- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD I'm
- 0:07your host Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in Welcome back
- 0:16to Tabernacle talk. Today we are in Isaiah chapter
- 0:1914, Isaiah 14, and this is an awesome portion of scripture, if
- 0:26for no other reason than this is one of the portions of God's
- 0:31word that most clearly declares to us who the enemy of our soul
- 0:38is and times when human rulers and governments can become like
- 0:46Satan in the way that they operate.
- 0:48So if you would like to know, how can I not be like Satan, you
- 0:53have come to the right place. Today we're going to begin
- 0:57reading in Isaiah 14 and verse #1 we might get to verse 23
- 1:07today. We'll see where we're at on
- 1:09time. So Isaiah just prophesied about
- 1:14Babylon's destruction by the Lord, that though they would be
- 1:20the instrument of Judah's exile away from the land of promise,
- 1:25God would one day bring judgment on to Babylon for the way that
- 1:31they interacted with other nations and other people groups,
- 1:35and the death and devastation and oppression that they waged.
- 1:39And in that day there would be good news for Israel.
- 1:43We read this in verse #1 For Yahweh will have compassion on
- 1:47Jacob and will choose Israel again.
- 1:50He will settle them on their own land.
- 1:52The resident alien will join them and be united with the
- 1:57House of Jacob. That here there would be one
- 2:00people. It wouldn't just be, if you
- 2:02will, ethnic Israel. Instead, there would be a
- 2:05joining together of both this people of God ethnically and the
- 2:11people of God who volitionally choose God, which is, if you
- 2:15will, it's kind of the environment in which we find
- 2:19ourselves today, that those that are saved are not just those
- 2:23that have a certain ethnicity. It's not the ethnic people of
- 2:27God. It is those who by faith are
- 2:29joined to Jesus Christ, both Jew and Gentile, that the Jews are
- 2:35not cast off. Being a Jew does not preclude
- 2:37you from faith in Jesus and being a part of God's family,
- 2:41but instead we are now made one through Christ.
- 2:44Verse #2 The nations will escort Israel and bring it to its
- 2:49homeland. You can see this even in the
- 2:50time of Persia, the Medo Persian Empire, that as Nehemiah is
- 2:57leading a group back into the land from exile, he has given
- 3:03tremendous resources even from the Kingdom of Persia.
- 3:08It says then the House of Israel will possess them.
- 3:12Those that bring Israel to their homeland, they will possess them
- 3:17as male and female slaves in Yahweh's land.
- 3:20They will make captives of their captors and will rule over their
- 3:25oppressors. Again, this is a what was done
- 3:30to them now comes back on top of them.
- 3:33So then in verse #3 as Israel goes from a place of being
- 3:39subjected to being ruling, from being ones that are oppressed,
- 3:45now they are the rulers over others.
- 3:47Here's what we read in verse #3 when Yahweh gives you rest from
- 3:52your pain, torment, and the hard labor you were forced to do.
- 3:57This is actually a really important point that I've heard
- 4:00the Bible Project make several times.
- 4:03Whenever you read the Old Testament, remember that it is
- 4:07being written not from the powerful people in charge.
- 4:13It is written and collected and edited by those living under
- 4:19oppression, slavery, hardship here pain, torment, and forced
- 4:25hard labor. So when there is talk about
- 4:29rescue deliverance, when there's talk about justice that occurs,
- 4:34remember to filter it through there.
- 4:36It's not here's what I want to do to those under me.
- 4:41It is God will bring deliverance from those that are currently
- 4:45over me. So he says when Yahweh gives you
- 4:48rest from all of that, you will sing this song of contempt about
- 4:53the king of Babylon. So God through Isaiah here gives
- 4:57a script for here's the way that you can think poetically about
- 5:02what you went through. He says how the oppressor has
- 5:05quieted down and how the raging has become quiet.
- 5:11Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the
- 5:14rulers. It that is that ruler of the the
- 5:19the scepter of the rulers. It struck the peoples in anger
- 5:22with unceasing blows. It subdued the nations in rage
- 5:27with relentless persecution. The whole earth is calm and at
- 5:32rest. People shout with a ringing cry.
- 5:35Even the cypresses and the Cedars of Lebanon rejoice over
- 5:40you. Since you have been laid low, no
- 5:43lumberjack has come against us. So here everything from the
- 5:47trees to the nations are thankful that Babylon has fallen
- 5:51and it is no longer the oppressive jerk of a nation that
- 5:56it once was. Verse #9 The grave below is
- 5:59eager to greet your coming, stirring up the spirits of the
- 6:03departed for you, all the rulers of the earth, making all the
- 6:07kings of the nations rise from their Thrones, they all respond
- 6:11to you. So this is all of the deceased
- 6:14kings of the nations, the other nations.
- 6:17Now as they see the king of Babylon or Babylon's rule come
- 6:22to an end, and they say this from the grave, you too have
- 6:26become as weak as we are. You've become like us.
- 6:29Your splendor has been brought down to the grave along with the
- 6:33music of your harps. Maggots are spread out under you
- 6:36and worms cover you. So it's just, it's a horribly
- 6:40gross word picture. But there is joy here that those
- 6:45that harmed others, that oppressed them, that tormented
- 6:48them, now they are subjected to what they passed out to others.
- 6:54And then here's where it gets super, super interesting verse
- 6:58#12 So we've gone from Babylon and Babylon's king picturesque
- 7:04of the type of rule that Babylon had coming to an end.
- 7:08But then Isaiah kind of transfers over, and you'll see
- 7:12this as we read through. He transfers over to say this
- 7:18king of Babylon is like someone else that was once a ruler not
- 7:23on the land but in the sky. And the pride that Babylon
- 7:28operated with is just like the pride of this other person so
- 7:34that you can kind of map them on in the same song that you are
- 7:39singing about the fall of human rulers and authorities, you can
- 7:43sing it about the fall of this spiritual ruler and authority
- 7:48verse #12 shining morning star. Believe it is Latin that you
- 7:55would get the word here from Morningstar is Lucifer.
- 7:59So if you ever hear the name Lucifer, it just means
- 8:02Morningstar. So think of Venus.
- 8:06It's kind of your brightest nearby celestial body that you
- 8:11can still see even in the morning.
- 8:14It's kind of the last star of the day.
- 8:17The last light to go out before the day dawns is the morning
- 8:23star, or in Latin, Lucifer, shining morning star.
- 8:29How you have fallen from the heavens, you destroyer of
- 8:34nations. You have been cut down to the
- 8:37ground. OK, why?
- 8:39Why did this morning star this one?
- 8:41That was a heavenly creature. How did it destroy nations?
- 8:46How has it been cut down? Why was it cut down to the
- 8:48ground? Verse 13 you said to yourself, I
- 8:52will ascend to the heavens. I will set up my throne above
- 8:56the stars of God. I'm going to be the highest of
- 8:59all of the divine beings, the spiritual beings.
- 9:03I will set up my throne above the stars of God.
- 9:07I will sit on the mountain of the Gods assembly in the
- 9:11remotest parts of the north. This would be Mount Zaphone,
- 9:17which would be another one I think I've mentioned on here
- 9:20before when we went through Psalms.
- 9:21Mount Hermon. A Mount Zaphone would be another
- 9:25mountain, kind of like this. Lot of idolatry would take place
- 9:30there. And so over and over again in
- 9:32Scripture, the biblical authors take great care to clarify that
- 9:36it's not like, Oh yes, Baal is really powerful on Mount Hermon,
- 9:40but God's really powerful on Mount Zion.
- 9:43And so it's kind of these, you know, 2 mountains in fighting
- 9:46with one another. No, God is the one that is
- 9:49actually ultimately in control of everywhere and any place that
- 9:54there could be spiritual beings. God is greater and bigger and
- 9:59ultimately in charge over those locations.
- 10:03So here Satan says I'm going to be better than everyone.
- 10:05I'm going to be better than every other spiritual being.
- 10:08I'm going to be in there. That divine counsel is sometimes
- 10:13a way that that's phrased. It's the assembly of the
- 10:15spiritual beings. It's God's throne room.
- 10:19Satan says, I'm going to take this place.
- 10:22Verse 14, I will ascend above the highest clouds.
- 10:25I will make myself like the most high.
- 10:29I will be like God. The same exact temptation that
- 10:34then he placed on to Adam and Eve to say, Oh no, no, God's
- 10:38telling you not to eat this because he knows that in the day
- 10:40that you eat of it, you will be like him, knowing good and evil.
- 10:48But to this grandiose bragging of Lucifer, the morning star,
- 10:54God says, but you will be brought down to the grave into
- 10:58the deepest regions of the pit. And certainly as we read Luke
- 11:0312, Jesus says, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
- 11:07Or in Revelation 12, John talks about the good angels and
- 11:12Michael himself casting down Satan, falling like lightning
- 11:18down to the earth with great rage, knowing that he only has a
- 11:22little time. And then in John 20 Or sorry, in
- 11:25Revelation 20, John says that Michael will be the one to throw
- 11:30Lucifer, Satan the great dragon, into the bottomless pit.
- 11:37Verse #16 Those who see you will stare at you.
- 11:41They'll look closely at you. Is this the man who caused the
- 11:45earth to tremble, who shook the kingdoms, who turned the world
- 11:49into a wilderness, who destroyed its cities?
- 11:52And would not the release the prisoners to return home?
- 11:56Satan's goal has been the same as Babylon.
- 11:59So that wilderness that we looked at at the end of last
- 12:02episode, where no one can live because it's too dry, just
- 12:06everything is destroyed. There's no infrastructure,
- 12:08there's no way to easily live. This was Satan's goal to
- 12:12accomplish all across the earth, and it was the the Kingdom of
- 12:16Babylons goal as well. When empires, if you will, when
- 12:19they want to go scorched earth, that is a demonic influence that
- 12:24causes them to want to do that. That is the goal of the demons,
- 12:28to make it so that there is no life, so that God's command to
- 12:31go into all of the world, make it flourish, subdue all of
- 12:36creation, seek the good of humanity, multiply on the face
- 12:40of the earth. Satan and his demons want the
- 12:43opposite of that. And so here there is this dual
- 12:46goal of this is what Babylon wanted, and this is what Satan
- 12:50wanted. Verse #18 All the kings of the
- 12:53nations lie in splendor, each in his own tomb.
- 12:56But you, Satan, are thrown out without a grave, like a
- 13:01worthless branch, covered by those slain with the sword and
- 13:05dumped into a rocky pit like a trampled course.
- 13:08You will not join them in burial because you destroyed your land
- 13:12and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of evildoers will
- 13:16never be mentioned again. Prepare a place of slaughter for
- 13:19his sons. Because of the iniquity of their
- 13:22ancestors, they will never rise up to possess a land or fill the
- 13:26surface of the earth with cities.
- 13:30So here there is this declaration against Babylon and
- 13:33the type of rulers that they had, a declaration against
- 13:37Satan, this one who plunged all of humanity, all of the nations
- 13:42into evil and wrong and their eventual end.
- 13:46And then God says this in verse 22.
- 13:48I will rise up against them. This is the declaration of
- 13:51Yahweh of Heaven's armies. And I will cut off from Babylon
- 13:55her reputation, remnant, offspring, and posterity.
- 13:59This is Yahweh's declaration. I will make her a swampland and
- 14:03a region for herons, and I will sweep her away with the broom of
- 14:08destruction. This is the declaration of
- 14:12Yahweh of Heaven's armies. I think it's really funny there
- 14:16at the end of verse 23, I will sweep her away with the broom of
- 14:20destruction. Just sounds like a a very funny
- 14:24line. I got your destruction broom
- 14:26today. And what a joy that evil will
- 14:29one day find its end. There will come a day where
- 14:33everything that currently causes us, fear and panic and worry,
- 14:37heartbreak and tears, we will one day laugh and scorn at evil
- 14:43as it is buried in the pit forever.
- 14:47And what a joy that will be that happens because of the victory
- 14:51that Jesus won on Calvary, that the demons have been defanged
- 14:55and defeated through the cross and through the blood of Jesus.
- 14:59And so as a result, there is nothing now to fear, because we
- 15:03are safe in God, and greater is he that is in us than he that is
- 15:09in the world. World.
- 15:10So be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary, the
- 15:15devil, walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he
- 15:19may devour. Resist him, therefore, and be
- 15:22strong in the faith, knowing that the same temptations are
- 15:26conquered in your brothers and sisters around the world.
- 15:32Satan wants to tempt you so that you will reject God and God's
- 15:39way and fall under judgment and condemnation just like he is.
- 15:44He's the one that, if you will, you can think about little kids.
- 15:48If one little kid gets pranked and he wants other kids to get
- 15:54pranked just like he did. So if you have a couple
- 15:56siblings, you know, maybe someone walked through the door
- 15:59and a bucket of water, maybe not a bucket of water, but like a
- 16:02water balloon or something fell on him.
- 16:04He's like, oh man, you got me. Let's see if we can get our
- 16:07other sibling with the same prank.
- 16:09That's what Satan is doing, only with humanity's eternal souls
- 16:15that he wants others to experience that same doomsday
- 16:19that one day is coming for him. You do not have to fall to
- 16:23Satan's temptations. Instead, rely on God, humble
- 16:27yourself. Therefore, under the mighty hand
- 16:29of God, resist the devil and he will flee from you.
- 16:34Answer Satan with the word of God.
- 16:36That's what Jesus did all throughout his ministry.
- 16:39That is why God gave us the Word.
- 16:41David would tell us your word. I've hid in my heart so that I
- 16:45may not sin against you. You want to battle sin, battle
- 16:49temptation, Battle Satan with the sword of the Spirit, which
- 16:54is the word of God. Thank you so much for tuning
- 16:58into this episode. And I hope that it's an
- 17:01encouragement to you to realize the evil will end one day and
- 17:06that yes, human evil will end, but ultimate spiritual evil will
- 17:12one day and two. And I can't wait for that day
- 17:14where there's no more temptation, there's no more
- 17:17struggle, there's no more natural disasters, and instead
- 17:20we live in the light of Jesus's perfection forever and ever.
- 17:25What a day that will be. Thanks for tuning in, have a
- 17:27wonderful day.
