- 0:24Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:28Amen. Exodus chapter 20, if you would
- 0:31open your Bibles, Exodus chapter 20, we are going to continue
- 0:35where we on where we left off. I was spending a couple weeks in
- 0:40this chapter looking at the 10 commandments.
- 0:42That's our title, 10 Commandments, Part 2.
- 0:46We're learning about the 10 words that God gave his nation,
- 0:50the nation of Israel. The 10 commandments, these were
- 0:54intended to guide them and guard them.
- 0:57It is a definition of relationship different from what
- 1:02they've been experienced in Egypt.
- 1:04No longer answering as slaves to taskmasters, they're now free in
- 1:10relationship to their Creator, to their Father, their heavenly
- 1:14Father. It's as if God saying to them
- 1:17here in chapter 20, look, I heard your cry.
- 1:20Do you realize why I delivered you?
- 1:23I heard your cry and this is the response of seeing your
- 1:29suffering. You cried out to me and I came
- 1:31down and delivered you. And now don't take that
- 1:35relationship lightly. And how many can hear that today
- 1:39in the New Covenant? It's just a word from the Lord.
- 1:42Don't take your relationship with Him lightly or in a
- 1:47secondary role. In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus
- 1:51taught us that no man can serve 2 masters.
- 1:56Here in Exodus chapter 20, he says right in verse 2, sounds
- 2:01very familiar. I'm the Lord your God who
- 2:03brought you up out of the land of Egypt, out of the House of
- 2:05bondage. You shall have no other gods
- 2:07before me. You shall not serve 2 masters.
- 2:11Exclusive worship. And then he says in verse 4, no
- 2:16idols, no carved images, because idols and idolatry rob our heart
- 2:22away from exclusivity. And then we learn not to take
- 2:27the Lord's name in vain. And we learned that that was
- 2:31much more than just not cussing. It's always applied or often
- 2:36applied to clean up your mouth and don't cuss.
- 2:38And certainly there's a secondary, you know, role in
- 2:42it's a good we learned last time, it's a good thing to stop
- 2:45cussing. Amen.
- 2:46It's a good thing to have your mouth cleaned out, but there's a
- 2:49better verse for that in Ephesians.
- 2:51To not let no, to not allow any corrupt communication come out
- 2:54except for what is necessary to edify.
- 2:56You see, I memorized that early on as a believer because of my
- 3:00language and where I was coming out of what God saved me out of
- 3:03as a very foul mouth. But that's not what He was
- 3:06sharing. What He was sharing is not to
- 3:08take the name of the Lord lightly, not to take the name of
- 3:13the Lord lightly or empty. Make it empty because His
- 3:18identity is pure. You remember when Jesus was
- 3:21asked about the law, He said, teacher, which is the greatest
- 3:25commandment? This is Matthew 22 verse 36.
- 3:28What's the greatest commandment in the law?
- 3:30And Jesus said you shall love the Lord your God with all your
- 3:33heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
- 3:37The 1st and great commandment and the second is like it, you
- 3:41shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 3:43On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
- 3:48When we turn our attention to the 10 commandments, you see
- 3:50they fit perfectly with what Jesus is teaching here.
- 3:54Where the 1st 4 commandments are all about loving the Lord God
- 3:58with all your heart, soul and mind, then the final six have
- 4:02this relational aspect with others.
- 4:04Vertical relationship comes first.
- 4:07Horizontal relationships naturally follow.
- 4:12All right, well, let's pick up in verse 8 and look at the 4th
- 4:14commandment. It says remember the Sabbath day
- 4:19to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do
- 4:23all your work. But the 7th day is the Sabbath
- 4:27of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work, you
- 4:32nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your
- 4:35maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who's within
- 4:38your gates. For in six days the Lord made
- 4:42the heavens and the earth and the sea, and all that's in them,
- 4:46and rested the 7th day. Therefore the Lord blessed the
- 4:50Sabbath day and hallowed it. The 4th commandment is to keep
- 4:56the Sabbath or in a more simple way, to rest.
- 5:00Isn't that great? God gives you a commandment to
- 5:03rest. It's a needful commandment.
- 5:06Some of us simply need the command to rest.
- 5:12We weren't made to go 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- 5:18That is not God's design for us. Being created in His image, He
- 5:24gives the perfect pattern, six days of work, one day of rest,
- 5:30and it's to be hallowed for the children of Israel.
- 5:33It's to be hallowed and remembering of that new
- 5:36relationship of the covenant. This is God's design, 6 in one,
- 5:42and it started in creation. It's not God's will for you to
- 5:47burn the candle at both ends. And you remember over the years
- 5:50I've been around long enough is each time they introduce some
- 5:53new technology, they always sell it in such a way where it's
- 5:57going to save you time, It's going to save you time, It's
- 5:59going to save you time. What they don't say, and I'm
- 6:01speaking in the workplace, of course, is that that time that
- 6:05you think you're saving is going to be filled with someone else's
- 6:08work and you're just going to keep going.
- 6:11You, you hear those code words at work.
- 6:13You always know it's going to be more work when they start
- 6:16talking about efficiencies. Whenever you hear that word, you
- 6:19go, whoa, I don't know how efficient is it going to be for
- 6:22me. But there is a culture, it's
- 6:24based in our workforce. You know that truly push, push,
- 6:29push, get as much as you can get as much as you possibly make as
- 6:32much money as you can. But this, this commandment is a
- 6:36personal commandment in your relationship with God that comes
- 6:40to protect you from personal destruction because you can't
- 6:44do, I can't work seven days, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- 6:48We all need rest. And as much as we need the work,
- 6:53we need rest as well. And unfortunately, this
- 6:57commandment to rest and honor the honor, this day in honor of
- 7:01the Lord has become very controversial in the church.
- 7:05I'm not going to go into the depth, I'll go to some depth
- 7:08today. But I have done a whole Bible
- 7:10study on this topic, if this is a topic you wrestle with.
- 7:14And I think I titled it something like, should
- 7:16Christians only worship on the Sabbath?
- 7:19Because that is the issue, that somehow the command here in Acts
- 7:2320 and other places has become the absolute day of worship.
- 7:28And so some people take this and make something legalistic out of
- 7:31it. Either they're living in fear of
- 7:33violating some rule, or they live trying to find out and
- 7:39watch others and see others violating this in their own
- 7:42interpretation. This man made rule to just
- 7:45pounce on them. But that's not what God intends
- 7:48here. He did not intend for this to be
- 7:51a debate. It's a very simple command.
- 7:55Rest work six days rest the 7th. He wanted there for you He
- 8:02wanted there to be a day for you and me to rest to sit down one
- 8:12day out of other every other day and commune with the father
- 8:17commune with one another to connect emotionally to to
- 8:22connect and in rest enjoying relationship, enjoying
- 8:26friendship. He wanted there to be a day
- 8:28where we turn our minds off to some degree and stop thinking so
- 8:33much, and certainly to stop worrying a day where faith could
- 8:38be exercised in a real way. Stop thinking about your career
- 8:43and stop worrying about your grades and not worry about your
- 8:47work and your obligations in the stack of papers and whether
- 8:51you're going to be laid off all of the things and just rest in a
- 8:56posture of worship so that it becomes a pattern for the rest
- 9:01of the week. So you learn on your day of rest
- 9:05or in our culture, you know, here in the Western culture, the
- 9:07work week is typically 5 days and two.
- 9:10They try to go one more, but God says 6 and one is good.
- 9:13If you get 5 and two, then certainly there's days of
- 9:16recreation, there's days of rest, but there's also days of
- 9:19communion and connection that we would be able to enjoy God
- 9:26because, you know, the reality of the day of rest for God is
- 9:29that he didn't stop all activity because he kept the world
- 9:34together, but he stopped his work.
- 9:36He was able to complete it in six days.
- 9:39And that's the pattern for us. Now, I want you to understand
- 9:43this in the context it was given.
- 9:45Do you think that while they were slaves in Egypt, they ever
- 9:48got a day off, Yes or no? No, they were worked into the
- 9:52ground, taken advantage of. They even probably developed a
- 9:56thought process to be efficient and try to please their
- 9:59taskmasters and try to earn something in this life of
- 10:02slavery. For hundreds of years they
- 10:05didn't get a day off. But now that God is their
- 10:08master, the fourth thing he tells them is you need rest.
- 10:15And don't you think their hearts welled up with agreement and
- 10:18unity with the Spirit? They go, yes, we need rest, We
- 10:24need physical and spiritual rest.
- 10:27God was creating for them a new rhythm of life where He was
- 10:30priority, where they shared worship with no one else,
- 10:35whether they've respected and honored Him, and His name that
- 10:39represented who He was. You'll remember even back in
- 10:43Mark chapter 6, the apostles had returned to Jesus.
- 10:47They reported all the ministry that they had seen and they done
- 10:51and they were a part of in Mark 630, it says Then the apostles
- 10:55gathered to Jesus, told him all those things, both what they had
- 10:59done and what they had taught. And Jesus said to them, come
- 11:03aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.
- 11:11You've been working hard. It's time to rest even here in
- 11:17the life of our church, as demanding as it can be for those
- 11:20that serve here and those that that are on staff here on our
- 11:23team here, we arranged throughout the years for special
- 11:27times of rest. We have schedules where we do
- 11:31the best that we can and the best ways that we can to honor
- 11:34days off, to honor the time away.
- 11:37Because I mean, if the requirement of rest was Sunday,
- 11:42if that was the day or even Saturday, I mean, we're here to
- 11:45worship. So there's work to be done here
- 11:48though the other days of rest. And it's not about what day it
- 11:51is. Although technically you can
- 11:53listen this in the Bible study. Technically, according to the
- 11:57Old Testament, the Sabbath would be Saturday.
- 12:00Sunday is the first day of the week.
- 12:02Sunday's the first day of the week.
- 12:04Sunday is the day where the church began meeting in the new
- 12:07covenant. And again, I don't want to get
- 12:09into do into much depth, but I have just for those that might
- 12:13question this, because that's the big question.
- 12:16The big question is this a restriction on what day we
- 12:20should gather together for worship?
- 12:22And should the Christian follow this strictly?
- 12:25To which the answer is no, not in the Old covenant sense.
- 12:31We're New Covenant believers. Even though this has been so
- 12:34divisive over the years. There are those.
- 12:37Jehovah Witnesses would be one group, the 7th Day Adventist
- 12:40would be another. That would adhere to and even
- 12:44require Sabbath day worship, which would mean you can only
- 12:49worship on Saturday. Or you're wrong.
- 12:53Some even claim that Sunday worship is the mark of the
- 12:57beast. Like it's not, it's not the day
- 13:03that which you worship. Well, I would put it this way.
- 13:08Every day is a day of worship unto the Lord every day.
- 13:12And you can just draw it and let's turn there.
- 13:13We don't turn much. Let's go over to Colossians with
- 13:15me in your Bibles. Just turn over to Colossians.
- 13:19It's just a simple little truth. But if we're going to hold to a
- 13:22doctor and it has to be consistent throughout the
- 13:24entirety of Scriptures and the idea of restrictions of worship
- 13:29to Saturday or the mark of the beast doesn't pass the
- 13:32Corinthian or the Colossian test.
- 13:34And notice with me, Colossians chapter 2.
- 13:37When you get there, Mark verse 16.
- 13:39Colossians chapter 2 in verse 16 it says therefore let no one
- 13:46judge you in food or in drink or regarding a festival or a new
- 13:53moon or what does your Bible say?
- 13:55Sabbaths don't let anyone judge you regarding Sabbaths.
- 14:00They are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of
- 14:07Christ. Paul would say in Romans that
- 14:11you were you honor one day with this way and you honor another
- 14:14day. But let each one be fully
- 14:16convinced in his own mind of what days are important to you,
- 14:20what days you mark. But every day is a day of
- 14:23worship. It's not a command to
- 14:25Christians, it's a covenant with the nation of Israel.
- 14:28Of the 10 commandments given today, the only purely
- 14:31ceremonial and non moral command is here #4 the other nine deal
- 14:37with transcendent moral absolutes and they're repeated
- 14:41over and over again the New Testament.
- 14:43In the New Testament, don't murder, don't commit adultery,
- 14:46don't lie, don't steal. But the Sabbath in the New
- 14:49Covenant is never expanded upon, taught or repeated In the New
- 14:54Testament. We read often that the church
- 14:57worshipped on the first day of the week very specifically
- 15:00throughout the book of Acts. We just finished studying the
- 15:02book of Acts and they would gather together when on the
- 15:06first day of the week, continuing steadfastly in the
- 15:09apostles doctrine. However, I don't believe that's
- 15:11exclusive. They gather together on Mondays
- 15:14and Tuesdays and whenever they could gather together is a day
- 15:18of worship. The Sabbath is a shadow of
- 15:22things to come because the Sabbath, our Sabbath today is
- 15:28Jesus. So being in Christ, you are
- 15:32keeping the Sabbath exactly as it's commanded in Exodus chapter
- 15:3620 #5 Pick up with me, come back.
- 15:41Exodus chapter 20, verse 12. These defining relationship
- 15:46moments honor your Father and your mother that your days may
- 15:52be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
- 15:57The Hebrew word honor could also be in.
- 16:00You could also include the synonyms respect, obey, listen,
- 16:06submit to your mother and father.
- 16:10This is the order for the home. The parents, mother and father,
- 16:16are the authority in the home, and the children are to honor
- 16:21and obey their parents and the Lord.
- 16:24And honoring mom and dad is tough for any kid, you know,
- 16:28especially those navigating through the teenage years and
- 16:31the various pressures and temptations.
- 16:34And you may be a young person today, and it's just so hard.
- 16:36It's so hard. I acknowledge that it can be
- 16:38hard even in the best of homes. We all have the flesh and this
- 16:43can be hard. That's why it's a reminder.
- 16:46This is the pathway of peace and the right way to have.
- 16:49When you have a relationship with me, God says then you as
- 16:52you have relationships with others.
- 16:54He starts right in the home. The home is so important,
- 16:59honoring mom and dad. This is God's design parents are
- 17:02given as gifts to their children to teach them and train them and
- 17:08help them handle the issues of life as it's to be handed down
- 17:12relationally throughout the generations.
- 17:14Again, parents, Proverbs chapter 22, verse 6, train up a child in
- 17:19the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart
- 17:22from it. Ephesians chapter 6, verse four.
- 17:25And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but
- 17:29bring them up in the training and the admonition of the Lord.
- 17:34And for the kids under the training and the kids under the
- 17:37discipleship and discipline of the home, they are to honor
- 17:41their mother and father. And he says that the benefit of
- 17:44honor honoring your mom and dad is that your days might be long.
- 17:48And remember, the penalty in the Old Testament for disobedience
- 17:51to your parents was stoning. And so an honoring of your
- 17:55mother and father had a very practical value to it that your
- 18:00life would live long, you would have.
- 18:03And I don't believe it's just in days.
- 18:05It's also an enjoyment and in relationship where the same type
- 18:10of relationship you enjoy with your father and mother, with
- 18:13your father in heaven, you can enjoy on earth.
- 18:16And the same penalty for cursing your parents is the same penalty
- 18:20for blaspheming God. Exodus chapter 21.
- 18:23In the next chapter, parents are to be listened to, honored and
- 18:29obeyed. And often the question comes up.
- 18:31Let me give you a couple questions for clarification.
- 18:34Well, Ed, how long are we to honor our mothers and fathers?
- 18:37And here's the answer. As long as they're your mother
- 18:40and father, we're to honor them. We're to honor their role in our
- 18:46lives, which leads to a much more difficult question.
- 18:50It's very important that we address this because the answer
- 18:54to it might be a little different than you'd expect.
- 18:58But what are we to do, Pastor, about those parents who
- 19:01dishonored us? How do we respond in the body of
- 19:06Christ? How do we respond in our
- 19:08relationship with God? How do we honor dishonouring
- 19:13parents? And you say, Ed, what do you
- 19:17mean dishonor? Well, how do we respond to the
- 19:22parents that wounded us or abused us?
- 19:28The parents that hurt you and scarred you and abandoned you
- 19:32and damaged you? Those are important questions to
- 19:37ask, and here's the answer. What are we to do?
- 19:43We're to forgive them. That's the answer.
- 19:47How could I possibly honor a dishonouring parent?
- 19:51It won't happen without forgiveness.
- 19:55Forgiveness is the pathway to reconciliation.
- 20:00Now, of course, remember this, forgiveness only requires one
- 20:04person, you and your relationship with God Forgives,
- 20:09which the Word has the idea of releasing someone from the debt
- 20:14that they owe you. So forgiveness is far from
- 20:17approving. It's far from ignoring.
- 20:20It's far from sweeping things under the rug.
- 20:22It's literally acknowledging that a wrong was done and
- 20:27releasing them from that debt. And when you and I choose to
- 20:32release someone from their debt, we also release ourselves.
- 20:36It's a powerful, powerful tool. Forgiveness.
- 20:40Now we often confuse forgiveness with reconciliation, as if if I
- 20:47forgive then do I put myself back under that abuse?
- 20:50No. Do I allow that dishonoring
- 20:54person then to harm me? No, because reconciliation
- 20:59requires repentance and change. But nothing is required for you
- 21:05to forgive, for you to release. This is no small thing to God.
- 21:11This is huge forgiveness honoring our parents.
- 21:14Unforgiveness is crushing to the bride of Christ.
- 21:18It is destructive. Unforgiveness will crush you and
- 21:22enslave you and embitter you and even kill you.
- 21:27Jesus taught us that we must love our enemies, bless those
- 21:31who persecute us, even if it's a mom or dad.
- 21:36Not because they deserve it or are worthy of it, but because we
- 21:41must forgive. It is the hallmark.
- 21:44Forgiveness is the hallmark of the grace of God in your life.
- 21:49It is the response when we realize how much our Father has
- 21:54forgiven us and invites us still through the blood of Jesus
- 21:59Christ into relationship. Forgiveness flows because of
- 22:03God's grace. Now I know forgiveness doesn't
- 22:07alleviate how complex this future may be.
- 22:11How difficult it will continue, how you carry the wounds.
- 22:16The Lord heals. And man, we're all walking
- 22:20around. I think if we step back, we're
- 22:22all walking around with one or two people wounds in our lives
- 22:27or three or 10 or we didn't. We don't even keep track
- 22:31anymore. We realize it's a part of it's a
- 22:33part of life and I do acknowledge that the reality of
- 22:39wounds in the home and to those that you trust, they're they're
- 22:42deeper than most. But forgiveness is non
- 22:46negotiable for your progress in the Lord.
- 22:52And the fact that you can forgive someone is proof that
- 22:56you actually have received forgiveness yourself.
- 22:59It's an evidence where you might even say today I can't forgive,
- 23:08but then what's impossible with man is possible, or yeah, what's
- 23:11impossible with man is possible with God.
- 23:14It's going to require a supernatural work.
- 23:16And surprisingly, as a believer, you're a supernatural work
- 23:21because of the work of God in you and through you.
- 23:24When you forgive and I forgive, we're demonstrating that you're
- 23:27a true child of God when you forgive.
- 23:29And here's the problem, if you have and if I have parent wounds
- 23:33in my life and I don't respond in forgiveness, I'm going to
- 23:37wound my kids as much as you have that desire to do better
- 23:44than your parents. If you don't deal with this
- 23:46issue, you're going to be, you're going to be in a place
- 23:50where you're going to wound your kids too, more than you would
- 23:54normally do as a human being. Because the prison of
- 23:58bitterness, the Bible says, defiles all the defilement that
- 24:04overflows from a bitter heart overflows to the people that are
- 24:08closest to you, the people that live with you.
- 24:12You're the little peoples that you created.
- 24:16And the exact opposite of what you want happens because
- 24:21forgiveness isn't flowing from your life so that you can be
- 24:25right with the Lord. And the if, if there's a
- 24:28dishonoring parent, then that honor begins with forgiveness.
- 24:33I don't really have a road map for the future.
- 24:35I don't know what happens after forgiveness.
- 24:37It's going to be different for every family, every situation.
- 24:41Someone will hear this message and then they'll immediately map
- 24:44out the rest of their life and talk themselves out of obeying.
- 24:50Well, if you know, if I forgive them this, this, this, this, and
- 24:52I don't know what this, this, this, and this, I don't know the
- 24:57Lord, the Holy Spirit will have to navigate you.
- 24:59You just have to go back to the Scripture you memorized this
- 25:01January, right? Trust in the Lord with all your
- 25:04heart. Lean not on your own
- 25:06understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your
- 25:08ways. And what does He promise?
- 25:10He will direct your paths. He knows the path to go.
- 25:16This command I often will refer to this this truth, you know, in
- 25:23a in a marriage, it comes up a lot where a spouse is severely
- 25:27wounded, the other spouse and the wounded spouse responds with
- 25:34a sinful like some something just as bad or worse, and they
- 25:40were wounded. And instead of forgiveness, they
- 25:42immediately go out and want to to exact vengeance and justice.
- 25:46But I remind them, even as I remind myself in life, that just
- 25:51because someone sends against me does not give me permission to
- 25:55sin. You won't find that anywhere in
- 25:59the Bible. Somebody resends against me,
- 26:02harms me, does not automatically now exclude me from loving them
- 26:09in the agape love of God. I don't know how the
- 26:13relationship will continue. I don't know all the future, but
- 26:15I do know if I harbor unforgiveness in my heart, I'm
- 26:19going to become bitter, I'm going to become resentful.
- 26:21I'm going to become a very ugly UN Christ like version of
- 26:25myself. And I felt like it was important
- 26:28that we talk about it here because this is a big area
- 26:32because we as parents have failed so much.
- 26:36And we may have parents that failed us and they have parents
- 26:39that failed them. And, and the key to get back is
- 26:42I need to honor my parents. I don't need to agree with
- 26:44everything. I don't need to like everything,
- 26:48but it's important that I honor, I have to honor them.
- 26:53And some of you, it might start with forgiveness, if forgiveness
- 26:57is an issue. I meant to bring it up and I
- 26:59forgot, but there is a packet on either side of the stage here.
- 27:03Or you can e-mail me and I'll send you the PDF that you can
- 27:06print out yourself. One of the most powerful.
- 27:08It's small, easy to read, but one of the most powerful
- 27:12teachings on forgiveness that I have ever read.
- 27:15I read it a many years ago, having walked with the Lord for
- 27:18so long, and I was like, wow, this would have been really
- 27:20helpful 10 years ago. It's that kind of packet.
- 27:23So if there's any left up here on the stage, you're welcome to
- 27:26them. But you can always e-mail me.
- 27:28I'll send you the PDF. It doesn't take long.
- 27:30I actually have quite a bit of resources on the topic of
- 27:32forgiveness because this is a big deal, whether it's with your
- 27:36parents or it's with your neighbor or it's with your boss
- 27:39or it's with your ex, whatever. Forgiveness sets you free and
- 27:45heals the body of Christ and brings back purity to the bride
- 27:50of Christ. And that is an important
- 27:53question here. Let's go to the next command,
- 27:56the 6th command. It says in verse 13, you shall
- 28:00not murder. Thank God for that command.
- 28:06Value life. You shall not take the life of
- 28:10another intentionally. You must respect life in all its
- 28:15forms. And notice it doesn't say you
- 28:17shall not kill. That is a different word.
- 28:20This is murder because there are accidents that happen and and
- 28:24they there's a word for accidental killing.
- 28:26It's manslaughter. It's not intentional, wasn't on
- 28:30purpose. This is an intentional form
- 28:33later in the Old Testament there's he make God makes the
- 28:36distinction between accidental, which is manslaughter and murder
- 28:40and murder has always been a problem with man.
- 28:42It was the first crime recorded in the Bible.
- 28:45Was murder right out the get go in the United States two years
- 28:50ago is the latest statistics I could find.
- 28:53They recorded 16,425 murders happening every year, which
- 28:59accounts for 45 murders just in the United States.
- 29:02Not I didn't even look up the worldwide number, but that's 45
- 29:05murders a day. That doesn't include suicides or
- 29:10abortion. The numbers are staggering and
- 29:13it all stems from a lack of valuing human life.
- 29:18Valuing life. God says don't murder, don't do
- 29:22it. Now, of course, for those of us
- 29:26that live in a moral upright life, abiding in Christ, we're
- 29:30this wasn't this is an easy one check.
- 29:34I don't plan on murdering anybody.
- 29:37I, I don't, I don't want anything.
- 29:39I, I value life. I and maybe even the, the
- 29:42resistance, you know, your thoughts are formed by why don't
- 29:44we spend the rest of my life in jail or whatever.
- 29:46But murder is kind of a check mark, kind of like when the
- 29:49Bible says, hey, don't party, don't run around with the
- 29:52partiers like check mark. I don't, I have no desire to do
- 29:54that anymore. I'm not going to party, not
- 29:56going to go out and get drunk. I'm not going to lose it.
- 29:58Check, check, check. However, turn with me to Matthew
- 30:04chapter 5. Let's not be so quick to check
- 30:09things off without giving room for the Holy Spirit to teach us
- 30:15and to go deeper. By the way, the fact that you
- 30:18checked off that you don't want to murder, thank you.
- 30:23It will make the visit of the cadets tomorrow a lot easier and
- 30:27they're not going to be looking for you.
- 30:28Thank you, thank you. However, it goes deeper than
- 30:35that, doesn't it? Jesus said in Matthew 521, You
- 30:40have heard it was said to those of old, you shall not murder and
- 30:44whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.
- 30:47Yes, we did hear that. And then Jesus says, but let me
- 30:53tell you about murder. I say to you that whoever's
- 30:57angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the
- 31:00judgment. Whoever says to his brother
- 31:03Raqqa shall be in danger. I was just like saying it that
- 31:07way. Raqqa shall be in danger of the
- 31:09council, and whoever says, you fool, shall be in danger of
- 31:14Hellfire. Jesus says that anger is the
- 31:20root of murder. And while we might check off
- 31:24murder, how are you doing with anger?
- 31:28Well, pastor, I'm reading the Bible right here and I haven't
- 31:30called people, I haven't called anybody Raqqa in my whole life.
- 31:35And since I'd learned full, I used to use that word, but I use
- 31:38different words Now. Listen, the Christian certainly
- 31:43can be angry without sin. We know that there's righteous
- 31:46anger. It's not as common among
- 31:48believers as believers would make you want to think, but I
- 31:51make room for it. I do believe that God can
- 31:54inspire within us a holy anger that protects and values the
- 31:58honor of God. I I get that I make room for
- 32:01that if for Ephesians 426 very clear be angry, do not sin.
- 32:06Don't let the sun go down on your wrath.
- 32:08Jesus, God and human flesh sinless.
- 32:12He demonstrated a righteous anger as the temple was being
- 32:15used to take advantage of believers.
- 32:17But too often this isn't the case among us.
- 32:21We don't call our brothers and sisters Raqqa, but I'll tell you
- 32:25a real popular word that's being used all the time.
- 32:29When you call someone an idiot, that's along the same lines
- 32:35where you have such an opinion and such an emotive response to
- 32:39something or someone where you go and say, oh, Raqqa, oh, you
- 32:43say you idiot, or perhaps even add a stupid in there.
- 32:51I mean, Jesus is talking about the heart of man, and we skim
- 32:55over these things because we check Mark.
- 32:57Well, I don't have any intention of murder, but have you murdered
- 32:59someone in your heart? And the answer is yes, yes, yes,
- 33:06yeah. I'm not looking at anybody, but
- 33:07yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.
- 33:10Out online, of course we have. So the Lord's always going
- 33:15deeper on us. There's a a deeper truth, a
- 33:18broader work that God wants to do in our lives.
- 33:21So watch out for the anger. That's unrighteous.
- 33:25Watch yourself and pay attention with words that would demean
- 33:30someone out of anger. Idiot, ugly, stupid.
- 33:35The idea with the word fool is that you're considering someone
- 33:38else's worthless and wishing they were dead.
- 33:41It's not just a word. There's a meaning behind it.
- 33:46When God is telling the nation of Israel to not murder, He's
- 33:50certainly advocating the value of life.
- 33:53But there's something deeper. There's a difference between
- 33:56rituals and relationship, between rules and relationship.
- 34:01Rituals are far less important. The outward is far less
- 34:05important. If we did your background check
- 34:08and there's no murder on it, that's far less important,
- 34:11although that's valuable because that's you.
- 34:13You've begun well, Some people have even lost the value of
- 34:18human life. We have family in our church
- 34:21that have lost lives because of murder.
- 34:25Physically. I've met many families that face
- 34:30the challenge of the loss of life.
- 34:32It's heartbreaking. It's just the worst of the
- 34:35worst. But because we can check that
- 34:39office, that's not a part of our lives.
- 34:41Jesus says no, no, no, you don't even need to worry about the
- 34:45check boxes because I'm after your heart.
- 34:49I'm not just after the outward behavior.
- 34:53It is a significance of what God is wanting to do in our lives.
- 34:58Sin that's unconfessed, anger that's seething, offenses that
- 35:04go and build a case against someone, they all hinder our
- 35:09ability to worship and connect with God.
- 35:11You can jot it down in Isaiah 59 verse 2.
- 35:14So we have a key here for us and enhancing the worship in our
- 35:19worship life. He says God says your iniquities
- 35:21have separated you from God and your sins have hidden His face
- 35:25from you so that He will not hear you.
- 35:29You know, coming back to Matthew here quickly, Jesus gives this
- 35:33little instruction about, hey, OK, so you're you're the topic
- 35:37of anger is on your mind. You've heard about murder, but
- 35:40I'm going to talk to you about a murder that is far more common.
- 35:43And and he says then once you realize that, notice what he
- 35:47says, come back with Matthew chapter, chapters 5 and look
- 35:54with me in verse 23. So he says, if you leave, if you
- 36:00bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother
- 36:03has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar
- 36:07and go your way. The context really of your
- 36:09brother or something against you is your anger toward them
- 36:15unresolved expressed. There's a very good chance Jesus
- 36:19is talking about the person that you rocked you called a fool
- 36:25because as you realize there's there's things unresolved that
- 36:28are within your power to resolve.
- 36:30Be reconciled to your brother. Make it right, then offer your
- 36:33gift. God is far more interested in
- 36:35the relationship part of our worship than just the offering
- 36:38of a gift. But the easier part is just give
- 36:40the gift. Jesus says no, it's not one or
- 36:45the other, it's both. First be reconciled, then come
- 36:48agree with your adversary quickly.
- 36:50While you're on the way, does your adversary deliver you to
- 36:53the judge? The judge hands you over to the
- 36:55officer, and you be thrown into prison.
- 36:57The Bible would speak to us as much as depends upon you.
- 37:00Live at peace with all men. If your brothers offended you,
- 37:05you go to them. I mean, imagine if the church
- 37:08was filled with all the little offenses that we all have.
- 37:11We all go through. We're humans.
- 37:13But Can you imagine if a church service like the next time we
- 37:16gather together this weekend, everybody's just trying to find
- 37:18each other. Hey, I'm really offended, but I
- 37:20was looking for you because I think I offended you.
- 37:22And we're just all weeping here and crying, trying to make
- 37:24things right. I've never seen a service like
- 37:26that before. However, I have seen people make
- 37:29things right. I have seen people seek people.
- 37:31I have seen, I've had people come to me and go, I want this
- 37:34dude, please, pastor, I want to talk to you before service
- 37:36starts and they're wanting to apply this.
- 37:39It's like, I just want to make things right.
- 37:41It's like, OK, share it with me. And you'd be amazed what the
- 37:47Holy Spirit will do when we present ourselves to him.
- 37:50And you know, we, we have these, these internal arguments and
- 37:55debates in the church. You know, what's the best
- 37:57worship, What's the best worship?
- 37:59Or, you know, we need better music or, or we need better
- 38:02preaching or we need better whatever.
- 38:04But a deeper worship experience comes through deeper
- 38:07relationship with the Father. That's it.
- 38:10You can enjoy any music if you're in tune with the Lord and
- 38:14you can enjoy any preaching if you're in tune with the Lord.
- 38:19No exclusive voice is going to be used in your life if your
- 38:23heart's right from the Lord. You'll just hear from the Lord.
- 38:25The worst delivery, the word like you will hear from the
- 38:28Lord. Why?
- 38:29Because you're worshipping the Lord and God will use people in
- 38:33your life, doesn't matter who they are.
- 38:35The dryness goes away as relationships are mended.
- 38:39The emptiness disappears as forgiveness is extended, the
- 38:43passion returns as mercy is received, and the burden of
- 38:48weights of guilt and shame and brokenness are lifted.
- 38:53And the emphasis here is placed upon the worshipper, you and me.
- 38:59Does that mean we track down every person we ever hurt?
- 39:03No, doesn't mean that. The keyword in this text is
- 39:07there as you come to worship, as you're seeking the Lord, as He
- 39:13speaks to your heart and you respond to that moment of the
- 39:18holy. We don't need to be digging up
- 39:19old hurts. We don't need to be digging up
- 39:24old offenses. We just need to be seeking the
- 39:29Lord. As you and I abide in Christ and
- 39:32seek the Lord, it's amazing what He will do in speaking to your
- 39:36heart and your life and empowering you to obey Him and
- 39:40you live a free life. So there's nothing better in
- 39:45your walk with the Lord to the live than to live in his
- 39:48freedom. You just like I'm so free.
- 39:52Recently I heard something that that that happened that may or
- 39:55may not affect me and I just remember my response.
- 39:57I remember my response. I said I'm free, but it doesn't
- 40:02really matter what they do. I am free.
- 40:05It sounds like as they're described, it sounds like
- 40:08they're in bondage. I'm not in bondage.
- 40:11And so we'll have to wait to see how it sorts out.
- 40:13And it's just a great way to live your life.
- 40:15I love the Lord. He loves me because I love the
- 40:18Lord and he loves me. I can love you and hopefully I
- 40:22can receive. I hope you love me hopefully.
- 40:24And we love each other and we can receive that and grow
- 40:27together in grace. We're just free.
- 40:29Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty and freedom.
- 40:34And it's not a misuse of freedom.
- 40:36I don't need to go in in depth of that like, whoa, OK, Am I
- 40:38free to send? No, that's not freedom, that's
- 40:41bondage. Am I free to compromise?
- 40:44No, because the Lord will never lead you to sin and the Lord
- 40:48will never lead you to compromise.
- 40:50That's not freedom, that's bondage.
- 40:53Freedom is the enjoyment of your sins being forgiven and your
- 40:58life is hidden in Him. You don't even need to worry
- 41:02about murdering your brother in your heart because you love the
- 41:06Lord. And even if you got a problem
- 41:08with that brother, that sister you love the Lord, and the love
- 41:12of the Lord comes through you. Amen.
- 41:17Here let me show you scripture before we leave.
- 41:18Proverbs 423 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of
- 41:23it spring the issues of life. Guard your heart, Church.
- 41:27It's a very important place that the Lord wants to be the ruler
- 41:33and reigner. He wants to rule and reign your
- 41:37heart. Give it to Him, Let them rule
- 41:41you and reign you heart, soul, mind and strength.
- 41:46Lord, we thank you. We're not all these years of
- 41:49bondage and slavery, but that you have called us out into
- 41:52freedom and as you define our hearts just beat with these
- 41:57commands. We don't feel them we don't
- 41:59receive them as burden or heavy some heavy or burdensome like
- 42:03they they're just yes Lord, you're exclusive yes Lord, I
- 42:07don't want anything to take my attention from you yes or I want
- 42:10to honor your name. Yes Lord, I want to honor my
- 42:13parents. Yes Lord, I I want to live in a
- 42:17way where I honor life. It's our hearts desire God in
- 42:23out of a response to you that you would fill us in a fresh and
- 42:31a new with the spirit of freedom that we might honor you and
- 42:36enjoy you. Lord, forgive us for murdering
- 42:40people in our hearts. It happens way too much and we
- 42:46want a clean heart, a pure heart that comes from your spirit.
- 42:52So help us, Lord, in a real in a really difficult world.
- 42:55It's hard to live, but it's been that way every generation.
- 42:58I'm sure it was hard to live under Nero, under Herod, like
- 43:02it's been hard every generous. So just forgive us.
- 43:04Lord help us that we might be the salt and light of this earth
- 43:08in Jesus name, Amen. Amen.
- 43:11Nobody stand yet because I really think we need to
- 43:14celebrate tonight before we sing this song.
- 43:18Last week, if you were here, we prayed for you guys.
- 43:21Just looking to see a habit broken, a newness toward your
- 43:24habit this new year. How many of you had a good week
- 43:28in relation to that prayer request?
- 43:30You stand. So you're the only ones I want
- 43:32to stand. So we got one.
- 43:33A VVVVV. Who else?
- 43:38Who else? Who else?
- 43:40Anyone. VVVVV.
- 43:45And so what's your song? Anything about victory?
- 43:54No, no, no, that's right. So Lord, I thank you for these
- 43:59victories. I know there are some that wish
- 44:01they could stand, but it was a hard week.
- 44:02So we pray again, this is not like a behavior modification,
- 44:07but these victories are because of you.
- 44:10Even as my brother shares, like the reason why we're singing
- 44:12this song is where victory comes.
- 44:14We abide in you. Your power is in us.
- 44:16So thank you. We celebrate and we celebrate by
- 44:19faith the newness of life this week.
- 44:23You have some new, you have new opportunities and second
- 44:25chances. So bless those Lord looking for
- 44:28this in their lives. And then for those that
- 44:30experience it, we just want more.
- 44:32We want more Lord. We want to walk in victory over
- 44:35this area. And now we got a couple more
- 44:36things to think about, like especially this stuff in our
- 44:39hearts. So we lay it before you in Jesus
- 44:42name, Amen. We pray that you've been
- 44:45encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
- 44:47sanctuary of Calvary Church for prayer.
