- 0:03(Transcribed by TurboScribe. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Before we get started today, just a few
- 0:29housekeeping things.
- 0:31First an apology for those of you who
- 0:33actually listen to new episodes each week.
- 0:35You probably noticed that we didn't have an
- 0:38episode last week, and I forgot to mention
- 0:40in advance that we would be taking a
- 0:42one-week break between the series.
- 0:44We are starting a new series today, which
- 0:46I'll talk about in just a minute.
- 0:47But before we get to that, you may
- 0:50remember that at the beginning of each episode
- 0:52there's this little reminder, hey, Finding God at
- 0:55Work isn't just a podcast, it's also an
- 0:56online course.
- 0:57That course is now available for free.
- 1:00So for a while we were charging for
- 1:02it, but we realized we might get better
- 1:04traction if we made it available for free.
- 1:06And that's been true, more people have been
- 1:08signing up now that it's free, which is
- 1:10great.
- 1:11So it is a two and a half
- 1:13hours worth of video content, but spread across
- 1:1650 micro-lessons.
- 1:18So it's a lot of the same kind
- 1:19of things we talk about here on the
- 1:21podcast related to how do we meet God
- 1:24in our workplace, what is God doing through
- 1:26our work, what does it mean for him
- 1:28to have a call on our lives, how
- 1:30do we share our faith in the workplace
- 1:32in a winsome and fruitful way, what's God's
- 1:35vision of the future of work.
- 1:37So if you're interested in maybe engaging with
- 1:40these ideas through a video course, you can
- 1:43go to findinggodatwork.org and sign up for
- 1:47the course for free.
- 1:48And it's self-paced, you can go through
- 1:49those 50 micro-lessons whenever you want, there's
- 1:52kind of six main chapters.
- 1:54So yeah, if you have any questions, we'd
- 1:57love to talk with you about any of
- 1:58that.
- 1:59On a similar note, if you are looking
- 2:01for a face-to-face opportunity, something new
- 2:04is coming up in 2027.
- 2:06So this is local, it's in the city
- 2:08of Aurora, and we're calling it Faith at
- 2:11Work Aurora, a new monthly gathering.
- 2:13So we're going to launch it on the
- 2:15second Tuesday of January, January 12th, at the
- 2:19Aurora Public Library.
- 2:21And the idea is, it's nothing too fancy,
- 2:23we're going to do four things.
- 2:24We're going to gather, eat, talk, and pray.
- 2:27So we're going to gather together face-to
- 2:29-face so that you have a chance to
- 2:30look at other human beings in the eyes
- 2:32and be in a real physical space with
- 2:34real food and get to know each other.
- 2:38And then we're going to talk about Faith
- 2:40at Work, but not just in the abstract,
- 2:42with a focus on loving the city of
- 2:45Aurora, Illinois.
- 2:46I live in Aurora, technically I'm in an
- 2:48unincorporated Aurora, but I'm just over the city
- 2:50line.
- 2:51And I worship in Aurora, Aurora's home base
- 2:54for Mission Central as a ministry.
- 2:56And so if you live in or near
- 2:58Aurora, and you're trying to think, how do
- 3:00I live this stuff out?
- 3:01Loving my neighbor through my work, sharing my
- 3:03faith in my relationships, right here.
- 3:07How do I live this stuff out in
- 3:08Aurora?
- 3:09That's what we're going to be talking about
- 3:10and praying about together at this monthly gathering.
- 3:13So we'll have a little bit of Faith
- 3:15at Work discipleship content.
- 3:16Sometimes I'll share, sometimes we'll watch a video,
- 3:18sometimes we'll have a guest speaker.
- 3:19But then we'll also have a chance to
- 3:21hear from leaders in the city of Aurora,
- 3:25leaders of businesses, leaders of nonprofits or ministries,
- 3:28and pastors of churches as well, sharing their
- 3:31heart for Aurora.
- 3:33And then each time we'll spend some time
- 3:34praying for God's kingdom to come and God's
- 3:37will to be done in Aurora, as it
- 3:39is in heaven.
- 3:40So if that's interesting to you, there'll be
- 3:42more information about that coming out through Mission
- 3:44Central's communication channels in the coming months.
- 3:47But just wanted to give a heads up
- 3:48about it because I'm excited about it and
- 3:50would love for some podcast listeners, if you're
- 3:53local, and it would make sense for you
- 3:54to come and be there.
- 3:56So 6.30pm, Aurora Public Library, the main
- 3:58downtown branch on Tuesday, January 12th will be
- 4:02the first of the monthly gatherings.
- 4:04And it's free.
- 4:05I think we'll make an option where people
- 4:06can chip in for the pizza dinner or
- 4:08what have you, but that'll be optional.
- 4:10So with that, we are starting a new
- 4:13series today, A Guide on the Side, how
- 4:18to have joyful spiritual conversations at work.
- 4:22So I don't know if you've ever gone
- 4:24birdwatching, if you have a friend who's a
- 4:27birder, I have a friend, Deacon Margie, she's
- 4:30in the church where I grew up, she
- 4:32was my children's pastor when I was a
- 4:33kid, and she and her family are really
- 4:36adept birders.
- 4:37So they're the kind of folks where they'll
- 4:38be looking through the binoculars and they'll see
- 4:40something and they'll say like, oh, that's a
- 4:42tanager or whatever, you know, like these obscure
- 4:44bird names that most people wouldn't know.
- 4:46And it's because they've kind of trained themselves
- 4:48to be attentive to where the birds are,
- 4:51that they know what time of year different
- 4:53birds come in, they know what birds to
- 4:55expect and what birds probably won't show up
- 4:57here in the Midwest.
- 4:59Katie and I are amateurs, right?
- 5:01We've never really gone birding, but we like
- 5:04to go on walks in a public park
- 5:06here in Aurora.
- 5:07And in the public park, there are often
- 5:09goldfinches.
- 5:10And so when we're walking, it's not unusual
- 5:12for Katie to stop and say, oh, look,
- 5:15oh, look, and I'll look and there's a
- 5:16goldfinch fluttering around in the trees, right?
- 5:18Or maybe sometimes I'm the first one to
- 5:19see it and I'll say, oh, look, look.
- 5:21And, you know, sometimes it flies away and
- 5:23the other person doesn't get a chance to
- 5:24see what you saw, but you're hoping that
- 5:27the bird stays still enough that the other
- 5:29person can see it, too.
- 5:31I think this is an image for evangelism.
- 5:36When we think about evangelism, proclaiming the good
- 5:39news of Jesus Christ, of his death and
- 5:42resurrection, of his kingdom, we often think about
- 5:46what we are saying, and that can put
- 5:48a lot of pressure on us.
- 5:49But I think that it's really important that
- 5:52we realize we, as evangelists, are not a
- 5:57sage on the stage.
- 5:58We are a guide on the side.
- 6:01We're coming up next to somebody else, some
- 6:03other human being like us, created in the
- 6:06image of God, filled with immense capacity for
- 6:09glory in relationship with God.
- 6:10And we're saying, look, look at that.
- 6:13Isn't that great?
- 6:14We're pointing to the reality of God in
- 6:16Jesus Christ and hoping that they can catch
- 6:19a glance.
- 6:20That's really important for a couple of reasons.
- 6:22One is it takes the pressure off of
- 6:24us, right?
- 6:25It's not about how perfect our words are,
- 6:28right?
- 6:29When I point out a goldfinch to Katie,
- 6:31sometimes all I say is, oh, look, I
- 6:33don't have some eloquent, amazing thing to say.
- 6:35It's just, oh, look, right?
- 6:37The point is, when somebody looks, what they
- 6:40see.
- 6:41The point is Jesus.
- 6:42The point is the glory of God made
- 6:44manifest in Jesus Christ.
- 6:46That's what matters.
- 6:47And so the pressure isn't on us and
- 6:49how amazing our words are.
- 6:51The point is, we're coming alongside and helping
- 6:53people catch a glimpse of the beauty of
- 6:55God that's really there in the face of
- 6:58Jesus Christ.
- 6:59So the pressure's off.
- 7:00That's one reason it's important.
- 7:01And the second reason it's important is that
- 7:04we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously.
- 7:07It's not just that the pressure's off.
- 7:09It's also that it's not really about us
- 7:11to begin with.
- 7:14We are not experts, right?
- 7:17My favorite teacher of the spiritual life outside
- 7:20of the Bible, you all know, is Dallas
- 7:21Willard, and he was once introduced as a
- 7:24spiritual formation expert, and he talked about what
- 7:27it was like to be introduced as a
- 7:29spiritual formation expert.
- 7:30And he said, I just wanted to disappear
- 7:32and fall through the floor, right?
- 7:33Because there are no spiritual formation experts.
- 7:37All of us are learners.
- 7:39All of us are students.
- 7:40Jesus is the only true teacher.
- 7:43Jesus is the only spiritual formation expert.
- 7:45Jesus is the only gospel expert.
- 7:47The rest of us are always beginning.
- 7:50We're always beginning anew.
- 7:51And so that means that we're in a
- 7:53good place to help other beginners.
- 7:55We're in a good place to help other
- 7:57people who like us are coming to see
- 7:59the goodness of Jesus.
- 8:02So in this series, we're going to talk
- 8:06about how to have joyful spiritual conversations, joyful
- 8:10spiritual conversations.
- 8:11And I use that word joy intentionally.
- 8:14Jesus talked about joy and Jesus lived joy.
- 8:17And so it's the joy of Jesus that
- 8:20we are able to tap into when we
- 8:22have spiritual conversations with others.
- 8:24And I want to go to the Bible
- 8:26first and look at an example of this
- 8:30joy.
- 8:30Now the word joy isn't used in this
- 8:32passage, but I think it's there as you
- 8:34kind of read between the lines and then
- 8:36just provide an outline of what we're going
- 8:39to cover in this series.
- 8:40So this is from John chapter one, right?
- 8:44Starting in verse 35, it's talking about John
- 8:47the Baptist.
- 8:48The next day, John was there again with
- 8:50two of his disciples.
- 8:52When he saw Jesus passing by, he said,
- 8:54look, the Lamb of God.
- 8:56When the two disciples heard him say this,
- 8:58they followed Jesus.
- 9:00Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked,
- 9:02what do you want?
- 9:04They said, rabbi, which means teacher, where are
- 9:08you staying?
- 9:10Come, he replied, and you will see.
- 9:13So they went and saw where he was
- 9:15staying and they spent that day with him.
- 9:17It was about four in the afternoon.
- 9:20Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the
- 9:22two who had heard what John had said
- 9:24and who had followed Jesus.
- 9:26The first thing Andrew did was to find
- 9:28his brother Simon and tell him, we have
- 9:30found the Messiah, that is the Christ, and
- 9:33he brought him to Jesus.
- 9:36Jesus looked at him and said, you are
- 9:38Simon, son of John, you will be called
- 9:40Cephas, which when translated is Peter.
- 9:44The next day, Jesus decided to leave for
- 9:46Galilee, finding Philip, he said to him, follow
- 9:48me, Philip, like Andrew and Peter was from
- 9:51the town of Bethsaida.
- 9:52Philip found Nathanael and told him, we have
- 9:55found the one Moses wrote about in the
- 9:56law and about whom the prophets also wrote,
- 9:59Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph, and
- 10:03the story goes on from there.
- 10:05Okay.
- 10:06Now the word joy isn't used, but, but
- 10:08do you have that sense of like the
- 10:09breathlessness of these early disciples?
- 10:12Right?
- 10:12The first thing Andrew did was to find
- 10:14his brother, Simon, and tell him we have
- 10:16found the Messiah.
- 10:17Is that not a joyful announcement?
- 10:19Similarly, right?
- 10:20Philip, after his encounter with Jesus, he goes
- 10:23and he finds Nathanael and tells him we
- 10:25have found the one that Moses wrote about
- 10:27in the law and about whom the prophets
- 10:28also wrote, Jesus of Nazareth.
- 10:30You can feel this sense of excitement of
- 10:32joy.
- 10:33It's like they've become contagious with good news
- 10:35already because of the goodness of Jesus.
- 10:38All they needed was, was one afternoon with
- 10:41him, right?
- 10:41Uh, the disciples of John who go over,
- 10:43including Andrew, right?
- 10:45They're spending an afternoon with Jesus starting around
- 10:484 PM and that's enough to persuade them.
- 10:51Oh my goodness.
- 10:51He's the one, he's the one.
- 10:53You imagine what that afternoon was like for
- 10:55them, but you also see their response, right?
- 10:58Is their response to go and tell other
- 11:01people a bunch of things about Jesus?
- 11:03Well, well, eventually they'll do things like that,
- 11:05like in the book of acts, et cetera,
- 11:07but right now, what is their response, right?
- 11:10It's just to go and get people and
- 11:12to see if those people can, can get
- 11:13a glimpse of Jesus for themselves, right?
- 11:15The first thing Andrew did was to find
- 11:20his brother Simon, right?
- 11:21And he brought him to Jesus, bringing people
- 11:25to Jesus.
- 11:26Did Andrew have some sort of amazing, uh,
- 11:30insight into Peter's character to share?
- 11:32Not really.
- 11:34Did Jesus have some amazing insight into Peter's
- 11:36character to share?
- 11:37Yes.
- 11:37Jesus had this prophetic word that Simon would
- 11:40be Peter, that he would be the rock,
- 11:41right?
- 11:42And it would unfold over time what that
- 11:43meant.
- 11:44But all that Andrew did was say, Peter,
- 11:47you got to come to Jesus.
- 11:48That's what we're doing in evangelism.
- 11:51We are encountering Jesus for ourselves.
- 11:54We're encountering the good news for ourselves.
- 11:56We're encountering the presence of Jesus and in
- 11:59that there's joy.
- 12:00And as we kind of soak up the
- 12:01radiance of Jesus's presence, we're then looking for
- 12:04opportunities where somebody else might be willing to
- 12:06come and catch some of those rays of
- 12:08his goodness too.
- 12:09Might be willing to come and see what
- 12:12Jesus is like.
- 12:14We're just bringing people to Jesus.
- 12:16We are guides on the side, not sages
- 12:19on a stage.
- 12:21So, uh, one of the things that I
- 12:23want to say as we step into this
- 12:24series is that you can do it.
- 12:27Uh, if there's kind of one idea about
- 12:30evangelism that I want you to take away
- 12:31from this, it's that you can do it.
- 12:33You can be a fruitful evangelist.
- 12:36You can be someone who proclaims the good
- 12:38news about Jesus in winsome and beautiful ways
- 12:42to the people around you who are open
- 12:43to it.
- 12:44And, and again, that's not because you're going
- 12:48to be some sort of incredible expert.
- 12:50You don't have to be an expert to
- 12:53be a fruitful evangelist.
- 12:54You just have to believe that Jesus will
- 12:57be there.
- 12:58When you're a guide on the side, you
- 13:00will meet Jesus with your friends who are
- 13:03spiritually curious.
- 13:04Jesus will meet with you together and they'll
- 13:07discover him for themselves through that encounter.
- 13:10Uh, there's a book by an author.
- 13:13One of the two authors I actually personally
- 13:14know, Jerry Root and Stan Guthrie.
- 13:17Um, he was a professor at Wheaton.
- 13:18I actually never had any classes with him.
- 13:20I had a class with his wife, Claudia,
- 13:21about, um, teaching English to speakers of other
- 13:24languages.
- 13:24Um, but I did have a chance to
- 13:26meet him at various points and he's, uh,
- 13:28dedicated his life to the study and practice
- 13:30of evangelism.
- 13:31And I just really appreciated the way that,
- 13:33that Jerry and Stan Guthrie talk about this
- 13:36in terms of the presence of Christ and
- 13:39what we can expect.
- 13:40So they, they point to a different passage,
- 13:42Matthew 14, where Jesus walks on the water,
- 13:44as you may recall.
- 13:46Let me read from their book.
- 13:48This is the sacrament of evangelism.
- 13:51The sacramental presence of Christ is manifest in
- 13:54each act of obedience.
- 13:57That is because it is by his grace
- 13:59alone that we can obey in the first
- 14:00place.
- 14:01Thus, if we are obeying, we can be
- 14:03sure God is already working as Dietrich Bonhoeffer
- 14:06said, only he who believes is obedient and
- 14:09only he who is obedient believes.
- 14:11A case in point is Peter's brief walk
- 14:13on the water while Peter ultimately failed because
- 14:16he took his eyes off Jesus.
- 14:18We must not forget that he was the
- 14:20only one to get out of the boat.
- 14:22When the apostle saw Christ coming toward them,
- 14:24Peter cried out, Lord, if it's you tell
- 14:27me to come to you on the water,
- 14:29Jesus simply said, come.
- 14:32In the very act of putting our foot
- 14:34over the side of the boat, we sense
- 14:36that Christ is present, fear gives away to
- 14:39peace, then excitement as we see him use
- 14:42our feeble faltering gifts for his glory.
- 14:44In this kind of obedience, we lose nothing
- 14:47and gain everything.
- 14:48We can be confident that the Lord is
- 14:50at work, sustaining us and leading the way
- 14:52in every evangelistic encounter, no matter the hardships.
- 14:57So that's my prayer for you as we
- 14:59head into this series, that whatever your work
- 15:01situation is, whether you're working a full-time
- 15:04job, a part-time job, doing unpaid work
- 15:05at home, taking care of kids or other
- 15:07family members, maybe you're retired and you're working
- 15:09as a volunteer in various capacities.
- 15:11Whatever your work situation is, that you would
- 15:15see Jesus, that you would see where Jesus
- 15:17is already at work in the people around
- 15:20you, in your coworkers, in your family relationships,
- 15:23among your friends, and that you would hear
- 15:26Jesus saying to you, come, come to where
- 15:28I'm already walking on the water.
- 15:31Come step out in faith and you'll meet
- 15:32me here.
- 15:33And you and I will meet these people
- 15:35who are spiritually curious together.
- 15:38And when those people meet Jesus, Jesus is
- 15:40the one who will carry the day.
- 15:42Jesus is the one who is the good
- 15:44news who can transform their lives.
- 15:48Come Lord Jesus, come.
- 15:50We do ask that you would give us
- 15:51that faith, faith like Andrew to say, come
- 15:55and see, come and see this person that
- 15:56we found, a faith like Philip to say,
- 15:59we found the one that Moses talked about,
- 16:02faith like Peter to step out of the
- 16:05boat.
- 16:06I pray that you would give us attentive
- 16:08hearts and that we would attend to you
- 16:12and to the people around us and to
- 16:14your movement in our own souls as we
- 16:16consider how to share your good news as
- 16:18we go through this series, Jesus, do your
- 16:21work in us as we do our work
- 16:22with you.
