- 0:00Speaker: What's up everyone? Welcome to the Refrigeration Mentor Podcast. Super glad you're here listening. Hopefully you are enjoying your day wherever you're at in the world. If you're out working and servicing customers, I, I hope you're crushing it. You know this, this thing that we do, refrigeration, commercial refrigeration.
- 0:01Yes, if you're working on just like commercial refrigeration, if you're working on supermarket or market refrigeration, industrial refrigeration warehouse, we are the ones that are helping people eat. People survive, have the luxury of cold food and food lasting longer. So just remember the work that you do is so important, and it's not always easy.
- 0:02You know, even a year ago when I started talking and doing webinars and AI and teaching how to use ai I really see more of an adoption of it in our industry, which is so, so. Cool to see. And one of the things that it can really do is just really help both on the, the learning side, the technical side, and the support side.
- 0:03It's gonna be able to help you more. And this is, this is what I, I talk about in, in that training session is that it's not perfect. You do need to understand refrigeration. You just, you, you're not. Gonna be able to come in and just be able to start troubleshooting refrigeration system if you do not know a refrigeration system or even taking the information.
- 0:04And if you're out there today and you're working or you're driving home, or you're just listening. I'd love to find out or hear if you're using this stuff, reach out, ? Go to the website, go to the contact page and, and just hit, hit us up at Refrigeration. Mentor, we love hearing from you and it's, it's awesome to see the more technicians I meet the more that I see technicians enjoying refrigeration.
- 0:05It's the, it's the customers or it's the, the, the amount of hours that they have. Some of it is technical but it all depends on where they're at in their career. Some, some are like, it's what stresses me is the terminology. You know, I've been doing this, just figuring it out as I go and when I'm talking to someone or talking to an expert, it's an.
- 0:06And I've gone through multiple and they say they're, they don't have any work. And then when I talk with the contractors, they're like, they're swamped. Or when I talk to the technicians from certain companies that they look for and they went for. They're like, we're just busy all the time. We're swamped.
- 0:07This is kind of what I'm seeing now. I've even heard of someone's like, oh, well they do a great job training. We'll let them train 'em, and then when they're ready they can come to our company. I'm like, what? That is not the stuff that I want to be hearing. I want to be hearing. Yeah. We're, we're trying to invest in all different sides of the business.
- 0:08You have to invest in you. Minimum of 10% of your wage should be going into investing in you. That's what it should, that's what you know. That's the, that's the bare minimum, 10%. So if you make a hundred grand a year and just say you take home 70 grand, that you should be putting 7,000 into, into. Into training, and if not even half of that 5%, $3,500 a year should be invested in your knowledge.
- 0:09They go and they get drunk the whole time, or they're partying. Like, I know I've, I've been there in the past, ? So I understand. But companies wanna invest in most, and there's a lot of companies that are willing to invest in you. So you wanna find those companies as well. Find out what those companies and what are you gonna do to get into those trainings?
- 0:10And this is free right now. This is free. But honestly, getting into different paid programs is gonna structured where you, you gotta go or you gotta watch or you gotta learn, or you gotta listen or you gotta apply that knowledge. Okay? And like I said, it could be a speed reading course. Because that, that's something that's so, so important and, and I think how I'm getting better at stuff is I can read faster.
- 0:11Same thing. Oh, I, I'm, I hear this all the time. I used to say, oh, I'm no good with names. Well, is that anybody ever taught you how to remember somebody's name? Like when I'm talking to someone? I was at a, a party last, a Halloween party a few weeks ago. And. I, I came into the thing and I, there was five or six people around the table, so I introduced myself and asked their name, and then I, each of them, I said their name like three or four times, like when I was asking them a question.
- 0:12You go, somebody remembers your name, they see your face. Oh, I remember your face, but I don't remember your name. It's just they didn't practice the name. They remember looking at your face and they looked at it multiple times in a conversation. So the, the brain was capturing that stuff. It's like saying a name and it's like learning refrigeration stuff.
- 0:13And I, the big thing is don't give up. You know, don't give up and give, I give them strategies on how to, how to get a better job. Like, it's, it's about that conversation as well as I tell 'em, you know, you're going in there, you wanna be confident even if you're new, even if you haven't worked on a supermarket rack before.
- 0:14Afternoon, you're on your way home and you're taking another call and you're gonna just gonna help out that customer. I know it's not always fun, but you're helping out that on-call person. You're helping out that other person, you're helping out that customer, you're helping out dispatch, and you know, you can't do it all the time too.
- 0:15We gotta work as a community. And honestly, you know, there's, you're not gonna in a, in a company when you have a lot, a lot of technicians, you're not gonna like every, every, there's a lot of different personalities. But when you're at work, work, put that work in. Try your best, try your hardest people in the community who are, you know.
- 0:16'cause most companies will invest in you. If you invest in a company, you really well. I really believed, and I, and I, I thought about this in the past, and when I look back, I thought about this in part when I am, when I, when I was working for a company, I felt like I was a, an owner, ?
- 0:17Well, what are the stuff that I gotta learn on the business side? So it's people skills. You gotta take some people skills, scores. Is that conversation, those tough conversations? I know they're still hard for me. You know, when I'm talking to an employees or talking about like a business deal, it can be hard and sometimes intimidating, but you gotta learn those skills, those management skills.
- 0:18If, if you, if you look at yourself as self-employed, even if you're getting a paycheck from a from a contractor, ? If you start thinking of yourself being self-employed, it's going to change the way you work. It's gonna change the way you work for sure. Because now you're, you're putting the work in, you're learning, you're pushing hard.
- 0:19That's just what it is. It doesn't even matter if you're an entrepreneur. These business owners that I know that I'm working with and deal with learning from successful one, they're working harder than anyone at their, their company has, the most of them that I'm looking at. They're busting it every day, 15, 16 hours a day.
- 0:20'cause that company wouldn't be grow growing if, if your company's losing a lot of a lot of customers. If your customer company's losing money, if all the people are quitting all the time, well there's those people aren't, that, those companies aren't putting that work in. That's what it is. And then there's, there's waves and stuff.
- 0:21That's where you're gonna get to the next level. I was having a great conversation with a guy named Peter, and he's I'm pretty sure he is a third year. Yeah, it was, he's a third year super cool guy. And he was like Trevor, like, I'm just, I love the hours, I love putting the work in. I get some big paychecks and it's awesome.
- 0:22Some of them own their own business. Some of them are first year, some of them are journeymen, it doesn't matter. And that's the people I want to hang around with. Those technicians who wanna level up, what's the next step? You gotta write down those goals. Do I wanna do, I wanna be doing service at 60 years old.
- 0:23You can put the work in, you can put the time in, and then what's that next step? And I think there's a lot there. There's a lot that a lot of people don't know. Those next steps, I didn't even know those next steps. I'm here where I'm at today just, just by putting the work in, you know, having a little bit of luck.
- 0:24Lots of people even using ai, I didn't even know they could do it, and I showed them how to do it on their phone, which was awesome for me. I love teaching, I love sharing, but I love when I see technicians going to level up. There was a guy in the course that I said, you know, if you get a paid. Ai you pay for an ai, they're better.
- 0:25Like anything, just like come into a training course. A lot of people say, oh Trevor, I love all your videos. I'm watching 'em all along and I'm learning. It's great, but you are not gonna get the same, quality of knowledge is quick. Unless you come into the paid program. It's just the way it is. They're, we just get so more, it's like anything, it's like it's lined up, it's curriculum, it's customized, it's, it's in order and it's step, it's stepped approach where you don't, you know, you're not all over the place.
- 0:26Level up, and this is what I love about this industry. I consistently meet more and more technicians that surprise me, and they're just like, yeah, I'm, I'm going for it. And just consistently not giving up, putting the work in just like you've been doing all day today, crushing out those calls. If it's cold out, if it's warm out, you're in freezers, you outer freezer.
- 0:27At least just one or two. Write them down. Think of yourself as self-employed. That's just a game changer. It's a just a mindset. It's just a total different mindset to thinking of your employee. Think of you as self-employed. That's where people get really successful and they just start to grow. How? How do I build myself?
- 0:28Enjoy this time in refrigeration because it's going to get better and better. We are gonna get more people into industry. We're gonna train more people, but enjoy this time because this is a great time to be in refrigeration. The new technologies. The different ways of learning how we can help people, how we're helping people globally, helping the food supply chain.
