- 0:11Hello friends, It's Sean. Here it is Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 14th of January and it's great to have your company.
- 0:18Hope you're going well. I hope that this early time of
- 0:21the year is still full of freshness and opportunity and
- 0:27optimism as the year starts to unfold itself ahead of you.
- 0:31And today we have this continuing story unfolding
- 0:35itself ahead of us in First Kings.
- 0:37Ah, yesterday's reading was a glorious 1.
- 0:40So wonderful was that Kingdom. And of course nothing like that
- 0:44lasts. Because this book is not about
- 0:46the splendour of the kings. This book is about the failure
- 0:50of the kings. And so we've had this incredible
- 0:53beginning where Solomon has done such great work, and now,
- 0:57unfortunately, it all comes crashing down as Solomon gets
- 1:02trapped and goes the wrong way, turns his back on the God who
- 1:06has blessed him beyond belief. Ah, dear.
- 1:09And so thus begins the downfall of the kings of Israel.
- 1:13That sounds very Tolkienesque, doesn't it?
- 1:16And this is going to be a theme that will continue for the rest
- 1:20of the Book of Kings as we hear about just how much these kings
- 1:26try and fail to live up to the kingship that God had intended
- 1:30for his people. And in fact, the kingship that
- 1:32God still offers us today. Not just our Saviour, not just
- 1:36our friend, not just our God, but he is our King as well.
- 1:40So let us continue with this story to hear the juxtaposition
- 1:45between the way God would rule and the way people rule as we
- 1:49continue reading the story in First Kings Chapter 11.
- 2:03Now King Solomon loved many foreign women.
- 2:07Besides Pharaoh's daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon,
- 2:11Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.
- 2:15The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel You must
- 2:19not marry them because they will turn your heart to their gods.
- 2:23Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.
- 2:26He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines, and in fact,
- 2:33they did turn his heart away from the Lord.
- 2:36In Solomon's old age, they turned his heart to worship
- 2:40other gods. Instead of being completely
- 2:42faithful to the Lord his God, as his father David had been,
- 2:47Solomon worshipped Ashtereth, the goddess of the Sedonians,
- 2:52and Molech, the detestable God of the Ammonites.
- 2:56In this way, Solomon did what was evil in the Lord's sight.
- 3:00He refused to follow the Lord completely, as his father David
- 3:04had done on the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem.
- 3:07He even built a Pagan shrine for Kimosh, the detestable God of
- 3:12Moab, and another for Molech, the detestable God of the
- 3:16Ammonites. Solomon built such shrines for
- 3:20all his foreign wives to use for burning incense and sacrificing
- 3:24to their gods. The Lord was very angry with
- 3:28Solomon, for his heart had turned away from the Lord, the
- 3:32God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
- 3:36He had warned Solomon specifically about worshipping
- 3:39other gods. But Solomon did not listen to
- 3:42the Lord's command. So now the Lord said to him,
- 3:46Since you have not kept my command and have disobeyed my
- 3:50decrees, I will surely tear the Kingdom away from you and give
- 3:56it to one of your servants. But for the sake of your father
- 3:59David, I will not do this while you are still alive.
- 4:04I will take the Kingdom away from your son, and Even so, I
- 4:09will not take away the entire Kingdom.
- 4:11I will let him be king of one tribe for the sake of my servant
- 4:16David, and for the sake of Jerusalem, my chosen city.
- 4:22Then the Lord raised up Hedad the Edomite, a member of Edom's
- 4:26royal family, to be Solomon's adversary.
- 4:29Years before David had defeated Edom, Joab, his army commander,
- 4:34had stayed to bury some of the Israelite soldiers who had died
- 4:37in battle. While there they killed every
- 4:40male in Edom Joab and the army of Israel had stayed there for
- 4:45six months, killing them. But Hedad and a few of his
- 4:48father's royal officials escaped and headed for Egypt.
- 4:52Hedad was just a boy at the time.
- 4:55They set out for Midian and went to Prahran, where others joined
- 4:59them. Then they travelled to Egypt and
- 5:01went to Pharaoh, who gave them home, food and some land.
- 5:05Pharaoh grew very fond of Hedad, and he gave him his wife's
- 5:09sister in marriage, the sister of Queen Tapanese.
- 5:14She bore him a son named Genobath.
- 5:16Tapanese raised him in Pharaoh's palace among Pharaoh's own sons.
- 5:22When the news reached Haddad in Egypt that David and his
- 5:25commander Joab were both dead, he said to Pharaoh, Let me
- 5:30return to my own country. Why?
- 5:33Pharaoh asked him. What do you lack here that makes
- 5:36you want to go home? Nothing, he replied.
- 5:39But Even so, please let me return home.
- 5:43God also raised up Rizon, son of Eliada, as Solomon's adversary.
- 5:48Rizon had fled from his master, King Hadadisa of Joba, and had
- 5:53become the leader of a gang of rebels.
- 5:56After David conquered Hadadisa, Rizon and his Med fled to
- 6:00Damascus, where he became king. Rezon was Israel's bitter
- 6:05adversary for the rest of Solomon's reign, and he made
- 6:09trouble just as Hedad did. Rezon hated Israel intensely and
- 6:14continued to reign in Iran. Another rebel leader was
- 6:19Jeroboam, son of Nebat, one of Solomon's own officials.
- 6:23He came from the town of Zeradah in Ephraim, and his mother was
- 6:28Zerua, a widow. This is the story behind his
- 6:32rebellion. Solomon was rebuilding the
- 6:35supporting terraces and repairing the walls of the city
- 6:38of his father David. Jeroboam was a very capable
- 6:41young man, and when Solomon saw how industrious he was, he put
- 6:45him in charge of the labour force from the tribes of Ephraim
- 6:48and Manasseh, the descendants of Joseph.
- 6:52One day, as Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah
- 6:56from Shiloh met him along the way.
- 6:59Ahijah was wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone in a
- 7:02field, and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and
- 7:06tore it into 12 pieces. Then he said to Jeroboam, take
- 7:10ten of these pieces, for this is what the Lord the God of Israel
- 7:15says. I am about to tear the Kingdom
- 7:18from the hand of Solomon, and I will give 10 of the tribes to
- 7:21you. But I will leave him one tribe,
- 7:24for the sake of my servant David, and for the sake of
- 7:27Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
- 7:31For Solomon has abandoned me and worshipped Ashtereth the goddess
- 7:36of the Sedonians, Kermosch the God of Moab, and Morlech, the
- 7:41God of the Ammonites. He has not followed my ways and
- 7:46done what is pleasing in my sight.
- 7:48He has not obeyed my decrees and regulations as David his father
- 7:53did. But I will not take the entire
- 7:56Kingdom from Solomon at this time, for the sake of my servant
- 7:59David, the one whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and
- 8:04decrees. I will keep Solomon as leader
- 8:07for the rest of his life. But I will take the Kingdom away
- 8:10from his son and give 10 of the tribes to you.
- 8:14His son will have one tribe, so that the descendants of David,
- 8:18my servant, will continue to reign, shining like a lamp in
- 8:22Jerusalem, the city I have chosen to be the place for my
- 8:26name. And I will place you on the
- 8:29throne of Israel, and you will rule over all that your heart
- 8:33desires. If you listen to what I tell you
- 8:36and follow my ways and do whatever I consider to be right,
- 8:41and if you obey my decrees and commands, as my servant David
- 8:45did, then I will always be with you.
- 8:48I will establish an enduring dynasty for you, as I did for
- 8:52David, and I will give Israel to you.
- 8:56Because of Solomon's sin, I will punish the descendants of David,
- 9:00though not forever. Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam,
- 9:05but he fled to King Shishak of Egypt and stayed there until
- 9:09Solomon died. The rest of the events of
- 9:13Solomon's reign, including all his deeds and his wisdom, are
- 9:17recorded in the Book of the Acts of Solomon.
- 9:20Solomon ruled in Jerusalem over all Israel for 40 years.
- 9:26When he died, he was buried in the city of David, named for his
- 9:30father. Then his son Rehoboam became the
- 9:34next king, our Lord. We hear in this chapter just how
- 9:48much you desire our worship of you and you alone, our Lord,
- 9:54Whatever it is that would steal our hearts from you.
- 9:57Whatever it is that would draw our attention and our worship
- 10:01away from you, Lord, humble those things.
- 10:06Take away their plinth, take away their footholds so that
- 10:09only you remain in our hearts as Lord of all.
- 10:13Lord, whatever those things seem that tantalise us, that make us
- 10:18chase them instead of You, Lord, we put them down and pray that
- 10:23You alone be Lord of our hearts. We are stubborn people Lord, and
- 10:29other things rise up again and again and seems so important to
- 10:33our human minds and hearts. But we pray that you alone would
- 10:40be Lord of our hearts and Lord of our lives.
- 10:43So we recommit ourselves to you today and we place your
- 10:47priorities above all else. Ah, because we love you, and we
- 10:51worship you because you are the King of all and the Lord of us.
- 11:00Ah, we lift you up, and we praise you, and we pray all of
- 11:03these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.
