- 0:18All right, Good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon On a
- 0:21Wednesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network Iowa based programming
- 0:27Now from right now until 6 O clock because we have a big
- 0:30block coming up your way. Well Trent Connor, myself, Ken
- 0:33Miller, we will start things off and take you until 2O clock then
- 0:36off the bench with Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain overtime Iowa from
- 0:405:00 until 6. We've got a busy program lined
- 0:43up on this Wednesday. We will start with David Icolt.
- 0:46He will recap what he heard from Kirk Ference yesterday.
- 0:50Some positive news, I think, when it comes to the Hawks,
- 0:53pursuant to some of the skill positions, getting a major,
- 0:57major piece back potentially. We'll talk to David Eicholt
- 1:00about that coming up here in 25 minutes.
- 1:03And then Mitch Holtis, the voice of the windless Kansas City
- 1:07Chiefs. Well, you love that?
- 1:09Sure do. Music to my ears and I'm
- 1:11guessing to a lot of people's ears as well.
- 1:13Enjoy it. Well, we can and we promise that
- 1:15we will as they will go to take on the Giants Sunday Night
- 1:19Football here tonight, are coming up on Sunday rather.
- 1:22So we'll talk to Mitch about the Chiefs and what they do to get
- 1:25back in the wind. Call him.
- 1:26Perhaps it's the other team on the other side of the field that
- 1:29will help significantly. We shall see.
- 1:31Our number 2 off to Chicago, David Kaplan in his regular
- 1:35spot. A lot on the Bears and their
- 1:38predicament. The Cubs, they can clinch a
- 1:40playoff spot today. They are currently on the field
- 1:44playing the Phillies. This game started early and a
- 1:47lot of runs already up on the board.
- 1:49Cubs put up a four spot in their half of the first inning.
- 1:53The Pirates have countered with three and they are still batting
- 1:58as Matthew Boyd. Will's coming off a little bit
- 2:01with him lately. Your day one starter is going to
- 2:04be Kate Horton. Yes, I agree.
- 2:06There's no doubt about it. He is your number one did.
- 2:09You see him last night. Yes, my God.
- 2:11And your number two, we thought for a while was going to be Boyd
- 2:15I. Am It's Menaga.
- 2:17Menaga. Yep, then Tayon or then Boyd.
- 2:22Tyone's Matthew Boyd's been such a big part of this team being
- 2:27where they are, but it's here and now.
- 2:29That's a good that's a good question.
- 2:30That's one to file a way and ask a one O 2 with Kathy or when we
- 2:33get to the Cubs 'cause we have to start with the.
- 2:35Bears and certainly when if it's a game three season on the line
- 2:39against the Padres, you want Tyone, you want Boyd, Cabbie
- 2:44Tayon right now. I think so.
- 2:46We're still a few weeks away. I think so.
- 2:47Ian Hap is homered. Moisis Byasteros has homered as
- 2:51well, apparently. And by the way, we will talk to
- 2:55Matt Postons at 1:30 following Cappy.
- 2:57He covers the Big 12 and Oh my, do they have a big one at 11:00
- 3:01our time, 10:00 mountain time. Utah and Texas Tech in a big
- 3:06clash in the Big 12. So that's what we are going to
- 3:10do. Apparently there's some
- 3:12troubling news when it comes to Kyle Tucker, who's now flown to
- 3:16Florida. Getting some more doctors
- 3:18opinions there. Usually when you go for a second
- 3:21opinion, the first one wasn't what you wanted to hear as I
- 3:25found that as a Blue Jays fan with Boba Shett in the last 48
- 3:29hours, and that doesn't appear to be good.
- 3:30And now the news is not good for the Cubs right fielder.
- 3:33At least that's what I guess what Cubs fans are bracing
- 3:36themselves for as he flies to Florida for another opinion on
- 3:39that calf that has been ailing him.
- 3:42So we shall see. But the Cubs try to get things
- 3:44done today punched their ticket to the playoffs.
- 3:46They're home free and the wild card way up on top.
- 3:49They will be the four seed in the playoffs once they get
- 3:53underway. What a week from Monday or
- 3:56Tuesday do you know? Don't know.
- 3:59Do they start? The season ends on Sunday.
- 4:02Right. I think it's Tuesday.
- 4:04I. Think it's Tuesday as well.
- 4:05And then they don't travel, so it's Bing bang boom either.
- 4:09You play, you know if you win them both, it's over.
- 4:11The longest thing goes best of three.
- 4:13Tuesday, September 30th is when things will begin.
- 4:17And the if it goes to the Game 7, does it reach into November
- 4:22this year? Game seven of the World Series,
- 4:25as I Scroll down to the bottom, is scheduled for Saturday,
- 4:29November 1st. Saturday.
- 4:33Come on man, college football going on you.
- 4:38Just wait till Tuesday for a Game 7.
- 4:39That would exactly right. Is it going to kill you?
- 4:43What's 2 days going to make a difference?
- 4:45Oh my God, where's it going to be held?
- 4:47It will be held in Dodger Stadium.
- 4:50You really still, but you're dying on that.
- 4:53Did you see the Dodgers last night at all?
- 4:55I did. I watched a ton of it.
- 4:57I I watched, you know, innings 1234 and 5.
- 5:00Oh, and then it changed. Apparently because I got up this
- 5:03morning and I, I was blown away. Yes.
- 5:05I mean, no, Tony had a no, no going through five.
- 5:07I knew they weren't going to let him stay.
- 5:08In no, Absolutely, nor should they.
- 5:10I agree, but is that by the way, is that the furthest he's gone?
- 5:14I meant to look that up this morning because he hasn't had a
- 5:16lot I don't think. And if he has, they've been
- 5:19recent 5 inning stints, he's usually been in and out, but
- 5:24last night he was going, I mean he was going big time last
- 5:27night. So he no hit the Phillies, a
- 5:30pretty good ball club in their own right. 68 pitches for Otani.
- 5:34That's what he had. And prior to that, do you know
- 5:36what he is he top 70? Well, when I clicked on the game
- 5:38log here on my little app, yeah, it gave me a hitting game log.
- 5:42So jeez, he's different. He's the one he.
- 5:46Absolutely is. All right, let's see if we can
- 5:47find the game log for Otani pitching this year.
- 5:51That's what we're we're looking for as we scroll through.
- 5:54There's his batting, there's his pitching, career stats.
- 5:57Where do you got your game log at?
- 5:59Because what is a likely scenario?
- 6:02I mean, we talked. Dave Roberts said he's a
- 6:04starter. 80. Pitches for him.
- 6:06Yeah, when we get to the playoffs.
- 6:08What did you say 68 yesterday 60?
- 6:108 was the high I believe, Yes. Yeah, I think so.
- 6:15I mean, it's been obviously depending on how he's doing, but
- 6:17but yesterday could have done any better.
- 6:19My God, top at 100 miles an hour movement on that bench.
- 6:22Now there were a couple hard hit balls.
- 6:23I got it here. Here is his game.
- 6:25Run this down for me. All right, so innings pitched,
- 6:29he went 5, two starts to go against Cincinnati.
- 6:32That was August 27th that he went five in that one, threw 87
- 6:36pitches in that game. So that is, yes, the high
- 6:39watermark that he threw in that start two starts ago.
- 6:44So yeah, we might be pushing towards.
- 6:46So 85, so he's two starts back was in August.
- 6:50August 27th. And yesterday was September the
- 6:5416th, so it's not like he's an every five days pitcher.
- 6:58Yeah, this is the first start he has made since September 5th on
- 7:02the bump where he threw 70 pitches against the Ori.
- 7:05Erring in the side of caution or on the side of caution, which
- 7:08you certainly understand. Well, and now looking at his
- 7:10last three starts we're talking about, you know, he just hasn't
- 7:13looked well, he looked great last night.
- 7:14He was so good in that start against the Orioles, his last
- 7:18start, he didn't give up an earner on three hits and three
- 7:21and 2/3. The one before that against the
- 7:23Reds, when he threw his most pitches, he gave up one earned
- 7:26run in that game and five innings pitched.
- 7:28Maybe Ohtani is rounding into form.
- 7:30Yeah, we'll see at the right time.
- 7:32Boy, look, and I hope you're right.
- 7:34I selfishly, I hope, well, selfishly, but the Blue Jays
- 7:36win. But if they don't my for my for
- 7:39my sports betting app, if it is the Dodgers, that would be music
- 7:42to to my ears. Yeah, I was.
- 7:44I was blown away because the Phillies are a good team.
- 7:46Phillies are a good team and they're going to start Lefty
- 7:48lefty left when it comes when they begin the playoffs.
- 7:51So we'll see where that one goes.
- 7:53We'll keep you apprised on that as they end the first inning
- 7:56with the Cubs up 4. Three, I got sucked in last
- 7:58night. The twins come back.
- 8:00Now I saw they were chipping away.
- 8:01How close did they get? They were within three.
- 8:03There was a home run to cut it to 9/6.
- 8:06Maybe Larnick hit a blast to cut it in the 9th to 10/9.
- 8:10Really. It was 10/9, had a couple of
- 8:13guys up there. I think Clemens was maybe one of
- 8:15them. Cody Clemens, Yeah.
- 8:17He'd been pretty good. Reclamation Project.
- 8:19Absolutely. For a guy that looked like an
- 8:20absolute last 'cause he's only there because of his last name,
- 8:23he's turned into A league average player, which is a step
- 8:27forward from anything I think anybody would have anticipated
- 8:30out of him. Yeah, Clemens came up and then
- 8:32it was Royce Lewis struck out to end the ball game, but down 10,
- 8:35nothing. Come roaring back 10-9 and they
- 8:37suck me in a game. I wonder how many people are in
- 8:39the ballpark at the end of it, just to see that come back.
- 8:43A lot of Yankee fans I'm. Sure, right.
- 8:45Yeah, absolutely. It's a good thing that the
- 8:46Yankees were in town because especially, you know, teams that
- 8:50are hopelessly out of it and as I guess the Kansas City Royals
- 8:54would now fit into that category.
- 8:57And, and what we're seeing when it comes to to Cal Raleigh, is
- 9:02he the American League MVP? How could he not be?
- 9:06I this is something that we have this conversation often.
- 9:11Because Judge seemingly was overwhelmed.
- 9:14Devin, we'll get to you in just a second.
- 9:15I want to hear what you have to say.
- 9:17It's Most Valuable Player, it's not best stats, it's not best
- 9:22WAR, which unfortunately it's turned into because that's an
- 9:25easy way to kind of. Just a factor in your mind that
- 9:27the Mariners are going to win their division and the Yankees
- 9:30will not. That is a big part of it.
- 9:33That is when you're talking about value, you take care and
- 9:36judge off that team. I still think they're a playoff
- 9:39team, at least on the fringes of the playoffs.
- 9:42Well. He's missed some time, too.
- 9:43You take Cal Rally off that team.
- 9:45No, no, God. Forsaken, they're hanging out
- 9:47with the A's and the Angels. Well, they're a little better,
- 9:50maybe. That's value.
- 9:54That guy also plays a premium position at catcher and he's out
- 9:58there for a catcher a ton. I don't know, defensive.
- 10:02I don't have those metrics handy.
- 10:03What he is as a defender, he broke a.
- 10:05Record that was held by Mickey Mantle.
- 10:08That's one the switch hitting home run record that just takes
- 10:13it to another sphere for me. Maybe it shouldn't.
- 10:15And then his next home run also, was it a club record?
- 10:18Did he beat Griffey's club record?
- 10:20I think so. Yeah, with his second home run
- 10:21of the game yesterday, he's got to be the MV.
- 10:24Is is Judge still the choice, by the way?
- 10:26Oh, I would anticipate. Yeah, he's still.
- 10:29It was pretty significant. I he was pretty significant and
- 10:32I thought maybe I mean that might be worth looking into.
- 10:36All right, let's get Devin in here.
- 10:38I Cal, that's got to be a the prices had to be narrowed.
- 10:43Yeah, you have to Devin. Well, let me hit the right
- 10:46button here, Devin. It's my first day.
- 10:48Hi, Devin. How are you?
- 10:50I'm doing well. And real quick, before I get to
- 10:52my comment, yeah, Kenny, I want to make sure I tell you this.
- 10:55Congrats on your retirement. Thank you buddy.
- 10:57I I never listened to sports radio until I moved to Des
- 11:00Moines last year. You guys were the first show I
- 11:02listened to and I love, I've loved it ever since.
- 11:04So Congrats to you, truly the godfather of sports radio.
- 11:08It's been an awesome hearing for the last couple of last year
- 11:10rather. Thank you very much.
- 11:12You bet. So you mentioned about a month
- 11:15ago you guys were talking about like when it comes to playoff
- 11:17time for the Cubs, you were like, is Kate Horton the third
- 11:19guy? Boy, is he saying Ken Miller?
- 11:22Hold my beard. He is absolutely insane.
- 11:25And I got a stat here I want to read off.
- 11:27So over his last 11 starts, Kate Horton is 8 and one.
- 11:31He's just allowed six total runs in the entire span.
- 11:34The last time, last in the modern era.
- 11:36The only other Major League pitcher to have 8 plus wins and
- 11:39six or fewer runs allowed over an 11 start span is Bob Gibson
- 11:43in 1968. I saw that one last night.
- 11:46Bob Gibson in 68, It's unbelievable.
- 11:49He was so good. And he got beat in the World
- 11:50Series by Mickey Lulich. Oh really?
- 11:53He was the MVP. Tigers beat him that year.
- 11:55That's a really good stat, Devin.
- 11:56He's special, isn't he? I mean he really interested.
- 11:59It's insane, yeah. Skene got the top of the marquee
- 12:01in the billing for that game last night.
- 12:03Horton stole the show. Oh yeah.
- 12:06Yeah. It was unbelievable.
- 12:07Enjoy the show guys. Devin, thank you for listening.
- 12:09Thanks, Devin. Certainly appreciate.
- 12:11It here's another Kate Horton stat for you for go back to
- 12:142015. You remember how nuts Jake
- 12:16Arrieta was in the back half of the?
- 12:18Year. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:19That year, through 11 starts, Arrieta had nine wins at the ERA
- 12:22of. Zero post All Star break.
- 12:23This was yes post All Star break. 0.93 ERA.
- 12:29Kate Horton haven't started since the All Star break.
- 12:31Eight wins, a 0.93 ERA. The exact same ERA that Arietta
- 12:35had that season. Kate Horton is special.
- 12:38No, he really is. He truly is.
- 12:41It's going to be fun to watch his career unfold and he has
- 12:43arrived in a big, big spot. So he's the one.
- 12:47Managa 2. Tie on three.
- 12:50You think it's tie on? I think so.
- 12:52Did you see what they did at the end of the game last night?
- 12:54So my guy, Kittridge had been closing.
- 12:57Uh huh he came in in the 6th or no he cause Horton pitched 6 so
- 13:02he must have come in in the 7th and then they went to Keller at
- 13:07the back of the game up 41 to get.
- 13:09The save so. Keller not got those
- 13:11opportunities. All right, we've got these
- 13:12numbers. These just came to the baseball.
- 13:14Benny, he opened his app. Do you have yours?
- 13:16For the American League MVP. Yes.
- 13:18Is judge -900 on your? That's crazy. -900 for Aaron
- 13:23Judge, Cal Raleigh Plus 470. 5 What am I missing?
- 13:31What? What is where is Judge
- 13:33statistically that much better than Cal Raleigh?
- 13:37Well, if you're a believer in war, and I know a lot of the
- 13:41voters are, Aaron Judge, far and away wins that character.
- 13:45Trendy can't throw the ball from right field to the second
- 13:47baseman. He's hurt.
- 13:49Offensive war and 8.3 Defensive. He's a negative, a zero point, a
- 13:53negative 0.6 for Aaron Judge. Overall, though, 8.4 That's more
- 13:57than a full win than second place on the list.
- 14:00Next up, Paul Skins, Chris Sanchez, those are the next two
- 14:05Cal Raleigh's six and wins above replacement.
- 14:08A defensive he also -0.1 or yeah, 0.1 for him.
- 14:13Still getting away from the war statistic.
- 14:16It's Cal Raleigh. And he's plus 475.
- 14:20You're going to take a stab. So.
- 14:23Pet post puffed tonight I I field it.
- 14:26He's got 56 home runs. What if he hit 60 right?
- 14:32Does that change the dynamic? I think it would I there's those
- 14:35round numbers definitely help things.
- 14:37So here's the numbers for Aaron. I'm floored by this.
- 14:39I really am. That, that's that he's -900 You
- 14:42have to bet $900 to make 100. He's batting 326.
- 14:46Judges 48 homers, 103RB, IOPS 1.127.
- 14:51I mean, that's that's ridiculous.
- 14:52Alright, here's Cal Rowley, his numbers in comparison.
- 14:55As a catcher, he's batting 247. OK, Yeah. 56 home runs, 118 RBI,
- 15:02OPS951. Pretty big dip in comparison
- 15:09between. How many of the 100 and how many
- 15:11games has has Cal Raleigh played?
- 15:13It's a great 140. What?
- 15:15He has 100 and he's played 148 this.
- 15:18Year has he really and how do they played $1.50?
- 15:21Probably, yeah. That's about what?
- 15:22How many he caught? Don't have that.
- 15:25So that's a pro, that's a a pro baseball reference number.
- 15:30So he's behind the plate night in and night out most nights.
- 15:33I'm sure he's D aged a little bit.
- 15:35I mean, they got to give the poorest some time off.
- 15:39And see if I can find the number not readily available.
- 15:41Didn't jump up here What he's actually caught this season I.
- 15:45Think go down to his fielding if memory serves on that.
- 15:49For reference, standard batting value, advanced batting, post
- 15:55season batting appearances, standard fielding there.
- 15:57You go. Here we are. 114 games behind
- 16:00the plate, 34 as the designated hitter.
- 16:04You got to take a shot, don't you?
- 16:06I think So what? Do they have left?
- 16:08Do they have Seattle? Yeah.
- 16:10Do you know? I got their schedule right here.
- 16:12So they will wrap up at the Royals the next two days.
- 16:17Then they go to Houston, which will be a monster affair.
- 16:21Yeah, well, for that division. Oh my God, that's a huge series.
- 16:24They get the Rockies. No, don't they?
- 16:26They get the Rockies. They don't go to the Rockies.
- 16:28They get the Rockies at home in Seattle, and then they're home
- 16:32for the Dodgers. Oh my God.
- 16:34Which could be an important series.
- 16:36Yes. For both teams, more of a
- 16:39spotlight opportunity against a name brand.
- 16:41For I would guess that they'll probably be national television.
- 16:45That'll also be a part of it. The thing's that over.
- 16:48If he gets to 60. 6060 is the number.
- 16:52I think that's it. I really do.
- 16:54If he can, if he can find a way to put 60 up there, OK, I, I
- 16:59guess I, I, I wouldn't have guessed that the numbers are so
- 17:04far in favor of Judge that way. But man, look what he's doing as
- 17:11a catcher. How many games has Aaron Judge
- 17:14been the DH? Oh, that's a great question too.
- 17:16Let's get Thunder Joe in here. Thunder Joe, welcome to the
- 17:20program. How are you, Joe?
- 17:23You're retiring June 24th, 30 years.
- 17:27Oh, you're retiring in 30 years, so I'll be 70.
- 17:29Four No, No, no, no, no, no. No, I like how you're talking.
- 17:33I like how you're talking. In June 24th it will be 30 years
- 17:36and that's the day. So I got nine months left.
- 17:39I've been living here since listening to you, since Chrysler
- 17:41was a corporal. Thank you, buddy.
- 17:43Thank you, man. I mean, OK, let's make a case
- 17:45for the big dumper now. Great nickname by the way,
- 17:48right? Doesn't that come into play?
- 17:51That's the MVP name right there hand in the award yes, so so I
- 17:56got I got kinfolk that we don't talk baseball, but I do have a
- 17:59relative that is the president of baseball operations for the
- 18:02Mariners. Oh really?
- 18:03Now that's cool. Now, now my question is, does
- 18:07Jerry Depoto go out and make those moves for Suarez and
- 18:10Naylor if he does not have Raleigh?
- 18:14No. You know, you know, that's
- 18:18pretty good. Plus 475 Joe get your attention.
- 18:24Yeah, I mean, I throw 1000 on it.
- 18:26I'm one too. I mean, I think it's worth the
- 18:28play. No, not, not to that level, but
- 18:31Thunder. Joe's units are a little bit
- 18:33different than ours, really. Spending all that Thunder
- 18:34Championship ticket, I get any cash?
- 18:37That's good stuff, Joe. Thanks.
- 18:39Go ahead. Anything else?
- 18:41Actually I won. I won a lot on when I got in on
- 18:43SDA on the MVP I got in a week 1.
- 18:47Actually made pretty good money on that.
- 18:49Good for you, good for you, but. Real quick in baseball, like is
- 18:52the vote, is the voters going to get judged fatigue like they
- 18:54get. I hope so.
- 18:56I hope so. Judges DH54 games this year.
- 18:59Baseball Benny, just text me. Well, look at, look at, look at
- 19:01the DH, look at the DH position. It's giving Kyle Schwarber a
- 19:04job. Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 19:06And he does it pretty well. Thanks, Joe.
- 19:08Appreciate it. Good to hear from you.
- 19:10Well, we'll see. Pretty good, pretty good
- 19:12conversation. We talked baseball here 'cause,
- 19:14after all, Trent baseball. Tuesdays and.
- 19:16Wednesdays and Wednesdays are for baseball here on Miller and.
- 19:19Conn and a little WNBA last night.
- 19:20From you did. I did.
- 19:21Did you watch the Fever? Not much of the fever.
- 19:24It was more of my well, I had Seattle last night.
- 19:26Are you? Aware of the controversy around
- 19:28the Rookie of the Year, the way that the award was was handed
- 19:31out. There, There wouldn't be a day
- 19:32ending in why if there wasn't controversy in that league.
- 19:35Good. And and particularly focused on
- 19:37that girl, but that woman, it's it's unbelievable.
- 19:41They literally Christy sides the coach.
- 19:46Last year, the fever held up her iPhone on speaker for Kathy
- 19:50Engelhardt, the commissioner of the WNBA to announce that
- 19:54Caitlin Clark was the rookie of the year.
- 19:56Well, that's going out of your way, right?
- 19:59This year she got in an airplane.
- 20:01She flew to where her page Becker's squad was, wherever
- 20:05that is. If they're on the road, I'm not
- 20:06sure. And they did a big to do with
- 20:09cameras and everything to award her the rookie of the year.
- 20:13She plays for Dallas, right? They didn't win 10 games this
- 20:15year. They didn't win 10 games and 1st
- 20:18rookie of the year ever to come from a team that doesn't win 10
- 20:21games. Now we know Caitlin was the
- 20:23runaway winner. Pete Becker's was a runaway
- 20:25winner. And she slam dunk.
- 20:28She got 70 of the 72 first place votes.
- 20:31Now we'll never know who those voters are.
- 20:33Oh, God forbid. I'm guessing when Mike Pom joins
- 20:35us on Friday, he'll make us. God, that bugs him, doesn't It?
- 20:38Does. We will be joined by David Icult
- 20:40next. Mitch Holt is still to come.
- 20:41Glad you're with us on a Wednesday, Miller and Condon on
- 20:44the Iowa Sports Radio Network. All right, 1230, welcome back
- 20:56Miller and Condon High Sports Radio Network.
- 20:58Trent Condon and Ken Miller with you until 2.
- 21:01Mitch Holt is still to come. This hour, the voice radio voice
- 21:04of the Kansas City Chiefs, David Eichold covers the Hawks 24/7
- 21:07sports hawkeyeinsider.com and he joined us long time.
- 21:11David Eichold, how are you? Doing all right, man.
- 21:15I'm, I'm, I'm actually happy it's a Friday game because you
- 21:19guys know in this business when you're, when you're covering it.
- 21:21Hell yeah. A Saturday game, especially the
- 21:23night games, you really don't get a chance to watch a lot of
- 21:26college football. So as I was telling Trent off
- 21:28the air, I'm excited to get all my work done Saturday morning
- 21:32and I'm just going to sit on my couch or maybe cruise the bar
- 21:35scene and watch college football.
- 21:37No, don't blame you. Don't blame me a bit.
- 21:39And there's some big games, obviously, the Big 10, NBC Prime
- 21:42timer, Illinois and Indiana certainly has a little cachet.
- 21:46But as you mentioned, some pretty big game in for the sake
- 21:50of our state on Friday night with Iowa travelling to Rutgers.
- 21:54And there's some good news and some bad news of that position,
- 21:56right, when it comes to Kamari Moulton being back.
- 22:00And he is absolutely going to play according to Kirk Ference
- 22:03or he's been cleared to play. We'll see if he does.
- 22:06But Xavier Williams, on the other hand, news not so good
- 22:09there. So let's start there, David.
- 22:12Yeah, obviously, you know, Kirk kind of made a funny joke where
- 22:15he talked about he would rather prefer not to have a prisoner
- 22:18exchange, as he called it, Xavier Williams getting out and
- 22:22then Kamari Moulton coming back in.
- 22:24But you know, Kamari Moulton is the guy that we all thought I
- 22:27had a chance to have a really big breakout year, done a lot of
- 22:30the right things in the offseason, got a chance to stay
- 22:32out. Caleb Johnson operated last year
- 22:35and had a few strong games for Iowa.
- 22:37But to get Kumari Moulton back, it finally feels like there's
- 22:40some health news that that's going in favor of Iowa because,
- 22:43you know, Iowa was so healthy going into the season.
- 22:46And ever since that feels like the Reese Vander, the weird
- 22:49situation that he got himself into and he is going to miss
- 22:53another game. By the way, he'll be out next
- 22:55week. It's kind of in a downward
- 22:56trajectory. So for Iowa to get Moulton back,
- 22:59obviously losing Xavier Williams, the team's leading
- 23:01rusher, is is a bummer. But Moulton, I feel like the
- 23:04team's best all around back. I think you're getting a lot out
- 23:07Jazz Patterson and he's really comfortable with his role and
- 23:11he's going to be a frequent contributor there.
- 23:13I don't think you're worried too much about the depth of the
- 23:16rangback room and the guy that I would like to see a little bit
- 23:18more of. I don't know if you guys are the
- 23:20same opinion. I'd love to see freshman Nathan
- 23:22McNeil continue to get some reps, but I know you probably
- 23:25don't want to burn his red shirt.
- 23:26But he just moves differently. He has a lot of maturity in his
- 23:31game for being a true freshman. But I'll be very, very intrigued
- 23:34about how that kind of snap count goes.
- 23:36Are they going to throw back in Kamari, you know, carrying the
- 23:39ball 20 times? Or are they going to say, hey,
- 23:42you know what? We're going to give him 11:50
- 23:43carries. Then maybe they try to get TJ
- 23:46Washington going again. He hasn't had a start that he
- 23:48would like. Are they going to rely a lot on
- 23:50Jazz Patterson? Are they going to throw the ball
- 23:52more? It's definitely one of the
- 23:54bigger, I think, storylines hanging to this one.
- 23:55But yes, news rang back. One is back for the first time
- 24:00since I I believe he left the first game after the first
- 24:03drive. So to get him back is is
- 24:04definitely a big deal. One of the things Kirk mentioned
- 24:07yesterday was special teams. People probably will just
- 24:11remember Kate Weechin and the outstanding performance he had.
- 24:14But a block punt, a missed extra point, a missed field goal,
- 24:17snaps look shaky. I would can't afford that.
- 24:21Take us back to Kirk yesterday and you could tell that one,
- 24:24that one is rankling him a little bit because Iowa, they
- 24:26can't afford not to be great in special teams.
- 24:30You have to be great orally in the special teams and on defense
- 24:33if your offense is not balanced and frequently getting the ball
- 24:37down the field right. And I think special teams, I
- 24:40think for the right reasons. We were not talking a lot about
- 24:43it pre season because I don't know about you guys.
- 24:45I chalked them up as having a top five special teams in the
- 24:47country, top three even between Restake, in between Drew
- 24:52Stevens, between, you know, the returning Jet Award winner and
- 24:54Kane Weed. It just seemed like things have
- 24:57been missing. And those small miscues, I mean,
- 24:59the missed extra point, the block point, the lack of returns
- 25:03or execution against Iowa State, like that will cost Iowa games
- 25:08and Big 10 play. Because he talked about Iowa
- 25:11doing the small things, right, winning games in such weird
- 25:14ways, right? How many times the special teams
- 25:16been a major part of that. I think you have to give Lavar
- 25:19Woods the benefit of the doubt. I think you have to give Kirk
- 25:21Ferris the benefit of the doubt. But you could tell like Kirk was
- 25:24very, very pressed about it and kind of analyzing Kirk over the
- 25:27last few years, guys, I don't know if you've picked up on the
- 25:30same pattern. My assumption when it comes to
- 25:32Kirk Ference and criticism he gives his teams is based on the
- 25:36level he expects them to operate at.
- 25:39When I was passing offense was not good over the last few years
- 25:43when it was whether it be K McNamara, Deacon Hill or a
- 25:46couple other guys, he really would not criticize or hold
- 25:49accountable the passing offense. And I believe it's because he
- 25:52had no expectations for them. I think when you see this year,
- 25:55you look at the special teams, when you look at the passing
- 25:58offense, he's been fairly critical, directly critical of
- 26:01them more times than I can remember.
- 26:03And I think it's because he expected them to be farther
- 26:05along and executing cleaner. So I think he's challenging his
- 26:08team and there's no doubt that he's challenging special teams
- 26:11to to kind of get back together going into Big 10 play.
- 26:14Oh, and. It goes back to something you
- 26:15said David, back to the running back position when it comes to
- 26:18Nathan McNeil. Do you know if if if Ference and
- 26:21and and the player have had that red shirt discussion is to is to
- 26:24know in a perfect world what what the team would like, what
- 26:27he would like. I'm sure McNeil would like to
- 26:29play if he had ultimately the final call.
- 26:33Do you know if they've talked? I don't know if there's been a
- 26:37decision made, but I I'll say this, I think especially if
- 26:39you're running back, what do we always talk about the short show
- 26:43when it comes to running backs? I mean, I'm not going to blame
- 26:45him at all if he wants to play right away, right, and get those
- 26:48reps And I think it's well deserved because you talk about
- 26:51running backs kind of washing out the league at what, 2930
- 26:54years old? There's a handful of backs still
- 26:56in the league. But anyway, the thing I will go
- 26:58back to is before the season, going into the Albany game, we
- 27:01asked about the freshman and he said everybody is kind of wait
- 27:05and see. But Nathan McNeil is kind of the
- 27:07only one we've green lit right now with the ultimate green
- 27:09light. That tells me that they don't
- 27:12plan on red shirting. And and honestly, with the way
- 27:14that the running back health has been so far, I think you got to
- 27:18continue to prepare unless you're going to play, right.
- 27:21So I don't know if there's been an exact decision made if
- 27:24they've talked, but based on the verbiage of Kirk, based on the
- 27:27reps he's gotten, I would be slightly surprised if he ended
- 27:31up redshirting this season. Definitely need that kind of
- 27:35skill out there. You talked to Mark Gronowski on
- 27:37Tuesday. Let's hear a little bit about
- 27:39the quarterback. Like a few of the things that we
- 27:41saw out of him. It does feel like they're taking
- 27:43steps forward with the caveat it was UMass.
- 27:46They're awful. Still, Gronowski going into this
- 27:49week, in the short week, Friday night against Rutgers, he's got
- 27:51to play well, I think, to get this road victory.
- 27:54So I think two things can be true, right?
- 27:56One, we're not going to take too much away from Iowa's passing
- 27:59performance against UMass, right?
- 28:01Like, let's keep it real here. That's what we do on this
- 28:04station. But #2 Iowa is not in a position
- 28:08to pick where it gets its momentum from or positive
- 28:10production from, especially in the passing game.
- 28:13So you can't really hold it against them.
- 28:14I do think Mark kind of got a swagger back.
- 28:16I think he's obviously a lot more comfortable.
- 28:18And I think Iowa's passing game as a whole has taken a step
- 28:21forward time and time again. And I'm of the unpopular
- 28:25opinion, I actually think Mark's probably the fourth biggest
- 28:28issue in the passing game right now.
- 28:29I think the route running is a big issue.
- 28:31And guys, how about the drops? I mean, Mark Garnowski's
- 28:35completion percentage would probably be in the mid 60s if
- 28:37they cleaned up half the drop. And I'm not talking about a drop
- 28:40like, oh, they have to jump up and try to make a miraculous
- 28:43catch. Oh, they're diving.
- 28:44They're hitting them right in the chest.
- 28:46They're hitting them right in the hand and they've not been
- 28:48able to haul it in. And I like perks message
- 28:50yesterday we said we call them wide receivers, not wide
- 28:52droppers. Like he knows that's an issue
- 28:55right now, but when it comes to Mark, I think he's clearly a lot
- 28:58more confident in what he's doing.
- 29:00I don't think he's pressing as much.
- 29:02You can tell he he kind of believe, he believes in what the
- 29:05team is being able to run. And I liked what he said when we
- 29:08asked him about the drops. We basically ask, hey, is there
- 29:11anything you can do when you throw the football or, or
- 29:13physically to kind of help out your guys?
- 29:15He said, no, not really, but I'm going to continue to encourage
- 29:18them. I'm not going to second guess
- 29:20myself when I throw them the ball.
- 29:22They need to know I have faith in them.
- 29:24And he said, I'm always going to be happy to stay late, you know,
- 29:27to throw them extra passes, make sure they're hitting the jug
- 29:30machines and kind of control what they can control.
- 29:33So I think from a leadership standpoint and all that, I think
- 29:36you're getting the right things out of him.
- 29:38I'm very interested because Rutgers defense has been shaky.
- 29:41I think Iowa is going to maintain that sort of aggressive
- 29:44mentality. I think they're going to test
- 29:45them down the field. But another thing that Greg
- 29:48Schiano, the Rutgers head coach, said yesterday is he stated Mark
- 29:51Granowski's running ability could give them a little bit
- 29:54double. And I'm kind of eyeballing that
- 29:56saying, hey, you know what that means?
- 29:58There might be some receivers left on the island.
- 30:00You might be able to take some shots down field.
- 30:02He might be able to run the full mesh.
- 30:04But Mark Gronowski is not going to shy away from Big 10
- 30:06physicality. And if you need 4 yards, he'll
- 30:09go out there and get you 5. But I do think Mark's feeling
- 30:12very confident hanging into the game.
- 30:14But it's a whole different animal.
- 30:16Big 10 football blackout. He's playing these games and
- 30:20ultimately guys, he's being paid to win these types of games, to
- 30:24win big 10 Rd. games. There is pressure on him, but I
- 30:27think he's in the best position possible given all the the
- 30:29context of everything else. Yeah, good Intel on Shiano.
- 30:32Did not hear that. Last, last thing.
- 30:35I thought Jayden Harrell had his best game as a hawk.
- 30:37I guess you got to put that caveat.
- 30:39Yeah, UMass, I get it. But a lot of criticism coming.
- 30:42He was his way. I thought he played pretty well
- 30:45on Saturday night. I I thought it was too.
- 30:48I think Harold is an interesting case because I always think he
- 30:51knows what's going on in terms of play recognition, but
- 30:54sometimes he's been a step so to recognize it.
- 30:56But again, that's the type of thing man, where that will kill
- 30:59you in Big 10 play. I think he's had some really
- 31:01good moments. I think he's had some low lights
- 31:02as well. I think this needs to be the
- 31:05week where he has his best all around game because if he can do
- 31:07it against Rutgers now again, albeit it's Rutgers, their
- 31:10offense has been pretty darn good this season.
- 31:13I know they've played, you know, Cal, Eastern University, Tech,
- 31:17Ohio and you know, some other cupcake, but they're executing.
- 31:20I think Kelly Mana says 7 touchdowns, no interceptions,
- 31:24completing 72% of his passes. I do think there's some pressure
- 31:28on Harold to to maintain that high level play and and to
- 31:31recognize those plays and be a step ahead of everything instead
- 31:34of trying to play catch up. But I'm right there with you.
- 31:36I think he played his best game against UMass, but I would like
- 31:40to see him get more tackles considering Iowa's defensive
- 31:44mentality in the way they approach everything.
- 31:46It's the funnel tackles to the linebackers and especially the
- 31:49Mike linebacker. He's leading the team in
- 31:51tackles, but he only has 19 through three games.
- 31:54I'd like to see him have a double digit game against
- 31:56Rutgers. Quick hit on this, just 30
- 31:58seconds left, Luke Brewer, a kid from just down the road from us
- 32:01in Norwalk reclassifying, big news, one of the type top tight
- 32:05ends in the country, Iowa State, Iowa, obviously involve Penn
- 32:08State, Tennessee, Miami. What are you hearing on his
- 32:11recruiting front and going a year early to the collegiate
- 32:14ranks? Yeah.
- 32:16I mean, I think that kind of changes iOS mentality because I
- 32:19really wasn't too sure they were going to take it 26 tight
- 32:22Enders. Two, I thought they were going
- 32:23to really focus in on Jax Dejean and Luke Brewer, but Brewers
- 32:26entering 26, I think you throw the bow to him.
- 32:29I think he's an elite prospect. I think he's a legitimate 4 star
- 32:31prospect, probably top 247 guy when it's all said and done if
- 32:35he has a big season. But yeah, you're exactly right.
- 32:38Tennessee, Penn State, Miami calling, I know Georgia's
- 32:40calling as well. Iowa State and Iowa, this is the
- 32:43guy that's going to rake in some big NIL dollars.
- 32:46And if I'm Iowa, with the way the side end room looks right
- 32:49now, I think you're right in my blank check because he has
- 32:51potential to be a really, really good college side end.
- 32:54David Eichel, 24/7 Sports, hawkeyeinsider.com David, thanks
- 32:58for popping. Appreciate it.
- 33:00Yeah. Thanks, guys.
- 33:01Appreciate you. Take care.
- 33:02Talk to you. Enjoy the weekend watching
- 33:04college football. Mitch Holtis joins us next.
- 33:06Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:13Henry Condon, welcome back to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:16Wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa, grateful that you
- 33:19are. Mitch Holt is the voice of the
- 33:20Chiefs. He sponsored each and every
- 33:22week. Although we don't hear from
- 33:24Mitch on bye weeks, got to give him some time off Papa John's
- 33:27Central Iowa makes this spot possible.
- 33:29Mitch, Trent and Ken Giants this week, and we'll get to that in a
- 33:32second. I guess a couple of areas I want
- 33:35to talk to you about. That's the running game first
- 33:38and foremost. Obviously it's not ideal to have
- 33:41the quarterback leading the team by significant margin.
- 33:45I mean, he's gifted running. There's no doubt about it.
- 33:47When a play breaks down, it's most of the time going to end up
- 33:49being a first down. But still, what do they need to
- 33:53do to get this running game going, Mitch?
- 33:57Well, and your point is well taken.
- 34:00Right now, Patrick Mahomes has more rushing yards than
- 34:03everybody else in the team combined, and that's not good.
- 34:07When you look at, you know, the guys that are potential to run
- 34:11the ball, I think that there's got to be an emphasis on the
- 34:17runs called and then being committed to it to some extent.
- 34:23The 4th and one play at their own 36.
- 34:25They go to old school T formation, but they run a wide
- 34:27sweep which takes count count instead of just going straight
- 34:31ahead. And sometimes in the league,
- 34:34especially with the way that teams are playing the Chiefs,
- 34:37that it's OK to get 3 to 3 1/2 yards and just go straight
- 34:42ahead. Leads powered enough to run
- 34:44counters. Counters don't work unless you
- 34:46can run a play side lead in power.
- 34:48So I think answer your question, it's a very good 1 and in many
- 34:52ways a key on Sunday Night Football against the Giants.
- 34:55But straight ahead runs, commit to it.
- 34:59Even if there's just one drive, you're going to commit to try to
- 35:02get 4 yards on three runs, I get you a first down.
- 35:05But to do that kind of sets the tone and hopefully sets the
- 35:08table for everything else. You look back, there are
- 35:10opportunities against the Chargers, there are
- 35:12opportunities certainly this past week against the Eagles.
- 35:15It's it's O and two, but it doesn't feel like Owen 2 for a
- 35:18lot of different teams. What's the mood inside the
- 35:21locker room and knowing a three consecutive losses dating back
- 35:24to the Super Bowl, something that hasn't happened in Mahomes
- 35:27career. What's it like though, inside
- 35:29that locker room right now? It's actually very good and
- 35:34that's not to wave a pom pom and say OK, hey, it's all good.
- 35:38But this team has gone through, especially with Andy Reid,
- 35:41starts with Andy Reid. Every year people forget you
- 35:43guys, the flashpoints the Chiefs have gone through.
- 35:46I don't know, 2021 there were three and four after seven
- 35:49weeks. In 2019 there were six and four
- 35:52and reeling. Lost three home games, 2023 nine
- 35:56and six in December. So it's not like this is
- 35:59unprecedented, but you also have and actually right behind Andy's
- 36:04Mahomes Patrick. This is his birthday, by the
- 36:06way, his 30th birthday today. Happy birthday, Patrick.
- 36:09Monday night he was on the Chiefs Kingdom show and a lot of
- 36:11our affiliates heard him basically answer that himself
- 36:15because I asked him the same question.
- 36:17But it's being on task in banding together even more
- 36:22instead of trying to fracture. So it's you're right now.
- 36:26I'd say this the first game felt like Owen one.
- 36:29The second game did not feel like Owen 2.
- 36:31The Chiefs should have beating the Eagles.
- 36:32Eagles were good but it was there.
- 36:34It boiled down to 3 plays. And by the way, I put this out
- 36:37on social Monday, I had to check this over and over and over
- 36:40again. Like this can't be right.
- 36:41The Chiefs have never won on the road against the Giants.
- 36:44Ever. What?
- 36:45They're all in. Seven since 1960.
- 36:48This franchise started as the Dallas Texans in the AFL.
- 36:51It is the only team of the 31 teams other than the Chiefs in
- 36:55the NFL that can't beat themselves.
- 36:57They have not beaten on the road.
- 36:59The Giants, the G man, That's it.
- 37:01The only one left. Although the Denver Broncos beat
- 37:04themselves this past Sunday, Mitch will save that for another
- 37:06day, that's for sure. Been there, done.
- 37:11I hear ya. Hey, I want to ask you about the
- 37:13tush push and I know that I just don't like it.
- 37:17I don't it's it's not football. I get it.
- 37:19Then stop it. That's the pushback.
- 37:22But a, they were they were they lined up on every single one.
- 37:27I don't like it, Mitch. And yet the league voted to keep
- 37:31it in this this past offseason and I was surprised that
- 37:34happened. But is it here to stay?
- 37:38Well, I think they didn't vote it out because there's they're
- 37:40trying to figure out how to legislate it.
- 37:42How do you do it not have loopholes?
- 37:44Now here's where I'm at on the tush push.
- 37:47I think you have 7 officials. You know, the headlines went in
- 37:50the down line. The down judge stands 27 yards
- 37:54away from the ball. OK, so think about basketball.
- 37:58Think about I can care if it's Drake, Iowa State, Northern
- 38:00Iowa, Iowa, whoever's playing or Central DeWitt Sabres.
- 38:04So I'm going to mention because Casey critters their long
- 38:06snapper for the New York Giants out of the Central DeWitt High
- 38:09School Sabres. Way to go.
- 38:10Yeah, you got it, baby. Anytime I throw that in there
- 38:13all. Right.
- 38:14Here's the point. Here's the point.
- 38:15You do a basketball game, you have a lead official, a trail
- 38:18official and AC official. They follow the ball.
- 38:21They don't stand in one place. I might be the trail official,
- 38:24but I'm moving with the ball and with the players.
- 38:27If you're going to run the tush push, why does the downed
- 38:30linesman and the head or the line judge stay where they're
- 38:34at? They should move in as far as
- 38:37the closest outside player because they can't see it.
- 38:41There's too many things in front of them to go.
- 38:43Oh my gosh, that's a false start.
- 38:44Now the camera picks it up, but the cameras can zoom in.
- 38:48These guys are 27 yards away, and so why can't you?
- 38:52The official if you're going to run the tush push, then I get to
- 38:55move in as far as a yard outside the tight end.
- 38:58If someone motions to me or they switch the formation, then I've
- 39:01got to back up just like a basketball official.
- 39:04But for the life of me, the NFL drives me crazy with some
- 39:06things. Why would you have a tush push
- 39:08formation? And I stand over by the down
- 39:11marker, thinking this is where I'm supposed to be, where I
- 39:14could mark it better, see it better, call it either legal or
- 39:17illegal if I get as close as I can.
- 39:19Yeah, helmets and shoulder pads and blah blah blah in the way.
- 39:23Yeah, exactly 30 seconds left. Let's talk about Papa John's.
- 39:28Let me also. Yeah, I am.
- 39:29Then this is ironic. This is ironic because this
- 39:32week's Special Boys is the extra large, wait for it, New York
- 39:37style pizza from Papa John's. Timing is everything.
- 39:41Irony and it's only one topping only 999.
- 39:44I'm staying extra large. We're going with the big lineman
- 39:47here, extra large, New York style, one topping only 999.
- 39:51She's are going to try to win and got them for the first time
- 39:53ever. Had no idea.
- 39:55And it doesn't get much easier as here come the Here come the
- 39:58Ravens next. Week.
- 39:59Don't even bring it up. Don't even bring it up.
- 40:01We're going to win a game. He's never been owing 3.
- 40:03He was owing 3 as a Philly coach of 99.
- 40:05That's. It good stuff Much, Mitch.
- 40:07Thank you, buddy. We'll talk to you next week.
- 40:08See ya. Yep, Mitch Holtz's voice of the.
- 40:11Are you surprised this is only 5 1/2?
- 40:15Yes, yes, something. Stinks.
- 40:18Yes, I'm with you. That's your excellent point.
- 40:22Cappy kicks it off. Want more NFL misery with our
- 40:26regional teams? The Bears in the spotlight next?
- 40:28Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
