. When you start looking at like Dylan Ceez
- 10:54Speaker 2: pitcher position player, his is seven years. This offseason, you're
- 10:59Speaker 2: signing guys that are going to need to win. With
- 11:02Speaker 2: Aaron Judge and the way you're talking right now, you
- 11:06Speaker 2: want to make the playoffs, Like, yeah, you want to
- 11:08Speaker 2: make the playoffs. And I don't think that's the that's
- 11:12Speaker 2: the essence of having a Monument Park player on your
- 11:16Speaker 2: team that you want to make the playoffs. No, you
- 11:19Speaker 2: want to dominate and you want to create these next
- 11:21Speaker 2: five years of dominance. And I think it comes down
- 11:25Speaker 2: it shouldn't come down to a Cody Bellinger in this case.
- 11:28Speaker 3: No, I agree with you one hundred percent. As Yankees fans,
- 11:30Speaker 3: we want to win every year and we think that
- 11:32Speaker 3: if you don't win the World Series, it feels like
- 11:34Speaker 3: a failure because we've been trained to think that, but
- 11:38Speaker 3: it's clear that with hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman in
- 11:42Speaker 3: recent years, the plan seems to be get to the postseason,
- 11:46Speaker 3: have a healthy pitching staff if you can, and try
- 11:49Speaker 3: and win that way. Whether or not that's gonna work,
- 11:51Speaker 3: I don't know. I agree with you one hundred percent.
- 11:55Speaker 3: You got to maximize the Aaron Judge years. And whether
- 11:58Speaker 3: it's five years, whether it's whether it's three years of
- 12:01Speaker 3: his prime. I still think he's got at least a
- 12:05Speaker 3: few good years left in him of I mean, even
- 12:07Speaker 3: if he drops off ten fifteen percent a year, he's
- 12:10Speaker 3: still elite for a few years. It's just how long
- 12:13Speaker 3: is he going to stay healthy?
- 12:14Speaker 2: Right?
- 12:14Speaker 3: I Mean there's questions, There's always been questions about how
- 12:17Speaker 3: that big body will age. I think in a couple
- 12:20Speaker 3: of years, John Carlos Stanton is off the payroll, Judge
- 12:24Speaker 3: can shift over to DH and kind of become that,
- 12:26Speaker 3: you know, DH late into his thirties hopefully and continue
- 12:29Speaker 3: to match. But yeah, we want to see him riding down,
- 12:34Speaker 3: you know, afloat on the you know, canyon of Heroes,
- 12:37Speaker 3: holding up the trophy. We want to see that. We
- 12:39Speaker 3: need that, and right now, it feels like the Yanks
- 12:42Speaker 3: are trying to give themselves a chance at that rather
- 12:46Speaker 3: than let's go out and make it happen.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:49Speaker 1: You don't look at them like he used to and
- 12:51Speaker 1: say a best roster on paper, easy, right? You know
- 12:54Speaker 1: they'll have to get upset. That's definitely not It's just, hey,
- 12:57Speaker 1: they're in the mix. They're in the mix every year,
- 12:59Speaker 1: they're in the playoff mix. I got two free you.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But first off, who's the shortstop for the Yankees next year?
- 13:05Speaker 1: I know you mentioned Volpi, but he's had two years
- 13:08Speaker 1: that I don't think are championship level, and now he's
- 13:10Speaker 1: coming off shoulder surgery. Cue the excuses when he's struggling,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and that's not necessarily his fault. But guy's coming off
- 13:16Speaker 1: shoulder surgery. Usually it doesn't look good. Matt McLean Actually
- 13:19Speaker 1: there's an example. I don't know if they were different
- 13:21Speaker 1: shoulder surgery. It just came to me just now. But
- 13:23Speaker 1: he was a shell of himself this past season for
- 13:25Speaker 1: the Reds. I don't think he has the leash to
- 13:27Speaker 1: go through another season where he's not good enough.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Yah.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Yeah, So he was already getting replaced in games by
- 13:35Speaker 3: cabal Row late in the season. So I think right now,
- 13:37Speaker 3: if the season started tomorrow, cabbal Aro is your shortstop.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Problem is we're one pulled hamstring away from having no shortstop.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Right if caw By Arrow goes down, I mean, who's
- 13:45Speaker 3: your backup? Oswaldo Cabrera's coming back from a broken ankle,
- 13:49Speaker 3: Can he play shortstop? I don't know, I don't. I mean,
- 13:52Speaker 3: and we got a cat in the background making a appearance.
- 13:56Speaker 3: It's gonna be really awkward if he takes a dump
- 13:58Speaker 3: right there.
- 13:59Speaker 2: But I.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Feel like, I feel like if when Volpi comes back,
- 14:06Speaker 3: the job is his and he's gonna have about six weeks, right,
- 14:10Speaker 3: and if he comes back in May, by mid June,
- 14:13Speaker 3: if he's hitting one eighty one ninety and the power
- 14:16Speaker 3: isn't there, I think you got to look at you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: making a deal or or you know, uh trade, some
- 14:23Speaker 3: kind of a big trade, deadline acquisition. We have seen
- 14:25Speaker 3: Corey Seeger's name kind of in the rumors, and we
- 14:28Speaker 3: know that Texas is kind of breaking it down. But again,
- 14:30Speaker 3: that doesn't solve your left handed, you know, being too
- 14:33Speaker 3: left handed problem. So I don't buy that necessarily unless
- 14:37Speaker 3: there was some kind of a deal in which they
- 14:39Speaker 3: were also willing to give Josh Young, maybe take back
- 14:41Speaker 3: a you know, Ryan McMahon, that type of thing. Like
- 14:45Speaker 3: one thing that Cashman will do is surprise you with
- 14:48Speaker 3: some creative, kind of blockbuster trades. They're not always good,
- 14:52Speaker 3: you know, Donaldson taking him on to get Isaiah Kinder
- 14:55Speaker 3: Fileffo was not really the smartest move. They were banking
- 14:57Speaker 3: on ikf being a great shortstop that didn't have happen,
- 15:00Speaker 3: uh you know, but you know there was the Jesus Montero,
- 15:03Speaker 3: the late Hazus Montero for for uh, for Michael Pinada
- 15:07Speaker 3: one year that came out of nowhere. So he will
- 15:10Speaker 3: surprise you with some some random trades, So don't be
- 15:13Speaker 3: shocked if he goes out there and gets a shortstop.
- 15:15Speaker 2: One of the things that Cashman talked about at the
- 15:18Speaker 2: winter meetings was the fact that they feel good about
- 15:20Speaker 2: their bullpen with Bednar, the pickups that they made. You know,
- 15:23Speaker 2: they kind of made their bullpen moves during the trade
- 15:26Speaker 2: deadline and Camilla Duvall. Are they still short because they
- 15:31Speaker 2: got they didn't get. They didn't bring back Devin Williams,
- 15:34Speaker 2: they didn't bring back Luke Weaver yet. I think maybe
- 15:37Speaker 2: there's a possibility of a reunion there, but where is
- 15:40Speaker 2: that bullpen? Obviously we know where it's at currently, But
- 15:45Speaker 2: can they not dip into the deep market because now
- 15:49Speaker 2: the market the top guys are gone Suarez, Devin Williams
- 15:52Speaker 2: and and Edwin Diaz. So are they going to dip
- 15:56Speaker 2: into the next level of deep market in there or
- 15:59Speaker 2: do they have their two pieces and they're just gonna
- 16:01Speaker 2: fill in Well.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I think that there's some interest in Trevor McGill from
- 16:05Speaker 3: the Brewers, hard throwing righty, if you believe Ken Rosenthal
- 16:09Speaker 3: and Will Salmon, which I do. The Yankees are also
- 16:11Speaker 3: in on Freddy Peralta. This is another one of those
- 16:13Speaker 3: areas where I could see kind of getting multiple birds
- 16:16Speaker 3: with one stone kind of situation, trying to get Peralta
- 16:18Speaker 3: and McGill and then maybe some of those pieces you
- 16:21Speaker 3: mentioned earlier going back in a trade. Look, Milwaukee's scouting
- 16:25Speaker 3: is so good I would expect any deal that we
- 16:28Speaker 3: make with them for them to rake the Yankees over
- 16:30Speaker 3: the coals in terms of prospects. But the Yankies also
- 16:33Speaker 3: have some really good young arms that are, you know,
- 16:36Speaker 3: starting pitchers in the minor leagues. But that are power arms.
- 16:39Speaker 3: You know Elmer Cruz, you know Ben Hess, Bryce Cunningham.
- 16:43Speaker 3: We have seen them use starting pitchers as relievers in
- 16:47Speaker 3: the major leagues before, and they say, there's, you know,
- 16:51Speaker 3: no such thing as a relief pitching prospect. A lot
- 16:53Speaker 3: of times it's failed starting pitchers, and these guys aren't
- 16:55Speaker 3: necessarily failed, but they're they're guys who could solve a
- 16:57Speaker 3: problem cheaply with ninety eight on our fastballs and maybe
- 17:01Speaker 3: one good off speed pitch. So I think there's a
- 17:04Speaker 3: chance the Yankees might try and build internally with their bullpen.
- 17:08Speaker 3: They might look at guys who are cast offs. I
- 17:11Speaker 3: don't see him going out and spending big on a
- 17:13Speaker 3: relief pitcher, but I could see them if they make
- 17:15Speaker 3: a deal getting McGill.
- 17:18Speaker 2: All right, If McGill is the guy, and you're talking
- 17:22Speaker 2: about a team coming from a team that produces closers,
- 17:25Speaker 2: that's just what they do. From a hater to Devin Williams,
- 17:28Speaker 2: the McGill they get value for him. It's also a
- 17:31Speaker 2: team that wants to win. I know he's your guy,
- 17:35Speaker 2: but do you give up Ben Rice for McGill? Straight up, No,
- 17:39Speaker 2: I don't think I would make that deal. I think
- 17:41Speaker 2: Ben Rice is your starting first baseman next year. The
- 17:44Speaker 2: metrics are really gone, and if he learns how to
- 17:46Speaker 2: hit left, he is a little bit better. I mean,
- 17:48Speaker 2: this is an all star. The Yankees kind of view
- 17:50Speaker 2: him as a Kyle Schwarber type of hitter, like a
- 17:52Speaker 2: guy who could eventually hit forty plus home runs a year,
- 17:56Speaker 2: and I agree with him. And as a lefty and
- 17:58Speaker 2: Yankee stadium, he's just too dangerous. I think I would
- 18:02Speaker 2: rather see them go with some kind of other creative
- 18:05Speaker 2: move and fill out the bullpen rather than having it
- 18:08Speaker 2: to deal Ben Rice. I just don't think that that's
- 18:10Speaker 2: a move.
- 18:11Speaker 3: And when you're talking about Miguel is a guy who
- 18:13Speaker 3: has had a flex restrain, which a lot of times
- 18:17Speaker 3: can indicate, you know, stress on the elbow, which maybe
- 18:19Speaker 3: is a precursor to Tommy John. Just anecdotally, I'd be
- 18:23Speaker 3: worried about trading a reliable, up and coming power lefty
- 18:27Speaker 3: bat for a guy who you know throws one hundred
- 18:31Speaker 3: and two but could get hurt at any point.
- 18:33Speaker 2: All Right, I set you up for that one because
- 18:35Speaker 2: I knew you would say Ben Rice, no, just like
- 18:37Speaker 2: you would have said Jason Dominguez, a few years ago. No,
- 18:40Speaker 2: you can never touch my Jason. Yeah, Spencer Jones. Then
- 18:43Speaker 2: all of a sudden, he's the one guy you hear
- 18:45Speaker 2: he's untouchable. He's running out of time in the minor leagues.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Is it Spencer Jones? Straight up? Because that's a big
- 18:52Speaker 2: league player. It's a big league hitter. Of the adjustments
- 18:54Speaker 2: he's made that the Milwaukee Brewers will say, here you go,
- 18:58Speaker 2: good luck, here's six hundred got bets. Yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Well, I had Josh Norris from Baseball America on my
- 19:03Speaker 3: show about a week ago, and he was not very
- 19:05Speaker 3: high on Spencer Jones and rated him at the bottom
- 19:09Speaker 3: of the twenty eighty scale in terms of his hit tool.
- 19:11Speaker 3: He rated him a twenty And so you know, if
- 19:15Speaker 3: you believe that, yeah, I would. I would move Spencer Jones.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I mean, you're looking at like high thirty strikeout rate
- 19:21Speaker 3: in the minor leagues. You guys know as well as
- 19:22Speaker 3: I do, that strikeout rate doesn't typically go down when
- 19:24Speaker 3: you go from the major from the miners to the majors.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I know he's got power. I know he's been compared
- 19:29Speaker 3: to a left handed Aaron Judge. I've always said that
- 19:31Speaker 3: that's unfair but you know, I would have no problem
- 19:36Speaker 3: moving Spencer Jones if it meant improving the big league club.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Derek last one, And I know you touched on this
- 19:42Speaker 1: on an episode a couple of weeks ago, but just
- 19:44Speaker 1: for our audience to give them a taste of not
- 19:46Speaker 1: only what you said, but then also what you've heard
- 19:49Speaker 1: from the Yankees community. What were the thoughts on hal
- 19:52Speaker 1: Steinberner saying that the team was not that profitable. I'm
- 19:57Speaker 1: sure that was a tough one to swallow. It's one
- 19:59Speaker 1: thing to talk to each other off season about, you know,
- 20:00Speaker 1: where you're at with budgeting. I think everybody understands that.
- 20:04Speaker 1: For me, as a media member, I was personally offended
- 20:07Speaker 1: when he's trying to go over like what revenue versus
- 20:09Speaker 1: profit is, Like most of us get it, including the
- 20:12Speaker 1: person that asked the question. That's not what they were asking.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Right, So there was a few a few things about
- 20:17Speaker 3: me that about that that bothered me. He complained about
- 20:20Speaker 3: the one hundred dollars tax bill or one hundred million
- 20:23Speaker 3: dollar tax bill in the city, which is kind of
- 20:24Speaker 3: a sweetheart deal, you know what I mean, Like that's
- 20:27Speaker 3: the cost of doing business on the most expensive real
- 20:31Speaker 3: estate in America, right, I mean.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And I heard it's not one hundred, by the way, Derek,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I heard it's more like eighty. And again, I know
- 20:40Speaker 1: it's a big deal, but I heard it's like eighty.
- 20:41Speaker 1: And it actually if you listen to David Samson's show,
- 20:44Speaker 1: who's really good on this stuff and used to be
- 20:45Speaker 1: in an ownership group at the Marlins, he essentially said
- 20:48Speaker 1: it was just the way of them not showing the
- 20:50Speaker 1: public that they were paying for things, right like, because
- 20:53Speaker 1: the Yanks were like, oh, we're self funded, Like it
- 20:54Speaker 1: wasn't self funded, and Hal just said it himself.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, the bite.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I watched David Sampson a lot and I love his stuff,
- 21:02Speaker 3: and he has been saying for a while that the
- 21:03Speaker 3: Yankees are not that profitable. So I mean, maybe he's right,
- 21:06Speaker 3: and maybe how is right. But if you're not profitable
- 21:09Speaker 3: as the ownership of the New York Yankees, you need
- 21:12Speaker 3: to get the heck out of the baseball business and
- 21:15Speaker 3: sell it to somebody who will you know, I said, basically,
- 21:18Speaker 3: you know if you inherit a Ferrari right, and you're
- 21:23Speaker 3: just gonna drive it forty miles an hour back and
- 21:25Speaker 3: forth to the grocery store. You probably got no business
- 21:27Speaker 3: owning that Ferrari. Sell it to somebody who's gonna get
- 21:30Speaker 3: out there and take it on the track and use
- 21:32Speaker 3: it the way a Ferrari is meant to be driven.
- 21:35Speaker 3: If if how is not making a profit and not
- 21:39Speaker 3: able to compete with other teams like the Dodgers and
- 21:43Speaker 3: like the Mets across town financially anymore, he should take
- 21:47Speaker 3: that as a sign to hey, let's pass it on, right.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I mean, I know it's his father's legacy, but his father,
- 21:54Speaker 3: I think, was under one hundred thousand dollars in personal
- 21:57Speaker 3: funds invested into the Yankees when he bought it, And
- 22:01Speaker 3: you can easily sell that franchise for ten billion dollars
- 22:04Speaker 3: right now. I mean, put everybody in the family on
- 22:08Speaker 3: Easy Street for generations, right and let a group like
- 22:13Speaker 3: the Goggenheims, let a big Wall Street firm take over.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Just make sure that there's somebody who wants to win
- 22:19Speaker 3: in charge. And I'm good with it. As as I
- 22:22Speaker 3: said on my show a couple weeks ago, we don't
- 22:24Speaker 3: care who pays the bills. We care who raises.
- 22:27Speaker 1: The trophy, perfectly stated, And I actually think, yeah, if
- 22:32Speaker 1: you and me took over tomorrow, we could fix that.
- 22:34Speaker 1: If there's really a profitability issue.
- 22:37Speaker 2: I don't get for the eighty million dollar tax bill.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I think you can if you see the revenue coming
- 22:44Speaker 1: in On the other side. There's a lot of things
- 22:45Speaker 1: that happened behind the scenes. Most owners have you know,
- 22:48Speaker 1: they pay themselves, they pay others around them.
- 22:51Speaker 3: There are a lot of.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Things that you could clean up pretty quickly. Just I'll
- 22:53Speaker 1: give you one quick example. John Angelos, who used to
- 22:56Speaker 1: be running the Orioles after his lay father Peter passed
- 22:59Speaker 1: away and then they sold it. He was paying himself
- 23:01Speaker 1: five million dollars to run mass in the TV network.
- 23:03Speaker 1: He knows nothing about that. He doesn't do much with
- 23:05Speaker 1: the network that alone, right, should just tell you how
- 23:07Speaker 1: some of the money gets hidden and how you're able
- 23:10Speaker 1: to take it out of certain ventures that you have,
- 23:12Speaker 1: Just to give like one taste of how things work
- 23:15Speaker 1: behind the scenes. We're never going to see the books.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I just it bothered me when I heard that.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I think there's probably a director of financial loopholes somewhere
- 23:23Speaker 3: within the Yankees organization whose only job it is to
- 23:26Speaker 3: find those financial loopholes.
- 23:28Speaker 1: As there should be Derek. Great catching up man. Have
- 23:31Speaker 1: a great holiday everyone. Check out plenty of content coming
- 23:34Speaker 1: from Pinstriped Territory Derek follow all the socials too, and
- 23:38Speaker 1: Derek will be popping on Live whenever it is for
- 23:41Speaker 1: breaking news when the Yankees do things. Thanks to you,
- 23:44Speaker 1: Good to see you man.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Happy holidays guys,
