- 2:23we have a run into, and that is Richard Diamond, which was nominated
- 2:29by three listeners on Facebook, Kim and Charles and Renee. So we'll bring
- 2:35that to you. In some ways this show, this program really kind of
- 2:40combined the two aspects of Dick Powell's career. He started out as really a
- 2:47kind of a comedic singer in a lot of light romantic comedies, and then
- 2:57when he hit forty, he landed the role of Phil Marlow in Murder My
- 3:01Suite and went on to play actually some darker roles in Johnny o'clock and a
- 3:08Dark Corner. And what you kind of get here is a balancing out of
- 3:15those two as you get a lot of comedy but also of some pretty heavy
- 3:23violence, and it's an interesting combination, and it's one that's been a classic
- 3:28with so many radio fans. So we're pleased today to bring you Richard Diamond
- 3:32from November the twelfth of nineteen forty nine, and the title is the fifty
- 3:39thousand Dollars Diamond Host. Oh here's Dick Powell as Richard Diamond, Private Detective
- 4:21Diamond Detective Agency. A corpse to fit every pocket book. Rig. Oh,
- 4:26hello, Helen, baby, let me sit down. Oh Gig,
- 4:30what's the matter. You sounded like your arch is just bro. You got
- 4:32the right idea? Baby? What's your geography? Are you really hurt?
- 4:38Rick? I believe it or not, I was trampled by a herd of
- 4:41horses. Oh, Rig, you idiot? Now tell me what did happen?
- 4:44Okay, one horse? You ruin me for life? You one horse
- 4:48back by? Oh I don't believe it. I want to see my bull
- 4:50eggs. You actually did? Uh? Uh? It took a girl to
- 4:56get you to ride a horse. It was some slinky blonde. No,
- 5:00baby, it was a plamino. And look, let's get off horses.
- 5:02I've had enough to last me. What's for the early call? Early?
- 5:06Rick? Did you just get in? It's after eleven. I was dreaming
- 5:09of you, baby. You wouldn't have wanted me to stop just to get
- 5:12into the office. It's probably a whole harem. Helen. You got to
- 5:15stop that peaking. You read the morning papers. They come out in the
- 5:18morning, Now you stop that. Did you read them or didn't have a
- 5:20bed down? Why you in the society page? You got? Oh,
- 5:24it's more exciting than that. The police commissioner's house was robbed of fifty thousand
- 5:29dollars worth of diamonds last night, and his gardener was murdered. What I
- 5:31thought that would fetch? You gotta get a paper commissioner's statements written in blood.
- 5:36Yeah, things don't wind up fast. Tomorrow's statement will be in Walt
- 5:41Levinson's blood. It'll be his case. Now you stay out of it,
- 5:44Rick, This thief cuts throats. I'm scared, are you? Rick?
- 5:48Come over to night now, righten you at close range, say eight,
- 5:51I'll practice my knee knockings. I'll be in good form. That's stay in
- 5:56no nightclubs at the sound of the custer and that's Francis can open the door,
- 6:00or it'll be me and my knees see the night, baby bye.
- 6:05Is this the Diamond Detective Agency? Just like it says on the door,
- 6:09come in and close it gently. My Japanese beetle's still asleep. Sleep.
- 6:14He's got a better union. Sit on, mister Phineas Burton. What can
- 6:17I do for you? Mister Burton? Well, I want to hire you
- 6:19if it's agreeable, for one hundred a day in expenses. I'm pretty agreeable.
- 6:23Let's fine. I have a package I want you to deliver to a
- 6:26party in Philadelphia. You can get a messenger for five bucks, or if
- 6:29you're a hired up a carrier pigeon for a handful of popcorn. Why a
- 6:31detective. Well, I'm perfectly capable of judging for myself what I need,
- 6:35mister Diamond. Now here's three hundred dollars. There will be two hundred more
- 6:40for you after you make safe delivery of the package. Why why three letter
- 6:45word meaning why you want to pay me for five days when the trip to
- 6:47Phellion back can be done in a few hours. Well, mister Diamond,
- 6:50I simply want you to drop everything else and take this job immediately, and
- 6:54that is my reason for the added payment. Ah, all right, I'll
- 6:57take your money just as soon as you tell me what's in the package,
- 7:00who it goes to, and why it's so important that I take it Personally.
- 7:02I can't tell you that. Okay, it's your a problem. Now
- 7:08where did I leave my soap chips? Do you have to know? Of
- 7:11course I canna do what you're washing with that soap? I mean about this
- 7:15package. Oh no, no, I can recommend another agency who will do
- 7:17it for twenty five bucks and no questions. Oh very well, mister Elliott
- 7:23will meet you at the Philadelphia station information desk at two o'clock today. I
- 7:26will wire him your description and he will make the contact. As for the
- 7:30package, it contains some very valuable papers which mister Elliott is afraid his wife
- 7:32will try to intercept. I see, he commissioned me to find the best
- 7:35man I could bring the package to him. Oh, you must have read
- 7:39my head. But you'll have to leave immediately. Mister Elliott is very anxious
- 7:43to get the package. You called me at the aster. When you return,
- 7:45and I'll send over the rest of the money. A good day it
- 7:47may be at that what forget it? Burton left the package on my desk
- 7:55with the money. He was a thin guy, had a funny pot that
- 7:59made him look as if he'd swallow the basketball. He pushed it out the
- 8:01door and waddle after it. When a guy insists on throwing money in my
- 8:07lamp, I get suspicious. And when I remember the robbery of the night
- 8:11before, I got that lousy feeling again. Now, Paragraph four, Section
- 8:16B Rule A of the Detective's Code of Ethics says, quote, upon receiving
- 8:20money to deliver package, detective must never open the same It is unethical.
- 8:26Yeah, who's ethical? Well, surprise, no wonder basketball had been nervous.
- 8:37At the bottom of the box were five pretty little diamonds about ten grand
- 8:41worth of a guess. Of course, it may have been that Burton thought
- 8:45diamonds should belong the diamond. But my bet was on a frame up,
- 8:48a frame that cost the real heist is ten grand out of fifty. I
- 8:52was aimed to get him a nice picture to fit the frame. Me,
- 9:00is this mister diamond? Oh? Hello Burton? Something on your mind?
- 9:03Oh? I happened to be in the store across the street and I noticed
- 9:05you hadn't left yet. You will leave right away, won't you just as
- 9:09soon as I arrange things Phineas I remember it takes an hour and a half
- 9:11to get to Philadelphia. I don't want you to be late. I'll bet
- 9:15you don't. It was just to make sure you understand. Oh, yes,
- 9:18yes, yes, I understand. You can dribble your basketball home.
- 9:20Now I beg your pox skip it. Burton's call ended nearly all doubts.
- 9:30I was being framed, all right, and the trap required my leaving for
- 9:33Penn Station right away. I dropped the diamonds into what was left to the
- 9:37quart of milk I had for lunch the day before, put the bottle on
- 9:39the floor by the waist basket. Then I took the package, rewrapped it,
- 9:43and went out to hail a cab. I made one stop at a
- 9:46toy shop, then headed for Penn Station. As I entered, I saw
- 9:50a pair of familiar figures. Real, okay, what's the gag? I
- 9:56got the tip, But even you wouldn't joke about this case. Now,
- 9:58Wald, I'm my joke about mass murder, but never about the commissioner being
- 10:01robbed. Is he making speeches yet? Yeah? That's okay, Shamas.
- 10:05This is one time when you're one diamond too many? Why oh this,
- 10:09you're becoming a wit? Eh, why not? You're halfway there? Uh,
- 10:13Lieutenant, he's picking on me again. You deserve it. Oh this,
- 10:16now shut out. Rick. I know the tip was phony, but
- 10:20the commissioner was there when it came in. I had to act on it.
- 10:22Tip. Don't be smug. I've got one, two, a fifth
- 10:26highly ear Now, don't start that. It was a tip that you were
- 10:28taking the commissioner's diamonds out of town. Now walk and don't don't now walt
- 10:31me, I said, I knew the tip was phony, with the commissioner
- 10:35taking scouts all down the line. No, no, no, don't apologize.
- 10:37Wad I know? Gone sigeant show me a good frisk and I'll recommend
- 10:41you to all my criminal friends who he's clean. Lieutenant Eric, Let's see
- 10:48that package and then you can go this. Oh no, no, I
- 10:52can't seek me. Don't play games wreck please, all right, but it's
- 10:56gonna spoil my surprise. Well, okay, give me a word. It's
- 11:01got nothing to do with this case. I won't bother it. Open No,
- 11:03no, no, I'm hurt. I absolutely insist that you open the
- 11:05package right now. But Rick, you know I tried tennant Levinson. Do
- 11:09your duty. My purity must not be a suspicion O anything to get this
- 11:13over word you were what it's only a pair of dolls you're expecting maybe my
- 11:24gallstones? Soh dolls? The shama's placed with dolls Bury The tag otis before
- 11:30your ear is getting longer than drafted for mule team tag. Sure, but
- 11:35what to my beloved otis from his Ricky? Oh? Now, don't be
- 11:41a groune wal to the other ones for you? For me? Oh no,
- 11:46I'm sorry what I couldn't resist it anyhow? You spoiled my surprise to
- 11:48odors It was our anniversary? What our anniversary? We ain't even related?
- 11:54You don't remember our otis? Well? Can I go back to traffic?
- 12:01I can't stand much more? Oh, shut up O this Rick. If
- 12:05we weren't such good friends, I ought, Hey, now you're upset?
- 12:09Upset? Why should I be upset just because two hoods lift fifty grand an
- 12:13ice from the commissioner, or because it's dumped in my lap with the murder
- 12:16of the gardener, or that I'm given twenty four hours to break the case
- 12:20and then get a tip that leads me to a friend who decides to play
- 12:22games and wreck my side to be on repair. Now, why should I
- 12:24be upset? Oh? Here you're lieutenant, but take it easy as a
- 12:30second bottler by Cobb today while you ride an apology and I maker. I'll
- 12:33do better than that. I'll help you if you'll let me. Well,
- 12:35I can show you your help. Rick, I haven't got a single lead.
- 12:39Do you want to look at the corps first? They as well.
- 12:41Has he got a record? Now? The commissioner swears he was honest.
- 12:46Probably stumbled under the thieves and they had to put him away out of the
- 12:48rest of the servants. We were all out. Commissioner and his wife were
- 12:50at a party. They've given the entire staff the night off. But I
- 12:54guess perhaps the gardener returned a little early. Yeah, well, let's go
- 12:58on and take a look at him. I've got a personal interest that makes
- 13:01me want to crack this case. Client, call him an ex client.
- 13:03I'll explain me later. Come on here he is, Rick, m honesty
- 13:20cut. I was ad made. It could have been a sharp knife,
- 13:24but it's a safe I bet that it was a razor. Remind me not
- 13:28to go to his barber. What safe cracker's got enough nerve to pull his
- 13:33job well? And I got three guys that could fit the job. But
- 13:37one of them has ever been known to carry a weapon of any sort,
- 13:39much less razor. Correction one, there that guard who's playing a lousy joke
- 13:43on us. I suppose this could have been the first time one of them
- 13:46carried a razor. I don't buy that. Neither of you give me the
- 13:50names. I want to talk to them. I can get a lead of
- 13:52some sort. Sure, here they are, and please Rick call me if
- 13:58you get anything. If I can find a nickel, bye. As far
- 14:07as I could see, I had three things to match up. One the
- 14:09careless barer, two the safe cracker was nerve enough to rob the police commissioner,
- 14:15and three the reason why I was picked as the pigeon. I gave
- 14:18up the idea of hunting for Burton, the guy who came into my office.
- 14:22He was probably a flunky and not worth running down. So I checked
- 14:24the names I got from Walt, grabbed a cab, and headed to the
- 14:28Bronx. The first turned out to be an ex khan trying to go straight
- 14:31by working in the Bronx hash house. The second was likely, but he'd
- 14:35kissed his wife at a beer bottle and spent last night in jail. At
- 14:39the third address down Greenwich Village, I met a landlady with gin loaded tonsils
- 14:43and a cute mustache. She tipped me that my third prospect, Vincent Mayer,
- 14:48might be playing pinnuckle at Pietro's, which turned out to be a cafe
- 14:52with a thirty foot bar, three tables in the back room. Hey,
- 14:56uh hockep Yeah, why didn't be friend? No? No chaser milk?
- 15:01Who makes it? Oh? Give me leg from Cow's never carried this stuff?
- 15:07Why can I find Vince Mayor? Why didn't you ask me? Handsome?
- 15:09Wow? Hello? Baby? Now do I look like a baby?
- 15:13Uh No, my name's Jeane. What did they call you? Take your
- 15:18pick? Call me rick? Hey, you talk funny, but you're awful
- 15:22nice too nice to be hunting for Vince Mayor. He's a bad boy,
- 15:26Ricky. Yeah, Well, I'm going to be a hero. Where is
- 15:31he in the back room? There? The guy with the light hair,
- 15:35good character? Thanks, baby, I'll buy you a palace. They give
- 15:41me pdm Joe twenty Clubs twenty spades and forty p knuckles? What no diamonds?
- 15:46Hey? Well, well well look who's here? What do you want?
- 15:52Hummus? Vince the ice man, isn't it? Wow? Now let's
- 15:54see sing sing class of thirty eight? Where's your school? Tie ins?
- 15:58Her name is mister Mayer. You, diamond and privates are not welcome here.
- 16:02It's a closed game. Yeah, move on, give me a reason
- 16:04you want to play dead or come on, Vince. You're not going to
- 16:07get upset just because I think you robbed the commissioner. You did, didn't
- 16:11you. I told my story to the cop. I'll bet you didn't answer
- 16:14my question. Here's another. Who's your barber? You're asking for a diamond?
- 16:18I was brought up right, Let's get off this cat and mouse kick.
- 16:21I want some answers, Vince, do you that's right? Junior?
- 16:23I do? All right? Call him Joe? He all right? Joe,
- 16:32shove it, stab it. That's enough, Joe, all right?
- 16:36Not dragg him out in the alley, Vince can I Yeah, yeah,
- 16:40okay, maybe it'll teach you not to get so nosy. But keep that
- 16:44razor in your pocket. Oh well, honest, this is gonna be real
- 16:48fun. Come on Shamas. Here's where I do some roadwork on your liver.
- 16:59Here, Diamond, I only wish my brother could see you. When
- 17:08I came to, I was curled up around a round metal object I couldn't
- 17:12see, and I felt as if I was smothered in the mountain of cotton,
- 17:15and getting out of it was like trying to shovel sand with a pitchfork.
- 17:21I finally managed to move and wished I hadn't for a company of Bengal
- 17:25lancers began target practice in my side, so I quit trying and lay still
- 17:30for a long moment. Then a voice came fizzing through the cotton at me.
- 17:36Hey, if I'm not you're an angel and this is a harp.
- 17:41Oh, I'm sure no angel, that's the garbage can. So I guess
- 17:44you're not dead. Matter for debate, Genie. Oh help me up?
- 17:48Sure here? Can you stand practically anything after this? Ooh? Heard pretty
- 17:56bad? Come on, mean I My place isn't far. I'll take you
- 18:02there so you can lie down. Just off. I've had today lead on
- 18:04angel, Now, how do you feel I never used language like that in
- 18:19front of a lady. Oh, I'm no lady. I'm a waitress at
- 18:22Pietro's. I had the noise in the back room, and you didn't come
- 18:25out. I took a look, Oh gee, does your head hurt?
- 18:29Babies like all my relatives are inside digging for gold. With luck, I
- 18:33can open my eyes and they won't fall out. You know, you might
- 18:37have had a lot of fun together. You weren't all banged up like this.
- 18:41I'll take that remark up with you later, honey. I'm not usually
- 18:48the kind of guy who runs out on pretty girls, but I only wanted
- 18:52to get my hands on the gunet who tried to kick my brains out.
- 18:55So I took Jean's number, filed it under a later investigation, and stumbled
- 19:00out into the street. My head was clearing, but it was as slow
- 19:03about it as a dummy during a strip tease. Maybe that's why I didn't
- 19:07notice when I came out of the house that I had two guys for company.
- 19:11I about Diamond, uh huh, and Pietro told me Jane had run
- 19:15out. I thought I might find you here. She always goes for guys
- 19:18like you. Now she has taste. I'm glad you came around. I
- 19:22have a few things I want to discuss with you and Joel. Here,
- 19:25hold a chamas. I'll show you how easy it is to get rid of
- 19:27your troubles. That's a pretty little gun. Aren't you stepping out of character
- 19:32events? You're supposed to be a smart one. You're getting on my nerves.
- 19:34Yeah, I'll put the gun away and i'll quiet you down a little.
- 19:37You want me to mess him up again? Vince? And what's with
- 19:40you? I'm to do your job over again. I may at that.
- 19:44Yeah, well you got thirty two teeth, Sonny? You want to try
- 19:45for none? Why you I got some questions I'd still like to have answered.
- 19:49Why was I picked his pigeon? Why me getting a little too smart?
- 19:52Diamond? I'll listen. I know you got Why's to Burton? So
- 19:56it figures that you still got the package reasons to give you ten thousand dollars
- 20:02worth of diamonds. I want them back, Oh dandy, I've got big
- 20:06news for you. Buster, You're not going to get them. Don't make
- 20:07any mistakes, Stamon, I'll use this kind if I have to go eat
- 20:11a tombstone, Joe, Yeah, how's your stomach ache? Oh wait a
- 20:15minute, Joe, a diamond. Look, you can have a choice.
- 20:19You bring the rocks to me at Pietro's in an hour, and we'll forget
- 20:22the whole thing. I don't, I'll send Joe with a few friends to
- 20:27call on you. And for the last time. For a few sick minutes,
- 20:37I leaned against the wall, wondering if I wanted to live. One
- 20:41thing I was certain of was that Vin's mayor was never going to get those
- 20:44diamonds back, or was he. An idea began to percolate in my head
- 20:49to the tune of an old rhyme about a goose in the ganter, and
- 20:52I got inspired enough to sit up and forget my aching ribs. When it
- 20:56simmered into a full scale boil, I grabbed the care I went back to
- 21:00my office and got the diamonds out of the milk bottle where I'd hidden them.
- 21:03Then I headed for the village fast. I was soon banging on a
- 21:07door there like a drummer playing Bob. I owe you, buddy, well,
- 21:18it ain't my cripple. I got the bruises to prove it some one
- 21:22in. Are you really recovered, Hue, Oh no, not that much
- 21:26ageable? Then I need some benches. What do you know about Vince and
- 21:32Joel not too much not to dislike him plenty. Vince got me canned for
- 21:36leaving Pietro's to take care of you. That's why I'm back home. I
- 21:40know he's a smoothie and he I think he's a big time jewel face that
- 21:42much. I know. How about Joe the dog faced boy? Him,
- 21:45he's just a punk. I think his real name is Fancie, your Fanchetti,
- 21:51Franchetti or some such thing. Benchetti. Yeah, I don't know why,
- 21:55but they call him Joe the barber, Joe the barber. Yeah,
- 21:59and that's still because Harry doesn't LA eight to one. This guy works on
- 22:03throats. Thanks, Angel, you've tied up my three points. What are
- 22:07you talking about? Your friend? Vince Mayor lifted fifty grand in eyes for
- 22:11the police commissioner last night, and his accomplished Joe gave the gardener a shave
- 22:15mean murder on the button. The gardener's throat was sliced from life to death.
- 22:21And now, baby, look, I would you like to earn one
- 22:23hundred dollars? Sure? Is it legal? Well? No, I'll take
- 22:29it. Where is he? Will you tell me where's Rick? I know
- 22:41where I'd like him to be. I'm worried though this. Seriously, Rick
- 22:44is in this thing up to his ears. You mean he was in on
- 22:47the job. Don't be stupid, though, of course not. Rick's no
- 22:49crook, but he's mixed up in this case somewhere, and I'm worried.
- 22:52She would have called me by now. She hope he hasn't tangled with that
- 22:56razor guy. I thought you hated Rick. Oh you know, I was
- 23:00just talking. I know, I know what a mess. Rick in danger
- 23:03and I can't find him. The Commissioner's spouting love all over the city hall.
- 23:07The devil didn't have to be the Commissioner's house. You know. It's
- 23:11kind of funny at dead the commission himself. You k for two cents,
- 23:17maybe that's him son Levin's and homicide. Well, Rick, Rick, I
- 23:21was with the devil. You been taking care of some arrangements. Arrangements never
- 23:25mind, just listened. I was picked as a pigeon, and some of
- 23:27those diamonds were planted on me this morning. What I've traced your hoods events,
- 23:32Mayor and Joe the barber Franchette. You come to Pietro's in half an
- 23:36hour. You will catch him with a part of the diamonds on him.
- 23:37Rick, what is this Event's had it figured as a double barrel gag Wall
- 23:41first on the cops by rating the commissioner's house, second by dumping a few
- 23:45of the rocks in my lap and tipping your police. So I take the
- 23:48rap. Why you well, George's name Franchette. You remember I said his
- 23:52brother Tony the sing sing a few years back. I knew he had a
- 23:56brother, but until now Joe stayed out of Manhattan. I get it.
- 24:00Okay, what's the play. I'm going to take the package back to Vince,

- 27:10flattened myself under the hot shower. It felt so good. A fell asleep,
- 27:14and if Walt hadn't fallen, I'd have probably become the only man in
- 27:17history to drown in the shower. Walt shocked me wide awake with the news
- 27:22that he was holding a thousand dollars reward for me. I gave him my
- 27:25nicest thank you and made a mental note to drop by and give half of

- 33:19I actually had to listen to a couple of episodes. The one I listened
- 33:23prior to this was was just too funny that people think that was kind of
- 33:28representative of the series. This you kind of saw the way it typically balanced
- 33:34out here and pretty well plodded and with like I said, a great mix
- 33:39of the hard boiled and lighter elements. So a solid episode, and like
- 33:45I said, it will be coming down to you in the next couple of
- 33:47years, so it's something to look forward to, all right. Well,
