- 0:09Speaker 1: Sports Talk Jay on with us. Jay, we just talked
- 0:11Speaker 1: about this on your show, but I want to get
- 0:12Speaker 1: your take on it too. Do you think there's a
- 0:16Speaker 1: path back for Faison to come back and be what
- 0:21Speaker 1: the coaching staff thought he would be before this season?
- 0:24Speaker 1: I want to talk about Arkansas too here in just
- 0:26Speaker 1: a moment, but Do you think he can get back
- 0:28Speaker 1: to normal-ish? How much does the injury impact things? Where
- 0:32Speaker 1: are you on him?
- 0:33Speaker 2: This is a tough one because it's so hard to
- 0:37Speaker 2: judge what somebody's going to do as a true freshman.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, there's absolutely a path back for him.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I don't think there's any question because of that, because
- 0:46Speaker 2: he's only 18. Because I watched Peyton Manning struggle as
- 0:50Speaker 2: a freshman. I mean, big time, he was not any
- 0:53Speaker 2: type of phenom out there whatsoever. His stats weren't great.
- 0:57Speaker 2: And he was thrown in there. He was the third
- 0:59Speaker 2: string guy after we had our starter got hurt and
- 1:03Speaker 2: then the backup. So, yeah, I think there's a path back.
- 1:06Speaker 2: But we're already into a nine SEC schedule, nine games,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and there's no break in there to where, you know,
- 1:14Speaker 2: if there was an issue, you could put him in
- 1:16Speaker 2: against a Kennesaw State or a team like that where
- 1:19Speaker 2: you're like, okay, he can really just relax and do
- 1:22Speaker 2: his thing. He's going to have guys coming at him
- 1:24Speaker 2: the entire time. And it looked to me like George,
- 1:28Speaker 2: who's a second-year guy, which is a big difference. Keelan
- 1:31Speaker 2: Russell's a second-year guy. He's also a redshirt freshman. Look
- 1:35Speaker 2: how he's playing. You need to see that for a year.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You know, it's so hard to start as a true
- 1:42Speaker 2: freshman in the SEC. Nobody does it. And if they do,
- 1:45Speaker 2: it's usually a struggle.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think the injury– like I talked about
- 1:49Speaker 1: this on your show, but like just the injury, being
- 1:51Speaker 1: banged up, the confidence– evaporating because of what Colin Simmons
- 1:56Speaker 1: and those guys did up front it was huge um
- 1:59Speaker 1: when you look at this Arkansas game it's an opponent
- 2:01Speaker 1: that Tennessee should now going on the road in the
- 2:04Speaker 1: SEC is always a little bit different and you do
- 2:06Speaker 1: think about hey they came off of what certainly for
- 2:09Speaker 1: Bishop was an emotional win against Golish and um you
- 2:13Speaker 1: know you know your quarterback play is a little bit
- 2:15Speaker 1: limited so I don't think you want to take Arkansas
- 2:18Speaker 1: for granted but Man, you saw what Texas A & M,
- 2:21Speaker 1: who's been up and down, did to them last week.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I think this is a really good spot for Tennessee
- 2:25Speaker 1: to have to play an undermatched opponent. But what is
- 2:29Speaker 1: the plan of attack? Is it kind of like maybe
- 2:32Speaker 1: we're just going to lean on Bishop and ride him
- 2:33Speaker 1: until the wheels fall off? Or do you think they
- 2:35Speaker 1: try and get a little bit more of a passing
- 2:38Speaker 1: game going with George this week because of the opponent?
- 2:41Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you exactly what they're going to do.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I've been watching Josh Heupel for a long time. He's
- 2:47Speaker 2: going to do exactly what he did in the second
- 2:49Speaker 2: half in that last ball game. He's going to throw
- 2:53Speaker 2: it probably 20 times. Let's just assume that George is
- 2:58Speaker 2: the quarterback the entire game. He's going to probably throw
- 3:00Speaker 2: it 20 times. He's going to run it about 60%
- 3:03Speaker 2: to 65% of the time. He's going to lean on
- 3:06Speaker 2: Bishop and the other running backs and that offensive line.
- 3:09Speaker 2: He's going to throw it enough to keep that defense
- 3:12Speaker 2: of Arkansas's honest because he knows he's better than Arkansas.
- 3:15Speaker 2: He knows he can match up with them man on
- 3:18Speaker 2: man and probably get the better of them. And hopefully,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I don't think the fans and the crowd is going
- 3:28Speaker 2: to be near the issue that they have been in
- 3:30Speaker 2: the past at Arkansas. Like we've gone there and failed
- 3:34Speaker 2: because of various reasons. And a lot of times their
- 3:37Speaker 2: crowd's been a big part of it. They're so down
- 3:39Speaker 2: on Arkansas right now because of the lack of spending
- 3:42Speaker 2: and their lack of success. And Ryan Silverfield coming into
- 3:46Speaker 2: really a financial mess. Yeah. That the crowd, I mean,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you've seen it. I mean, they're like boycotting. They're wearing
- 3:54Speaker 2: bags on their heads. They're doing all that. And when
- 3:56Speaker 2: a fan base gets that dejected, the only people that
- 4:00Speaker 2: are going to be in there are going to be
- 4:01Speaker 2: the really loyal folks, and they can't be as loud
- 4:04Speaker 2: if you don't have all the casuals with you. And
- 4:06Speaker 2: then Tennessee's going to show up. There'll be quite a
- 4:10Speaker 2: few Tennessee fans in that– in that stadium because the
- 4:14Speaker 2: tickets are going to be available and we travel great.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So yeah, that's what I would do. And I think
- 4:20Speaker 2: that's exactly what Josh Heupel will do.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Just before we go on, I will give some love
- 4:24Speaker 1: to our new top 25 poll. A lot of you
- 4:27Speaker 1: are like me and you hate the AP poll. So
- 4:30Speaker 1: I created a better one that you can log in
- 4:32Speaker 1: right now and for free, go create your own top
- 4:36Speaker 1: 25 poll. I'm setting up reminders. I'm working on, aggregating
- 4:41Speaker 1: national college football analysts that we all know and love
- 4:43Speaker 1: and respect, or maybe even hate just to get theirs
- 4:46Speaker 1: in there as well. It's super slick. The user interface
- 4:50Speaker 1: is really, really easy to use. You log in one
- 4:52Speaker 1: time with your Google account and you are all set.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I'm not going to spam your email. I'm not trying
- 4:57Speaker 1: to sell you anything. There's no ads on here. If
- 5:00Speaker 1: somebody would like to put an ad on there, please
- 5:01Speaker 1: let me know. But it's just a place where we
- 5:03Speaker 1: can go collectively as fans vote on the poll. the
- 5:08Speaker 1: top 25 in college football. We're going to work on
- 5:10Speaker 1: a college football playoff one once we get closer to November,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but go check this out. It's cfatop25. com. Link is in
- 5:18Speaker 1: the description. I'll pin the comment. Go check it out
- 5:20Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, the backup situation is interesting. You asked
- 5:26Speaker 1: me about this, but I kind of want to get
- 5:28Speaker 1: your take on it as well. If you're Josh Eipel,
- 5:32Speaker 1: are you putting Brandon in once this league gets comfortable,
- 5:35Speaker 1: or are you putting Staub in?
- 5:37Speaker 2: You know, that's a good thing to talk about. It's
- 5:40Speaker 2: a tough argument. If he's legitimately injured, which he may
- 5:43Speaker 2: very well be, he may be dealing with a shoulder
- 5:46Speaker 2: issue that it may be, you know what, you need
- 5:48Speaker 2: to sit out until you're 100% and also kind of
- 5:52Speaker 2: rest his mind a little bit because that would be
- 5:56Speaker 2: really stressful and it would be hard on your psyche
- 6:00Speaker 2: to get sacked 13 times in a game and a
- 6:02Speaker 2: half and then you watch another guy go in there
- 6:05Speaker 2: and it's like, hey, this is doable. Okay. Kid went
- 6:08Speaker 2: eight for 10, didn't get sacked a single time and
- 6:11Speaker 2: he was getting the ball out on time. And, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 2: Faison's a smart guy. He looked at that and went,
- 6:16Speaker 2: this is totally doable. Why didn't I do that? You know,
- 6:19Speaker 2: this is, and he's going to see that and he's
- 6:21Speaker 2: going to learn from it. And that's why you usually
- 6:25Speaker 2: don't start it. You never start a true freshman. It's
- 6:27Speaker 2: such a risky thing to do because they haven't seen
- 6:30Speaker 2: all that. They've just not seen the speed and all
- 6:32Speaker 2: the things that are going on with it. If it's
- 6:35Speaker 2: an injury, I'm sitting him out. I'm going to put
- 6:38Speaker 2: the stop kid in if need be or if there's
- 6:40Speaker 2: an opportunity. Get him some reps. Get him ready because
- 6:43Speaker 2: he could be a sprained ankle away from being in
- 6:46Speaker 2: there and being your starter. And he's a guy that
- 6:48Speaker 2: needs some reps too. He's a quality quarterback. I never
- 6:52Speaker 2: gave him a lot of credit because I was mad
- 6:55Speaker 2: that we didn't bring in Sam Levitt. We didn't bring
- 6:57Speaker 2: in Hoover. We didn't bring in Klandria. All three were available.
- 7:02Speaker 2: We didn't go after him or Lane came up here
- 7:04Speaker 2: and took Levitt from us. And then I am happy
- 7:07Speaker 2: we went after Joey. I was happy with that, but
- 7:09Speaker 2: I was, I never gave this kid a chance because
- 7:12Speaker 2: he wasn't Sam Levitt or one of those other guys.
- 7:15Speaker 2: He might be a legitimate, solid player for us in
- 7:18Speaker 2: a Tennessee offense where you're going to run the ball
- 7:20Speaker 2: a lot.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah. I, as impressed as I have been with Bishop
- 7:26Speaker 1: and Morris and even phase on early in the year, um,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I don't know that any of us expected Tennessee to
- 7:33Speaker 1: go from like the worst defense in the conference to legitimately.
- 7:39Speaker 1: When I think about the good defenses in this conference,
- 7:41Speaker 1: I think about Texas. I think about Oklahoma. They're a
- 7:44Speaker 1: little bit discounted because they do have a great defense,
- 7:48Speaker 1: but the offense is just so pedestrian. I do think
- 7:50Speaker 1: about Georgia as always. I think Tennessee's right up there
- 7:54Speaker 1: at top four ish, five ish somewhere in this conference.
- 7:58Speaker 1: What he has done, when you think about the injuries
- 8:03Speaker 1: and where they were last year, is remarkable. Like, I
- 8:07Speaker 1: don't know if there's a better... Is there a better
- 8:11Speaker 1: turnaround for any unit that was just so bad last
- 8:15Speaker 1: year to be so good this year? I can't say
- 8:18Speaker 1: enough good things about Jim Knowles and what he's done
- 8:20Speaker 1: with this defense.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's... I actually did a show about him yesterday.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Is he the off-season hire of the year?
- 8:29Speaker 1: He might be.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they're third in the SEC right now
- 8:32Speaker 2: in scoring defense. Here's the thing that is the shocker.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And this, you've got to give a ton of credit
- 8:38Speaker 2: to Jim Knowles for this. They are leading in sacks
- 8:42Speaker 2: in the entire country. They're number one in FBS in sacks.
- 8:46Speaker 2: And you're going, this was our big concern. We didn't
- 8:49Speaker 2: get Chaz Coleman. That whole thing blew up in our face.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And we're going, who is going to put pressure on
- 8:54Speaker 2: the quarterback? They're going to be able to sit back
- 8:55Speaker 2: there all day. And all of a sudden we're like
- 8:59Speaker 2: sacking them like crazy. And we look like Texas out there.
- 9:02Speaker 2: So I don't, that just shows you how important a
- 9:06Speaker 2: defensive coordinator is. And this guy's one, he's been fantastic
- 9:10Speaker 2: everywhere he's been. So I guess I shouldn't be totally,
- 9:12Speaker 2: it's just the turnaround so quick. And then I also
- 9:15Speaker 2: wonder if, if our strength coach hasn't played a role
- 9:19Speaker 2: in this too, because Tennessee seems a lot tougher to
- 9:22Speaker 2: me mentally and physically than they were last year.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you worry at all with this Arkansas game?
- 9:29Speaker 1: And I'm not trying to like hype up a game
- 9:30Speaker 1: that is not supposed to be really, really good, but
- 9:35Speaker 1: do you worry a little bit about, you know, going
- 9:37Speaker 1: on the road, emotional win against Auburn, Bama the next week,
- 9:41Speaker 1: like all those things outside of what will actually happen
- 9:44Speaker 1: on the field, kind of creeping in here, the quarterback
- 9:46Speaker 1: questions and that controversy, like, Is this kind of a
- 9:50Speaker 1: letdown spot potentially for Tennessee based on what's happened, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 1: Auburn before, Bama after, all those other things?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Well, Heupel's going to hammer that home like you cannot believe.
- 10:02Speaker 2: He's going to go into this game like it's for
- 10:04Speaker 2: the national title as far as what they're going to
- 10:07Speaker 2: hear from him because he fears that in a major way.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And he knows this is an SEC team and they
- 10:14Speaker 2: could get, you know, a spark and actually have something
- 10:18Speaker 2: to cheer on. after such a terrible start of the
- 10:21Speaker 2: year and everybody being upset and see Ryan Silverfield, it's
- 10:25Speaker 2: not like he's on the chopping block or anything, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 2: he's looking for any spark and they're at home. So
- 10:32Speaker 2: it's not like, you know, Tennessee's only had one road
- 10:35Speaker 2: game so far. So yeah, I mean, you should never
- 10:39Speaker 2: ever look past an sec team on the, on the road.
- 10:42Speaker 2: You shouldn't, if you do that, you're, you're crazy.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I agree. I think it's, you're, you always
- 10:50Speaker 1: worry about it because you see what teams do when
- 10:52Speaker 1: they go on the road. You see what happens when
- 10:57Speaker 1: Florida goes on the road, Ole Miss goes on the road,
- 10:59Speaker 1: LSU goes on the road, you know, like this, these
- 11:02Speaker 1: are big time teams that have dropped. And I think you,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you do worry about that. You do wonder about that
- 11:08Speaker 1: a little bit. So I agree with you as well,
- 11:12Speaker 1: that Josh will not let them do that. This is
- 11:14Speaker 1: a place that was it. Two years ago, was it
- 11:17Speaker 1: three years ago, that Tennessee found a way to lose
- 11:19Speaker 1: a game at Arkansas? Just kind of an inexplicable loss
- 11:22Speaker 1: that should not have happened. I think that also bodes
- 11:24Speaker 1: well for Tennessee, too. There might be teams that sneak
- 11:28Speaker 1: up and get you that you shouldn't lose to. I
- 11:30Speaker 1: would think this one is one that Josh won't let
- 11:32Speaker 1: it happen against.
- 11:34Speaker 2: There's no way. Well, if they do, it won't be
- 11:37Speaker 2: because Josh didn't wear them out. I've watched this guy
- 11:41Speaker 2: for six years. He does not look past teams. He's
- 11:45Speaker 2: just one of those guys that he knows how quickly
- 11:48Speaker 2: something can get out of hand on the road. He
- 11:50Speaker 2: understands it. And he's going to hammer that home. He's
- 11:53Speaker 2: going to remind me. And some of the guys that
- 11:55Speaker 2: are on this team will still be on this team
- 11:57Speaker 2: that experienced that. I think the biggest thing that Tennessee's
- 12:01Speaker 2: got going for him is they've got a quarterback. They're
- 12:03Speaker 2: not really sure of. So they're going to go out
- 12:05Speaker 2: there and play for him. They want him to succeed
- 12:08Speaker 2: just like they did phase on that. That's, I can
- 12:11Speaker 2: tell that's the way this team is because they celebrated
- 12:13Speaker 2: him big time for his second half. And by the way,
- 12:16Speaker 2: even though he only threw the ball 10 times, the coach,
- 12:20Speaker 2: Alex Golish, and their best linebacker said that dude made
- 12:24Speaker 2: an impact and he was a problem for us. He
- 12:27Speaker 2: was seeing the routes, he was hitting the guys, and
- 12:30Speaker 2: he was making the correct choices. And he said he
- 12:32Speaker 2: was a problem for us. And that told me a
- 12:35Speaker 2: lot that they both said that.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Do you even know how to predict a score in
- 12:42Speaker 1: a game like this? Well, I guess with the quarterback questions,
- 12:44Speaker 1: it could be a little lower scoring than you think,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but what's your score on this one?
- 12:49Speaker 2: This feels like 27 to 17-ish type of game. I
- 12:55Speaker 2: don't think we'll blow them out. I just don't because
- 12:59Speaker 2: we're on the road and we've got a quarterback we're
- 13:01Speaker 2: not totally confident in, and I think we're going to
- 13:04Speaker 2: run the ball and try to shorten the game, which
- 13:06Speaker 2: is rare for us. Normally we do the opposite. but
- 13:10Speaker 2: I think Arkansas will, they'll try to, they're at home.
- 13:12Speaker 2: They don't want to get embarrassed. Those guys are going
- 13:14Speaker 2: to try to play. So 27, 17 would be my guess.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be, there's not going
- 13:20Speaker 2: to be style points. I do not expect style points.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Yeah. I, I think the way that this turns into
- 13:26Speaker 1: kind of a route is if Bishop's able to break
- 13:29Speaker 1: a couple of long ones and you get up early
- 13:31Speaker 1: and the defense kind of locks in, I could, I
- 13:33Speaker 1: could see it going that way, but 27, 17, you
- 13:34Speaker 1: heard it first here on a sec football addiction from
- 13:38Speaker 1: sports talk J. So, If he's wrong, go to his
- 13:40Speaker 1: YouTube and comment that afterwards, not mine. Jay, I appreciate
