Transcript
- 0:00The world isn't going to celebrate our faith.
- 0:01In fact, the Scripture says the world prefers darkness.
- 0:04Jesus says time and time in the world you will have troubles,
- 0:08but ultimately living the Christian life, whatever you
- 0:11would say to life is, I can't imagine not doing this.
- 0:14This is Virtuous Leaders, the podcast for based Catholics who
- 0:17will speak truth, do good, or die trying.
- 0:20Here's the show. You are the president of
- 0:28Franciscan University in Steubenville.
- 0:30What is your what is your vision for the university?
- 0:34Yeah, ultimately the vision for the university is to form
- 0:38honestly, Saints for the Church of Saints.
- 0:41And it's funny, sometimes I think we just think of Saints
- 0:43and what they do for the Church. But I think Saints are good for
- 0:46culture. So our desire is to form men and
- 0:48women of integrity, of faith, of courage that are willing to have
- 0:53go ahead and engage the world, to be a part of it, to live in
- 0:55it, but obviously to be different to me as a faithful
- 0:59Catholic Christian. So our desire is to send out men
- 1:01and women that are going to say, Francis would use the word, the
- 1:04image of infiltrate the culture and bring about transformation
- 1:08in that. So we want it for disciples.
- 1:11We want the disciples ultimately to be Saints.
- 1:13Seems to me that's what a Catholic University is supposed
- 1:15to be doing. Absolutely.
- 1:17So what? What makes Franciscan unique or
- 1:20sensitive part? Yeah, well, I mean, I think
- 1:25there's a number of things. First off, as a Francisca
- 1:28University, we take our, you know, our our marshy warriors,
- 1:32if you will, our direction from Saint Francis Besizi, who
- 1:36radically loved the Lord, radically wanted to give his
- 1:39life to the Christ and to be faithful to him.
- 1:42You have a deep love for the Church at the university.
- 1:45We want we understand is Pope John Paul and I'll say John
- 1:49Paul. It's instead of Catholic
- 1:50institution and Catholic University should have basically
- 1:532 communities, a faith community and an academic community.
- 1:57And those two things need to come together.
- 2:00You would say that Catholic University lacking either one of
- 2:04those wouldn't be an authentic faithful Catholic University.
- 2:06So I'm not can share about what how other people go about this
- 2:11or how other institutions go about this.
- 2:13But what we see is it central, important to us is in all that
- 2:17we do, we place Christ in the middle of it.
- 2:19We are a Catholic Christian university.
- 2:22So whether it's a classroom, see athletic fields, whether it's a
- 2:26residence halls or whether it's the Chapel, a Christ is going to
- 2:29be in the center of what we do. And from that we are serious
- 2:34about the formation of the intellect as well as the heart.
- 2:36Again, John Paul would say that faith and reason not not be
- 2:39separated. You could say that they don't
- 2:41compete with each other, rather they elude.
- 2:44So we take seriously the formation of the intellect,
- 2:48obviously with our academic rigor, with the education,
- 2:52theology or business or philosophy or nursing, but then
- 2:57also the heart. Yeah.
- 2:58What is it? Profit a man if he aims the
- 3:00world, but he goes into the soul.
- 3:02So we take those two things very, very serious.
- 3:06So I've had the director of the Catholic Newman Guide on this
- 3:09show and Francis Ginn, he's one of those schools, university,
- 3:12that's on it among the schools that are on that guide.
- 3:17So that share the the faith component that you describe.
- 3:21How does Franciscan distinguish itself among those schools?
- 3:24Yeah, I think we're, I could be mistaken.
- 3:26I think we're the only Franciscan institute that is on
- 3:29in the Newman Guard. So there's a couple things and
- 3:32that's going to present. I think Franciscan education is
- 3:35always incarnation. You know that that there's
- 3:38there's a value in and of the education, but the value is also
- 3:41the formation that the individual experience is and
- 3:44then that way that they're going to carry that out.
- 3:47So I don't want to get too deep in the woods, but so Francis
- 3:50started three community and in my community is the third order
- 3:54regular. We run Francis universe.
- 3:57He believed that if the world was going to be changed, if the
- 4:00temporal order was going to be changed, it had to be
- 4:02infiltrated. So there's a real sense of that
- 4:05with our student body. Is I always referring to an
- 4:08individual who they actually lives in Manhattan and he's
- 4:12hired dozens of our students. One thing he says is that when
- 4:15our students graduate, they won. They're they're well formed,
- 4:18they're well trained. They know what they're doing.
- 4:20This is an area of business and finance, you said.
- 4:23But the second is they graduate with a mission.
- 4:25They understand that it's more than just a job, but there's a
- 4:28mission to the work that they're about.
- 4:31This would be a gimmick assistant with John Paul's
- 4:34invitation to what we call the University of personal vocation.
- 4:39I don't think any other institution has a personal
- 4:42location office but this is really a a central part of our
- 4:46formation of the students to be able to answer the question each
- 4:49student when they graduate. What must I do to inherit
- 4:51eternal life. Now part of those are the really
- 4:53practical things. Keep the commandments, be
- 4:56faithful to the Lord, be faithful to the church, but then
- 4:58discovering an individual's gifts, talents, things that
- 5:02they're passionate about and then help a form an educational
- 5:06that's ultimately going to satisfy really feeling that that
- 5:10desire of theirs to be able to do something great is is Pope
- 5:13anything. So I think the personal vocation
- 5:16is a part of it the incarnational aspect of a
- 5:18Francisco beauty department. We like to think joy is a part
- 5:21of it. I mean, one of the things that
- 5:22people come to Francisco University that they, there's
- 5:25just a joy on our campus that the students seem to be happy.
- 5:29They seem they seem to enjoy one another, enjoy our life
- 5:33together. So we like to think that that's
- 5:35a Franciscan joy. Yeah.
- 5:36I mean, I'll come about. Other Franciscan elements would
- 5:40be the deep connection to the human person is that Francis was
- 5:45very much about relationship. Once he has this encounter with
- 5:49the Lord, the next thing that happens in his life is he says
- 5:52the Lord send me brothers. So when we take it at Francis
- 5:55University, we really have 3 core values that we focus on at
- 5:59the university. The 1st is encounter this
- 6:02encounter with Christ that I've referenced already, but in that
- 6:05it only happens doesn't only happen Chapel, but happened the
- 6:08classroom all across the campus, but it's also within one another
- 6:13is is that as the scripture of ISIS, we are Christ for one
- 6:16another. So this is the first owner
- 6:18conversion and this is the key charism to the Francis or
- 6:21irregulators idea that conversion is a process of which
- 6:25we are always going through. But again, it's not just not
- 6:28just the spiritual formation, but it's also the conversion.
- 6:31It's also the intellectual. I think sometimes a student will
- 6:34walk in and they think they have an understanding on something,
- 6:36but something in their philosophy class is going to
- 6:38challenge that or in their theology class is going to
- 6:41challenge there. One of the things we're very
- 6:44proud of the strength can actually trust the professors,
- 6:47all the people and theology are taking also to Delhi.
- 6:50So they're going to teach faithfully to what they choose.
- 6:52So when something challenges them, they realize they can
- 6:55trust that. And that's something really
- 6:56important for for conversion and experience.
- 6:59And then last is what we're stating is, is community.
- 7:03And then we believe these 3 three things all live together
- 7:06on our academic community community conversion encounter
- 7:11in the context of the academic endeavor.
- 7:13It I, I actually, I think it's a great, very blessed movie now.
- 7:17Any particular projects you are working on now that you're
- 7:19excited about? Yeah.
- 7:21Well, we just finished our largest project actually in our
- 7:25history and that was the finishing completion of a a new
- 7:28academic building. It's also a Conference Center.
- 7:31It has two wings. And this building actually
- 7:34reflects what we're just talking about.
- 7:37It has one wing, which is an academic wing, which is our
- 7:40engineering department, our business and our nursing.
- 7:43And then second wing is really for conferences that we're
- 7:45allowed able to do year round symposiums, workshops, that kind
- 7:49of thing. Again, the hearts and the head
- 7:52are literally visible in this in this room, in this cool thing.
- 7:56Again, John Paul said faith and reason don't compete, they
- 8:00illuminate. So if you're coming walk into
- 8:01this building which has only been opened for not even a year,
- 8:06it's All Blacks. This idea that illuminates when
- 8:08these two worlds come together, it's illuminating if not each
- 8:12other. So that just got finished.
- 8:15We are about 80% of finished with the significant renovation
- 8:19of our Chapel, Christ the King. So this building that we just
- 8:22built is called Christ the Teacher.
- 8:23Christ is the center of the academic endeavor and the
- 8:26building, our Chapel is called Christ the King.
- 8:28It's also center of our worship. It's a major renovation.
- 8:32We simply didn't have enough space in our Chapel, so we had
- 8:35to do a major renovation. Previously it held about 375
- 8:40students. When we're finished with the
- 8:41renovation, it'll be about 300 for 590.
- 8:45Honestly, most often times when you come to Mass on campus
- 8:48previously their standing remote.
- 8:50So we just simply needed more space.
- 8:52So that's been a project that's been going on actually for about
- 8:56almost 12 months right now. It should, please Lord, it
- 8:59should be completed by the time the students come back in
- 9:02August. But that's a major project that
- 9:04we've been working on. Great.
- 9:06So prior to your presidency here at Franciscan, you had some
- 9:10experience in media. What?
- 9:13What was what were some of the proudest accomplishments you had
- 9:16there? That's great.
- 9:19Well, I guess my first endeavor into it, I I've been traveling
- 9:24and I was preaching full time cross section.
- 9:28My community allowed me to just travel wherever.
- 9:31So I went literally all over the world.
- 9:33But one of the things that I it was pretty evident was just
- 9:38looking out, being with people. These are people that are going
- 9:41to mass that were coming to mission, those types of things.
- 9:44There just seems to be something that was lacking in there.
- 9:48I'll do my way. I believe that's the Holy Spirit
- 9:50is is that we really need the Spirit of God to animate our
- 9:53life. Like Thomas Acquaintance would
- 9:55tell the story of of looking out at his.
- 9:58There were students that were seminarians.
- 10:00You would Taylor it seems like you weren't alive.
- 10:02They just kind of were going through the motions and you
- 10:05would say how is that possible? You've been communicated, you've
- 10:08been baptized. How is it that we don't live a
- 10:09dynamic. Well, ultimately our life needs
- 10:13to be animated for by the Holy Spirit.
- 10:15So I wrote a book at the times would have been about 10 years
- 10:18from now called Breath of God. You know, it's just really
- 10:21taking a look at what role the Holy Spirit plays in our life.
- 10:24Where will the play you know, a Catholic Christian.
- 10:28How does the Holy Spirit want to operate more in our life for you
- 10:31more freedom, more grace, more power, more annoying, more fruit
- 10:35or gifts all that, but also struggling at the time that the
- 10:40reality is a large percentage of people are going to read a book.
- 10:43So we had a a graduate from Fentis University choice working
- 10:47in media and his family in laws wanted to start kind of the
- 10:51medium out of media outreach. So the first, that was the first
- 10:55project we work on and we called it the wild goose.
- 10:58The wild goose was an ancient Gaelic charm for the Holy
- 11:01Spirit. All right, I really love that.
- 11:02I mean, it's not just this domesticated dove that we often
- 11:05see, but a wild goose and there's something about that.
- 11:09So if you go to Ireland, Scotland, use these images in
- 11:12many of the churches of a goose. Well, it's the history to that,
- 11:17you know, it's a 14 part series that we did on really
- 11:20discovering the Holy Spirit, discovering what it looked like
- 11:22to walk the Holy Spirit, to have a life with the Holy Spirit.
- 11:26We're taking a look at the Catechism.
- 11:27It says baptism, the gateway to a life and the Holy Spirit.
- 11:32The question I would ask is, are people living that life of the
- 11:35Holy Spirit? So and that was the first part
- 11:37to begin the next documentary on the life from Saint Francis.
- 11:43I would like to say Saint Francis is more than the bird
- 11:46bath Reality is that's what most people think.
- 11:48He's a bird bath. He loves animal this I just
- 11:53wanted to be able to present Saint Francis and I think all of
- 11:56his beauty and the glory that I think all right, stop.
- 12:02I think one of the greatest Saints that's ever lived.
- 12:05We're going to follow up to the wild goose focusing on a person
- 12:07in Jesus. We call him no way this idea
- 12:10considerable conversion refilm the whole thing in the holy back
- 12:14turned out really really beautiful again just taking the
- 12:17life and then the last project we just finished section we just
- 12:21released the class straight was called my father's father.
- 12:24You figure we do the Holy Spirit Jesus, which probably fairness
- 12:27to charity and it was very personal and it was really
- 12:33focusing on the fatherhood of God.
- 12:35But then also my own relationship with my father who
- 12:37had passed away about two years before and how it was that my
- 12:41father tried to disciple me so that I would come to love to
- 12:44help me father and you again. The big purpose was to try to
- 12:49reach an audience that that might not be reading might be
- 12:52living in this world of social media.
- 12:55You're just tremendously pleased and how it's been respond how
- 12:59it's very speak. Well, your father was a
- 13:01successful man because he passed on the faith, yes.
- 13:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's absolutely right.
- 13:07That's right. But that was really, it was very
- 13:10intentional about that and talk quite a bit that it's
- 13:12interesting if you are, if you Google, although I think it's
- 13:15changed recently, I've done it for a while, but if you Google
- 13:18this disciple your children, it's automatic change in the
- 13:25word, the idea of disciple your children.
- 13:27But I suggest that it's really the responsibility of of every
- 13:31mother and father to disciple their kids to try to raise a new
- 13:35mineral state. Yeah.
- 13:37And I think sometimes they. Already know?
- 13:44Sometimes people just aren't aware of that.
- 13:46Or, or aren't you as attentional about that as they might?
- 13:49Sure. So I'm always curious on this
- 13:52purchasers show to hear how people are executing their
- 13:56vision. So you as the as the executive
- 14:00of this organization, what, what is, how do you accomplish your
- 14:06goals? Yeah.
- 14:10The First off is, is to make sure that you've got men and
- 14:13women around you that have the same vision.
- 14:17Sorry. I think the leader is really,
- 14:19it's his or her responsibility to make sure people that are
- 14:23part of the institution share that thing.
- 14:26In many ways, that's just continuing to speak to that
- 14:29speak to what is our goals, what are our vision, what is our
- 14:31mission, what are desired outcomes and, and to really say
- 14:36that time and time again, I I jokingly say, but I think it's
- 14:39true. 90% of what I do as a priest or as administrator or is
- 14:44to remind people of things they already know.
- 14:47But this continual reminding people about who we are, what
- 14:50we're about because things a things become difficult, they
- 14:54become busy. Sometimes you get frustrated.
- 14:58So just to be able to continue to remind hiring for permission
- 15:03is it's the most important thing.
- 15:06It's interesting. I was just in the high school
- 15:08and they're trying to kind of create this high school very
- 15:12similar to Francis University, where faith is center, academic
- 15:16rigor is important. It's in center as well.
- 15:18But how do these things come together?
- 15:20And one thing is I think that that often times happens is
- 15:25administrators. And I want to nuance this
- 15:27because the young people are why we do what we do, but the young
- 15:31people aren't going to be impacted unless the tax the
- 15:33staff are impacted. That means hiring permissions or
- 15:37every fact the number at Francis University before they get
- 15:40offered a contract, they have to talk with me.
- 15:43Yes that I I need to make absolutely Sir, the person we're
- 15:47hiring. That's who we are just what
- 15:49we're trying to accomplish. Here's downs what makes this
- 15:51different you need and that they were totally on board with that.
- 15:55They don't come to my desk and tell that assured.
- 15:58I mean, the people that I have surrounded me, they understand
- 16:01their mission and they're going to make sure while we're on
- 16:05board. Yeah, I don't, I don't think
- 16:08I've had to block any guess about the time we get to meet
- 16:11there. We go there.
- 16:13But that's really important for me to make sure the people we
- 16:16have that are engaging, the young people fully are on board.
- 16:20And that's just we're things that learned over the years
- 16:23because the difference between somebody supporting what we're
- 16:26doing, it's something that's actually living what we're
- 16:28doing, people who are living because there's a way that you
- 16:32can support it, but it's not part of your bows, a part of
- 16:34your. I really want people what we're
- 16:38trying to do here, what we're trying to accomplish you, no
- 16:40matter with which we're doing it is part of their DNA.
- 16:42They just really see it as a not just understand it, not just
- 16:48support for the live view. Have you noticed any change in
- 16:52the quality of students in the last five years or so?
- 16:55Sure. Yeah, I think Covid's had a
- 16:58large impact on me. I mean, it's fine.
- 17:03I just read an article, I think in Chronicle of Heart
- 17:05Reservation. Harvard is having to do room
- 17:08needle math classes for their students.
- 17:11It's recording quote the best of the best as far as an academic
- 17:15and they're finding the same struggles that we are.
- 17:18Many of the students have struggled for for a large
- 17:20population of these these kids of two years that was outside of
- 17:25the norm of their education. Deep impact on them both
- 17:29Academia, I think also socially we stick to go for that.
- 17:34So sure, we'd absolutely see the difference in that.
- 17:38Well, just given the time of year, I'm wondering if you have
- 17:39any comments on the conclave? No, that's why I'm familiar with
- 17:48Hallow. You'll be doing a thing with
- 17:50Hallowed next week. I shouldn't speak, sorry.
- 17:53Yeah, agree. Praying for the praying for the
- 17:57conflict and the what can we actually do?
- 17:58I joke that I've not received a single phone call asking my
- 18:01opinion on the conflict or my opinion on who should be the
- 18:04next. The I can really do is pray.
- 18:07I mean, in many ways, especially for young people.
- 18:11The last time the Pope was elected, there were that were
- 18:15maybe 9 or 10 years old, which is interesting to think about
- 18:18right now. So as young adults, it's really
- 18:20their first experience. So on campus, it's been kind of
- 18:23an exciting time. You know, you know, there's the
- 18:26morning of the loss of the Pope, but now there's like what now
- 18:29what what happens till first now just being worthy.
- 18:33They do like it's kind of a fun kind of fun to be on campus.
- 18:36Really it's the students, me graduating 5 days.
- 18:40So we don't know whether or not we'll have a before I believe or
- 18:42not, but it's been fun. Let's be a little bit, just be a
- 18:46part of that with the students, just for them.
- 18:48It's very store. They go back all the way to Paul
- 18:51the 6th, right? Yeah.
- 18:54These kids, most of them, most of the students don't know John
- 18:56Paul. John Paul was had passed away
- 18:59before they were born. It's really kind of remarkable
- 19:01to keep that. Well may I be the first one to
- 19:04be honored by asking you what is your opinion of of the upcoming
- 19:08PO? Well, you said you said that to
- 19:12No one has asked your opinion of.
- 19:15Not, not the conflict about who I think's going to be elected.
- 19:18Yeah, I don't, Yeah. I mean, I there, there, there's
- 19:23some kind of speculation. There are some people that I
- 19:25really appreciate. I I'm going to leave that to the
- 19:30Lord and leave that to the to the Cardinals to figure it out.
- 19:33It's probably wise. I guess, but it will threaten
- 19:37me. One of the things that we do at
- 19:38the university that's important is that or see our our fafty and
- 19:43staff, I mean the theology and the all the executive team and
- 19:46all the Friars and people both do past of care making off the
- 19:50fidelity to the Holy Father. So whether that Holy Father be
- 19:54Francis Benedict or John Paul, that we're going to be faithful
- 19:57to the church and faithful to the Holy Father and recognize
- 20:00that. And and that's one of the things
- 20:03we can't just pick and choose. It's important for us as a
- 20:06Catholic to be faithful to that, that we chosen to be.
- 20:09That will continue to. Yeah, well, it's essential to
- 20:13being Catholic, I think. Yeah.
- 20:15Exactly. Any last thoughts for a solid
- 20:17Dave? On on that topic.
- 20:20No, or or anything, yeah. No, I mean it just it's it's
- 20:24exciting to being a part of our windows and I'm seeing students
- 20:29walk up to class and they've got notebooks in the book you them
- 20:31notes for the last time. I really love being a part of
- 20:37Catholic higher education. I love being a part of the, you
- 20:40know, both lives. Their world opened up as they
- 20:43studied as their form. You know, I love the fact
- 20:46they're here for four years to really be able to engage a world
- 20:50that really, honestly, really desperately needs what our young
- 20:53people have to offer. I just said Mass this afternoon
- 20:57in this history was the beginning of poverty.
- 21:00Steven and everybody turning against Steven and cats of the
