- 1:55Speaker 1: Throughout the month.
- 1:55Speaker 2: As I mentioned, I'll be collaborating with a bunch of
- 1:58Speaker 2: fun experts to talk about everything injury to what you
- 2:00Speaker 2: should be eating, and mindset and more. And today I'm
- 2:04Speaker 2: homing in a little bit on that mindset thing. I'm
- 2:07Speaker 2: going to talk about today what keeps me going when
- 2:09Speaker 2: I feel like I just don't want to go any
- 2:12Speaker 2: farther and trust me, it happens a lot.
- 2:14Speaker 1: You know. It's not like every day I wake up,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I tie my shoes, I get out there, and things
- 2:19Speaker 1: go absolutely seamlessly. In fact, most days, within the first
- 2:24Speaker 1: five minutes I think about turning home. In the next
- 2:27Speaker 1: ten minutes, I'm still thinking about going home.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And finally, maybe somewhere around minute twenty six, I decide, Okay,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you're probably more.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Than halfway there now, so you might as well just
- 2:39Speaker 1: stick it out. If this sounds like something you can
- 2:42Speaker 1: totally relate to, then stay tuned and keep listening on
- 2:45Speaker 1: this week, next.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Week, the week after that, the week after that. You
- 2:48Speaker 2: guys have been asking me for this stuff, and I'm
- 2:51Speaker 2: just here trying to make everyone as happy as a
- 2:53Speaker 2: hurdle podcaster. Can you know the drill at Emily Abadi
- 2:57Speaker 2: at Hurdle Podcast. If you need me or have anything
- 2:59Speaker 2: specific you want to hear about when it comes to
- 3:02Speaker 2: running or anything else, feel free to email me. It's
- 3:05Speaker 2: Emily at hurdle dot us. And with that, let's get
- 3:10Speaker 2: to hurdling. Fun fact, I coached spin for a while
- 3:23Speaker 2: here in New York at a place called Swerve.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I absolutely loved it.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I remember coaching my last class and crying during one
- 3:31Speaker 2: of those songs where I dimmed.
- 3:32Speaker 1: The lights in the studio to really bring up the mood.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I walked up the stairs and a good friend of
- 3:37Speaker 2: mine he walked up behind me and said, I wish
- 3:39Speaker 2: I could just listen to the words of motivation that
- 3:41Speaker 2: you were giving me in that classroom every single day
- 3:44Speaker 2: when I'm walking to the office.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's been something that stuck with me. Everyone everywhere they
- 3:51Speaker 1: have a unique perspective to share and the opportunity to
- 3:54Speaker 1: impact others. It's definitely scary and super vulnerable, and it's
- 3:58Speaker 1: the experience that I'm here doing on the regular here
- 4:01Speaker 1: on hurdle. But what I've come to learn is that
- 4:03Speaker 1: this is such an unbelievable chance for me to share
- 4:06Speaker 1: with you what works for me. Now, I'm not telling you.
- 4:09Speaker 2: That the mantras or the strategies or the little things
- 4:11Speaker 2: I tell myself when the goaling gets tough will one
- 4:14Speaker 2: hundred percent help you to get over the hurdles that
- 4:16Speaker 2: you're facing. But maybe it will, and then maybe, hey,
- 4:21Speaker 2: it's worth it, so let's talk about it.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You're out there for a bad run. For me, I
- 4:27Speaker 1: had a really bad one three weeks ago. It was
- 4:30Speaker 1: in the height of summer, the height of my marathon training.
- 4:34Speaker 1: It as hot as hell, even worse humanity, and I
- 4:37Speaker 1: felt like I just wasn't good at running anymore. You've
- 4:40Speaker 1: been there, right, And that's hard, right, especially when you
- 4:44Speaker 1: identify as a runner. It's hard to feel like you're
- 4:47Speaker 1: not good at your sport. It's hard to feel unsure.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It's the same way you feel when you're on the
- 4:53Speaker 1: injured list, when.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You can't run every day, And because you associate yourself
- 4:58Speaker 2: as a runner, it makes to question what you're even
- 5:01Speaker 2: doing anyway, that moment that you feel like everything is awful,
- 5:06Speaker 2: that moment where you don't want to be out there anymore,
- 5:08Speaker 2: there are things that you can do to keep going. Granted,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you're still going to have junkie runs, it's part of
- 5:15Speaker 2: the process. But trust me, maybe these few strategies will
- 5:19Speaker 2: make the less sucky one suck a little bit less.
- 5:23Speaker 2: The first thing I do every single time, remember why
- 5:26Speaker 2: I started. For me, running has never been just super easy.
- 5:31Speaker 2: It really feels that way today. But there was a
- 5:34Speaker 2: time when I could barely run a half a mile, nevertheless,
- 5:38Speaker 2: a five k and I couldn't even have dreamed of
- 5:40Speaker 2: signing up for a marathon. When I think about why
- 5:43Speaker 2: I started these days, I think about the girl who
- 5:46Speaker 2: had hopes to become a better version of herself, to
- 5:49Speaker 2: lose some weight, and just to be a healthier, happier human.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I remember those runs back then. They were really awful
- 5:58Speaker 2: two thousand and seven, uncomfortable in my own body. I
- 6:01Speaker 2: remember that it felt like it was impossible to move
- 6:04Speaker 2: my weight. I felt like the pounds would never come off,
- 6:08Speaker 2: and I wondered why I was even trying in the
- 6:09Speaker 2: first place. But then I think about now. I think
- 6:13Speaker 2: about how many times I've stuck with running, how many
- 6:16Speaker 2: times I've chosen running instead of so many other negative options.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think about the times.
- 6:23Speaker 2: That I leaned into running to get through hard things
- 6:25Speaker 2: like breakups and getting ghosted and not getting the job,
- 6:29Speaker 2: or an apartment hunt gone completely wrong. I remember the
- 6:33Speaker 2: girl then versus this girl now, and I choose this
- 6:38Speaker 2: woman every single time. The next thing I do when
- 6:43Speaker 2: it gets hard, I break the run up into small,
- 6:47Speaker 2: little doables. Now, this is something that can work in
- 6:50Speaker 2: every single aspect of your life. It goes back to
- 6:53Speaker 2: the thing I talk about very often here, setting smart
- 6:56Speaker 2: goals specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound. When you
- 7:02Speaker 2: set smart goals, there are these things that you've got
- 7:05Speaker 2: to accomplish, these things that are small, incremental progress points
- 7:09Speaker 2: that get you to the bigger picture, that get you
- 7:12Speaker 2: to where you want to be. When I'm going out
- 7:14Speaker 2: for a run that's ten, twelve, maybe more miles, it
- 7:18Speaker 2: can feel overwhelming. Heck, I go out on four mile
- 7:21Speaker 2: runs that feel absolutely impossible. In those situations, I think
- 7:25Speaker 2: about the smaller things. I think about segmenting it to
- 7:29Speaker 2: feel attainable. So say, if it's just a four mile run, right,
- 7:34Speaker 2: you're out there, you've been at it for maybe three minutes.
- 7:38Speaker 2: In those first three minutes, maybe the run feels like everest.
- 7:42Speaker 2: And maybe in the fourth minute that's when I tell myself, okay,
- 7:46Speaker 2: at one mile, you put on this hype up song.
- 7:49Speaker 2: At two miles, well that means that after when you're done,
- 7:53Speaker 2: you get to splurge for the espresso in your cabinet.
- 7:56Speaker 1: At three miles, you're almost in the home stretch. And
- 7:59Speaker 1: when you cross what's that four mile threshold, Well, trust me,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I bet you won't be thinking about how you felt
- 8:05Speaker 1: at the three minute mark. Anymore. Little doables, little goals.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They make all of the difference, and it's so important
- 8:14Speaker 1: to recognize the small wins along the way. It's so
- 8:17Speaker 1: important to be proud of yourself for not just accomplishing
- 8:21Speaker 1: the big goal, but for staying true to yourself during
- 8:24Speaker 1: the journey. The next thing I do when things get tough,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I go to mantras. There's so much research about the
- 8:32Speaker 1: power of mantras, and I can't say it enough to
- 8:34Speaker 1: you guys. They are literally the thing that gets me
- 8:36Speaker 1: through when things feel really, really hard. After thinking about
- 8:41Speaker 1: why I started, after breaking it into small, little doables,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I did a whole Hurdle Moment episode about mantras, So
- 8:48Speaker 1: definitely go back. I believe it's called these few words
- 8:51Speaker 1: can change your life. My go to mantras are you
- 8:54Speaker 1: can and you didn't come this far to only come
- 8:57Speaker 1: this far. I literally repeat it to myself every single
- 9:01Speaker 1: time I feel like I'm just hitting the wall over
- 9:04Speaker 1: and over. You can, you can? You can? You can
- 9:08Speaker 1: over and over during some of the hardest miles. It's
- 9:12Speaker 1: just a reminder that I am literally capable of whatever
- 9:16Speaker 1: I set my mind to. So do me a favor
- 9:19Speaker 1: right now, wherever you are, maybe not if you're running,
- 9:25Speaker 1: but close your eyes. And if you can't close your eyes,
- 9:27Speaker 1: then maybe just soften your gaze and look down, just
- 9:31Speaker 1: for a second. I want you to feel your feet
- 9:34Speaker 1: on the ground, and if you can, put your hand
- 9:37Speaker 1: on your chest so that you can feel your heart beating.
- 9:41Speaker 1: That heartbeat. It's a reminder that you're alive. It's a
- 9:45Speaker 1: reminder that you have the opportunity to use the fire
- 9:49Speaker 1: inside of you to go after whatever it is that
- 9:51Speaker 1: you want. Remember, when the run gets tough, when life
- 9:57Speaker 1: gets tough, you have the power to push through anything
- 10:02Speaker 1: at any time, in any way. Go ahead, open your eyes,
- 10:10Speaker 1: look around you, and understand that the hard stuff, this
- 10:14Speaker 1: effort right now, this everest feeling, it won't last forever.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And trust me when I tell you that the hard
- 10:23Speaker 1: stuff happens to us each and every day to teach
- 10:27Speaker 1: us how to get through it, to teach us how
- 10:29Speaker 1: to be tough enough to handle it moving forward. The
- 10:33Speaker 1: hard stuff makes us better. The good runs, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: they're great too. All of it makes us who we are.
- 10:41Speaker 1: All of it reminds us that we are capable. So
- 10:46Speaker 1: back to mantras. Trust me, if you don't have one.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It's time to figure out what speaks to you. You
- 10:53Speaker 1: can do a Google search. It's easy. Googling mantras isn't cheating.
- 10:58Speaker 1: But when you find one, find one that speaks to you.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Find one that makes you feel empowered, makes you feel
- 11:05Speaker 1: like you can conquer because you can and understand it's
- 11:09Speaker 1: there for you to fall back on when things just
- 11:12Speaker 1: don't feel easy. And that's it. Those are my three strategies,
- 11:17Speaker 1: my three mental tricks to get through the hard stuff.
- 11:22Speaker 1: To keep on pushing when you want to quit. Understand this,
- 11:26Speaker 1: especially if you're running a fall marathon. Now is the
- 11:28Speaker 1: time when things feel really tough. I get it. And
- 11:32Speaker 1: if you're wondering, if it's just you, trust me, it's not.
- 11:35Speaker 2: You're not alone, and you are going to get through
- 11:38Speaker 2: this and you're going to be great.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Keep your head up hurdlers.
- 11:43Speaker 2: As always at Emily Body at Hurdle Podcast Another hurdle Conquered.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Catch you guys later,
