- 0:16Speaker 2: Now, our export is bringing in the big bucks. Export
- 0:19Speaker 2: value has totaled eight point nine billion dollars for the
- 0:22Speaker 2: month of May. That's up one point four billion on
- 0:24Speaker 2: last year. Meat was the biggest driver, up forty three
- 0:27Speaker 2: percent year on year. Kate Acklan as Beef and Lamb's
- 0:31Speaker 2: New Zealand's chair and she's with us Hi, Kate hi her,
- 0:35Speaker 2: how can we explain it going up forty three percent?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Oh?
- 0:39Speaker 3: Look, there's a combination effectors. So we've seen really strong
- 0:42Speaker 3: demand across all of our key markets and you know,
- 0:45Speaker 3: record low supply. The US heard, for example, is at
- 0:49Speaker 3: its lowest level since nineteen fifty. So a combination of
- 0:52Speaker 3: that high demand, low supply, and I think you know,
- 0:56Speaker 3: have to say it is supported by a low key
- 0:57Speaker 3: wee dollar at the moment.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that will be helping the other. Do you think
- 1:02Speaker 2: part of it also is the WAGOVI.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Oh absolutely. I was in the States a month ago
- 1:07Speaker 3: and it was all about the GLP ones over there,
- 1:10Speaker 3: So you know that is driving a real demand for safe,
- 1:14Speaker 3: high quality protein. That New Zealand's really well placed to meat.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Can we strip out how much of this is actually
- 1:19Speaker 2: because of the Wigovi stuff?
- 1:22Speaker 3: Oh look, we can't, but we know that about estimates
- 1:25Speaker 3: of sort of fifteen to twenty percent of Americans are
- 1:28Speaker 3: on those drugs at any one time, and they really
- 1:30Speaker 3: need the protein. So it's great for our dairy and
- 1:33Speaker 3: it's great for our red meat.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, and the farmers just fizzing over this.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Oh look, farmers are great. You know, I was at
- 1:40Speaker 3: field Days last week. Absolute energy. But you know this
- 1:44Speaker 3: is great for all of New Zealand because farmers love
- 1:46Speaker 3: spending money on their farms. And so what we'll see
- 1:48Speaker 3: is when farm balance sheets are strong, then that will
- 1:51Speaker 3: start flying into regional economies. And you know, we're seeing
- 1:54Speaker 3: it already.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And now what so at the moment, the US is
- 1:57Speaker 2: the biggest uptech for US, But then China's also rebounded
- 2:00Speaker 2: quite well. What's going on there China?
- 2:03Speaker 3: Obviously post COVID, the economic conditions over there weren't strong.
- 2:07Speaker 3: But what we have seen is, you know that China's
- 2:10Speaker 3: bouncing back and with a bit of uncertainty in the US,
- 2:13Speaker 3: our exporters have gone looked at China and thought. You know,
- 2:17Speaker 3: there's some high value market opportunities there too, and New
- 2:20Speaker 3: Zealand's in a really good position. We have great market
- 2:23Speaker 3: access across a range of markets, so we can pick
- 2:26Speaker 3: and choose the best best markets for the best products.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So you know, China is also turning into a high
- 2:32Speaker 3: value market for us.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And good stuff. Kate, it's good to talk to you mate.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Thank you, Kate, Aklan Beef and LAMB New Zealand.
