- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good Morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist.
- 0:09And also happened to be. A farmer.
- 0:11This is my chicken coop and I come out here.
- 0:13Every day to record a podcast to teach distinctions.
- 0:17Possibilities, new ways of thinking and just bring some joy
- 0:20into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. Let's talk about how we
- 0:32communicate overall. So communication is a complex
- 0:37subject to go through because it we want to believe it's like
- 0:40words and it's simple, but it's way beyond words.
- 0:44It's yes, including words, but it's how you say the words.
- 0:48It's the energy and the inflection that go into it.
- 0:52It's the tonality, it's the the accentuation of it.
- 0:56It's also a lot about body language and how it's delivered.
- 1:00So I can say a phrase to somebody as simple and as lovely
- 1:05as I love you and I can say it, I love you and just sounds like
- 1:09words. Or I can say I love you and then
- 1:12all of a sudden they say, wow, that is really accentuated.
- 1:15I can go I love you and then that really puts the point
- 1:20across. Or I can be like love you and it
- 1:24sounds like I could care less about them.
- 1:26Now look at how those small, little tiny changes in that one
- 1:31example of three words let you see the difference in how that
- 1:36was coming across. I mean, just stop and think
- 1:38about that. So the reason this is important
- 1:42is because so often we as people get caught up in whatever we're
- 1:46doing and we don't actually pause and collect ourselves
- 1:50before words come out of our mouths.
- 1:52And often, especially when I'm doing sessions with couples or
- 1:56with teams, I see this happen where you can actually see
- 2:00someone thinking about their comeback before they actually
- 2:05like let it come out of their mouth.
- 2:07They're formulating it. So they're not, they're not
- 2:10listening. That's the first thing that's an
- 2:12indication of you're not listening.
- 2:13What you're really doing is preparing your answer.
- 2:16You're, you're getting prepped. You're ready to react, but
- 2:19you're not listening fully because the way our brains work,
- 2:22we have plenty of time in that nanosecond to get our answer
- 2:28ready. We don't need to to wait on.
- 2:31We need to formulate something the whole time.
- 2:33We can sit and wait, and we can wait until the person is done
- 2:37and say OK and take a pause. It's OK to let that pause hang
- 2:43out there in the air. Actually, it's it's very healthy
- 2:46to let the paws hang out there in the air because it gives your
- 2:50brain a chance to formulate. It gives you a chance to fully
- 2:53listen and it allows the other person to slow down as well.
- 2:57But why is this so important this time of the year?
- 3:00Well, often this is, you know, everyone loves to say that this
- 3:03is the magical time of the year. Whatever holiday you celebrate,
- 3:06we've got lots of them and they're stacked on top of each
- 3:09other and everybody is tending to be in a pretty decent mood.
- 3:14So lucky us, we could really take advantage of that and say,
- 3:19wow, this is such a great time of the year.
- 3:21I'm going to start, you know, talking to more people,
- 3:23connecting with more people. Now that's the bonus side.
- 3:26The detraction of all of this is the fact that everybody is super
- 3:30busy because typically we're trying to get ready for time
- 3:34off, which would be over the holidays.
- 3:36Typically we're trying to get things in order so that we can
- 3:40enjoy the holiday, whether it's preparing the cooking, buying
- 3:43presents, getting going to parties.
- 3:46So there's a lot of hurry, hurry, hurry, rush, rush, rush.
- 3:49And because of that, people tend to have shorter patience.
- 3:54Now, the closer we get to the holiday that you celebrate, the
- 3:58nicer we tend to be. So you see, the complexities of
- 4:01all of this really tend to pile in and concentrate this time of
- 4:07year. So it is imperative, imperative
- 4:10that you slow your pace down right now.
- 4:13You take a deep breath because rushing doesn't help you get
- 4:16things done quickly. Planning helps you get things
- 4:18done quickly. Being paced helps you get things
- 4:21done quickly. And doing one thing at a time
- 4:24helps you get things done quickly.
- 4:26Not rushing. Rushing is the worst thing that
- 4:29you can do. And you have to wire it into
- 4:32your head right now that I have more than enough time.
- 4:35Keep telling yourself, let the dialogue in your head be I have
- 4:39more than enough time. I have more than enough time
- 4:41because then you don't feel rushed.
- 4:43You actually complete a task when you start it, which is just
- 4:47so annoying because when you're rushing, you don't complete the
- 4:49task and then you have to go back and do the task.
- 4:51And it's just irritating, at least it is to me.
- 4:55So take a moment, pause, plan what you're saying, plan how
- 4:59you're going to do it. Plan your asks of people, plan
- 5:03the way you're going to communicate in the day.
- 5:06Get up and be like, no, I am so on fire.
- 5:09I am connected. And remember, as of yesterday's
- 5:12podcast, you are not doing things alone.
- 5:15You are doing things to get. You are connected.
- 5:18You are a connected being. So if you really believe that,
- 5:21my friends, then you have to show up that way and know you've
- 5:24got support. Even if you can't physically see
- 5:27it, you can feel it. So communication, communication,
- 5:30communication. It's not just about the words,
- 5:33it's how you say, how you deliver your body language, all
- 5:35of it. So own it and make somebody know
- 5:39that when you're talking to them, you matter because you're
- 5:40100% present. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:43you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:46Bye.
