Transcript
- 0:01Jennifer Davis: Welcome to The Best of Redmond.
- 0:03Jennifer Davis: I'm Jennifer Davis
- 0:05Dan Schulz: And I'm Dan Schultz, and this is Redmond's twice weekly newsletter and podcast about all of the amazing things happening in and around Redmond for the next seven days.
- 0:16Dan Schulz: Jennifer, what is this major music act hitting the area?
- 0:21Jennifer Davis: Well, the Black Keys are heading to Rumlinger Farms Incarnation this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and that's still a pretty weirdly awesome venue for a band that big.
- 0:32Jennifer Davis: The whole thing is outdoors, so instead of dealing with arena parking garages and their prices and downtown Seattle traffic, you're basically listening to blues rock in the middle of farm country.
- 0:45Jennifer Davis: If you've never done one of Rumlinger Farm's shows before, the setup's surprisingly easy once you're there.
- 0:52Jennifer Davis: It's worth leaving early though, because everybody on the east side suddenly remembers Carnation exists the second concerts start happening out there.
- 1:01Dan Schulz: What is Carnation?
- 1:02Dan Schulz: Carnation.
- 1:04Dan Schulz: That's right.
- 1:10Dan Schulz: The Redmond Library is hosting a Yoga for Stress Relief class on Sunday, May 31st from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
- 1:16Dan Schulz: And you know what?
- 1:16Dan Schulz: The timing feels pretty appropriate after the week that a lot of us have been having this week.
- 1:21Jennifer Davis: It's been a tough one
- 1:22Dan Schulz: Shilpa from Peace Yoga is leading an intro level session focused on relaxation and simple breathing techniques, so you definitely don't need to be somebody doing handstands on Instagram to show up.
- 1:36Dan Schulz: Uh, bring a yoga mat if you have one, and if you don't have one, do not get stressed about it.
- 1:42Dan Schulz: The whole point of this is yoga for stress relief
- 1:47Jennifer Davis: Sama Sellers is doing a stand-up comedy night Thursday, May 28th, with Taylor Clark headlining alongside Genevieve Ferrari.
- 1:56Jennifer Davis: Boy, there's a fun name.
- 1:58Jennifer Davis: Take that one racing around that winery This feels like one of those low-key Redmond nights people accidentally discover and then keep going back to.
- 2:08Jennifer Davis: Doors open at 6:30, and the show starts at 7:00.
- 2:11Jennifer Davis: It'll be inside the wine lounge, and Dani Marie will be hosting, so the whole thing should move pretty fast without awkward dead spots between comics
- 2:20Dan Schulz: Yeah, you bet it's gonna move fast thanks to you know who
- 2:24Jennifer Davis: Who's that?
- 2:24Jennifer Davis: Oh, the Ferrari.
- 2:27Dan Schulz: That's right.
- 2:32Dan Schulz: When you're planning your next event, forget about all of those bland corporate catering companies.
- 2:38Dan Schulz: La Tia Angelina brings something special to your gathering.
- 2:41Dan Schulz: Brian and Amelia have been serving authentic Mexican cuisine for five years using recipes from Brian's parents, Angelina and Miguel, straight from Jalisco, Mexico.
- 2:53Dan Schulz: And here's the cool thing: Angelina still makes the salsas and sauces by hand herself.
- 3:00Dan Schulz: They've got their King County permit and can travel anywhere from Snohomish down to Tacoma for private events.
- 3:07Dan Schulz: They've catered apartment complexes like Skyline and Triangle in Redmond, corporate events, and private parties.
- 3:13Dan Schulz: It's just Brian, Amelia, and their five kids doing everything themselves with Angelina's homemade sauces tying the whole menu together.
- 3:21Dan Schulz: You know, your event deserves better than generic catering.
- 3:26Dan Schulz: That message brought to you by La Tia Angelina
- 3:30Jennifer Davis: So Ramrod getting canceled this summer apparently didn't slow anybody down over at Redmond Cycling Club.
- 3:37Jennifer Davis: They just announced a brand-new gravel ride called Get Mad, which stands for Gravel Enumclaw to Mowich in a Day, and the route sounds pretty intense even by Pacific Northwest cycling standards.
- 3:52Jennifer Davis: Riders will head through private forest land, climb restricted access roads, and finish at Mowich Lake inside Mount Rainier National Park.
- 4:02Jennifer Davis: Registration opened this week through the Redmond Cycling Club website, and the ride itself is scheduled for July 23rd.
- 4:09Jennifer Davis: This one will probably fill up fast
- 4:13Dan Schulz: There's a spring fishing gear swap and community cookout happening Sunday, May 31st from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Kakani Shelter inside Lake Sammamish State Park.
- 4:22Dan Schulz: And even if you barely fish, these community gear swap things are usually pretty fun.
- 4:28Dan Schulz: People bring old rods, tackle boxes, camping stuff, and random outdoor gear while mostly hanging around swapping stories with each other.
- 4:36Dan Schulz: They've also got food during the event, so it turns into more of a neighborhood cookout than some hardcore fishing expo.
- 4:43Dan Schulz: If your kids have been curious about fishing lately, this is a pretty cheap way to ease in- to it.
- 4:50Jennifer Davis: Okay, Dan, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 5:01Jennifer Davis: are you ready?
- 5:02Jennifer Davis: I've got a question for you, so play along
- 5:05Dan Schulz: All right, I'm gonna play...
- 5:06Dan Schulz: I'm playing along and you at home play along too
- 5:09Jennifer Davis: Local lore suggests that in 1935, a black bear wandered into downtown Redmond.
- 5:16Jennifer Davis: What happened?
- 5:17Jennifer Davis: A, the mayor shot it.
- 5:20Jennifer Davis: B, it was treed and stayed up there for three days.
- 5:24Jennifer Davis: C, it broke into Bill Brown's saloon.
- 5:27Dan Schulz: Do I know my answer?
- 5:30Jennifer Davis: or D, it became the town mascot
- 5:34Dan Schulz: I really want, I need to say he broke...
- 5:36Dan Schulz: Yeah, final answer.
- 5:37Dan Schulz: He broke into Bill Brown's saloon.
- 5:39Dan Schulz: Please let that be a thing
- 5:43Jennifer Davis: Well, the answer is actually kind of boring.
- 5:48Jennifer Davis: It's B, it was treed and stayed up there for three days
- 5:52Dan Schulz: Hey, great trivia question.
- 5:54Dan Schulz: Way to go.
- 5:55Dan Schulz: A bear came into town, climbed up a tree, and hung out on a tree for three days.
- 6:00Dan Schulz: What's the story?
- 6:01Jennifer Davis: Well, a black bear wandered into downtown Redmond in 1935 and climbed up a tree.
- 6:08Jennifer Davis: Townspeople, police, the sheriff, and deputies all tried to get it down, but the thing stayed up there for three full days.
- 6:16Jennifer Davis: And it was apparently such a big deal that it made national headlines.
- 6:20Dan Schulz: everyone, get a load of what's going on in Washington.
- 6:25Dan Schulz: A, a state full of mountains and trees and bears.
- 6:28Dan Schulz: You're never gonna guess what happened Oh my God, this trivia question was the worst one ever.
- 6:35Dan Schulz: We have to try harder, Jennifer."
- 6:38Jennifer Davis: We have to.
- 6:39Jennifer Davis: Yep.
- 6:43Jennifer Davis: Now here's something most homeowners don't think about.
- 6:47Jennifer Davis: You could have a water leak right now and not even know it.
- 6:51Jennifer Davis: Underground leaks don't show up like a burst pipe.
- 6:54Jennifer Davis: There's no water on the floor.
- 6:56Jennifer Davis: Your water bill just quietly creeps up month after month until one day you're paying double and wondering what the heck happened.
- 7:05Jennifer Davis: Simply Leak Detection finds those leaks without tearing up your yard.

- 7:51Dan Schulz: There is a rumor going around that somebody is thinking about opening a dedicated indoor pickleball facility somewhere in or around Redmond, and it makes sense because pickleball is really hot right now.
- 8:05Dan Schulz: We don't know who's behind it.
- 8:06Dan Schulz: We don't know if it's still in the early planning stages or what.
- 8:10Dan Schulz: But if this thing actually happens, I think it would get busy fast because, like, these are really popular.
- 8:16Dan Schulz: Pickleball is really a big thing.
