- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The Gospel today is the Lord's Prayer and not the one that we usually use,
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: but another translation, the one from Luke with essentially the same meaning.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to reflect specifically on that last line,
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: which is we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And it's a little bit different, but similar to what we usually say in the Our Father.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And it leads us, I think, into that idea of and discussion of forgiveness.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Just yesterday I heard from our speaker for the Dawson Pastoral Council,
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: he said that if you're angry,
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: if you struggle with anger in your life, good news is there's an easy cure.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: It's forgiveness.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: It turns out it's not a very easy cure because forgiveness can be the hardest thing
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: that there is in life, but That's something that's very important to realize.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So people are like, ah, you know, I just really struggle with anger.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I'm, you know, lashing out at people and so on and so forth.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Well, are there things that you have not forgiven?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And if there are, you need to do that.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And that does not mean letting people off the hook.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: That's what people often confuse forgiveness with sort of,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: you know, just saying, well, it doesn't matter.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It doesn't happen.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to hold someone accountable.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: No, forgiveness has nothing to do with any of those things, but it's letting go.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's letting go of that.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Sort of burden, carrying that, holding onto that.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Really, in a sense,
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: that's why it's interesting here that it says we forgive everyone in debt to us
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: because we know how to forgive a debt.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Like someone owes me money, I can say, hey, you know what, you need to pay up.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Or at some point I can say, okay, you know what, don't worry about it.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: We can do that with physical things and forgiveness is actually the same.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Now often things that we hold or against people or things that people have done
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: to us,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: it's much harder than if someone has even taken money from us,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: if they have attacked us personally,
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: if they have taken our good reputation from us,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: if they have attacked someone who we love.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: The great examples of forgiveness that I have run across in my life.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Her Immacule Ilybaguisa survived the Rwandan genocide and was able to forgive
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: the people who slaughtered her family within her hearing.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And Eva Moses Kor, who is a survivor of the Holocaust, it's the only way of healing.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Anybody who has had trauma,
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: anyone who was experiencing suffering,
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: only by letting that burden go, by laying it down, can I begin to have healing?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Can I begin to walk that path?
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: It's not for that other person in as much as it is for me, for myself, for my own healing.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And as much as we know and have heard over and over again that we need to forgive,
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: it's the hardest thing in the world to do.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It's something that we have to ask the Lord to help us with.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: We all have people in our lives who have hurt us, who have sinned against us.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Who we hold things against them.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And we have to realize that the only way forward,
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: the only way we're going to get healing is if we lay those things down.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: That we can do it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: We are free.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We have the ability, as hard as it is, to let go of those things.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: To say, I will not hold this against you.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I am letting go of that.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I am going forward to be as healthy and full as I can.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: And I leave you in the hands of God.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Everything that you've done, I leave that in His hands.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: That's a grace that we have to ask the Lord to help us with today.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: It's a grace that he wants to give us.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: He wants us to live full, happy, free lives.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: To be freed from these things.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: To be as full and as filled with goodness as we can be.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Let's ask the Lord for help on that journey.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: For help on that journey of growing.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Growing closer to Him,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: growing closer to one another,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: and being healed that our hearts may be healed and freed from any of these burdens
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: that we carry.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: He said, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: He wants to take our burdens on Him.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: He's taken the burden of the guilt of everyone upon himself.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And if Eva Kormoses could forgive the Nazis,
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: if Immaculate Hylipagisa could forgive the Hutus,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: we also can forgive those in our lives who have hurt us much, much less.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Then those people were hurt and who still with the rays of God were able to find
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: the strength to forgive, to let go, to go forward in peace and in love of a joy.
