Last time we spoke about Operation Brazil. In October 1942, as Germany and the Soviet Union clashed across the frozen vastness of the Eastern Front, Operation Brazil epitomized the chaos of warfare. The Luftwaffe assembled a small flotilla to capture Sukho Island's coastal guns, but fog and navigational errors sent them astray. During their hasty withdrawal, they encountered two Soviet submarine chasers whose crews, seeing only shadowy silhouettes, mistook the entire Axis force for the enemy they'd been hunting.
